#HA Green - unreachable and unresponsive
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Are you using Alexa Media Player?
No, I double checked that a few days ago 😄
There is evidence we may have had some sort of very brief power glitch around the time it stopped working
as in restarts of some devices
which tends to make me think I may have nothing to lose by just powering it off and restarting
damage may be already done
Cutting the power might cause a corruption of the filesystem.
Yes but I was wondering if maybe it was already damaged if I am right about the power interruption 10 hours ago
You should try to power it down gracefully by pressing the power button for 6 seconds.
The powerdown process might need a bit time.
If it doesn't want to turn off at all, press that button for more than 12 seconds to force it off.
ok I'll go and try the 6 seconds press now
If you connect the green to a monitor and keyboard, you can look for error messages on startup.
If it shows IO errors there, the Green needs a full re-install of HAOS.
I don't really have the right equipment handy for that, lets see if it's ok after the restart
how long should I give it to see if it shuts down?
Going by the green light I think it was too busy to listen to its button :/
anyway I'll see
I had to do the 12 seconds. It's rebooting and the yellow light is in the heartbeat pattern
It's back up, and things are looking like they should. Many thanks for your help, I'd forgotten about the shutdown button to be honest
I would suggest to create a backup and download it. Just to be prepared, if it crashes again and a re-install is necessary.
Generally a good idea to have a not too old downloaded backup at hand.
Oddly, I'd just taken a full backup and uploaded it to Google Drive just hours before the situation
The backups on the Green itself might get lost, if the filesystem gets corrupted.
So I would have had something to restore from
Do you have power outages often?
Not at all, this was very unusual
But I will be looking into a clean-power UPS now. If I'd lost all that work it would have taken days to remake it
A UPS is a good idea. If you get one, which is compatible with NUT (Network UPS Tools), it can gracefully power down the Green, if it runs out of power.
I am using an Eaton Ellipse ECO 650 with USB port.
Talking of power fluctuations, we were thinking of getting solar energy, and presumably at some point the battery storage depletes and you switch to the grid power... I wonder if that causes interruptions enough to disturb computers etc
I am no electrician and don't know the characteristics of those switches. But a UPS should protect against short interruptions.
My hue system had no problems last night, but that's a dumbish hub and the actual correct way to reboot that is to just pull its power cord out 🙂
Devices with no "dynamic" storage have less issues with outages (as long as there are no power surges which fry them).
The Green is intermittently writing to its storage. If an outage happens at the wrong time, it can cause issues.
Same applies to PCs.
Most of these UPS have kettle lead outputs. I have 3-pin UK plug in transformers. So a bit of a hunt
I do actually have huge power bank thing, one meant for camping but that's far too bulky
Attractive design and glossy finish make the 3S a perfect fit for the modern office environment.. Eaton 3S Gen2 is a UPS using Off-Line Technology: - provides power and surge protection for desktop computers, wireless networks, gaming consoles, and other critical equipment in your home or busines...
Do they produce a lot of heat? Currently I have my comms equipment and hubs in a high up wall cupboard
Maybe something like that. However I do not recommend the Mini UPS from Eaton (the one for around 49 GBP). It cannot communicate to HA and its quality is not great.
They generate a bit of heat (warm to the touch), but are still fanless
Actually it would be enough if it just alerted me then I could shut it down myself. I am retired and always home
And they are heavy due to the batteries inside.
The Mini (the one I did not recommend) doesn't do both. It doesn't alert and it doesn't let HA know about it.
I am trying to remember the HA Green power connection. is it USB or a transformer with barrel connector?
Note that some of those eaton variants cannot be oriented freely.
Thanks for the headsup - my space is somewhat limited
The Green has a barrel connector. 5.5 x 2.1 mm center positive 12V 1A
Ok, so I'd need a 3-pin outlet on the UPS. And how does it shut down the Green? By USB? Currently I have both occupied by a zigbee and zwave dongle so that then needs a USB hub to extend the number of ports
Might be easier to just automate a daily full backup and upload to Google
Do the full backups include the zigbee and zwave data?
If it is NUT compatible and has a USB port, it can be connected to the Green via it. The NUT add-on (and the according integration) provide the communication.
Yes.
I think I'll work on getting that done first. Then go shopping
I think it will take a while to find a UPS that fits my needs
NUT compatible I will remmeber
The benefit of daily backups is a UPS can't help me if I make a mess of something while configuring 😄
If you find one that suits your spacial needs and power plug - don't hesitate to ask in this channel, if it is good for use with HA, before buying it.
Thank you

done (I think)
Thank you!
