#Local Connection lost
1 messages ยท Page 1 of 1 (latest)
i have my deco mesh as a wifi router. It says on ti: in wifi router mode, deco conncets to the internet directly via dynamic ip, static ip, pppoe and shares internet accesss to multiple wired or wireless devices. NAT and DHCP servers are enabled by default.
You don't want it in router mode unless that's your only router
You want access point or extender
That is my only router as I turned my IP router off
We need a wiring diagram - how is everything connected

If you change your at&t back as a router ( what i thit it shoudl be) then https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1842/
What is that?
I think you need to look in the DECO device and see what it is listing for DHCP servers and subnets. In that snippit you gave:
NAT and DHCP servers are enabled by default.
That implies more than one ๐ฎ
I will look
That's a switch
Even worse, it's ancient
So, ISP router -> switch
Deco in AP mode, LAN port connected ISP router
Cut the 1970's switch out
internet->at&t(dns+dhcp+nat)-> HUB ->deco(dns+dhcp+nat) ........?????????
ok, so i should just go back to the at&t router and just use the deco as access poitns?
Yes
ok i will do that and let you know how it goes
yes of-course .... your deco shoudl just act as "wifi cable", nothing smart ๐ ... pure access-point!
If everything isn't in the same subnet then you didn't get it right
It's even worst.. it's a HUB not even a switch!
I thought that with 100 Mb it had to be a switch
If it really is a hub though, that's ... impressive
No my friend ... ๐ HUB was used to move from daisy-chained coax cables to ethernet cables in star topology...
I've seen plenty of 10 Mb hubs in my time, don't remember seeing 100 Mb, but that was a while ago
That's new fangled stuff
i guess he used it to connect tv/playstation...
And i think tha lan port 1 of the at&t is a 5gbit port ๐ . It should be used for the deco.
I looked at the amazon page again, that description is word vomit but it appears to actually be a switch ๐
Going back to the at&t router worked. I have local access now. Do i need to create a static IP now?
i went to network--configure---made static? correct
yes
connected directly into the modem
your DHCP is providing ip within a range ( let's say 100 up to 200) what you can do is to assign a static ip below 100 (outside of the range). which is free of-course
Yeah, would say you may want to rework or re-organize your layout of your network. The general layout would be Router/Model -> switch
and then Wifi AP (in AP only mode) -> switch, all other wired devices -> switch
so now you have a different gateway/dns server, guessing that comes from the ISP modem
yes
I'd make sure your AP isn't also broadcasting DHCP
and made my decos access points only
ok, so you have DHCP disabled at your ISP modem
so that stuff is coming from the DECO device
which is fine, just trying to make sure lol
No he went back to the default i think. at&t is the dns and dhcp
๐ตโ๐ซ
Ok, so that's from the ISP router/Modem, which is fine. So structurally I'd say you should eventually get a modern 100/1000 switch, plug your modem into that switch on like port 1 (we consider that the "uplink" port), and the other end into the "switch" part of your ISP modem. Then your AP into port 2 of this new switch, then all your other wired devices into that switch. Then you have a good topology that should be less confusing for you ๐
he has enough ports on the at&t at the moment.
- at&t -> deco ( to cover the whole house using mesh wifi ).
- at&t -> current switch for some local hardwired devices ( TV .... )
can your recommend some modern 100/1000?
The one you have is fine if you don't plug anything requiring very high speed... what is connected to it ?
just my remote work. i work from home. So mainly my job uses it. And my unraid server
ahh .... then ... indeed, i would change it ! ๐ which deco do you have ?
For what it's worth, static DHCP leases are way smarter than doing static IP settings on hosts
x3600
Yeah I would leave your ISP modem settings alone since you are using that as your DHCP, as long aps you have just ONE DHCP/DNS on the network (IW your AP isn't also broadcasting DHCP ๐ )
I would think if you don't need anything managed, could get a basic NetGear or TP-Link switch, really just up to preference
Same advice. your deco have 1Gb ports. No need to spend money for nothing. Netgear and tp-link are just fine ( +/- 20$ )
10x faster for 20 bucks ๐
probably reduced latency too
@mystic igloo , about swap. I have disabled swap on all my VM. Even Proxmox cannot swap anymore ๐ .
so im fine now with what i have?
Looking at your network pictures, I'm not sure of the config. It looks as if you have both the ISP router/modem and the AP plugged into the switch at the same time, while also having the AP plugged directly into the modem, but I am not sure if that's actually what is going on or if the pictures are just misleading ๐
i think he changed the connections .... not sure ๐
so i plugged my deco directly into my modem. The otehr devices are plugeed into the tplink 8 Port 10/100Mbps
question tho. i turned on my at&t modem wifi and deco has its own seprate wifi ssid while in access point mode. is that ok or disable my at&t wifi again?
I think U have a free LAN port on your modem. U could conect your Unraid directly there. ( 100Mbits => 1Gbit network)
The bottom blue ethernet port i think is LAN 2.5Gbit ...
it says 1 and 5GB on it
that's fine ๐
trying it out now
so my HA is working fine but now my deco is loosing connection constintley. the main deco is working fine but the other two around my house looses connection. i was reading articles that people suggest ip passthrough for connectivity?
one employee from the forum suggested:If your modem from your ISP is providing a wireless connection and can operate as a router, you will also need to enable Bridge or IP passthrough mode to have a stable network. Otherwise, you will have to use AP mode on the Decos, which will use the ISP router for management, and the Decos could then be connected to multiple ports on your modem - but you will lose most of the advanced configuration for your mesh.
wifi of your ISP modem is already disabled.
could you powercycle your "satellites" deco ?
I mean swith off all "satelites", then swith on the closest one.
Any LED on deco ?
https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/1590/
".... Satellite Deco will join the Deco network automatically within two minutes after you power them on if the Main Deco and the Satellite Deco are from the same package."
I keep getting this error when i loose connection from home assistant
HA Logs: https://dpaste.org/DA95E

Host: https://dpaste.org/1t439
OOM killer is killing processes, usually means your server needs more ram
Probably a problem with an add-on, ones like Studio Code are known to be RAM hungry
could it be mqtt or ESPHome? when i install on ESPHome i loose connection sometimes?
Compiling could cause that, yes
so i would have to get more ram then
having memory issues
Hi @mystic igloo on which hardware are you running HA ?
A zimaboard
But I just started a new HA on my unraid server as an VM. Thinking of starting from scratch. I gave the VM 8gb of ram
I still have the previous one up until I can confirm the new one is solid to run
I think you will not regret it. How many Gb is your zimaboard ?
More RAM yes, or stop using the Zimbaboard for compiling ESPHome
4GB and my new VM is 8GB
So I have moved my HA system to my unraid VM with more ram and move my deco from wifi router to access point. Everything is working fine. I just cant get a local connection from HA.local. I have access to everything else: nabu casa and ip_address:8123. Just not local. It still uses my old HA for local. How do i move it to the new Unraid VM for local access.
