#anyhow... it's not working and the

Have a look at https://community.home-assistant.io/t/remote-access-for-home-assistant/206072, and remember that HA uses port 8123, not port 80
The other thing I'd add to the there's lots of ways to do SSL in HA is that a lot of people never set up remote access and have no need of SSL
Thank you! I really appreciate your answer + write up โ this is somewhat more complicated than expected. I will have to look up a lot ... CGNAT? Aaah never heard of that?! ๐
The easy option is to pay for the Nabu Casa cloud service
The slightly less easy option if you have your own domain is to use a Cloudflare Tunnel
yeah I got a few domains
CF tunnels are worth a look then
cloudflare tunnel sounds also like it's costing money?
Nah, free if you've got a domain with CF
(and by that really just the DNS)
You can almost certainly make it work even if you don't have DNS there, it'll just be harder
why is it so complicated vs. setting up SSH remote access within 5 seconds?
Because SSL
You can issue your own SSH keys, job done
SSL requiers a CA issues certs for a domain you control
SSH works fine with anything
If you already had working HTTPS remote access for something else, using a reverse proxy, you could have just added HA to the proxy config and be done
Traefik FTW
yeah I'm thinking hard right now trying to remember if I ever had a service setup with SSL at home
but probably you're right
I am still not understanding why a simple 8123 forward didn't work - without HTTPS/SSL. Is there an apparent reason for this or worth investigating?
