Why wifi? Wifi + batteries isn't common. I have had good luck with the cheap aqara zigbee door and window sensors. Coin cell batteries should last about a year so people do thing like wrap the main unit in electrical tape before mounting, or place in any weatherproof box. The second piece of the sensor is really just a magnet so it doesnt need waterproofing. You can glue any rare earth magnet to the other side of the gate components, or if it is wooden, drill a hole and embed the magnet, etc.

you can look into yealink LoRa products

#

if range is an issue as well if battery powered is a must, not wifi, needs a hub, but integrated in HA (through hub) and very energy efficient/long-range as well as water-proof (some products)

#

sorry but as told, wifi, battery and long-range is not good combination

#

it's not very long range, it's right outside my bedroom. and i dont have zigbee, i have zwave which is more limited

#

limited in hardware available for it..

#

i just spent some time browsing these things and im thinking maybe i dont even need to hook this up to HA. basically i just want a chime when it opens and theres a lot of self-contained units for cheap with the receiver and transmitter

topaz musk
#

sorry, same same, zwave, at least with the new 800 standard is quite long range as well, depending on your area you might find some good sensors out there

#

we are in HA discord, non-smart would be boring πŸ˜„

tribal field
#

the Lora stuff looks interesting

#

yeah I know right? haha

#

there's some Tuya garbage for like $11 but ehh I think i'll keep looking

topaz musk
#

it indeed is, it's the most battery-efficient sensor out there, at least the ones which can talk to HA

tribal field
#

you need a LoRa receiver on your HA device I imagine then

topaz musk
#

or buy the tuya garbage, put it in a plastic bag all around for water-proofing and buy some spares and see how it goes

#

that's the hub you'd need to buy, yes you'd need

tribal field
#

i'll check that out then. thanks!

topaz musk
#

report here for results and feel free to ping me, also wanted to go with LoRa stuff for some applications πŸ‘

topaz musk
#

YoLink, not yealink, sorry

#

that's the most common lora stuff out there

#

yep, that;s th eones

#

but unfortunately I have no first hand experience

#

the only minus for me is that as of now it's cloud integrated into HA, the yolink hub, meaning if the company/servers go tits up you got electric waste on your hands. The new yolink hub which is supposed to come "soon" (tm) is supposed to have also local connectivity

tribal field
#

ohh.. dang

#

although i'm not as picky about "fully local" because I already have a few cloud devices πŸ‘οΈ

#

damn tuyaconvert not working on new stuff

topaz musk
#

yeah, I also got few tuya devices but fortunately they work with tuya local, I feel your pain

tribal field
#

I picked up the yolink speaker hub and two outdoor gate sensors for about $50. will report later on them. much smaller than I thought!

@tribal field fyi you don’t really need a hub for HA compatable with zigbee or Zwave, you just need a usb dongle on your HA box. I use the Sonoff zigbee dongle.

#

I’m not familiar with yolink. Have fun!

ok so yesterday I set up my contact sensors and the integration and i was so impressed with this system that I bought 3 more indoor door sensors and a vibration sensor i plan to put in my car that arrive today

#

however, I woke up this morning and one of the two gate sensors is "offline" with no reason given

#

i pushed the little button on the sensor and it's not dead

#

so .... completely lost on why it's not connected to the hub

#

it was working fine yesterday and it's not more than like 30m from the hub

tribal field
#

not sure what hte issue is, putting in a support request but I've read from reviews their support is terrible. hopefully this is just a fluke. i guess i'll know once i installed the 5 other devices i just bought 🀨

Did the weather condition change, is your hub close to a microwave or sth? Just to exclude external interference.
