I'm gonna thread this for now until it's more HA related.

#

Proxmox VE installation

rugged nexus
#

Alright looks better now @elder rose

#

Dns is 192.168.1.1 thi

#

Tho

#

How do i figure out what I should put as dns?

#

Both gateway and dns are at 192.168.1.1

elder rose
#

DNS can be either your gateway or a public DNS server. Gateway is basically your router and most consumer routers have a DNS server included. You can also use a public DNS like 1.1.1.1 but I'd stick to what you have.

rugged nexus
#

Alright. Thanks. I’m installing now!

#

If anything’s wrong in the ip settings, can I edit that later?

#

Or do I need to uninstall/install

#

How long does it take to install, you’d say? Sorry if I’m boring you with these silly questions mate, haha

elder rose
#

Yes. The PVE install is very fast. Maybe 2-5 minutes?

rugged nexus
#

It seems to be stuck at ‘create LVs’

#

3% since it begun

#

3mins now

elder rose
#

How big are your disks? Or at least the one you install onto.

rugged nexus
#

500gb

rugged nexus
#

It’s still stuck. With no buttons to press..

#

Ah there’s the Abort button

#

What now?

elder rose
#

I'd give it some time. But not more than 5 minutes. Creating Thin LVs can be slow on some disks.

rugged nexus
#

Alright. 7 minutes have passed and it’s at 3%

#

‘Create lvs’

elder rose
#

Yeah then something has got to be wrong.

rugged nexus
#

What can it be?

rugged nexus
#

Probably IPs or stuff?

elder rose
#

No. LV is storage related.

rugged nexus
#

But what is the right path to fix this issue now?
Well I would consider to clear ur TPM, if u had it running before, check the storage setting, if its on AHCI or RAID, change it and try it again,

#

Someone wrote

#

How to clear tpm?

rugged nexus
#

Nothing on it

elder rose
#

I'm not sure. I can only refer you to those posts or others you can find with proxmox stuck Create lvs.

rugged nexus
#

😦

#

Well thanks bud

#

This suxx

#

This guy spend 2 days to find the fix lmao

#

Lollll

#

I don’t have time like that to figure out the issue unfortunately

#

But I really appreciate your assistance and your thinking with me💯❤️

#

@elder rose I'll just leave it at 3% I guess

#

for a good hour or two

#

I'm clueless about what else to do

elder rose
#

Not quite sure, there can be a few different causes I guess.

rugged nexus
#

Well this sucks. Still haven't been able to figure it out 😦

elder rose
#

You can install debian and install PVE on it. Maybe you can try another disk first?

rugged nexus
#

What if i edit the hard disk options?

#

Filesystem is ext4 now

rugged nexus
#

Its a new disk as well. This one

elder rose
#

An operating system.

rugged nexus
#

I’ll stick to Windows…

#

Don’t want to make it more complicated for me

elder rose
#

HA does not really support windows well.

rugged nexus
#

Hmm…

#

Crap

elder rose
#

And virtualization software on windows is mostly kaka.

rugged nexus
#

How can I run HA OS?

#

Linux, ubuntu?

elder rose
#

This is bare metal. You can also install debian and run it in docker.

rugged nexus
#

I can work with these two I guess but never heard about debian

elder rose
#

All the options kind of need quite a bit of technical knowledge.

rugged nexus
#

Well

#

I learn fast

elder rose
#

PVE is initially harder but gives you an environment to learn withour breaking much.

#

Unfortunately I don't know why you issue occurs. The things I linked had multiple different causes so i cant't test them for you.

rugged nexus
#

What would you suggest me to do from here?

elder rose
#

I'd grab a USB stick, install ventoy on it and drop the proxmox iso and the debian iso on it. Then try if the debian installer has the same issue.

rugged nexus
#

have you heard of openmediavault?

elder rose
#

Yes but it's not a good option to run VMs in my opinion. It also is still on debian 11. I don't like it much.

rugged nexus
#

look what they have

#

do we have something like this on what you're recommending?

elder rose
#

That's portainer.

rugged nexus
#

oh cool!

#

so...

#

can I pull this off with linux or ubuntu?

#

or do i need debian rly

elder rose
#

It just depends if you want HAOS or not.

rugged nexus
#

the question is, do I need it?

#

I want an as smooth as possible environment

#

the best way to set this up

elder rose
#

No, you can run the addons' software through docker yourself. More work but also more flexibility.

rugged nexus
#

sounds good

elder rose
#

But let's keep this thread proxmox VE related.

rugged nexus
#

so what I want is.. I want to run loads of stuff on the s12 mini pro

#

I want HA, but I want other stuff on it as well

#

where do I go form here?

elder rose
#

Yeah then you don't want HAOS.

rugged nexus
#

ok gotcha

elder rose
#

Or at least not just HAOS.

rugged nexus
#

indeed

#

what do I want then? 😄

elder rose
#

I still recommend proxmox.

rugged nexus
#

alright

elder rose
#

You can run one VM with your docker containers or whatever and one running HAOS.

rugged nexus
#

gotcha

#

so you still recommend me to run Proxmox on Debian 12?

#

can I run all the other stuff I want on Debian 12 as well?

elder rose
#

How long have you left the installer at the Create LVs step? What have you tried from my links?

#

Not HAOS but you can run all the docker containers you want.

#

I mean you can virtualize on debian too, PVE is based on debian, but it kind of sucks doing this via the CLI only.

rugged nexus
elder rose
#

PVE gives you a GUI and tools for it.

#

You could try the debug installer like one of the staff mentioned.

rugged nexus
#

will check!

#

what OS does this guy use?

elder rose
#

Where exactly? Most of what you see here is the proxmox VE GUI.

rugged nexus
#

what's he running Proxmox one?

#

is it just Windows?

elder rose
#

Proxmox VE is a debian OS with tools and a GUI to virtualize.

rugged nexus
#

which runs on top of Windows?

elder rose
#

No. Debian is its own OS.

rugged nexus
#

but I'm now trying to install Proxmox VE on my Windows mini pc right?

elder rose
#

Windows is just a pre-installed operating system. If you install proxmox VE windows is replaced.

rugged nexus
#

oh I see!

#

now it makes sense

#

I'll try to follow the link that I shared with you

#

let's see where we end p

elder rose
#

I wonder why it shuts down after 30 minutes.

#

How did you create the installer btw?

rugged nexus
#

Rufus

#

wait I will try to do something else now

#

will keep you updated

elder rose
#

I recommend ventoy (latest version).

#

The cool thing about ventoy is that you can use the stick like a normal stick for your data too and can simply drop .iso files in there.

rugged nexus
#

how much gb should I allocate to PROXMOX

#

hdsize

#

during install

#

ok it worked

#

its installed

elder rose
#

Sorry, was researching something. You likely don't need more than 100G.

rugged nexus
#

I allocated 32gb

#

hey mate, a new problem has occured

elder rose
#

That is enough for the OS but if you want to store a few isos and backups you need more.

rugged nexus
#

backups of what?

elder rose
#

Your VMs/CTs.

rugged nexus
#

on my pc

#

it says the site is not reachable

elder rose
#

Did it pick that ip itself in the installer?

rugged nexus
rugged nexus
#

and the device is on now

#

and it also shows that ip

#

i need to enter my pass

#

but I want to do that through the web

elder rose
#

Run and show the results of ip a and systemctl status pveproxy.service.
Log in as root and your password you set earlier.

rugged nexus
#

on the device itself?

elder rose
#

Yes

Please use imgur or other image sharing web sites, and share the link here.

Image posting is blocked in most channels to discourage people from sharing text as images. Sharing text as images assumes that everybody sees the world as you do, which isn't the case. Some people are colour blind, or have visual impairment that means they can't make sense of an image of text.

rugged nexus
#

it says login incorrect

#

it says proxmox01 login:

#

and then password:

#

i know my password

#

but whats my login? lol

elder rose
rugged nexus
#

apologies

#

ok im in

rugged nexus
#

command not found

#

i cant copy paste it either

elder rose
#

Make sure you typed it correctly. Maybe show me a picture of it.

rugged nexus
#

since im on different devices

#

the ip a doesnt say much

#

what exactly do you want to see?

elder rose
#

Everything.

rugged nexus
#

what specifically do you want to see?

#

inet is 192.168.100.2/24

#

inet6 is the device mac adress

elder rose
#

The ip of your NIC and its status.

rugged nexus
#

i cant share a screenshot here

elder rose
rugged nexus
#

i cant screenshot on another device and share it here

#

lol

#

xD

#

there's no way i can show you right now

#

ip a looks fine

elder rose
#

You can take a picture with your phone or log into discord with your other device. Lots of ways.

rugged nexus
#

how do you want me to login on discord on my other device

#

i cant even login into the system? 😄

elder rose
#

Your other device being the server?

rugged nexus
#

yep

elder rose
#

Oh, no, of course not.

#

Servers don't have GUIs usually. At least not ones you use via keyboard and monitor.

rugged nexus
#

no clue how i can show you buddy

elder rose
#

Like I said, take a picture with your phone.

#

Otherwise try systemctl status pveproxy.service again. That's the service servicing you on 8006.

rugged nexus
#

ok that command worked now

#

' active' since 13 min ago

#

' pvecm[986]: got inotify poll request in wrong process - disabling inotify

#

is the only line which is colored red

#

what should we see here?

elder rose
#

If it's active it should be okay. Can you tell me the ip of your devicve you use to access8006?

rugged nexus
#

lol

#

you're asking me to share my public ip address bro?

#

ill just reinstall

#

and give the device a fixed ip this time

elder rose
#

No I'm asking you for your device's local (LAN) address. I want to know if you are in the same subnet as the server. It's possible you have multiple routers or whatever.

#

It already has a fixed ip, btw.

rugged nexus
#

this is on 192.168.100.2

#

including the device I'm typing from right now

elder rose
#

Okay that's what I wanted to know.

#

Your server should be in the same subnet.

#

Where's it plugged in?

rugged nexus
#

same switch

#

so I need to change the ip on the mini pc now?

elder rose
#

I'm confused why it would get such a different ip.

rugged nexus
#

yep

#

never saw .100 on my networks

#

so i should manually change/add it

elder rose
#

You can either re-install or follow my link from earlier. The one to the other discord server.

rugged nexus
#

ill just re install

#

but it doesnt boot my usb anymore

#

eventhough its forced to boot the usb

elder rose
#

But before that I would try to figure out why your router is giving it this ip address and your other decvices get something else.

rugged nexus
#

why?

#

i can manually edit the ip no?

#

and make it fixed on the same .1 subnet

elder rose
#

Maybe. I don't know your networking environment but that sounds really quite wrong.

#

If all are connected to the same switch and it's a dumb switch they should usually get the same ip range allocated.

#

Different ip ranges can only communicate if they are routed by something.

rugged nexus
#

how to force the usb to boot after proxmox got succesfully installed already?

rugged nexus
#

and this is the first time its showing me this subnet

elder rose
#

There should be a key you can press to temporarily select a boot device. Or you can fix it in the UEFI to boot from it.

elder rose
#

Maybe PVE pulled it out of its ass but usually the installer gets an ip via DHCP assigned by your router.

rugged nexus
#

could be

#

prolly pulled out of its ass

#

cuz it showed me that while trying to setup without a cable as well lol

#

afaik

elder rose
#

With a smart switch you could have VLANs or other such things but I'm just confused at the moment.

rugged nexus
#

btw, its already set on USB Device as boot #1

#

it doesnt boot it tho

#

how to force boot it?

rugged nexus
#

cuz I'm doing lots of stuff on this network

#

this is just a little side project

elder rose
#

I recommend you go into your router and check the DHCP range and subnet. Then choose a ip that is outside of it. I use .100-200 for DHCP and everything outside for static stuff.

rugged nexus
#

its just not booting the usb lol, so frustrating

rugged nexus
#

but i cant seem to boot the usb anymore bro

elder rose
#

Maybe you overwrote it somehow? You can re-flash it.

rugged nexus
#

doubt

elder rose
#

The installer shouldn't let you but as I'm already guessing around, why not do it some more.

rugged nexus
#

also

#

the issue causing the 3%

#

was the disk format

#

you need to install PROXMOX VME on zfl 0raid

#

you didnt know that? 😮

elder rose
#

No you don't need to do that. I certainly don't.

rugged nexus
#

that's what fixed it for me

#

zfs* btw

#

reflashing and trying again now

elder rose
#

I wouldn't recommend ZFS for linux beginners. It's also kinda harsh on the disks and ZVOLs are slow.

rugged nexus
#

wdym with zvols are slow?

elder rose
#

Just google zvol iowait and zvol freeze.

rugged nexus
#

i see

#

zvol is ZFS?

elder rose
#

Part of it. ZVOLs are used when you create a disk for a VM/CT.

rugged nexus
#

so i should just use the ext4 system?

#

instead of zfs

elder rose
#

LVM is kind of the default and performans rather well usually.

rugged nexus
#

whats lvm

#

another system?

rugged nexus
#

look

#

i need to pick something as filesystem

#

it shows ext4

#

xfs

#

zfs

#

btrfs

#

what should i select?

elder rose
#

Just the default. EXT4 is fine.

rugged nexus
#

alright

#

trying now

#

alright

#

now its showing .1 subnet automatically

#

this thing is tripping

#

what should I put as hdsize

#

as ext4 system?

#

its trying to take the full 500gb now

#

I'll put 64gb there?

#

as hdsize [ext4]

elder rose
#

If you leave it as is it should use 100G or so.

#

Like I said, defaults.

rugged nexus
#

thats recommended?

#

ok

#

now

#

i pressed backspace

#

to check the disk format/size etc

#

and now im at the management network config

#

it shows .100.2 again

#

so its tripping

#

i should just use .1.159 manually?

#

as thats what it was on 1 min ago?

elder rose
#

Sure, why not.

rugged nexus
#

aight

elder rose
#

But please don't barrage me with messages. I get pinged for all of them in a thread like this. Just write a full sentence 🙂

rugged nexus
#

it's stuck on create LVs 3% again 🙂

#

so its the disk format causing the issue

elder rose
#

I wonder why LVM and your HDD don't like each other.

rugged nexus
#

its the stock beelink s12 n100 mini pc

#

so yeah

#

lots of ppl are using it.. not sure with what configs tho

#

ill just use zfl

#

w/e

elder rose
#

Better than nothing, I guess.

rugged nexus
#

xD

#

ill leave it until it restarts itself again first, because maybe the restart means it got installed successfully

#

last time i didnt unplug the usb, thats why i maybe thought that it wasnt succesfull. maybe it just got the #1 boot of the usb again, while it got installed successfully. let's wait for a bit

rugged nexus
#

precisely what I said....

#

happened...

rugged nexus
#

I have a questions buddy

#

I'm in my NAT section inside my router, but I can't find the .159 device.. which should be the Beelink

#

I did reboot it, but it should still have .1.159 right?

elder rose
#

You want the DHCP section. Besides, The 159 is not being used via DHCP any more right now so your router won't list it. You should still reserve it so it's not used for anything else.

rugged nexus
#

Good point!

#

It's at .231 right now!

#

My bro, thank you SO SO much by the way! Even when I was being clueless at some point, you helped me through

#

Thanks! @elder rose 💯

elder rose
#

No problem.

rugged nexus
#

Anything I should be doing with my .1.231 IP?

#

Don't want things to mess up with power outages etc

elder rose
#

Such as?

rugged nexus
#

Idk

#

So how do I use my mini pc for anything other than Proxmox now?

elder rose
#

What do you want to do?

rugged nexus
#

Jellyfish, and many more use cases

#

As I said I want to use the mini pc for multiple use cases..

elder rose
#

You create a VM or CT and run your stuff in it.

rugged nexus
#

Oh nice!

#

How do I get access to that project container

#

Or what we were discussing earlier?

elder rose
#

Portainer?

rugged nexus
#

Yessir

elder rose
#

You install it in a VM. I recommend debian as OS.

rugged nexus
#

How do I do that?

elder rose
#

You google those terms. Debian proxmox, debian portainer and so on.

rugged nexus
#

Alright!

#

such as this?

elder rose
#

Well first comes the debian OS.

rugged nexus
#

oh..

elder rose
#

But nomthose docs aren't good. You want to use the docker apt repo.

rugged nexus
elder rose
#

What do you mean which VM?

rugged nexus
#

can you possibly share a good guide?

#

I'll be able to manage myself that way, don't want to keep bothering you either...

#

haha

elder rose
#

I recommend the official docs of docker and portainer.

rugged nexus
#

Checking!

#

What do I have to do though, can you write it in a sentence?

#

I have to install Debias OS in VM so I can install Portainer?

elder rose
#

You need an OS, correct. On that OS you can install software like portainer which is just a GUI for docker.

rugged nexus
#

I'm really struggling to understand how I can install a new OS, new software on that OS..

#

I have proxmox now..

#

how do I install a new OS on it in VM?

elder rose
#

Like I said, google debian proxmox. Take a look at youtube.

#

It's not really possible or enjoyable to give you step by step guide here. Besides there are already a lof of them.

rugged nexus
#

Alright, doing now! Thanks again!

rugged nexus
#

this is exactly what I was doing, right? for HA

#

do I have to do it again?
