there might be an issue with my internet provider that potentially blocks incoming http traffic (i found this out the hard way when setting up nextcloud a while back)

neat finch
#

do you use any other cloud services that you did not set up? If yes, then it has nothing to do w/ http

#

nabucasa's connection is like any other cloud service, amazon, google home, etc

#

are you sure you put the correct URL in? Are you sure you used https://?

pale swallow
#

trust me, my incoming http traffic IS blocked

neat finch
#

ok, well nabucasa only works over https

#

which is why I keep saying this

#

and why your comment doesn't make sense

pale swallow
#

the url is correct (its actually a link one could click on the nabu casa website)

#

jeez, http / https

#

same protocol

neat finch
#

if it's blocking https, you wouldn't be able to access anything on the internet, ever

pale swallow
#

i didnt say outgoing, i said incoming

#

and i am living in a country that actually does those things

neat finch
#

... how do you think a website loads information

#

Are you sure they aren't blocking inbound ports?

#

which is different

pale swallow
#

incoming traffic works the other way around, which, and i hope you see that, is different from outgoing traffic

#

just, for the giggle, it would help if you could pretend that you believe me that incoming http traffic is indeed blocked.

#

what would be my options then

neat finch
#

vpn

pale swallow
#

i thought so too, but i can not install a vpn CLIENT on the HA server.. all addons are vpn servers

#

vpn and ddns client

#

imho

#

coz my "vpn ip" is different from my home internet ip

neat finch
#

all you need is your phone to have a vpn client that accesses your internal network

#

that just runs in the background

pale swallow
#

yeah, but wouldnt it be cooler to have the ha server connect to the internet via vpn?

#

no need to install things on phones, tablets, whatever

pale swallow
#

be able to connect to HA via any client without the need for a vpn connection, like browsers

pale swallow
#

ha, i just found out how to login. so, the x64 install also just runs docker (which is shocking), so i just can run it inside a docker myself. and have the host os of my choice

#

and i can run whatever i want on that host

#

why do you think the nabu casa tunnels uses incoming connections? how do you think they get past your routers firewall?

pale swallow
#

anyway, i fixed it. installed arch real quick, then home-assistant and on top wireguard

#

wireguard starts at boot connecting to proton vpn

#

now i can connect via the external url as well

neat finch
#

Keep in mind, you're replying to people who actively work on what you're talking about

proven robin
#

Just to be clear when we talk about inbound and outbound we are talking about which end initiated the tcp connection 😅

#

Your ha server connects to the nabu casa proxy. That’s an outbound connection.

#

They might multiplex multiple encrypted connections inside a tunnel

#

So in your head then

#

I’m talking about how the protocol works

pale swallow
#

as i said in post #2 : my internet provider that potentially blocks incoming http traffic

pale swallow
#

but whatever. i figured it out. go, play with someone else

neat finch
#

Yeah, goodbye

proven robin
#

Amazing

#

😅

neat finch
#

he's gone, no need for that attitude
