#Tinkerer one question I recently saw

It was me, there's no solution I know of other than buying a TV with a better integration
FYI they all suck
but samsung is espeically bad
bravia seems OK but it has it's own issues
Roku ... rocks
Sure, but you either get janky integrations, or they know all the NetFlix you watch
Jokes on them, we don't use any of the apps 🤣
Yeah, IMO the only reason I integrate my TV is for the on/off ability
which roku can do
or a broadlink
and possibly the input selections
Yeah, I like it as it means I can finally turn the TV of automatically when the Sky TV box and PS5 are both off, and "somebody" forgot to turn the TV off
I still use a logictech remote to do all that kind of stuff
but when I get my next TV...
GOODBYE logitech
HA makes it so you can pretty much do that
that doesn't sound great - especially for automations, also what I recognised is that, if you turn it on via the classic signal to the TV, it turns on ONLY if it was actually turned off (not in the grace period), buuut during that period you can turn it on/off via the remote integration
it would be great to be able to create a sensor to figure out what's the real status of the tv and, based on that, I think it would be possible to work out a stable on/off mechanism
A energy monitor on the TV's plug
uh that's smart
I should try to read more about samsung APIs though, because maybe there is something indicating that the TV is in this sort of "idle" status
I doubt it
these companies do the bare minimum
they want you using thier stuff, not other stuff using them
Also they don't have a consistent API over time
yeah, that's a major one too
Different generations of TV have different OSs and different APIs
Yamaha is actually one of the few companies that does have this, but they don't make TVs
So I use my yamaha reciever and roku to do basically everything
and I just have an on/off thing for my TV and nothing else is plugged into the TV
but they do have a smarthing app if I am not mistaken and I hardly doubt that does not work in recognising the tv status, that kinda gives me confidence there
yes, but what you aren't understanding still, is that the app uses thier own api and it's not the same api they give out to customers
Just look at Alexa
you can't get anything out of those devices, yet they still have an app
and samsung is notorious for this type of thing
They have ads on thier TV UI, that should show you their intentions
The app probably uses a private cloud API
it does
My parents own samsung, I refuse to buy them
but I have my parents house automated
I ended up disconnecting the TVs from the internet, and use a broadlink for on/off w/ an energy monitor. The TV stays on HDMI1 w/ a yamaha network receiver doing all the work
now it's a TV with full control.
I gotta say ads in the TV are really off putting and one of the reasons why I'd struggle to buy samsung again .. it's astonishing they contractually can
Well, you can always go with another brand.
that's likely yes, I will anyhow try to understand a bit more about home assistant when it comes to development, so far I have been just a very passive user
I'd consider doing so for a future tv for sure, also because tizen os has a very limited ecosystem
You can get a broadlink for $50 that can control your TV
to be honest, the more I see this type of hardware, including google minis, chromecast, and all of that, the more I dream of white labeled hardware ehe
controlling is "easy", it's the TV status that is driving me insane, but maybe that would work via a broadlink as you mentioned
I just the idea to put an extra piece of hardware because the tv is that dumb -.-
So, all logitech and these other remote companies do is keep a boolean in the background
they frequently get out of sync if you use a separate remote
so, this is nothing new
I removed the batteries from the other remotes and hid them.
they can only use 1 remote
I used to keep remotes out so I could fix things and I put a big sticker that implied do not touch on them. They still touched them.
if you want a bullet proof system, build it and make sure they can only use 1 avenue to do things.
