The "right" approach according to the devs is entities, not attributes, but historically that wasn't the "right" thing to do
Until devices existed there wasn't any way of linking together related entities, so attributes made a lot of sense. These days devices exist, so attributes don't always make sense, but sometimes they do (weather forecast, GPS location, and more)

Ok, so attributes are a bit legacy issue, a new better way is to organize stuff with devices and entities
