As an alternative to HA built-in bluetooth tracking, the monitor script uses separate devices, usually Pi Zeroes, to track bluetooth devices.
It uses MQTT topics to relay device status messages to HA. See this forum thread for more.

if you need room presence detection then yes, I don't actually need it at this point since I don't don't plan on using room automations

I did set my router to the default dns. all my other devices are correctly connected to internet.
I try a wipe and restore, only change was the ad guard thing because I see that pihole is deprecated.

I'm going through the DuckDNS config...I've created my account and generated my sub-domain. In the instructions, it says "In the DuckDNS add-on configuration, perform the following..." and lists out steps to specify the token and sub-domain...my question is, where is that configuration?
Am I supposed to add the provided lines to my configuration.yaml file? Or is there supposed to be a UI configuration?

There we go. Little indicator light turned from grey to green...and I now have Restart and Stop options
And now the log is showing me info
I'll let you play around for a bit because describing every little thing is weird. Start it. Observe. Stop it. Observe. Get to know it.
All other addons you choose will behave similarly.
If you try to start an addon and it flashes red after you click it, check the logs on the System page to look for a reason.

Good to know. The Start button did flash red when I first tried starting it...I just figured that was part of the normal behavior

@latent marten very confused. I don't know where it went. But you need to edit configuration.yaml and add http: base_url: your_domain.duckdns.org ssl_certificate: /ssl/fullchain.pem ssl_key: /ssl/privkey.pem
Those two ssl_ lines more or less "enable" the ssl, and after a restart you will only be able to reach your frontend using https://

@latent marten a common thing people do is remove the # but they do not move http: itself over to the left, leaving it hanging out with a space in front of it

@sly kindle I've got a problem. I fixed my spacing in the file, and now http access no longer works (like you said). When I use https, then I get the warning, but I can get through. But now I need to enter my username/password. It's not taking my UN/PW combo, but I know it's right...so I did some digging for resetting a password, and when I try the command ha authentication reset --username "<username>" --password "<new PW>", I get a result of "Unknown Error, see logs"
The logs aren't very helpful (to me, at least). It's not something apparent that is the matter
logs referred to there are the supervisor logs

@hoary storm The hostname will different between repositories. It is made up of the repo hash and the add-on name. Behind the scenes, it is actually the name of the Docker container.

I am stuck on getting my router port forwarding set up correctly...any good resources anyone would recommend for troubleshooting?
I've been able to get it most of the way there by tinkering...now, when I enter https://<my domain>.duckdns.org, I get an error that it can't be reached.
BUT, if I go to https://<my domain>.duckdns.org:8123, it connects

you probably have forwarded 8123 to 8123, so the :8123 at the end is required
if you forward 443 to 8123 then you can drop the :8123

I'm getting started with HA, deploying with Docker on my RPi and I want to start adding the plugins/addons/custom components but I'm unclear on how to add all that stuff to the docker setup.
Do most people just build a custom image with whatever addons they want just copied into the image? and rebuild the image for each HA upgrade?
@rough dirge You're either using HA which has docker built in, and uses its own template for containers (addons), or you are running and managing docker yourself.

I need help..π© I am attempting to get Duckdns addon installed and I keep getting error no matter what I do.
so to summarize, if I'm deploying HA in a docker container, and I want to do addons, for example this Google Cal Component:

On your install you are probably going to use docker-compose, which isn't an orchestrator, but more like a config file

I have installed duckdns addon. I can connected with my ipad to the companion just fine but my iphone times out and will not connect. If I shut off wifi I can connect externally but on internal network it will not work. Any thoughts on what could be the issue? Thankyou.
@magic sparrow I am in a similar boat. Not sure if there is a way to config around that, but I've resorted to two types of connections: local and external. When local, I connect to https://[IP of HA device]:8123. Externally, I go to https://[my-domain].duckdns.org
I been searching the net for answers. What I do notice is that I get Notification "Login attempt or request with invalid authentication" in HA. I can connect with my local IP from my computer. By restoring your connections did if fix your issue? @latent marten

Check the Home Assistant URL you have set in the app...sounds like it is different in your ipad vs the iphone

Right, that sounds like the exact same behavior I have. It has something to do with being connected to same network.
You should be able to get around that. To test, make sure you are connected to wifi, and in your browser, enter https://[IP address of HA]:8123. For me, that connects. I expect it will for you, too.
for what ever reason it seems like my ipad is able to use the extenal address to still connect when using the app.
If i type my internal address https:192.168.xxx.xx:8123 in my iphone it brings up the HA login but when I enter my login information it says unable to connect to home assistant
Are you certain you have your username and password correct?
Then I get notification on my computer in HA with authetication. I have checked my login and password looks good. It works fine on my PC
and works fine when logging in externally

I actually got this aspect of things resolved last night. And I also had troubles with my username/password, but that's because I had the wrong info. I was able to reset it though, and I've been fine since.

Right now, when I'm on a device connected to my network, I cannot reach the duckdns url, but I can connect through the local IP (after clicking through the warning).
I'm not overly concerned about that, but am curious if it's an easy change or not

you can both use Nginx Proxy Manager as an alternative to secure your duckdns url. Then you get https:// with duckdns, and http:// with the local_ip
so now I need to point HA companion to that url and I will be back to square one before I installed duckdns

It can be handy if you have other servers. So you could have plex.yourduckdns.duckdns.org securing and forwarding to a different service and port, or sonarr, radarr, etc

Mories76 has made an add-on for this (https://github.com/mories76/ha-addon-frigate) but one of the issues i face is that i cant increase the shm-size, apparently it needs to be 512MB or 1G. In a docker run command Blake notes that the following should be included "--shm-size=512m" but i cant set this anywhere for the add on. could I make any necessary changes through the portainer add-on?
being new to this what is difficult is how quickly things have changed so I have to be careful what I am reading because the date on articles makes a huge difference.

Im trying to get the Nginx Proxy Manager addon to work. 443/80 forwarded to 443/80 on my homeassistant raspberry pi. When I configure Proxy Manager as shown in the animated gif (forwarding my domain name to http://ipaddress:8123), I get

ok..I think I need help..I tried setting up Andrews monitor.sh script and I'm failing big time..first I tried LXC container on Proxmox..well, doesn't seem to work, I passed USB to the container and I see it after calling lsusb, but hciconfig fails..then I tried Docker, but the images are either old or not working..lastly I tried setup the script on regular VM (that runs Docker for me) and I'm getting fatal mqtt error..argh..

Hi all. So I ditched the duckdns addon and went with wireguard vpn to access HA externally. Seems to work ok. I can't however browse the internet through my VPN with wireguard . I can only connect to HA via the companion or url.
Ok. As long as that only controls access and not functionality, I have no problem using the web ui.

You may have some issue where you can't reach the frontend, And the tools via the ssh addon are handy
is anyone using decently working presence detection? I tried monitor.sh, room assistant, bt and I get mixed results with them..and I don't want anything fancy like room detection or automations..just simple home/away π¦

There's the android/ios apps for HA, or gpslogger, life360, owntracks, your router may possibly have an existing integration, nmap, any of these
Life360 is pretty good on both android and iphone
Plus you can then set automation for when someone arrives at work, or school, etc

I tried nmap and for whatever reason I felt that while I had it on, my phone battery was draining noticeably faster

But with life360 you can add family members through the app and it's pretty handy. When we were trying it out my son was also learning to drive and there was "speeding" and "hard braking" info through the app, but those details eventually expire without using the paid version

but now for some reason it does not work that well

when I provide the same data in webbrowser at local home network I see that is loading, but after few seconds is result like timeout, I have duckdns and dnsmasq, I cannot change DNS on router, because this setting is blocked by provider, but from my point of view in dnsmask can be the same as in router instead of 8.8.8.8 like a lot of tutorials say
generally in browser I see that site is not trusted and I have to accept exception, maybe this is the reason why application cannot connect

Are you running deCONZ on port 80? The Hue app won't accept another port. For the Hue app to find the gateway, make sure UPnP is not disabled when starting deCONZ.

I'm using the Mosquitto mqtt broker add-on. My goal is to have at least 1 Nodemcu that can be triggered in Home Assistant to water a plant. The trigger could be manually or on set intervals (3 days or smth like that).
I'm wondering what the best approach would be to do this.
I would also want to see clearly when the last time was that my plants got watered
i want to send the command + the amount of seconds that my pump has to run, so it would be nice to show a graph as well with the amount of water my plants received
but I'm running before I'm able to crawl...
it's not really a sensor, because I want to send commands, it's not really a switch because it doens't have an on or off... it's more of an button/action
which apparantly isn't possible by using the configurations.yaml, but which must be done by using a "Device trigger" which only works with auto discovery
But i'm not sure if i'm looking at it the right way and I might be in over my head atm

It's a UI ludeeus maintains for all the custom integrations and other things out there. Makes it easier to find/manage/install these things, but isn't required

What used to be called Hassio was always an installation that made use of docker, but it has its own orchestrator called the "supervisor", which is a container that manages updates to other containers (addons) and HA itself, which also runs in a container

how to go to my files and folders through samba add-on? It wont me let pass, I entered in my run window \\192.168.51.1 it shows me a login winow screen, and when I entered username and password which I setup in my HA, it tells me that this ip address is not accessible
@sudden tartan are you using the user/pass you set up in the addon config?
You might check in the windows credential manager for an existing entry

Hi guys, could you help me with DuckDNS Add-On ? The problem which I have is I cannot connect to HA from local network. I did all necessary steps whic are in this video from JuanMTECH https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdiGdC7K4sI, connection from outside works fine, but from internal network corrupted, I checked router configuraion with my Internet provider and all looks fine. Do you have any ideas ?

anyone know if its possible to reach the config for https://github.com/home-assistant/hassio-addons/blob/master/ssh/README.md via the samba share? My user's password doesnt work any more, and the SSH server key file is not working either. The only access I have is the /config/ dir π edit: disregard, I deleted the auth and onboarding files.
does hass.io list the add-on names somewhere - it it not entirely clear to me how to calculate the name described here: https://developers.home-assistant.io/docs/hassio_addon_communication

I made a clone of the NUT addon - trying to use the most recent dev branch as my UPS is somewhere after the latest stable build
and in my testing I've encountered this now

hey guys! I'm having trouble setting up adguard. I've managed to setup a static ipv4 address for my hassio Nuc but I'm unsure as to where to set a static DNS server/s any help would be much appreciated!
Static IP on Hassio nuc I did with nmcli
I used that doc to setup the static ipv4 address. I think my problem is I don't know exactly what my dns address should be?
I can see ipv4.dns on nmcli
and I changed that to my router IP
without success
Entering the tcp listener loop on [::]:53 is what I just pulled from the Adguard log
it is not blocking adds poping up on speedtest.net website

that's because now you have to change YOUR machine's DNS server to point to your AdGuard instance π

@crimson bluff an external DNS is one like Google's (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or your ISP one
99% of the time it's probably best to use that, as it's gonna be more reliable than yours, and if you can't reach the Internet then adguard is useless for you anyway lol
@inner hare I went to my network card and changed my dns to my adguard server (192.168.11.250) reloaded, still have adds
you running Windows on your laptop?

ok so now maybe an issue with adguard, or you didn't set it up completely yet
let me triple check
so, the instance running HA, you probably do not want running through adguard as this may interfere with integrations or may be a hassle to deal with in general. So you have that instance using external dns servers like @inner hare says or 1.1.1.1 or 9.9.9.9 etc
And your router should be handing out your HA's ip address as the dns server to all clients on your network.
@inner hare It looks like everything is setup correctly except for the external DNS which I'm unsure of
and pretty obvious too come to think of it now lol
Your clients may need to disconnect and reconnect to the network in order to get the new dns server handed to them
Like on my windows machine, I usually just disable/enable the network adapter

yes, the one in particular is just called "adguard filtering"
but it should be on by default
and the dns in my router set to ip of adguard server
correct, but after it starts working
and be aware that if AdGuard ever goes down, your machines won't be able to resolve dns names π
