I stopped bothering with a detector when I got a ticket based on a laser that caused the detector to spring to life when it was already too late. That was in the mid-2000s
the only thing that it seemed to offer is an indication that you haven't been caught, but even that seemed hit-or-miss, depending on the detection method

Average speed cameras are becoming more common here, where you've basically got a number of cameras along a stretch and your picture is taken and timestamped at each, and then the system works out your average speed between cameras. Detectors don't help with those.

In the cooler parts of Aus this used to be the case. New builds are indoors now and a lot of older installations have retro-fitted insulated enclosures. Heat pump HW for the win. With a little automation to limit the heat exchanger inlet to outlet differential (for efficiency) and a Legionella pogrom once a week I'm down to about 1.8kWh per day for hot water. And that is done in the middle of the day when there's plenty of solar power. So essentially free hot water.

my grandfather had solar heat exchangers for a hot water tank. it was infact two tanks in the basement, one for actual usable hot water and the other was a specialized one for coolant. he even installed a blower fan that blew across the pipes that ran down the wall to help heat the living room. while the whole process seemed neat it was a nightmare to maintain
