Proxmox virtual environment, popularly known as Proxmox VE, is an open-source server virtualization software based on Debian Linux in conjunction with RHEL kernel, which is modified to permit you to generate and set up new virtual machines for private servers and containers with unified storage for improved efficiency.

There's lots of parties involved for distribution/sales/service channels for products like that

So while you see $4k,

It's likely the company only makes maybe $1k

But there's a lot of costs involved from taking something from a pitch meeting to a product in peoples homes

#

The isolated unit cost of manufacture is only a small portion

forest edge

not so much that something like that costs 3k

they probably put themselves in debt and the price tag is a desperate attempt to get above the water before they grow old

hushed basalt
#

That's generally not how things work

forest edge
#

lol

hushed basalt
#

Firstly they're trying to raise funding

#

From a utilitarian perspective it's terrible,

#

But that's not the job it's trying to serve

#

A utilitarian alternative would be a digital signage display

#

(plus they're not cheap either)

#

Plus there's also the application and infrastructure development costs

forest edge
#

lol monitor with an graphical display that clones it that also pipes out the flipping noise

#

all ran off an rpi

hushed basalt
#

Development costs could be $1m+ without breaking a sweat

#

For software only, not product

#

No one doubts you can make a DIY raspberry pi consumer tv put something on the screen

#

But for example, a cafe trying to attract business customers to come to their store vs the 6 next to them only has a few factors to leverage

#

Service, atmosphere, and coffee quality

#

If their $100k redecorating brings in 10% more people over 3 years while charging 10% more, it's a win

My Home Assistant in a country that I am not able to enter... For anyones interest

Since the "Operation" commenced my company evaced me out of Russia (Moscow), so now I am overseas for the last 2 months. Basically it has now been decided that I am not going back.
All of my things are still in the apartment and we have just learnt that it is not possible to get them shipped out, so they are going into storage.

But what is interesting, thanks to NabuCasa I am still monitoring everything in my apartment with Home Assistant, and so far I have been offloading my NAS to the cloud over the last 4 days (probably will need 2 weeks).
And yes I have been updating to the latest Beta releases haha

Anyway, just thought it might be interesting little story for some people 🙂

Nothing is more annoying having an electrician in the house doing work I could do myself. Just looking at money goes out the window. I installed 10 new plugs in the house

finite atlas
#

why did he do it then?

late gate
#

Cause of Norwegian laws require everything to be done by electrician. Its extremely strict

#

Kinda sucks for smart home. In the US I guess people can change switches etc to smart switches yourself, here they charge you $200 pr plug plus material

umbral cliff
#

That’s more expensive than australia lmao

simple solution to it, dont sell or blame it on others

yeah, sucks to be handicapped and not being able to do stuff yourself

umbral cliff

Glad that’s not a thing here

finite atlas
#

All they really care here, is that the electricity meter works as it should

#

the rest is up to us

umbral cliff
#

Like here yes you need an electrician legally, and if they wanted to they could inspect, and finding stuff they could ask for proof. But most minor stuff doesn’t have an electrical safety document with it, and there’s no requirement on sale

#

So you could do it yourself, you risk voiding home insurance though if they find out

umbral cliff
late gate
#

Im so jealous on the americans that can do most themself, though their electric system is 30 years outdated vs europe

finite atlas
#

i'm in germany

#

we've done pretty much everything ourself
except the gas line to the heater & the electricity line from the street to our house and electricity meter

#

both of which are totally fair not to be done by average people

umbral cliff
#

Yeah I guess mains into the house should also be restricted

late gate
#

we dont have gas lines here (a very, very few have), but in general no gas here

finite atlas
#

all the wires & plumbing has been done by us
the only issue is, we've underestimated how much electricity we need in our garden, so the line and fuse are a bit underrated and it goes out a few times a year

late gate
#

plumbing is not legal to do yourself too

finite atlas
#

ouch

late gate
#

my brother built a bathroom, and had to tear it down cause the inspector didnt want to approve it, even if it was to code

finite atlas
#

;-;

late gate
#

In my view you should be able to do everything yourself, and get it inspected and approved

finite atlas
#

What if you'd just move to the woods without electricity and water?

late gate
#

I bet its some regulations for that too lol

finite atlas
#

ouch

late gate
#

you are not allowed to mount solar panels yourself so maybe thats the catch lol

finite atlas
#

well, just dont mount them then

#

just lay them loose on the roof

late gate
#

Haha, yeah

#

The baseline of what you can touch is 50V, so POE almost is not allowed to do yourself lol

#

I would not be suprised if POE would be regulated too

finite atlas
#

so a 48v battery system is allowed to have, nice

#

most consumer electronics runs on lower voltage anyway

late gate
#

yeah, but you can only touch 12/48V up to some amps so high amp 12v is not allowed eather

#

In norway just assume its not legal

finite atlas
#

ouch

#

i start to dislike norway more and more

late gate
#

Add 40-50% tax on income and you will love it 😉

#

I paid 40K USD in tax last year

finite atlas
#

well, with a salery tripple as high as the average european, i'm totally cool with it

late gate

salary tripple, but prices are also trippled

finite atlas
#

income tax in germany is also pretty much 40-50%

late gate
#

auch

finite atlas
#

when you count in all expenses that you must pay and cant avoid at all

late gate
#

yeah. all in all I guess its ok enough if you get something for it

#

But for smart home hobbiest I just would love to have more freedom to make my house proper smart

finite atlas
#

how exactly is it hindering you?

late gate
#

too expensive. If I would do everything I wanted it would cost at least 50k USD

finite atlas
#

and more detailed?

late gate
#

change switches, more power (this house is from a time where it was not the power drag as today so underdimensioned), integrated smart plugs, smart dimmers etc

finite atlas
#

find your ways around it
use light bulbs with remote switches and all the fancy functions you need
use those smart plugs, that you plug into the wall outlet

umbral cliff
#

How is your house underpowered? You should be able to just up the fuse on the main switchboard? Though a 50a fuse should be fine

umbral cliff
finite atlas
#

too thin wires

umbral cliff
late gate
#

@umbral cliff about 90k

finite atlas
late gate
#

This house have 1,5mm2 wires and 10amps, when I should have 2,5mm2 and 16 aps and ground

#

that would be the best

#

my office got ONE outlet

#

ONE!

umbral cliff
#

Surely you can add another outlet to that room then

late gate
#

yeah of course, but not myself

finite atlas
#

i pretty much always use those multiple outlet thingies

umbral cliff
#

But that’s worse than australia. Parents have a 50+ year old house, has 2.5mm wiring

#

No thought about whether something can go there or not. There’s room

umbral cliff
finite atlas
umbral cliff
#

Yeah a power board

late gate
#

I use them everywhere

finite atlas
#

just an example image

#

i have an 8 port one under my table for all my pc stuff

late gate
#

Just getting quality ones

umbral cliff
#

They’re very easy to use. And nicer than like 10 points in the wall

late gate
#

If you build a house now you need 6 points behind tv etc

#

and plugs in every corner

finite atlas
#

electrically, thats the right thing to do ^

#

those power boards are not really a great solution

umbral cliff
#

I’ve got 2 5 port ones and a 12 port one running off two separate sockets. Given the low power draw it’s fine

#

They work fine, they have overload protection built in, and otherwise are just solid metal linking it all

finite atlas
#

We wired everything with 2,5mm² wires except the lamps, they are wired with 1,5

late gate
#

yeah jut dont go to IKEA and buy power strips

umbral cliff
#

Why not? They’re still meeting electrical standards

late gate
#

I want to rewire the whole house

#

IKEA use 0.75 or something

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
late gate
#

I use APC power strips with power surge protection. Quality

finite atlas
umbral cliff
finite atlas
#

yup

umbral cliff
#

And in areas where they’re not needed all the time, useless too (eg bedroom because that’s where my computer lives atm)

finite atlas
#

but 2 points each corner should be fine and once per room 6 ports or so for computers

#

but not my problem, i'll stick to my power boards

#

cheaper & easier to do

late gate
#

If I built a house I would go crazy with plugs etc. I probably would even concider KNX

finite atlas
#

knx?

late gate
#

Very established smart home over cable

#

integrates in HA

finite atlas
#

ooh

umbral cliff
#

Honestly I wouldn’t want to integrate stuff in except for either fibre or Ethernet

finite atlas
#

i'm not that deep in the smart home eco system

umbral cliff
#

Even 1 gig Ethernet will still be a home standard for the next decade at least

late gate
#

Of all things I have ethernet to all rooms except my office

umbral cliff
#

Though by then I feel 10 gig will be more usable

late gate
#

The office Im planning to get cable too

#

just a bit finicky

finite atlas
#

1 gig local yes, but residential connections will likely stay under it for many many years

late gate
#

I have a 10gbit backhaul

umbral cliff
#

I would still probably wire fibre up for where network comes in -> network closet area -> study

late gate
#

fibre

umbral cliff
#

And in a decade they’ll be the mainstream

finite atlas
#

how long is a decade, 100 years?

late gate
#

I prefer to work on cable. I DO feel the difference on wifi vs cable

finite atlas
#

by then, yeah maybe for 80% of people its viable

late gate
#

I have 1gig up and down internet connection

finite atlas
#

we have 50/10

umbral cliff
#

In a lot of Asian countries 1 gig is the slow service

#

(Eg Singapore)

finite atlas
#

max we can have is 175/40 for 50€ a month

umbral cliff
#

And 5-10 gig is their premium service

#

Sounds like Germany is just being Germany lol

finite atlas
#

yes

#

vdsl all the way

umbral cliff
#

At least australia is trying to fix the mess of the nbn by upgrading homes

finite atlas
#

with hyper deluxe super master vectoring

late gate
#

Here its not enough competition. We have fibre in the house so can terminate fibre directly in the switch

#

so the potential for higher speed is there

#

most newer routers come with 2,5gbit WAN now

umbral cliff
#

I can’t see myself needing more than a gig symmetric for years

late gate
#

I run unifi so have a bit more

umbral cliff
#

Especially when 100/40 works perfectly fine

late gate
#

I cant imagine going back to 100 lol

#

dont thing they even sell it anymore

#

least is 300/300

finite atlas
#

i'd be more than happy with a proper 100/40 connection for a fair price
but all ISP's sucks in germany and ship shitty routers with high bufferbloat and have fun diying any solution without getting insane

umbral cliff
#

250 is nice, just don’t need it so don’t need to pay for it

umbral cliff
#

That’s worse than australia

#

Wow

finite atlas
#

well you can, after jumping through a lot of problems with telekom
if you use another, its easier but those have way way way shittier customer service as they wont face legal issues like telekom

umbral cliff
#

If you use your own router here, depending on the ISP the only thing you lose is access to the voip based landline (otherwise it’s exactly the same)

#

Probably the only best part of nbn is it’s removed the isp difference, now pricing is set by nbn & they all use that main connection. They compete on other areas but all let you byo

late gate
#

Most people here have moved away from VOIP

#

and landlines general

umbral cliff
#

Im still a fan of landlines but that’s just me lol

finite atlas
#

The way i fixed bufferbloat, is by using an OpenWRT router behind the ISP router and installed SQM QoS onto it, i have ~7% less bandwith but no 300ms+ lag spikes

#

and i've also lost all ipv6 support by using a router behind the isp's

umbral cliff
#

At least ipv6 isn’t super needed as of yet

late gate
#

5G is being more integrated now so landlines are obsolete

umbral cliff
#

But so bad you can’t just put your own router in place and use it

finite atlas
#

yep, but i'd like to use it

late gate
#

We finally got native IPV6 on our fibre

#

this year

#

before that they had a hybrid 6RD

finite atlas
#

we still have hybrid ipv6 support only..

finite atlas
#

yeah i know

forest edge

but the name comes from the length being like 6ft+

finite atlas
