is that the brand that shuted off ?
i heard a thing about one recentely
didn't look deeper
Imploded more than anything else
Shut everything down, and walked away
oh, that's classical :D
I have just intrested in "Auto-home", so 🍞
Is anyone here?
would you look at that, an integration :D
with a big warning
how fun to see Hass is once again the solution
awww :( i'm sorry you follow religious date and don't endors capitalistic holidays :P
I'm in favour of all holidays, particularly if they mean I don't have to work
I dont like coffee
tea ?
Vine
Im the 1% who loose weight by coke lol
as long as your internal organ don't liquefy, your good !
As long as coke doesn't mean cocaine , it's ok
yeah no cocaine lol
Just ask your nose 😛
which one ?
You loosing weight, but also teeth
oh wait :)
Even raccoon.sh ?

Who says that? Their own images hardly show a trace of debian and if you install it on top the installer even replaces the kernel.
s/present tense/half a decade ago/
Proxmox virtual environment, popularly known as Proxmox VE, is an open-source server virtualization software based on Debian Linux in conjunction with RHEL kernel, which is modified to permit you to generate and set up new virtual machines for private servers and containers with unified storage for improved efficiency.
I assumed it actually used the Debian kernel
I might be outdated
So it is an abomination now then
Ooof 8.5% inflation in the us and still rising
same here in germany
Is it that high? You were at 6 last i checked
UK is at 7%
Oooof
We are only at 4.5 which 2+ of that is related to petrol and power prices
Also
Excuse me wtf
is that nature trying to fight it's way in through that window?
officially 7,3%
but since the EZB printed 30% money out of nowhere, one can only guess where this jurney is going
you aint even have money issues
anyone remember the name of the really expensive board you can put on your wall where you can set the text on it and it will flip through the letters to the right ones?
found it: https://www.vestaboard.com/
price of those things is absolutely insane
Anyone have an off the self smart lock that works with esphome or home-assistant(Z-wave or Zigbee) where home-assistant validates codes inputted on the keypad?
Except for the fact you need to use an app to pair the velops together, which requires a login from memory
yeah - I kinda get it, they probably aren't selling a ton and there are a lot of moving pieces in there, but woof
The cost of mechanical complexity
please, it's old tech in a new wrapper
we had a flip clock like that many years ago and I can see the allure of an addressable modern version
Age of the tech has little to do with it
If anything the age makes it more expensive
Those flipboard signs in airports etc would have been incredibly incredibly expensive
they make for good sound effects
Haha old external wall. House was extended before it was finished, so it was a window to the outside, that now looks through to the garage. Going to block it off when I have time!
those were commercially targeted products, this is residential. I also bet if there was a way to compare price size for size etc those flip boards back then wouldn't have costs as much
I doubt it
Commercial/industrial gear is always orders of magnitude more expensive than residential
I agree, which is why this flip boards price is insane lol
3k+ for something you hang in your kitchen that isn't cooling or heating your food
It could give you the next step in the recipe
so could a pen and paper
People spend lots of money on designer pieces all the time
Trump people.. sure
There's lots of parties involved for distribution/sales/service channels for products like that
So while you see $4k,
It's likely the company only makes maybe $1k
well i'm waiting for the chinese company to come clone it and sell it for a fraction of the cost and ultimatly put the original company out of buisness
it's happened to segway
Yes that can definitely happen
It does seem particularly vulnerable to breakage
But the company is obviously targetting upscale clients
Who generally don't buy direct chinese brands
please, anything you open has a made in china sticker
Which means lower volumes, which means more overheads per sale which means higher price
There's a difference between made in china and a chinese retail company
Their target market doesn't buy Roborock and Xiaomi
yea cause maids have no use for them
Billion dollar companies don't keep their manufacturing domestic out of patriotism or supporting jobs
They do it for niche markets
Where the MadeInTheUSA is a sales differentiator
i call fake, those people standing by that car are not running away in panic
does made in usa cost more in au?
I'm keeping it USA perspective for ease of conversation
Obviously the Australian equivalent is Made In Australia
But almost nothing that can fit in a shipping container is made in Australia
well that company can do whatever it wants but they doomed themselves to stumped growth
only so many rich people who would find a use for that product lol
But there's a lot of costs involved from taking something from a pitch meeting to a product in peoples homes
The isolated unit cost of manufacture is only a small portion
not so much that something like that costs 3k
they probably put themselves in debt and the price tag is a desperate attempt to get above the water before they grow old
That's generally not how things work
lol
Firstly they're trying to raise funding
From a utilitarian perspective it's terrible,
But that's not the job it's trying to serve
A utilitarian alternative would be a digital signage display
(plus they're not cheap either)
Plus there's also the application and infrastructure development costs
lol monitor with an graphical display that clones it that also pipes out the flipping noise
all ran off an rpi
Development costs could be $1m+ without breaking a sweat
For software only, not product
No one doubts you can make a DIY raspberry pi consumer tv put something on the screen
But for example, a cafe trying to attract business customers to come to their store vs the 6 next to them only has a few factors to leverage
Service, atmosphere, and coffee quality
If their $100k redecorating brings in 10% more people over 3 years while charging 10% more, it's a win
3k is within the realm for commercial. not saying it's not
it's the residential pitch that i find comical
Yeah like I said they're not targeting middle class
🍞 Good morning
They're targetting people who spend $10k a year on clothes, $40k holiday trips,
Tbh $10k is probably low
Is it a dumb product, absolutely
Is it a gross waste of money, absolutely
Are they making a huge profit on every sale, probably not
Will it be a successful business, maybe, maybe not I dunno
Aye, you are right, don't have that app anymore though
All the people I hate, great
Useless app too, put the router into bridge mode and the app just breaks. Only thing it’s useful for is being able to get the current public IP if anything breaks for ddns
Never had use for it
In bridge mode all features are of anyway
But meshing still works
Go fuck yourself is the correct answer 100% of the time
replacing that worn down metric you say? i agree!
All scandibros do
i don't get it
Haha

The infamous scene from The Moomins (Tanoshii Moomin Ikka / Muumilaakson tarinoita) 1990, Episode 6, where the Moomin family confronts the Groke, with the Finnish dub and English subtitles.
The English dub left the Groke's groans out completely, and every other dub has it's own version of her voice. The Finnish one especially is well known for ...
so all finnish people are afraid of a large duck with a cold butt?
can't imagine what it's like to be afraid of an animated plush toy

hi where should i ask for a help with my ha? Today after udate im unable to acces my ha even unable to acces proxmox! what could go wrong
probably a proxmox issue then. But on here, sounds like a #330990055533576204 installation
In general, #general-archived is the dispatching channel 🙂
Sigh, #449717345808547842 ; miss that channel. Like the deserts miss the rains
Yeah, gives me vertigo
Although I suppose people not showing the flag for container in #installation-archived reduces new recruitment, casting shadow on the installation method in the user stats, possibly paving way for the dessurection of the method, thus dooming us all to run #330990055533576204
We truly live in the darkest timeline
Also, Container underpins HAOS, just as Core underpins Container

Wow. A windows program that respects my time.
Thanks, Chocolatey. Just for that I'll reboot right away.
That must be a virus
It's experiencing shame for its broken update mechanism
First time I use it. It must be really hard to handle updates in any reliable way under windows, though..
It's easy
Run a dark site
yes I manage windows update in dark sites
yes it is a pita
I enable analytics like a good maze-rat.
The cheese at the end of the HA-maze has thus far been satisfactory
(big) brother won't you spare a dime
You got me staring at the analytics data. This curve shape is fascinating and keeps repeating for every major release
It's so very clear with the distiction between early adopters, those waiting for .1 or .2 and those waiting one or two monthlies.
2021.12 saw an interesting spike
Yeah. Could be state of the smart home.
.3 is minimum for me
That could be the slight upwards curve at the end of the total installs graph, actually...
Or maybe that's just because of the current four day weekend.
To be honest the 2022.4 curve looks much like the 2022.3 curve
I'm in a build-your-own robotic lawn mower group on facebook, and the first sunny day each year always brings a couple of thousand new members.
V8 powered robotic lawn mowers?
Better yet. Powered by a disassembled Jula screwdriver.
Don't bring Murica into this
Has everyone seen those people who raced motorised bar stools?
Kinda similar thought process with the V8 mowers
Any sort of DIY project that involves a sharp spinning blade that moves around on its own seems like a recipe for toe separation or similar tragedy
It's dead now, sadly.
I was doing debugging of the arduino controller and left the lid open that one day it rained in 2018.
This is why we love Home Assistant
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/04/shameful-insteon-looks-dead-just-like-its-users-smart-homes/
oof, "we're keeping the lights on"
in the long run it's actually good these companies do this shit now. eventually enough people will be more selective and thus forcing companies to have to release products that can stand on their own much like how shelly are
That assumes the average consumer has enough foresight to care
It's so ridiculous because Insteon itself is all local control
The hub is an unnecessary risk and cloud tie in
if something becomes well known long enough it's not so much the matter of caring, it's just turns into common knowledge.
Raccoonzilla
You mean a money making exercise

Ah hahahahahahahahahaha I’m about to hear shit from a professor about this one classroom
that always feels so good
we do everything better in this part of the world....
Ever wondered what would happen if you put two V8 champions in an office to race on motorised eskies? Well watch this video and find out!!
That's really bad.
My Home Assistant in a country that I am not able to enter... For anyones interest
Since the "Operation" commenced my company evaced me out of Russia (Moscow), so now I am overseas for the last 2 months. Basically it has now been decided that I am not going back.
All of my things are still in the apartment and we have just learnt that it is not possible to get them shipped out, so they are going into storage.
But what is interesting, thanks to NabuCasa I am still monitoring everything in my apartment with Home Assistant, and so far I have been offloading my NAS to the cloud over the last 4 days (probably will need 2 weeks).
And yes I have been updating to the latest Beta releases haha
Anyway, just thought it might be interesting little story for some people 🙂
i hope you dont have anything too important thats physically stuck in moscow
hm, my desk control unit has a rj45 socket
should I try to figure out if it's a text based protocol? 🙂
There is even a BT module for the open socket, that would allow app control. I hope someone already played with it 🙂
You love it
You can send it emails, telling it what height it should be at, and such
A couple of things, but we had started moving some important stuff in Dec knowing we were leaving... Just didn't know it would happen this way
Nice, a new toy arrived
So.. Moral question for you all.. If you could fully automate turning on your water irrigation system when this occurs. would you?
Or having kids
lol.. don't think there's a Kid box for Frigate 🙂
Water irrigation systems what an American concept
but yes I would
how tiny of milliwatts does it output?
2 * 125W at 8 Ohm, quite a beast
sweet
Look at this huge ring transformator
Its 150mm wide and something like 80mm high. Not even my crown pa amplifier with 2*400W @ 4Ohm had one this big
Does not look defect
njet
one thing, i dont know why, it doesnt even matter how hard to try
if you know they are not picking up the poop afterwards then for sure.
Definately not. But absolutely would go and shout at the owner next time I saw them
Actually, why not turn on the irrigation system. They deserve it
even racoons don't mind a little water
t’s not DNS
There’s no way it’s DNS
It was DNS
Kubernetes let’s gooo now that we have valid certs

nothing wrong with old star trek, old shows had to made due with what little they could but this current shit has no excuse
the current shit sucks

Can he swing from a web?
It’s 4/20 and not a single question about how to automate grow lights today.
Very disappointing
Expecting an uproar from all the stranded sober Insteon folks?
Those of you who use Kubernetes, what load balancer are you using? The one built into k3s…. Is not exposing the ips correctly to traefik
I already replaced the storage system…
Cute friend
People use kubernetes??!!
Um yes?
When I tried it I didn't go any futher than using the built in one, but I didn't do much with it
I'm about to migrate a bunch of stuff to Kube pods
I’m in the process of doing that now
I don't know what I'm doing yet 🙂
I have a basic idea at this point
I got scrypted running inside kube, home assistant is next
This may help
I have k3s with default storage disabled (I’m using longhorn instead)
Next up is fixing the real ip issue with traefik which may require me to replace the load balancer
Cert-manager handles my certs
Spinning up HA should be a copy and edit of my scrypted config
I can’t remember who offered to help, but I have 0 clue how to set up sonarr/ lidarr/ etc and could do with help
Yes I know how to run them. I don’t know how to set it up
I have them all sitting idle doing fuck all
All containerised of course
(I actually did use your GitHub to set it up lol)
Well
You need some indexers
And you need some downloaders
Jackett searches torrent sites, qbittorrent downloads torrents
See that part is where I get lost
That said, 99% of stuff is better off from Usenet
Then you need to have some Usenet indexers, and for example nzbget to fetch
I’m very lost
gain
Then send the things they find to a downloader
Oops. Search bar element lost focus...
I knew it Thomas is searching for how to gain all the Linux isos
Or i have nothing left to gain
I've tried ELI5, do i need to ELI3?
I do understand the basics behind what it should be doing, but how does it get indexers. I swear when I’ve tried it just errors badly
Well
You need to subscribe to newsgroups
For monthly or yearly fees
Then use your API key
Or for jackett, you just need to add it to *arr as an indexer

Yeah this is just further cementing that I know nothing and almost shouldn’t bother lol
You should just subscribe to my plex then

All the Linux iso videos you can ever need
Sorry, no Home And Away
Nah I’ll do it the old fashioned way. Hunt a show, then download it
Just find someone streaming it on youtube.
I will change. I just need easy baby steps lol and recommendations of what to use
I will send you some links
just have atx share his plex and make him install ombi so you can just use his shit to fetch whatever it is you want to watch lol
could someone identify this connector?
metallic and round
Lol I was just talking about usenet to other people
Usenet is basically pre world wide web reddit
Used to be great as a couplo my former ISPs had their own nntp servers so it totally maxed out my bandwidth
Suspicious basil plant spotted with Frigate 😂
your thoughts?

I touch my home assistant setup once every 3-5 weeks perhaps
Last time it crashed was in 2018
Not sure this is a problem
Also I can edit it from anywhere in the world if i so see fit, even on Transatlantic flights
But what if you're no longer around for example... your wife comes home and the lights won't work
for me she would need to hire an electrician to remove all the devices ive installed
We have had that problem too
I'm currently maintaining the system of a dead friend
And have fixed it when it stopped last
so the solution would be a friend that also knows something about home assistant
I have had to fix it one time so far, and he's been gone for 1.5 years
So, it isn't a big issue, it just keeps working
yeah its pretty solid indeed
Sorry to hear about your friend even if it has been a year and a half
Your switches don't work when HA is down/ aren't just screw in bulbs?
I should probably upgrade the HA ecosystem at some point
Last time it was upgraded was October 2020
But also last time HA went down was a reboot of the server hosting it, that is longer than a instant reboot for a change in config
Correct. Automation is written based on a deconz_event. So the switch pressing is processed by HA
I don't use physical switches anymore, all lights are always powered, bulbs turned on or off based on events
Thats not great, at least here the bulbs will all follow mains power on/off if HA dies. Or work with zigbee groups. Or are just smart switches (shelly)
I have only one smart powered wall switch, and it will probably get removed
Because it doesn't behave properly in ZigBee group
(Also yes I know toggling smart devices on mains isn't good, but if its between that or no power, it works well enough)
i could use traditional switches but that would make me unable to switch them on by automation when they are turned off
This is why I only use smart bulbs
i'm using the hue lights mainly which require energy all the time to work
yeah me two but if you use a switch a cut the power that smart switch won't be reachable
I've got all smart bulbs, and only one smart switch (for outside lights I don't wanna smartify)
Even my guests never touch the switches, they know the house conforms to them
I put 14 ikea tradfri bulbs outside @umbral cliff great range
25m from wall

Motion sensors?
What do you mean by adjusted? Like daylight method?
Brightness and colour temperature
Between 08-22
Based on outdoor light levels
Yeah I use that adaptive lighting already
its cool
Wish I actually had a light sensor for outside
Still trying to hunt ali
Yeah, strange the one I use is gone
It works great
All the Norwegian shops have it in stock
If it is for a TV antenna it could be a Belling-Lee socket.
it is
Damnit
Im thinking of this one in the end
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
a solar panel and will do the job
Its the only one I can find though
If you can wait until next month I'm going to write up a DIY lux sensor project. Just waiting on a slow boat of parts from China.
Hmm that would require it to be plugged into the wall though right?
Yep
Oooh it might be available on kogan lol https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/xiaomi-mi-light-detection-sensor-white-09346112012762/
Bit more $ than ali, but might actually be in stock and in australia
that looks like a direct rip off of ombi lol
The Open Mower project allows you to build your own smart lawn mower robot using the Raspberry Pi and an Arduino. The robot is able to localize itself using very precise RTK GPS. As base for this project, an off-the-shelf robot mower is used. The electric components and the software are published as an open source project.
This robot lawn mower...
the idea of buying a robotic mower just to gut it goes against my nature
but would be sweet to dump this on a diy gas push mower with eletric motors
Buy a real mower
or a 🐐
True
My friend had one of those, it ended up strangling itself attempting to walk away from the pole it was leashed to
With V8 ?
You are thinking of riding mowers.. those people put V8's in
The way to be self-reliance on energy.
Hey all.. Already a user of HA for some time, but finally found my way to here! 😄
Anyone using unraid? How friendly is it for a complete n00b like myself?
Thinking of turning my old PC i7-5820k + 980Ti into a NAS for HA, Plex, (Rendering using a VM?), security camera footage, etc
Unraid is forgiving
You don't need a high end GPU though unless you plan to do a ton of transcoding
Unraid also supports mixing drive sizes, which.... Has pros and cons
hmm not sure if it would be used for transcoding or not, I have some 4K UHD footage but I just presumed the Plex client on a nvidia shield played that without it needing to be transcoded.
I will do some research on the drive sizes - cheers for that
It's more forgiving than truenas as you don't need the same drive size, but you don't have memory enhanced performance of zfs, and unraid runs docker instead of the lxc nonsense of proxmox
So all things have pros and cons
I just opted for pure Debian, with zfs, and will probably run mergerfs+snapraid too for media volumes
And docker and kvm natively
That's all over my head I'm afraid but I'll do some googling and research on that 😅
don't worry, atx is a nerd
Guys, my tv is a bit obsolete, i lost support for Hbo Max, and I'm thinking about some tv stick or something. But: isn't better idea run Kodi on Rpi for same price ? Can I run HA and Kodi on same machine without any trouble?
Running anything on raspy isn’t going to be without trouble
Apple TV has been good for me
Shit just works
Supports all tv stuff and hdmicec just plays nice with my avr
Anyone tried Amazon Fire tv stick?
Mostly cons
me
get at least the 4k version as you can feel the speed difference between it and the lower spec ones, but i'd go for an apple tv nowdays
I'll repeat my plug for the nVidia Shield TV, which in my humble opinion is a more capable and more automatable option
it even has an AppleTV+ app, if that's your thing
I still have only seen one Nvidia shield in stores in Norway
And never heard of anyone who has one
Appears to be a very Murica thing
+1 on the Shield TV
Shield is okay but overkill for most I think
you could get a lesser device, but it's comparable in price to the AppleTV and runs pretty much everything you'll ever want
you forgot incredibly more expensive as well
the nvidia tube is a pos
don't even mention it.... ever
perhaps when compared with a Fire TV stick
why? I have the 2017 version (pre-tube) and it's been mostly great. It has its issues at times but better than any other android STB I've used (I refuse to get an apple tv)
I prefer using an apple tv to the chromecast with android tv personally. The remote makes more sense with apple (like wow a play/pause button) and apps just seem to load faster & run faster
I have a (likely dead soon) Caavo box and that has filled the gap for all remote needs
the shield remote was definitely annoying at times
the tube was super gimped to bring the price down. while it may handle some things ok, it's so gimped that I have done nothing but read bad things about it
with an android device that's bad cause the apps are too much for the device
wans't that the one that had the AI upscaling? I thought I read somewhere that people were super excited about that
they all had that. probably was an improvement for the tube
I would just spend the extra 50 bucks to get the pro, but then on that note I wouldn't buy a shield to begin with.. there are cheaper alternatives that run android but with way better specs
examples?
everything I've read says that most android STBs have problems but I haven't actually tested that myself
problems?
as for examples. there's tons of of them on the market, like those mi boxes and i think there is one called Bee or something
i think the mi box is the same stats as the tube but for like 1/3rd the price
What kind of backwards shit-hole is Norway?!
They are everywhere in Sweden, including in my TV stand
Actually, more like a speaker stand, because the TV is on the wall, but you get the idea
I don't think I've seen a single one anywhere here
which is clearly a sign of an enlightened area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYWzMvlj2RQ
man, that is old by now
We are a progressive nation of sensible idiots who enjoy consuming bananas orally I'll have you know
you know we all read that as "anally" right
I wish streaming was a thing in my youth. would have been nice to have something pay me for having a gaming addition lol
The Apple TV remote is a POS although using the remote on another Apple devices is a win.
I actually like the Apple TV remote lol. Both the new style and the older glass style one
Uhm, speak for yourself freak.
Have you ever tried to do a single thing with the pad on the top of the remote. Useless.
My wife fights with the remote. I just pickup my phone.
We too only use the Apple Remote
In both living rooms and bedroom
Controls avr and atv
All I need
Controlling your all terrain vehicle with an apple remote is something I would love to see
Yes and got quite good at it. Found easier to do fine navigation by tapping on the edges of the touch panel than swiping
While I rage quitted Apple products a few years back, I'm back on a Macbook now and I would murder innocents for the battery performance of this machine.
Good thing I don't have to, as they are readily available in shops
What battery performance is that?
My Chromebook gives me 13h
The Zbook is supposedly 14h I think
I'll see your 13h and raise to 18h
Oh Shoiiiit
And all I had to sacrifice was more moneyz plus the off-chance that I might have to serve as a component part to a Human-CentiPad at some point in the future
but that's a future me problem
Nothing to do with present me
I like that I charge this thing like tops twice a week
unheard of since the Nokia phones of yore
I leave mine in the charger 95% of the time, home office life
Only unplug it when I bring it downstairs

My life is mostly decay in the sofa, so our use-cases are different
Does homeassistant have a prometheus endpoint
no earthly idea what that is but there is an #integrations-archived for it at https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/prometheus/
I once had a Prometheus endpoint, very painful, surgery took care of it.
never heard of a giant hemorrhoid being referred to as Prometheus before but ok

Is anyone good at photoshop? I'm just looking something very small done. I want the black dot removed in the top left as I'm planning on getting it blown up and I think it's a bird of a helicopter and I think it might look stupid when it's blown up
Sure I can do that. DM me a link to the file.
Or do it yourself with either content aware fill or if it is a black dot on a plain background use the spot healing brush tool.
next they'll be opening doors...
This time you were faster
Been awhile since you posted a picture of your kid

dude, hastebin is legit
BBQ buddy, just about every type of BBQ you can imagine lol
getting anecdotal here so I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered that people had problems with the mii box when it first came out
maybe it's gotten better
I also thought the processor was not as good
I think it's on it's 3rd or 4th iteration so.. but the point is. the nvidia shield is overpriced because you are paying for the name. Sure the bigger company will take better care of support for thier products etc but that's like choosing a dell over a custom built pc
The difference being that you're completely reliant on nVidia or another manufacturer for these STBs, vs. often being able to maintain/upgrade PCs yourself
having said that, the Xiaomi Mi Box S looks like a good alternative for $65
if they ever figure out how to get hwaccell under android on an rpi those companies will be in trouble lol
I used to run Kodi on a RPi3b+ and it was pretty good for what I needed at the time. But with 4K, Dolby Vision, Atmos, and all the streaming apps, etc, you really need dedicated hardware now
as if my peripherals supported any of that 😂
RPI4 can handle 4k etc just fine. it's the games on android it chokes with without hwacell but videos play just fine
Just BBQ 🤔
you could eat dirt if you really wanted too...
got access to some cow patties if you wanna give that a go
i know how you like that organic stuff

Google Home Assistant SDK with Volumio OS music player/server hosted on Raspberry Pi 4 Model B
multilingual machine
It’s just running in the background as I shut off my main laptop; no need for “hey or ok Google prompts” but just any random questions
I accidentally told it to give me the locations of all the motel 6s in my area and just like a usual assistant it did xd
That music is so deliciously horrible

so, again. WiFi is good enough for most HA applications according to HA integration statistics
Wifi can be stable to, so don't know why it's an issue... cable is more stable.
Please take this to a thread
(if proper hardware is used, same applies to ethernet switches/routers)
Agree
Threads are awesome for this kind of "discussion"
good morning atx o/
Mörning
I got a lot of babies now. Luckily no diapers :p
yum, diy turtle soup
oh you didnt
Here we ONLY eat Racoons
only if their insides are turtle soup
So much raccoon to wash, omg
You monster
I didnt start it
You did. You ate raccoon
Where else would anyone be??
These things are so good
I can't believe I've gone so long using the crappy standard style shifting spanner
As in these crappy things
That's a strange looking hammer
But the truth is, the life isnt like that
spanner is such a weird name
For a crescent wrench….yes…for once I agree with you Sonoma 🤣
It was worth the war to get away from that British English nonsense 🙂
yea don't think I could handle brunch and calling cookies biscuits etc
american english pretty much sets the standards anymore.. everything else is just caveman paintings
And often a holdover from imperialism in days gone by, like in India
Throw off the yoke of oppression, brothers, and drive on the right side of the road!
I'll choose English (United Kingdom) locale for my systems thank you
You have choose chicken scratch
I see English is not your first language

we really don't want to hear your "pillow" talk to your wife before sexy time
How are they better than the other one?
they are not
i will say quality makes a worlds of difference with how easy they are to adjust. course proper care also goes a long way
You call it sexy time?
To be honest, a standard crescent wrench is about as useless as tits on a boar
completely disagree
several times you need a wrench but don't have a set of standard wrenches or even have room for them
Any socket wrench these days will fit in tight spaces much better than a crescent wrench. I haven’t used a crescent wrench since the late 90s
plumbers always use them. don't see them used in automotive too much but it's always a tool to keep on hand
socket wrench can't turn nuts on steering arms etc
or do you mean wrench? cause to me a socket wrench is those ratchet closed ends they came out with like 15 years ago
Me 5 hours ago: LOL! Who would spend 5 hours customizing a Lovelace dashboard?
Me now: finally, customized at last
You mean these?
Because they’re definitely used in automotive
wasn't sure he meant. I thought maybe he was referring to these http://mobileimages.lowes.com/productimages/0f8fe8de-4f93-41bc-8efc-606a68d89e15/09225552.jpg
and never said they weren't used in automative. I said you don't see many crecent wrenches (spanners) used in automotive
Ah sorry I misunderstood. Thought you meant socket. But yeah they’re used still just as a support for getting bolts out
Way thinner jaws, smaller head to jaw width ratio
And longer jaws
Can get into more places with less effort
Only downside is theres less metal so it needs to be higher quality, and more machining
So not good things when youre a conglomerate flogging off potato grade cast iron tools to unsuspecting Australians with fat margins
Lol which brand are you talking about there
I haven’t bought any tools that are from those brands before. Only Bunnings (ozito), and Bosch recently (and wera for screwdriver)
Nothing is more annoying having an electrician in the house doing work I could do myself. Just looking at money goes out the window. I installed 10 new plugs in the house
why did he do it then?
Cause of Norwegian laws require everything to be done by electrician. Its extremely strict
Kinda sucks for smart home. In the US I guess people can change switches etc to smart switches yourself, here they charge you $200 pr plug plus material
That’s more expensive than australia lmao
Why? Elsewise no forsikring?
yes, you can get two issues. 1. no insurance and 2. they have random controls where you might be required to fix the whole house or they cut your power
They look into your junction boxes and your fuse cabinets?
we have no home insurance to begin with
then i'll cook marshmellows with it
Also if you sell you need documentation everything is legal or you can get a load of issues and a heavy degrade of value
simple solution to it, dont sell or blame it on others
If it was that easy. If they control I dont want to be here without electricity
yeah, sucks to be handicapped and not being able to do stuff yourself
Wait so even if an electrician changed a light switch 5 years ago you need proof of that happening?
Yes
Like replaced a broken switch with a new one type of change
That’s incredibly stupid
This house is 30 years old and I need proof on everything
Glad that’s not a thing here
All they really care here, is that the electricity meter works as it should
the rest is up to us
Like here yes you need an electrician legally, and if they wanted to they could inspect, and finding stuff they could ask for proof. But most minor stuff doesn’t have an electrical safety document with it, and there’s no requirement on sale
So you could do it yourself, you risk voiding home insurance though if they find out
Norway has always been kinda a nanny-state
meh, one more reason to move to sweden instead
not enough snow
Now the lobby wants it to be required to have a plumber to attach a washing machine to the water
not enough remote areas
lobbyists really love to squeez every little penny out of people..
yeah
Stupid. Only thing regulated tbh should be attaching gas lines, given they can cause a hell of a lot of damage if done wrong. Electric and water both are pretty simple
Im so jealous on the americans that can do most themself, though their electric system is 30 years outdated vs europe
i'm in germany
we've done pretty much everything ourself
except the gas line to the heater & the electricity line from the street to our house and electricity meter
both of which are totally fair not to be done by average people
Yeah I guess mains into the house should also be restricted
we dont have gas lines here (a very, very few have), but in general no gas here
all the wires & plumbing has been done by us
the only issue is, we've underestimated how much electricity we need in our garden, so the line and fuse are a bit underrated and it goes out a few times a year
plumbing is not legal to do yourself too
ouch
my brother built a bathroom, and had to tear it down cause the inspector didnt want to approve it, even if it was to code
;-;
In my view you should be able to do everything yourself, and get it inspected and approved
What if you'd just move to the woods without electricity and water?
I bet its some regulations for that too lol
ouch
you are not allowed to mount solar panels yourself so maybe thats the catch lol
Haha, yeah
The baseline of what you can touch is 50V, so POE almost is not allowed to do yourself lol
I would not be suprised if POE would be regulated too
so a 48v battery system is allowed to have, nice
most consumer electronics runs on lower voltage anyway
yeah, but you can only touch 12/48V up to some amps so high amp 12v is not allowed eather
In norway just assume its not legal
well, with a salery tripple as high as the average european, i'm totally cool with it
salary tripple, but prices are also trippled
income tax in germany is also pretty much 40-50%
auch
when you count in all expenses that you must pay and cant avoid at all
yeah. all in all I guess its ok enough if you get something for it
But for smart home hobbiest I just would love to have more freedom to make my house proper smart
how exactly is it hindering you?
too expensive. If I would do everything I wanted it would cost at least 50k USD
and more detailed?
change switches, more power (this house is from a time where it was not the power drag as today so underdimensioned), integrated smart plugs, smart dimmers etc
find your ways around it
use light bulbs with remote switches and all the fancy functions you need
use those smart plugs, that you plug into the wall outlet
How is your house underpowered? You should be able to just up the fuse on the main switchboard? Though a 50a fuse should be fine
Also what income for that
too thin wires
Oh ew. How is that possible for a 1990s house
@umbral cliff about 90k
Well, i meant it more like having too much outlets wired to the same wire or stuff like that
Too few outlets and such
This house have 1,5mm2 wires and 10amps, when I should have 2,5mm2 and 16 aps and ground
that would be the best
my office got ONE outlet
ONE!
Surely you can add another outlet to that room then
yeah of course, but not myself
i pretty much always use those multiple outlet thingies
But that’s worse than australia. Parents have a 50+ year old house, has 2.5mm wiring
No thought about whether something can go there or not. There’s room
Powerboards?
Yeah a power board
I use them everywhere
Just getting quality ones
They’re very easy to use. And nicer than like 10 points in the wall
electrically, thats the right thing to do ^
those power boards are not really a great solution
I’ve got 2 5 port ones and a 12 port one running off two separate sockets. Given the low power draw it’s fine
They work fine, they have overload protection built in, and otherwise are just solid metal linking it all
We wired everything with 2,5mm² wires except the lamps, they are wired with 1,5
yeah jut dont go to IKEA and buy power strips
Why not? They’re still meeting electrical standards
Here it’s all lighting is 1.5, everything else is 2
Guessing they wouldn’t here given they need to meet electrical standards
I use APC power strips with power surge protection. Quality
cause each plug, adds resistance and one more point of failure
cheap ones which people like to buy, tend to use crap quality components aswell
not saying all power boards are bad, but electrically speaking having the proper amount of proper outlets in the wall is better
Yeah the amount in the wall is better. Except having 6-10 points is very very ugly
yup
And in areas where they’re not needed all the time, useless too (eg bedroom because that’s where my computer lives atm)
but 2 points each corner should be fine and once per room 6 ports or so for computers
but not my problem, i'll stick to my power boards
cheaper & easier to do
If I built a house I would go crazy with plugs etc. I probably would even concider KNX
knx?
ooh
Honestly I wouldn’t want to integrate stuff in except for either fibre or Ethernet
i'm not that deep in the smart home eco system
Even 1 gig Ethernet will still be a home standard for the next decade at least
Of all things I have ethernet to all rooms except my office
Though by then I feel 10 gig will be more usable
1 gig local yes, but residential connections will likely stay under it for many many years
I have a 10gbit backhaul
I would still probably wire fibre up for where network comes in -> network closet area -> study
fibre
Yet 1 gig residential connections are already a thing in many countries
And in a decade they’ll be the mainstream
how long is a decade, 100 years?
I prefer to work on cable. I DO feel the difference on wifi vs cable
by then, yeah maybe for 80% of people its viable
I have 1gig up and down internet connection
we have 50/10
I know Germany is slow, but even australia will have a fibre connection for most if not all suburban connections. And 1 gig will become a lot cheaper
In a lot of Asian countries 1 gig is the slow service
(Eg Singapore)
max we can have is 175/40 for 50€ a month
And 5-10 gig is their premium service
Sounds like Germany is just being Germany lol
At least australia is trying to fix the mess of the nbn by upgrading homes
with hyper deluxe super master vectoring
Here its not enough competition. We have fibre in the house so can terminate fibre directly in the switch
so the potential for higher speed is there
most newer routers come with 2,5gbit WAN now
I can’t see myself needing more than a gig symmetric for years
I run unifi so have a bit more
Especially when 100/40 works perfectly fine
I cant imagine going back to 100 lol
dont thing they even sell it anymore
least is 300/300
i'd be more than happy with a proper 100/40 connection for a fair price
but all ISP's sucks in germany and ship shitty routers with high bufferbloat and have fun diying any solution without getting insane
250 is nice, just don’t need it so don’t need to pay for it
You can’t just use your own router?
That’s worse than australia
Wow
well you can, after jumping through a lot of problems with telekom
if you use another, its easier but those have way way way shittier customer service as they wont face legal issues like telekom
If you use your own router here, depending on the ISP the only thing you lose is access to the voip based landline (otherwise it’s exactly the same)
Probably the only best part of nbn is it’s removed the isp difference, now pricing is set by nbn & they all use that main connection. They compete on other areas but all let you byo
Im still a fan of landlines but that’s just me lol
The way i fixed bufferbloat, is by using an OpenWRT router behind the ISP router and installed SQM QoS onto it, i have ~7% less bandwith but no 300ms+ lag spikes
and i've also lost all ipv6 support by using a router behind the isp's
At least ipv6 isn’t super needed as of yet
5G is being more integrated now so landlines are obsolete
But so bad you can’t just put your own router in place and use it
yep, but i'd like to use it
we still have hybrid ipv6 support only..
I still prefer a physical proper phone & one that rings across the house. Useful to try and get the attention of whoever is home
But again, is me lol
yeah same with us, we still have proper phones at home
Even my parents at 80 years old have only cell phone now
If anyone is in the UK and looking at a new HDD, https://www.cclonline.com/product/290169/ST12000VE0008/Hard-Drives/Seagate-SkyHawk-AI-12TB-3-5-SATA-III-6Gb/s-7200-RPM-256MB-Hard-Drive/HDD3629/ is an insane deal. Just bought one for my CCTV setup
My grandma mostly uses her mobile, still useful to have a landline if needed
The old PSTN was ok as it worked when power was down, but the IP phone is down when internet is down
Also pretty sure my isp here has supported native IPV6 for ages, and enabled by default since November 2021
I just like physical phones & landlines. I know my mobile does it all, still prefer that stuff
thats fully allowed
i like having my personal phone and home phone separated
we call those power strips, sometimes people just refer to them as surge protectors
Here they're powerboards. All have built in surge protection
They're required by law to have overload protection sorry, not quite to surge protection
I got it mixed up
we often call them extension cord in germany
yea i think it's the same here just a switch with built in fuse.. altho we still have some old stock lingering that don't even have that
what we call extension cords is mainly just single outlet on both ends, sometimes they can up to 3-4
yeah i know
but the name comes from the length being like 6ft+
i find it funny tho
We have extension cords being just the 1->1 extender (usually 1m all the way to 10-30m)
I love this @glacial knot @finite atlas @dusky plank

Is that the actual name of hide and seek in German though?
Oh
It is the same in Norwegian
"gjemsel"
I thought about Eckstein
@hearty depot too then
Think I tagged all the German speaking ones

Or did I miss anyone
Love that you have the confidence to post selfies now @forest edge
don't try and play it off that, that isn't you irl
If I only had that much hair
super glue
hide & seek = verstecken
the guy sings: "open your eyes i'm coming, watch out i'm coming, dont show (yourself), hide yourself"
so kinda an advanced adult version of hide and seek i guess
The word Eckstein was what I thought was the German word for it though
Since it was placed there
Perhaps it was chosen for rhyming though
eckstein is corner stone
Eckstein - verstecken
Kurragömma
Yes, i know what the word means
You mean
Damn Swedes
You uncivilised oaths
hello raccoon!
Swenglish @last cedar
Damn capital letters
Capitals are the worst
so are capitalists
Especially the ones full of Norwegians
nyom
It's really hot in here today
Did someone leave their sensor on atx's seat again
.f2c 161
161 degrees fahrenheit = 71.67 degrees celsius!
Man its so tiring doing ha dashboard without having a gram of creative talent
Im a programmer, not a designer ffs
Do you need a dashboard?
Yes, its a partner requirement
It start to look decent though
Now I just have to do what I promised; make the blinds, lights and tv turn off / up when you say good night to google
Ew dashboards
Dashboards are kinda kewl ngl
I think I made the best one this far of the ones I made, but probably hate it tomorrow lol
Using the minimal thingy:
Ew light theme
Its dark too
best strategy is to do something and live with it for a while to decide what's important
Happy now? :p
very

Hope you dont do that to your kid @clear ferry - getting a scribble drawing and asking wtf is thisssssss? hehehehe
in daddies eyes
