That's why I suggested something you can still use a 24VAC system with, then you can use an ecobee or something with HomeKit ...

jagged knot
#

I have mitsubishi, that is controlled over cloud, I believe. No issues so far. Also "connected" miele washing machine. The smart capabilities are peace of shit.

hybrid obsidian
#

but Daikin is garbage. I wish I had spent the extra $7k on Mitsubishi or something else

#

even with local API

snow hedge
hybrid obsidian
#

24VAC is the standard signaling used by most dumb thermostats, and smart thermostats.

#

mini splits usually use something proprietary.

#

But you can get adapters that will convert it to 24VAC.

snow hedge
#

ah I think I see, then I could chuck on some zigbee thermostats?

hybrid obsidian
#

yes

#

essentially you connect 24VAC across a wire to signal like heat, and another wire for cool, another for fan, reverse valve, etc.

snow hedge
#

What would I do if I don't want 72 different thermostats on my walls? I already have thermostats everywhere for the underfloor heating, having a second set for the AC would be weird

hybrid obsidian
#

you guys are weird and do like 220V for in floor heating eh?

#

even if its controlled by something else

snow hedge
#

I think my thermostats are actually 12V strangely.

hybrid obsidian
#

in NA, my in floor heating is controlled by 24VAC .. lol

#

to a honeywell NC valve

#

(normally closed)

#

well that would be a question to ask your HVAC contractor, but honestly they are usually not super smart when it comes to the low voltage side of the system ..

jagged knot
#

what is wrong with 220v underfloor? as long as you have leakage breaker it is safe

hybrid obsidian
#

and im not familiar enough with EU heating to speak on it. 🙂 see what tstat options are available and go from there.

hybrid obsidian
#

we have 120V and 240V electric in floor heating ..

snow hedge
#

Sounds like a solution though, and that same installer does do Mitsubishi. Suppose I'll have to have a chat. It's always weird broaching this issue, like "I want your smart device, but only if it supports local comms" "wtf is local comms?"

hybrid obsidian
#

just dont do Daikin

snow hedge
#

I mean, that warning was enough to put me off Daikin for life

hybrid obsidian
#

im sooo disappointed with my system.

snow hedge
#

which is funny because they just lost a sale 😂

hybrid obsidian
#

the local API is nice 🙂

#

with adikin

#

daikin

#

but the hardware is trash ...

snow hedge
#

yea, but they removed it

hybrid obsidian
#

yeah but you can still buy it .. lol

snow hedge
#

ah

hybrid obsidian
#

Daikin uses a S21 adapter which is like 3.3v or 5v serial

#

S21 connector*

jagged knot
#

Mitsubishi electric and MELCloud is fine.
integrates well with home-assistant, but cloud app works even better, yet isolated.

#

mine had wifi adapter out of the box

snow hedge
hybrid obsidian
jagged knot
#

well, it works without cloud.

hybrid obsidian
snow hedge
#

Cloud optional is fine (eg Shelly), but if I loose functionality or have to depend on the cloud for functionality, then no.

jagged knot
#

cloud is just optional remote control

jagged knot
#

but I think you can remove adapter and add like esp2866, that may work

hybrid obsidian
#

i also made the mistake of buying their $500 pro adapter which is 1) supported local connection, 2) the worst software implementation ive ever seen, and 3) didnt actually do 24VAC like it said it was supposed to .. 4) had a full ssh server running on it, but dont give you the password, and 5) couldnt fit in the unit

snow hedge
hybrid obsidian
#

and I found a jumper to cut on the daikin to turn the fan off when its not actually cooling. but that made the temperature sensing of the unit even worse.

#

and theres no way to put the temperature sensor outside of the unit.

#

essentially the unit heats and cools the temperature sensor lol

snow hedge
#

haha oh dear 😂

hybrid obsidian
#

and also has this absolutely AMAZING thermostat logic.. sec

#

I found their engineering manul and made notes

jagged knot
#

😆

hybrid obsidian
#

tl;dr It will overheat by 2.5-3C because why not

#

(my comments are in red and blue)

snow hedge
#

haha

jagged knot
#

was it daikin?

snow hedge
#

But yea, it sounds like from your suggestion, target mitsubishi, and some zigbee thermostats that can ideally manage the underfloor and air conditioning, at the same time?

hybrid obsidian
#

sure. but you'll have to be mighty clear that you need some kind of 24VAC adapter, or maybe find out from @jagged knot what model eh has that supports local control

#

also dont fall for their 3rd party solution which uses IR to control the units ..

#

if you want to use IR to control the units, just use esphome

snow hedge
#

and I suppose also check what voltage my existing system is, which should be fairly easy

hybrid obsidian
#

(the units beep on IR commands.)

jagged knot
#

I did not try to micromanage mitsubishi, just H.A. sets fan/temperature modes according to day time and outside temp

jagged knot
#

in my case, I have so many things to renovate/fix in the house, that simple/easy solution is the best one for now.

jagged knot
hybrid obsidian
#

run it in prod.

#

#yolo

jagged knot
#

ok, time to go, bye

snow hedge
#

Seems like 12v to me

#

@hybrid obsidian does 👆 mean I'd want a 12V AC system instead of 24?

hybrid obsidian
snow hedge
#

fun, topics to raise with the installer, I'm learning. Thanks 🙂

hybrid obsidian
#

keep in mind i'm in Canada 🙂

snow hedge
#

Yea, but at least it gives me some pointers on what I need to talk about / ask.

hybrid obsidian
#

we have 24VAC and 240VAC basically

#

good luck. i find the installers useless. (=

snow hedge
#

Apparently this installer is pretty cool, but I guess we'll find out \o/

floor plan can do that?

Hey all, question.

Recently been learning Cron Jobs, and I ended up looking through HA directories, and saw that under the "root" within /etc/crontabs/ it states some cron jobs but points to directories and such. If doing this, how do you write the cron job within the directory of say /etc/periodic/daily ? Do you write it the same with the times, or leave some things blank?

Those are just scripts that run, in that case they run daily

But yes, the timing is... ... something...

low harness

In other news, apparently my home town has the longest bench in Sweden.

#

As it turns out, the neighboring town Kalmar has claimed to have the longest bench for a while - at 220 meters. But a bench in Karlskrona has been measured to 230 meters, and someone even put up a brass sign.
"The Actual longest bench in Sweden with an impressive length of 230 meters, so f***k Kalmar"

#

Kalmar has allegedly admitted defeat, and the people behind the sign are now looking towards Europe. Apparently Genéve in Switzerland claims to have the longest bench in the world at a mere 120 meters...

Anyone built a permanent display using something other than a tablet? I was hoping to do this with a raspberry pi and a big touch screen monitor, but after days of fighting am pretty sure the pi and the monitor just aren't compatible. Anyone done it with a windows machine?

last cedar
#

Well, home assistant can just dial up in any browser

#

But I am pretty sure people want WAF and touchscreen functionality, hence using tablets, but anything will work

clever mortar
#

Though a 480x320 resolution display may not be very usable

rough tundra
#

The monitor I got is great, 20 inch touchscreen, just cant get the pi to recognize the touches.

#

So now I'm choosing between 1) stick with the pi and monitor but just use a mouse or other device 2) tablet (way smaller than the nice monitor and enclosure I built) 3) try windows where the monitor has support.

vestal reef
#

I did 😉

do you have specific drivers that are not included in the linux distro you're using by chance ?

rough tundra
#

I know they don't have drivers specific for linux for my monitor

vestal reef
#

Rpi was just too sluggish and had constant overheating issues, that's why I made the change to a mini pc (I had one lying around from another project anyway)

rough tundra
#

i.e. Dell doesnt have drivers

clear ferry
#

Ewww pi

vestal reef
#

hmm.. the supplier where I bought mine said drivers for my monitor were in nearly all distros (which seems true) and sent me the drivers separately in case I should need them

rough tundra
#

It may be easier/cheaper for me to get a minipc running a version of windows officially supported by the monitor and just run kiosk mode on that. I literally just need the thing to pop open a browser.

clear ferry
#

This is why we buy cheap tablets

rough tundra

How does a network speed test work?
If I use an online speed checker, I get a pair of gauges on the screen which ramp up and jiggle around for a while, implying that I'm pumping out and absorbing a lot of data in an effort to stress my link.
Yet, a speedtest tells me that I've got 9Mbps up, 38Mbps down, but during that "test" my router WAN port showed 1200kB/s up (correct) and 2500kB/s down (only half what the speedtest showed).
