But I didn't pay anything, it was free @umbral cliff
image of atx?
no
I run my Minecraft server on a vps cz of I am lazy to port forward and I am locked out of my router
ew minecraft
what are you? 12?
13
Why not
How are you locked out of your router? Your parents?
Same as you then @umbral cliff ?
... fuck off Atx, lest I side with Sonoma in the future 😛
Fliped the remote access setting and accidentally save without reading the warning then get locked out
I played rust with a 22 year old still living with his parents who locked down the router, they even did parental lock and shut down internet access to his lan port in his room after 10pm. was funny shit
Remote access should've just been from internet side not local
Tf, thats insane
Houses are expensive man
Idk but it blocked both site with a not authorized error
Pssh, just buy one @umbral cliff
Both site? You tried 192.168.0.1/192.168.1.1/10.0.0.1?
My router IP is on 192.168.0.1
Ah yes with all this money I have

Also mobile data -> E? You on 2G still??
It's just bad connection in my house
Surprised your country still has a 2G network
Yes lol
If I get outside my apartment I get 4g
sounds like 20th century high iron bricks
Yes
I am on the 16 floor
D: I don't think I've ever been in a residential building that high 😄
there's this real cheap house in germany rn, you might need to be fast though. demand is high
drachelb
Yeah that one
Haggebuttne
It at least appears to have a roof
the previous* owner is probably the most hated person in the world
After putin
not sure
well, half the hate for him is people being idiots and memeing
Speaking of hated, isn't Fritzl supposed to be let out this year
they let him out? o.0
Thought I read it somewhere
guess they will reevaluate the penalty, or he gets into closed institution
The sentence was life. does Austria also map that to 15 years?
would still be at least until next year /shrug
I'm somewhat amused by the amount of music inspired by him https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josef_Fritzl#Musik
the simple english page does mention that he might be released after 15 years. which would be 23 or 24 depending on when they start counting
they won't, I'm sure
How many years does he have left either way? He was over 70 when they put him in
I'm amazed how someone can look like a 1960s cartoon villain
hm? Did you look in a mirror?
I thankfully do not have a Fritzl mustache
you'd have more hair on your face than on your head then

Who is it?
But a bitch still ain’t one 😉

@tidal bronze any hdmi to Ethernet recommendations
Need to display cams from blue iris to another room possibly 2 rooms porch and living room
1080 would be okay 4K just a bonus
Cat 6 btw
If you are not going for 4K most baluns / splitters on Amazon should do it.
Does 4K complicate things
Yes the price.
?
@tidal bronze should I invest in something 4K and will allow network
If you plan to expand yes, as long as you have a dedicated switch and runs for displays
Yes on the one I listed or invest in better?

i always thought the the vscode server icon is a weird chinese symbol
i just realized its a cloud, a note and a bracket all in one
haha
its the "code" icon
not the "vscode" icon
just to prevent Microsoft objects 😄
their naming of the various parts there is annoying
It's a pretty great free ecosystem, so I'll cut them some slack
its fugly anyway 😂
hm?
Looks like a bunch of SVG icons threw up on each other.
Semi-related, I think it's clever how the default weather card assembles its icons by overlaying embedded SVG icons
oh, the icon. not the editor. Agreed
Just ordered one of these, i'm hyped.
Achetez malin, vivez mieux! Aliexpress.com
Anyone gave them a try yet?
oh, it can do location in room? Maybe I should get one
I speak neither spanish nor chinese well enough to follow that posting tbh.
Xiaomi‘s ecological chain partner Lumi Technology makers of the popular Aqara range of smart home products has launched the Aqara Human Presence Sensor FP1. The sensor is equipped with a new generation of millimeter-wave radar sensors, which will take you into a new world of perception. The product will retail for 399 yuan (~$63) and …
Are those MMwave as well? 😮
70$ seems expensive for a PIR. Aqara has some for 20$
even the phillips ones are like half that
So.. it is MMwave?
guess they are talking about michaelw one's
I am yeah
FP1 looks interesting, will wait for ful zone support

Why 3d models cost so much money
Looks like the model isn't the problem there
Just noticed it's shipping
How the heck it can be so high
International...
Is there anything to turn down the cost
I still want that model
Let me check my crystal ball...
Nope, says it hasn't any idea what you're buying or from what supplier, so you're basically fucked
CDJapan charged me ~40€ for shipping.
Only ever order there when I want enough stuff to spend 100€ on product. So I'm not scalped too badly by shipping
I still see the VSCode icon in the side bar, in the supervisor I see the new icon though
Shapeway
That is a mdi icon… not distributed by the add-on 😉
Aah
Then ... check their site, see what they offer. Same as you'd do for any other site on the planet
Maybe shipping to your country from where they're printing it just sucks
Let me convert wrl to stl first
So I can use it with other providers
Emby with hardware transcoding support would be nice 😇
Guess I am stuck to shapeway
How will a 7cm build cost if I use pla
depends on your fill%, overhands and some other stuff
that's one wiide boy screen
i dunno how people can game on that crap
Hey, here’s a curious one: does anyone here do much smoking or other slow cooking and what smart technologies do you use or consider to help keep an eye on your work?
I’m thinking both a smart thermometer and an electric bellows would help me not go out and blow into the coals box to bump that temp up as often
I wouldn’t mind 30, I’m on 25.25 and that only does loan repayments, groceries, and a little saving when you live alone
hides in 52 before extras
Morning all,
I need a second pair of eyes on this problem. Im running a plex (Ubuntu headless 21.04) server here at home. I went from non raid to raid0 and backed up all my media before that. After backup all media is restored, but new media doesnt get added to the plex library. I did 'chmod -R 755 directoryname' to give new rights. But it doesnt seem to work. Does anyone know a workaround for this?
Well, is said folder added as a media library in Plex?
Is Plex running as a container or bare metal?
whyd the HA amber change to yellow?
Cøpiright captialism i guess
crazy
please don't shoot me
they do some aggressive adertisement marketing
you can find that product on 10 different domains
haha
So, basically it is shit and they can't get rid of it
It's not even amber. It's black. False advertising.
I find that colour blindness offensive
Then my work here is done.
Hi, the folder is set in Plex, yes, and all previously backed up media is back in it again. Plex is running 'bare metal'. I was thinking of reinstalling plex maybe, not sure what that would solve
If you have presented the right folders to Plex, it should just index then
If not, read the log
I have checked everything double. Download instances work under the right name:group, everything gets moved around and picked up. It just is plex. Let me go ahead and see if the logs detail anything
Also, running Plex and all *arr in containers is life
Much easier to maintain
hmmm
I suppose its too late for that, i will have to start moving things around. And you know, i am one hell of a linux-noob.
Already proud to have come this far tbh... but i will certainly follow that advice when i get a fresh install
But would it make sense to reinstall plex server?
Not really
😦
Its the rules, i see now that new series (being downloaded an placed) dont have any rights to them!
Make a folder propegate subfolder and file permissions
And make whatever download clients you are using use the same permissions
yes
Showoff :P
@clear ferry i've got it...i gave correct permissions to clients

what to do if my pi refuses my password as i try to connect via ssh?
Has it ever worked?
thing i i have not been able tof ind any issue
yes, two hours ago before dinner xD
to restart a pi?
thats a thing?
Yes
how?
Not nice for sd card but sometimes it has to be done
turn off and on again, okay xD
imma try that yes
why did it stop working in the first place tho
Eww pi
Without any access its difficult to look into the issue
seems to be working
Yeah then look into the logs what happened
its not accepting the password
Best idea ever on SD cards
not the one is set up, or the base one
Yeah then you have to plug a monitor to it or reinstall the os
openmediavautl is isntalled on it, and it worsk jsut fine, so the os or openmedievault arent stuck or not working
publickey.password (?)
what is that supposed to mean pi xD
Dunno we‘re no raspberry os support here you should ask there
there is a place for that?
Have you changed the ssh password from default?
normally yes, i changed it to 0000
its not made to secure the pi, its to have something simpler then the base one
Plug a keyboard and a monitor to it and look if someone changed the password
how do i check that ?
Look into the logs
You also can reinstall the os and do yourself a favor, use an ssd instead of an sd card
to reinstall the os, do i just relash the same drive with pi os ?
Installing the os freshly on the sd card. You have to set up everything new then. But as i said go for a ssd on the raspberry pi, an sd card does not live very long with home assistant on it.
i see
They‘re living quite well with an read only OS
alpine?
my grossly underpowered pi works fine now for 3 years, the sd card gave up long ago i believe
no way you can write on that thing but it still boots and does its job fine
I used https://gitlab.com/larsfp/rpi-readonly back then,
now the raspi-config gives you options for RO overlay but I think the boot process is still r/w with this
I'm about to redo my entire HA setup. Wish my luck.
I don't think USB boot was out the last time I set up. I see an sd card in here used for boot
Eww
🙂 good day
I went to go update it and it keeps doing a sweet loop with the database upgrade ( been a while )
I don't feel like dicking with it. It has been a long while, just going to redo it
I'm going to make it simpler without extra stuff. I just want necessities.
it = HA
What hardware are you using
rpi 4b and an ssd
it has worked well forever, just the update wasn't happy. oh well
I'd rather start fresh than figure out the problem
get rid of this sd card while I'm at it
And youre still satisfied with the performance
yeah, I was running influxdb and all that fine from it
no need for anything more for me
I don't do cctv stuffs or anything
Try updating your client. A recent ssh upgrade raised the standard.
its been tow hours that i have been fighting with it, im reinstalling the whole thing
Shame, what client are you using to connect?
Cause, once everything updates, you will prob be in the same boat

Pi Master Race. Bow you peasant
Carne Asada taco time.
you shouldn't grill pickles like that
Just warming them up.
ffs now im drunk and hungry
Me yesterday
I may have backed up every single thing except my automations folder and the only thing I really want is my automations folder. neat
You should automate that
lol, I had an old gitignore in my folder that was a bit dumb
oh well
At some point I moved to an automations folder and my gitignore didn't allow it
resetting up automations is half the fun tho
big true
I cringe when I see people put tasmota or esp on shelly devices.. all that extra work for no added benefit lol
no added benefit 🤔
Pineapple belongs on pizza, not tacos. 😉
I thought it was mango, which I can get behind, but I guess they're a little big
But I like what you are doing with the jalapeños
I really liked you until now 🤣
Fruit does not belong on a taco
yea.. what benefit do you think you get? the benefit of doing more work?
Hahaha poor you
I know this will disgust you... But....
Truenas "apps" look pretty sweet
But a very hands off solution
Saw a video last night and it looks great, but not actually played with it
Yeah
When you say implementation is bad, do you mean kubernetes in general, on the scale way of using it?
I know you are allergic to extra layers of stuff when you don't need it
The scale way
They swapped from k3s to k8s pretty late in the release
So they have some changes to get fixed
And they need to get multihost support running at some point
25.04 🤣
"there is always next year"
Don’t shelly’s get you local control anyway?

Shellys have the option yes
But primarily they are cloud still afaik
And if you block them from the internet I'm not sure if you can update them
But, all the cool kids use cloud implementations
Disgusting
🤣
Looks like cloud but the HA integration is local, so not terrible. Just connect to internet for update
But yeah fully local is a benefit of tasmota then
Would be cool if the integration made a fake internet for them to update from
Cloud is disgusting, best regards a cloud certified consultant
Does that make them a meteorologist?
Official music video for the single "Cloudbusting" written, produced and performed by the British singer Kate Bush. It was the second single released from her no.1 1985 album Hounds of Love. "Cloudbusting" peaked at no.20 in the UK Singles Chart.
The music video, directed by Julian Doyle, was conceived by Terry Gilliam and Kate Bush. The vide...
Ah, my hacktoberfest 2021 shirt has shipped

No meteorologists deal with the useful types of cloud
It’s good for the average person who doesn’t want hubs unless matter comes by and actually completes its goal of being fully open to everything to connect and not being locked down as it probably will
And have to buy their whole infrastructure new every 14 months because the cheap cloud company they bought either went bankrupt or closed down the service for said cloud product
Or just suddenly started charging for it

At least with Tuya surely they won’t close down. The data is too important
that is awful. like really. wtf?
stock firmware has all of that lol
It's not my fault you are musically inept
I think a russian bomb went off near your house and your hearing is all screwed up
Maybe, maybe not, they might retire individual products though
another thing you should probably go see a doctor about
When should we spin up your first free cloud vm ?
Surely Tuya wouldn’t be retiring bulbs though which is what the majority use

It happens all the time for different vendors
Osram has retired at least two generations of smart home stuff
Pretty likely it just goes to a diffrent company relabeled
I had a weather station from a cloud company, their only server died and all users got money back from the reseller
Unifi even retired some access points and stated if you tried updating them they would brick
Yeah but Tuya specifically. Thought all it needs is Tuya cloud and that’s it

But yeah local is definitely far better
Just thinking for people who don’t/ can’t set up HA
I don't buy Tuya unless I can flash it
I have to change a chip on one of the Tuya devices I have
Teddi loves doing that Frankenstein stuff
Since they’re not esp32/etc
Its on the blackadder website how to do
Just de solder and re solder
And cut one trace
I would never bother
Not that bad
I can still find old Tuya stock
so buy the strip and then pick up some cheap controllers
Lots of nice ZigBee controllers
I did that, got some stupid cheap tuya strips and then bought some magichome controllers. combined it was still cheap
Ew magichome
i dunno why ew.. they are awesome
even more so now they make it retarded easy to go local only right out of the box, not internet needed or account or anything
only downside is the change in chips so I guess an mqtt nerd couldn't get his rocks off
Will also try that. Just couldn’t find the recommended zigbee controllers
Setting up tuya local is a pain
not even an option with modren stuff
Keeps changing how it works.
You can just about do it, if you use an old android app and bluestacks
yea no thx
It is
if i wanted to beat my head against a wall i'd just listen to the crap atx keeps posting
Just have to get the code from setting it up online first
Then kill it’s internet access
And dns access
I tried with the tuya controllers that came with my strips.. could not get it to work
course this has been a couple years ago
I need to find a decent tutorial on how to flash my stuff.
I have it running with that Tuya strip that I want to change the chip on. Works perfectly fine and that’s the modern Tuya stuff
Unless it's a soldering job, CBA with that shit.
so did they readd a local option? confused
Basically get the serial to usb adaptor. Connect the ends to the right parts on the board. Run the website/ terminal based tool
It’s a HACS integration for local Tuya
Oof.
oh
Which depending on your individual device may need soldering
Some have holes you can put pins through. Others are solder
The most wonderful thing happened recently. We haven't had internet connection since Thursday
So the long stupid progress of making everything local has finally paid off.
@forest edge https://github.com/rospogrigio/localtuya
find out there really is such a thing as the sun and experince it for the first time?
Ouch that’s a long time. What happened
Mistake by the company.
What did they do that caused it though
Honestly no idea. Don't think I'll ever know.
Did they just not connect you? Or is their infrastructure down
so you gotta block the devices from internet?
I say change ISP though
Infrastructure down.
Yes. Because it’s not a flash. So they can still operate
I get 900 Mbs down, I can't go back.
Surely there’s another provider who can provide a similar level of service
I use to do that with my magichome bulbs but tested the newer firmware with them and found they do not call home when set to local mode so stopped
Sad I only have 100
100 is plenty for many things
just don't go dl'ing the entire season of buffy the vampire slayer
@umbral cliff nope they ran a custom line to the house. I just have to bare it.
It's okay, I'm not moaning. I should have reported the problem earlier.
They ran a fiber cable into my house lol
(Not the big one, the small and flat one)
Yeah this is cityfibre.
I live in a apartment
They got that all the way to my floor
Which is 16
Well you could manage it, it would just take a while
What is this? Internet downtime?
Even shitty australia internet doesn’t have internet downtime for 4+ days
Not unless it’s something super major and even then it’ll be resolved relatively quickly
I don't think I've had more than 6h in the last 24 years
Does Norway have idiot tradies with backhoes?
Because that’s most of the outages here lol
You might be right
your last outage was almost a whole day atx
I did my own digging for the ftth in 2004
U notice that flat small cable?
That's the fiber cable
Wait what
So you should be able to get over 100 then
If you pay for it
you whined about using your mobile to talk to us
Yes, but was it that long?
I got the speed cap 100mb plan
Unlimited data lol
Maybe that’s why it’s only 6 hours. Only what he can remember
Flat cables are capped at 100.the waves can't go high/ low enough. You need a wavy cable to get more than 100
Data caps are a selling point? Haven’t had those in australia for years now.
But yeah if you only want to pay for 100 that’s fair
Datacaps were cool for six months in 1998
Oh
So maybe if I get my dad to upgrade to 1gb we will need to rewire it?
Average household doesn’t need more than 100, as long as Infrastructure can support faster for the future
No it was a joke lol
And the reason you can't bend fiber cables is simple, if you bend too much, the dataa can't make the turn, and it crashes out of the cable
That is actually true
It goes too fast
Here's my 900
Hmm I coilled the cable in circles
Is that bad
Fiber cables have a maximum coil angle
thats… copper, innit?
this fiber
It was actually a joke, but coiling too tight is bad, you can break the inside of the fiber cable
Eww double extender
Visual example
Angry fibre
double extender?
snek
Right I can see what your problem is
On the right looks like one of those things that takes 1 plug and converts to 2
ah yeah
Yeah there’s no light coming out of the cable 🤣
Hmm mine is a small flat cable and the mini connector
i need to get rid of that crap sometime
That looks like two thin cables, next to each other?
I should try to get rid of the gpon and just connect it directly to my Switch
I dislike them because they don’t have surge protecting built in, whilst power boards do
We called it shotgun cable when we ran coax like that
I use a gpon lol
eh, just the isp modem and a hue iris, couldnt care less 😄
Mine just a gpon and a router
Nothing more
what is gpon
G-piece of network
I've started doing some documentation @last cedar
Yeah just my personal dislike lol
Idk it says gpon terminal on my Huawei device
oh its just the connector and passive spec
Yeah
Wait it's a technology
https://us.hitrontech.com/learn/what-is-gpon-and-how-does-it-work/
Oi where’s my recognition. I give you the Aussie humour
😛
Also what’s Mirai
みらい
Btw I wish I could reset my router to get access back to my admin panel of my router
I accidentally messed up remote settings and locked myself out
Do you need admin parts though. As a 13YO you probably shouldn’t be fiddling too bad
New style firewall material that is
Yeah if you lock yourself out maybe shouldn’t be doing that
I port forwarded before
I accidentally switched on one more tonggle and updated it accidentally due to pressing on wrong bittons
So @clear ferry do you have opnsense doing dns then?
Yes
I doubt it’s locked out completely. You tried using Ethernet directly then?
Yes
not all that fond of unbound
Just a not authorized at the login screen
it works, but I think it's a little sluggish
Is there another program that is good that can run dns since I’m not too keen on running opnsense on what hardware I currently have
i run adguard on my opnsense, like michelle
Wish my parents could give me the pppoe creds so I can reset my router and fix it
I actually had to unblock a site in my DnsBL list the other day
Wife couldn't deliver lottery tickets

"gambling"
what does that mean? deliever lottery tickets?
The national lottery service was blocked
I wanted something slightly better quality but without running a firewall. Want more dedicated hardware in case my server breaks down, old hardware & only one device means I’m not well set up for failure yet
not messed with modren lotto so no idea how that works online. if you say lotto ticket i picture the scratch cards and the pick tickets they print at the gas stations lol
I wish I could block ads and still be using 1.1.1.1 with warp
Yeah but more worried about failure than hardware usage
Just setup pihole and do thag
i need to upgrade my tincan, it doesnt manage all that bandwidth + ids/ips
It’ll send dns via pihole then to 1.1.1.1
Norsk Tipping AS is the national lottery in Norway, located in Hamar. The company offers a wide range of lottery, sports and instant games in the Norwegian market. Norsk Tipping is owned by the Norwegian government and administered by Norwegian Ministry of Culture. Ever since Norsk Tipping started in 1948, the idea has been that the profit from ...
I do, and use DoT
Pick tickets can be issued online. They just generate the number/ you chose the numbers and then check online
It’s all digitalised now
psssh Dnssec is a thing, i like quad9
But that's only forwarding requests to cf dns
But no Dot and WARP
Then install a local ad blocker
Like browser extension
I block all DNS requests from clients internally, send them to unbound and block advertising and tracking cookies, then forward requests to cloudflare via DoT and use dnssec
lol 1 in 5 mil.. that low pop really turns in your favor lol
But how
Pihole only have a option to forward request to another dns
In your opinion is pihole okay then for a basic setup?
Yes, even i have won $15k once, and i only bother playing a few times a year
Erm tv
all dns in house except internet resolvers, ping goes brrrrrrrrrr
Do you need warp/ etc for your tv
Proper router
was about to ask what the pot's were but I would imagine those being relatively low
No but Dot
Dns over tls
I’ll take that as yes. It’s your answer for that stuff
Pihole does that iirc
The weekly stuff is usually $2m-40m
Can’t remember 100%
adguard does for sure
Reminds me i should’ve bought a ticket for the 120 million draw the other day
40mil? that's gotta be rarely?
our state lotto sits around 300mil
That is part of the Scandinavian and European ones though
The national only one is $2-3m every week
but I only really hear of people winning the lower pots like 10mil etc
I should have been doing like monthly lotto
I keep saying I should but i always forget lol
my luck if I ever won I would have to split it with like 30 other people and then after taxes I would end up shelling out more for gas to the big check picture than the big check is actually worth
Picture?
What
you never seen the lotto winners holding those huge checks?
Nope. Illegal here
How can I get a device to advertise himself as a dns server and overide routers default
Because you can’t name winners
We have no tax on lottery winnings
You have to configure it either device by device or on the router to issue it as the dns
Start by understanding basic networking
I can't Access the router interface lol
I don't have an environment to test to my own desire
Hope I have one lol
I just Wana learn with making router changes
Then individual configuration is how it goes
True
Lucky is I only locked the admin panel
Legacy network equipment for learning can be had for spare change
Nice!
I can help.
Step 1 rent a steamroller
Step 2 take all your raspberry pi and machines with less than 1TB ram outide
Step 3 run steamroller over them all
But u can't just buy a tons of equipment to emulate pon
Atx can
If in doubt, get more servers
After this kidnapping they made it so winners stay anonymous here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Graeme_Thorne
Graeme Thorne was an Australian child who was kidnapped and murdered in 1960 for part of the money that his parents, Bazil and Freda, had won in an Opera House lottery. The crime, regarded as one of the most infamous in Australia's history, caused massive shock at the time and attracted huge public attention, and was the country's first well kno...
Good enough to learn basic L2 and more
I wish that was a thing here. I need a network rack first
I ended up making my own
Funktionsfähig
Then a close friend got rid of his 24U rack
Guess how many U my rack is
I wasn't pleased
I don't need to learn this
I just want to make a exact replica of my home network so I can make a network to mess up and know what I can't do
4
So I ended up now with 10U for printer and 14U of space, and because I have a supermicro fetish, most of it is occupied, but not yet in service
Almost
Look on eBay then. But also the principles are the same for both
That is the wrong approach
As the ISP infrastructure doesn't matter
Ignore the pile of nucs
I can't just setup a l7 switch just to emulate my home network right
U know it costs much
u can, you just dont want to
One is the first gen 3217U, the other I was given for free!
I feel you’re a rack stealing raccoon rather than a doormat stealing one @last cedar
NUC6i5
Well that’s tech. It’s not cheap
Hello Michelle

Is it a tape robot below the ups?
I think I can start off with a rpi running router software and acting as a ap
And make my network bigger one by one
No
Just no
Yes
Use a proper AP not a rbp
You no longer have anxiety inducing hard drives sitting on stuff at least
So first I need to buy a l7 switch to connect to my ap
No
And your 520 has all the disk bays. It is so beautiful
You don't need anything above L2 for your switches tbh
Hey atx & Michelle where best place to get nice networking gear. Also where should I store a network rack without pissing off housemate or partner lol
Racks seem huge
At work?
Mine is in my computer room. You need a computer room
need
Hmm if I buy a l2 switch and make a rpi cluster using it
Is it called learning networks?
Or no
Once housemate moves out I have a spare room for that
It’s called hell

Ok what should I do first @umbral cliff
Awesome! Budget for the heat and electric use.
I just traul ebay /local auction sites.i know what my upgrades are, so keep an eye out. Want to move router to lower power, and main server to ddr4 ideally, but that isn't free
y‘all with your racks
You'd love the EL300 @dusky plank
is that the nsfw? ok i should get one
Have you tidied up?
I use it as my opnsense box right now
nope. they both run a dozen different containers
nope. its my electroboom room, always gets messy either way
Electro BOOOOOM
Oh ok
Do you recomend that I cluster two rasp zero
lol no
Or run them separately
Yeah I’m pretending electrical isn’t a thing I have to pay lol
don‘t take my example. start proper like the others told you to. learn networking 😉
I am expecting everything to pull less than 120W including the cameras, so it doesn't have to be insane
Ooh ikea kallax a good idea
Pulling 56W from one UPS atm
Learn networking, start small, expand, learn more, expand, learn more
There is no 1-100
my setup uses 50w, thats the whole infra for the house including switches and stuff
Any electric used is free heat into the house though, heats the room and then recycled into the house via ventillation
in idle ofc. that i7 can go up 120w
So it pays to use as little power as possible, and recycle the heat
Hmm so how should I start my network
The only place to put things is my room and I can't extend Ethernet from my PC next to my dining room to my room
- Get a switch
- Integrate it and play with it
- ???
- Profit
Then
Get a random laptop or minicomputer with two network cards, install opnsense and play with it
Then bridge the ISP hardware
That would be pretty much what I did in 1998
And I was 14
My room is far from my router
Get a long Ethernet cable
Plus I can't modify the house or put long cable on the floor
Could I just have a machine connect to wifi and proxy the Ethernet traffic from my network through it
yes you can
Run a cable alongside the floor/ doorways? Tucked out of the way too
but you need networking experience 🤓 and wifi is shite
Parents will be really excited by that
10/100 isn't great unless it is for labs
dude that el300 is a thousand money
It is
Just Wana make a small network lab
My room is not big either
im not going to buy a 1000€ firewall, did you see my cheap ass setup?
that lenovo was 25€
Ermmmm
Gonna make some sacrifice
This sounds horrible
Do you need the usb to Ethernet? Didn’t you say you have a desktop
I have one but I can't carry it into my room
https://youtu.be/FaSG1ux5miA frighteningly I share this experience 😂

that guy installed a fake version of homeassistant earlier. dont be like him
A fake version??
Well I thought it was accurate to n a few things, some persons, same 4-5 ppl actually helped me with stuff over the years, and everyone that got something working is overly smug about it 🙂 at least it was a giggle
Erm
Jesus wtf
exactly
A fake HA
Holy moly
Why not just run docker on windows if you wanna stick with windows
yeah, why follow official links when you can have the china version
youtubers be doing youtuber things
Given the yandex links I say Russian
Is raspberry pi 1 a real thing
I found this
thats not a 1
Why do you have to use that app? Can’t you use something more legit
My mom only uses this store app
The pic looks like a rpi 4b
Can’t order off the website?
Can but hard to pursuade her to buy
I really want this thing
@umbral cliff
Raspberry zero 2w is hardly overpriced atm
Yeah but hass will not work on it I think?
It will but not more than that, too less ram
And HA on sd is not a great idea too
Maybe second hand buying is an option
Then you could get some used hardware locally, thats cheap but sufficient
U could enable USB boot by flashing new firmware
Also ewww Norwegians
eww a norwegian disliker
😂

Local FB page post from today. @last cedar ‘s cousin
- Consistency since I'm already using tasmota on 60+ devices
- More configuration ability (for example, on-device automations which are very handy)
- Tasmota device groups which are awesome. Easy way to link a smart switch with smart bulbs, relays, etc. It's so fast you'd think it's hardwired
Done completely? As in no more CORE no more SCALE? Curious what you switched too. I'm going to continue using docker-compose until they break it on SCALE and probably switch to straight Debian at that point... If there's still ppl using my community plugin I might switch back to CORE but using Docker now, I'm getting spoiled 🤣
It is so cute! Omg. I need at least 23
You think they will remove docker compose?
I hope not but if they switch from using docker a s Kubernetes back-end, it's possible.
Using docker-compose is considered a "hack" on SCALE as it is
And scale is also a bit janky
Kinda interesting. I don't really feel super 100% comfortable with debian, but I have 4 test dockers working and stable
ATM SCALE is working perfectly for me, with docker-compose and macvlan
I run Linux on my daily so not much of a jump for me to switch
Pure Debian, and proper kvm support ;-)
Clean!
Mmm, I am definately not in that position. I need to replace my old freenas core install. Would be nice to be like all the cool kids and go with zol.
Been playing with debian after @clear ferry recommended I played, but I am yet to buils the nas part.
And tbh, finding files etc is super janky IMO, and when you do make a conf or yaml you end up with the wrong permissions and can't write to the foler and stuff, very frustrating. But it does actually run
"clean" :P
I think, on my daily comp I'm still using the same samba config from 2008, when I first switch to Linux
It was great to be back on Debian after 5 years of truenas
My changes persist
I can do whatever I want
still using zfs?
Yes
5sec import after installing
Then just changing some mount points
And removing 6000 snapshots that truenas had forgotten to remove
Didn't understand why my zfs list was so slow
Is zfs easy to install on Debian? I use it in another Linux distro (everybody loves to say they run 😉) and it's stupid easy
Yes
It is built in afaik, so it should be easy
nice... /rethinks life's decisions
You need to install it
It isn't mainline kernel @last cedar
Because Linus doesn't trust the see you next Tuesday Larry Ellison
Just found the stack of DC access cards I haven't returned yet
I keep one hotel key from every work trip I take... Here's the last four years of my life
I just saw this on github from the main TrueCharts developer
Anyway, docker-compose on the host is being more actively disabled next release anyway (and replaced by another alternative)
Looks like Debian or a switch back to CORE may be happening sooner than I thought...
Debian baby
I'm thinking I agree
Yes... that about sums it up 🤣
atxbyea -- On your Debian box, do you have root on zfs, or just using it to store data?
I made my zpools back on FreeNAS 11.0, I wonder if there are any weird flags I'll have to contend with
day 1 of HA redo wasn't too bad. I only had one light stay on when I tried to go to sleep.
'fixing that now
Docker compose v2 ….
Go look it up, the setup is different
You're saying that's the proposed replacement on scale?
Ah true nass bullshit
I thought they were just making kubernetes pod to run compose
Lol what?
They probably won't expose kubectl going forward either
Yea, I saw a hint that might be happening... Don't take my word, I've not kept up well
For scaling across nodes… they better not be using docker
I wonder why the change
No TrueNAS is using kubernetes... but I want to use docker-compose
Because k8s is more enterprise friendly
I know k3s uses a lot less resources and longhorn is nice
In regards to sla and scaling
For n00bs yes
And on underpowered hardware
TrueNAS CORE seems to be the "home" use version now, while SCALE if for enterprise
Core is definitely the enterprise high availability version
Scale is for the modern customers
Neither is home tbh, but enthusiast rather
I thought TN CORE worked great at home... My biggest reason to switch away from CORE was having to compile the platform.io toolchains for esphome.
It works great, but for regular users... They hardly understand how zfs works nor use any middleware functions
True
Well this is at least promising...
Hence it's time to disable the binary by default, to make clear it's not an included feature of TrueNAS SCALE, while still allowing advanced users to enable it on purpose.

Am I the only one who thinks a NAS should only be a NAS?
I run things on my NAS that actually use the storage in the NAS - Crashplan for backup, Transmission for downloading
Channels DVR for TV recording
MariaDB for a centralized database
My homeserver/nas is the always on system with good storage and some cpu/mem headroom
my nas does torrents/plex with docker
yes
Well besides backups
I guess I’m the only one who uses a NAS as a NAS and then uses a server
the less devices you have running, the less power you waste
my NAS would be using 0 resources 99% of the time if I didn't have some other jazz running on it. I bought my NAS with the intention of using it for media though. My NAS isn't used a whole lot outside of media.
I have jackett, sonarr, radarr, rutorrent, and plex. All of my non media related server stuff are on other machines.
it still just sits at 3% CPU until someone uses it
I am in this picture and I don't like it
If there are unused resources then might as well do something with it 😄
Storage as storage is very old thinking, even in enterprise most storage systems have different services the last decade
Hyperconverging has been a thing for a decade or more already
at least the tape matches the wall color, I guess
Also, what freaks buy twisted pair cabling in OM2 orange
I hope that is from the internet 🤞🏻
great deal on tape
hmm, where have i seen that jank before
given the fritzbox, power plugs and dsl it could potentially be from patrex
and it even looks worse than my trash setup
the bits don't care
Sadly i do not have ethernetcables to my other rooms
whats that poe injector even doing? just hangin around
Hot standby.
I have a couple raspis on hot standby. Like OMV replaced with a NAS….Pi just sitting there waiting for it’s next task. Huge FOMO. 🤣
Hot standby, what is this, the strange datacenters of the 00s
I have a customer who has had a hot standby site since 2006
He still hasn't used it

Why the power board taped below but every plug covered😂
Ok I get it, since you have so many you want to keep everything under the same umbrella but to be fair, the stock firmware does all of that as well.
hi all, i’m totally new to HA but very interested in exploring HA. i have a simple question that is, if HA crashed, will the automation still works? as in thru the Alexa’s skill linked to Smart Life (assuming the smart life and the HA are basically doing the same automation routine). Thanks.
It’s used as usb power brick for the Poe injector that powers the switch
Depends on what you set up. If HA itself is involved in the execution, it being down will prevent the execution.
If you have only used it to set up connections that live in this other series, it’ll work
No idea about the possibilities with Alexa. But I haven’t seen HA crash either
You’ve obviously never read #installation-archived or #general-archived and the Pi SD card failures 🤣
Nope. Pi SD card setup sounds like an self inflicted issue though
It‘s not my setup 😅
Sadly my fritz!box does not even have mounting holes
What is it used for
As Cable modem and router? 😅
I’ve also never heard of a fritzbox tbh
AVM brand consumer router/modem/AP combo boxes
☕️
Still looks better than my old homeprod setup
Well it's a German brand based in Berlin and I'm unsure wether they have an international focus
That being said, I prefer a fritzbox over everything in the consumer market. It has so many options, you can even use it as a SIP server with custom users for calling with your landline using a soft phone on your PC. Or plug-in a storage medium and use it as a NAS...
atxbyea rant incoming
vlan is missing on mostly of them.
they all have very good radios and good components but the fritz software is something you either hate or love, there is no in between
i flashed mine all to openwrt
I didn't find an image for mine. But that might have been an issue with me being stupid
Uhh, saw that quite a few times but never tried; i really like the fritz os so 🤷
ok...
i still dont know if that is really a poe injector, would be 5v only then which makes even less sense. the switch itself has a barrel plug to it so its got to be some kind of cloud key or management for the tplink
Ewww ISP hardware
Surely you have something ISP to terminate your fibre before your equipment. Or do you have a custom NTD
just the ONT box, and I hate it
can't you throw an SFP module in a switch for that?
I've considered it
just haven't bothered investigating yet
I need to put the SFTP server outside my lab
currently I'm backing up my lab inside my lab
that isn't great
😄
Why do you hate it. Surely it just directly translates with nothing in between
Like takes fibre puts out rj45
I thought you backup off site?
not my lab
Get a better box that doesn’t fail
