Anyone do whole home audio and if so can you share what you use to do it? Are you able to stream different sources to different zones

clever mortar
#

Sonos

shadow prawn
#

Snapcast, there are no zones, only groups, but you can stream different sources to different clients

storm canyon
# clever mortar Sonos

Yeah I was looking at Sonos, are you using it with wireless option, so no need to get the house pre wired with speaker wire

clever mortar
#

I've only got their speakers, not their amps

#

(shortly to include some Symfonisk speakers)

storm canyon
#

And with their speakers are you able to play different sources in different rooms?

orchid rose
#

That's a good question to bring up. It works with Chromecast, which is what I use

storm canyon
#

Are you saying the Sonos works with Chromecast? So then you can use things like spotify or youtube music etc...? New to this audio world

#

I only asked here in the Home Assistant Discord because I knew this place was full of folks who do alot of DIY Automation etc...

orchid rose
#

No I mean I use Chromecast devices for multiroom audio and they support different "zones" or groups as Google calls them playing different sources at the same time

storm canyon
#

hmmmmm interesting

orchid rose
#

I suspect Sonos is similar, but I haven't used it myself

storm canyon
#

Similar but certainly more expensive I think

orchid rose
#

Not necessarily and you often pay for what yo get. Like tinkerer said there's also some Ikea stuff that are based on Sonos

storm canyon
#

What are the speakers that you use Mr. K?

#

Are they wired throughout the house?

#

To get 2 rooms pre wired for audio while doing my home build it is about 250.00 so for 8 rooms that is 1k, then would need amps and speakers and multizone connection of some type or other, not even sure all that would need to be purchased after wires are run

orchid rose
#

I have my home theater (5.1) setup connected to a Chromecast, my google assistant devices (mini, display, and some JBL speaker) and my PC speaker (chromecast audio) currently. Nothing fancy

storm canyon
#

So I am thinking that with sonos speakers in every room they are like 219.00 for the Sonos 1, I think it would still be cheaper than a wired system

#

aaaaah so you stream from your 5.1 to other speakers throughout the house is what you are saying?

shadow prawn
#

no

orchid rose
#

No, the other way around

#

I can stream most things to my 5.1 speakers, my google assistant devices (they are all speakers after all) or my PC speakers. Separately or syncced

Luckily, the revocation only applies to certs issued with an obscure challenge method that's only used by large web hosts with virtual servers on the same IP. If you get your certs from certbot, or the Let's Encrypt add-on for Home Assistant, you're good to go since neither of those tools support the obscure challenge method. ;)

edgy dragon
#

This maybe a stupid question. I see a lot of aim of HA is to keep data local, use as little dependency on cloud services as possible.
However, I then see that many of the HA users and community are using such devices as Amazon Alexa and Google Home, which as far as I know send any data from HA to their respective cloud services.
What am I missing?
Does the HA integration for things like Google and Amazon media player not rely on these cloud services?
Does doing a voice query using these devices and HA not send that query through the Amazon or Google servers?
Hopefully I am mistaken.

forest edge
#

Integrating cloud based devices into HA doesn't mean convert to local only. In the case of google and alexa the integration just ties into the api both platforms supply but all the data is still flowing the same it was even if you never integrated them

#

as much as we would all like for companies to make their products have at least a local only option, sad truth is many don't and won't and in some cases where there is no local option alternative people have no choice but to use it as it is

dusky plank
#

almond is a alternative, works local, is free to get

orchid rose
#

There are many types of HA users. Some are hell-bent on privacy, which also means not using services like Alexa or Google Assistant, while others, like myself, are more interested in the convenience of combining multiple platforms

looks like I might have a problem with my non-HA container entry script. When the container was built it copies data to a directory inside the container and then executes the script in the container. I have tried to map this to an external volume, but guessing I stuffed that up.
''' volumes:
- /home/pi/ovpn:/data/vpn
- /home/pi/ovpn/data/scripts/entry.sh:/data/scripts/entry.sh ro
'''
so am I on correct here?

clear ferry
#

Don't map files map directories, mapping files is known to be meh, especially if the file doesn't exist to begin with

proven spruce
#

its indeed very meh

strange crag
#

well it executes the one inside the container - I need to be able to edit it outside the container

clear ferry
#

That is how containers work

#

Still map the directory

#

Not the file

strange crag
#

but the contents of that directory in the container dont appear in the mapped volume. So how do I get access to the file ( the container wont stay up)

clear ferry
#

Create the file

#

Map the directory

strange crag
#

done and done - but it still executes the one in the container

#

unless I stuffed up the above mappings

clear ferry
#

That sounds like wrong mapping

#

You are probably mapping a directory it creates instead of the actual file

#

So you have a directory call entry.sh in the container next to a file called entry.sh

strange crag
#

are you able to tell me if those mappings are correct and point to the same spot relatively?

#

nope i dont have a directory called entry.sh

clear ferry
#

Then it should work, but alas it doesn't

strange crag
#

then I am stuck and dont know how to proceeed

clear ferry
#

Create any file in the folder you are mapping

#

Then see if it appears inside the container

#

If it doesn't

#

You done something wrong boy

strange crag
#

I cant see inside the container - it starts up and quits within 2 seconds

dusky plank
#

command: sleep 600

strange crag
#

the entry.sh is the entry point to the container - so thats the file it executes and its very long (copied down from github) and trying to put breakpoints in it to figure out what is happening, but finding it difficult

#

where do I pu command:sleep 600? in docker-compose file?

dusky plank
#

you can change entrypoints to whatever you like

#

yes, you put it in docker-compose

strange crag
#

kewl - how!?

dusky plank
#

not sure if its the right syntax let me check

#

ok entrypoint should get you there, depends on how the image is built with command:

#

entrypoint: [ "sleep", "600" ]

you want to read about something funny tho, you should look up what books were banned from schools, which ones that were banned, then returned then banned again lol

umbral cliff

#

they would be deemed inappropriate for school teachings

they weren't like history books but more books you would be assigned to read

Only requests to ban some books (like one where a 26 year old seduces a 16 year old - bookstores were already pulling it at the time anyway)

I work for a company that develops an engine and visual scripting environment called Fabella.

In essence, Fabella allows you to develop interactive audio content with voice input in a graphical and intuitive way. It integrates very well with synthetic voices which makes it really useful for dynamic content.

Fabella deploys to multiple platforms including Google Assistant and Alexa, and It has been used by us internally to develop several audio games released on both the Alexa and Google Assistant platforms. But as it can do web requests and run JavaScript, I think it would be really interesting to see what this community can do with it, maybe even completely unrelated to games.

We are currently in beta and looking for more people to test and give feedback on our product. You can test the product for free, for 1 month.

strange crag

very impressive! looks like electric vehicles are nearly there. Wonder what the price is for the car and the price to replace the battery?

#

Nearly there meaning that the car is ready, but what if I put a heavy trailer on it, whats the range then? will it blow up due to the extra current required for the load?

forest edge
#

been curious what the range numbers on the ev ford truck hauling loads will be once they come out.

finite atlas
#

its not all just about how many miles you can do with a single charge, its also about how many miles the battery lasts
you can charge lithium batteries up to 4.4v and have an extra 30% more capacity / range , but also quarter the cycle life of those batteries

#

and by throwing out the liquid cooling and reinforcements of those tesla batteries, you can easily put 30% more batteries into the same size
doing both together, will make a 100kWh Tesla into a 170kWh where 750 miles are realistic

Realistically, I want an electric car now. An ID4 or a Enyaq would be fine (although I would really want a V90 like fully electric car really)

#

I don't travel enough to worry about the range, and can charge at home

#

But a lease on one is like 1/4 of my wage after tax

#

Buying outright would be 60% of what my house cost, for base model

#

So not really realistic either way

strange crag
#

I have been saying that for the city they are perfect, but not for country since the range isnt there - or the charge stations. But the car above is good unless it dies in the arse when you put a horse float behind it or it costs an arm and a leg.

tidal bronze
#

Dubstep and/or chill-step

orchid rose

I don't approve of dissing chill-step

clear ferry
#

Give me house any time of the day

clear ferry
#

No atmos

orchid rose

clear ferry
#

Yes

clear ferry
tidal bronze
#

Zimmer I would force DTS X if you don't have ATMOS

orchid rose
#

Really? With the overhead nerd stuff and everything?

#

(I'd install those in a heartbeat btw if I didn't leave in a rental)

tidal bronze
#

ATMOS is life changing 🙂

orchid rose
#

I just thought atx was more oldschool than that

last cedar
clear ferry
#

Oh no, I don't have DTS x

orchid rose
#

that is quite oldschool indeed 😂

clear ferry
#

Just regular dts

proven spruce
#

My main living room is 5.0 and my upstairs living room is 2.0 with some nice schnell e-5s

orchid rose
#

Quad, you're alone in this it seems. Just be glad we all don't use soundbars

tidal bronze
#

LMAO.

#

No soundbars. What a POS is that.

orchid rose
#

clear ferry

I bought the schnells for $100 5 years ago

tidal bronze
#

Nopes

clear ferry
#

proven spruce
#

POS that appeases the cable hater and saves a lot of space in the room

#

the cable hater being the wife

tidal bronze
#

No cables here. All equipment is in the garage, nothing but TV and Speakers in rooms.

orchid rose
#

It can be done but it takes a lot of work

tidal bronze
#

I agree.

proven spruce
#

clear ferry
#

Only in brick Europe

#

The Scandinavians laugh in wood houses

proven spruce

orchid rose

I run 7.4.4 for ATMOS

orchid rose
#

Are you sure that's enough of speakers?

tidal bronze
#

LMAO

#

REW + loads of time.

proven spruce
#

WHAT! no floor speakers?

tidal bronze
#

Or and 6 bass shakers in the chairs

orchid rose
#

What if the plane flies under your seats?

tidal bronze
#

Mucho problemo

orchid rose
#

and by plane I mean the plane in that one demo that actually supports any of this crap 😛

tidal bronze
#

ATMOS was eye opening but tactile transducers gave it a whole new meaning. Under 40hz is simply crazy

shadow prawn
#

I‘m a fan of the good old stereo triangle

orchid rose
#

Honestly Atmos is pretty nice, but I'd expect it to be similar to 5.1 that it's seldom used to its potential

#

Stereo vs mono is just huge, while everything since has been rather minor

tidal bronze
#

Most of them call ATMOS but not mastered properly. But when come across the right track it's just amazing.

#

I would recommend bass shakers for anyone. '
