Veeam also replicates to my NAS, but backing up to a local disk first makes the network backup a fuck-ton quicker

It can compress everything, deduplicate it, and perform rollups locally, then just sync the diffs to the NAS

If I back up directly to the NAS over gigabit ethernet, backups take 5x longer to complete. lol

what you want is an internal hot swap in 5.25" bay. They were quite common a few years back, but probably went out of production, so you would need to look for people with old stock. Then back that overnight (or whenever you sleep lol) and pull it out and park it on the shelf the next day.
