oh i thought you meant the cheap cheap ones lol
That is cheap. It's a $60 case xD
you should just invest in one of those slim external drives and be done with it
That doesn't solve the backup drive situation
that one i linked above was so thin lol
external drive bay?
I actually use an extrnal bay on my dell to backup my media
it's usb3
only gets written to once on mondays over night
shuts its down to low power mode, it's super nice
i actually got lucky that this pos dell mb supported pci2.0 so i could add a usb3 card to it
if it hadn't this pc would be so much more usless lol
Leaving one of these on my desk 24x7 seems like a pretty big downgrade from a legit hot-swap bay, if I'm being honest...
https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-External-Docking-Supports-DS-UTC1/dp/B07B3S5FSF
The Sabrent DS-UTC1 SATA Docking Station supports the direct insertion of Desktop 2.5"/3.5" SATA Hard Drives. It is a caseless solution that makes swapping hard drives easier than ever before. Plus, now you can take advantage of the lightening speed of USB 3.1 to quickly transfer files up to 10 G...
they make diffrent ones, but as for on the desk.. i mean if you actually swap it.. it would be nice on the desk..
I swap it once a month
then yea that would be way nicer than in the bay
Would it? it'd take up desk space for 29 out of every 30 days...
I like it just being an internal bay device
it's also another external device that needs a power brick. I'm honestly out of plugs over here
it just makes everything else messier...
yea that be true
although if you just wanted it for ssd
you don't need to get one with an extrneal power supply
they can be powered through the usb port
I'm using it as a local backup target (Veeam full system image). Needs to be about 4TB minimum
A 2.5" SSD in that capacity would be... expensive...
thought you said 3.5" bay? you using the small hdd's?
Veeam also replicates to my NAS, but backing up to a local disk first makes the network backup a fuck-ton quicker
It can compress everything, deduplicate it, and perform rollups locally, then just sync the diffs to the NAS
If I back up directly to the NAS over gigabit ethernet, backups take 5x longer to complete. lol
i've seen 3.5 hdd hot swap for 5.25 bays but not for 3.5"
It's a 5.25" bay device for 3.5" drives
oh i see, i gots confused
see using the same spec for everything makes shit confusing lol
well then yea you would need an extrnal power
It's also not an ugly looking 5.25" bay device, so not having a door wouldn't be the end of the world
they make diffrent ones
i've seen all kinds of styles
you should get the bequiet case and call it a day
Probably. It's one of the nicer cases that still has the bays I want
Though I still say these new shallow cases should consider adding basement 5.25" bays as an option
It would literally be a case of the drive bays following the PSU from the top to the bottom of the case
pretty sure at one point you won't find a single case unless it was server intended that will have a bay
not to mention pc's continue to shrink lol
They do make external 5.25" enclosures, for when that day comes
yea, they make nicer looking ones then that tho lol
"We arbitrarily decided you should have more clutter outside your PC and fewer features. Enjoy"
i wouldn't say fewer, it just makes it more universal
Same shit with smartphones. Everything peaked in 2014
Removing an entire type of drive bay counts as a removed feature in my book
once you buy an external dvd drive you can continue to use that from pc to pc etc
but if you buy a pc with an internal one then get a case with no bays then you have ewaste lol
I already have an internal one that has gone from PC-to-PC since about 2014. lol
Pretty sure that's when I picked up this BR drive
they must make them better these days, cause the older ones like what I have actually died over time
i think the ones i ripped out of my dell still work but the ones i have that are older than that have issues
lol even my "scribe" one
Oh damn, it's older than I thought. Purchased in 2011:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003XIM3QK
That's when I built my Sandybridge / Z68 system
you know you could still just do a network drive
Network optical drives don't work well at all
i meant the backing up one
The issue with backing up over the network (without backing up locally first) is it slows things down pretty drastically
And then I don't have a cold copy
?
Which is the more important part, honestly
network drive is no diffrent than one plugged in
I rotate through three 8TB backup disks, swapping them out at the end of the month
The two unplugged drives are "cold" storage
I could get my entire network crypto-virused, and those will be fine
The files on the NAS that are available hot? Who knows.
still don't get how it's any diffrent
because the files on my NAS can get encrypted, the files on an unplugged drive can't
you can set up a network drive with all the same encyption
The concern is crypto viruses, like I said
If I get my shit cryptoed, and it infects my NAS, and I don't have an offline backup, I'm just fucked...
The offline backup also serves as the 3rd copy, because you don't actually have a backup unless the data is in at least 3 places
The drives become cold once they're rotated out
They sit on a shelf and wait to be rotated back in at the end of the month
This is a super standard backup strategy. Local backup, network backup, offline backup
guess i can't wrap my head around what your saying, I just don't see the difference between a an internal/external vs network drive in terms of vulnerability
You don't see the difference between files in an online network share vs. files in a hard disk that is physically unplugged and sitting on a shelf?
The former is more vulnerable than the latter, should my network get popped
i don't see the diffrence between a network swap and an internal for a drive you swap once a month
infinitely more vulnerable
Putting the hot swap bay in a different computer still means I need a case that has 5.25" bays. lol
And then we get the slowdown issue again, because it'll be limited to gigabit..
yea but who cares about speed
I'm not going to upgrade to a system that is objectively worse
this gets done over night
Why the hell would I throw hundreds of dollars at an "upgrade", and hundreds more on external enclosures, only to wind up with a worse experience? lol
makes zero sense
just throwing options and i don't agree with worse experince at all
It will literally be slower and require more devices on/around my desk
How is that not worse?
it dosen't need to be anywhere near your desk
and it's not slower, hdd's have a finite write speed
Aight, it still increases the complexity of the solution massively, and I have to spend money to get back any semblance of the lost functionality
Not selling me on it...
Yeah, gigabit is actually a lot slower than a local HDD...
I can hit 300 MB/s write speeds on a 8TB hard disk (backups are sequential, HDDs love that)
and thats slower than gigabit?
Gigabit is about 120 MB/s (125 MB/s theoretical max)
Yeah, now we're going to put new network switches into the mix, cool...
Why is this better than a simple internal hot swap bay connected to a 6 Gbps SATA interface?
i already told you to get the bequiet
I can throw additional option in the mix
don't be a hater
still laughing at my brain fart for not clicking the 1024 to g in my head
what you want is an internal hot swap in 5.25" bay. They were quite common a few years back, but probably went out of production, so you would need to look for people with old stock. Then back that overnight (or whenever you sleep lol) and pull it out and park it on the shelf the next day.
I already have the hot swap bay (linked above). The issue is most new cases don't have 5.25" bays anymore
ahh sorry
needs a dedicated server box just for those chores instead of trying to pack it into a styleish main pc case
The one I bought is still for sale. $16 from Orico. lol
Seems like they still make them
what is wrong with the case you already have?
Seems weird to require an entire second system just because I want to run backups without having an external USB device flopping around...
It'll become a non-issue when 4TB USB flash drives are common/affordable, I suppose
Not too much longer before that happens
yea but the common practice is usually network backup right? to a nas etc etc, not to have those attached directly to your pc
I replicate my backups to a NAS, yes
I know you do 3 locations
Because it means a shit-ton less disk thrashing on the NAS than running the backups directly to the NAS
it just seems overkill to me
unless your storing the cure for cancer or who killed jfk
Backing up to a locally-attached disk seems like overkill to you because it's in an internal hot-swap bay rather than plugged into a USB port?
it's your pickyness, you want this kind of case but it dosen't have the bays, you don't want this external thing cause it takes up desk space and now network transfering ios too slow for a backup..
yes, it seems overkill to me
It's a totally standard backup methodology...
Local disk, network disk, offline disk
which is fine
Well thinking outside the box - how many drives are sitting on the shelf? If you put them all into the existing box , but put a switch in the power leads then you could effectively have internal backups with removable drives and you would save yourself some shelf space!
Yeah, the BeQuiet is alright, it's just... not much of a change from my current case
cause you kind of locked yourself into a path
I didn't think it'd be this hard to find 5.25" bays in 2022. lol
which is what i was talking about and why I threw out ideas that all got shot down lol
Nice idea, though I keep the offline backups in a fire-proof safe with tax returns / birth certificates / bonds / etc.
I would care less about the slower transfer speeds over network but that's just me
i'm not transfer terabytes of data every night
ahh yes - forgot about the fireproof bit
@forest edge It's a combination of the slower transfer speeds AND the excessive disk thrashing. Taking the incremental is alright, but performing the subsequent rollup, over network, is painful. NAS thrashes for hours.
must be alot of photos of someone's dog
color me curious for these secret things you need to preserve
It's just how rollups work. Veeam rolls the oldest incremental into the full backup, and then re-dedups the set.
you could just clean out shit too
This creates a "synthetic full", which avoids having to run a new complete full, which would take 8+ hours
ar he could get a better backup tool?
I'm using Veeam. Industry standard...
atx is really the only allowed person here to horde cause his ancient equipment needs to run constantly or it dies
nahaha
i run omv i am the cheese
That ^
if someone wants to steal my ball sack pictures more power to them
no compression, no encryption, and no version history. lol
it can save it with dates!
i get email after the sync is complete i have written log lol
I love just storing my birth cert in a drawer. If it goes I’ll order another lol
we can get a replacement, it's not easy
it isnt that easy to order another these days
ss card and birth cert is the two hardest things to get a replacement for
Getting my birth certificate updated was hard enough. I don't even want to think about trying to replace it...
It is in australia. You need 100 points of ID (so licence & pasport/ Medicare card/ etc) and just submit a request online. Pay the money get it in the post
updated? did you get reborn? lol
Trans. Name change + got the "M" changed to an "F"
Weird given your SS card is used in everything in life
oh - never considered that - sorry
you don't actually use the card rarely
only in certian situation someone will scan it
yeah, you usually just need the number
My SS card has been lost for decades, but I know the number, so 🤷♀️
I got mugged and had my wallet stolen 😄
or they didn't use too, no idea what they do these days
What’s the point of the card vs just getting the number on a letter then
I'd just gotten a new job (who wanted a scan of my SS card), so it was still in there. Poof, gone...
it serves as hard evidence
so would the letter
although i can't imagine it being terriably hard to replicate an ss card lol
our medicare equivalent is on a plastic card - same as credit cards
healthcare cards come laminated
or whatever that is
not sure if laminated or just the type of paper used
yours isnt very secure if you can just quote the number!
it's stiff plasticly looking
I have business card size ziplocks for things like my auto registration and proof of insurance, because yeah, otherwise, they'll get torn up over a year of being shuffled around in the back of a purse
Laminating is great until it starts to delaminate
I have my ss card and birth cert in a plastic pouch in my file drawer
only ever had to get it out like once in the past 5 years
and that was to deal with a title or something at the dmv
they probably use the same shit auto insurance cards use these days
Don’t get why the USA requires paper copies for that stuff. Rego and insurance can all be stored digitally for the cops to check
AAA doesn't even give you cards anymore. They just have you open the app to use a "virtual card"
Or you can go to the website and get a PDF where you can print a sheet of six paper cards yourself. lol
lol surprised medical insurance cards aren't like that
although old people would not be able to use it
Yeah, the couple times I've been stopped without my registration on-hand, they always just walked away and looked it up on their curser's police computer
Whilst here digital stuff is becoming big. If you have private health insurance here you can tap your phone like Apple Pay to link it to their systems
I just checked and it would be difficult for me to request a birth cert.
How so?
Yeah so weird they require paper stuff then
car insurance you don't need a card
they accept the app stuff
that whats the general auto insurance uses
is an app
I got a licence and and a medicare card, but the other stuff is either email or not relevant.
drivers license you do need, doubt that would ever become an app
Whilst here I don’t need anything but my licence when driving. It’s a condition of registration renewal to have compulsory third party insurance. So if your rego is valid your insurance is there
more of a security issue there
It’s becoming apps here
I don't see it happening here
Apple is bringing digital licences to some states in the USA
we need it for voting and all kinds of shit
So it is happening
but you dont get a copy of that anymore so how do you submit it?
What do you mean by email? If it’s a digital letter you can use that
What do you mean?
where? I just have my doubts at it being accepted by the local goverment etc
it might work for other things, but not for dmv etc
well I did say stuff was email.
so if its email - how do I present that to the BDM to geta cert?
well all be a monkey's uncle.. although that dosen't mean every state will do it thus still forcing you to keep your actual card if you go into one of those states lol
or if you have android
It's getting a bit dated looking (2011), and it's a lot larger than it needs to be for the hardware it has in it.
I would have also said 120mm front intake fans, but I modded it to take 140mm fans + magnetic filters up front 👍
its only a box - as long as it serves the purpose!
and an empty one at that
and it costs a lot for that empty box!
Surely you have a utility statement or a bank statement that can be printed though
no utility statement - but I guess I could get a bank statement printed soemhow
Yeah same here with you being required to carry your physical licence if you travel interstate
All banks will have statements online you can print or just email direct. Or go in a branch and they’ll print it
I doubt clubs would accept the app even in one of those states.. no way to tell if forgery with an app lol
unless apple has some means of verifying said card you scan in
we now have an app to prove we have been double jabbed
They can do it here, the app has a hologram that moves with the phone, so visible when you tilt (and hard to do for the average forger)
It supports tapping the phone to pass the needed details. Presumably there’s an app for each state gov to read that stuff
yea but that dosen't mean apple has verified the card to being legit
Same app also shows the Medicare card and Centrelink shows pension/ healthcare card. Useful stuff
Presumably it’s added by verifying with the state gov
I really doubt they’ll let you make a virtual card without verification
oh then that would be ok if it has that means
Like nsw state gov here requires you to submit 100 points of ID to make their online account, which is then how you get their digital licence (presuming you’re a resident of nsw)
I am not opposed to have that shit on my phone although storing stuff like social security is kind of nerve wrecking
I don't even like to give it out when asked from my bank
and thats the rub - governments letting companies dictate. So you need ot have an apple phone or carry the card. The places that accept it probably also have to have something apple to accept it. More power to apple
sure android will have something as well at some point
but the actual card itself will always be accepted regardless
and is accepted in every state
If it’s just nfc I can’t see why android couldn’t copy it to be honest
for the moment it is accepted
if they ever tried to force people use like apple only that would be a huge shit show lol
agreed - but it may happen
pig may fly too
lol
It does do its job, no doubt about that
case is so big it won't load lol
Enough airflow? 😂
The power your US companies weild over the governments is enormous - even things like the gun lobby
It does now that I've modded it. lol
Removed the top-to-bottom 3.5" drive cage + printed brackets to mount 140mm front intake fans (stock brackets only accepts 120mm front intakes)
You have to admit that tapping your phone to pass licence details is a lot easier than giving your phone to the cops
yea unfortunately money controls all
but that just isn['t here
thats everywhere
not so much here tho
And yes, there are two different size fans on the CPU heatsink... front fan has to be 120mm because it's sitting on top of the RAM
@umbral cliff you probably would still have to give phone to cops so they could check the details
Larger fan = can't close the side panel. lol
Not if it’s just tapping and passing securely. Or a QR code to scan
Honestly if I had a digital licence I would just leave my physical one in the car (to show to cops) and use the digital one to buy alcohol, etc
Noctua NH-D15S
aio is pretty cheap these days
I dont need a licence to buy alcohol lol
I’m lucky enough to still look young enough lol
lol
I've thought about it, but there isn't actually a good place to mount an AIO in this case..
Also for entering bars where they have a bouncer out the front checking everyone
but you are getting a new case...
It has dual 140mm top fan mount points, but there's so little room between the top of the case and the motherboard, you can't put a radiator up there
Fans, yes. Fans + radiator? Nope...
and one will fit on the front in your exsisting case
however if you leave your physical licence in the car and the car gets stolen or broken into - there is the possibility of ID theft
Radiator as an intake is generally a bad idea...
there is 2 120mm fans so I know a raditor will fit there
it works great... at first... then it fills with dust because it's your intake fan. lol
not really
And then all of the heat from your CPU gets dumped back into the case, which is less than ideal
140mm
you could make it exaust from the front
but mine is instake and exhausts out the top
what about water cooling??
I always do radiators as exhaust. Radiator as intake works, but it's always been problematic
Eh you need more than just a licence nowadays to do anything. Anything in person and they’re checking the ID photo top
*too
The restriction of a filter AND a radiator = poor airflow through the radiator, which isn't a problem when it's an exhaust.
And then it requires more cleaning than an exhaust radiator
but you can apply for stuff over the net with just the licence number
Any case with a filter will be like that...
I get dust on the filter, yes
Restriction on top of restriction
Everything I’ve seen requires 2 points of ID, or a certified copy of the ID (which then is verifying the ID then)
I'm already running radiator-rated high static pressure fans on the front of this case to overcome the filters, adding a radiator would be... less than ideal
wtf don't use hepa filters then lol
Notice the dust-free interior, though 👀
if you need 140mm to overcome a filter your filter is whack lol
OK Leapo I have the cooling idea you are going to like 😉 get a fish tank and put in that special watery stuff that is good for electronics and remove all your fans and drop the box in the tank!
@forest edge Actually, smaller fans tend to provide better static pressure. That's why 3x 120mm fans are still common on radiators
thats what it is a mineral oil Thanks
140mm can provide more CFM at lower RPM, but loses on static pressure
I would consider moving to aio over that massive heatsink tho
what is aio?
Trust me, I've considered it. This i5 12600K can push 210 watts if you overclock the snot out of it
ahh - the water cooling
I have it power capped at 190w, which is about all the Noctua can handle
they use to be expensive but coolermaster makes some decent ones that are cheap
these days it's dumb to just not use them cause they cost the same if not cheaper than the tower blocks
If I were up for front-mounting it, I'd throw one of these in there:
https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-aio-elite-280-d-rgb
The EK-AIO Elite 280 D-RGB is an all-in-one liquid cooling solution for your CPU. It offers all the benefits of a water-cooling solution in a compact, easy to install, and maintenance-free design. The EK AIO Elite comes with a universally compatible CPU water-block, along with a pre-filled pump-res combo design for a liquid cooling solution that...
4x 140mm fans in push/pull 👀
Only $90 more expensive than the Noctua heatsink I'm running now. lol
Noctua stuff ain't cheap
ONLY 90 buck lol
It mercifully comes with a fan hub to deal with 4x PWM fans + 1x PWM pump + 5x RGB leads
Break out the zipties for this one
200 for an aio is expensive
like i said coolermaster
these days they are all pretty much rated the same, 5-7 years
It's expensive because EK makes legit open-loop water cooling hardware. It's not a rebranded Asetek cooler.
Asetek is basically patent trolling everyone, and I hate it. Want to build an AIO that has a combination pump + block? Yu have to go through Asetek
i don't care who makes it as long as it works lol
EK got around it by building the pump + reservoir into a block at the end of the radiator
I get that, but also... fuck Asetek
lol
No, experience...
it's not experince they all last the same
I used to run Asetek-based AIO coolers, they all sucked
Notice I said coolers... I was 9 RMAs deep before I gave up and bought an air cooler
Damn things have shit quality control
well the earlier shit yea
they had some good ones and some bad ones
but i'm talking right now
they are all pretty much work the same
I'd rather go with the EK. They do legit water cooling, and it's literally the best performing AIO on the market, so...
jtwo cents, watch him, he'll tell ya
I’ve had 1 AIO cooler die (cooler master) it wasn’t sealed right. Dripped and killed my graphics card. Warranty covered both of them (even though GPU was not purchased from the same store)
Second one no issues at all
like dripped off the bat?
or dripped down the road
Dripped after 6-12 months
crazy
Can we talk about how none of these AIOs have fillports? The EK one does, but almost nobody else has one...
it's an aio, not suppose to have a fill port
They’re not designed to be refilled
And I've had a lot of AIOs come under-filled, so they never stop sounding like a cheap desk fountain
that sound is just air bubbles
you probably had the raditor tipped the wrong way for too long
I just don't see why you wouldn't include a fill port for maintenance down the road
Not including one is anti-right-to-repair
can't refil them cause it's not exactly the same liquid
EK did this thing right 😛
if it has a fill port then it's not an aio
You can refill the EK, and the liquid inside is water and glycol
thats not an aio
It is an AIO... it arrives as a single pre-filled unit, just like other AIOs
They were just nice enough to drill a hole and put a screw-cap on it
Take a look at the link above, it's an AIO for sure
sure they call it something else but it isn't an aio lol
well it's not what an aio is tho
aio is not suppose to be refillable
How is a pre-filled device consisting of a radiator, pump, reservoir, and tubing (all) that comes fully re-assembled (in one) not an all-in-one?
Just because you've dealt with trash anti-consumer AIOs built by patent trolls doesn't mean they can't be built to a higher standard 😛
if you want "higher" standard you move to a tank system
The EK has a tank, it's next to the pump on one end of the radiator
see not aio lol
How it is not an AIO when it's clearly all-in-one?
they just skewed the whole point of what an aio is
so they could call it that
but if it has a tank and is refillable it's not an aio
i see no ntank
It's at the far end where the tubes exit the pump/tank
think tissues - in your country you call them Kleenex, because that is the first or major company that makes them. Ie they define or embody the brand. Same in this case with aio
It is a tank. lol
it's a giant void full of water outside the pump, radiator, or tubing
It's not a large tank, but it is a tank
it's a raditor lol
The pump is attached to the end of the radiator too, you know...
The CPU block is literally just a water block + RGB
someone is trolling
Do you see space for a pump on the radiator either? Because that's where it's at
That block mounted to the end of the radiator (which contains the pump and res) is 28x27x140mm
made in china.
you can't use that in the front anyways
there is a big x for that position
oh wait nm
it was rotated
@subtle pasture you can refill other company AIOs, you just void the warranty. Which if it’s long enough time the warranty is dead (especially in the USA)
Yeah, you can put it at the front, but they want the tubing going down to the bottom of the case
usually by the time you gotta refill it the pump has died lol
Unless you cut it open and added a GPU block
Not common to do with AIOs, but I've seen it a couple times
I see what looks like a fill spot on the radiator
there is no tank and the cpu block is the pump
Heh, guess they paid Asetek a ton of money then
another thing i don't see is pump rated sycles and the fact it's a 5 year and not 7 tells me alot
Usually you're not allowed to do that because it'll infringe on their patents
if it's only 5 it can't be that good
so back to coolermaster
get same rating for much less
I mean, the only competition for EK is from Artic with the (ugly) Liquid Freezer Pro
EK and Arctic make the two best performing AIOs out right now
I kinda have to agree. Yes you can’t repair it but by the time you reach it’s eol you’ll probably think it’s time to upgrade motherboard
And cpu at the same time
Because the socket changes within the life of an AIO
they do make some that are only 3 year
stay away from those
and they make primo 7 year ones
but don't see the point in extra costs
Which CoolerMaster AIO? I'm looking up comparison, an the CoolerMaster Nepton performs worse than my current NH-D15S
The NH-D15 is literally the best air cooler on the market...
It outclasses several AIOs
maybe on paper but come on
Corsair makes nothing that beats it. lol
That's why I was looking aaaaaall the way up the chain at Arctic and EK
on paper companies can say alot of shit
It literally has almost the same surface area as a 280mm radiator
but liquid cooling by nature is going to be better across the board not just during certian cicumstances
I would liquid cool my dell if I could fit the cpu block through a pci opening lol
It depends on your usage case. Water cooling can deal with large heat spikes far better than air cooling
Right, because of the thermal mass of the water
thats what i meant about across the board
So if your workload is mainly sudden intensive cpu cycles then a aio would be better than any air cooler
(Better by heat absorption and also noise)
@forest edge That doesn't help for multi-hour long transcode operations, though
The water will eventually reach steady state
how not?
The additional thermal mass of the water only helps for bursty workloads
For sustained workloads, it's all about radiator surface area and airflow
that not true
i do video encoding on this pc from time to time my temps never break 40c
That doesn't really tell me anything
i dunno what to tell you, the only way your going to know is to compare what you reach now vs what you reach after an aio
I'm aware, but you need a beefy AIO to outclass a $100 air cooler...
Corsair H100i need not apply
for me never breaking 40c during a process like that is something no air cooler pc i ever had could do but then i never had this pc on a air cooler to directly compre
Depends on what CPU you pair it with, and/or your power cap
How many watts you dumping into that cooler?
but again i fall back to my opriginalk statement by nature liquid cooling will always be better
because I have up to 210w to deal with if I remove the power cap
Power as in watts of heat... from the CPU...
What is the rated TDP of your CPU? It sounds like you have a massively over-sized cooler for whatever it is
spec's sheet will tell you what the aio power draw is
I'm not talking about AIO power draw... I'm talking about CPU heat output
How much heat are you actually dumping into your loop?
What's your CPUs TDP?
40c is pretty easy to obtain on a 65w chip. lol
sec, forgot what chip it is
to even look up
125
dumb that cupid forces you to update rather than just starting the current version
You can get your cpu details using task manager
125 isn't bad. NH-D15 is rated for up to 165w, though I'm getting acceptable temps up to about 190w.
this is pissing me off wtf they do to cupid
I don't really care how much power the AIO draws, just how much heat the CPU is dumping into it. lol
you thought what? I had a Celeron?
just get a coolermaster aio and be done with it, stop making excuses lol
I'm not making excuses, I don't want to accidentally downgrade to a worse cooler...
thats not possible
sure it is possible
they have 240 raditors and 120
mine is a 240
and maybe the 120 wouldn't be big enough for some overclocking? not sure
Minimum radiator size is probably going to be 280 so it's at least the same surface area as the D15
lol
Also, that's what fits in the front of the case
Buy one from a store that has a no questions asked return policy, then try it out
Don't underestimate heatpipes man. Heatpipes have greater thermal carrying capacity than water...
They're literally passive phase change cooling
This air cooler is literally better than several liquid coolers...
but won't be better
Like I mentioned earlier, a H100i would be a downgrade. lol
this is what I have ontop of a i7-10700K https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/coolers/cpu-liquid-coolers/masterliquid-ml240l-rgb/
With its matt-black styling, braided cabling and RGB lighting effects, the ML240L RGB is a Cooler Master original design and enables a colorful and great performing entry into liquid cooling. Cool in any color as the RGB options extend to both fan and water block, with six lighting effects for control. Reliability, performance and quiet operatio...
The issue is, I can hit nearly twice as much power draw. lol
so what
12600k is nuts if you turn off the power cap
So the coldplate design needs to not suck
if a 280 raditor will fit the case then you should get that
i don't even know what sizes they make now
lets go look
ok maybe not coolermaster site is loading slow as fuck lol
there you go get the 360 and compare that to your air cooler lol
300 bucks holy hell lol
No doubt the 360 wins. lol
The CoolerMaster MasterLiquid 240 performs a whole 1 degree better than the NH-D15. lol
not sure i care for that mirror look tho
Trying to find a comparison with the 280
1 degree? at idle?
Under load
here we go a 360 that is only 130 bucks
what a steal!
i can't fit a 360 in my case
What exactly was wrong with the EK or Arctic AIOs?
I can't fit a 360 either. lol
I can fit a 360 in the front
So what’s the price difference
nope nm just 240
The MasterLiquid 240 is the same price as the NH-D15, they're both $100
240 wouldn't be worth it, need to go bigger than that
280 was 80 bucks
and the 240 is 90
should probably look at the pumps rated hours
mines is over 7 years
2 year warrenty, what a joke didn't see that before
The other question is software
Does CoolerMaster require some BS be running at all times?
The RGB will stay off if I tell it to stay off? lol
thye rgb fans are plugged into the board and msi controls that
The pump block itself also has RGB
yea
And some weird infinity mirror crap
depends which model you get
not all have that mirror thing
not sure i like the look of the mirror lol
Plain black would be fine with me.
I also wish they had an option to buy it cheaper with no fans. I already have fans
I have a cooler master, LEDs are on when I tell it to be on from the motherboard. Same control as the MB LEDs
mine are set to show cpu temp in colors lol
don't care for rgb but also didn't want to waste the fact i have rgb so I split the diffrence
that would suck to get a faulty one that leaked after x amount of time and not from the get go
i thought about moving mine to the front from the top for that very reason but not had any issues
Yeaaah, as you can probably tell from my photo earlier, I have all the RGB off in this box. lol
those can be shutoff
not sure if there is software that even comes with the coolermaster aio
Introduction When it comes to liquid cooling, the first name that comes to one’s mind is EK Water Blocks. EK® Water Blocks, the premium liquid cooling manufacturer, bears the name of its founder Edvard König. It all started with the enthusiasm of one man and his ventures with liquid cooling back in 1999. Ever since […]
280 performed worse than the 240...
Honestly, looks like only the 360 is worth buying, going by these numbers
Noctua NH-D15 holding strong there
Literally 2 degrees off from the biggest AIO they tested
I nee dto check if I can fit the NH-D15 in my case
Air cooling strong 💪
alot of brands i never heard of in that list
sure that listing wasn't cherry picked lol
AIOs are just air cooling with extra steps either way
looks to me that ek just took off the shelf open loop system parts and slapped them together to make an aio
why else would they make an aio with a fill port that the consumer isn't suppose to open
Eh, those warranty stickers are unenforceable anyway
I mean, yeah. That's how the factory fill machine works
pretty sure it effects pump life as well when it loses that
It pulls a vacuum, then lets liquid flood the system automatically
So the same policy applies to other AIOs which have what is essentially a fill port
But anyway, the EK 360mm AIO is one of the best performing AIOs on the market, and these guys only saw 2c better load temps at 4.7 GHz, and 4c better load temps at 5.1 GHz, when compared against the Noctua flagship
Going to look for more reviews, but that ain't great
try looking for reviews for the other chips on the board beneath your bemouth lol
that brick has to be blocking airflow to other shit lol
What do you mean, exactly?
well you said it covered the ram earlier
depending on your mb god only knows whats beneath it
If you install a front fan (instead of running with just the center fan), yeah. It hangs over the RAM
The center fan hangs below the heatsink fins and pulls air across the RAM and VRMs
alot of things on a mb need semi decent airflow
Yeah, the D15 provides that, no problem
it sits on more than just the cpu?
oh ok
The center fan hangs down below the fins
Pulls air across the RAM, and blows across the VRMs
id still go aio over that lol
Keeping the RAM and VRMs cool is a bigger problem if you run an AIO, because a pump block doesn't provide airflow at all
huh, it's surprisingly affordable. Now to see if it fits
@glacial knot The Noctua? Check both the NH-D15 and the NH-D15S
The "S" version is generally more compatible with tall RAM and top PCIe slots, as it's offset instead of centered.
I currently have nothing in any pcie slots
The photo above is of the S version
You can see how the non-S version might block the top slot
ew why would you willing go air
I mean, here are results for theCoolerMaster Master Liquid 280
81c when hit with 190w... Which is a nearly identical result to my air cooler...
My power cap is actually set to 190w because I determined that's when it kisses 80c with this Noctua cooler...
Water can be better than air cooling, but it takes a lot to beat a D15
do I hear ryzer card and vertical mount? 🙂
or in my case, if anything it'll be an HBA, which I'll just double sided tape to the drive bay, hehe
Fair. Just letting you know there are two different fitment options
just watched a video on that sucker hitting 100c at 5.2 OC
How many watts?
appreciated. I just have dumb use cases myself 🙂
and no issue with some good hack around that, hehe
NH D15
Yeah, it won't handle 235 watts for long
I usually see 100c and thermal throttling at 216w of load
coolermaster really pushing that subzero variant of the 360
find more benchmarks with that then anything
They put a TEC on it? No thank you...
it did the same oc test at 5.3 with 49c
so it's not exactly a joke lol
the non sub zero variant did it at 87c
that's a huge diffrence
If they're using a TEC module, it's a joke. Yeah, it works, but it's incredibly inefficient.
i dunno, didn't look at specs of it, just keep running across benchmarks using it
You feed power into a TEC. One side gets hot, the other side gets cold (potentially Sub-Zero)
The hot side's temperature is equal the the amount of heat removed from the cold side PLUSS every single watt of electricity being pumped into the TEC
You need to pump 200w into a TEC to move 200w of heat from one side the the other, and then you need to dissipate 400w of heat
So yeah, it works, if you injoy your PC being a literal space heater. Lol
just use an old space heater as radiator. Easy
somehow i doubt you need that kind of cooling regardless
Yeah. I've only been able to hit 216w on this 12600k
doing what? a benchmark?
Keeping that under 80c is challenging
cause i doubt your hitting that on a normal basis
216w while encoding 1080p h.264
So basically a benchmark. Since that’ll be hitting the cores evenly
That's what happens when you force an all-core frequency of 5.1 GHz and then transcode video :P
I actually transcode video semi-regularly
But yeah, that's when I decided I needed to power-cap this thing to 190w
you probably got your room toasty and thus adding to the issue of having an air cooler
It'll stay around 80c, and it'll stay at about 4.8 GHz on all cores while power throttled to 190
it's a feedback loop, your pc heats the room thus making your pc hotter and the cycle repeats
by the time your video is done it's 130f in the room and your sweating like a mule
go h265 then 🙂
H265 actually doesn't hit as hard. It'll only draw about 180w and stay un-throttled the entire time
i don't think I ever really looked at how hard the encodes hit the CPU. I just remember that h265 takes ages
if my case lights don't turn red i don't even look
it's a massive pet peeve of mine to see some influencer get a care package of a game or brand or something where you know it's something some kid would kill for yet they send these influencers these things for free
attention & money > genuine care about customers
making & selling games isnt a nieche thing anymore
Though if they do competitions to give it away that often limits it to the USA only. So the rest of the world loses interest
Not gonna pay attention to a game you can’t win
thats where gamestop came out as very usefull, lots of stores around the world
but companys were greedy and made their own online stores to cash in on the profit
Still is a lot of effort to do giveaways around the world. Every state/ country has different laws on that stuff
the influencers who do the global giveaways to pass on the products they are given are more favored in my opinion
but many fo them literally horde this shit
granted these products are given to them at the cost of advertisement budget (few videos actually explain the whole process) but still when I see people get shit they don't need/already have/can easily afford it themselves it just urks me
gpu shortage and the influencer has shelves and shelves of gpu's behind them. collectable game merchandise one of a kind stuff to someone who dosen't even play the fucking game cept this one time on camera
I bet if they could sell the stuff (which i am not sure if they can or can't, but thinking no) they would do it in a heartbeat so instead they just horde it
sometimes those youtubers need the gpus tho, benchmarks n stuff or its just empty boxes already
Re endcoding h265. Can't you do it on the quicksync part of the cpu now, so it won't load it super much. I know my NUC6 can decode h265 on the GPU part of the CPU, but not sure about the encoding bit
which cpu do you have?
Leapo was running a gen 12
12600K, so it should have quicksync, the F don't have the GPU part
Could also be in efficient software not making most of the CPU
yeah
I bet a lot have empty (possibly fake) boxes up just so it looks like they’re fancier than they actually are
maybe those that are way in the back and are blurry but anything up close would easily be spotted if fake lol
thats the purpose of decoration, yes
It’s not that hard to make decent boxes that are good looking over 1080p compressed YT
maybe
Hey Leapo if you live in one of those countries with snow and ice - you could run a pipe out there from your computer lol
the lower end youtubers i see that display gpu's are displaying boxes of older cards
and those you don't need to fake
leapo is in California and running a pipe outside to 26c would be a waste lol
it's still a waste
Of course it is. Doesn’t stop it being a fun idea lol

Can you get an incredible water cooling system with $50 and your kitchen sink? It may sound like a super dumb idea, but we thought it was worth a try...
Buy water cooling parts on...
you are bound to a couple profiles with the hardware accells, software can be better than that
software is such shit tho
one thing I find ironic about suburb broadband here is the fact that when fewer people use the same carrier the line quality is improved dramatically which makes sense etc.. but people are so uneducated that when they saturate a carrier they start to bail to a different one essentially clearing up the issue that made them bail to begin with
yeah, but it will even itself out over time.
no it teeter totters
we only have two options in this neighborhood
so every few years the same group of people switch back and forth lol
for the exact same reasons lol
i know this because nextdoor is huge here
Morning
It is 10 already!
fired up disc too late 😛 already prepping work for next week
After I moved my system into a new case, the PC no longer wakes up properly from sleep. With keyboard, the keys just light up, but the PC won't fully turn on and with wake-on-lan it's similar, some lights turn on but not the whole system
After pressing the power button it wakes up perfectly fine, wtf
What is this, sleep? Nonsense
Sounds like a bios issue / power state of CPU issue though
but why would it appear after moving to a different case? Nothing else changed
😁
But seriously, if anything I would look at ground
Yeah that could be it
I have no other good answers unless you did upgrades
just took two hard drives off and swapped the PSU fan
and added case fans, but I doubt that makes a huge difference. It could be my DIY fan mod shorting somewhere 👀
I never make mistakes though

I just realized that if you use a debit or credit card in Scandinavia or finland, there is a big chance it will pass through a system i installed
So... it's your fault?
Since what date? If it’s from 2018 then I would’ve had some transactions too
2008
You’ve had 2 visits of mine go through lol
Noice
Also obligatory fuck having to get travel history
What is travel history?
Like where you’ve travelled internationally for the last X years
@clever mortar you had to go through the same pain too?
For what intent?
I have.... A bit of clearance, I've never had to document my travel
I have enough trouble remembering where I was last week... well, when it wasn't all lockdown
Only where I've lived
It was a pain to do it all
My defence if I miss any is “that wasn’t stamped in my passport” lol
Obviously Norway doesn’t care as much. Australia really wants everything
Well, not just Norway
I thought you only had Norwegian citizenship
I lived abroad one year
That is a single line on your clearance papers
The address

Though I’ll be having to ring them to update it on Monday lol
You are right, I should switch to cccp tracking
Or like i tell my mom wherever she complains about Chinese hardware
rather have the Chinese sell me stuff than the Americans, the Chinese just want to sell me more, the Americans are out to get me

Who uses WiFi for speed sensitive transfers?
not me?
Ssssh the Americans can hear us, with their 1200/1 docsis
I just f* up routes and take whole sites offline thus. that's me, yep
Docsis isn’t that bad in the USA surely
I see a lot of users who roll out 1200-1800 now, most are 20-40 up
And they still need 2.5G shitty hardware in whatever router they use
40 Up sucks. But still better than what Telekom provides on DSL here =.=
they should just get their heads out of their behinds and do proper fiber here...
dsl so very german at this point but we have the same trouble here... they finally started to roll out ftth here this year after people got slapped in their face with mobile internet crashing in the lockdowns.
yes D-Telekom reaping all the govt money to build copper and now wants to reap it again for fiber =.=
A1 Telekom (also known as Carlos Slim) is the criminal monopoly here
chose your poison
Fair enough!
did yours also evolve from postal service and keep some state monopoly kinda sthings?
yup
they currently lay ftth fibers exclusively for them in new buildings, its a shit show
mhhm. Building new is the easiest way to get FTTH. Since they at least don't continue laying new copper
I have my ftth since 15 years, thanks to my local community provider
At least you aren't Australia or America
Brb satellite internet, like we are in Africa in the 90s
Hey australia has better than dsl
It’s no fibre but at least 50 down is achievable by a lot
(Though middle of nowhere does get satellite because fuck running fibre 50-300km for one farm house)
@clear ferry was it you bud who said they work for aruba?
topkek
I have two Netgear GS308T
I'm a bit annoyed that they don't have the lldp MIBs for snmp, but outside that I'm pretty happy with them. Especially for their price
I think it would have to be cisco or aruba because of contract stuff
you need small managed switches in a situation where you are bound to supplier contract? o.0
Schools
Mine are black. It's the SMB line
Hard to get enough lines we need through the conduit we have. Was thinking of ideas to bring up in meeting
just get 16 port cisco desktop switches and call it future proof
Good nuff
Yeah i didnt know how small theyvmade managed ones and im about to leave for work. Wish me luck its snowing i think
good luck
Mate of mine got his Starlink hooked up today and was pumped that he could get 180/8 after being on 6/2 at best DSL on a farm for the last ten years
I do hpe yes, and 4/8 are rare, I seldom work with anything smaller than 24, but Aruba website should know
Third world country yes
If you’re in the middle of nowhere fibre just isn’t practical
Fiber makes a lot of sense in the middle of nowhere
As you can pull 100s of kilometres of it
Don't bring that weak copper nonsense
Heck, thousands of kilometres
It costs 40-50k to run a power line on to a rural property here, more cost effective to go off the grid
Plus, if you're ever in trouble, bury a little in the ground and a backhoe will find you in minutes
Wonder what is at the bottom
You
The cost is the issue rather than the ability
Kinda cool, home assistant basically telling me my radiator ain't working right 😂
Because it no longer is raising the temperature?
yea, was trying to heat from 12am to 4am but with no change in temperature, then suddenly a change in temperature, I guess the valve was stuck.
That is not a test! it's a survey!
what do you guys use to store your cables? is there some order to it?
my boxes overflow and its a total mess atm 😄
1 box for ethernet, 1 for usb, 1 for anything else?
Usually yes
one box for everything and then I order a new cable when I can't find anything in that box
what he actually means he just scatters them along his garage floor
i hate the current transition to usb C, cables and adapters all over the place and usually not at hand when you need it
I'm sure it will be the last iteration of it
don't think they will migrate away from the connector though
at least not in the near future
we'll see about that
magnetic connectors would be nice
but that is patented by apple and ms
thunderbolt 5 reaching 80gbps, don't think they will move away from the connector
24 wires in one cable should satisfy higher speeds also
you know the harddrives with that weird micro-b connector?
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/41GykiJZJBL.jpg
I just recently saw a friend using his hard drive with a normal micro b cable - I did not know that this works 😄 it's just usb2 then
yea. Only thing that might be an issue is power supply
since USB3 allows quite a bit more by default
Oh, I thought that was common knowledge @dusky plank
The Samsung s6 had a charger port like that
Sorry, s5
That "test" survey made me think of this.
It‘s obvious but I never managed to wrap my head around apparently.
anybody knows russian?
that is so sad and crazy when i see those youtube videos of people having those as pets and locked up in small spaces
that new ubiquiti g4 pro doorbell looks nice. the screen is a tad too much tho
love the double camera
Translates to:
"The week is long. The silver cat feeds when blue meets yellow in the west. A trip to China sounds nice if you tread lightly."
Well, it's on
|| I actually have no idea what it translates to, and that was the russian code from stranger things ||
@clear ferryyea yea but look it up, look at the features
thing is sick
downside is not sure how they handle streams, like is Ubiquiti stuff locked to only other Ubiquiti stuff?
cause that would be a waste
I just scrolled past all that. Did I miss anything? Modding 101.
'When you drag a cat to the vet clinic' BTW
My wife just reminded me how good this movie is
The Death of Stalin: Directed by Armando Iannucci. With Olga Kurylenko, Tom Brooke, Paddy Considine, Justin Edwards. Moscow, 1953. What goes around comes around
Feel it breathin' down heavy on you
You made that bed you're layin' on
Deeds that you have done, now you cant undo

You've got bones in your closet
You've got ghosts in you...
ah yes, not available in my country. Love that kind of video
the question is, which side of that fence is inside?
Only if there are marshmellows involved
can be arranged
'possums > racoons
LOl I hear MUP MUP MUP MUP
I don't have a twitter or facebook even.. but I got here all the time www.twitter.com/possumeveryhour
HAHAHAAh

Ty for the tip!
Great, now that jingle is running through my head
maybe you non-US folks haven't heard it enough
Jingle bell jingle bell jingle bell rock
damn you
something something maria carey 😄

I considered that for a while
But the reflective glass that is best is expensive as heck in Norway, it's cheap in the UK
But that doesn't help me
But when you realised it was run by a raspi you set fire to it?
I need to get my new home assistant running first
oof 179 for a magic mirror that dosen't include the board
I was thinking of diy ing one
Was actually wondering if using an epaper dispay behind in a small corner would be visible
Or just using an epaper screen an not a smart mirror
Opinions on ZFS over hardware raid
IMO ZFS > RAID, but RAID > nothing
ZFS good, generally speaking
Main thing is, i dont want to spend £80+ on a raid card just to mirror a drive
but backplane can do 8 drives
hmmmm#
For a single mirror, zfs is fine or lvm
Its one of those things, current use case vs future where i havent got a clue
Might just use Dell's own software raid
LSI cards can be had for $30 too
Gives me more options if i want to expand the drives
ZFS gives you more options
My understanding was that ZFS is one time setup
Only if you do it wrong
Interestingly interesting
So you mean like 99% of users
As few as that?
😂
ZFS is the smart way to store raccoon memes
