(don't mention his landline)

umbral cliff
#

Which manufacturer?

clear ferry
#

Hyundai

#

On top of VAG and mercedes

#

Apparently Volvo, ford and GM is doing it too, but not until 2040

#

VAG is doing it from 2025

#

Unsure about mercedes

glacial knot
#

VAG?

umbral cliff
#

Volkswagen group?

#

Maybe

clever mortar
#

Yup

umbral cliff
#

Wonder if bmw are going to announce their move

clever mortar
#

Volkswagen AG

glacial knot
#

Porsche aready said they won't go full EV

#

though tye are investing quite a bit into bio fuels. to keep the ICE cars

clever mortar
#

Well, they're VAG, so ...

#

It's likely to happen eventually, lets face it

glacial knot
#

The 911 is a lifestyle car. Not a car to drive because it is good in any way. And I think there's a second one they want to keep on combustion

#

though optimized to some more synthesized fuel, not refined oil

#

Scania as well. I doubt they'll move that entire branch to alternatives soon.
Probably main brand and some restrictions on which type of car is fully moved. @clear ferry do you have source handy? 🙂

clear ferry
#

This was for Audi though

#

Pretty sure I've seen VW state the same

#

Apparently it is more stop designing engines then stop selling

#

The Porsche ev is quite popular here already, I know multiple people who have switched from 911 to the ev one

#

Sales people 🤢

glacial knot
#

yea, maybe for the main brand. Not the entire Group

clear ferry
#

That said 64% of all new cars last year was EVs here

#

That includes commercial too I think

glacial knot
#

well of course. Remember what commercial means 😂

clear ferry
#

I think the number was 82% or something for ev + hybrid

#

So we are surely getting there

glacial knot
#

I wonder if MAN (and RENK) are going to EV any time soon

clear ferry
#

Norwegian government expected full EV sales from 2025, I think 2030 is closer to realistic

glacial knot
#

are there EV tanks? 😄

clear ferry
#

There are quite a few good ev delivery vehicles

#

The maxus is very good looking

#

Didn't Tesla have a EV long haul truck in the making

glacial knot
#

you trust musk to actually deliver what he promises?

clear ferry
#

Oh, Norwegian postal has bought

#

MAN eTGM

#

Volvo is electrifying their entire delivery range it seems

#

And so is mercedes

#

Volvo FH electric did 1099km it seems

glacial knot
clear ferry
#

Not my fault you have terrible eyesight!

#

I just don't have any depth perception

glacial knot
#

also, which size screens? 40"? 🙂

clear ferry
#

28

glacial knot
#

sounds about right

clear ferry
#

Got two of them used for €300 last winter

#

Great value

turbid stirrup
#

Wow
That's a good deal

late gate

Good morning misfits

I had 2x28" Dell monitors when in the office, along with the laptop screen. Took a while to get used to having the space for only one 28" screen!!

late gate
#

What browsers are you guys using?

#

Im using IE6.0

#

ish

stuck python
#

Offtopic hardware question. Im running a headless linux server (i5) is it safe to replace only the cpu (with an i7) using the same socket (1151) without reinstalling my system?

late gate
#

yes

stuck python
#

absolutely sure right?

glacial knot
#

qutebrowser

#

yes

late gate
#

I cannot see HA having any hw issue when its same architechture

green inlet
#

I would concur @stuck python

glacial knot
#

you can move linux from entirely different systems around the place, it doesn't care

stuck python
#

I was thinking the same. Shutting down pc, make sure power is drained everywhere and just replace cpu. Maybe remove thermal paste with some ethanol

glacial knot
#

move from 10 year old laptop to multi numa system? Sure, why not

clever mortar
#

The only time it matters is if you're going to an older generation

green inlet
#

Make sure to replace thermal paste

umbral cliff
#

You’ll have problems

stuck python
#

hmmmm

green inlet
#

And you don’t need anything to remove thermal paste but a piece of tissue

stuck python
#

remove and reapply yes, this is the way

late gate
#

use toothpaste

stuck python
#

hmmmm interesting guys

green inlet
#

Haven’t looked lately but thermal paste was hard to find in the US a couple months ago.

We just got 2 euro per liter diesel. It is very ouch

Didn't you get an electric?

green inlet

Gas here is in the $3.50 range for a while

glacial knot
#

that's per gallon, right?

green inlet
#

And I remember when it was .99 to 1.05….yes

#

Crazy

glacial knot
#

yea, still cheap as fuck

green inlet
#

Ok….but not here 😉

Was put on hold. Got reordered later last year, was told I would have it by christmas

glacial knot
#

Sounds rough

green inlet
#

Chip shortage affecting new cars here also

last cedar
#

Now got told it is being made between start of feb to middle of march

#

So might have it in April with some luck

#

And it is only hybrid

#

Can't get to work and back on a charge

fucking chip shortage... It would be a perfect time to start working on the map plotter project for the boat, but can't find a raspberry anywhere apparently and the prices went up too

Would a raspi 2 do? :)

orchid rose
#

no 😦

last cedar
#

Shucks

#

I think I have 3

#

Don't tell atx

green inlet

Not just chips….did some painting over holidays….paid 70.00 a gallon. Apparently a paint shortage also

last cedar
#

No. I have one 3. And two 2b

#

Iirc

orchid rose
#

only thing there isn't a shortage for is shortages

green inlet
#

Seems that way doesn’t it.

#

I wonder if some are capitalizing on an opportunity though. I mean paint?

orchid rose
#

Probably by hoarding it. That seems to be the way it works

green inlet
#

My better half wants the whole house painted but at those prices ……

stuck python
#

I think chip shortage has to do with the great powers that be aswell. There are only 3 high end manufacturers that process <2nanometer.

clear ferry

Yes my finnish is poor

stuck python

Companies are afraid their intellectual property gets stolen

clear ferry
stuck python

i saw that yeah!

green inlet

Besides a death defying stairway 🤣

stuck python
#

Btw, who here hosts their own cloud server?

clear ferry
#

I have since 1998

#

Because cloud is just a internet connected service

stuck python
#

right

#

in that case 😉

clear ferry
#

But I also run a full VCF stack in my garage

#

With tie ins to AWS

#

Does that help?

green inlet
#

I 😍 your cloud 🤣

late gate
#

@clear ferry cant even satisfy his own server

clear ferry
#

You said you liked it

stuck python
#

you could give me some advice on my next home server 🙂

glacial knot

green inlet

By a good used desktop and call it a server

late gate

@stuck python Dont ask atx. then you get 10gb and full pro wifi

clear ferry
#

I am not the right person to ask for advice according to people

stuck python
#

hahaha

clear ferry
#

WiFi 🤢

glacial knot
#

pro wifi is a good idea though

clear ferry

Raspberry pi 🤢

cobalt hamlet
#

Depends on your needs? Home Assistant server or complete server to also have it do other tasks?

late gate
#

@glacial knot with a $50k/yr service agreement

clear ferry
#

Did someone say Superdome Flex with 64 TB ram and 64 full size GPUs?

stuck python
#

im pondering the idea of upgrading my cpu or getting new hardware and set up a whole new server in raid1

glacial knot
#

hardware subscriptions 😂

clear ferry
#

Raid1 is fine for os drives

#

Or database log drives

glacial knot
#

raidz1 > raid1 🙂

clear ferry
#

Zfs goodness

#

Gotta pump that memory boy

#

Raid-z is interesting though

#

Need to play with that

#

Or whatever that new zfs raid scheme ended up being called

#

dRAID they called it in the end

late gate
#

@clear ferry Im just going to put high end Nvidia Quadro in my servers for GPU sharing

glacial knot
#

yea, I read a bit and figured that it's fore more advanced uses than my home setup

late gate
#

Its easy to overdo it

stuck python
#

might have one more little question regarding cpu

#

So there's regular clock frequency and turbo clock right? If im transcoding something that uses 80% of the cpu, will it then already be in turbo frequency?

late gate
#

How much are you expecting to transcode?

#

better to transcode on gpu

stuck python
#

well, its a headless server, so i have no videocard

#

we dont transcode a whole lot here, just sometimes when plex asks for it

green inlet
#

Just because it is headless, doesn’t mean you can’t install a gpu if you need it 😉

stuck python
#

and right now i run a i5-7400 and im looking for an upgrade

#

yeah @green inlet but i wanna safe some costs there

late gate
#

put in a GPU even if headless

#

CUDA cores, GPU power = nice things to have

green inlet
#

That’s a pretty beefy box actually for HAss

#

What else are you running

stuck python
#

i will (re)consider this when we invest for a new box

#

hardware wise?

green inlet
#

Services wise

glacial knot
stuck python
#

@glacial knot im not sure if i understand, is it selfregulating the turbo frequency?

glacial knot
#

yes, CPU decides on its own whether it turbos (or how much) depending on thermal and power limits

stuck python
#

@green inlet sab, sonarr, radarr, organizr, docker, portainer, plex, tautulli, cockpit, nextcloud, adguard

#

great addition ongy

glacial knot
#

but 50% use can be of your turbo clock while it turbos, or of your idle clock if it idles

#

though anything in the 80% area pushes it to highest allowed

green inlet
#

Are you running 80% all the time? Or just when transcoding?

stuck python
#

i would just be interested to see when it actually turbos

glacial knot
#

you'll have to watch the actual clock speeds. It should report them properly

#

I did notcie that my laptop doesn't report them per core though, with the default interfaces

stuck python
#

@green inlet no average load would be around 20% i think. When transcoding it varies strongly, i think between 40-99%

green inlet
#

So fix transcoding in your current box.

stuck python
#

shit, i should really get some stats on that

green inlet
#

A 4 core i5 should really be sufficient for what you are doing 90% of the time

stuck python
#

Well, i found a derpy thing. My server only transcodes on 'weird' releases...tv cranks up and gets grumpy then the server will compensate

#

does this make sense?

green inlet
#

Unfortunately I don’t run plex so 🤷🏼‍♂️

stuck python
#

mmmm

green inlet
#

But it shouldn’t be that hard to figure out with a little research.

stuck python
#

so you're saying that i5-7400 is beafy enough for now?

#

8gb of ram

green inlet
#

I mean….if you are running @20% cpu…..Except for when transcoding, why not figure out what you need to assist with transcoding. Also, if you can do a mem upgrade

#

8 gb is on the low side depending on what mem intensive process you have.

#

Have you ever run top?

late gate
#

Just buy a gaming laptop as a server, then you get lots of ram, ok cpu and ok gpu lol

glacial knot
#

and an integrated usv

stuck python
#

memory never goes above 50% weirdly enough

green inlet
#

Why spend the money when he already has a decent box?

glacial knot
#

needs to upgrade

stuck python
#

no you're right, this is what im pondering about. A man can fantasise 😛

green inlet
#

I mean, by all means, if you want a new box….go for it.

stuck python
#

Nah, i'll leave her be. Just next time i will do things slightly different. And for a Windows user exploring Linux through a terminal windows can be quite a challenge. But im happy with this stability

#

In the new house i might hook up some camera's aswell, thats the second reason why i choose a slightly beefier box.

glacial knot
#

get a coral then

green inlet
#

Hopefully soon 😜

stuck python
#

isnt that for the machinelearning?

#

Dont get me started on those houses

green inlet
#

Object detection

stuck python
#

Right now we're aiming for our own building project/rights

late gate
#

I had to start upping cuda cores when I started with object detection

#

and corals

stuck python
#

That coral thing you're talking about, can i run it on my server aswell?

late gate
#

yes

green inlet
late gate
#

you NEED it if you are going to use object detection or you will kill your cpu

green inlet
#

I am running frigate right now without coral

late gate
#

Im running it with 3 corals

stuck python
#

well, if the dreamhouse will end up the way we want, i want a gate opening/closing on carplate detection

late gate
#

no cpu load

stuck python
#

so i would need coral

forest edge
#

if you only have a couple of cameras but a decent cpu your fine

stuck python
#

@late gate you and i should drink a beer

late gate
#

but its worth it for the 50 bucks a coral cost

forest edge
#

not if you only have a couple of cameras

late gate
#

it start with a couple

green inlet
#

@late gate , send one to @scenic radish and one to me. Then we all be good

late gate
#

@green inlet I dont share! I need one pr camera :p

green inlet
#

You have one coral per camera?

#

Yea, THATS HOARDING 🤪

late gate
#

no, I have 3 for 10 cameras

#

Its overkill

#

one can do 100fps

stuck python
#

dang

forest edge
#

you running the dongle or the pci?

late gate
#

me?

forest edge
#

yea

late gate
#

dongle

forest edge
#

3 dongles? one pc? lol

green inlet
#

Yea, you really only need one since you in the 50 fps range

#

But I get it

#

They cheap

late gate
#

@forest edge Yeah I supposed to order one, but clicked three times on mouser so I got three. why not use them?

forest edge
#

lmao

glacial knot
#

just get the PCI card that Linus showed of

green inlet
#

Yea…..money

stuck python
#

damn guys, this coral is great!

forest edge
#

do you watch them to see if all three que?

stuck python
#

im interested in this aswell

late gate
#

yes, all usb version

green inlet
forest edge
#

thats what dongle means

#

I think quad has 3 as well with like 9 cameras or something

#

so don't feel bad about having 3

late gate
#

I dont run any in extreme mode though (its a hand burn warning if you do)

glacial knot
#

how much bandwidht does a coral use? o.0

forest edge
#

more than a usb2 can handle

glacial knot
#

which isn't a lot

forest edge
#

I would consider maybe getting one of those pci adapters that can hold multiple mini pci cards

#

and ditching 2 of the dongles for that

stuck python
#

Im lurking and learning

forest edge
#

what? was that to me or pdobrien?

late gate
#

If I get a free pcie card I would change

#

less stuff in the ports

green inlet
#

Frigate does object detection and is tightly integrated with HAss. It is the go to container and uses the coral.

late gate
#

but guys remember to not run cameras on 25fps. 5fps on detection and 10fps on recording max

green inlet
#

Unfortunately, due to chip shortage….corals are hard to find

forest edge
#

got them in store near me

stuck python
#

so basically, frigate container, coral chip and a 5-10fps camera? thats it?

forest edge
#

but i don't need more than 1 lol

stuck python
#

HA will interact between the chip and the container?

forest edge
#

the cameras dosen't need to be 5-10fps

late gate
#

@stuck python running over 10fps on a camera is waste

stuck python
#

wouldnt that give clonky liveview?

#

or am i wrong?

green inlet
#

You need multiple feeds

forest edge
#

you use a main and substream

#

substream for detect and main for record

green inlet
#

And frigate can share the same stream it uses for detection as a live feed in HAss

forest edge
#

substream set to lower resolution and fps if can

stuck python
#

sounds like a hassle to setup

forest edge
#

its not

#

if you only have one stream it works just fine as well

#

I use mine with wyze cams which only have 1

glacial knot
#

if the cam supports it, it's not hard. I'm just still annoyed at software to make a USB cam available on a network

forest edge
#

?

#

use an rpi

late gate
#

Just buy proper ONVIF cameras. perioid

forest edge
#

insta network cam

#

rpi + motioneye in fast cam is just awesome

glacial knot
#

I must just suck at setting up motion
Because with everything I tried that just took way more resources than it should for that usecase

stuck python
#

and just for lamest terms, i can use any camera right? A doorbell camera would do (eufy).

late gate
#

I use motion -> double take -> face detection

clear ferry

scenic radish
#

10fps is low for recording IMO

late gate
#

no

green inlet
#

I record at 30 fps 😉

glacial knot
#

might as well go with 5 if you go down to 10. Choppy as fuck either way

clear ferry
#

I record at 30 too

late gate
#

its fast enough for someone running on each frame

#

is it superman you are filming?

clear ferry
#

10 is cool if you are pretending to watch a camera stream over dialup in 1996

green inlet
#

But can you identify the person ?

glacial knot
#

just take a picture if you only want to see everything for one frame

late gate
#

quality camera no problem

scenic radish
#

I record at 20 which is the max for all my cameras

green inlet
#

I haven’t setup recording in frigate yet. Still using native motion recording on the camera

clear ferry
#

I do detection on the 720 stream, recording on 1080/4k and do both snapshots of the object detection plus 20 seconds before and after

late gate
#

I record on 1080 / 10fps and detect on 720 / 5 fps

clear ferry
#

Both my streams are 25/30 depending on camera

green inlet
#

If I ever really need recordings, I would want 30 fps

forest edge
#

20fps is fine for recordings, it's not that bad lol

clear ferry
#

🤢

#

Staggering

#

Disgusting

green inlet
#

Of course….until you actually need your recordings 😉

glacial knot
#

som years from now, you'll see 30fps as staggering

forest edge
#

if you have audio you'd want 30fps tho

#

but if no audio lower fps is fine

green inlet
#

Huh

glacial knot
#

what?

clear ferry
#

Just do 1200 feet of cat5e with Poe , you might get 1fps

late gate
glacial knot
#

as if he'd use cat5e

forest edge
#

or spend over 200 to hook a camera up in the middle of nowhere

clear ferry
#

Better call @last cedar

late gate
#

shutter speed, exposure etc is much more important

forest edge
#

actuall if you had a long run with poe you could just dump repeaters throughout and still be cheaper than fiber lol

green inlet
#

So, you are saying, if you have space and ability….you would still choose to record at 20 fps?

late gate
#

it doesnt HURT with 20

#

but fine tune shutter

#

and exposure

#

bad shutter = blur

forest edge
#

if they are wifi cams it makes sense to not have several running 30fps

green inlet
#

At some level, cheap always comes back to bite you. You can either replace cheap every couple years or do it right the first time

forest edge
#

just chews up your network

stuck python
glacial knot
#

of course you can

forest edge
stuck python
#

wait this is m2,

WiFi cameras 🤢

forest edge
#

lol any average joe? where the hell do you live?

not sure what you mean

green inlet
#

Your little temper tantrum last night

#

I am trying to be nice to you 😉

forest edge
#

? what does that have to do with you being innaccurate?

green inlet
#

Cause when you were inaccurate and I called you out. You threw a hissy

forest edge
#

and it wasn't a temper tantrum, just simply told you to go f yourself lol

green inlet
#

Oh…ok

stuck python
#

can one use a GPU slot as a pci slot?

forest edge
#

is this your temper tantrum? that what you mean?

clear ferry
green inlet
#

Auh, no….I don’t have feelings

glacial knot
#

but you'll need the carrier card to make the M.2 fit

green inlet
#

Sold them on eBay years ago

clear ferry
glacial knot
#

like a wiener in the cathedral

stuck python
#

i've got a great idea!

forest edge
#

if you don't have quicksync on the cpu you'll want a gpu lol

stuck python
glacial knot
#

GPUs use PCIe to connecto the CPU

green inlet
#

Modern day gpus work off the pci bus

glacial knot
#

it's not a GPU port, GPUs go into PCIe ports

#

not a bus anymore since express

strange vapor
#

@stuck python Jeff Geerling has a whole series of videos plugging graphics cards into the PCIe ports supported by a Raspberry Pi4 compute module 😄

clear ferry
#

Closest thing that is true to a GPU port is the old AGP port

#

I never saw anything else than GPUs for AGP

stuck python
#

and i would like to push two pci m.2 cards in there

strange vapor
glacial knot
#

I see 2 pcie slots there. the full x16 one and I forget if that small one is x1 or x4

clear ferry
#

Just wait till I mention MCA ports @strange vapor

stuck python
#

@glacial knot so they both are viable for pci cards with m.2 slots in there?

strange vapor
forest edge
#

it's x1 and the slot he should be using for the mini pci adapater

green inlet
clear ferry
#

Or more

glacial knot
#

they are quite literally PCIe slots 🙂 and that card adapter sthat to M.2, yes
though I'm sur eyou can find a carrier card for 2 M.2s in the single x16 slot

late gate
#

m2 in pcie can be a bit wonky if bios doesnt support multi lane

stuck python
#

no im going to use one for coral and 1 for an additional m.2 drive. To that i will migrate my linux system which free's up 1 ssd port, which then i can use to expand my storage!

clear ferry
#

You mean bifurcation

stuck python
#

i5-7400

glacial knot
#

ah nope, that's a sata one =.=

stuck python
forest edge
# stuck python i5-7400

it's got quicksync, i would still consider dumping a gpu in that pcie just to make it be the decode/encode workhorse

stuck python
#

I got you @forest edge

forest edge
#

sure they make a 1x adapter

clear ferry
#

Which is what I use

forest edge
#

actually I know they do.. i just don't know if they are dual or single

last cedar
umbral cliff
#

(Also somehow we still have raspberry pis for sale)

stuck python
#

just to clarify, i can put the coral chip in the mini pci-slot right?

glacial knot
#

not without an adapter

dusky plank
#

lol

stuck python
#

oh ok

glacial knot
#

that's a normal PCIe, just with low lane count

dusky plank
#

it is a m.2 card

dusky plank
#

yeah, shove that IDE connector into the atx

glacial knot
#

surprisingly hard to find good multi carrier boards

clear ferry
#

Isa cards fit in a pci slot if you have a Dremel

glacial knot
#

x16 PCIe cards fit into an x1 slot with a Dremel 🙂

clear ferry
#

I had a customer one time not understand that a x1 card could fit in a x16 slot

#

And that folks, is why I still have a job

dusky plank
#

can these be used with the coral?

green inlet
#

I have seen posts where people discuss using the wireless to m.2 adapter. I think it’s all a ymmv thing though.

clear ferry
#

That is what I do

forest edge
#

if you don't get an adapter that can house at least 2 then I see no benefit of it over the dongle

glacial knot
#

nah, stupidity of people is the major source of job stability

forest edge
#

would just like to shamelessly plug the fantasticness of the wyze v3 starlight sensor

#

they need to release a reasonably price video doorbell using that

glacial knot
#

forest edge

hard to complain the price vs features tho

glacial knot

Is it the same Wyze as Dell Wyze? 🤔

It’s not turned into a police state though?

Next year will be substantially better with insulated walls and new windows

I could count each pellet, that would be tedious though

250kgs?

#

One atx you say

last cedar
#

Yes

#

Silo has 4 legs

#

So would need a 250kg weigh scale on each leg

#

200 should work too

#

I should probably just fill the silo and count the bags on the last day of each month

#

Each bag is 16kg, no measuring or such involved

#

If I fill it with 400kg it has used 400kg

glacial knot
#

but, muh shiny (realtime) graphs

last cedar

subtle pasture
forest edge
#

it's 20 bucks for 5 fans

#

what do you want? lol

subtle pasture
#

I've run into several motherboards that can't speed control old 3-pin fans (or can only control them on one or two headers, but not all of them)

#

I want to be able to run them at more than one speed. lol

forest edge
#

well there are ways of doing that..

#

but there was a 3 pack of rgb ones that were pwm for about the same price

#

should be at the top of the pagew

subtle pasture
#

PWM, and each fan has a built in splitter so you can daisy chain them

#

I'm mostly running Phanteks 140mm fans now. Expensive, but I'd compare their build quality favorably to Noctua.

forest edge
#

my old ass pc dosen't have additional fan headers so

subtle pasture
#

That's why those Arctic fans are handy 😛

#

Any Arctic fan marked as a "PST" edition has this connector, allowing you to daisy chain several of them, with PWM speed control.

orchid rose
#

I was quite annoyed to find out that the Phanteks fans that came with my case didn't have those. Three front pwm fans taking three fan headers on the mobo

subtle pasture
#

Heh, usually cases with that many fans come with a fan hub

#

My new motherboard actually has enough fan headers for all of my fans. I need to swap the splitters I was using previously with extension cables...

forest edge
#

I wouldn't put that on the end of a chain

subtle pasture
#

Do you only have one header?

#

Could just replace both fans 🤷‍♀️

forest edge
#

yea it's a dell mb

subtle pasture
#

Oof

forest edge
#

exactly

orchid rose
#

the fan controller on my case doesn't allow software control so I'd rather skip it

forest edge
#

I think i have fan control with the dell but honestly I don't really need it

#

I would just leave the fans running on high

subtle pasture
#

Time to install a Corsair Commander and be done with it...

#

Then you have consistent fan control, no matter what motherboard you have

#

Plugs into an internal USB header so you can program it

orchid rose

#

lol look like an ha page

orchid rose
#

allowed me to do some more advanced stuff like have the PSU fan be controlled by both the CPU or GPU temp

subtle pasture
#

Ah yeah, I run that too

#

It replaced SpeedFan for me

orchid rose
#

I used to run speedfan too but this seems a lot better

subtle pasture
#

It's a lot easier to configure, that's for sure

#

I have it configured so my rear exhaust fan is controlled by CPU temp, my side panel exhaust fan is controlled by GPU temp, and my front intake fans are controlled by both.

orchid rose
#

Yeah it's pretty nice that way. I still need to buy some splitters since I ran out of the mobo headers

subtle pasture
#

Side panel fan for the win. It really helps keep GPU temps down (and prevents GPU temp from impacting CPU temp)

#

I wish more cases still had one...

forest edge
#

as in blowing onto the gpu?

#

you doing positive or negative pressure for the case?

subtle pasture
#

No, the side panel fan is an exhaust fan

#

Positive pressure case

#

2x 140mm intake + 2x 140mm exhaust. It would be equal, but I have the intake fans on a steeper ramp than the exhaust fans.

orchid rose
#

I'm going to try to go with no exhaust fans but we'll see how it works. It's not a super power hungry system so it'll probably be fine

subtle pasture
#

The GPU exhausts most of its heat sideways, into the side panel, so having a fan there makes sense

orchid rose
#

There are holes on the top

forest edge
#

my new pc has the radiator on the top and I love it, top exhaust seems to work so much better than out the back

orchid rose
#

I'd love to have the PSU passive most of the time as well but I don't think I have the balls to try it. Those heatsinks don't exactly look huge

subtle pasture
#

Running with no exhaust fans works, but it's generally less efficient than having some exhaust going on

forest edge
#

positive pressure with an exit works pretty well

#

altho the dust.

orchid rose
#

Currently the PSU fan is the only moving part at idle

subtle pasture
#

I must be doing something right, because the inside of my case basically stays dust free

forest edge
#

got filters?

#

they help alot

subtle pasture
#

The fan filters are doing some work, yeah

#

Bought some Silverstone fine mesh filters for the intakes

forest edge
#

mine has magnetic ones that cover the whole opening and they work wonders

subtle pasture
#

Yup, magnetic here too

forest edge
#

still get some dust over time but nothing like not having any filters

orchid rose
#

Phanteks claims that the mesh panel should take care of dust but we'll see about that

subtle pasture
#

It helps, but it's not really a filter

orchid rose
#

yeah I'm not that confident about it

subtle pasture
#

The other issue with exterior mesh is that it collects dust and hair, which doesn't look f great when it's the entire front of the case

orchid rose
#

"The Phanteks Eclipse P400A breathes performance with its full metal mesh front panel. Thanks to engineering improvements we have been able to create an Ultra-Fine Performance Mesh that brings the best possible performance while keeping dust from entering the system."

I really don't understand why case manufacturers don't just throw a couple 5.25" bays in the bottom

#

There's plenty of room in the basement, in front of the PSU

forest edge
#

I just network a drive if i need it

#

plus if i really needed a burner I have an old external usb one in a drawer lol

forest edge
#

ah

subtle pasture
#

I'd rather not shrink the case just so I can have the privilege of having a bunch of USB devices hanging off of it instead...

forest edge
#

lol second pc and network the drives

subtle pasture
#

That said, these new smaller cases HAVE the room for two 5.25" bays in the bottom

#

Manufacturers just aren't bothering

forest edge
#

i wouldn't network ripping blurays tho, that could be alittle slow

#

noone wants them anymore thats why

subtle pasture
#

I'm probably going to wind up modding a Fractal Design Define C or something

forest edge
#

on my old dell I put 3 additional drives in the slots for my two 5.25 and an ssd into the 3.5 bay

#

and all my dvd/cd bruners etc are all sitting in a pile lol

subtle pasture
#

Define C with the rear panel removed. The dual 3.5" drive cage slides out:

#

Plenty of room for two 5.25" drives down there

#

fires up the laser cutter to make a nice clean hole in the front panel

forest edge
#

that case you linked before had 2 of those 5.25 bays

#

just get that

subtle pasture
#

It did, which is why I was considering it 😛

forest edge
#

atleast it has a door to close to hide them

subtle pasture
#

But it's huge (its bigger than my current Fractal Design R3)

forest edge
#

lol get an old dell mini tower case

#

i actually like the looks of my old 435mt case

#

it's tiny as hell

subtle pasture
#

I don't mind doing some light modding 😛

#

3D printing a bracket and cutting a square hole? Easy.

#

I do wish Fractal had kept the front door on the Define C (all the other Define cases have a front door)

#

That'd make it even easier

forest edge
#

wonder how that would effect airflow

subtle pasture
#

Which part?

forest edge
#

cutting a hole lol

subtle pasture
#

I mean, it's immediately going to be filled by drive facia, so...

forest edge
#

but it's not a solid surface

subtle pasture
#

And the default configuration for that case is to have an empty 140mm fan hole there

forest edge
#

can't imagine it being detrimental just curious what the actual effect would be

#

oh if there is mesh there

#

then yea

subtle pasture
#

The basement has a trap door you can remove if you want to install fans, or a radiator, in the front of the case

forest edge
#

lol just dry mount the drive inside and open the panel when you need to access it lmao

subtle pasture
#

hah

#

Eject into the trap door hole?

forest edge
#

only insert one screw in the bottom so it can swivel outward

subtle pasture
#

I'd also thought about cramming a slimline BluRay drive in the front panel

#

Like a slot loader

#

Cut a slit up the side for it

orchid rose
#

5.25" and 3.5" bays, am I time travelling here 😉

subtle pasture
#

Just insane to me that nobody (literally nobody) has released a case that allows you to throw 5.25" bay devices down there

forest edge
#

that would not look bad sitting on top

#

you should see the brick i have

subtle pasture
#

@orchid rose external 5.25" bays are honestly a lot more useful than external 3.5" bays

forest edge
#

my old ass regular cd external drive is mnassive lol

orchid rose
#

I had a fan controller in my 5.25" bay in the old case but since it was behind a door I never used it

forest edge
#

lol

#

my dell has slider shutters that cover each bay and since they were always closed I always forgot i even had cd drives

#

irony is the airflow was perfectly designed

subtle pasture
#

Fun fact: rackmount servers and 5.25" drive bays draw their dimensions from the same specs

#

a 1U server is exactly tall enough for a 5.25" drive bay (or three of them side-by-side)

#

Also, a single 5.25" drive bay as we'd call it today, is technically "half height"

forest edge
#

I could see people mounting 3 cd drives next to each other in a rack

subtle pasture
#

Two 5.25" drive bays (stacked vertically) was the original standard, and font-panel boxes for 2U servers are stull full-height 5.25" devices

forest edge
#

but these days people don't want that stuff

subtle pasture
#

Just saying that's why 5.25" gear is still around in any capacity

#

it's heavily used in servers. Everything is built to that spec...

forest edge
#

hell I wouldn't be shocked if games bought in store didn't come with a guide and link for digital dl instead of including a disc

orchid rose
forest edge
#

you'd think that

#

there is a mesh slot on the side as well

#

downside no room for any decent size fans except the only one the back

subtle pasture
#

What's really odd to me is, a lot of super low-end cases have retained multiple 5.25" bays

#

Like, the cheap "careful or you'll cut your hand open on raw steel" cases all still have them

forest edge
#

well those generally get used for like tv media etc

#

so it makes sense for them to have them

subtle pasture
#

I was thinking of cases like the Corsair Carbide 200R
