Had a friend buy a scrapped VW eGolf for $4k and reused the batteries to make a power wall at his cabin
ok - my bad - didnt know that
Because they sold only about 5 of them 😉
One guy in my city bought it, and he has to go to Berlin to fuel it. I know it from newspaper 😃
What’s your city? (Or country?)
Poznan/Poland
Oh wow that’s a long drive
Would love to do this
There are probably laws against it
Can't have too much of a good thing in Sweden
Unless you are an MP
same here in germany
@umbral cliff I can't find it now on the web, (maybe Toyota paid for delete it) but i think guy towed it there and back for refueling. It isn't far ,
We sometimes go there for good kebab ;)
"you want to cut your energy costs?"
That can't be allowed.
We will charge you for not using more energy then
We are not allowed too being disconnected from public energy web
My electric bill was 287 kr.
Total including all the fees and taxes was just under 1000, so 70% of my bill are all the taxes etc for the conveniece of having electric
a month or a year?
we pay about 120€ a month for 415 kWh
I dunno how's my bill, it's my wife's job to carry out it
Heating with pellets, most of thr electric goes into electric heaters (gaming pcs and servers)
I think induction cooktop is my biggest consumer
we have electric water heaters at nearly all sinks, they are our biggest consumer right after the induction cooktop
Hot water and heating comes from city heating network
neat
And every apartment has heat meter (combines temp on the inlet , outlet and flow rate to count it)
Where were use to rent from, they have a rule that you get it heated to 20C, no warmer no colder
Freeeeeeezing
So glad I can have it as I want
I've got 24-25 now
Damn
22 23 is enough for me :D
Need to get winter over with so I can get on with insulation and windows
Like, hurry up already
Gonna be able to heat thr house all winter. With one fart
We had most of houses in area after thermo update
Even my parents 60 years old house
New windows, walls and roof are insulated, gas boiler is brand new with exhaust recuperation
You could recycle all those batteries from the scrapped cars - people make the equivalent of Tesla powerwalls out of them! Getting a cheap source of batteries to do that is the hard part - looks like you got that bit solved. Otherwise you could sell them to people who do make powerwalls lol!
yeah - they do that here - LED lighting becomes the norm - we better charge more for lighting circuits now. You have solar - hmm grid connection fees go up, and solar feed in tarrifs go way down. Better off just going completely off grid, but I see that Bobik cant do even that!
why at each sink? why not one for the house? Or is it that damn cold the water would freeze on its way to the tap?
interesting concept - must cost an arm and a leg?
Not really. Poland has lots of coal, we burn coal to produce electricity, and heat is side product.
District heating is pretty common across parts of the world, and often uses "waste" heat
For heat 40 square meters apartment and water for 3 person's costs about 40€ per month
@strange crag https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cogeneration
Cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP) is the use of a heat engine or power station to generate electricity and useful heat at the same time.
Cogeneration is a more efficient use of fuel or heat, because otherwise-wasted heat from electricity generation is put to some productive use. Combined heat and power (CHP) plants recover otherwise...
new york and a few other cities are setup the same way but using broilers. mainly just business buildings tap in and use it tho
Sweden has a lot of district heating, powered by burning garbage and similar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_heating
Norway has a lot of that in cities
From both burning waste and from dedicated water heating facilities
Everyone here says geo thermal is best, but with the way the electric prices are going, I am not sure where break even point is
Wow I learnt something new! - thanks guys and girls.
I had heard about chilled water being pumped around town for aircon usage, but never heat. Good to know.
We do water cooling facilities for DCs sometimes
But if the DC is close to the sea we just use sea water
And exchange it
Our DC's use standard industrial aircon. Although I have been in a departmental server room that was at 30+ C. Never found out why they didnt have aircon. Also didnt seem to have any failures either.
Some OTEC units were able to pump chilled water ashore to run aircons and could aslo be used for mariculture
OTEC - the most inept name ever - stands for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion. They think its a power plant - but it gets canned when they find out its only 2% effiient as a power plant. What they fail to realise is that can be a large volume water desalinator that produces more than enuff energy to run itself as a byproduct. Instead they build expensive desalination plants that consume huge amounts of energy.
they had some extra pipe and thought they could use it to make an archway? lol
water is getting harder to and harder to pump from the amount of pollution in the oceans. wouldn't be surprised if one day it gets cut all together due to cost vs value
"shit, we forgot to cut the tree down"
"say no more"
Something like that.
More like "hold my beer"
But more modern pipeline are underground
yall love being reliant on gov services huh?
one of the 1st things i do after getting my land is to make it as self sufficient as possible, fuck the grid
Made a program to detect if the fridge is open based on how much white is in the blue box
Hi
why not just raise the front feet on your fridge so it swings shut like it's supposed to?
It's not an issue of forgetting it open. My use case is tracking how often it's opened
wouldnt, if a person was there, affect the reading?
I'd just have gone with a cheap door sensor myself.
Initially I was doing motion detection, and yes that was an issue. But since I switched to white value that issue has pretty much been elimated. Unless you are wearing all white, a false positive is unlikely
reed switch would have been more efficient lol
ok jeez guys simple program that works 😆
lol we like to pick things apart here, duh
it's creative but like in that pretech kind of way.. old school home automation lol
you should have gotten a laser robot to do everything for you, DUH
just to be clear, it's a robot litterally made of laser light
I don't like those simple solutions like using a magnet contact though
why make it easy when you can make it complicated
i run rubegoldberg sensors on all my shit
It's simple and sofisticated at same time
every door way looks like a conglomeration that belongs in mouse trap board game
a string around a pully that rotates a potentiometer
lol
or an air pressure sensor in the fridge
I was thinking a highly sensitive air temperature monitor that can detect even the smallest variations in ambient temperature
I am actually lying
I can't think of a more complicated way than measuring the light output of the fridge
impressively complicated
It's funny because I had a huge complicated program detecting changes in motion, resetting the base value because changes in light during the day would trigger it. Trying to fix people walking in front of it
Then I was like, it just white, the door is white. Now my program is like 20 lines finding the average color of the box
I love it
Indoor cameras 🤢
your indoor cameras 🤢
You gotta pay to see my indoor cameras
I should have asked the doctor for my inside camera footage
OF link pls
@tidal bronze there are videos on youtube about you weirdo's getting rain and everyone was like wearing scuba gear in preparations lol
Depends where the camera went in
Up nose video is entertaining
Yupp
They looked at my vocal chords
Would have been silly to go in the back end to get there
But more kinky
Yes!
@static schooner got a server related question....
Can we have a hall of fame for the most complicated solutions to problems?
Like the camera measuring light instead of a magnet
It would be hillarious
That would just come back to bite us in our collective asses. It would look like a howto guide
Heath Robinson solutions
❤️
Homelab has a homelab quotes
And the best one every month gets chosen
There might not be too many people doing jank solutions though :P
A large part of my career has involved "creative solutions"
Sometimes those "quick hacks" run for years and years 😄
Starting with a hack that gets you going is better than never starting at all because you're on a quest for the "perfect" solution
nothing runs longer than something improvised
Nothing more permanent than a temporary solution - as every software developer should know!
Software? Oh boy you should see the temporary permanent cables my customers install across racks
Yeah , five racks down, one row across, just hanging 150cm off the ground
I've been in server rooms like that
That sounds good
One that had a rats nest of cables in the middle, that you just had to walk around
What do you mean, 15m fiber cables are fine for intra rack cabling
We only need 64 in each rack
ok so i just got home assistant up and running and holy crap
it shows me the ink levels in my printers
Which will lead to the next question - ‘Why do I have so many printers?’
only 2 they are for different uses
one is a mono toner the other is ink
how do i move my home location
never mind
No support in this channel anyway 😉
can the mono one print 🦝s?
i suppose it can
Another point for the raccoons
im just experimenting with the ugly envisalink app but theres no native way to arm the system with no code - am i missing sthg?
Isn't that the right thing to do 🤔
@last cedar do you know any good dumpsters with racoons in sweden or any other places that are worth visiting tomorrow?
Wait, those are temporary installs?
Yes
But I can't tell you where
|| not here ||
Are you coming to visit me tommorow?
Anyone feeling ill yet?
Don't look too long
the more you look the worse it gets
@clear ferry if you look closely there is a raspi running an sd card
Amazed it still hasn't grenaded itself yet
Must be the highest endurance sd card known to man, Nasa will want to analyse it when I am done with it
not you directly, my brother and i are driving through sweden tomorrow or the day after tomorrow
we're visiting nordkapp
Nord what
If you want to share travel plans I can steal your car mats when you drive past say hello
It’s like the North Pole of Scandinavia
Pretty sure that’s where Santa Claus lives
for that you have to send me a friend request
Nordkapp is pretty cool, for five minutes
To see the sculpture, if it isn't foggy or snowing
Then you freeze solid
Which it is, for 5 minutes every year
Other than that, it is just the local family circle, very few family trees up there
-11.6 here right now
.c2f -12
-12 degrees celsius = 10.4 degrees fahrenheit!
we had -11 down here in germany aswell
#thatfeeling when you feel the thing coming out is too big and your hemmorid is screaming for mercy

relatable
Australia will suffer then. Parts of the country rely on desal plants because we don’t always get enough rain
Australia is already suffering from spiders with health bars, what’s a little less water?
wtf
and desal plants take HUGE amounts of power. Why not build one that makes its own power?
Only spiders? what about the snakes, the crocks, the jellyfish, the sharks etc?
and the politicians 😉
What do you mean?
Desal plants require huge amounts of power to be drawn from the grid, whereas OTEC (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) in some of its modes can produce huge quantities of fresh water AND produce their own power. This is much more useful than the current implementation, however the downside is that it is only possible to do where you have a wide range of sea temps between surface and deep sea.
What do you mean? They mothballed the plant in Sydney…
They’re probably running at minimum capacity like the one here. It’s too costly to shut it down completely so they keep it running to make water we do not need.
Nowhere here is relying on them. The only places that would have benefited from them were inland areas.
Until the next drought at which point they’ll be operating at full capacity again
well I guess in melbourne they have a need for it as they pump a WHOLE lot of freshwater into the tunnel roads into melbourne so that they dont crack and apparently seawater isnt good enuff
Priorities…
Victoria / Melbourne is a dump though so not surprising
and the droughts could be a thing of the past IF we could get some decent water infrastructure
So is sydney! and other cities lol
Bored - how do you use the sun exactly?
Eh it’s still going to be a struggle as we start to have less and less rain due to climate change
use the sun to evaporate water, and distill it
Have lived in both as well as other regional cities. I don’t think I’d ever bother visiting Melbourne again
leaving the salt behind, might have to do it a couple times tho
srange you say taht Cal - its pissing down here right now - and when I checked this morning there was nothing on the radars for the whole continent except around the edges
Sounds like you didn’t experience Melbourne properly then
bored - so you have to have enclosed areas to evaporate and catch the water - easy to do on a small scale, but gets harder the larger you go
We’re in La Niña. Of course it’ll rain more during this. Those cycles are getting shorter for La Niña and longer for El Niño. We’ll be set until the next El Niño and hard bushfire season
But yeah, desalination plants for the cities here are an absolute waste, particularly when they only service a few small patches of those cities. If they built a pipeline to where the water was actually needed, it may be a different story. But due to the nature of the distribution, it would never happen.
why not beast? we have national infrastructure for everything else!
What do you mean by patches of those cities? The desal plant in Melbourne covers most of Melbourne
It flows into the normal supply dam areas
we make big shit all the time, not an excuse other then money, and the rich of the world can fund it 100x over so it can be done
Sydney’s only pumps into one part of the city and does not go into the main reservoir
Issue becomes space then
Sounds like Sydney fucked up
but the rich of the world arent interested enuf to do it - so there is your problem - heck even the pollies arent interested
Can cover Gippsland, western port, and Melbourne
Large area to ensure water is supplied
National infrastructure like the NBN???
again, we also have alot of that, eminant domain that shit
hehehe since when did Gippsland need water!! lol
We don’t have a lot of space to pump mega litres of water into
During the droughts lol
we litterally made lakes in america
catch up
Do they pump in regularly from the ocean? And then get pumped out to water supplies?
national infrastruture like power, comms, roads, (rail and gas nearly there)
no but im betting you could blast a new river or cove if determined enough
there version of a drought is the same as the rest of the nations idea of normal lol
Rail is so important yet we fucked up with it. Now playing catch up
Should have a decent intercity set of lines but we don’t
(Also NBN is getting better. But like everything in australia has to start as a complete fuckup first)
also we pump oil products in pipelines across country's
god forbid live saving water be done
yeah we know that bored!
You also have people living in between cities though
tbf, i'd love to get an EV car if they were affordable
We’re lucky if we have wildlife in some areas lol
sounds like the perfect areas for solar panels
to power some desal
Electric trains between WA and east coast is pretty much impossible due to the lack of people
we have wildlife everywhere - you just gotta look! 😉
Desal already fully renewably powered
its an example idc how each utility is powered
You also have the issue of people getting out there to maintain it
A huge cost to get someone to drive 100-400kms for one trip
bored - the problem with solar and desal is you woudl need a shit tonne of solar to power one and seaside space is at a premium cos everyone wants to live there. Building a desal where there are no people would be an issue of sorts
Think Melbourne’s desal is wind powered
Well would presume so given we have a lot of wind
(And is idea due to sea winds)
it will draw directly from the grid - so only partially powered by renewable
oh sweet lord jesus, i meant, like i said after, it's an example i do not care in the least about how any utility is powered unless its my house
heheeh
if you have 9001 acres free from anything but beating sun, seems like prime solar land
thats all
let it power battery powered kangaroos
yes - but it might not be near water or you have to run pipes back to civilisation
i mean, we have internet cables running across each ocean.....
we have energiser bunnies 😉
we have people floating around in space
i think some cables and pipe across one piece of land might be easy
and you have a 73 trillion dollar debt, and plenty of people to make it happen, whereas Oz doesnt.
nah the status quo is all good in that regard lol
we got enuff from the poms and made heroes of some of them too 😉
hehehe - you got snowmobiles? they are just motorbikes too
no 😦
also it's just cold as shit atm, but no snow on the roads
but i like my bike
i dont wana ride in salty roads
i need a shitty track bike or something
yeah that would suck - but people do emigrate to warmer countries lol
you worried about those drop bears arent you?? lol
im a homebodie, i like being near my comfort zone
move your comfort zone
and since when has ice and snow been comfortable?
nice and wet when you sit in them D:
and freeze my arse off? no thanks
you know, you can always put on more clothes. But there's a limit (even worse in public) to how much you can take off
thus, cold is clearly better than heat
agreed
in heat you can usually go swimming - or the aircon. And I would need to put on way too many clothes to move and my feet would still freeze 😉
Aircon? Outside?
in heat you can sweat all day, while laying in the shadow and doing nothing for hours
while in winter you can toll around without becoming a human waterfall
and you cant sit still cos you freeze!!!!!!!
not me
if you like the heat more, i wont stop you from going to such a place, but i'd love to move up far north
I wont stop you from doing that stupid move either hehehehe (like what I did there)
say hi to the polar bears and tux for me
I don't know why motioneye works so well for me but I got this janky setup going now for the past few days where I pipe my wyze cameras into motioneye then output that into frigate and with using hwacc from nvidia it just flows smooth as butter
just wish motioneye could output anything other than mjpeg
It is about as janky as blue iris tbh
Lots of people with issues using the built in deepstack ai
well normally you wouldn't pipe a feed into something before into frigate but motioneye seems to be so good at clearing up the somewhat less than prestine rtsp feed from the wyze cams lol
I even tried using the motioneye feed as the detect while using the rtsp direct feed for the record but the videos don't look as good
a classic michelle
why do you people post the same meme's over and over!
Mey mey
Now I want to play link between worlds again
I remember someone saying frigate is not needed etc etc. Now that someone is a frigate pro, life and times 😆
Frigate + coral is the shizzle
What’s the best hardware to run pfsense/ opnsense on
Or is there better software/ hardware combo too
One LAN, one WAN then
Any recommendations?
I’ve got ideas for wifi (eventually), Poe switch, but need firewall
Lots of options like these on AliExpress
NOK 961.70 27%OFF | Eglobal Nuc Fanless Mini PC Windows 10 AES-NI pfSense OpenVPN Soft Router Computer Intel N3150/N3700 Quad Core 2.08GHz 2*Lans
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mrRU51O
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
I used an older model, this one to route 600/600 for years
With 8 internal networks, including bgp
I don't recall ever saying that lol
The j1900 variant
I do recall saying something along the line sof a dedicated nuc with 40 tpu's wasn't needed tho lol
just get a netgate
Lol overpriced hardware from a shitty company run by bickering kids
I admit it is a little overpriced but then they are specifically designed to maximize throughput
and would last a lot longer than some small pc tucked in a closet
I dunno, rather run an arm device where I don't need to tinker then a pc where you gotta fight your way through lol
then it overheats and falls apart
Yeah, that happens often, best regards a 18 year *sense user
More expensive than atx’s solution
I will probably still stick with pfsense as the OS, since I’m used to it now, but hardware can be anything
Opnsense > pfsense
For routing 3 peoples set of devices at max of 100mbps to the internet it isn’t crazy
then go even cheaper.. use an rpi
Maybe 40 devices max if we have guests too
Yeah no. Not trusting one of those as my firewall lmao
or even a cheap off the shelf router..
Celeron is at least better
I routed all my services on a 600/600 plus 500 external users at some point though that j1900
But I’m now used to pfsense so don’t want to change 😂
uhh.. they are far more reliable than any pc
Tell that to the SD card
So you'll be fine, until you need ids/ips
What’s ids/ips
so don't run an sd card..
Packet inspection
Which adds cost
an rpi3b+ with an eemc in an adapter is going to be the cheapiest most reliable solution you will ever find for that low need of demand
Perfect for sonoma
emmc
And the cost?
Guessing 100$ plus
look it up hater

Does the PI expose any bus that allows to run multiple NICs at full speed?
lol rpi3 100 bucks? maybe in norway..
actually the rpi4 compute module and pci lol
I should check what we tested. I think there's a pretty early limit to the actual throughput of that USB
I only have 1 GBit USB adapter here though :/
yea and it's usb2 lol
oh, did the 3 still do that? I think they were limited to fast ethernet as well when that was the case
but still plenmty for low demand at 100mb's as he stated
I do want to eventually be able to do gigabit symmetrical on the device though
1Gbit/s is low demand network 😂
Probably great for the American standard 500/2 connections
100Mb/s is IoT tier
3 specs say 1gbit, though it is true that it uses the usb bus and reaches up to 300mbit something
also on a single port. If it's a firewall/router you want at least 2 ports
by the time you specced that Pi to something useful you can just buy something useful
they make router boards for the rpi3 compute module too that don't use it's usb bus
And if you add a usb Ethernet adapter to the pi the reality will then be 150 per interface i guess
I know the pi is great but I feel it’s pushing it for this
dont use a pi for firewall, no
the rpi is a perfect network router/switch/ap
probably even less tbh.
they have proven that over and over
compute module with PCI NICs could work. I think I've seen switch setups like that. But I'm unsure about their price
problem is, it's not a simple plug and play in many cases
They've shown that it sucks as router/ap many times
if you want a sbc embedded router go banana pi router or sth
the rpi4 compute module is being praised for being a solid nas as well
can't even do 4k and 2.4GHz 😂
This spec look fine?
Probably
I bought the E3845 last year, works fine
that thing is a turd lol
credits to @clear ferry 😘
Other option is get an old dell optiplex from eBay and a PCIe NIC and do that
What you get for actually asking someone who knows networking
And not @forest edge

yea and you remember who advides you when it dies in the middle of the night
I used to run pfsense on a system i got from the local health department
They retired their old database server in 2004
It was a dual Pentium 3 with SCSI drives
The old hostname was viagra
I kept the sticker on
What are the advantages of opnsense over pfsense apart from the company behind them
More aggressive for new features
Netgate cater to enterprise
And don't do big changes often
They used to be fun
Now they are just cunts
nothing wrong with that, people like consistency
Atx would you say any x86 based computer with dual nics is perfect for opnsense/ pfsense?
updating to breaking shit is annoying
Given you suggested a celeron then processing power isn’t too important?
Yes
If you don't need ids/ips
depends what you plan to do with it
Yeah I don’t. Not gonna be doing that. Just designed to protect my network and do basic port forwarding
Exactly
And is AliExpress alright for computers like this?
lol
yes
I wonder what the delievery time to au is like from ali
That one atx linked shows Jan 9 arrival. Though it’s usually about a week off
I wouldn't trust those dates
Like week sooner arrival
mine took about 6 weeks to eu, but you don't get them as chep anywhere
that's cause ali just plays middle man to the manu
After many other orders and them consistently arriving a week early to that date I trust it
ah well your question about trust made me think you never ordered from them before
Yeah I haven’t ever ordered a PC from them before
That’s where the trust is
Other smaller shit of course. Best place to get bmw trim clips lol
so what's the difference?
Usually 12-16 days from AliExpress for me
$5 trim clips vs $150 PC
you get what you pay for but it's not ali's fault
Or $30 temp sensor
Atx’s fault instead?
that's the same as not trusting amazon for anything more expensive
lol well atx dosen't pay mind to efficiency nor reliability so keep that in mind
Nah, don't need reliability thinking when you work with actual mission critical systems
Says the one who recommended a pi
yea but there is work, then there is home.. then there is you with old retired work shit at home
and they dim the lights when they turn on

🍿
as i said #the-water-cooler message
Lol American delivery
At whatever delivery date they want
In australia Amazon usually goes with courier delivery (so StarTrack - auspost’s courier arm) and they’re usually okay
Since they can drop it at the post office if you miss I
*it
sure it's diffrent in every country
Parcel delivery is so rare here we are surprised whenever it happens
amazon has thier own delivery here but large items always go through either ups or fedex and fedex is absolute shit
everytime I ever gotten a package from fedex it's damaged
Fedex is shit 🤔
is fedex not shit in cali?
I’ve had fedex be decent to deliver here from the USA too
whats the thinking emoji about? lol
How do you get your online orders
In the mailbox or the post office
Ah interesting
That’s what imma have to deal with next year, gonna make good use of the free auspost parcel lockers given I’m in an apartment
Unless acid in your capacitors gone dry
Never had any issues.
you need to buy a lotto ticket then
Did ages ago
I love that in the old Unix servers, power them down for firmware upgrade, never come up again
every single package (course they are always large stuff like litterrobot or ramps) has come damaged and the box torn to hell
Sounds like your local distribution network
No paved roads ?
Did you file a complaint?
I rarely order stuff that sticks me with fedex
vs your pebble streets?
I actually don't mind gravel roads.. much better in the winter

Lol, a recruiting company has sent me three mails asking if they can call me about a job offering
Wonder what it is all about
crazy how accurate frigate can be even when you degrade the quality of the detect video to almost 0
I should just reply with can you offer 32h work weeks, full wfh and $140k base pay I might be interested
sure it's not your local mcdonalds needing a burger flipper?
Or maybe shovel the snow
oh, 32h work week. Not 32 work weeks/a
wish dell didn't use proprietary heat sink mounts
love to slap a cheap aio in this case
btw on the subject before. https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2021/two-tiny-dual-gigabit-raspberry-pi-cm4-routers is pretty good for cost
80€ + shipping? Meh
cheaper for us in the states
Hard pass
@umbral cliff if yoiu want a cheap server grade device then check out computerbank.org.au
Ooh yeah that’s not bad
they hav good stuff and the last time I checked they were in the heart of melbourne too.
That's good value
Website says they’re closed till the 21st of Jan though lol
I got a 5au IBM server with hot swap drives for $60 a long time ago tho
Might look for similar stores in Canberra
non in canberra - sydney and qld
Even similar computer recyclers?
greysonline.com.au maybe
we use to have a place like that here. was like the best place to get second hand enterprise stuff as well as chairs, desks and file cabniets etc
wont get the good prices tho - they're a business and charg appropriatley
My friends have gotten gov surplus cabinets from auction, might be able to get similar stuff but committing
*computing
when do you move to ACT?
Jan 10 lol
well thats gonna suck isnt it. May have to make a special trip to sydney (or back to melb)
Well my unis student association has some e-waste computers I can grab to use lol
Best price of free
also yoiu will probably be off air (internet wise) for 6 weeks since that seems to be the standard provisioning delay
Nah, got internet within 24hrs (already have the place)
WOW!
Literally just contact aussie broadband and they had my order done by 12 the next day
yeah the big T sux and optarse isnt that much better. Have heard good things about aussie broadband
I used to be with Aussie Broadband, they're fantastic
Welcome to the madhouse Banana Fun!
Even telstra can have their shit together at times. Just depends on nbn
I used to work for big T - and that would surprise me if they had their shit together lol
They have improved a lot in the last few years
Actually started to catch up
Optus are worse
thats blasphemous!! 🙂
I would definitely chose telstra over Optus lol
Telstra are alright too if you want a lot of international landline calls (which my family do). Comparable to aussie then
For price that is
Otherwise I would say aussie 100%
I went to change over from O to T but suitable plans just arent there.
is aussie a T reseller?
I’m talking fixed line so no reseller
Think mobile they’re Optus though
I find telstra has better reception for where I go so still sticking with them for my phone
(Which given I fly light aircraft for a hobby, I kinda want rural reception lol)
yeah - found a few T only towns. Just had to suffer for a day or 2 till I moved on lol
expensive hobby!
do you do angel flight?
Nah just hobby atm. Working towards my ppl
Lucky my parents offered to help fund it for my 18th
yeah its not cheap!
would like to do that myself - maybe in the next life lol
closest I got was a glider licence - I mean solo licence in a glider
@clear ferrydoes this meet your approval? lol https://www.amazon.com/Qotom-Desktop-Computer-Q150S-Windows/dp/B08KWBNDBR
Damn discord - #general-archived is hidiing. If I click on the link I can get there, but as soon as I leave it its hidden again wtf?
Did you click the support subheading
That’s still pretty cool though
I did not - but I see now that if I do it appears
its the only one that does cos all the rest are already visible
but now I hjave forgotten what I wanted with it in the first place ho hum😥
Were the other ones unread?
yeah the others are unread - and #general-archived should also have been unread
been awhile since I looked at mini pc's.. certainly tell where all the old unsold intel chips went.
some of this crap is as old as my old dell pc with broadwell chips that they want like 200+ for
It'll work, but expensive
was looking at this one https://www.amazon.com/Routing-Q710G4-Celeron-Gigabit-Firewall/dp/B09K5FRKY6 I do not want the realtek lans that are on so many
but 46 bucks in shipping ontop of that.. bleh lol
oh it went up, it's 49 now
AliExpress
I think the amazon page orders it from there
yea ali is the same cost in shipping
would rather order it through amazon IF I went that route for the simple reason it's 1000x easier to return stuff through amazon lol
I haven't returned an item in a decade I think
do you even have the option? lol
Yes
I actually have, my 4.8 year old drives started getting smart errors
So I returned those for new ones
Must have been in.. 2019
I think
So actually I have done it the last decade
Brrrrrrrrrr
In the Christmas Eve i fell down the stairs
Now I'm cruising and looking for some doctor
Because they don't answers phones today
Another one: i made to weak coolant mixture, and my car is frozen . Engine runs , but who knows for how long
in mother russia you don't fall down stairs, stairs fall down you
So maybe it happened actually
I misscalculated mixture or concentrate was fake
do they not sell the pre mix coolant there?
or better yet.. why mix? just run straight coolant
We always mix for -30 here
Pre mixed nonsense 🤢
lol nonsense
whats yellow vs green there for you?
Green is only murica cars for me
Yellow I've only seen once
And it just turned slushy
Pink or red is what I've mostly had on Germans
ah you all color code your coolants lol
Well no
I don't know if they do that here in the US but the last time I bought coolant you couldn't go off color, just what the label stated since coolant by diff vendors would be diffrent colors but the same stuff
Colour denotes that properties it has
Looking for the best engine coolant for your car? Find out which radiator coolant is the right one for your vehicle and learn about the different types and colors of coolant fluid. Read more.
VAG is purple these days, but used to be red
a lot of hogwash really
sure there is a difference cast and aluminum etc but all these "added" types are just bs to get the consumers to spend more
Tell yourself that and mix two different colours
I dump whatever I have on hand
They're the same. Methylene Glycol
when I was younger there was more of a diversty between cast blocks and aluminium but these days there are only a few vehicles that still use cast blocks
never seen a copper radiator so that seperation has to be more of a outside US thing
Copper radiator . I think cars made in 70 could use copper radiators. UAZ, Żuk, FIAT 125 and Polonez here in Poland.
see
lol
so maybe for you all types of coolant is more dangerous.. but ours cars aren't made of tinfoil so we just dump whatever we have on hand in the tank
you say that but I'm pretty sure even our domestic is on par and even exceeds some of yours lol
here comes metric boy
I'll take a Japanese car over an American car any day
in the 90's and 80's sure
Most cars here have done 85+ mpg for the last decade
but these days american is just as good
With hybrids it is usually better
Despite the horrible requirement of using a specific type of coolant
aside from the hummer, show me one that isn't lol
Even my 2007 A6 did 65mpg
I'm surprised I've been able to live with such a horrible inconvenience
my 2006 truck does 65
They can't handle road salt , after 5 years in Mazda here you can fall down on the street through the floor
Which truck?

exactly
lol it's not 65 you fool.. it's a truck
Exactly
no truck would ever get that high unless it was a hybrid of bio and eletric lol
Im too lazy for you math. My car uses 9l/100km in the city
My XC90 does 50 mpg, and that is a huge car with a beefy engine
31 then @fallow karma
My 21 year old car does about 9-10L/100km in the city depending how harsh I ride it
Or 7.7 on a freeway
German car of course
and btw atx your A6 wasn't 65mpg it's 29mpg
It was not
I drove the car for 5 years and 150000km, I know what milage it did
Listed efficiency is usually wrong
4.5l/100km
So have to go by what you actually drive
well according to manuifacture your shit was a unicorn
Of engine oil?
2.0tdi life
I can’t talk shit about engine types. Manufacturers here have to adjust the engines to make do with our very shitty petrol here
So much Sulfur
Only 1.5 per 1000
4.5 l it's impossible. Ok, maybe if u drive only on the highway, up to 100km/h
But short distances in the city can make it double or even triple
@clear ferrythis outta deflate your ego lol https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1091877_why-european-gas-mileage-ratings-are-so-high--and-often-wrong
We're often asked why cars sold in Europe seem to be so much more efficient than those on sale in the U.S. Typically, it's accompanied by the mention of some supposedly 80-mpg car sold in Europe--while the best U.S.-market vehicles barely crest the 50-mpg mark. Now, Reuters highlights one of the main reasons for the discrepancy: Not only are Eur...
Still wouldn’t discredit his driving experience though
his mpg is diffrent from ours
Our testing method are inacurate, i know that
How’s that? He measures in L/100km then converts
His personal driving experience
Real world figures on my car, I get as low as 40 MPG if I'm driving like a nutter, about 55 MPG "normal", and 70 MPG if I'm taking care
Doesn’t matter what the test is
well I hadn't real world tested my truck, can only go by whats printed
Also I measured the actual usage by starting at full tank and driving
and whats printed is vastly diffrent
Then doing math
Not hard to real world test. Reset the trip counter or record the start odo when you next fill to full, drive it then refill to full, record the fuel used and miles taken. Do the maths
The worst I ever had on the A6 was 46mpg, with a lot of cold running and city driving
or just go off whats the rating is when the same vehicles are tested by the same standards
and his A6 was 29 mpg
under the same tests that list my full size truck at 21 mpg
With what engine?
my truck is a 350 v8
Not what I was looking for
The Audi I presume
I'm guessing they tested the A6 with a V6 or v8 petrol
This one right?
Yes
see the diffrent mpg ratings
Combined fuel consumption sounds about right for that based on your figures
No that’s because the UK uses different gallons to you lol
typical EU infalting thier numbers to look cool
1 US Gal =! 1 UK gal
As the worst
so once again, I go back.. our domestic is on par with yours
The USA does not get the smaller engines either. So even if you want to be fuel efficient you’re forced to buy big too
You say 6/100, but under my foot it will be about 9.5
you are literally grabbing at straws, many of the cars it's the same damn engine
@umbral cliffeven posted the diffrence
But atx talked in L/100km? Not mpg?
he didn't state
I had same car as my dad, C4 Picasso 1.6 HDi. His did 6/100, mine 9.5
good question, did you mean L/km atx?
And definitely wrong. My cars generation of bmw had no 4 cyl in the USA. They only got the 6 cyl
Pretty sure all BMWs in the US come with V6 or v8 in the us
He was pretty obvious @forest edge
yes some models were diffrent but some are the same
that is the point when comparing
Bmw didn't like V in the past
They've made R6
But if you can’t chose the smaller engines then the average will go less efficient. Because you just can’t do it
Oh right, they are weirdos with their I6
German so makes sense
this pretty much answers it all #the-water-cooler message
What does it answer?
That 6L/100km is similar to what atx said?
Given that’s a combined value
It is exactly what I got at the worst
No
how not
39 mpg is equivalent to 47 mpg is equivalent to 6L/100km
They’re the same number different unit
exactly
Maths is hard
So what don’t you understand. ATX gave figures of his driving in L/100km
he was comparing eu mpg to us mpg as if they were the same, i'm assuming since he was boasting about his high numbers
It’s not EU mpg, it’s UK mpg
wasn't till I found that article and you posting that image showing the diffrences in how they are caculated
Because the EU uses L/100km
whatever
4.5L/100km becomes 52 US mpg
Your article has nothing to do with what I posted. I posted showing how the Uk uses imperial gallons not us gallons
Yeah that’ll give you UK MPG
chrome says that site is whacked lol
I blame atx for trying to compare apples to apples
then add a dash Not only are European tests unrealistic, but automakers exploit loopholes in the testing, further blurring the lines between rated efficiency and real-world results and presto
So why doesn’t atx notice a huge difference in fuel efficiency. Him recording under should be a sign that they’re still accurate
I feel better knowing my truck's rated mpg is on par with his fancy car lol
Lol fancy car
21 vs 39 when was that on par
Y'all got some of them cars with four tires?
Hey now, don’t shit on my 30mpg Toyota Yaris 2008
Okay let’s test the larger engine for your truck. Or how about we compare a jet engine vs a 0.9L engine
got something against 4 tires? think your 3 tire cars are better?
70% is really close to 100% ... certainly "on par"
My tiny ass car gets 30mpg
So basically because it’s a truck you get to add tolerances? If that’s how the USA is doing mpg analysis then that’s stupid
It's not how the USA does it, just him 😉
USA has highway vs freeway
do you think a brick flys through the air as efficiently as a pencil?
lol
They will reach their destination at the same time
If 21 MPG is close to 29 MPG then your baseline is screwed ||or possibly just normal for the USA and single digit MPG being considered good||
See hummers
Whilst the rest of the world has the more sensible urban vs non-urban
People like to drive tanks on the freeway here
Are they even a whole number efficiency 😂
I started with aside from hummer lol
I don't trust cars that burns less than 10l/100km. Man have to feed his horses 😎
21 is close to 29 with the factors involved. not like we are comparing car to car
So 29 vs 21 equals 3L/100km difference in usage. Say we go with 20,000km driving over 1 year, that’s 600L of fuel saved.
If we go by Australian fuel prices right now, that’s AU$1.56/L (US$1.13/ €1.00), thus those 3L/100km difference would save you AU$950 a year
That’s not a small number
Your ‘around the same’ doesn’t actually work out
Well if you factor in Houston Texas roads
You are lucky to get 25 Mpg on a Yaris rated for 35
we're not all price gouged as you tho..
Now if we actually use the correct figure for atx’s car (6L/100km), that’s 5L/100km saved, so 1000L
Okay what about the fact you’re not burning 600L of fossil fuels
Or 1000L
That’s a fair point to have too
And before electric car 🚘
his 29mpg is based off us gallon..
How much fossil fuel are you burning charging the thing
How do you get 6L/100km into 29mpg
That’s not a proper conversion
us dosen't rate vehicles by uk
Okay? You’re still not doing the maths right
his 29 came from the same car being rated by us system
By what measurement did you get that? By using a larger engine?
F math, take the same car model from the us and Europe and compare their ratings
same engine
Like a lot of European cars the smaller engines didn’t make it to the USA
Take a Toyota Yaris
Okay got proof? So far you just talk and talk
Small ass engine
But don’t actually provide anything
My car :p
I’m being lazy instead of saying a Toyota Highlander or something
Or the Ford Fusion death cage
Or the Ford Fiesta death lock
Which ford car was known for its death wobble?
Ford F-150, Ford F-250, Ford F-350 pickup
Ford == Found On Road, Dead
Mercia
American
I would never buy an American car
Don’t forget the ford pinto where they found it was cheaper to pay out for death than to fix a safety issue
Because we cut corners for profit
The 2.0tdi as he said
200k miles and I probably have 100k at least left in my engine
so yea 4 banger
Not on an American car
oh it's also diesel
holy hell no wonder the numbers were so high (aside from the inflation)
Your truck isn’t a diesel?
At least it’s not e85
But also what numbers have you discovered? Close to 38mpg?
What’s e85?
yea the manu rates his engine at 39
E85 Gas (or flex fuel) is a mixture of gasoline and ethanol and designed to operate Flex Fuel Cars. It is a renewable energy made by fermenting and distilling corn. E-85 contains mix of 51% – 83% ethanol with unleaded gasoline.
Oh we only have E10 as a max here, which is 91 octane. Then also have plain 91, and plain 95 & 98
but he was trying to compare a 4 banger diesel to gasoline
We don’t get to choose
They put ethanol in our gas up to 7-8%?
or did
Volkswagen diseal fraud
says up to 10% on the pumps.. it's also why us cars eat through rubber hoses so fast
GM being the push behind the takata airbag recall too (since they were the first customer) then everyone else copied the cost saving airbag
Given the cost of petrol elsewhere in the world not a bad offset
Almost like our taxes… we make stupid changes to “generate more jobs”
when our gas gets too high the goverment steps in and lowers it lol
Pfft, gas’s prices here are insane
in texas?
I see places $4 per gallon in Texas
along the cost or inland?
gas here is like 2 bucks
Glad they prioritise petrol over investing in actual infrastructure 😂
loaded statement
Rail & other public transport is important
we have it all
So you mean normal petrol prices for the rest of the world
whats your point?
Important? We don’t do that here
even about to have the hypertunnel or whatever they are calling it these days
Really? I hear so many stories of people who don’t have access to even a bus. Or that trains aren’t easily accessible to travel long distances. That cars are needed for most travel
We pay USD8.4 per gallon currently
depends where you live. pretty sure even AU has rural areas
Metro is for the poor and or rapists, everyone else drives a car here in Texas
I pay about $2 for a "full tank"
lies!
How close is your nearest bus stop then? Or how long would it take to get to the city centre if you don’t live there
Is your tank only a litre
People look shady as hell at our buss stops
within walking distance.. takes me 5 mins to get downtown lol
you got solar.. thats why it's 2 bucks for a "full tank"
Atlanta had been waiting 20 years for a working tram system when I was there in 2020, and it wasn't even begun yet
no solar
Is that still true @last dirge
don't think it's 2 bucks to recharge one of those off the grid
$4.78 per gal for 98 premium petrol here
got cheapish electricity though
What’s the capacity of a Tesla battery?
scared, bigoted white people are keeping that from happening
what it cost you to fill up at one of those charge station?
As normal then @last dirge
Read into how the USA pt system is poor: https://www.vox.com/videos/21529609/usa-public-transit-trains-buses-cars
mine's 75kWh
Oil companies
@umbral cliffyou need to be careful what you read. context is everything
$18.75 aud for a full charge then
supercharger? like $5 or so
United corporations of America
no, scared, bigoted white people
they're afraid criminals will ride the train into the suburbs and rob them
then return on the train
So what context is there? Plenty of articles talking about how the US public transport system is critically under funded and under invested in. Look at the massive roads and parking lots you have, you don’t need those if you have good PT
and also "only poor people use public transit"
Their catalytic converters are already getting robbed
Guys with cars full of them are getting caught all the time
plenty of articles that say alot of things about alot of countries too
