xD
Opnsense
What hardware you got
And stop derailing the shit post channel with serious questions /s
I literally just changed hardware
I need to knooooo
Ran on an optiplex 7010 with a 350t4 card, one pihole vm and a opn vm running on esx
I wanna virtualise pfsense high availability and clustering
Now running on a 1220v3 e3 xeon bare metal
It pulls about 24 watts
ive never done pfsense
So I can live with it being bare metal
Using adguard as a plug in, so don't need a pihole vm anymore
i also have 6 x 1tb hdds in raid o
why...
A 220 would be a nice modern ish opn box tbh
Why raid 0
FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE
230 would also be nice
because i wanted to see what i could pull
RAID 6
They are pretty efficient
i want the short depth but an indate idrac version
and the read is 1.6gb/s but the latency is meh
The one with green lights is the opn box
i really want something like that
Why are the drives all not in order
Why you don’t like doing the Java dance?
Yes I know I have a supermicro fetish
How did you know xD
Because I have old gigabyte boards that require an old ass Java version cuz of cryptography bullshit
I got a SMX1000i. With SMT front
I have to use Java 7
Ur a Java 7
Ima Java trash
Pulling 56W it will go 2 hours 50 mins apparently
🤢
Expecting my whole rack to pull about 120W total and give about an hour of actual runtime
i think idle what i'd need to handle is like 600w switch over
only for like 10 min tho
just enough to not let it power fail
what ups u got now
Ooof, you probably want like a 1500VA/900W at absolute minimum
just some random retail no screen bs unit
You only need something that keeps every on long enough to shutdown
Try and get pure sine wave, R710 psus don't like stepped or modified wave
Not sure how the later servers are though
Everything should be filtered anyways
i wish our mains here was filtered a little better
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
yes
i agree
but that is EXPENSIVE
ill make an 18650 wall though
I got the 3 phase, but no battery
i do want to bring in 3 phase if i can when i do build
imo all modern houses should have 3 phase redundant power, smart housing and a dedicated server room with hvac
A 3 floor underground car storage would be nice too
Only 3 floors? :(
i'm working an one aswell, do you need any help?
3 floors 12 cars per floor
and for the expendable money for that stuff on top
lol thats a good point
I couldn't keep up with 36 cars
Never thought of that
I could actually maybe see me having 2 cars, max
I would love an old r32 or r33 skyline. And would need a works car
Just buy a gotterdammerung
If I could afford one I would probably buy one
Heavily moded ones are like about half what house cost, would rather have a basically stock one
I wouldn't get one solely for making 1000bhp like some people set out to do
I just like the music
Rebuilding it after every pull is annoying though 🤣
i think that'd be the point
Would be nice to have a bit less fire spitting and only 400bhp, but all the music (probably less wastegate chatter though)
Come on board my R32 GTR for a first person drive to the farm for some pulls.
Shot on GoPro Hero Session.
Instagram: Joshsgtr_32
That would be SWEET
But it will never happen
Could possibly swing a volvo R though, within a couple of years
too bad you have no unlimited speed limit

Who thought a speedo that tops out at 180 was a good idea? Hahaha@finite atlas
That thing is crazy
its fun
the manufacturer thought that 180 would be enough
i find it funny that it tops out at 250 and he keeps accelerating without knowing the speed
In the UK they want to put mandatory speed limiters on cars
Dont know, my speedometor isnt showing more than 180
those cars usually have a gps speedometer somewhere
What number do they want to limit at?
his highest speed was 310 km/h
Iirc new volvos are limited to 112mph
most german cars are limited to 250kmh
but has 1000 hp
Well, yeah :D
with a proper unbricked car, you can do 400
Still has to punch a sizable hole though the air though
yeah
isn't it 300? I think everything > 350 needs a special license
Chiron does 430 ish right?
already going 200 in my brothers 1.5 tdi is amazing, i cant imagine how 300 would be
well, car manufacturers have a loose agreement, that their normal cars dont go above 250 so the government dosnt bug them too much, some special version however can go faster easily
300 is almost full tunnel vision
i dont think you need a special license for anything above 350, but i dont know it for sure
I only know the bugattis are locked on 350, you need a special license to go to and above 400
the law is, that you should be able to drive your car safely with sane limits
if you drive 350 and cause an accident, guess who's fault its gonna be, even if it wasnt really you
70mph
for the uk, thats a sane limit
however i wouldnt buy a car with such a limit
Never driven that fast tbh, 170kmh only. I can imagine that 300 would be tunnel like though
200 is already somewhat tunnel like
according to the law everything above 250hp is unreasonable and thus illegal then
and little bumps and rocks on the road are rather scary
😄
which law?
this one?
nope
Not sure it would help, frontal crashes at a lot less than 70 can be fatal. I guess they have better statistics than I do though
They don't care about crashes
💸
a typical class B license allows you to drive any car with up to 3.5t and up to 9 seats
nothing mentions speed limits
ok, so no speed locks
imagine driving your porsche with 300 and still get taken over by a bugatti with 200 more
however, you can play lead foot on the autobahn all day long
other cars may clog up the lane and some parts of the autobahn has speed limits
I mean, the bugatti will fly away with the littlest shock but this power is mental..
- the insame fuel consumption going that speed
my brother drove 200 on a 3 lane autobahn for an hour and had to slow down about 10 times, cause other slower drives clogged the lane
he also burned through like 20L of diesel
Didn't clarkson say a squash court of air per second? That would mean a lot of fuel 🤣
i think the bugatti had something like 120L/100km at max speed
Probably a big tank too
too bad there is no kerosene available in public
ethanol is
E85 was pretty cheap here
the W16 bugatti Chiron has a 100L fuel tank
Bearing in mind you use 30% more liter for liter
But now it is the same price as 95
For some silly reason
but tbh, i'd be more than happy with an Audi A2 1.2 tdi
3.5L/100km, all aluminium and needs very low maintenance, i love that bad looking car
Merry Xmas. Speed limit? Philosophy here is: No cops or speed trap nearby- no limit. All speed traps are on Google maps, only problem is unmarked police car. No risk no fun . Anyway, worst penalty for speeding is to loose your license , but on the other hand driving without license is only 100€ penalty, (except you will cause an accident or riding drunk) so...
you can lose your car here too
we can be imprisoned
We have hidden mobile speed cameras, they look like a normal car till you get close and see the camera gear inside. Depending on speed it’s either a fine, loss of licence, car impound, court hearing
Fun thing about large engines and small tanks, my father had a 73 thunderbird, with a 7.5l engine or so, it had a 50l tank, you could see the needle move when you pushed the accelerator
50 liter tanks need to die
Current octavia has a 50 liter tank, it feels silly filling it at half full, in like 5 seconds 🤣
I wasn't surprised my friend thought the xc90 was a guzzler
Because it only has a 50l tank
And a very long gas-tank measure thing
So it looks like it is eating gas, but in reality it is 0.75 usage
What about 60L?
At least 72
Nah , my cars are always filled max 1/4 tank . I never know which one I'll drive next week, and it's always good reason to buy a hot dog at gas station
I stop by a gas station every day I drive anyway
I have 30 miles to find a gas station when the low fuel light comes on. On all my old cars, I was routinely on 0 with at least a 1/4 -1/2 mile to go. My new car goes to x x x x after 14 miles so I have to start looking then and just guess. Knock on wood, I have neva run out of gas 🤪
Isnt it the compressor
not the capacitor
Wait no
why did i say compressor
I meant the cathodes
I was trying to figure out what TV uses a compressor 🤣
something looks wrong here
Old samsung lcd
Analog MP4
Eww. I get anxiety below 1/4 a tank. Never let my car get below 1/2 if I can
wtf
you would hate my truck. the gas gauge is brokered so most the time it says empty but sometime it will register half of what I actually have
Couldn’t do that. I want to know how much petrol I have all the time
i never let mine go red
I generally try to always keep 100km of range in the tank at all times as an extreme minimum
You need to be able to drive somewhere in an emergency without worrying about fuel
Lowest I’ve ever gotten in range was 80km. Because I had to do a lot of driving but no time to actually fill up
First second I could I got petrol
Had 5L left in the tank
My wife does most of the driving so she usually leaves me with 5L
Very annoying
My tank is only 50L too
I’m pleased with my car, 60L tank but can get like 800-900km of freeway driving at 110kmh, or 500-700km urban
The latter depending on how much I like to floor it
My car say about 450km when I fill it up
The estimate disappears under 60km so I've never tried testing it
Mileage is pretty crap to be honest.
Hyundai ix35 2.0L 4 cyl
ur pretty crap
Mine varies depending on my fuel economy at the time. If I drive hard it’ll drop. If I drive soft or only drive freeway it’ll climb
Mines a 2000 bmw 3 series 1.9L 4 cyl lol
Is that a sedan?
I hate SUVs to be honest. But wife wants what she wants.
I'd much rather have a station wagon or a minivan
Yep
But station wagons are near extinct in Aus
minivan? ew lol
Stuff SUVs
SUVs are the worst of a sedan, wagon, 4wd combined
we have the opposite reaction and experince here in the states
No one at work has even seen what I drive anyways
Feels like everyone here in aus drives an suv but there’s also almost universal hate against them
Only use the car for lugging kids and stuff around
Minivan would be amazing but they're quite pricey
SUVs here don’t always come with a tow ball either so it’s just for show
Buying my mums Pathfinder off her mid next year
Not really want I want but we need a 7 seater and the price is too good to turn down
SUVs have no advantage for towing anyway
minivan's here are all but dead
You need good engine and transmission for towing.
and there is no stationwagon's anymore lol
What do people drive, trucks?
4 door cars will always be here
Everyone wants an SUV at a minimum herr
Trucks are too big
Trucks are insane
i wanted an suv with some towing capacity which years ago use to be a thing but is now is very limited
(By truck I mean what the Americans call Utes)
Unless you're putting a sheep in the back or towing a 40ft boat why does an average person need a truck
To compensate for something 😂
Thankfully trucks in urban are relatively common here for now
you really don't see many average people who do not use the bed for hauling stuff own and drive a truck
Although Utes are getting bigger and more ridiculous
I think they are on a downward trend now
the current models don't seem as big
They’re still huge
I drive a 2006 so I get a pretty good size comparision as I drive past them lol
Thanks for that @scenic radish

I don’t get why they need to be so tall, allow people in sedans to see past please
he's vibing atm
I’m trying to turn left, can’t see any traffic coming because of this giant Ute
lol umm no
You don’t want people to see past?
Then don’t sit far forward so people can be staggered
why would i care what the person behind me can see lol
Not even small, averaged size sedan
Cars shouldn’t be 2m tall
if i gotta look down, it's small lol
If you make your truck tall for no reason then anything can look small
(And truck height is usually inversely proportional to something else too)
There is def a benefit to having a higher vehicle 😉. And we don’t call them utes.
Yeah, I'm in the US and I can't say I've ever said ute before lol
I think the aussies call them utes
That's a semi boi
We can use semi too. But truck means that, can be a box truck thing too, etc
|| inb4 dick joke ||
Basically heavy commercial vehicle
Just a guess….but I would say pickups were traditionally for the country areas. They were work trucks. Sometime in the 80s, it became fashionable to raise them and go 4 wheeling
It kinda took off from there.
Then soccer moms who didn’t want to drive vans made SUVs a thing
people still do that and in cities which is dumb as shit
Because the truck became popular
wtf you need a raised truck with big ass tires for in the city
It’s a penis extension
Ask my neighbour
One of the final scenes in Back to the Future where Marty gets a giant pickup truck, supposedly the epitome of awesomeness, always confused me.
Urban cowboys
I understand county having trucks like that. been stuck in some pretty deep mud in the middle of a field myself a few times but never in a dense city
those asshats can't even fit in parking garages
Rural is fair, you actually need to take stuff in your bed then usually
Same with tradies (but they don’t need to be as tall)
I grew up in an urban area with a bunch of rich kids who had nice trucks. We used to go mudding. Aka 4 wheeling. Good time
good till you get stuck then gotta wade your ass out for help
Uhm….not with those big ass raised trucks with 4 foot tall wheels
They all had wenches on them also
And in them also @static schooner 😉
I guess I did that wrong. Winches on the outside, wenches on the inside 🤣
RUDE
Hateful
they are tall for ground clearance - gotta stop your sump getting ripped out by rocks. OTOH in the city people drive cars that have been lowered so much that they have to take 5 minutes and go diagonally over speed bumps! Bloody idiots! What makes me laugh is that people in the city with 4wd that also take those speed bumps very slow. Also idiots as you can take them at normal speed even in a standard car.
dunno what kind of speed bumps you got but if you hit ours at normal speed it's gonna do damage lol
No dude a frames don’t exist
A lot of speed bumps are really brutal
The hard edge metal ones with no curve
That could be a wall 🙂
Some of them seriously are almost box curbs
"safety"
Even those people with offroad cars can cruise over them at 40k while people in a Yaris have to come to a stop and roll
I wouldn’t dare go over a speed bump at more than 30-40kmh. Too easily damage my bumper or suspension lol
Sure might be fine for a small one, but one misjudgement and boom
Good design of carparks is better than putting in crappy speed bumps that just wreck suspension of small vehicles
Yeah some outside Bunnings near me I have to come to almost a complete stop
The amount of car parks I've seen with intersections on them that are impossible for 2 cars to go through at once
When they could just remove 1 or 2 car bays on the entry to make it easier and safer and quicker
But I suspect there's some "metric" that says every car bay generated $X amount of revenue per year
Ignoring the fact that people will be reluctant to do their shopping at places where the car parks are mental
Side topic, what did the home automation Santa get you all for Christmas
Life tip. Always look at the big picture and ignore "local optimisations"
We just did presents for the kids
Wonder how they do that metric when the car parks have X hours free
No not the parking fees
But like, say someone would have done a calculation at the shopping centre design stage
And said "80 stores and 1000 bays with a store aggregate revenue is $50m/year, "
To be honest I have no idea what they do but I strongly suspect that's the justification for car parks that squeeze in every single bay possible while making them impossible to navigate
Even though I’m sure 990 bays but better traffic flow would generate the same amount of money too
I suspect more
Turnover speed of carparks is far more valuable than total capacity imo.
Slightly less bays but faster turnover = more money
I guess it’s harder to quantify in plain numbers as better flow is more wishy washy than saying 1 spot generates $X so 1000 generates $1000X
Especially when people doing the shopping centres aren’t going to be shopper sociologists
And ignore the entire system
Or psychologists
“Generates reports 10x as fast!*”
*getting to report stage takes 200x as long ss before
Theory of Constraints is a good thing to look into if you like this stuff
There's a book from the 80s called The Goal which is the "inspiration" for The Phoenix Project
The basic premise is a fictional manufacturing plant that's failing
And how they need to learn how to do less to do more, rather than make every machine become utilised/make as much as possible as fast as possible
Yeah I guess big picture vs small picture too right? Like instead of just focusing on individual machines operating at <100% efficiency look at the whole plant as to why it’s dropped
make the tiny high pitched hum stop in my extra tv
Just get older and it'll go away
When did off-topic become so intellectual 🧐
When you're not here : D
Probably because it’s Christmas so we’re all drinking
Get smarter the more alcohol you have
Auh….the budlight commercial. ||I love you man||
That's right, it's Christmas day down under right now
Now that’s acceptable 🤣
The famous "I Love You Man" commercial for Bud Light, circa 1995.
Theory of constraints is also the precursor to Devops btw
What time is it east coast USA?
846
Few more hours left for you lot then lol
left for what? another day same as any to dawn?
Midnight mass in 3:15
i am the grinch
I wouldn't touch you with a 39 1/2-foot pole
insert dick joke
Or mast joke
A day to drink
How's it going.
I figured out how to make my 🍆 12" long
|| Fold it in half ||
I'm new around here
Booo….and I didn’t even click the box 🤣
if i click this, and it says fold it in half.....
Welcome!! It’s a little weird tonight
Or today
Depending on time zone
This actually pretty tame for the #the-water-cooler of past
lets spice it up then
Shaq is a national treasure
And that hot ones interview is a masterpiece
Is he tho
Yes
Iirc he actually has helped esports
Robin laid an egg
Disturbing lol
Sir this is the meme police 👮♀️ we just have one question: what the fuck
I lol'd
Is it time for Rodney Rudes Christmas song? yet?
That gif will get you banned in a lot of places
actually it was kevin bloody wilson and its been taken down - bummer!
which ones for example?
Oh no, you are not doing that today
Ho, Ho F...g Ho,
What a crock of shit
We all work for Santa
We've had enough we quit
etc
i'm very confused xd
I think I found it
yup thats the one!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone.. 🙂
it's not christmas yet you futuristic bastards!
What? You didn’t get a time machine for Christmas?
no, pretty sure i got socks
thats cos they sell everything and it was removed from utube due to copyright (probably so apple could start making money on it lol)
Funny how we always need socks
thats cos you live in a cold climate!
Texas queensland isnt cold at this time of year lol
Given it’s not an apple album more than likely it’s whatever record artist owns it
yeah Cal I was gonna update and say that the artist would also make money if apple got paid
My point about Texas being cold… it’s not
It’s from both barrels music as the artist. More than likely they’re enforcing the exclusivity (wouldn’t be surprised if it’s because they hate Spotify too)
Over 55 degrees in my roof right now
Anyone ever installed radiant barrier in their attic?
are you in Australia? Or how do you manage that at this time of the year?
35c in my roof atm. Not terrible
you could go and sunbath there 🙂
You in Perth?
More thread
is there a benefit of thread over zigbee? i don't like change
Matter, HomeKit and ha can control the same network
Plus 3 thread to rest of network routers? All as a hub as needed?
redundancy of the hub sounds nice
Yeah, I do like that another device can take over as "coordinator"
I could rig that up with z2m. But having it in the protocol sounds way better
Automatically though?
And it being based on ipv6 is cool too
Thread definitely sounds like zigbee but with more flexibility
Kinda? I have backup coordinator USB sticks. the config + persistence is on NFS already as well. I could just spawn a container on a different host if the primary one goes down
That being said, I don't plan on switching my 70 zigbee devices with thread anytime soon 😄
Hoping the coordinators will be able to do zigbee and tread simultaneously
meh in IPv6 for local networks though. Huge addresses for pretty much 0 benefit /shrug
Yeah, I suppose
So we can start swapping over once HA supports it
worst case, just run 2 different coordinators and have HA do the coordination between the meshes
while using portainer how do you connect something running in one container to another container? I've tried using localhost, the the containers ip.. I cannot seem to figure it out
That’s true
Truck is a pickup in your country ? I think we talking about different perspective. I own now Grand Scenic, it is considered big in Europe. But i think i can load it on the bed of your pickup/truck*
delete as appropriate
pickup beds are generally only 8ft long or less maybe 5ft wide
I figured out my container issue btw
Didn't quite make it to sixty degrees in the roof
Ft tells me nothing, i got to Google it and do some math
Happy Holidays everyone!
As i mechanic i often watch yt clips, where people do some car repairs. I always wonder why in America middle size truck (substitute of European eg. Iveco daily or Renault Mascot) need 7.4 L engine. Renault has 2.3 and Iveco 3.0 . Both has about 180HP and 400Nm torque , that's More than enough
'cause compensation (not the monetary kind)
But i kinda like American automotive. Everything is simple, easy accessible ( big means lot of space everywhere ) . Did i mention about simplicity? In '90 while in EU everything was multipoint injected, dohc with 4valve per cylinder, aluminum blocks with output about 60hp per liter , in US they still had 2.5 Iron Duke , and OHV V8's with output about 30Hp per liter. I don't know nothing about reliability of those US engines, but i think it was better than some of European
Yeah European ones are designed to reduce emissions too. US doesn’t care as much
Not true , i think first EGR valve was obligatory in US
But in EU fuel economy always was more important than in US
Russian automotive is similar to US. Simple, easy to fix . BTW most of their engineering designs are derivative from Ford AA, because Russian produced it under license. So if u have a UAZ or Volga and take the engine out, bolt pattern of the gearbox is the same as on early Ford Sierra, or Taunus.
Fuel economy usually equals emissions too, since less petrol used = better
Mmmm
Not sure if the better emissions when new offset the time and energy cleaning up when they clog the entire engine
just get an electric car, problem solved
That's Mostly true, but generally better fuel trim causes less C02 and more NOX
I would like to
But a good one costs as much as my house cost
@finite atlas nope. 75 % energy in my country is produced by burning coal
in meinem land ebenfalls
but i'm planning on putting solar panels and a wind turbine or two onto our land to charge the future EV
thinking about getting a twizy first for short range drives and using our petrol car only for long tours
Asking about an xc40 recharge, but atx said they were smol and I don't think I am allowed one
Our government made new regulations, now solar panels are less profitable
Same. But energy prices going up a lot might make it worth it
I am thinking about a hot water panel at least
Range. Trying to drive 700kms would add an extra 30-60 minutes to the roadtrip. Painful
Always have to heat water, can probably save 1 burn a day
Oh, your tesla smart wall!
i have about 30kWh of laptop batteries that i'm salvaging, got them for 600€
tesla dumb wall please xd
I live in block housing .
Many Explody bois in a single picture
Where is your fire extinguisher
ask my sink
the ceramic is already melted thanks to one exploding 18650
i now know, that it mixes too well
Tbh I just want an electric car that can be bought used without the issue of dying batteries
Lithium Titanate Oxide > Lithium Iron Phospahate > Nickel Mangan Cobalt > Lithium Cobalt Oxide > lipo
what about a tesla?
The idea of a Tesla battery pack being $20,000 is eeek
goes about 320.000 km and still has 80% left
Sorry, LFP it was called
Like what they use
yeah LFP is waaay safer
Also 320km is not long at all. That’s tiny
320 thousand km
If someone wants to live in harmony with nature, should made batteries of cucumbers
Oh you meant total life? Yeah still age of battery pack
Don't know how the Tesla engine quality has improved, had a colleague replace two engines in 18 months
yeah
what do you mean with age?
I could see myself with panels and batteries. But we get so little sun in the winter here, could never go off grid I think
same here in germany, thats why i wanna do wind too
Like I drive a 21 year old bmw, 84,500kms, still kicking strongly and will do for another 5-10 years I think
Then going to look at converting to electric for fun lol
Batteries naturally aging too
not much tho
i have used laptop cells that are 20 years old, that still hold 80% or more of their original capacity
We get very little wind just where we live
):
If I could get energy from the cold, or the dark I would be rich
Still wouldn’t want to risk it. Big repair if they do go bad
are there any predators for raccoons?
the statistics are pretty clear on that topic, but you do you
I should invent anti solar panels, thry make electric in the dark, but not in the light
@last cedar
My wife's ford 1.6 TDCi has about 320 000km, knocking crankshaft bearing since two years, but it won't break totally.
not caretakers calmelb xd
Yes, usually people hunt me for my doormat collection
wellllll
i know a solution for your energy problem
hang some doormats into human hamster wheels
and let them produce the electricity for you
I am thinking I can cut usage dramatically by having water heating panels.
No heating via electric in summer. Reduced heating by pellets in winter
Imagine having electric hot water
Not cooking
and not a 20 year old gas boiler
Can possibly even heat a couple rooms via excess heat from water heating and use ftx to pipe the warmth though the house in spring and autumn
Next years projects are windows, doors and insulating behind wood panels, so should save a ton of heat. Need to insulate the loft to standard too
Maybe collect farts , isn't it burnable gas also?
oh and back to your safer LFP batteries
shipped directly from the manufacturer, they cost about 135€ / kWh capacity, my used 18650 cells hit 25€ / kWh capacity
while yes its much safer & easier to do and they would last much longer, they are also way too expensive compared to my DIY approach of used stuff
- a well designed NMC / LCO battery just like a tesla battery pack can last a looong time aswell
Ouch
Big price difference
get a thermal camera, they can help you a lot when searching for spots where your house leaks warmth, maybe you can group by it with some friends or so
Don't need one
@finite atlas how did you combine the lipo cells together?
I can stand anywhere and feel the freezing draughts, I know where it is leaking 🤣
but keep in mind, those 18650 cells are used and often 20-10 years old already, i spend like 2 hours daily for the next 2 months on them
those aren't Li-Po cells, they are NMC & LCO cells, Li-Po is much worse regarding safety
i will solder them, just like my first pack and pretty much anyone doing it on a sane budget
Very carefully!
Yeah wasn’t sure exactly what the chemistry was, but ah nice, the heat okay with them?
If u have some solder skills it's doable
and a good soldering iron
you need at least a 65w one
cause those cells suck the heat out of the soldering iron
I've got 75W and soldered few of them successfully
And a 40 cal suit
xD
Surprised the cells don’t mind that much heat next to them
Oh and yeah, they are totally fine with it. Plus you get the benefit of being able to use thin fuse wires so the batteries will disconnect on a overload
I soldered many laptop or drill cells and if u solder it quick with powerfully iron, you heat it only in the specific place.
i have some super thin 0.071mm wire, that glows at 0.8A and breaks at 1A, which is perfectly fine with me, cause the max load would only be 50-100mA anyway.
I want a FLIR but none of my friends are house performance nerds like me
So I'd be buying it outright myself,
Merry Christmas HA Crew
So about A$600 is a hard pill to swallow
Even though my gut says it will definitely pay for itself several times over
Nothing cheaper that would attach to your phone or something like that?
That is the one that attaches to the phone
Discrete ones start around $900+
I massively underestimated how expensive FLIR is
Like a night vision camera?
The flir you got for the iPad was pretty good
I've seen a lot of electricians use it
Use it for doing monthly checks of the fuse boxes
What’s wrong with using your eyeballs?
Your eyes can't see background heat
Thermal
Not night vision
Flir have been market leaders for years
And they now how to charge for it
The materials used in thermal cameras are insanely expensive too, which doesn't help
I should coax my boss to buy one for the office
We got him to buy a logic analyzer already, I'm sure I can find a reason we need a thermal cam
I used a monocular in the military that was both nvg and flir in the same tube
50-50’s - was kinda hot
I read that as coax. Not coax. I wondered what the hell you were doing to your boss
hehehe
Will you approve my investment if we don't do things to you with the antenna cable?
They might be into that, though
Hm... maybe I should use the holidays for some updates...
ehh, sounds recent enough to me
Most should be fine. I expect gitea to have some cool updates, but it'd surprise me greatly if netcat had any new features. And this is triggered by me realizing a bug in code-server I've been annoyed with for a while was actually fixed 16 months ago...
... I wonder why deconz is in there... I don't use it, and I just pruned the images.
mhhm
I run watchtower to solve this problem, mine automatically update (If an automatic update breaks it, that just calls my attention to it to fix it) stops that maintenance debt from building up
Watchtower 🤢
Yeah... that's not for me, but if it works for you knock yourself out
every 2 weeks, who has time for that?!
I restart mine like once every couple of years
like a shitty sysadmin
By shouting?
Basically, yes
imagines town crier at atx’s house
I should automate it with ha
Send my wife a telegram notification when I do a compose pull
Beautiful. Almost looks fake
painter: you know, it needs something. I know, a giant moon!
Y'all should see the midnight sun then
It actually reminds me of the episode of Voyager where Chakotay uses the moon as a way to know if he’s dreaming
The giant, boxy, corporate-looking building detracts from the otherwise idyllic scene
I assumed it's a school
it looks like a painting
Tromsö?
Oh right, atx https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gävle_goat wtf?
Nice island, even with an airport
Oh! They got the goat this year! Maybe the gods won't punish us with draughts all summer then.
That is Swedish @glacial knot
Argh. I read it earlier and though I remembered Norway
well, you are both north. So you'llh ave to answer for their fun
It has been the subject of repeated arson attacks, and, despite security measures and the nearby presence of a fire station, the goat has been burned to the ground most years since its first appearance in 1966. As of December 2021, the goat has been damaged 38 times.
Don't mix us up with those Francophiles
Who are these people?
2005 is my favourite.
Burnt by unknown vandals reportedly dressed as Santa and the gingerbread man, by shooting a flaming arrow at the goat
2001 is good too
In 2001, the goat was burned down by a 51-year-old visitor from Cleveland, Ohio in the United States, who spent 18 days in jail and was subsequently convicted and ordered to pay 100,000 Swedish kronor in damages. The court confiscated his cigarette lighter with the argument that he clearly was not able to handle it. He stated in court that he was no "goat burner", and believed that he was taking part in a completely legal goat-burning tradition. After he was released from jail he returned to the US without paying his fine.
“I didn’t burn that goat, and if I did, it was totally legal!”
It does seem to have achieved “tradition” status, unwelcome as it may be
I bet pretty much everyone who isn't involved hopes for it to burn at this point. But it is a public safety problem.
ohh fck I bought the new macbook pro for 3500 $ if that was a good idea ....
🤢
but i heard its wonderfull for coding etc.

So is a 200 USD Chromebook 🤣
yest its critical
Heck, my Chromebook was $180 3 years ago, it is still my daily driver when I'm not in the office
ChromeOS is fine, but I do prefer galliumos
yes i had a chromebok too, but for api dev i need significantly more power
Yeah, all those curl calls can be exhausting
yest but that true and the greatest achievement of apples marketing
What's a laptop?
*computer
Oh right
It was even more pretentious
Made me want to yeet that kid over a mountain
Don't stoop to Star Wars fan territory. She's just doing her job.
There’s a part of me that wants to upgrade my 2020 MBP, but even with the deep discount I can get, I can’t bring myself to spend that much money for something that’s bigger and heavier in nearly every way
But you weren't alone in that...
I've been thinking of upgrading my 2013 MBP... but it actually works great
I do love my zbook g8 firefly, I should retry getting Linux on it after Christmas
If it doesn’t support the latest OS, I would upgrade
Yeah. That's the one problem with it. Can't debug mobile safari stuff anymore.
Even if you don’t need it for anything else, you start to lose compatibility with apps
did you had good experience with dev on a mac ?
Meh. I need Chrome, a terminal and maybe vscode.
Webdev - great. Low level C - good. Higher level - no idea.
"webdev" and "great" should not be in the same sentence
i thought that was just a bad joke but it does really exist..
-10°C here
BTW most popular method of car stealing is now a "suitcase"
Two devices which are signal extender between your hands-free key in your pocket or hall, and your car on the parking place
Yeah, which is why I'm considering building a Faraday keybox
Thank goodness for garages
Well, I have one, but it is full of my projects

And three cars in the parking lot outside
Good thing I do t have hands free
Optimizations that eliminate system stalls and improve overall responsiveness. Chrome books have this issue?
Got burnt down this year :)
Love that tradition. Its such a meme worthy thing.
They were put out to pasture
Briefcase car thefts would generally be out in public no?
Not at home
Unless your keys are near your front door.. hmmm
Although a perp standing on your porch is a lot more suspect than someone sitting next to you in a crowded cafe.
I'm glad I live in a relatively safe place where that sort of stuff doesn't even come into my mind
I don't even lock my wheels on my bike at the train station, nor take the lights off
If they’re powerful enough it’s simply just press on the handle to unlock, then press start. Then drive away
So no one would know
I think faraday cages require a ground. Thats a bit hard to do on the move in a shopping centre. 😉
I live in a shopping center?
and the cage doesn't need a ground to shield
depending on the material and what you want to shield with it, ground will be required to access (or leave) the cage
they dont, but its recommended
Home Assistant glow is clearly telling me I need to use less power 😂
continuous 2 kw drain with regular spikes to 4kw and electric cooking. You must have gas hotwater cos I dont see that kicking in. I would be worried about that continous drain. If you had solar that would consume all of it on a sunny day!
- My office (~770W), My PC (Which is bitcoin mining) and a home server (i5, runs home assistant and many other services)
- My gfs PC (~270W), also mining
- Pool pump, 530W
- CCTV Cameras/Router/4 access points/alarm system, 180W
there's still some continuous ~300W load that I have no idea what it could be, once mining becomes unprofitable it'll drop down to like 570W for my office, gfs pc will be off most of the time, but will still have that continual heavy load 🤷
No solar? Hope you are making heaps mining to cover the cost of the power!
could drop the HA onto a NUC?
Not currently, I'd like to get solar, have a nice large south facing roof, although being in the midlands in the UK isn't exactly optimal.
The mining profits are pretty good, works out about £10/day on the two cards, which actually covers the entire power bill for the house nearly, so that's cool.
The home server is running boatloads of other stuff apart from home assistant, there's 30TB of storage in there to start, a NUC wouldn't really be suitable I think
Actually, yes I do mostly @strange crag
Average wattage of my house is somewhere between 3200-4500w
see - move away from all that snow and ice and you wont need to have such a high power load 😉
haha, well heating is natural gas so there's no additional electrical usage for that
dang, got me beat
I peak at 12-14k
yeah - UK sux a bit for solar I guess.
When making dinner
you dont need a nuclear reactor to boil your eggs atx!
Maybe I do
we plan to get an electric car, so ... I'm coming for you 😂
looks fancy
In this country the max solar you can have for a household is around 5kw. If that is the case in your country then you might be in trouble, although I guess you could probably get more power from wind.
I haven't heard of a limit here, that said I think if you want a particularly large setup, you have to upgrade to 3 phase power
in trouble in that he will be having to keep paying the power company .
yeah - only so much you can get from single phase.
We have a 10kW limit for personal use. If it's over that you'll have to run it as business. though I'm unsure if there's some ways to math base load into it to lift the limit
Unless you get a batterygrid you shouldn't expect to be fully "off grid" without active planing for it either way
If I get solar panels I'll produce 14000kw per year
only cook when you aren't washing clothes. And only do either when there's sun and wind =.= no thank you
That would be 1/3 of my use
how did you calc that atx?
Funny enough, that'd probably knock me to zero almost exactly, I use around 1400kwh/mo
I put in my address, they tell me
who is they? is it a global calc or local to your provider?
I tried to do that, I put in my details and a salesman called me and booked an appointment, then proceeded to no call no show \o/
ongy - wonder if your 10kw is the same as my 5kw given that my power is 240v and yours is 110 (I think)
ahh ok so thats OK. Also shift key is a bit fujnny on this laptop
I wasn't making fun of the lower case 'w'. Even if I do that with people that use mb instead of MiB or MB 🙂
I'm saying that the difference between 1kW@110V and 1kW@230V is the amperage. It's still the same energy
It depends . In my country it'll disappear in seconds
Ah, MB, the unit where you can have no idea what the actual answer is. Best unit 😄
What do you mean? We’ve been quoted a 7kW. You can do higher as long as grid export is limited to 5kW or if you bump to 3 phase
it might be normalised, but we can only put in 24 x 250 Watt panels - thats about 6KW
Mega Bell 😉
kewl news to me. Would have thought they would want all the power and not limit it to 5kW.
It’s a limit with single phase here rather than them not wanting it
30kW if you can get 3 phase to the home
I’m guessing it’s a current issue
Yeah you can have 10kW as long as you don’t export more than 5kW. Or pay to have the electrical distributor to connect 3 phase to your home
And then benefit by you being able to add a electric car supercharger
who wants an electric car?? Not me
You don’t have 3phase in every home already?
Nope. No need to spend the money if you don’t need it
nope - only single phase
I do, much cheaper to run one
Guessing you drive longer distance then?
Yeah that’s fair then
I might not get one, just because it'll be my first car and they are a tad expensive for a first car, used Nissan leaf would be the one though if I do go that route
If you’re in the city then electric cars work
yeah - they are built for the city - no doubt about that
to be fair, if you're looking high end they also seem to work, the newer ones have hundreds of miles range and can tow too afaik
and with 20-80% charge times at less than 30 minutes, I don't think many people are gonna wanna drive like 300 miles without stopping for a toilet break 😂
they are getting better, but for county stuff they arent there yet.
Hundreds of miles is still useless for bush australia
Can be that far till the next charger lol
till the next town- and it might not have a charger!
I can go to the toilet in much faster then 30 minutes. Drove 750km the other week. Each way didn’t have stops longer than 15m even at petrol stops
ah yea, fair, I live in the UK and you're never more than like 10 miles away from a charger
most people dont take 30 minutes for a toilet break 😉
well, toilet/snack break 😄
I don’t want to do those same stops plus 30 minutes for a charge (since the stops won’t disappear just because I’m stopping for longer to charge)
That’s why you bring snacks with you on the drive
lol
Going 110kmh and just grab the lolly snacks and eat during the drive
Or after petrol go drive through McDonald’s and snack on the drive
Yeah, and all chargers at the station are already in use, and u have to wait next 30 minutes
Or they’re broken
I dunno why there are so many complaints of broken charge points...why do they keep breaking? petrol pumps seem more complicated and they aren't usually broken
when they get to the point where they swap out the battery in the same time it takes to fill a petrol tank then it would be worth it for the longer trips.
but they will probably do it like the swap n go gas bottles in that instead of 9kg of gas you only get 8.5kg
probably vandalism
Computers fail a lot more than a simple counter. Plus the fact a petrol station has someone there to monitor whilst a electric charger often doesn’t have anyone
You should see the Norwegian charger network @umbral cliff
makes sense I suppose, people more likely to vandalize unattended chargers
Probably like 10 people for 300km area
Every gas station has chargers too
To repair
Lucky
Too bad that would be impossible here. Since that would require investing in something for the middle of nowhere
guess that is only for the listed countries
Anything else would be strange
it was strange for me! lol
buy 2 and get twice the amount!! 😉
nice 🙂
yeah - not the same effect of a contiguous bunch of screens lol
Here's mine, still working on it 😄
I could understand if you're gaming that you'd wanna go for 3 or 9, but why 6? o.O
6 is the poor mans 9 ie on the way to 9
but you'd have the center of the game split between 2 monitors, 6 sucks like 2 does for gaming
I have one roof mounted one
no - 3 on top of 3
Thinking about two more
yea, 3 on top of 3 results in a horizontal split in the center
yes - just like atx has a horizontal split - and its not to shabby!
🤷 I'd have thought a horizontal split would cut your character in half in games, and look not good
I only game on one of the ultrawides btw (5120x1440@240hz is more than enough 😂)
Wait for screens sold by the metre
it would, but probably the join would be right where your aiming site would be. OTOH youi can use 3 monitors for the game and 1 for discord, one for browser, and a spare
until you can get thte last 3
ah yea, that's a good point, crosshair cut in half would be not good
Multi monitor gaming
We have about 5 to cover the whole of Sweden
Working on 5 customer systems at once
I can only game on a laptop - 17" screen @1920x1080 😦
yea, I don't do it tbh, doesn't look good, single good monitor, or VR, games don't really support multi monitors very well and you get distortion at the edges for super high FOVs even on an ultrawide, let alone across triple (I've tried it)
I just game on a 65" 4k
5 wouldnt even cover 1 state here! lol
IT was a slight exageration, but not by much
actually I tell a lie - it might cover Tasmania
There are some quick chargers at food places in the larger towns, but no where near enough
they are increasing the diesel price after new year, going to be record high, yet we still don't have a proper electric system to cope with everyone having electric cars
yeah - bring on the VR gaming! Occulus was going to be the ants pants, but sadly zuckerberg stuffed that idea
and my new hybrid will cost me more per month than my current diesel only (offset by cheaper running costs), they are not really making it attractive to switch, whilst also making it uncomfortable to not switch
yeah - I heard that the rest of the world wanted to phase out petrol and diesel in the near future. Gonna suck if they do it here tho
FB is a real problem for VR imo, it may even outright kill VR or just make it terrible. We know the Quest 2 is a £700ish headset subsidized by FB down to £300 by FB, and everyone is buying them. Dunno how any other manufacturers can compete on that basis.
You mean the act
Even tassie would support more than 5
Doubt we will for a while. Trucks and other stuff will push us till 2050 or more
oh yeah - forgot about that scum sucking state of asutralia!
I want a pure electric car, can charge at home. But a good one is getting onto close 75% or more of what my house cost
the hot air specialists
Hey it’s a nice territory
OUCH!
haha yea it's bonkers, I'm looking at buying a used nissan leaf and using that until something better comes along at a reasonable price. The leaf has big downsides though.
why do you think I said it - you are moving there lol
Mean!
yeah - but you love it lol
They will have to shot me if they want me to stop ride old diesels 😎
I would buy an electric car but the apartment im moving into doesn’t have electric car chargers in the carpark. So no use yet
Also that my bmw is still going very strong
It’ll eventually get an electric conversion when I have the time/ space/ money
I'll be a first time driver, so cheap and cheerful is the way to go. Used Nissan leaf seems to go for like £7k here, which isn't too bad
Just get an ex Uber Prius lol
yeah -0 how do you go 4wd in an electric car? No ground clearance, no big tyres for the rocks and mud - will kil all the joy
haha, those seem like more pain though, you have the maintenance problems of both a combustion and electric car, and they don't have a mode to run 100% on battery either for short runs
I’m sure there will be 4wd electric cars
Pfff hard terrain can spent whole battery in 5 km
Yeah. I still would probably go for a plug in hybrid for my next car. Because get electric for the short range but petrol for the distance
only thing is I do have the occasional 200 mile run I'd like to do, which the leaf will suck hard at
yeah - just plug into the nearest gumtree for a charge!
Yeah but in 10-20 years there may be better batteries available
I'll be too old for off road then
there will be better batteries in a lot less time than that
Maybe I'll wait for cheap crashed Toyota Mirai and convert my UAZ for hydrogen
Hydrogen would be nice
Hydrogen propelled UAZ would be nice 😎
I'm gonna free hydrogen more slowly little bit
until someone crashes into your car and it goes boom!
Eh never happened with lpg
Plus hydrogen is a fuel cell so different to combustion
he didnt mention fuel cell - so could have been another method
I mentioned Toyota Mirai , it is fool fuel cell
