What hardware you got

last cedar

And stop derailing the shit post channel with serious questions /s

#

I literally just changed hardware

pale shadow
#

I need to knooooo

last cedar
#

Ran on an optiplex 7010 with a 350t4 card, one pihole vm and a opn vm running on esx

pale shadow
#

I wanna virtualise pfsense high availability and clustering

last cedar
#

Now running on a 1220v3 e3 xeon bare metal

pale shadow
#

BARE METAL?!"

#

Naughty

last cedar
#

It pulls about 24 watts

jade tartan
#

ive never done pfsense

last cedar
#

So I can live with it being bare metal

jade tartan
#

i have my r710

#

i could

#

but

pale shadow
#

R710s are power suckers

jade tartan
#

mine espically

#

idle it's like 200w

last cedar
#

Using adguard as a plug in, so don't need a pihole vm anymore

pale shadow
#

I have 2x 710s and 1x r410

#

but i wanna get a r230

jade tartan
#

i also have 6 x 1tb hdds in raid o

pale shadow
#

why...

jade tartan
#

so my power consumption is higher

#

because they were free

last cedar
#

A 220 would be a nice modern ish opn box tbh

pale shadow
#

Why raid 0

jade tartan
#

FREEEEEEEEEEEEEE

last cedar
#

230 would also be nice

jade tartan
#

because i wanted to see what i could pull

pale shadow
#

RAID 6

last cedar
#

They are pretty efficient

jade tartan
#

oh sorry

#

it's raid 10?

#

or 01

#

one of those

last cedar
pale shadow
jade tartan
#

and the read is 1.6gb/s but the latency is meh

last cedar
#

The one with green lights is the opn box

jade tartan
#

i really want something like that

pale shadow
#

Why are the drives all not in order

hollow glacier
last cedar
#

Yes I know I have a supermicro fetish

pale shadow
jade tartan

i need to get a GOOD ups

I got a SMX1000i. With SMT front

pale shadow

I have to use Java 7

hollow glacier

pale shadow
#

I want idrac9

#

All our work servers use it, and its so sexy

jade tartan
#

i think idle what i'd need to handle is like 600w switch over

#

only for like 10 min tho

#

just enough to not let it power fail

pale shadow
#

what ups u got now

last cedar
#

Ooof, you probably want like a 1500VA/900W at absolute minimum

jade tartan
#

just some random retail no screen bs unit

pale shadow
#

You only need something that keeps every on long enough to shutdown

last cedar
#

Try and get pure sine wave, R710 psus don't like stepped or modified wave

#

Not sure how the later servers are though

jade tartan
#

word

#

good to know

pale shadow
#

Everything should be filtered anyways

jade tartan
#

i wish our mains here was filtered a little better

pale shadow
#

What you need is 3 phase power

#

with a tesla wall battery

jade tartan
#

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

#

yes

#

i agree

#

but that is EXPENSIVE

#

ill make an 18650 wall though

last cedar
#

I got the 3 phase, but no battery

jade tartan
#

i do want to bring in 3 phase if i can when i do build

last cedar
#

Pull a cable for it, if nothing else

#

Saves digging up again

pale shadow
#

imo all modern houses should have 3 phase redundant power, smart housing and a dedicated server room with hvac

#

A 3 floor underground car storage would be nice too

last cedar
#

Only 3 floors? :(

finite atlas
jade tartan

last cedar

#

I could actually maybe see me having 2 cars, max

pale shadow

I just want three lol

#

last cedar

I would love an old r32 or r33 skyline. And would need a works car

clear ferry

#

Just buy an epatraktor

pale shadow
#

Just buy a gotterdammerung

last cedar
#

If I could afford one I would probably buy one

#

Heavily moded ones are like about half what house cost, would rather have a basically stock one

#

I wouldn't get one solely for making 1000bhp like some people set out to do

#

I just like the music

pale shadow
#

1000bhp

last cedar
#

Rebuilding it after every pull is annoying though 🤣

pale shadow
#

i think that'd be the point

last cedar
#

Would be nice to have a bit less fire spitting and only 400bhp, but all the music (probably less wastegate chatter though)

#

That would be SWEET

#

But it will never happen

#

Could possibly swing a volvo R though, within a couple of years

finite atlas
#

too bad you have no unlimited speed limit

last cedar
#

Who thought a speedo that tops out at 180 was a good idea? Hahaha@finite atlas

#

That thing is crazy

finite atlas
#

its fun

#

the manufacturer thought that 180 would be enough

#

i find it funny that it tops out at 250 and he keeps accelerating without knowing the speed

last cedar
#

Mmmm

#

Stopped by the police

#

How fast were you going?

pale shadow
#

In the UK they want to put mandatory speed limiters on cars

finite atlas

Iirc new volvos are limited to 112mph

finite atlas

most german cars are limited to 250kmh

last cedar
#

#

finite atlas
#

last cedar
#

Well, yeah :D

finite atlas
#

with a proper unbricked car, you can do 400

last cedar
#

Still has to punch a sizable hole though the air though

finite atlas
#

yeah

dusky plank
last cedar
#

Chiron does 430 ish right?

finite atlas
#

already going 200 in my brothers 1.5 tdi is amazing, i cant imagine how 300 would be

finite atlas
dusky plank
#

300 is almost full tunnel vision

finite atlas
#

i dont think you need a special license for anything above 350, but i dont know it for sure

dusky plank
finite atlas
#

the law is, that you should be able to drive your car safely with sane limits
if you drive 350 and cause an accident, guess who's fault its gonna be, even if it wasnt really you

pale shadow
finite atlas
#

for the uk, thats a sane limit
however i wouldnt buy a car with such a limit

last cedar
#

Never driven that fast tbh, 170kmh only. I can imagine that 300 would be tunnel like though

finite atlas
#

200 is already somewhat tunnel like

dusky plank
#

according to the law everything above 250hp is unreasonable and thus illegal then

finite atlas
#

and little bumps and rocks on the road are rather scary

dusky plank
#

😄

finite atlas
#

nope

last cedar
# pale shadow 70mph

Not sure it would help, frontal crashes at a lot less than 70 can be fatal. I guess they have better statistics than I do though

pale shadow
#

They don't care about crashes

dusky plank
#

💸

last cedar
#

They just don't want people speeding?

#

It is not designed to help prevent deaths?

finite atlas
dusky plank
#

ok, so no speed locks

#

imagine driving your porsche with 300 and still get taken over by a bugatti with 200 more

finite atlas
#

however, you can play lead foot on the autobahn all day long

#

other cars may clog up the lane and some parts of the autobahn has speed limits

dusky plank
#

I mean, the bugatti will fly away with the littlest shock but this power is mental..

finite atlas
#
  • the insame fuel consumption going that speed
#

my brother drove 200 on a 3 lane autobahn for an hour and had to slow down about 10 times, cause other slower drives clogged the lane
he also burned through like 20L of diesel

last cedar
#

Didn't clarkson say a squash court of air per second? That would mean a lot of fuel 🤣

finite atlas
#

i think the bugatti had something like 120L/100km at max speed

last cedar
#

Probably a big tank too

dusky plank
#

too bad there is no kerosene available in public

finite atlas
#

ethanol is

last cedar
#

E85 was pretty cheap here

finite atlas
#

the W16 bugatti Chiron has a 100L fuel tank

last cedar
#

Bearing in mind you use 30% more liter for liter

#

But now it is the same price as 95

#

For some silly reason

finite atlas
#

but tbh, i'd be more than happy with an Audi A2 1.2 tdi

#

3.5L/100km, all aluminium and needs very low maintenance, i love that bad looking car

fallow karma
#

Merry Xmas. Speed limit? Philosophy here is: No cops or speed trap nearby- no limit. All speed traps are on Google maps, only problem is unmarked police car. No risk no fun . Anyway, worst penalty for speeding is to loose your license , but on the other hand driving without license is only 100€ penalty, (except you will cause an accident or riding drunk) so...

dusky plank
#

you can lose your car here too

pale shadow
#

we can be imprisoned

umbral cliff
#

We have hidden mobile speed cameras, they look like a normal car till you get close and see the camera gear inside. Depending on speed it’s either a fine, loss of licence, car impound, court hearing

clear ferry
# last cedar Probably a big tank too

Fun thing about large engines and small tanks, my father had a 73 thunderbird, with a 7.5l engine or so, it had a 50l tank, you could see the needle move when you pushed the accelerator

last cedar
#

50 liter tanks need to die

#

Current octavia has a 50 liter tank, it feels silly filling it at half full, in like 5 seconds 🤣

clear ferry
#

I wasn't surprised my friend thought the xc90 was a guzzler

Because it only has a 50l tank

#

umbral cliff

Lowest I’ve ever gotten in range was 80km. Because I had to do a lot of driving but no time to actually fill up

Thankfully trucks in urban are relatively common here for now

Just a guess….but I would say pickups were traditionally for the country areas. They were work trucks. Sometime in the 80s, it became fashionable to raise them and go 4 wheeling

It kinda took off from there.

#

Then soccer moms who didn’t want to drive vans made SUVs a thing

strange crag
# umbral cliff If you make your truck tall for no reason then anything can look small

they are tall for ground clearance - gotta stop your sump getting ripped out by rocks. OTOH in the city people drive cars that have been lowered so much that they have to take 5 minutes and go diagonally over speed bumps! Bloody idiots! What makes me laugh is that people in the city with 4wd that also take those speed bumps very slow. Also idiots as you can take them at normal speed even in a standard car.

forest edge

#

Even those people with offroad cars can cruise over them at 40k while people in a Yaris have to come to a stop and roll

umbral cliff
#

I wouldn’t dare go over a speed bump at more than 30-40kmh. Too easily damage my bumper or suspension lol

#

Sure might be fine for a small one, but one misjudgement and boom

hushed basalt
#

Good design of carparks is better than putting in crappy speed bumps that just wreck suspension of small vehicles

#

Yeah some outside Bunnings near me I have to come to almost a complete stop

#

The amount of car parks I've seen with intersections on them that are impossible for 2 cars to go through at once

#

When they could just remove 1 or 2 car bays on the entry to make it easier and safer and quicker

#

But I suspect there's some "metric" that says every car bay generated $X amount of revenue per year

#

Ignoring the fact that people will be reluctant to do their shopping at places where the car parks are mental

umbral cliff
#

Side topic, what did the home automation Santa get you all for Christmas lul

hushed basalt
#

Life tip. Always look at the big picture and ignore "local optimisations"

#

umbral cliff
hushed basalt
#

No not the parking fees

#

But like, say someone would have done a calculation at the shopping centre design stage

umbral cliff
#

Ahh shopping centre income

#

Yeah that makes sense

#

I misunderstood

hushed basalt
#

And said "80 stores and 1000 bays with a store aggregate revenue is $50m/year, "

#

To be honest I have no idea what they do but I strongly suspect that's the justification for car parks that squeeze in every single bay possible while making them impossible to navigate

umbral cliff
#

Even though I’m sure 990 bays but better traffic flow would generate the same amount of money too

hushed basalt
#

I suspect more

#

Turnover speed of carparks is far more valuable than total capacity imo.

#

Slightly less bays but faster turnover = more money

umbral cliff
#

I guess it’s harder to quantify in plain numbers as better flow is more wishy washy than saying 1 spot generates $X so 1000 generates $1000X

hushed basalt
#

Yep

#

It's like when people focus on how fast some software runs in one stage

The basic premise is a fictional manufacturing plant that's failing

#

And how they need to learn how to do less to do more, rather than make every machine become utilised/make as much as possible as fast as possible

umbral cliff
#

Yeah I guess big picture vs small picture too right? Like instead of just focusing on individual machines operating at <100% efficiency look at the whole plant as to why it’s dropped

As i mechanic i often watch yt clips, where people do some car repairs. I always wonder why in America middle size truck (substitute of European eg. Iveco daily or Renault Mascot) need 7.4 L engine. Renault has 2.3 and Iveco 3.0 . Both has about 180HP and 400Nm torque , that's More than enough

glacial knot

fallow karma

But i kinda like American automotive. Everything is simple, easy accessible ( big means lot of space everywhere ) . Did i mention about simplicity? In '90 while in EU everything was multipoint injected, dohc with 4valve per cylinder, aluminum blocks with output about 60hp per liter , in US they still had 2.5 Iron Duke , and OHV V8's with output about 30Hp per liter. I don't know nothing about reliability of those US engines, but i think it was better than some of European

umbral cliff
#

Yeah European ones are designed to reduce emissions too. US doesn’t care as much

fallow karma
#

Not true , i think first EGR valve was obligatory in US

#

But in EU fuel economy always was more important than in US

#

Russian automotive is similar to US. Simple, easy to fix . BTW most of their engineering designs are derivative from Ford AA, because Russian produced it under license. So if u have a UAZ or Volga and take the engine out, bolt pattern of the gearbox is the same as on early Ford Sierra, or Taunus.

The court confiscated his cigarette lighter with the argument that he clearly was not able to handle it. not 5

#

but you have done well on the contiguous bit though

snow hedge

I could understand if you're gaming that you'd wanna go for 3 or 9, but why 6? o.O

strange crag
#

6 is the poor mans 9 ie on the way to 9

snow hedge
#

but you'd have the center of the game split between 2 monitors, 6 sucks like 2 does for gaming

I have one roof mounted one

strange crag
#

no - 3 on top of 3

clear ferry
#

Thinking about two more

snow hedge
#

yea, 3 on top of 3 results in a horizontal split in the center

strange crag
#

yes - just like atx has a horizontal split - and its not to shabby!

snow hedge
#

🤷 I'd have thought a horizontal split would cut your character in half in games, and look not good

#

I only game on one of the ultrawides btw (5120x1440@240hz is more than enough 😂)

Wait for screens sold by the metre

strange crag
#

it would, but probably the join would be right where your aiming site would be. OTOH youi can use 3 monitors for the game and 1 for discord, one for browser, and a spare

#

until you can get thte last 3

snow hedge
#

ah yea, that's a good point, crosshair cut in half would be not good

IT was a slight exageration, but not by much

There are some quick chargers at food places in the larger towns, but no where near enough

#

they are increasing the diesel price after new year, going to be record high, yet we still don't have a proper electric system to cope with everyone having electric cars

strange crag

and my new hybrid will cost me more per month than my current diesel only (offset by cheaper running costs), they are not really making it attractive to switch, whilst also making it uncomfortable to not switch

I would buy an electric car but the apartment im moving into doesn’t have electric car chargers in the carpark. So no use yet

#

Also that my bmw is still going very strong

#

It’ll eventually get an electric conversion when I have the time/ space/ money

I'll be a first time driver, so cheap and cheerful is the way to go. Used Nissan leaf seems to go for like £7k here, which isn't too bad

Maybe I'll wait for cheap crashed Toyota Mirai and convert my UAZ for hydrogen

Plus hydrogen is a fuel cell so different to combustion

he didnt mention fuel cell - so could have been another method

I mentioned Toyota Mirai , it is fool fuel cell
