So not much reward
Eitherway
I'm happy with my salary
I'd like double but yaknow
I'm 21
Not a grad. Low skill set
Suits are nice
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Those shoes are horrendous
wingtips are neat, but just not those
That said, wear what you like and don't get stuck on other people's opinions
those shoes. only some people can pull it off
those shoes are definitely my jam haha
i mean its unique-ish
I mean, these are the last pair of shoes I bought, I am 100% that guy.
I'm also 6'2" with tattoos, a nose ring, a big beard and a shaved head. I am a caricature.
I like those better since they are a bit more casual. The first ones blend the line between formal and casual a bit too much for me. But yeah each to their own and what works for them. I hate tats and nose rings too and can't even grow a beard
I should get back into the tattoo studio soon
you ever worry that some jackhole is going to fug around and pull on your nose ring?
thats why i dont do piercings. some fugtard would fug around, and then i have to kick someone's ass. and im lazy. i dont wanna have to.
Did you say prince Albert
oh hell naw. mini-me definitely gets no piercings.

Anyone here know what happened to PoWifi? Seems like there would be lots of uses for home automation projects and managing small powered devices but it seems to have gone the way of the dodo… https://news.cs.washington.edu/2015/06/04/uws-powifi-could-power-the-internet-of-things-says-mit-technology-review/
Power over wifi

I haven't even heard of it, and I've worked with networking and Poe for 20 years
I remember reading about it and similar ideas many times over the last decade, it's been pretty consistently vapourware
I suspect the "minor" issues of power loss, efficiency, and safety concerns have got in the way
On days like this I usually use 110kwh per day @last cedar today I'll finish well below that but still

That would be €36 for power alone today
Sounds like something Tesla invented but evil corps buried
My monthly usage was only 455 last month
Thanks to the pellets
Hoping to heat a little with computers once new windows are in :)
Powifi sounds like some nfc thing
Tired: Patching the dry-wall in my basement
Wired: Stupid home automation projects
^ "Hey google, turn on my christmas lights at sunset"
how do you manage to use so much electricity?
It's the raspberry pi cluster.
the realsitic limit is in the range of mW
you could also do it fairly easy your self without needing a transmitter, just leech power of existing radio bands
We don't question what atx uses electricity around here
Rumor says it's some sort of a life force thing but no one is sure and no man dares to ask
I still use 30% less than the average household my size
+30?
but for what?
Heating, water, cooking, servers, lights
I only have four full-time servers
And 4 switches
The rest are powered as needed

i have a raspberry pi b3 as my home assistant server, thats currently not plugged in
I have a dell r510 + a mini itx server, plus a hpe Edgeline 300 + a rpi 3 + 2x hp 5900af + 2x hp 2530
Running always
we use about 14 kWh a day, that includes my 2 grandparents and me in a 3 story house
I have a dozen other switches, a blade enclosure, a couple of itanium boxes plus a dl380 gen8 and dl380gen9 and a few other boxes in standby
Not plugged in?
not plugged in into power
i'm a dumb person, so my house can be dumb aswell
i only have it, to lure my vacuum cleaner out of its hidden corner
i only need the pi for like 15 min every 2 weeks
Where do I get support for Ledenet cloud being down?
I'd suggest not buying cloud products
they seem to have some incompatibility with the ntp server, so they immediately issue another time sync request
My phone is connected to the wifi, my Alexa's are connected, and my Sylvania lights are also connected.
not really keen with the new dashboard.
I understand combing supervisor and config together but putting stuff like 3 parent categories up seems too compressed and more complex
not to mention unless you have updates the new config tab looks kind of bare
Nobody here can/will help with some random cloud service being on fire again

I’ll help but it’s gonna involve fire

you kno the r510 is notorious for power sucking
Accurate image of r510
It's 250w power draw is nothing compared to my 10000w draw when I'm cooking
is the r510 a dual psu or a single
Dual, with x5660s, 128GB ram and 14 drives plus 10g add-on card
My storage, 20 odd containers, two VMs plus all my cloud synchronisation from multiple sources
are you doing multi-raid?
there's a reason the datacenter threw it out
I'm doing ZFS
I don't mind, I work on multi petabyte software raid systems
You should see my RX6600
Show me
Or the EVA5000 I threw out
I want a home data centre
Or the RX8640 I rejected
Answer me this
Management and User on same switch?
For this setup, yes
HISSSSS
look at that museum
Don't worry, I have more years of network experience than you have years of speech
Final question

VLANs for Mgmt and User or two separate switches with vlans
@clear ferrybetter take better care of those dvd r's.. wouldn't want ya losing data...
For home use, vlans, for proper environments, physically separate OOBM
i like u
a lot of what you learned over the years is also completely useless knowledge now lol
you're old right?
shit from the 90s doesnt really help you much these days
Thank goodness I learn new products every two months then
word
I'm even NSX certified now
Really??? When it comes down to it, lot of new stuff is friendly abstractions over old tech. See K8S as the prime example these days. It's hilarious watching K8S experts watch in awe when the old school folk can get down and dirty a few levels down when the abstraction inevitably breaks!
Its catalyst smh
one sec
i meant knowing the tricks of hardware and CLI shit from old systems isnt really that relevant. no argument against knowing underlying concepts is a good thing
You say that, but when that 25 year old system breaks at the bank, they are very glad I'm a savant
these conversations make me convinced that most of the gear you people use was found in a dumpster
savant? you misspelled masochist
Psssh, I like it
I have since discovered my home ones are not catalyst, those are the work ones
hence masochist
Told you 🤢
But its not linksys!
They are from the merge
grumble grumble
A friend of Uncle has tried numerous times to quit a job maintaining a Fortran app in a fairly large finance house, and they keep getting her back. Old school knowledge tends to get more valuable!
I was going to buy a bunch of these at one point
Thankfully I've only had to touch three of those switches in my life, they all got replaced
but catalyst looks ugly;
They pull out a few pensioners here to fix zseries mainframes once in a while
fite me
I maintained racks full of those once. Still break out in a cold sweat if RSTP is mentioned!
Why not do RVSTP
They behave properly though, unlike ACI that is a fucking bile infested pissbucket
Nexus is probably the creme of Cisco, after 2 years of firmware that is
RSTP was the state of the art at the time.
Mstp or gtfo
i do this at home anyways
I remember when a friend working at a competitor had their network go boom. A customer wanted two connection to two switches, which was provided....
The customer then put in a 3Com switch connected to both which dropped BDPU packets. Cue a massive meltdown
Bpdu filtering
@clear ferry did you go to a greybeard conference and invite them all to this server?
Why? You're guaranteed they're going to break in silly ways. I use Unifi for wireless, but movedto Mikrotek for switches for my own sanity.
i like unifi for home use
if i was deploying for businesses then prob a bad idea tho
If they put as much effort into making the basics reliable as they did for AR, they'd be epic switches!!
unless it's like a coffee shop
atx's version of fighting is projectile vomit
I had a Unifi setup go bang today when I updated the PSK... Had to remove the network and recreate.
Psk 🤢
The backup done before the change didn't work.
802.1x or gtfo
unifi controller hosted on a pi hidden in the toilet of starbucks using free wifi just sayin
Well, my brother started calling me Ralph as I broke the internet.
lmfao
boooo
He shoulder surfed me while we verified the PSK, and the APs weren't accepting connections. Removing the SSID and readding worked.
Sounds like regular unifi code quality
i would've pointed them to a new controller
funny enough, UI and their UI bugs are pretty common
Surprised you didn't brick them
Yup, their QA is crap :(
my unifi doorbell took a shit and they warrantied but wanted me to send the old one first
a few emails back and fourth and it still took almost 2 weeks to get a new one
That tends to be how its done
When they're setup and working, they are reliable.
Scared shitless doing upgrades though! Something always breaks.
i love my 100% unifi home network but i also dont do a bunch of complicated shit
i have an IoT vlan and ssid and that's about it
i refused to buy their rackmount PoE+ tax
so i 3d printed an adapter to make a non rackmount fit lol
I'd like to see a rackmount for the poe injectors
publicly available
kinda fucky
oh u got aswitch
it's just a baby rack
it doesnt look right
should have got a wall mounted one
Or a whole ass cab
those short ones on wheels make me think of ottoman's
spray paint
I still have the little 8 port 60w Unifi switch here at my parents place. Will be replaced with a Mikrotik when the one I want is back in stock :/
so 2024
just give em a draytek router
Probably :(
accurate
i bought one of their new beta unifi dream router's for my mom
blegh
you are thinking of a different product
it looks kinda weird
you look kinda weird
i thought the dream router was rackmount
facts
you dont know their product line then
or is it dream machine im thinking of
they make a UDM which looks just like above but is worse and costs $300
then they make a UDMP which is a rackmount and includes an NVR with 1hdd slot
again i prefer pfsense stuff
that's the device in my rack above
then UDR is the $79 deal
idk why they priced it so low when it's better than their $300 UDM
very weird
then buy a netgate device or build one
because its ugly
u dumb
more expensive than an edgerouter
i tried to convince work to give me one
and they were like
maybe
but ask in 6 month
Can we all agree Sonicwall is shit tho
i thought they were pretty popular with sadmins
Are Sonicwall still a thing? Haven't seen then mentioned in years!
We got a customer thats stuck in a 5 year support contract
with 1 final year left
then we're giving them a pfsense box
Still haven't bothered with PFSense. Generally use Debian hosts as my gateways as I know how to make them a blackhole.
been contemplating about using zigbee stuff at my mothers place for a more ease of use but holy hell as I dive down the rabbit hole of which coordinator to use with which software to communicate with HA it seems daunting and confusing lol
I think that’s why folks like zwave
More expensive, but guaranteed to be local and minimal screwing around with brands/incompatibilities
not to mention zigbee pro and 2.4ghz fight with each other..
i am very happy with the zooz stuff i've gotten so far
zwave is just too pricey. wifi is same or slightly above in price over zigbee
frankly for a parents setup something stupid simple like hue isnt a bad idea if they just need lights + motion
i got my mom a hue hub and she managed to get it working with siri and she's basically helpless
lol
I want to connect a bunch of door sensors
Oh?
to tell when door is open/closed?
the reed ones or recessed
granparents old house, has seperate garages and workshop
lmao that gif
https://www.amazon.com/Recessed-Invisible-Security-SmartStart-Required/dp/B082PT71MM/ i was thinking about these
for access doors
maybe not that exact one.. i want it to do tilt too
i don't need recess but 35 for one is outrageous
ur outrageous
can get a 4pack of zigbee for less than that
true dat
DIY is always cheaper if you undervalue your time both before installation and followup support
just watched a video on the newest sonoff zigbee 3.0 dongle that is listed as comfirmed that works with zha and zigbee2mqtt yet the review said it was a turd and wouldn't connect to most zigbee stuff lol
Im just here thinking if i want to spend £100 on a lightswitch
is zigbee still considered DIY?
No, but it seems that way
true dat
I got a device or two, controller, serial adapter, etc and decided it was too much work
they need to hurry up and release the wifi meshing alternative
ew mesh
if you want mesh your stuck between zigbee and zwave, one too iffy and the other too expensive.. it's bs
You have to remember smart home is still relatively stuck between where it needs to be
don't confuse smart home with your stinky finger
you what
the only limit with smart home is time and money
you can pretty much do anything you want...
Which is why you get iffy technology and expensive technology
not everything smart home is one or the other
just this particular thing really
what the hell is this
Resembling old suzuki carry, this revolutionary idea for a small transport vehicle both cute and versatile will be out by 2022. Please give your comments. Due to solar roof, it can be charged from outlet or just by parking and waiting (of course longer but good for occasional drivers).
Please visit https://electricbrands.de/en/ for more inform...
futuuuuure
I was going to say "well, you can render anything", but then she got in
can already picture it laying on it's side on the side of the road
steering wheel accidentally broke off
I am kind of surprised it took this long to start making battery powered UTV like Polaris etc
electric golf carts been around for years so it's not like they couldn't have made some prior to lithium lol
I found out the other day our smart electrical meter is zigbee compatible. Just barely anything is zigbee power compatible
which one and what state are you in?
maybe mine uses the same
I think many are via the energy profile
In Vic. I can’t remember the model name off the top of my head. All I know is the name is [name] 501
Wish that could be easily integrated
My Rainforest Eagle connects to it over Zigbee, and it has an integration
I looked into that. Looks to be out of stock on their website for the last 6 months
does z2mqtt not support them?
I'm still rocking the Eagle-100, which offers local support. The Eagle-200 switched to cloud-only
Cloud only 🤢
there's a nice container solution that parses the data and makes it available via MQTT
yeah, looks like the -200 is out of stock. sigh
so glad i don't have to water my lawn lol
anyways, do you ever look at your network segmentation and ip allocations and wonder if you should just re-do them for better subnets?
Can someone tell me why the philips hue bridge is not poe
has anyone here ever installed soffit lighting? 😛
I would guess their average client base doesn't understand PoE and it's not worth the manufacturing cost.
^^
grumble grumble
Is it worth hunting for the 100 used?
Could see if there’s something that converts poe to whatever the hue wants
I got mine years ago, no idea if there's a used market
the -200 surely isn't an upgrade
i kno but it should be native
The $5 extra cost to be used by <1% of customers is pointless to them
i think its like 2 jumper wires
Until Poe starts being a consumer level thing and not just a prosumer level then it wouldn’t happen
i am now opening my hue bridge
it's a bit more than that to do it without being a hazard
Should have that bit. It’s not uncommon for anything nowadays
its one of those in the garden shed bits
Especially something that shouldn’t be opened by an average consumer
but its reaching 2am and i dont want to go outside
(Plus torx just doesn’t strip like Phillips)
i still like my flatheads
Bubbling up old question -- anyone have experience with soffit lighting? I'm curious if anyone has ever seen adjustable rgb lights for gable ends.
Does HA support multiple network interfaces
gable ends?
That's off topic on #the-water-cooler 🙂 but yes
I think? Now I'm not sure anymore o.0 worst case slap nginx in front /shrug
Just trying to direct connect huebridge to it
There's a handshake involved with PoE. It's more than just "2 jumper wires"
I believe that "Passive" 24v PoE, like Unifi uses, is really just power that's on all the time. 802.3af/at involves a handshake
ngl didnt look into the standards for it
just looked at some rano circuits on google images
Yes, good point: I was talking within the context of 802.3xx
Unifi was in the process of transitioning everything to 48v 802.3af/at, so there may not be passive 24v-only devices anymore
triangle ends
Is there anything you don’t 🤢
You?
Passive Poe was a massive mistake
Unifi in general is a massive mistake
atx likes HP servers. And raspberry pies. They have the same quality 😉
don't diss rpi's like that.. far superior over HP
@clear ferry seems there is an XC40 recharge option from work (but believe it is only for the people who work in the office)
420km on a charge though 🦝
The V60 T6 was a flat out no for me, because I didn't work in thr office, and wouldn't gain me any electric range over the octavia either
I don't get why we have different vehicles either.... But y'kno. Office politics
Their quality control is shit…. One of our batches of thin clients….
just wait till they upgrade you to this #the-water-cooler message
I hope you used their new OS option 😉
Let’s just say that we had to open them all and do something stupid
Big comp manu's go through phases every decade or so. they will have a short stretch of producing well then go back to being shit, and they alternate between one another.. a whole conspiracy working together to sell more garbage than non
Because most failed to boot
one of the option modules on t640/t540?
yea there is a thin bed sheet seperating the two.. duh!
Xc40 is interesting, but way to small, great couple car though
it's fun with 400HP electric
There may or may not have been a chip we had to push down to push it into place
That fixed the dead clients
Eh, the Tesla is fun to drive for 10 minutes, then you realise the car is shit to drive, I'll take my 407bhp hybrid
😂 I assume it's the option modules. They are finicky. Took us a day to find out that they don't connect properly when we try to plug them in without screwing them down. Because they appear socketed when they aren't =.=
ugh i really hope i didn't make a mistake going down the zigbee path
Seriously, Tesla is like driving in a bread box, with wheels
Ah fuck it you can FOA the email with the info and NDA
wut? wtf tesla you been in that is like that? lol
we had the XC40 with 400HP. It's still Volvo quality. Not Tesla
Yah it was a stupid chip you just pushed down with your thumb and all was good to go for the life of the unit
I've driven 2x model s and one model X, based on that the model 3 must be horrible
the 3 is the only one worth getting
Everyone had a f you HP face that day
t640 powered and fully connected over the USB-C is fun though
It will probably be good yes, haven't tried it, only v90, XC60 and xc90
er not the 3. the model S
Model s is shite
Build quality is horrible, the seats are like bricks and the suspension is very American
my dad just goes up to our usual dealer and asks him to borrow cars. Though he tries not to drive the ones he wouldn't want to afford too much^^
I'm looking forward to the xc100
oh, they are making one even larger than the 90?
Apparently
S is not shit, although I don't like the new steering wheel in the plaid
might as well buy an american brand at that point
suspension is very american? wtf does that mean lol
Did I not tell you about the American car review I was reading, where one car won because it has 19 cup holders instead on 18
Muuuuurica
tabloids ftw
sounds about right
Narrator : it was shitty
dunno our roads are generally smooth.. never been in one off road
feels like being on a boat, but still not comfortable
yea, if you only go straight for hundreds of kilometers, it doesn't matter /shrug

it's not about road quality and even out bumps. It's about how it feels on curved roads
it's not suppose to be a Cadillac. don't buy a sports car for the smoothness
You should drive a car with active suspension once 😂
been driving full size trucks for long enough lol
lol don't need a vehicle to make me feel i'm not driving as fast or taking a turn as hard as I am
plus i got a motorcycle.. wtf would active suspension do that would be any better than leaning? lol
kind of what I pictured all your roads being like to complain about the suspension on a tesla lol
Yeah build quality is a huge issue. Seen so many photos/ videos of panels just not matching
Tbh Tesla makes me think it’s the apple of cars. Wants to be super exclusive, make everything secretive, pay extra for anything, lock you in, sometimes a horrible design
Ooof :/
Have a friend who had two s and now a 3, he said the build quality has improved immensely after they moved production to China
The S was horrible
Who the heck thought putting the wipers buried in the menu was a smart idea
Are you only saying that because you are 8 meters tall?
Long you mean @last cedar
You should see the etron, subscription to have matrix headlights and navigation
(better) rear stear assist on the new Mercedes S class is a subscription as well
it's dumb
that's normal. Premium hotel will have everything minor thing as surcharge as well
if you are already shelling out that much money, you either don't care or have someone else pay. Why not milk you a bit more?
20€/d hotel? Free wifi is a given
200€/d? Yea, gotta fork over 20€ extra for that wifi
think your friend just has bad luck, I rarely run across quality complaints when it comes to tesla just bitching about subscription and previous owner headaches
Americans just aren't used to production quality
It's been a constant issue with Tesla. Their quality is far from the production quality of established manufacturers in the price class
No, Tesla is one of the most popular EVs in Norway, I know close to a dozen people who have had to replace the engines on their Tesla's, some more than once
The doors sag terribly
maybe cause the transport to there predamaged them?
I mean no wonder shit falls off lol
More likely because the Americans have to sign NDA when the get their Tesla's repaired
So you don't hear about it

lol nda
your just mad cause you only got to really experince the cheaper tesla's and not the better ones
Yeah, the one Tesla model s ludicrous was so cheap
Also because we have 50% off EVs here they are actually quite cheap
there is a cheaper variant of the s lol
not to mention not sure what changes have to be made to pass your road laws
what you get may be something entirly diffrent all together
may say S or 3 or X but is much like how imports here are not the same as they are in thier home country
well it's true and your a fool to not believe it
look at cars from like japan etc
radical changes
You mean putting the startling steering wheel on the right side
That is true for American > rest of the world for all cars
Audi looks the same in all countries, except America
I doubt there is 0 changes made from something coming out of sea to eu
Heck the Audi 200 us edition is horrible
Small things like mirror and firmware changes though. Wouldn’t be motor or door stuff
looks like the differences are purely for better standards in the EU https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/3m92gp/what_is_the_difference_if_any_between_a_us_spec/
12 votes and 11 comments so far on Reddit
That’s stupid. Glad bmw changed their mind doing subscriptions for CarPlay
it could be many things.. laws tend to have fine print thus messes with alot of stuff
Oh also the fact the USA allows same coloured taillights as indicators
Which is weird
.s/weird/dumb/

I mean we had cars before there was even lights..
must be nice to suddenly get cars only after they evolved years later lol
you do know that cars aren't an american invention, right? 😂
he didn't
you do know we mass them before other right?
yea, some americans think Ford invented them 😂
Yes? Your comments still don't match with history in any sensible way
optimized air resistance
it helps
you still get that much snow?
Ford was only 10 years behind. a decade is nothing in the 1800's

also the problems with the tail lights and turn signals being the same color was more of a eu and italy thing and not us
guess you all don't look at the vehicles in front of you
which that bean emoji is so fitting lol
Turn signals in Europe are amber, tail lights are red
yea since the 60's
and article I just ran across broke it down about the studies conducted over there which lead to the change and addition of the ambre color
https://autouniversum.wordpress.com/2018/03/22/the-germans-arent-just-cutting-corners-on-emissions/ history isn't showing me the main one I found
I had found a much older article that went indepth, trying to find it
Thanks
love how the article just bashes the "American style" turning indicators every second sentence
it's 2018
so yea modren views are going to be biased
the older article wasn't like that, it was more unbiased
I don't get why chrome hand picks what it adds to your history list
youmean, the other one didn't read the data the decision was based on?
makes no sense, had this issue the other day trying to hunt down something i already opened
so even that article talks about an "international" study.. which means non-us
that was done in the 60's
at the beginning it talked about ours being around 2008 etc
at this point it's a whole diffrent breed of drivers so what is considered "best" now wasn't always the case then etc
😂 yes, you guys can't be arsed to use the indicators. So it doesn't matter much
and there is truth in that, but i am sure every country has thier lot
Are you calling the muricas for BMW users @glacial knot ?
I wonder if there are stats. I bet tesla collects them. Our drivers ed is vastly different from the US after all
Nah. Ignorant.
don't think it would tell you anything.. the system in every country is too diffrent. sure everyone has roads etc but the layout and everything is diffrent
we didn't even have circles or whatever roundabouts as they call them till more recently
Look kids Big Ben
and you talk about decades behind 😂
thats not a behind thing
7900 roundabouts in the US, that is how many i have to pass to get from Oslo to Fredrikstad
No one has invented circles yet, where you live?!
most americans hate the roundabouts and want the 4 way stops they replaced back
yes, worse is better. Because we always did it that way
just diffrent drivers
I love the British roundabouts, with 5 lanes and stop lights
our 4 ways aren't small enough to fit in someone's living room
People who don't indicate when leaving a round about need to be shot, IMO
that's another thing.. we don't have roundabouts where people can just stay in them lol
Have gun turrents on every one, shooting people who don't indicate
seen one two lane roundabout but most are single lane
that sounds more dangerous then anything
Most in Oslo are three, but the five or more British ones are great, when I remember I'm on the wrong side of the road
Hey I’m a bmw driver and I use my indicators!
that's another thing.. car manufactures aren't required to make the tail turn indicators the same as the brake lights yet most of import one's make it that way for their us variant lol
that's kind of a not our fault thing there
Hwat
Why would it be an oil eater?
It’s a 21 year old bmw
Ahh
50/50 oil fuel mix
My car however does love to piss coolant every few thousand kms lol
go get it fixed?
sounds like older american cars
Hot pressurised coolant
80's sports car use to eat through oil like candy
because they drove with mixture, or because they sucked?
older carb and efi engines just always burned through oil
it was normal.. you would wonder if something was wrong if it didn't.. now that was just for like mustangs and camero's etc
the 4 bangers didn't do that
i would say all v8's but that isn't true.. the 305 and 350's in trucks etc didn't eat through oil
Newer cars now do it when their seals go
yea but that is usually a defect issue
Or age
Newer cars (aka made after the 80s) when they age have seals go
i have a v6 half size truck parked in my barn that hasn't been started in like 15 years and it dosen't leak lol
age leads to defects
Clearly the answer is maintain your car
I've never had an oil consumption issue, even with cars that have seen better years
v6 and v4 cars and I guess in eu there is even 3 and 2 piston cars? wouldn't really see an oil issue
4 cycl can definitely have oil leaks
yea but that isn't common. atleast not here
I've been behind enough with leaks here 😄
The smell and colour of burning oil is quite obvious
Here being American made or cars sold in America?
and that just isn't any oil.. it's whale oil
jup, burned oil is a very specific smell
you refering to my comment or tinkerers?
A guy here still drives a Trabant. Easy to smell when he just left^^
Yours
all, even the imports that had v8's ate oil but the v6's and v4's rarely leaked any for both domestic and import
infact there was a styretch there in the 80's and 90's where import cars were deemed better at most things (aside from speed)
but since amercian mau's have caught up
At least when bmw had the shitty engines mid-late 2000s there were plenty of oil leaks. Even the 4 and 6 cycl. Most people on the forums are American so taking it from there
with your limited max speed, max speed doesn't matter either way /shrug
All of VW 4cyl tfsi eat oil
BMW 4 cyl are just terrible between 90 and 2003
Audi V6 from 86-03 were horrible too for oil consumption
Hey the 1.9L one for the 318 is fine. Pretty strong and sturdy engine
Honestly I always thought foreign car manufactures cheaped out on quality when selling the specific american variant. that may be true, may be true in reverse too, dunno
It’s the later year ones that caused issues
(We have my 00 bmw and a 04 bmw, 04 has 3 leaks mine has 0)
The biggest issues with the EU vehicles in the US is that they are only sold with with V6 or v8 which introduces other premium options that make them less reliable
Which is why EU cars are reliable in EU, but unreliable in the US
I do know BMW is an asshole company.. always has been. plenty of youtube videos of american bmw mechanics talking about thier practices and proceedures etc
The biggest issues are parts are just expensive
then they go and put out that subscription shit
Otherwise no different than any other European car really
they all assholes? lol
Nah, I'd say BMW is a bit worse than most of VM conglomerate
I don’t mind subscriptions because when buying a used car I’ll be able to get the features I want (assuming they also come with a buy lifetime option - which bmw does now)
Or just wait a bit till they hack the software the dealer uses and then use that anyway
exactly what I am talking about and was talking about when it came to the tesla.. I think other countries fuck over other countries in those ways lol
how can you feel that way.. never feel good about paying monthy for something installed on a car just to access it lol
Notice how I said lifetime sub
Aka pay once and never again
i mean.. who does?
Every other country
People who don’t need to go fast and want to save on fuel
Or be more economical
so then when you sell it the next person get's fucked? lol
Why? If you buy once then it stays with the vin
This isn’t Tesla
oh? it carries over?
As far as I understand
Means the next owner can then buy heated seats if they want it and you didn’t too
Don’t have to replace the entire seat for it
I mean that is better.. stiull shit compared to buying a car and just getting what you paid for at the dealership rather then to pay extra on top of sticker price lol
I’m sure you would be able to bundle it in at the dealer. They love deals
And saying “oh we can add 3 years of xyz for free”
Or whatever
oh i am sure but it's still a stupid concept
I also wouldn’t ever buy a car brand new. So I look at it from a used concept
Where now you just buy the engine and colours
just sell cars with and without and only stick to the price. if someone wants it "added" they pay to have it added permantly.. not software unlock
Gotta love that 7 year warranty is the norm for cars now
the fact that it's already in the car makes the price auto go up even if you don't want to pay to unlock it
5 years was just too short
What if the base price stays the same and then they only charge the same to permanently add it
Apparently will save bmw money because they don’t need to retool
yea sounds convient but is it true?
Hell with my car the only difference for cars with or without on board computer is a single checkbox in their dealer tool and a different indicator stalk
They would charge $5k for a indicator stalk with a button
I’m sure they can keep the same price and make money off it
The kms is where it’ll get you anyway
For my daily driver, sure
I do 150k in 4 years
But for the family car, not so much
don't you have to pay for the warrenty?
I bought it with 50k and 4 years, so still 100k or 3 years left
It's included
Lots of Koreans do 8 years now
Think I've seen 9 too
VW defaults to 7 now too
you pretty much have to have a lemon to need any repairs in 5 years lol
Ehh not really. 5 years is when small stuff can start breaking
i guess if you are rough
Like modern cars that don't even have bulbs
the eletronic shit only lasts about 15 years before that crap starts taking a dumb
It’s peace of mind if shit does go wrong with your new car though. Especially when they can just tack it on for free
Usually easily repairable yourself though
my truck is fully loaded 2006 and I already have eletronic issues
Especially with a car that costs $150k
nah not when the buttons on the steering wheel start operating stuff they aren't suppose to etc lol
My 2000 bmw has 0 electrical issues. Sounds like dodgy connections or a broken board in the wheel
I did buy my truck used so there is that lol
(Or god forbid, American engineering)
humidity, can be lots of things
your au right? i mean do you even know what humidity is?
….
lol
just saying there is no telling what causes the issue.. just for some reasons the eletronics are around the first things to go
Your issue is probably replaceable though. I’m guessing it’ll be a dodgy connector, cable, or board that’s broken
like they say.. don't buy appliances with all the bells and whistles if you want to keep it for awhile lol
i am sure
but f that.. i just reach the less than 1 foot from the radio and use the knobs lol
If you have an aftermarket radio then it could even be that
nah it's stock
Average owners and electronics should never mix
Found out the previous owner of my car cut the antenna wire and just twisted it into the roof antenna. Instead of the actual radio signal amplifier
I need to get my energy dashboard set up in ha
Had to connect it back up using PAL tv connectors because it’s the one connector bmw doesn’t sell by itself
use one of those old meter image with the rotating disc as a card so you just watch it spin really fast
you have a tv in your bmw?
Radio = fm/am
oh
Yeah, I had a TV tuner in my A8 too
you see parents with tablets and dvd players etc in cars here but actual TV in the car is not really a thing, factory, aftermarket.. it just isn't a thing here
But Norway had already killed the TV by air distribution years ago
How do you get free to air tv then?
Cable for all?
Lots of free TV over IP here
but atsc 3.0 just came out.. your missing out!
Even you can watch Norwegian tv over ip
Eww atsc
its what we use lol
DVB like what most of the world uses
we do our own thang
Norway killed the TV distribution over air in 2007, just like they killed fm in 2018
And landlines are now fully dead
Yeah like instead of the open standard for digital radio you guys have to use a proprietary standard for that instead
Thank the us military
Sirius?
alot that has to do with control issues lol
we just don't trust you people
look at atx.. case dismissed
Yeah DVB-T2 has 4K
how long has that been out?
A few years
OTA here isn't really a priority to the masses I have to say
so advancments in it would be slow
Here it is. Most say fuck it to paying for the singular pay tv company
No surprise that australia was the number 1 country in the world for piracy
lol in au I would probably say f you to the cable providers as well considering everything you guys get is way over priced lol
we've had 4k on terrestial for 10 years or so now according to wiki
yea thats way over priced
it costs me less than that for tv and internet
We just do TV over IP for 15+ years, no limits
$100/ month for 100/20 here 🙃
nice.. I think atsc 3.0 came to light here about 3-4 years ago but only just started being put into devices within the last couple of years
$75 for 600/600 here
Lucky. But also australia has always been very expensive for internet
Cloud flare hates us lol
he pays 75 for internet but then has to shell out 150 for a burger
You can watch Norwegian tv for free if it makes you feel better @umbral cliff
Yeah we watch free to air crap for free too
Online or in person
lol
Got plex using free to air over IP using their streaming links someone compiled
vpn and internet.. you should have access to everything
wait you don't need vpn, only we do lol
Lol vpn
region lock is bs
It’s what I do love Netflix for. Their shit is region free released worldwide at the same time
Not drip fed over 10 years
that is not true lol
there is a diffrence between what you get on your netflix vs mine as well as released dates for content on it
I looked that shit up not too long ago
Yeah I’m talking Netflix produced shit
another thing that is bs
Since Netflix can’t control what xyz company want
infact half the movies that ever released are released in everywhere but the US like a week or so earlier then we get it
I’ll just download whatever I want at home 😛
can torrent shit before it's sold in stores lol
makes one wonder what is on atx's plex aside from 60 minutes
Other liberal nonsense you see
I bet 99% is in a language I cannot understand
british english.. just as bad

I've seen mr bean.. there is a reason he rarely talks lol

$160 for 1000/1000 here :/
definitely not region free - the US gets stuff we cant get. As for releasing all at once - yeah they do it, but not sure thats entirely a good thing or not. Cos once you binge watch it youi have to wait an entire year (or more) before the next season.
I’ve not seen a single Netflix made show that was us exclusive only
I am SMART! S-M-R-T!
@clear ferry is not as fit anymore, sadly. Too much "gjemmekontor"
my fans are controlled through lutron switch and what they call canopy the wires hooked to before running into the fan to control dimming functions and fan speeds by sending pulses over the live wire. surprised they haven't made a smart switch that controls a "smart rgb bulb" in the same way so only one of the devices needs to connect to a network.
Remember when headphones used to have wires, and the immense feeling of unreasonable rage whenever those got stuck on something?
I just had that happen with a head mounted display. Oh. My. God!
lol
Good news for you is that headphone wires are is the fashion trend again 😉
I actually haven't gained any weight on home office
I stay at the same weight for over four years now
lol thats cos you are only watching AU stuff. Its already been filtered out. If you manage to get a vpn to the US to work - try netflix thru that. But I hear that most of the streaming platforms are actively stopping incoming clients that originate from vpns.
I use a VPN, Netflix exclusive and own made I’ve not noticed any differences. Anything that is not Netflix made then sure there’s a difference
(And it’s gotten a lot better recently for what aus has)
well I should hope its getting better, cos what AU gets is pretty crappy and is so far behind the US releases when they do get it and there is no reason for it that I can see.
Yeah well you get to thank shitty media companies for that. Disney+ seems to be releasing Disney movies around the same time too. They can do their own stuff because they can, harder to get other companies to cooperate especially with older films
The weirdest thing happened last night; One outside camera has not been working for two months, and last night it just started working again, like normal. It didnt even pull POE when it was dead
Dell best
😂
🦝 A raccoon was spotted near my home. (within 1 kilometer)
Is Home Assistant luring them, Michelle?
I think that could be my camera issue! Michelle is pulling the cable!
Idrac9 is sexy
🤢
HP, sexy… 🤢
At least it's not Compaq...
Hey, Compaq did some good stuff
Proliant was one of them
The rest they got from DEC
Some of their kit may have been good, but a lot of it was utter shit
Including the ones with the "tamper" switch on the case, that failed all the time and cut the power to the motherboard
Their desktops were great if you were into self harm, i looked like a triple suicide attempt after replacing a dimm
lol
never heard of a tamper switch that cuts power to the machine
not for anything residential anyways
But you don't even know the difference between a UK and EU socket
Y'all can't be trusted
there was a diffrence? I thought they were all just pushing two bare wires into a hole
Yes! Post it to me!!
No. I Fixed it
Great. I will skip racoon roast this christmas
Thank you very much
that's not a normal thing?
are trash pandas not worldwide?
oh right, I forgot that mericans cut through asia on their maps
sometimes I wonder if you want to make your side of the puddle look stupid. 2 Writes 😂
Nothing beats the flimsy us two prong anyway
They are so bulky
that they are. Fun to step on
It's like plugging in a 63a plug
😄
I very rarely see that with a grounded plug, and only with older, worn out sockets used with 2-prong plugs
It’s more of a problem with big wall worts that want to pull themselves out
It’s not an epidemic
I’m glad that some folks are making money on a tiny piece of plastic, but I’ve had no need for it
More often, plugs require more force than I expect to remove
The EU plugs are so snug that you have to use two hands some times to remove them
Which is troublesome
you must have flimsy arms
it's not like you got to worry about pulling the socket out of the wall here either
now I'm confsued. Are there extension cords lose enough to just yank them one handed? o.0
It’s nice that they provide little bowls to pour water into

Are we still doing this?
Little jello molds
On more than one occasion I have used a hammer to plug in something because the safety feature with these refused to work
No no
You have to daisy chain these
Glad HP spent time innovating servers while the rest of the world was hell bent on making a 2 hand plug.
The child proofing is.... Eh on some
Socket safety features suck
Yeah... With a hammer you can just go through it
Just make sure to use a nice screwdriver to do it one by one while it's plugged in 😉
agreed
just used HA to determine Time of Death for my HVAC system
Google sends an email for this already for nest devices
the control board failed so the thermostat wasn't getting the right signals back to figure it out
Funny the email includes HVAC pros to fix issues as well. Pleasantly surprised.
but the blower motor fried out but the furnace was still on. So that safety check on the controller failed. Also it cut the common line for a bit. My ecobee powering off was my first tip off that something was wrong
oh yeah, super bad
I had to replace the blower as well. Medium speed was dead
Reminds me, I need to get in touch with my friend with the only HVAC system i know of in Norway
I was supposed to help him smartify it
we made a call at 1am, they promised a call back at 6a, called on time. Truck was at our door by 9
system is FUBAR though so we're getting the whole thing replaced
heat exchangers were cracked
Going for forced air or heat pump?
since the gas lines are already there we're going to continue with forced air
replacing the AC too
That sort of forced air?
Are you going to play the SEER game ? 🙂
lol
