ayy itanium is the future

#

since 2004 ?

clear ferry
subtle pasture
#

There was actually an interesting article where someone power-capped a 12700k at 25w

finite atlas
#

feel free to share it

dusky plank
#

the m1max draws 40w and destroys that i5 12

subtle pasture
#

25w, about the same Cinebench score as a R5 3600. lol

dusky plank
#

intel is practically dead

subtle pasture
#

Alder lake is actually very, very efficient. It just boosts stupid high by default 🤷‍♀️

#

I love that their load temperature was only 30c during that test. lol

finite atlas
#

the thing is, intel has to decide which road they want to go
efficient cpu's or fast cpu's, choose one

subtle pasture
#

They can do both, honestly...

dusky plank
#

intel: yes

subtle pasture
#

You're going to see power-capped 12th gen CPUs in laptops

dusky plank
#

just put more power into it

subtle pasture
#

And they're going to perform amazingly well for the amount of power they sip

finite atlas
subtle pasture
#

This i5 I'm sitting on has 6 big cores and 4 little cores.

dusky plank
#

psssshhh

#

my odroid has big little since 6 years

#

is it good because of that? no.

subtle pasture
#

It's power efficient because of that, more than anything

clear ferry
#

Big.big goaFeelsLoveMan

subtle pasture
#

In intel's case, it allows them to fit 4 little cores in the same amount of die space as one big core, which is how you get a 10-core i5 that only uses the equivalent die space of a 7-core all-big-core CPU.

finite atlas
#

they should have done that back with 6th gen cpu's

subtle pasture
#

For laptops, that means they can prioritize little cores while on battery and save power. For desktops, that means they have a bank of additional cores they can access for highly-threaded workloads. Kinda a win-win

finite atlas
#

yeah especially since most applications only have one or two main threads

subtle pasture
#

e'yup. You don't actually need that many big cores

#

In fact, Raptor lake (13th gen) is slated to have the same maximum of 8 big cores, but doubles the little core count from a maximum of 8 to a maximum of 16

finite atlas
#

for now tho, the cpu's i have are fine for my tasks

subtle pasture
#

So we'll have a 8+16, 24 core / 32 thread Core i9 hit the market some time late in 2022.

#

Hah, CPUz happens to have my old CPU in their list of reference processors. That's... one hell of an improvement...

#

What a difference 7 years makes >.>

clear ferry
#

That's also a lot of years

subtle pasture
#

My only real complaint is that I lost some memory bandwidth and PCIe lanes vs. the old platform

#

Going from 7 year old HEDT to current-gen non-HEDT still isn't an across-the-board upgrade, sadly

#

There's a reason HEDT systems are so expensive. They have features 7+ years in advance >_>

#

PCIe lanes went down from 40 to 20 (granted, they're now PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 rather than 3.0), and memory went down from 90 GB/s (quad channel DDR4) to 50 GB/s (dual channel DDR4).

#

I really wish Intel had brought quad-channel DDR4 down to mainstream desktops for 12th gen. It'd be kicking DDR5's ass right now...

finite atlas
#

in the end all that matters for me is, that the pc is affordable, donst consume tons of power and works well enough for my day to day tasks

#

why didnt you go for a ddr5 mainboard?

subtle pasture
#

Because you literally can't buy DDR5 right now...

finite atlas
#

oh right

#

its only available in 1-2 weeks

subtle pasture
#

Also, 1st gen DDR5 is actually kinda' crap. Good DDR4 can still match it on clockspeed, with better timings.

#

DDR5 will (eventually) scale well past 6 GHz, where it'll outperform DDR4 handily... but it's not there yet...

finite atlas
#

why did you bought it rn then and not waited for a month or two?

subtle pasture
#

DDR5 won't be available in a month or two. lol

#

Maybe some time near the end of 2022... maybe...

#

There are major supply chain issues surrounding the power regulators that go onto DDR5 memory sticks.

#

DDR4 has power regulation on the motherboard. You buy all the power regulation you'll ever need for your DDR4 RAM when you buy your motherboard.

#

DDR5 has power regulation on every individual stick, and the power regulators are about 10x more expensive. There's currently a 35 week lead-time on getting an order of said regulators.

finite atlas
#

ouch

subtle pasture
#

So yeah, if you place an order for the power regulators right now, you'll get them in about 9 months

finite atlas
#

luckily i'm not in that bubble anymore

subtle pasture
#

I already had 32GB of DDR4 from my previous system, so I just reused that and called it a day...

finite atlas
#

understandable

subtle pasture
#

12th, 13th, and 14th gen are all currently set to use the same socket, and all of them will have a dual memory controller supporting both DDR4 and DDR5

#

I imagine Intel is anticipating issues with DDR5 supply for some time to come...

strange crag
#

there are lead times on LOTS of hardware. Major supply lines are broken due to limited production facilities of certain items.

subtle pasture
#

I mean, yeah, though that doesn't seem to be impacting intel (or DDR4) all that much

#

Probably helps that intel makes a lot of their hardware in the US

glacial knot
#

also helps that intel got their own fabs

subtle pasture
#

Yup, 2 more are about to come online, and they just started construction on a 3rd. All of them in the US.

glacial knot
#

they did deprecate hardware ahead of time quite a bit on the lower end
Because they shifted capacity to their more up to date/higher value products

strange crag
#

Isee that apple and samsung are getting heavily into neural processors in all their latest phones. My question is this:- How come the likes of Intel and AMD are not doing the same for their cpu lines?

subtle pasture
#

Because you can just install a PCIe card with waaaaay more AI processing power than any ARM SoC

#

Nvidia GPUs, and Google Coral TPUs, for example

strange crag
#

but apparently even the likes of the humble r-pi is impacted by supply shortages.

#

but are those gpu's and tpu's programmed for ai like a phone is?

glacial knot
#

it's just matrix multiplication at the end /shrug

strange crag
#

the futureof computing is definitely AI

subtle pasture
#

One would hope they use the same high-level language, sure

glacial knot
#

r-pi is one of the first to be impacted. they have no stable supply chain

glacial knot
subtle pasture
strange crag
#

however the upshot of the supply chain problem is the rising prices of electronics.

subtle pasture
#

Modern real-time raytracing is actually fairly coarsely rendered. They use dedicated AI processing hardware on the GPU to fill in the gaps, rather than actually rendering at full resolution.

strange crag
#

@subtle pasture is that actual ai - or just huge paarallelism required for raytracing?

subtle pasture
#

They use both. They raytrace a course frame, and then use AI to upscale it and fill in all the gaps between the rays.

#

Because apparently it's faster to use AI to finish the frame than it is to actually raytrace at full resolution

glacial knot
#

judging from how long the cpu tracers in stuff like blenders take...

strange crag
#

@glacial knot Putting on my futurist hat you are correct it will be part of the future, because "computing" as we know it today will cease to exist. Replaced by ai that can run stuff all by itself. Whether that is for the benefit of mankind or not is to be determined lol. Any access we need to compute power can probably be dialed up (cloud wise) from right inside our skulls with implants at an early age!

subtle pasture
#

The left half is pre-AI denoising. The right half is after AI is done with it.

#

They aren't even casting 1 ray per-pixel

#

it'd be too slow

strange crag
#

thats hard to tell as the border of the two halves are at the shadow line - and pictures in the dark are notoriously lousy to start with

subtle pasture
#

It's dark because they filled the non-casted area with black rather than gray

#

It's pretty obvious that AI is doing a fuck-ton of heavy lifting there...

strange crag
#

yeah - but you are under the roofline of the building whereas the right half is out in sunlight

#

if the picture was all in sunlight or all in shade just saying it would be better for the example

subtle pasture
#

Better?

#

Same process on a close-up, with raytraced reflections no less

strange crag
#

much better !

subtle pasture
#

I still think the first example was obvious 🤷‍♀️

#

Their AI denoising algorithm is pretty impressive

strange crag
#

yes it is

brisk glen
#

lol irc.... if you hate discord move over to matrix

#

no good irc servers anymore

brisk glen
strange crag
#

what then is samsungs reason?

brisk glen
#

android is finally getting it because they now see the limitations of trying to do everything in google's cloud

subtle pasture
#

Phones mostly use AI for image processing, at this point. Makes things like facial recognition faster.

#

And I'm sure it's being used for image processing from the main camera, as well

#

Maybe also some background noise suppression for calls 🤷‍♀️

brisk glen
#

image/photo and doing the voice assistant on device

#

hah and that

#

my recipe app has a ML model now for when the metadata way of grabbing fails

subtle pasture
#

Ah yeah, voice recognition. Being able to do that on-device is so much better than having to upload all audio to the cloud for processing

brisk glen
#

so even websites trying to stop me from grabbing that cookie recipe get scraped now

subtle pasture
#

That's one of the reason 3rd gen Amazon Echo devices are so much faster than 1st and 2nd gen. They do way WAY more voice recognition on-device

#

I imagine part of the reason you aren't seeing AI acceleration built into x86 CPUs is because x86 CPUs are so much faster than ARM SoCs that they can just run this sort of thing in software...

brisk glen
#

video editing as well is speed up

#

@subtle pasture not even close

subtle pasture
#

Eh? An x86 CPU can do voice recognition no problem

brisk glen
#

my 2w google coral runs circles around an i9 Desktop with image processing

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, and for large bulk operations, you'd use a TPU or GPU

#

But you really don't need a dedicated TPU for the Alexa app to work on a PC...

brisk glen
#

ah yah, I have been with apple for soo long that I forgot that the GPU has the TPU

subtle pasture
#

Works just fine using CPU-based voice recognition

#

And Windows Hello also manages to do facial recognition without dedicated hardware

brisk glen
#

you can always do it without the dedicated hardware, its just not power efficent

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, but it doesn't necessarily need to be power efficient if it's not a long-running bulk operation

#

Logging into your PC with your face only happens rarely

brisk glen
#

true, but it is for me with my photos always being processed

#

on device face, etc

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, you're not an average user. lol

brisk glen
#

@subtle pasture every apple photos user does this 😛

#

even my mom without knowing she does

subtle pasture
#

I've processed photos for years without a TPU. What are you using it for?

brisk glen
#

its doing object recognization, people recognization, identifying text in a photo and OCRing it along with handwriting

subtle pasture
#

Ah, see, we're doing completely different kinds of image processing. lol

brisk glen
#

well when I get to image editing, its nice to be able to easly grab a person

subtle pasture
#

I'm sitting here with lightroom and photoshop not knowing wtf you'd need a TPU for

brisk glen
#

do dynamic lighting adjustments

#

ah

#

I think affinity photo got massive speed boosts

subtle pasture
#

Generally the bottleneck with OCR is the speed at which you can scan the pages, not the CPU...

#

An x86 CPU can OCR a page long before you can finish scanning the next one

umbral cliff
#

Hey you don’t know whether someone might have a stupid fast scanner 😛

#

(I imagine a photo based one might be rivalling)

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I've seen fast book scanners. They're not that fast

brisk glen
#

the handwriting identification is a ML model

subtle pasture
#

paper has physical limitations. lol

#

The Project Gutenberg book scanner is brilliant, though

brisk glen
#

my god, paper.... we have to scan a lot

#

because other regions cant get their shit together

strange crag
#

and even nicely printed on a paper page the ocr gets it wrong.

subtle pasture
#

heh, is handwriting recognition that slow? I've been using it since 2003 in applications like OneNote

#

And computers in 2003 were slow as balls compared to today >_>

brisk glen
#

usually inaccurate as hell

umbral cliff
#

The quality would be different though even if the speed is the same

#

Handwriting recognition is fast and accurate I’ve found recently

subtle pasture
#

it's pretty magical handwriting into OneNote and watching it convert into editable text in real time behind your stylus.

umbral cliff
#

But old style required more accurate handwriting

low harness
#

Handwriting recognition is very different from OCR because you have another dimension of data.

subtle pasture
# brisk glen usually inaccurate as hell

It was actually pretty accurate if you had a stylus and were writing real-time, because it had all the pen-stroke information, rather than just the pre-written handwriting.

strange crag
#

going back to the phones using the ai cores for photo processing. Phones now have 4+ cpu cores as good as desktop ones of a couple of years ago. Surely they dont need to use the ai when the standard cpu's are capable?

brisk glen
#

I could never get into oneNote, I hated the page freeness

umbral cliff
brisk glen
#

@subtle pasture oh thats a completely different story

umbral cliff
brisk glen
#

if you are writing into the app, thats easy to be accurate

umbral cliff
#

Was quite nice

brisk glen
#

sucks on a phone since it does not text reflow

#

now I do everything in markdown

#

but yah, processing handwriting as you draw is easy, from a scanned document is HARD

strange crag
#

joke - why do doctors dictate to medical transciption machines? Answer - cos even OCR cant read a doctors handwriting!

umbral cliff
subtle pasture
#

The real issue is overlapping characters or rows

#

You have to try and separate that out when you're dealing with a scanned page of handwriting

brisk glen
#

Im happy that my phone and laptop can do all of this virtually live without being a space heater

subtle pasture
#

Now I'm curious how much AI processing grunt intel's integrated GPUs have. Hmm...

low harness
subtle pasture
#

They slap one of those on every CPU, these days

strange crag
#

I must admint that I havent yet tried it with my desktop, but it should be capable

subtle pasture
#

Ah, yup, there it is. Intel GPUs have "dedicated Xe Matrix eXtensions (XMX) matrix engines, which offer hardware-accelerated AI processing."

#

So intel CPUs (the ones with integrated graphics) do have AI processing onboard 🤷‍♀️

brisk glen
#

all of them?

#

I bet a lot dont

subtle pasture
#

Any intel CPU with an "F" suffix lacks an iGPU, yeah

strange crag
#

not the half dead cpu's (celeron etc)

brisk glen
#

so that rules out a lot of laptops

subtle pasture
#

laptops are more likely to have integrated intel graphics than desktops, though?

strange crag
#

if you do a /cat/proc/cpuinfo - what do you need to grep to determine if it has it?

subtle pasture
#

It probably won't show up there because it's a GPU. lol

strange crag
#

well cpuinfo list a LOT of stuff including some extra instructions sets etc

dusky plank
#

intel gpus show up in /dev/dri

#

as does every gpu

subtle pasture
#

Also worth mentioning that the intel GPU tends to get disabled if you have a discreet card installed

dusky plank
#

that is bios dependent

subtle pasture
#

Though you can generally twiddle some options in your BIOS to get both at once

#

@dusky plank I'm well aware, but that's the behavior I've seen out of practically every computer I've ever touched

#

Install PCIe card? Intel GPU vanishes unless you specifically enable it.

dusky plank
#

I have one right in front of me, igpu disabled but still shows up and is ready

subtle pasture
#

Then you have a bug.

#

If it's set to disabled, and not disabled, that's a bug...

dusky plank
#

tell that to lenovo

#

took me a hell of time to discover this bug a.k.a feature

brisk glen
#

Man, their hardware used to be fantastic

dusky plank
#

it still is

#

that's just a stupid bios in this machine

#

setting igpu to disabled was the only way to have all gpus show up (igpu and 3 pci gpus)

Are there any linux wizards around that understand fuses and docker?
I built an image that holds blobfuse and want to bind a local volume to the container's data directory (/localdir:/data)
That does not fail, but files don't appear at the host. Where I log onto the container and navigate to the data folder, all files are retrieved from storage account, but only visible in the container itself.

I clearly don't understand how this works, maybe you can enlighten me a bit?

Hello Friends,

We are a group of researchers at Florida Institute of Technology in the US. We have developed an add on that focuses on protecting the privacy of users on their MQTT devices. We are looking for participants to partake in a study we designed to evaluate our add on. Essentially you will be installing the add on and complete a few tasks we asked you to do. Your participation can help us improve our add on and thus help others use an improved version of it.

The experiment should take around 30 minutes. Upon participating in our research, you will enter a draw for a chance to win one of four $75 Amazon Gift cards.

If you are interested, please fill out the following form: https://forms.gle/rfDC16uJ1JuTgLmA7

Thank you for your time and support.
Best,
The IoT research team at FIT.

Oh cool I had a display in my dash I didn't recognize @last cedar

#

Apparently if another Volvo has registered slippery road somewhere I'm driving, my Volvo will notify my that there are slippery road conditions

#

Also if another Volvo has their emergency blinkers on in the direction I'm driving I also get a warning

last cedar
#

I will go put mine on, see if it lets you know

# clear ferry Nope, just beware

well that's dumb. your better off doing what many cars here do, if the outside temp and humidity is within the range to create slippery conditions then it just auto shows the warning lol

clear ferry
#

It does that too

forest edge
#

so you get a warning on top of a warning that doesn't tell you where lol

#

surprise!

forest edge
#

car manufactures should just stop trying to create thier own ecosystem and instead just utilize something that's already wide spread like google maps

#

was watching a thing on the new ford f150 lightning coming out next year which is their first all electric truck and it uses something called ford pass which people have to pay monthly for and that is just infuriating

clear ferry
#

Lol

#

Like Audi etron

#

You have to pay monthly to have maps

#

And adaptive headlights

forest edge
#

this is just for thier own version of crap, like finding suitable chargers nearby etc

#

nothing keeps people from just using something like android auto etc

#

infact most do that instead of the monthly crap, it's just the fact that they do those that is stupid

#

I mean come on.. monthly to remote start your vehicle if you don't have the key fob? that is so dumb

#

Subaru is the same way. we just bought the remote start fob so we didn't have to pay monthly to remote start the forester but I think it's dumb they charge you like that for basic features used through a phone app

#

You pay like 1M sek for a car

#

Thrn pay to unlock features

#

Like no, f you. Don't think I will. Thanks

#

I understand that you pay extra to upgrade a base model (once)

#

But not reccuring. They are not providing a monthly service to you for adaptive headlights, or a bigger battery

#

Maps on the other hand I can understand paying monthly for, someone must do something to update them

forest edge
#

tesla has/had something like that. where you would pay a fee to unlock features for the car but if you ever sold it those features were turned back off.. shit is nuts

#

why the more tech gets poured into a vehicle the crappier it becomes

Ford connect sound like utter trash as well. Let's hope the market kills it (ditto Audi)

The bookable periods range from monthly and yearly runtimes, through to permanent use are possible (depending on market).

#

Rofl

forest edge

you have to pay to turn on and keep on features like drivers assist?

#

forest edge

leave it to Germany to build a car with features, charge consumers accordingly because the car has those features then expect them to pay a monthly fee just to activate those features you done paid for when buying the car lol

how are they commercial products?

#

you have vehicles that are for the public and then there are vehicles that are not for the public.. pretty clear seperation

glacial knot
#

what the hell is "for the public" supposed to be here? Like military vehicles/generally available?

forest edge
#

like semi trucks

#

the average person wouldn't buy nor really afford one.. they are mainly made for commercial use

glacial knot
#

yes. And other cars are used for commercial stuff as well. Outside maybe the "supercar" category. And probably even those

forest edge

used in that manor is not the same as actually being placed in that catagory
