stay focused my boys, it's all about that 13 year old network gear
You mean 17
Wow The HFC Nodes appear to have no battery backup, unlike FTTN. So when the power fails the entire area is out. We have seen issues caused by faulty electrics (e.g. an RCD failure) that have taken 24 hours to get an electrician out to fix.
I guess there's no point of a UPS really
where do you copy paste these weird sentences from?
This is from the article
Your neighbour can literally slow down your connection from having a faulty box
According to NBN only FTTP have power outage redundancy
Sounds like NBN is just poor generally
All the fttn nodes also have it
not according to NBN
Frome were
Their website
Where are you getting data from the NBN they don't really tell you much because there are wholesaler
I have between 3-4ms latency to the norwegian internet exchange, anything more would be an atrocity
@prime latch
and drops in the network, what on earth
Fttp is the only official option to have a battery backup at your modem
You know there's something called a UPS right
As it says “Restoring power with an alternative power option is not possible if FTTN is experiencing a power loss”
Aka UPS is not going to keep your service up if FTTN has an outage
The actual nodes have battery backup
Again, NBN don’t seem to think so
Look at a picture of a fttn node
They are saying your connection will drop out when the power drops out because your modem won't be powered
It doesn't say anything about the node
Then why does it say alternative power option is not possible if NBN FTTN is experiencing a loss
Surely it would say you can self power your network and stay online as long as your modem is powered
Not no access

This links from the page of how to plug in your modem
It wouldn’t say “You can’t power your network” whilst also having FTTN powered
Because that would be silly
This is the standard fibre-to-the-node node
A UPS isn’t exclusively for advanced tech people
So your average home user has a UPS stop the cap
Granny's got the power shield rt1000
Have you thought the batteries are not to power home networks though and for other reasons?
You guys have power outages ?
Storms or scheduled outage
No not really at all
Haven't had a power outage this year
Still spent $2500 on a UPS but
I haven’t had a power outage in the last 5 years or more
The last 14 years I've probably had 6h total outage, and 5 of those was one of the outages due to a snowstorm making trees fall on powerlines
Except self caused power outages for upgrading electrical work where they had to turn it off
(Like my side of the meter that is)
The only reason I got the powershield rt3000 was because it was on sale at the wholesaler
A bit overkill for my home network
Has to install a 15 amp plug and
2500 is more than I've paid for UPS' the last 20 years in total
And your 17 year old switch
Because the ups can do 3 kilowatts
The ups was only $2,100 but I had to add in rails and the ethernet card
That are quite expensive
Wanted my ups to email me
Yeah but not text message
sure you can
My ups requires the card it says it in the software
@prime latch https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2621096 also examined it, FTTN may have battery backup but NBN do not promise any time when the grid is down. Looks like between 4-10 hours depending on the node itself though
It's must just be a power shields thing
Any $100 UPS can send me a text message via USB
My one has all the stuff about adding a phone number I still haven't got around to do it
You gotta make sure your 17 year old switch stays up
You Would want the IP cameras to stay up when the power goes out
My ups last about 40 minutes what about you guys
I don't need it to last more than 20 seconds, so I couldn't care
Thinking of buying the extra battery that goes under it if I'm going to add another server
Don’t have anything mission critical and power outages are rare enough they’re not a focus of mine
Either power is gone for 10 seconds or it is gone for 5 hours
Or if you get unlucky a couple days
Hasn't happened to me since..... 1994 I think
(Happens in the mountains in Melbourne when storms come through, overhead powerlines there still)
I just had to get an online ups to stable out the power
What kind of ups do you guys have online line interactive or offline
This is the extra battery they sell
Are you sure you really need to have your networking up for half an hour though
No he doesn't
Like thats a lot of money to splash out on something that wouldn’t happen often
Basic cost/benefit analysis
Most just the blue iris server and the network switches
After 30 minutes that's the only thing that stays on
All the other outlets turn themselves off
Blue Iris 🤢
Compared to unify protect it's awesome
Compared to Unifi anything is awesome
Do you need your cameras on during power outages constantly though? Like if you don’t get any major outages yearly it probably isn’t worth it
What’s wrong with unifi?
Sadly my power boxes in a pretty open area so we could be easily turned off so they do need stay on
Looking into moving the power box
Or just get a lock on it?
Metre reader said hello
Pretty sure you can get locks that can be opened by you or your power company
Also smart meters said hi
Their massive coverups of major data breaches, their injection of advertising in the webui of paying users, their shitty bricking hardware policy if you try to upgrade "EOL" hardware and the userbase is 13year old shitkids mostly, what more do you need @umbral cliff ? 😄
If I was going to get a Smart metre I would just move it
You can also buy the keys online I have about 10 of them
If its free then would they move it for you?
Because when I try and service people's flower boxes they always lose them
And the chance of someone actually having the key and breaking in to yours drops dramatically then
Upgrading to a Smart metre is not free mate
You know I'm an electrician right this is literally my trade I've been working in for more then 20 years
Power company in vic did it for me for free
They moved everyone to smart meters 10 years ago
That's nice it's normally a massive cost
At least in.qld it's a massive cost
We did country wide smart meters in 2018 @umbral cliff was nice
Have done it for a couple of customers before I moved into the its
Ah didn’t realise any of that. I was looking at possibly doing unifi networking at home because its recommended (and they have the small wall mounted wifi router which is nicer looking)
These days I mostly focus on the government's dark fibre network and remote traffic light controllers management and its Road management cameras
Don't do unifi
The only good ubiquiti product in my opinion is there access point
They're firewalls are missing too many advanced features unify protect is an overpriced joke
Yeah here we have to deal with each state being split into smaller companies that then manage the grid
lol little-texas
Unify protect literally sells 4 megapixel cameras for $350
My meter even has zigbee compatibility (but unfortunately the energy specific one which is hard to actually find something for HA with that)
I like my edgerouter x and two unifi APs, but once those APs die I'm not buying any more unifi kit
In fact I bought a tplink eap225 as a third access point
Why are you running multiple types of access points
Nah we’re connected to all of the east coast itself, just individual parts are maintained by separate companies
Do you literally have two different Wi-Fi networks is it a glorified WiFi extender
Via two different models so you could just use two of the same so it's only one
And what access points are they even
No one else makes the tiny routers which would be a good fit for our home. Anything else is roof mounted and reasonably ugly
Pssh, there are a lot of nice mesh points these days
Pfsense router says hello
that can be easily hidden in a bookshelf
AP AC lite, AP AC LR, tplink eap225
Lol not even an AC Pro
I do not want to deal with mesh routers anymore. After dealing with linksys velop I want to tear my hair out. Works fine when it manages DHCP, but as soon as it goes into bridge mode it breaks hard
I personally Run 5 ubiquiti AC pro at my house

Only real good outside mountable good looking access point
How dare I mix manufacturers of networking equipment
Have one on the outside front and the outside back of my house
More just seems like a bunch of random Access points chuck together
And?
Mine have been running in bridge mode for 2 years, serving 250m2 fine with three, one wired
Without really seeing the floor plan this could be incorrect but wouldn't it just be better to get one really high-end access point in a good central location
Is it an interesting floor plan
I have no web access to the linksys routers since going to bridge mode. I have no clue what broke it but its just not responding. Works fine I just am not a fan of them for that
Is it a really long one story house
This is the specific one that looks good. Since its sleek and is totally integrated
Mine are three VLP01
1200-ish sq ft single story with a full basement
Also linksys’ wall plug is huge, takes up 1.5 spots so not great
Lol they're stupid for Australia
Because you have to make brand new holes because the orientated the wrong way
To a standard ethernet ports in Australia
Not if I want good 5GHz coverage...
Well given we don’t have any ethernet in the walls it would be fine
So you're going to your holes put in the wrong way so you can never go back to a normal ethernet port really
What do you mean by ‘the wrong way’
This Is the standard Australia
Compare that to the US
Don't think they are standard size so you can't go back
Used completely different screw holes so you would have to do some patching if they even were compatible
Oh I know what you mean now. Yeah look if we need to we will fill and cut new holes
Because plaster jobs aren’t exactly pricy
That's the thing about a water ubiquiti products you can see they're made for the US market
Actually see that with a lot of stuff like that
But they wouldn't work anywhere that's not the same so it's a lot of countries
Honestly plaster jobs aren’t really a huge concern
I'm pretty sure the UK uses the same design as Australia
Ubiquiti products are really just the best don't really like they're in a wall ap tried them out in my office don't really like them
Also @prime latch looks like clipsal make vertical ones anyway https://www.clipsal.com/products/detail?CatNo=2032VRJA5&itemno=2032VRJA5-WE&tab-document-1=0
So maybe harder to find but not exactly the end of the world
Yeah I seen them before at the electrical wholesaler but I think they use different sizes
And wow they are old they only do CAT 5
Not even cat5e
But why would you need to be faster then fast ethernet to be true
Isnt the standard based on the cable itself not the plug type
Sounds like a true Cisco2004 statement
Since if the plug is wired properly then its up to the cable?
Oh shit
Fast ethernet is 100-10
And it is getting gigabit when I get the media converter in
So it will technically be a gigabit switch
That switch can do 1000/1000
What cable do you need for 2.5gig? Is it just cat 6? Or can 5e do it
It has two sfp gigabit ports
Sure, those are uplinks
So gigabit in gigabit out so it's a switch
No both of them and not uplinx only one

It's just not uplink
That is their original intention
Yeah but it doesn't mean they just have to be up link
I can plug in a gigabit device into the gigabit Sfp port and get gigabit
So it is a gigabit switch
No it isn't
It can do gigabit to a client
That's what you have to be to be a gigabit switch
Hey didn't you say you're from Victoria don't you have daylight savings
Noone who ever worked in networking will agree with that statement
Oh crap I work in networking
Correct. I also just finished uni for good so have nothing to do until my grad job starts in Jan
Staying up late isn’t a huge deal
Only reason I am up is because the boys have been having issues on site and I can't sleep because I'm probably going to get a phone call in 5 minutes after I go to sleep
👌
The fun of being the its project manager last night we only lost $10,000 on tc surprised it wasn't going to be more
Poor project
We're actually doing really well right now with a lot of new projects
Being a project manager since 2013 now so have a lot of contacts in Brisbane City Council and template and document I've made up so I don't have to worry about that stuff
sounds like you did a poor job of cleaning the pads\ solder at a too low temperature
Use stronger glue
CLEANING? whats that
There we go
i decided to say fuck it, and use some pogo pins and 3d print a jig
i mean, why do you think i decided to scratch build a pogo jig? lol
IF MY MAIL WOULD COME FASTER
i wouldnt have to resort to glue
anyone have a recommendation on solder, im not well versed
for electronics
something that sticks to shit well
Good stuff!
Yes
what
what
@tidal bronze looks like smash and grab is California's new Thanksgiving tradition lol
It’s bizarre. The videos look like a horde of ninjas descending on a store
Well, destroyed my old Nest with my drill....(any time I try anything remotely DIY something goes terribly wrong) Any recommendations for locally controlled thermostats? 😅
do you need hardware for that?
Thermostats, such 80s wow
then let them put it in your arm instead of requesting the ball sack injection ya goof
sn60pb40
I got 1kg of Fluitin sn60pb40 for 50€. Was a pretty solid buy
Not if you heat it up
It will become liquid
good pun
Life goals tbh
ikr
you get a headscratch aswell atxbyea :p

he's got fleas
More like worms from all the raw meat
@umbral cliff that picture of linksys router on the wall next to the power points. They look like British power points. Not Australian!
Does that mean you are only pretending to be Australian? Lol
Was an image from google of the unify stuff
I do not own anything yet :lul:
Ahh ok thought I might have caught you out lol
A Brit wouldn’t have plates like this either 😂
Lol
look at this professional setup right here
perfection
ignore the nodemcu and rc522
i made a jig that works for the magic home led strips
that looks multiple times more professional than most of my DIY stuff
i just wish i knew exactly how many amps each section of LED took
so i could know exactly how much i could run off this PSU
You could measure it or just do what I do and just hope for no magic smoke
lol
the boiler at one of the buildings let out some magic smoke yesterday
of all days
lol
the 24v transformer blew
and i think it took out the control board
lol
not my issue im not the hvac guy
i need a long piece of allum to use as a bar/heatsink to mount like 4 or 5 3ft sections so i can make my own shop light
with rgbw
You can for most strips
its pretty back of the napkin but works.
looks like a paver stone with a light in the middle
might look nice as wall tiling
But is it smart 😂
No, which is a good thing
Smart switches are trash here
Separate the switch from the smarts and use a Shelly with cheaper yet way higher quality generic switches
I live in the US, but agreed
Most smart switches are kinda trash from what I can tell.
I like that they’re sleeker looking then the Clipsal variety. Which all seem to be white plastic and ugh.
Wish glass style switches would exist (even touch button ones)
(Also not a fan of putting things in the wall)
They're the best looking thing clipsal has made for sure
Why don't you like things in the wall
Still not as nice as some switches I’ve seen overseas. But the smart switches I’ve seen manage to look nicer still
Risk of fire/ if something goes wrong it’s sitting in the wall and not as nice. Especially if the smart switches still operate fine offline but unsure how the Shelly’s would go
and snakes in the wall too! The deadly variety of course!
Calmelb. I have seen the glass looking powerpoints. They look kewl!
Its snowing ❄️☃️
Very off topic but this is the place
What do you all think about credit cards
Given:
You always pay the full balance when due
As opposed to debit cards etc, where you use your own money
I don't use mine since my bank issues debit cards
Like, I know in theory it should be the same
But I feel like there's a strong psychological element
When the withdrawal from your account is deferred
It's nice to have when travelling
And the banks know it
also insurance etc...
Yeah we get pretty good travel insurance on our card
But we haven't travelled since 2018 :)
sounds reasonable, you have the craziest measures there down under I hear
Measures?
covid restrictions
then our media tells LIES again
Australia is a big place ;)
I think we've had 3 community transmissions this year
All due to hotel quarantine failings, since it's a shitty system we shouldn't have to do anyways
We used to have the craziest restrictions here in Melbourne. But those are a thing of the past
Only masks and QR code check ins
Melbourne also had the worst community transmission spread and still does, 1000 cases a day
I guess the proof is in the pudding
We lock down hard and fast the second there's a single community case
Yeah Melbourne just got caught out with lockdown fatigue
And we've enjoyed relatively an almost covid free time
Don’t forget we’ve also got some of the highest levels of vaccination in the world too
Also my opinion, if you don’t use it to spend beyond your means and you actually get benefits from them, then they can be a smart investment
Otherwise at least in australia having a credit card doesn’t provide benefit for credit score as much as the USA
That was so bad. Even Vic in a worse situation at that point than nsw was having less per capita. So bad
I am not great with magic banking stuff, but if that’s providing a benefit then it’s good to use
I plan to get a qantas points card once I start having a proper income
That whole having to take debt to get a credit rating thing is so cooked
Although I think the rating agencies here are trying to move in that direction
It works for them. Means more money to give out money
Since in aus it’s like 20% of the cc holders who provide most of the income with late penalties
I think the real money earner is the merchant fees
1-2% of all card revenue
That's a lot of money
See those go to visa/ MC. Whilst late fees go straight to the banks
Also funny, Amazon is having a real spat with visa 😂
The bank gets their cut don't worry about that
if you treat a credit card as a debit card its fine
if it has cashback its even better
I think the studies people spend more
I prefer points, pays for flights which is useful
basically the same thing
if you're doing revolving credit on your card then stop it
I plan to have a credit card that can be shared with my partner next year. Means we can share groceries but legally have separate incomes and accounts
(Because I’m working full time next year, they’re still at uni and getting government student allowance. Second they share an actual account with me they no longer qualify as my income would be too high)
Simple way to be legally separate
yep
except if you are living with them then its classed as defacto and your stuffed again. But yes, keep accounts and incomes separate, and when the time comes open a joint account and have a designated amount going to the joint as a separate transfer from each personal account. Do not pool incomes - that way leads to grief! Speaking from experience!
See if you have no legal or social media links between the two then there’s no way for anyone to find out if it’s defacto. Which is the logic we take
Slightly dodgy? Sure. But relationship is too early days (1 year of dating) to call it defacto in our opinion
unlesss you are living together, apparently you need to declare that when officialdom steps in - or they can investigate you. Welcome to the police state made even more so with the advent of covid and lockdowns etc lol
defacto is 3 months I believe
Yeah for this it’s just housemates. Since it’s just me, them, and a third housemate. So easy to cover off for now
fair enuff - good call!
I use my credit card only when traveling abroad and when booking tickets / airfare due to better insurance
@clever mortar I feel sorry that most of your mod duties are redirecting people 😂
I can feel the frustration
I'd say if only people would read, but the number of people that post error messages that tell them what to do and ask what do I do is enough to make me despair about humanity
people, read? That's like expecting us to think
The amount of r/talesfromtechsupport I’ve read tells me no one reads. Like the fact that people see “click here to continue” and then they just freeze
My parents are guilty of this 😂
Type 'YES, I know what I'm doing` to continue
Surprised pikatchu.png when this breaks things
cough Linus and installing steam in popOS cough
I think all of us have
And at least personally I’ve been guilty of it at least once
(Including me accidentally typing yes to Ubuntu apt-get to remove the kernel 😂)
that's easy to fix with a live boot though
I may have been working remote through ssh, with the server located in London (at my parents place there). Was… not fun
A colleague of mine was tech support for a bunch of "monkeys" that made helped create the national phone books. The all had operation instructions and most of them wrote login details on post it notes on their desk. They refer to them DAILY! So my colleague decided to change one of the hand written passwords - just crossed it out and wrote in his own handwriting a new one. Guess what!? Got a call cos they couldnt log in! This is when we coined the acronym, "DAD's team". Stands for Dumb As Dogshit. lol
@umbral cliff this describes mod duties well
https://open.spotify.com/track/0Y2i84QWPFiFHQfEQDgHya?si=HYpKFjcVRuW8dcx99CSkgA&utm_source=copy-link
local places only accept pelts and furs huh?
@tidal bronze better sell your bitcoin, it's flat lining lol
Yep as an admin for my uni server, can definitely agree
We have a counting bot, doing very well (up to top 70 servers that the bot runs on) and people join just to ruin it now
Is it now 😁
Wowza
come on 😦
uh
Was that a ban 😂
bye bye
Banned
Deserved
that was intense!
Anyone got to see what that was all about?
Yes
Asked to be part of something
that was weird spam, not even a link
There was some message too, right?
But I don't want to repeat it @low harness 😄
Then decided to use a lot of mod spam 😂😂
even spammers ain't what they used to be
A spammer calling for a Mod, that is a first time 😄
looked away for a min and miss everything lol
One spammer tried to spam the only moderator online in the server i admin. Was a quick and impressive ban
i long for the malicious link days
that's the best way to get banned quickly
Hey call it a good stress test for your mod team 😂
paid spammer by baloob. testing the employees
Well a response time of <20 seconds is decent. I call it a win
That's a thing right ?
what "thing" would that be? bad luck? lol
No such thing as luck 😆
well then I won't wish you "luck" with your bitcoin lmao
Lol no luck needed there at all.
there is no luck involved with bitcoin
just hodl
i just bought some more with the black friday discounts
well you lose money on bad investments regardless of the field
its kind of common knowledge
Very true
here trying to punch quad in the gut and blak all ruining it...
Yesterday I gave all my thanks to BTC.
oh? cash out?
Well converted few to acres last peak.
acres.. what you buy now another rental?
Yep
if you take profits regularly it's all good...
i've actually closed my standard bank savings yesterday and the universe provided this nice dip to buy in
Nice.
it's good to know HA has it's own airbnb entrepreneur
0.05% APY in the face of 4% inflation rates doesn't suit me
Airbnb is old now it's swimply 🤣
bit seasonal tho
Not in LA.
What is these pings
Spammer
21 of them
Not got him
swimply probably not expanding to canada soon
Bot*
Ok banned?
Damn
i thought i was late to the party.. vas all showing up hours later..
Lol no wifi at the tractor
@forest edge working on home
repairing or expanding?
@tidal bronze yep been on it since 4 am
Me too converting e 131 to ddp this season
@forest edge both
it never ends lol
Fixing garden. Clearing land. New roof floors etc etc
That's a lot
My garden is prolly gonna be bigger thanks most people’s lot size
atx just had to add his cotton candy lights
A breadboard 🤔
Not looking at that
that dosen't look up to code lol
#permanentinstallation
Australians hate this one trick
@dull chasmwhats the temps down there? it was 25F not more than 30 mins ago.. what kind of garden work could you be doing? lol
Gardners hate mega trees 😕
wtf is a mega tree
I can't help you there.
typical response. think your police say the same thing to the store owners during all these smash and grabs lol
79F today, wanna come down ?
To be fair, it was a test install last year that I didn't bother disassemble so it's been there since last year, that is kinda permanent
it's already 80f at 7am on the west coast a few days before December?
Always sunny .....
apparently
-6 degrees celsius = 21.2 degrees fahrenheit!
was colder than that when i got up atx
I thought you lived somewhere cold.. global warming seems to be kicking your ass lol
@forest edge December you said ? 😆
one day those numbers will be an additional 100f and then lets see if your all gloaty about it lol
I want that weather, i wana ride my bike
Hunter breeze would be the answer
Agree
@tidal bronze https://youtu.be/h_BKSfnN6Ts?t=179
Lewis Black is great cause he shoots from the hip.
@forest edge I am just prepping it 🙏
It’s prolly close to a acre in size
Gotta have a @tidal bronze approved area
way too few core and ram comparisons today, cisco was not even mentioned once
I'm disappointed

Does anyone know of a product that will take the wires from a HVAC system and make them wireless? I have an ecobee, but, I need to change its location. I would prefer not to have to run new wires so I was looking to add a small box to make the HVAC wires wireless to an Ecobee or some other controller.
As an alternative, leave the ecobee where it is and put up some other form of interface where you want to adjust the temperature from.
Then connect them through the smart technology aggregation system of your choice.
I need to move the ecobee ... to make room for decorations 🙂
but, thinking about this more, I could cut the wire for the HVAC and install the Ecobee in the basement, even close to the HVAC unit and just use remote sensors disabling the onboard sensor.
Or, am I crazy?
Doesn't the ecobee regulate the temperature based on the temperature sensor in the unit itself?
You may want it in the same room as the outlet.
It can use the onboard sensor and/ or remote sensors.
Oh. Then yes, that would probably work. Source: Never had a house with a central heating system.
Hi all, I have a LSC Christmas light (warm white), it's a Tuya device. It's been dropping wi-fi connection after a few hours. Today I replaced the powerplug (where the wi-fi chip is in), but this hasn't fixed the issue
wi-fi coverage is fine, firmware is the most recent version, so I'm out of options.
this is the device: https://www.action.com/nl-nl/p/dummy-3006847/
@waxen lodge you could try seeing if someone in #general-archived has any suggestions.
Was there not an ESPhome channel?
ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32, with a native integration for Home Assistant.
You can find their documentation here, and get help with ESPHome itself here in the #diy-archived channel (#integrations-archived for the Home Assistant side integration with it). They also have their own Discord server too.
Yes, but no, but yes, but no
Thanks 😛
I hear those pair great with short ribs
Connected a trio of google wifis with ethernet
Went from 40mbps to modem speed on speed test
Meshes definitely suck
that sounds like user error
well are these google meshes wireless n or g? lol
then yea user error
Why?
54kbps due to mesh networking? I don't believe that to be hardware
The modem is 100mbps
you said ac
Yes that's the wifi protocol.
ac does it's mesh in 5ghz and it's still gigabit internal
regardless if your modem is 100mps your internal network is much faster
not sure what the cut rate is on 5ghz but it is not 1/2 like 2.4ghz
but even if it was, the math does not support you having a max throughput of 54kbps
unless you had a crap load of hops maybe
but usually mesh networks are 3 to 6
devices
with 1-3 hops
actually Tediore would be the one to ask for pointers on the google mesh system. he had it at one point. I do vaguly remember him saying google did something diffrent with how they handle networking or something
When I had that I never had a full mesh; I just had the single puck
oh I thought you had the whole shebang
Dropping by half if there’s significant distance isn’t unexpected. Especially if I’m a suburban environment where there’s congestion
Maybe a little lower than I would’ve expected (~60-70) but not hugely out depending on range
I am kind of confused about esphome vs tasmota. I have ab unch of wall switches I setup with tasmota (because t here were configuration howtos for them in their wiki). Should I have gone esphome?
it's preference really
both can do pretty much the same thing but they are completely different in how you set them up
Yeah, why would you think you should have gone ESPHome?
wtf!! lol
@clear ferry translated that from norwat
my stupid internet is still out from 1pm friday
getting really annoying
called and said my phone is out, which should have a SLA with the state where they have to fix it within 24 hrs, but my guess is they dont wana pay a tech to get called out now because overtime
shitty fucking company and it has urk'd me to a point of irrational anger
im using my phone through vpn, so it doesnt give me the "you have no hotspot plan" on my pc
What company?
TDS
Pretty sure that is danish 🤣
No one has ever said 54kbps except you?
What does your girlfriend think about home automation generally?
shes a fan of it fortunately
That’s lucky
rule of thumb: make it seamless and not annoying… she especially likes to shout „good night!“ at the homepod which just turns everything off
Now that’s a good idea 😂
You should see my wife asking me to create her isolated vlans and private ssids
Does your wife work in IT too?
Just a weird kink
Don't kink the cables!
Definitely can’t be a cat-o-9 tails, I count more than 9 😂
cat9
She holds a master in cybersecurity and malware analysis
What has she concluded about you then?
That explains a lot then
My partner gets confused when trying to navigate windows or their android phone. Smart stuff is…. Fun 😂
She reminds me every day I'm a fucking worm infecting the house
This is excellent. @clear ferry hasn't realised yet, she is running a long term analysis

wash your mouth, mister!
we are in lockdown… and still we get omikron faster than fiber can deliver, our people are amazing
Guessing for a lockdown soon, but I don't mind, I'm going on vacation in three days
i'm at home all the time, so i dont care about it aswell
@clear ferry these lights. I beg of you put me out of my misery and tell me the brand/name.
Been searching for too long. Its the stupidest thing.
i love this
Hopefully you will find work!
i can find some, but i happy having an excuse for not working ;D

I bought them for half of that two years ago
I have about 800
is this because alli is becoming mainstream or because of shortage? i didn't think they were any in led.
Probably a mix
The same
that poor unicorn
No way..
must have been really bad for it to be that sick
i want one of those huge inflatable xmas deco, but i am always afraid of the wind flying it away
Yes way
You mean cum that hard
That is why you tie it down
one led per like 10 cm how tf does it look like a 144 led/m strip...
I mean ik distance does it but the effect is striking
And really bright
Atxs house is 20000 square feet
gimme in none freedom units
15364 McDonald's menus
so the scale for led to meters is off
as seen from space
oh, 20000 square feet is about a lot of m2
Roughly 55 racoons
just divide it by 0.45865465468745468754576876847168465746815468748678165143516
simple maths
How bright are those leds normally? Cant imagine much from one?
it doesn't look that big, quite cosy :)
They are very bright at 100%
bigger than mine, but still nowhere near "i am lost in my own house"
Three floors
too few decimals. Gotta be int128
Sadly
sorry
The actual amount of land taken up though?
We have 80m2 on "top floor" and 78m2 in cellar, but it only takes up 80m2
if that makes sense
252/3 roughly?
Yes
Maybe there's been a missunderstanding. I was under the impression you were using the lights in the ali listing. Or was that last video unrelated?
i'am sorry she had to comfort you
Ah
As the ws2811 I use on my house that is also. 5v
This is the same string at 50% brightness in daylight

ye but one has a considerably higher led density
But ye il go with those

I really really really need to start planing that trip to make sure i want to move there
this place is amazin
naa,~~ don't care about that~~ (a tad to strong) it's nice but not what i look the most for
i want to see the snow, and the tree ... and people not looking like they want to murder you all the time ...
what is that?
The Norwegian prime minister, health minister and CDC equivalent at the first COVID live communication broadcast
look like Norwegian natural social skill isn't a myth XD
Reminds me of Prince Charles, always wanting to shake peoples hands
This is what i fear the most, with people there being in very small social circle (usually school one) and me not being good a socializing ... i might end up grumpy and alone in my wood cabin.
isn't that a uk thing ?
good to know ! not that i know why it's good to know ... maybe some trivia for some rainy day
is solar a thing there ?
I always wanted to setup some solar, but with the very short day ....
Yes
You get about 1 watt per day
But they don't need much electric, and no fuel
you can ride moose instead of using cars
but i like my little blue car :(
Moose are hairy !
You can get a small moose and paint it blue
They are all legs
like
yea, but it's a shy sun, no go for power steeling !
damn, i didn't disable the notif again ... sorry
I don't mind
anyhow ... github is back and i have a thingy to finish before bed ...
I'll try to plan a trip to norway around febuary, that way i'm sure they will be another lockdown around that time :D
Coke aint supposed to look grey chief
anyone seen any good deals on android tablets?
Well, it is safe to say that my experience with HAOS is similar to my first install of pretty much any OS I have used in the past... The first time is rocky, ending up with the system being an absolute mess of files and mangled configuration files that work, but are likely to break if you look at them wrong... Best way I have found is to document it, then do a fresh install and go from there...
Last night, I actually redid the entire network, getting MAC addresses for every device, giving descriptive hostnames and IPs, and doing a whitelist scheme...
Missing sunlight is probably why you lot are grumpy! 😉
i can confirm this. People are emotionally cold over here. A lot of ppl also take vitamin D daily.
are those like ipads but worse and made by an ad company?
yes to all except not worse for home automation kiosk use 😛
i thought fire tablets were all on sale
ya not worth trying to jailbreak an ipad these days
hass ios app just runs so smooth
i was lucky though and managed to get the rootable fire tabs, but they're still on android 5 and have just about reached the end of their usefulness
i believe it
i keep holding out for the perfect tablet but i've been looking into DIYing my own wall mount with an old laptop screen
ideally i'd want 15inch or bigger but $$ per wall/room
i might go for a 15" on the main kiosk in our living room, but i'm a pretty big fan of the 8" form factor otherwise
my lovelace dashboards are all a work in progress but i think they'll be much more useful on bigger sizes
i have an original ipad pro 12.9 and my dashboards are pretty damn nice at that size
what is a fake ipad pro 12.9 ?
I think in this case he means its an early version
can someone direct me to a HA widget?
like i wana be able to just open system tray and turn on desklight
or something quick like that
thx bud
gotta see if i can make it fade up my desk light when my desktop gets turned on
ugh, theres no preset fade up.
heres another stupid question, is there a way to get a rgb entitie in HA to be seen by my pc so i can make my whole room freak out rgb when a game decides it wants to take over pc rgb?
when was the last time you touched grass @jade tartan ?
got this earlier
ignore the prepackage, it's not that, it's lemonmosa in the bag
and a moon rock
and some rosin
unless your asking when the last time i went outside was, and that would be wed, when i was at work
yeah, wed
too long ago
i bought the only grass i need for the next several months
lol
well
i mean that as it's winter, and no grass till spring
but that will last till monday maybe
i prefer hydro culture gorilla glue #4
LIKE I SAID
its all native american grown
so they just did the basic cheap thing and bought the packages from cali
one thing ive been hating is the quality of the power signal coming to the house
led strips been flickering occasionally
thats just the ghost in the machine!
so i got aura sync to see a tas led strip with the "hue bridge emulation" checkbox
but it doesnt change it's color
Huh... Seems that my server has temperature sensors on the Wi-Fi card and CPU socket, but not on the actual CPU itself...
sucks
Did set those sensors to alert me if it ever surpasses 70⁰C though...
Sounds like the temperature in my roof
I do need to put a sensor up there
Although I would prefer something hardwired
Since a) temps would shorten battery life, and b) I don't want to get up there to change them
Any thoughts where I could go to ask a question about airflow for a PC (Gaming PC that is overheating)?
consider water cooling? @neon ether
Also have you mounted the cooler right, using a decent air cooler, and have applied thermal paste?
And does your case have fans and airflow in it
Yeah the issue is - radiator + fans (blowing in) at the front, 1 exhaust fan at the back. GPU is getting really warm (85c+) and I think the case is too small or not enough cool air for it. At the top of the case it's vented and I can put 2x 140mm fan, but not enough room for the radiator to go there as exhaust (as I have on my own PC). So wondering, is it best to try fans that blow in cooler air from the top to try and lower the overall temperature, or use them as exhaust, but then where will GPU get fresh air from 🤔
any filters need cleaning?
I also found out, there are two types of fan these days as well (static pressure and something else) so not really sure what I need
Nah, it's brand new
https://i.imgur.com/Q0t0KjY.png
Green: Fans
Blue: Room for fans
Orange: Radiator (CPU)
I am wondering if this is solvable or it may need a new case with better airflow options?
GPU is 3070 for idea of heat if that helps
your gpu is putting out nearly next to no air to the back
if you want more airflow, put 2 more fans in the top that pull the air out, put that wont really help much
I think perhaps, it will be cheaper/easier to buy a new case rather than play around with fans and such
Well, the default fans with a case are not always great either
also have yoiu cleaned the fluff out of the fans on the GPU (and the rest too)?
What case you currently have?
It's only 1 week old, so no fluff
thats your problem - MICROATX
:/
get a gaming size box
What size?
most gaming rigs are mid sized to large - all for airflow and extra goodies lol
also fairly weighty to lift!
OK, I think my own is one size bigger and I have radiator at the top
Remember hot air rises too
No point pulling cold air in at the top when hot air is already rising
I usually do hot air out at top and back. Cold in front/ bottom
Yeah I think a bigger case similar to mine with air in front, air out top through radiator, might be the easiest option
thanks
hi guys - is this the right place to ask about webhooks / service calls - i know I can do this and am close but need help ! - don't wanna ask in the wrong channel...
you want #automations-archived
@dusky plank thanks - will do....
Would it be possible to power a 60 w led strip with a 60w fast charger?
Or should I just get a real powersupply
I would thenk that a led strip requires more than 5v and usually a fast charger is going to be in the order of about 15-20W isnt it?
Sounds like a bad idea
Oof, price tomorrow for power is peaking at 524øre per kWh
Compared to 3øre per kWh last year
That's a nice increase
What's that in a currency not used by mooses
*laughs in fixed rate
noh they are making up for it lol
A few more
What is the record highest load average you have had on a pie?
I had 64k on a server a few months ago
pi or x86?
Well I have never seen it past 5 or 6, but then I got this.
and I thought WOW thats high!
However a few months later I got this
and taht was on a pi3b
and it was only running at 46 degrees C.
psssh i got it up to 800
pictures or it never happened! 😉
With proper storage I guess you could lineup the IO more efficiently
Compared to an SD card 🤢
ddint find yours, but did find someone else who had it over 100. Hmm gonna have to try harder lol
maybe on a as400 - they're designed to run their CPU's flat out
Usb c fast charge can be 12v up to 90w afaik
Unsure if that’s what they meant though
yeah - I know - but it was one fact that intrigued me at the time
I know I’ve got a soldering iron that runs on usb c 🤣
thank god I didt have to work on them
Works really well
Itanium or gtfo
BCM2836 or gtfo
hehehe It was my intro to datacentre where I was to look after winblows machines
if thats the case then he may be able to run it, but I wouldnt trust it. How do you know what voltage you get out of it?
Depends on the receiver chip. Since usb c negotiates a standard
Im guessing thinking about it that it’s basic 5v usb a
Since it’s dumb essentially
yes, but I bet his led strip isnt going to negotiate
Think usb c defaults to 5v too
it only gives a different voltage upon request
more voltage pls
Please notice me voltage senpai
bzzt bzzt 🌩️
I think it limits current without negotiating as well
Question for sysadmins (or anyone who knows). If a script shouldn't contain a hardcoded user and password, but instead authenticate against a "secret store" server to retrieve a token or similar to later retrieve password when it's needed, how does it authenticate in the first place? I mean, it needs to log in to the vault to retrieve a password. How are these issues solved?
Well.... Where is the script running?
It could be part of a task scheduler, or an environment variable
but yes, you need to anchor your trust somehow. Depending on your setup and executors you may have different possibilities to do so
That's interesting, thanks. I'm guessing that if an intruder can explore your scheduler settings or your env variables, you've lost anyway.
It's just at home now running python scripts against apis, but it triggered a genuine curiosity as I imagined locking a key in a box and keeping the second key on your person.
if you store anything on the device, an attacker that can read all device state bones you, yes
Physical access is full access anyway, if they can access the user running whatever it is also full access
I like API-keys or similar when available.
wonders if there's a password manager with api-key kinda structure that allows this kinda thing
But if it's unique to you, would you then hardcore it?
Hardcode, damnit
keypair is nice. But API-key can have the advantage of further restricted permissions
least privilege, easiest to change. And then hardcode for the most part
Zero trust is a wet dream
I just recently showed my boss a small script. And mid talking realized it has my local domain password hardcoded because I'm lazy
Each session gets initiated with new credentials that each session requests
I should really generate another API-key from the local jira for that script. But doing that also kinda sucks

at least bitbucket allows to get a temporary token for http-auth via ssh
Say I want to retrieve a user / pass to update a database. I can log in with my user and retrieve a token, which I then can use to retrieve the user/pass. I either have to hardcode the token (or leave it somewhere in the system), or do the same thing with my user/pass
(Is api-key == token?)
Schrodingers authentication
Better than Schroedinger's backup
it's either reocverable or not, until tested
So like 99% of all backups then
Does Linux systems have environmental variables similar to windows?
If I'd want to store it there?
Cheers, I've just never had to use it yet.
So.. Schrodingers variables.
What if said scripts are running in docker containers? Can they access env variables on the host system?
pretty sure docker has some way to inject env variables as means to provide secrets into a templated container
otherwise they should be very embarrassed
(HA is my only experience with docker, but I'd like to learn)
Yeah looks like you can inject them at build.
Yes i do that with multiple
So this: - VALIDATION=${MADARAVALIDATION}
Looks in the computers env variables?
