I haven’t seen those unless its caused by myself

clear ferry
dusky plank
#

stay focused my boys, it's all about that 13 year old network gear

clear ferry
#

You mean 17

prime latch
#

Wow The HFC Nodes appear to have no battery backup, unlike FTTN. So when the power fails the entire area is out. We have seen issues caused by faulty electrics (e.g. an RCD failure) that have taken 24 hours to get an electrician out to fix.

#

I guess there's no point of a UPS really

dusky plank
#

where do you copy paste these weird sentences from?

prime latch
#

This is from the article

#

Your neighbour can literally slow down your connection from having a faulty box

umbral cliff
#

Sounds like NBN is just poor generally

prime latch
umbral cliff
prime latch
#

Frome were

umbral cliff
#

Their website

prime latch
#

Where are you getting data from the NBN they don't really tell you much because there are wholesaler

clear ferry
#

I have between 3-4ms latency to the norwegian internet exchange, anything more would be an atrocity

umbral cliff
#

@prime latch

clear ferry
#

and drops in the network, what on earth

prime latch
#

O think there more talking about this thing

umbral cliff
#

Only

prime latch
#

Fttp is the only official option to have a battery backup at your modem

prime latch
umbral cliff
#

As it says “Restoring power with an alternative power option is not possible if FTTN is experiencing a power loss”

#

Aka UPS is not going to keep your service up if FTTN has an outage

prime latch
#

The actual nodes have battery backup

umbral cliff
#

Again, NBN don’t seem to think so

prime latch
#

Look at a picture of a fttn node

prime latch
#

It doesn't say anything about the node

umbral cliff
#

Surely it would say you can self power your network and stay online as long as your modem is powered

#

Not no access

prime latch
#

You were talking about the NBN

#

This is a dummies guide

clear ferry
prime latch
#

This links from the page of how to plug in your modem

umbral cliff
#

It wouldn’t say “You can’t power your network” whilst also having FTTN powered

#

Because that would be silly

prime latch
#

This is the standard fibre-to-the-node node

umbral cliff
#

A UPS isn’t exclusively for advanced tech people

prime latch
#

So your average home user has a UPS stop the cap

#

Granny's got the power shield rt1000

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

You guys have power outages ?

umbral cliff
prime latch
#

Haven't had a power outage this year

#

Still spent $2500 on a UPS but

umbral cliff
#

I haven’t had a power outage in the last 5 years or more

clear ferry
#

The last 14 years I've probably had 6h total outage, and 5 of those was one of the outages due to a snowstorm making trees fall on powerlines

umbral cliff
#

Except self caused power outages for upgrading electrical work where they had to turn it off

#

(Like my side of the meter that is)

prime latch
#

The only reason I got the powershield rt3000 was because it was on sale at the wholesaler

#

A bit overkill for my home network

#

Has to install a 15 amp plug and

clear ferry
#

2500 is more than I've paid for UPS' the last 20 years in total

umbral cliff
#

And your 17 year old switch

prime latch
#

Because the ups can do 3 kilowatts

#

The ups was only $2,100 but I had to add in rails and the ethernet card

#

That are quite expensive

#

Wanted my ups to email me

clear ferry
#

that you can do via USB

#

so it isn't really fancy

#

NUT

prime latch
#

Yeah but not text message

clear ferry
#

sure you can

prime latch
#

My ups requires the card it says it in the software

umbral cliff
prime latch
#

It's must just be a power shields thing

clear ferry
#

Any $100 UPS can send me a text message via USB

prime latch
#

My one has all the stuff about adding a phone number I still haven't got around to do it

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Actually, that is mostly what my UPS' do

#

because they have 5+ minute boot-time

prime latch
#

You Would want the IP cameras to stay up when the power goes out

#

My ups last about 40 minutes what about you guys

clear ferry
#

I don't need it to last more than 20 seconds, so I couldn't care

prime latch
#

Thinking of buying the extra battery that goes under it if I'm going to add another server

umbral cliff
#

Don’t have anything mission critical and power outages are rare enough they’re not a focus of mine

clear ferry
#

Either power is gone for 10 seconds or it is gone for 5 hours

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Hasn't happened to me since..... 1994 I think

umbral cliff
#

(Happens in the mountains in Melbourne when storms come through, overhead powerlines there still)

prime latch
#

I just had to get an online ups to stable out the power

#

What kind of ups do you guys have online line interactive or offline

#

This is the extra battery they sell

umbral cliff
#

Are you sure you really need to have your networking up for half an hour though

clear ferry
#

No he doesn't

umbral cliff
#

Like thats a lot of money to splash out on something that wouldn’t happen often

#

Basic cost/benefit analysis

prime latch
#

After 30 minutes that's the only thing that stays on

#

All the other outlets turn themselves off

clear ferry
#

Blue Iris 🤢

prime latch
#

Compared to unify protect it's awesome

clear ferry
#

Compared to Unifi anything is awesome

umbral cliff
#

Do you need your cameras on during power outages constantly though? Like if you don’t get any major outages yearly it probably isn’t worth it

umbral cliff
prime latch
#

Looking into moving the power box

umbral cliff
prime latch
#

Metre reader said hello

umbral cliff
#

Pretty sure you can get locks that can be opened by you or your power company

#

Also smart meters said hi

clear ferry
#

Their massive coverups of major data breaches, their injection of advertising in the webui of paying users, their shitty bricking hardware policy if you try to upgrade "EOL" hardware and the userbase is 13year old shitkids mostly, what more do you need @umbral cliff ? 😄

prime latch
#

If I was going to get a Smart metre I would just move it

prime latch
umbral cliff
prime latch
#

Because when I try and service people's flower boxes they always lose them

umbral cliff
prime latch
#

You know I'm an electrician right this is literally my trade I've been working in for more then 20 years

clear ferry
umbral cliff
#

They moved everyone to smart meters 10 years ago

prime latch
#

At least in.qld it's a massive cost

clear ferry
#

We did country wide smart meters in 2018 @umbral cliff was nice

prime latch
#

Have done it for a couple of customers before I moved into the its

umbral cliff
prime latch
#

These days I mostly focus on the government's dark fibre network and remote traffic light controllers management and its Road management cameras

clear ferry
#

Don't do unifi

prime latch
#

The only good ubiquiti product in my opinion is there access point

#

They're firewalls are missing too many advanced features unify protect is an overpriced joke

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

lol little-texas

prime latch
#

Unify protect literally sells 4 megapixel cameras for $350

umbral cliff
#

My meter even has zigbee compatibility (but unfortunately the energy specific one which is hard to actually find something for HA with that)

scenic radish
#

I like my edgerouter x and two unifi APs, but once those APs die I'm not buying any more unifi kit

#

In fact I bought a tplink eap225 as a third access point

prime latch
#

Why are you running multiple types of access points

umbral cliff
prime latch
#

Do you literally have two different Wi-Fi networks is it a glorified WiFi extender

scenic radish
#

It runs the same SSIDs as the others...

#

I'm not gonna replace two working APs

prime latch
#

Via two different models so you could just use two of the same so it's only one

#

And what access points are they even

umbral cliff
# clear ferry Don't do unifi

No one else makes the tiny routers which would be a good fit for our home. Anything else is roof mounted and reasonably ugly

clear ferry
#

Pssh, there are a lot of nice mesh points these days

prime latch
#

Pfsense router says hello

clear ferry
#

that can be easily hidden in a bookshelf

scenic radish
#

AP AC lite, AP AC LR, tplink eap225

prime latch
#

Lol not even an AC Pro

umbral cliff
prime latch
#

I personally Run 5 ubiquiti AC pro at my house

scenic radish
clear ferry
#

Look out @scenic radish this is spicy spectrum here, if you thought I was bad

#

😄

prime latch
#

Only real good outside mountable good looking access point

scenic radish
#

How dare I mix manufacturers of networking equipment

prime latch
#

Have one on the outside front and the outside back of my house

prime latch
scenic radish
#

And?

clear ferry
prime latch
# scenic radish And?

Without really seeing the floor plan this could be incorrect but wouldn't it just be better to get one really high-end access point in a good central location

#

Is it an interesting floor plan

umbral cliff
prime latch
#

Is it a really long one story house

umbral cliff
#

This is the specific one that looks good. Since its sleek and is totally integrated

scenic radish
#

1200-ish sq ft single story with a full basement

umbral cliff
#

Also linksys’ wall plug is huge, takes up 1.5 spots so not great

prime latch
#

Because you have to make brand new holes because the orientated the wrong way

#

To a standard ethernet ports in Australia

scenic radish
umbral cliff
prime latch
#

So you're going to your holes put in the wrong way so you can never go back to a normal ethernet port really

umbral cliff
#

What do you mean by ‘the wrong way’

prime latch
#

This Is the standard Australia

umbral cliff
#

I do not like that way tbh

#

So flipped works anyway

prime latch
#

Compare that to the US

prime latch
clear ferry
prime latch
#

Used completely different screw holes so you would have to do some patching if they even were compatible

umbral cliff
#

Because plaster jobs aren’t exactly pricy

prime latch
#

That's the thing about a water ubiquiti products you can see they're made for the US market

#

Actually see that with a lot of stuff like that

umbral cliff
#

Yes because australia is a tiny market

#

I’m not surprised

prime latch
#

But they wouldn't work anywhere that's not the same so it's a lot of countries

umbral cliff
#

Honestly plaster jobs aren’t really a huge concern

prime latch
#

I'm pretty sure the UK uses the same design as Australia

#

Ubiquiti products are really just the best don't really like they're in a wall ap tried them out in my office don't really like them

umbral cliff
#

So maybe harder to find but not exactly the end of the world

prime latch
#

And wow they are old they only do CAT 5

#

Not even cat5e

#

But why would you need to be faster then fast ethernet to be true

umbral cliff
#

Isnt the standard based on the cable itself not the plug type

clear ferry
#

Sounds like a true Cisco2004 statement

umbral cliff
#

Since if the plug is wired properly then its up to the cable?

prime latch
#

Not 100/10

clear ferry
#

Oh shit

prime latch
#

Fast ethernet is 100-10

#

And it is getting gigabit when I get the media converter in

#

So it will technically be a gigabit switch

clear ferry
#

Fast Ethernet is 100Mbit tbh

#

And no, a 100Mbit switch won't become a gigabit switch

prime latch
#

That switch can do 1000/1000

umbral cliff
#

What cable do you need for 2.5gig? Is it just cat 6? Or can 5e do it

prime latch
clear ferry
#

Sure, those are uplinks

prime latch
#

So gigabit in gigabit out so it's a switch

prime latch
clear ferry
prime latch
#

It's just not uplink

clear ferry
#

That is their original intention

prime latch
#

Yeah but it doesn't mean they just have to be up link

#

I can plug in a gigabit device into the gigabit Sfp port and get gigabit

clear ferry
#

Sure

#

You do you

prime latch
#

So it is a gigabit switch

clear ferry
#

No it isn't

prime latch
#

It can do gigabit to a client

prime latch
#

That's what you have to be to be a gigabit switch

prime latch
clear ferry
#

Noone who ever worked in networking will agree with that statement

prime latch
#

Oh crap I work in networking

umbral cliff
#

Staying up late isn’t a huge deal

prime latch
#

Only reason I am up is because the boys have been having issues on site and I can't sleep because I'm probably going to get a phone call in 5 minutes after I go to sleep

umbral cliff

Very off topic but this is the place

#

What do you all think about credit cards

#

Given:
You always pay the full balance when due

#

As opposed to debit cards etc, where you use your own money

dusky plank
#

I don't use mine since my bank issues debit cards

hushed basalt
#

Like, I know in theory it should be the same

#

But I feel like there's a strong psychological element

#

When the withdrawal from your account is deferred

dusky plank
#

It's nice to have when travelling

hushed basalt
#

And the banks know it

dusky plank
#

also insurance etc...

hushed basalt
#

Yeah we get pretty good travel insurance on our card

#

But we haven't travelled since 2018 :)

dusky plank
#

sounds reasonable, you have the craziest measures there down under I hear

hushed basalt
#

Measures?

dusky plank
#

covid restrictions

hushed basalt
#

I dunno not here

#

We've been pretty much covid free the whole time

dusky plank
#

then our media tells LIES again

hushed basalt
#

Australia is a big place ;)

#

I think we've had 3 community transmissions this year

#

All due to hotel quarantine failings, since it's a shitty system we shouldn't have to do anyways

umbral cliff
#

We used to have the craziest restrictions here in Melbourne. But those are a thing of the past

#

Only masks and QR code check ins

#

Melbourne also had the worst community transmission spread and still does, 1000 cases a day

hushed basalt
#

I guess the proof is in the pudding

#

We lock down hard and fast the second there's a single community case

umbral cliff
#

Yeah Melbourne just got caught out with lockdown fatigue

hushed basalt
#

And we've enjoyed relatively an almost covid free time

umbral cliff
hushed basalt
#

WA lagged behind for a long time

#

Mostly due to NSW literally stealing it

umbral cliff
#

Otherwise at least in australia having a credit card doesn’t provide benefit for credit score as much as the USA

hushed basalt
#

We don't get any points

#

But it does leave money if our offset longer

umbral cliff
umbral cliff
#

I plan to get a qantas points card once I start having a proper income

hushed basalt
#

That whole having to take debt to get a credit rating thing is so cooked

#

Although I think the rating agencies here are trying to move in that direction

umbral cliff
#

It works for them. Means more money to give out money

#

Since in aus it’s like 20% of the cc holders who provide most of the income with late penalties

hushed basalt
#

I think the real money earner is the merchant fees

#

1-2% of all card revenue

#

That's a lot of money

umbral cliff
#

Also funny, Amazon is having a real spat with visa 😂

hushed basalt
#

proven spruce
#

basically the same thing

#

if you're doing revolving credit on your card then stop it

umbral cliff
#

I plan to have a credit card that can be shared with my partner next year. Means we can share groceries but legally have separate incomes and accounts

#

(Because I’m working full time next year, they’re still at uni and getting government student allowance. Second they share an actual account with me they no longer qualify as my income would be too high)

#

Simple way to be legally separate

proven spruce
#

yep

strange crag
#

except if you are living with them then its classed as defacto and your stuffed again. But yes, keep accounts and incomes separate, and when the time comes open a joint account and have a designated amount going to the joint as a separate transfer from each personal account. Do not pool incomes - that way leads to grief! Speaking from experience!

umbral cliff
#

Slightly dodgy? Sure. But relationship is too early days (1 year of dating) to call it defacto in our opinion

strange crag
#

unlesss you are living together, apparently you need to declare that when officialdom steps in - or they can investigate you. Welcome to the police state made even more so with the advent of covid and lockdowns etc lol

Does anyone know of a product that will take the wires from a HVAC system and make them wireless? I have an ecobee, but, I need to change its location. I would prefer not to have to run new wires so I was looking to add a small box to make the HVAC wires wireless to an Ecobee or some other controller.

clear ferry
#

Yes

#

A esp board with some code can do that for most older hvac

low harness
#

As an alternative, leave the ecobee where it is and put up some other form of interface where you want to adjust the temperature from.

#

Then connect them through the smart technology aggregation system of your choice.

versed ore
#

I need to move the ecobee ... to make room for decorations 🙂

#

but, thinking about this more, I could cut the wire for the HVAC and install the Ecobee in the basement, even close to the HVAC unit and just use remote sensors disabling the onboard sensor.

#

Or, am I crazy?

low harness
#

Doesn't the ecobee regulate the temperature based on the temperature sensor in the unit itself?

#

You may want it in the same room as the outlet.

It can use the onboard sensor and/ or remote sensors.

how many hops do you have?

hushed basalt

The modem is 100mbps

forest edge

you said ac

hushed basalt
#

Yes that's the wifi protocol.

forest edge
#

ac does it's mesh in 5ghz and it's still gigabit internal

#

regardless if your modem is 100mps your internal network is much faster

#

not sure what the cut rate is on 5ghz but it is not 1/2 like 2.4ghz

#

but even if it was, the math does not support you having a max throughput of 54kbps

unless you had a crap load of hops maybe

but usually mesh networks are 3 to 6

neon ether
#

Any thoughts where I could go to ask a question about airflow for a PC (Gaming PC that is overheating)?

strange crag
#

consider water cooling? @neon ether

umbral cliff
#

Also have you mounted the cooler right, using a decent air cooler, and have applied thermal paste?

#

And does your case have fans and airflow in it

neon ether
#

Yeah the issue is - radiator + fans (blowing in) at the front, 1 exhaust fan at the back. GPU is getting really warm (85c+) and I think the case is too small or not enough cool air for it. At the top of the case it's vented and I can put 2x 140mm fan, but not enough room for the radiator to go there as exhaust (as I have on my own PC). So wondering, is it best to try fans that blow in cooler air from the top to try and lower the overall temperature, or use them as exhaust, but then where will GPU get fresh air from 🤔

strange crag
#

any filters need cleaning?

neon ether
#

I also found out, there are two types of fan these days as well (static pressure and something else) so not really sure what I need

#

Nah, it's brand new

#

I am wondering if this is solvable or it may need a new case with better airflow options?

#

GPU is 3070 for idea of heat if that helps

finite atlas
#

your gpu is putting out nearly next to no air to the back
if you want more airflow, put 2 more fans in the top that pull the air out, put that wont really help much

neon ether
#

I think perhaps, it will be cheaper/easier to buy a new case rather than play around with fans and such

waxen lodge
#

Well, the default fans with a case are not always great either

umbral cliff

No point pulling cold air in at the top when hot air is already rising

Question for sysadmins (or anyone who knows). If a script shouldn't contain a hardcoded user and password, but instead authenticate against a "secret store" server to retrieve a token or similar to later retrieve password when it's needed, how does it authenticate in the first place? I mean, it needs to log in to the vault to retrieve a password. How are these issues solved?

clear ferry
#

Well.... Where is the script running?

It could be part of a task scheduler, or an environment variable
