It's cool if they want to use it as a test... but they're charging full price for a test.
Yeah, because it's a full game made from scratch... they didn't just dump their old assets from 1993 into Unreal Engine and call it a day.
I didn't hear anyone begging for free copies of "Wolfenstien: The Old Blood" because they had purchased "Return to Castle Wolfenstien" back in 2001
The former also being a remake of the latter
Skyrim is probably the game that actually deserves some vitriol over its re-releases, as very little has changed between the original release and the latest re-release. It's still on the same version of the Gamebryo engine, with all the same assets, though at least they were nice enough to re-compile the engine binary in 64bit
Eh. If people are dumb enough to spend money multiple times on the same game with a few more pixels, that's their choice. I'm not in that camp.
apparently remaking all assets from scratch is just "a few more pixels". Aight...
In the case of Myst, I'd say the jump from the 1993 version of the game, which was a slideshow of 256-color, 640x480, pre-rendered, still images, to the 2021 version of the game, which is a full real-time 3D game, is probably worth the re-purchase
and before same assets stretched over 3d objects
@deft pewter I guess u was right about the kite I can’t get to my home I fear it doesn’t exist anymore
Our home right now
Ah, the most important family member is safe then
Wow that sucks. Take care!
be safe!
Today, i got kicked out of my local Mc Donalds for trying to redeem a Mc Flurry monopoly card while under 16
Is it a rule and did you have proof you're 16?
It's in the small print of the promotions, yes.
And they don't just kick people out for trying. They only kick people out for being total dicks when they're asked to go away.
sounds like someone has some experience with this 🙂
I was behind the counter 😉
Used to work there, unfortunately. I know exactly what kind of idiot gets kicked out...
That moment you realize there's already another release party coming.. Time goes by fast.
What are we triggered about
Did someone ask how to install docker on a lightbulb
I just refuse to do tech support 😮
not because I mind giving support once
But because I've made the experience that I'm on the hook forever, when I do :/
My favorite is when you help someone, fix their problem, and give their machine back and a week later they say you broke it because something totally unrelated is now not working for them.
I know you replaced my hard drive, thanks for that, but you broke my mouse…….it moves so much slower now.
exactly
"Sorry, I work with room-sized mainframes. I know shit about home computers 🤷 "
I actually got caught by that the other day... mom had some computer problems, something about file permissions.
She's using a mac - basically BSD - so I thought it was an actual problem.
Then after she brought the computer all the way over here I realized the problem was only in Microsoft word... so of course a reboot fixed it...
Felt doubly foolish when that made me remember a reboot was the fix the last time she had the same problem too 🤦♂️
you felt foolish because your mom couldn't reboot her computer?!
basically i've stopped helping my parents with their computers unless they bother me multiple times about it
at which point i don't even bother trying to "fix" it
i just backup and restore
i tell them, "i'm really not that good with computers... i'm just better at google than you are"
so previous owners left a 2gb cruizer usb stick
sitting on one of the counters before they left
i wanna know what's on it
fire up a live boot of linux, plug in the usb drive
yeah downloading debian live atm, i'm unpacking still and i gotta find a usb drive though
gotta find a usb drive
Ironic...
it's like needing a usb drive when you have a usb drive. alanis
to find out she was god tho.
Like when you buy scissors in a blister pack, so you need scissors to open them.
i imagine lots of people probably slice themselves pretty bad with a kitchen knife trying to open stuff like that
amazing it's not illegal
shrug
That's what your SAK/Leatherman is for, no?
Gerber, please
Ok, Daryl
I say that only because my second hand set are still going strong "some" years on
My fanciest multitool is a SAK I was gifted. Haven't found a reason to get anything more serious yet.
I quite like some of the fancy knives you see on /r/edc but I have no need for them.
Also, butter knife laws 😢
Oh no... that'd be premeditation 😂
I'd be far more worried about the tyre iron or fire extinguisher personally 😄
Those have legit uses in/around a car though. Police are mongs when it comes to multitools or folding knives.
I get why... but they take it too far.
Eh, I think it's a lot of situational - I've never had a problem, but then I've never had a problem with the police. Any interactions have always been polite and calm
I'm not going to get pulled over for doing 50 in a 20 and then go off on the police...
Worst encounter I've had was getting a ticket for being parked in a no parking zone, 1 minute after the restrictions started. I was annoyed, but it was pretty clear I was annoyed at myself for not noticing
I've never had trouble either but the consequences are ridiculous. Isn't it something like 5 years of jail time just for possession of an illegal knife in public? And that's when it's not even clear when it's acceptable.
Going camping... carry a knife. Going into town for drinks... don't carry a knife. What about the range of activities in the middle?
So, carry one with a folding blade under 3 inches and you'll be fine 😛
That sounds like an insane amount of time for just carrying a knife, considering that you sometimes need to buy knifes and get them home
That's fine
If they were still in their packaging and you were travelling home from the shops, I think they'd let you off.
But wandering around with the knife 3 days later, not so fine
It's when you have a 6 inch kitchen knife down the back of your trousers that they'll be suspicious.
And some inner city areas in the UK have awful problems with knife crime, so it's understandable that they're strict about it.
I guess a lot of it is up to the common sense of the police too
True, true
I suppose I'm also a bit eh about it since I spent years doing archery, and carrying around a bow and arrows in public
Frankly those are way more dangerous than some piddly little knife
Way less concealable too though.
Somewhat, true
Knives are nasty. You'd never know someone's carrying until it's too late.
I used to have a friend in York that found an old law, that you could kill a Scot if he was openly carrying a bow in York, or something like that
Glasgow... two razor blades are all you need, no knife required
Yeah, one of those old laws that'd never stand in court 😉
Oh absolutely not, but it's funny they still exist
Hell, I made a mess of my own face the other day with a straight razor and I was trying not to draw blood... 🤣
full tang bowie hanging off my hip l ike jax teller
I finally bought a leathernan after years of wanting one. Was afraid I’d feel like ”that guy” when carrying it. But I use it. Every. Single. Day.
Yeah, multitools are amazingly useful.
The wave+ is such a well balanced combination of everyday tools too.
I use mine a little less now that I have a little multitool key - that's my go-to for stuff like opening boxes and prying/unscrewing easier stuff.
i want the locking pliers leatherman
This goes with me everywhere: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00N24X5MQ
my klein backpack is always in my truck
multimeter, 11 in 1, 14 in 1, wire cutters, lots of bits and bobs for joining wires
A great thing I found for the not-every-day bag is the xiaomi/wiha bit screwdriver.
@low harness idk what you mean by that. they need a special bit?
No. Just a good high quality kit
ah, right arm.
lock box for the alarm needed a special key
i just shoved a flat blade in it and spun till the whole lock twisted
?
all my screw drivers are klein
Yes
that is a pretty nice little set i'll tell you what
18v battery operated hand tools. blue red or yellow?
I got some store brand, but also some blue
oh nice. everything i rock is bosch.
@deft pewter not quite a kite but not good
worst part about bosch is they have no wirsbo expander
dewalt also makes this threaded rod cutter that looks awesome if you do lots of hangers
i just about broke down and got a bosch multitool the other night trying to put the R/O in the island
How bad is it?
Ouch. Did the tree hit anything important?
@dull chasm is that a natural flood area? how frequently does this flood like this?
It's Louisiana, and they just had a hurricane...
No it’s not a natural food area
Yes about 10 k in shed plus leaning against house so I don’t know
My signal is bad so I might lose connection again for hours
you over cellular?
that tree looks long ded
i just want the smart supply/return grills
how often do you think when a new home is handed over to a customer it's been balanced... the branches for the ducting to promote appropriate ACPH
you don't see ducts sealed very often around these parts.
dude is selling envisalink 4 on marketplace for less than half the retail price. just the board. he claims it works. do you buy things off marketplace like this?
I don't know who you're talking to...
that's okay
You also already know about #hardware-archived.
not really a hardware question though imo. it's more-so about the likelihood i might get a defective or broken product from a seller that will likely not do a return
rolls the dice
Probably the channel most likely to have any experience with that will be... #hardware-archived
@midnight adder no tree was not almost dead a cat 4 hurricane did that damn
Yeah, it looks light inside. No rot 🤷♂️
what kind of tree is it?
A dead one.
bald cypress?
super obvious in pic
To anyone that knows the difference between a long-dead tree and a recently-dead tree anyway
or someone who knows the difference between a short dead tree vs a long one
don't see trees much with that kind of size where i'm from
I guess there aren't many in the city.
where i'm from it's pretty much all commercialized farming
it's flat and prairies as far as the eye can see
the running joke is, "you can watch your dog run away for days"
Ah, so you're Dutch?
russian, french, meti, scandinavian
gmt -6 is my timezone
another hint would be... it can go from -40 celcius in the winter to +40 celcius in the summer
Could be Canada 😛
But all Canadians are lumberjacks, and that would surely mean they've seen big trees before.

Ok will do that sorry.
Internet went down this morning... Am I glad everything in the house works local 😅
Only thing I hate is that I can't login to my system. Maybe I will look for an option with a sim card so I can always reach home assistant when I'm away
Just an unrelated internet down, or are you also in hurricane territory? I hope everyone is safe
No just a casual down. I live in the Netherlands. I can't imagine what people are going through every year with these hurricanes. It's terrible
Losing everything in a storm...
just got an unpesant reminder
Shut up! I won't even get the boat out of the water for weeks!
I want to ask how to prevent it
So ask in #diy-archived

Who were you, DenverCoder9? WHAT DID YOU SEE???
Here's the answer on this geocities page
I am in the middle of moving container
So been moving all my trash and doormats
VERY sorry
haha
How do I change current working directory in dockerfile
with..."cd". that's a weird question
No, not inside the container. In the Dockerfile that defines the image.
right, "RUN cd xxx"
But it still took Darren longer to type his question here than it did for me to Google for him.
alright, I'll back out
This only apply to this run command only
Docs are your friend and the docker docs are quite good
Thanks
Google is also quite good
so is BING

bing is very popular, soo popular that it is on almost every computer out there
almost like someone is shoving it down your throat
I chuckle when Windows tries to persuade me to use IE/Edge/etc. as I'm downloading chrome, and MacOS does the same for Safari
And they're all basically chrome anyway
how to disable cache in dockerfile
did you search?
yes but they all suggest using build commands which i can't cause my cloud provider has auto build and i can't pass parameter
Yikes, I forgot how slow ripping from DVD was... and it's not a CPU bottleneck

Noticed something neat while looking at the graph of my bedroom temperature. You can clearly see when the room was occupied.
Interesting how much the 100-ish watts of heat a human produces matters.
Big brain idea: Presence detection by temperature
Kinda like PIR motion sensors
But a lot slower.
whats that website you can paste your logs into?
nvm
you know i just want the xbox intigration to let me mess with my wife
i wana hit x to reload while she is playing cod and mess with her

Most likely for hacking prevention
so i got this smart outlet, that if you plug a lamp with an led in it, it stays on, passes enough standby voltage for led's to light up
but with a duct fan pluged in, it doesnt seem to have enough to energize the fan
any ideas why it might do that?
My guess is transient leakage on the neutral
Which probably isn't switched
There are LED lights that never quite turn off when switched off, this is their story…

https://techcrunch.com/2020/09/30/element-acquires-gitter-to-get-more-developers-on-board-with-the-open-matrix-messaging-protocol/
Some interesting news for lovers of open, decentralized communications tech: Element, the company behind the eponymous Matrix-based Slack competitor (formerly known as Riot) has acquired developer-focused chat platform, Gitter, from dev services giant GitLab, which picked it up back in 2017. The ac…
Hm, interesting
old news, but from a dev perspective it's better in my (lite developer of other things) opinion. https://gitter.im connects to github easily, which can be easily bridged to https://matrix.org.
matrix rooms bridged from gitter are not e2ee'd, but encrypted rooms can be created on the matrix side separately.
not trying to stir the pot, just providing some information.

I suspect you want your install method channel

and you reply to a post without reading the whole thing.
as i said above, i'm not trying to stir the pot, just provide info.
I read it
Doesn't change that your first posts on joining the server were to stir up the pot... 😉
It's not like that's going to suddenly cause HA to shift over again
don't expect it to, just providing info.
@winter rampart When using Discord's new Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
where did HA start before discord?

The answer though is ... Gitter
It was too limited
Gitter sucks ass.
Nah, it's not evolved that far yet
I'd rather see HA move to IRC than back to Gitter.
thanks...@clever mortar 😉
I feel a kick coming up...
I’m sure there’s some irc integration for Ha
With some lib purple, it could probably send messages to Gitter
It usually is raccoons

It's all relative
I’ll bet Gitter doesn’t have that stupid auto tag on reply feature
This one?
That’s the one
@last cedar what you do now?
Then there’s my ongoing issue with unread messages not appearing. Discord support has escalated that
It’s driving me crazy
so yer telling me, that if discord continues on this path....you will go mentally unstable?
Let's just go back to bulletin boards.
You mean when the sidebar shows the channel in white, but there's nothing new there? Isn't that when a message was deleted?
Channels appear unread until I click on a channel. Then all the unread channels show up
Same with tags. I get the badge on the server, but nothing in the channel list until I click on something there
Web/Windows/MacOS/iOS - happens everywhere. Going on 3 weeks
It could be worse. On slack it says unread until I keep clicking the up button, then it keeps scrolling further and further up even if I’ve seen the thread since then
Clearing the unread takes like 30 seconds
I get annoyed at that, too, but I can just hit the "x" on the message to clear them
Hands up if you don't like bad taxidermy.

Hello all just new here !
time to build on stilts
It's now a ground coupled AC 😅
"Company quoting $20k for ground sourced heat pump"
Me buring my AC for free
A family member got 13” of water in their basement. They killed the power to their furnace, water heater, etc in advance. This morning they were water free and I told them to clean the circuit boards with distilled water before powering on, but they refused because the water would damage them more. They turned the power back on…now they’re at a hotel.
So close…
They also refused to buy a sump pump yesterday because they didn’t have a sump pit to put it in.
You and family safe and sound ?
Were you able to add it to home assistant? I might have to return mine if I can't get it to show up
@tidal bronze barely but yes sir thanks
Great to hear. 👍
ask jeeves
hi everyone, anyone her from nabu casa?
Her who?
What's your actual question?
how do u not break the HAOS filesystem?
how does it live for more than 5 months at a time without a total rebuild?
Easy
- Don't run #330990055533576204
- Ask for help with #330990055533576204 in the #330990055533576204 channel
A high quality SD card helps too.
just pissed cos its broken so many times on different SD cards then memory sticks now on its own pc with an SSD - lasted 3 weeks
brand new SSD also
never had a WD SSD fail on me after 3 weeks
its spent the night doing tests - the hardware is fine
Well, #330990055533576204 is the place for help if you want any with #330990055533576204
i think i will try the docker route
its power. power fluctuations lead to corruption, the best ssd/sd in the world will not change that when it does not get the proper power
Can confirm, Moses stone is still holding data after all these years, it is a power thing
If you want a "quick fix" for power issues, run things over PoE and put a UPS between the mains and your PoE switch. (You can get "shields" for Pi computers, for example)
That way you can keep the device small, and you were probably running ethernet to it already anyway.
I've not seen any actual PC's run on PoE, that'd be pretty impressive
Not done it with a PC tower, no.
The only issue with that is the whiney fans on the poe hats :(
Put it in the garage.
Then again, I just think PoE is the best thing since sliced bread. I'd have a PoE alarm clock if one existed 😉
You can get PoE for pi with out fans
After market
Not sure on current capacity though
in my case the power is a 500W Corsair PSU
its been running the same motherboard, CPU, RAM etc for about a year with no downtime other than when i am tinkering and updating it, so I do not think power is the issue
I never experienced corruption with normal operation, thus for me it is always power. i assumed you run on a pi where these things happen a lot (as you describe) - but still: 500W doesn‘t mean anything with bad cabling.
So I'm no pro athlete but this is a nice improvement on my 37 minute 5k's earlier this year:
Now I'm going to go die.
Almost got my fastest mile down to 8 minutes too. Still got a lot of work to do to beat Roger.
I’m surprised that people who use miles is minutes, not fractions of a quarter of a hand egg game
They should use the furlong–firkin–fortnights unit system instead. The speed of light is 1.8026e12 furlongs per fortnight.
How many odos to a quark
Urgh people with fireplaces in suburbs
Especially people who burn shit wood and don't maintain and operate their fireplaces properly
Get your crap out of my air
You can report them to the council here.
Nothing like that here
Okay everyone I have a random question. Does anyone use Tellstick?
I'll only use miles for distances while driving. If I'm running, it's km, because that's what race distances are measured in 🤷♂️
lol... well to be fair, it does look like a scrotum.
Yeah, we don't do spam here
And it's a referral link too, so they're not even doing it because they think they're being helpful.
shuld I spend ~600$ on a 4tb SSD... really really wnat to, but its nuts
which one?

Weren't Samsung one of the companies caught downgrading parts in their drives and still marketing them as the same model?
Not sure I'd trust them right now.
Yeah, specifically the 970 Evo Plus
No indication they've swapped parts on any of their other drives, as of yet
The 970 Evo Plus is one of their most popular SSDs, and given the current chip shortage, I can imagine they're having trouble building enough of them to meet demand
However, that doesn't excuse silently swapping components and continuing to sell it like nothing changed
This just means they haven't been caught yet...
WD and Samsung within weeks of each other, both using the same excuse.
If they need to use inferior parts, that's fine. Launch the resulting product under a new SKU.
WD swapped to inferior parts
samsung to their credit, swapped for similar
LG also swapped to inferior parts iirc
but yeah samsung was kinda sketchy on it.
潮玩客 first tested the old and new 970 Evo Plus drives using CrystalDiskMark, and the drives appeared near-identical. But that's because CrystalDiskMark by default uses a very small 1GiB test size, which clearly is not enough to exhaust either drive's write cache. (We at Ars frequently use CrystalDiskMark—but we select larger test sizes, for precisely this reason.)
In longer tests, both drives decrease sharply in performance as cache fills, which is expected. But while the older drive retains nearly two-thirds of its original performance, the newer version craters to less than a third. We can see this effect not only in artificial benchmarks, but also in large file copies, as seen in 潮玩客's later tests.
Large transfers result in way lower throughput compared to the original.
Half the performance 🤷♂️
anybody have recommendation for a 2 bay nas? i just want to put in big hdds, store data on it, raid 1 to be safe, low power and fast transfer
ideally with ssh and nfs access
looking at DS218 with 2x wd red 10tb now, maybe someone knows better
i rather stick with the original, i had a dsm running for more than 10 years now for off site backups in my parents house… which is not possible anymore now thus i search for something new now
i i got a small 2 bay synology nas
had i known about xepnology prior i wouldn't have purchased it though
even though it claims it's a 4 core 1.4ghz process and 512mb of ram
its pretty slow
cause i got a x5150 in my mechanical room with 4tb of storage. only reason i wanted it was cause of moments though
but with new dsm moments is no more
it's called "synology photo"
which doesn't include all the moments stuff
i just need storage + transfer speed, i have other machines which do the heavy crunching
exactly
as long as the case is black you're probably okay
the black ones are the ones that are supposed to do everything
i think you can even paravirt to some extent. idk about bare metal virt thugh
no need for all of that 😄 as i said i just want ssh and nfs combined with raid 1 and tramsfer speed
hi everyone, new member here, i got a question about a config on the config.yaml can anyone help me pointing to the right section?
What is the question?
well i hope i can answer this in a shortway, i want to track my phone so when i come home automations happened, i add a ping to it in the config.yaml (and it kind of works) but i want to experience with bluethooth device tracking, i got a code but its not working....

Hi, I live in a flat at the 3rd floor, and my gaz counter is in the caves at the -1 floor. I've no possibility to put a cable between the two, so I was wondering if there was some long range radio emiters/receivers for low bandwidth data, I would like to have my gaz cunsumption in home assistant
As mentioned in the channel topic, this isn't the place to ask that. You're probably best off asking in #hardware-archived
First time posting on this server. What is the right channel to ask for help regarding custom card installed through HACS? For god sake, I cannot figure how to add it to lovelace.
Thx
what is going on with the latest update on HA and supervisor? my setup is not working despite restart of HA and reboot of the server.
What's going on is that support questions go into support channels.
#330990055533576204 or #330944238910963714 depending on how you installed.
Oh, you already did. You just felt like crossposting?
@iron jay Please DO NOT cross post. Read the channel description, post it and wait for folks to respond.
If you don't get any responses after an hour or more, and your message is no longer on screen, it is fine to re-post or post a link to it.
just wanted to generally understand if something got reported. There was no intention of x posting. The other post contains details on my problem. Sorry if this is considered as X posting.
It is.
There's plenty of discussion in the relevant channels about the issue. Just scroll through or search the history to find it.
seems like I did not enough research. I looked in the HA_supervised channel only. could you be so kind and point me to a channel ? TIA.
Find your install method in

I'll point you at this:
Find the channel that matches
@iron jay When using Discord's new Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
They found the channel already. They're just crossposting here 🤷♂️
Where can I ask for bluetooth?
Well, that's down to the question - find the channel that best fits the question you have
If you can't work it out, as it says in the topic here, ask in #general-archived
Thx
I don’t see the appeal of supervised
The OS I get for the lazy or dedicated hardware, but at that point…why?
The HA devs would like to see it go away
You still have to manage the OS and overall it seems to be a net complication
it is
I ran supervised for a while for the addon store but switched to HA OS in a VM because that was way easier than maintaining an entire box
Go galaxy-brain and run VMWare ESXi on a Pi, then run HA OS on that 👌
Should work, though VMWare recommends using a Pi with 4 or 8GB of RAM so you can actually run more than one or two VMs
I’ll stick with my NUC, and super stable and not complex Debian install
I have no need to emulate hardware when I can simply containerize the software. Emulating hardware can make sense when running something like windows on top of Linux, but Linux on Linux it makes little sense. A lot of overhead for no benefit.
I use proxmox but I'm over virtualising
I'll probably swap to freenas scale
Although that looks a bit second rate for configuration as code
Proxmox is a good hybrid model. As I understand it, it can emulate hardware or just containerize
Worried about incompatibilities, emulate hardware, otherwise, software
I’m working with a large social media platform at the moment and their entire infrastructure are essentially task-specific docker containers. They can spin up automatically as load increases, and destroy to save AWS instance costs when load drops. Misbehaving instances just get destroyed. Cluster swarms and such are obviously a thing but it’s a pretty neat model to see how it works at scale, distributed across the globe
They also routinely destroy and recreate so even if one is breached, it’s time limited
I can't get proxmox working with usb passthrough
I'm doing everything right, it just doesn't work
I'll probably move over to truenas and k8s eventually
Are you using ecs or eks
I think it’s eks. I’m a bit on the outside. Their lawyer, just helping with some issues that require me to understand their entire software development lifecycle and network OPs/cyber security
Just be glad it's not serverless
this is magnificent
I am a terrible person
I gave up on Proxmox. Too little support, no easy migration path to or from other virtualization software, no real backup software for it, etc
Currently running ESXi, thinking of switching to RHV / OVirt
OVirt is basically "RedHat does vSphere"
Runs virtual machines and containers, like Proxmox, but honestly seems better in every way. Veeam just added support for it, as well, so I can even keep my backup chains intact
Just need to put some storage in my virtualization hosts. They're currently running from MicroSD cards (because ESXi is an embedded OS), but pretty much any other solution (oVirt, Proxmox, Hyper-V, etc) is a full-fat OS that needs real local storage
I assume these are the exhibits?
So... I bought a Dyson vacuum yesterday without telling my SO...
It's going back to the store today 😦
Bugger. I've got the V8. it's very handy for cleaning up the bits the robots miss.
And the robot filters.
That was my plan too. A complement to the robot for upholstery and stuff.
Lol. Machine translated reviews... "If you want the best cleaning detergent circular, search no further (if you want the best cleaning tool around, look no further)" "the top of Dysons cordless empty space area ( vacuum range)" "places the glove downwards (I think you get this one)" "all the new clocks and pipes (bells and whistles)".
But as we say in Sweden, there's no danger on the roof, I get what they mean.
places the glove downwards = hands down?
Or throwing down the gauntlet? 🤔
I do love 'empty space area'.
That was a bit of interpretation from my side. In Swedish "vakum" for "vacuum" is used strictly in the scientific sense. The correct word to use translates directly to "dust-sucker".
Which makes it equally hilarious both ways.
Scandinavian and Germanic languages make things way too literal. Boring 😂
At least 'vacuum cleaner' explains how, not just what.
Oh right. You're at the zoo. Had me worried there for a second.
Daughter has decided she's scared of lions
To be fair she was like 2ft away from them
Did you put her in the enclosure? 😱
Survival of the fittest

hi, ive been setting up my Home Assistant at home and quite a few people have suggested trying to turn it into a sort of product (smartifying peoples houses). I was wondering what you guys thought of this; is it a good or bad idea? would it actually be profitable? have people tried setting this sort of thing up before?
To answer the last point, yes people have
You'd better be pretty awesome at HA and the platform you run it on though, and there's a bunch of forum threads touching on the things you should consider
Profitable depends on where in the world and what the whole service you plan on offering would be
Good or bad... this is a platform that's constantly evolving. Cloud services change or shut down all the time, or break. You need to handle that, and far more
im not awesome at it atm, however I am fairly quick at learning and have a decent amount of programming experience already so assuming I could set up a default home assistant instance with all the integrations I could need and a nice dashboard I could go in and setup a couple shelly-1s and some other sensors to do things such as smartify lights, doorbell and garage door fairly quickly
You're qualified for electrical work in your country?
You need to ensure you have suitable insurance, and all the other red tape required for running a business
no, however my country has access to courses that can enable you to get qualified over things like 6 month courses where you go in once a week so it isnt really a problem
so if I decided to set it up and decided on a suitable business model I could do that course while further familiarising myself with Home Assistant and get started after that
but yeah ive realised over the past couple months that my brain is kinda just wired to programming so where I struggle to focus and concentrate on normal things I can spend like 10 hours straight debugging errors trying to setup devices no problem lmao
so thought it could be cool to monetise that haha
You'll want to learn more too. You need to learn the operations side too - how to keep systems running, remote access, troubleshooting system failures, etc.
yeah that would all be awesome to learn and get working haha
also, on a completely unrelated note, how come home assistant doesnt officially support running homeassistant supervised as a docker instance?
Because it's not a Docker image...
There's a pinned image in #general-archived that explains it more
Also, stay away from Supervised
Supervised is not your friend, particularly if you're not an experienced system admin
oh okay, Ive been using supervised as I wanted to use the add-ons and couldnt be stuffed researching a way to do it in homeassistant os/container
lmao, as I said im very much not amazing at this stuff but am loving learning abt it
See the topic of #330944238910963714 for why it's a mistake, and that channel can explain more about it
Another point: don't expect a warm welcome here if you're charging your clients and asking us to support you with your problems (for free...).
yeah that absolutely makes sense
If you're going to run a business, you'd better make sure you have the support sorted for your clients.
i didnt know if that was something I should be looking into or not as a couple people have suggested I look at it, however atm I am just working on setting it up around my house
You can, but it will take a fair bit of technical clue, and business knowledge, to actually make it work profitably
yeah I think thats overall what I got, it is possible but maybe after a couple more years of figuring out the technical side of Home Assistant
I'll also warn you that being IT support is a shit job, your clients will expect miracles from you and won't understand why you can't just "do magic"
fair warning🤣
also im very grateful for all of your guys help the community around Home Assistant has made this process a much much more fun experience
and very promising for future proofing considering how active the community is and how constant updates are
Yeah, there's plenty of love for it. It's one of the most popular projects on GitHub.
also I was wondering about your viewpoint on this; are you suggesting I shouldnt try and monetize Home Assistant because its against the idea of open source projects or too not expect to get help for projects im getting paid for for free
The license HA is released under allows people to basically do whatever they want with it.
becuase I very much dont want to get pushed away from the community for doing this as it is a big part of why I like HA
I'm just saying that some people here won't be too happy giving free technical support to someone knowing that they're raking it in from their clients.
A few folks have paid clients for HA, and then come here asking for help regularly, for their clients. That goes down rather poorly.
Hey, I'm being paid money for this, help me for free
We're basically doing your job for you if you come here asking how to fix your clients' issues.
yeah that makes sense
i doubt I will ever end up trying to turn it into a product but ill keep that in mind (and if I do end up needing help ill monetize the support 🙂 )
If you're going to learn HA well and keep on top of all the changes, maybe you're capable of supporting your clients without our help. No-one would care about that.
if I do end up needing help ill monetize the support
You don't want to know people's day rates 😂
A lot of us are full-time techies, with the salaries you'd expect to go with it... if someone wants to pay for overtime... 💰 💰 💰
okay, thank you for helping me out 🙂 it's good to know the whole community wouldnt hate me if I do end up doing it (as long as I dont ask for help)
@hushed breach When using Discord's new Reply feature it defaults to pinging the person you reply to, which can get frustrating for the target. Click @ ON to @ OFF to stop this - on the right side of the compose bar.
Day rates for many of us will measure in the multiple thousands of $/€/£
If you're not coming in here asking for help, the community wouldn't know to hate you 😂
I'm sure there are plenty of people working as installers that we don't know about. But there are a few that we do know about that ask for our help regularly...
ah yeah I get how that can be incredibly irksome
also side note; I am loving the ESP8266 chip and how versatile it is lmao
it has made my life a lot easier especially with ESPhome
Give the ESP32 some love too. It's chunkier and a little more expensive but great for applications that need Bluetooth. I use one to listen for the broadcasts from some Xiaomi plant sensors that send measurements over BLE.
the only reason I havent looked into it much at all yet is because the main devices Ive been working with are some ESP8266 dev boards and shelly 1s so I havent had a chance to mess around with ESP32's yet
Fair enough. They're almost identical anyway, and support ESPHome/Tasmota/others.
There's a new chip coming out that's got people excited too, since it's an ESP with Zigbee
ooo thats exciting
But no wifi
Where we're going, we don't need WiFi
It's got BT, though.
what are the advantages of using bluetooth over wifi?
There are none.
thats probs a really dumb question
Well, BLE is nice... but you'll still find that a lot of Bluetooth and WiFi stuff depends on proprietary apps.
🤢
Worse speed
Worse channel choices
Worse security
So just over all worse situation 🙂
Mesh networks don't have that limitation, which is why many of us prefer Zigbee/Z-Wave for smart devices.
thats why I flashed all my shellys with ESPhome they have great products and a garbage app

I used it for about 3 seconds before getting sick of it and deciding to use something else lmao
i should head to bed but thank you for answering all my random ass questions and putting up with me 🙂
ok damages are coming in
- shed 4500
- contents 3000
- roof 3000
- insulation underneath 5000
- HVAC unit 2000
thats all i have so far still in 6 inches of mud and prolly without power for a month
gen for half a day because gas is no where to be found and food is mostly cold out of a can or cooked on a camp stove
oh and a apc that seemed to like fail ....it was a 1500 apc ....we where using to run a fan during the day
shit is rough right now to be honest
and i still have tree on front of house leaning on it and in rear a root ball lifting it about 2 inches
I am so thankfull that everybody was concerned and asked how we are .....Thank you so much
@tidal bronze @deft pewter thought i would tag ya since yall asked
thank you @clever mortar
Any insurance that’s going to cover that? Or on your own?
I'm glad you're all ok... stuff can be replaced (even if that's cold comfort...). Hope that:
a) The insurance comes through quickly
b) You can get a hold of people to do the work
Nah, no reaction to that damage and the impact to you and your family is over the top... well, not from this distance anyway 😄
I've had friends and family flooded out of property before, without structural damage, and I know how disruptive that is
By the time you roll in those trees...
Yeaaaah, about that... https://www.esp32.com/viewtopic.php?t=23094&p=82998
Espressif ESP32 Official Forum
If you have any ESP32 based devices, now would be the time to update your SDK version and firmware
Bug in the bluetooth library makes them vulnerable to remote shutdown and remote code execution
If someone's within BT range of mine, all bets are off already 😂
Except ESP32s are in things that you might carry around with you in public. There are a number of headphones and earbuds that are vulnerable
They're also in home security equipment, so running unpatched might make it possible to remotely disarm or disable various sensors during a break-in
Not a great thing
If they're already in my home, it's a bit late. I don't have a moat or spike pits.
Wasn't aware they're used in portable devices though.
Don't need to be in your home, just need to point an antenna at it
It's a flood attack, so receiving traffic back doesn't matter
You could be hundreds of feet away and disable a swath of ESP32 devices wherever you point your directional antenna
I can imagine this being especially problematic in environments like coffee shops, hotels, apartments, and airports
Lots of people waiting around with mobile devices
Also, adult toys often have ESP32s in them, so there's that to worry about 😂
Hacking my adult toy is a bad thing? I mean, someone else taking the wheel 🤷🏼♂️
Just thinking out loud here 🤣
If we're going to be sharing random animal-related stuff, what about animals with hands up their bottoms?

Really sorry to hear that, hope you can rebuild quickly
2/3 of my esxi vms migrated to proxmox... time to move HA over...
And then the fire burns 🔥
@amber bramble how you making the migration work? Last time I tried, the disk conversion was a huge pain in the ass, and none of my VMs would boot on Proxmox due to massive virtual hardware changes
I managed to coax one into booting, but only with the disk controller in IDE mode, so performance was terrible
got them to all transfer relatively easy
How? Is there a conversation tool now?
used the vmware ovftool to pull them from esxi and then proxmox's qm importovf to import
Yeah, tried that, no dice
Proxmox refused to load the ovf without modification (because it doesn't support ESXi 6.5's default disk controller, so can't map any disks), and then do a manual conversion of the VMDK disk files because Proxmox also doesn't support those
ESXi uses a virtual SCSI/SAS controller by default, Proxmox only really supports SATA and IDE. Caused all kinds of problems when booting the guest OS
The NICs also changed to the point that it broke a lot of things. Lots of services just stopped working because the NIC they were bound to was gone
i had to tweak the NIC settings on one machine and the virtual GPU on another machine, but otherwise it was easier than i expected
Wound up just staying on ESXi. Even besides the conversation issues, couldn't find a decent way to run backups on Proxmox
Looking at RHV / oVirt now
I know that there is a virtio-scsi device in qemu…
Does proxmox not expose it? Windows need extra drivers to run with it, because they don’t do virtio by default
Currently, I am running home assistant on Rasp pi 4b. planning to buy other hardware which is better than rasp pi 4. Could you please suggest any similar device with good configuration
like intel NUC mini pcs..
The Blue? 🙂
is there a way to change the layout of the cards on the UI?
#frontend-archived will be able to help you
thx
Damnit, I'm getting old. Starting buying quiches from M&S for my lunch... 👴
But they taste good right?
Sure do. We've gone full-blown snob lately and do most of our shopping there now 😂
There are two supermarkets near us, M&S and Tesco. During the first 6 months of lockdown, people were absolute twats in Tesco. Fighting with security, standing right over you with no masks, etc. Haven't gone back since.
Now I shop with all the elderly, middle class folk 😂
Aww, man. You can't link just the picture. We miss out on the alt text.
This shit is getting depressing ... cant even clean up ......... trees laying in yard 36inch ones $80 every couple of days for gas ...6 inches of mud in yard ...... no running water ....
Do they have any idea of how long before you can start cleanup?
nope

mud is biggest problem ...just imagine trying to do anything with 6 inches clinging to your boot
Yeah, bad enough without mud
I'd a family member who was flooded for a few days and the cleanup for that took months. Oddly all the trades in the area were busy with house repairs
Where do you physically put the mud when you remove it
Hi. Is there any way to request a support with HA? I have a problem I can't resolve for 2 days now and can't get anyone to respond to me...
Brilliant
Amazon App with one click purchase is bad for my wallet
Probably back in the tornado alley so it caan get thrown back in a couple of years
Only thing you can do is post in the right channel and follow the advice in the second half of #rules about how to ask good questions. If it relates to your recent posts in #energy-archived then the #energy-archived feature is new, so whatever your problem is may not be well known/understood yet.
If you've found an actual bug you can always open an issue, but if it's a request for support the devs will simply close it.
🤣
Made a coffee on the work espresso machine for the first time
Nfi what I'm doing, made it extremely strong
Got caffeine jitters
I have this idea - I have a PC case with a micro ATX mobo in it thats running HA but inside the case there is a lot of extra room so I am going to put in a couple of Raspberry PI also. On the front panel I want to install some LEDs and a touch screen running conky or glances to show stats and temps etc. Also I would love to have some LEDs that show ethernet port activity and link LEDs from each of the machines. Does anyone have an idea how to do this? Could it be a soldering job on each of the ports then pass wires from each port? Could it be done on a software level and use HA to make a sensor and make that activate the LEDs? Help!! 😉
Sounds like #diy-archived
will post it in there
Good day you beautiful people
Sorry if I am not supposed to ask here, but anyone know a good way to get Wyze cameras as an entity on a dashboard as an RTSP? I know about the Wyze firmware to make them give RTSP, but all I’ve seen online is to use motionEye which gives the streams, but doesn’t look like you can add a camera as an entity
@peak dragon There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived.
If it's a question about the HA Blue start in #330990055533576204. Install related problems go to your Installation Method channel.

hey, depending on the language that's a difference between true int and true-ish
Always remember the !! pattern in c++
or C for what it's worth
Gotta love when you see someone using true/false as a string rather than as a bool...
Always cringe-worthy
I love that in JS. Great for something that might have a value and might be undefined. Flip it twice and you know which it was.
yea, the not not pattern is pretty helpful, when the language works that way
I've never had to use it in a strongly typed language like c, though 🤔
...but come to think of it that's probably just because of my patterns...
Plaid? Polka?
I know it's Wikipedia but...
A programming language that requires a variable to be defined, and the variable it is. For example, C is a strongly typed language. When declaring the variable, you must also specify the variable type.
The whole point is you declare the type at the same time as the variable, and can't just assign random shit to it.
Pointers are a little different given that you're not storing a value, you're... pointing at one.
ehh, when you go a bit further into the language theory part, that definition is static vs. dynamic
And then C with it's lot of implicit conversions weakly typed vs. e.g. Haskell which is strongly typed and requires explicit conversions everywhere
Pointers screwed with my brain when I first learned about them. Took me a while to "get" the idea.
I had troubles getting people to understand pointers that did assembly the semester before 😄
After a couple of evenings trying to understand pointers, I've simply decided I won't work with C again 😂
Mono, I counter your wikipedia with another wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strong_and_weak_typing#Implicit_type_conversions_and_"type_punning"
In computer programming, one of the many ways that programming languages are colloquially classified is whether the language's type system makes it strongly typed or weakly typed (loosely typed). However, there is no precise technical definition of what the terms mean and different authors disagree about the implied meaning of the terms and the ...
Pointers are just like file system links||, except where they're not||
pointers are just usize_t ||except when they are not||
I wonder how much breaks on x32 because of that fact

what is the consensus on HP smartvault SD Cards?
pieces of junk that need to be disabled? or necessary?
how do you think ms is going to support their own surface line?
Hmm? Do they not have tpm? At least in firmware
yes
Easy. Move from cron to systemd timer units and give the weekly service an after= on the daily one
no hardware but intel made a software version
The firmware ones are somewhere in between software and hardware
They still have their own storage and run in elevated modes, from what I have seen
The odd actual software variants as well though
opencore efi patches for audio, all I need is to add a tpm module
or make one
old macbooks have some dumb shit efi
opencore to fix all of the pre boot shit and drivers
Yes. 32bit as well iirc
64bit efi here
Do you know what’s used as nvram with the open core fTPM? I assume it still needs a CPU that supports it?
I recommend having a check at the beginning of the script to check if it's already running

I support raccoons even when I'm not on a diet...
I never said it has to be a good diet 😄
Have 2 2011 MacBook pro for random testing. Can't boot debian 11 and when I do a debian 10 full upgrade I can't boot 5.x. just get stuck try loading initram. That was a fun one -_-
Well, I got it up and running with way less pain than I expected.
I had a nightmare involving raccoons last night. Was weird
There was a whole bunch of them attacking me and for some reason they were had claws and were clawing through coconuts I was holding in my hands for some reason. At that point I probably woke up because the absurdity of it all. Should I seek help?

i dunno if this is offtopic. but i or i should say we solved the Home Assistant Container install option. so it can be installed on whatever distro/os you like from docker with full access. Supervised and you name it. want something done, you have to do it yourself as my old man used to say
No, it's not off-topic. It's about HA, so it goes in the 'on-topic' channels 🤯
And yes, you can install it however you want... as long as you're happy with not getting support when it breaks. Which is what you were told yesterday already 🤯
Only 3 months left for me to re-watch all the Matrix movies before the sequel 😮 Need to convince the missus to watch them too, as she's never seen them.
Wouldn't be fair to make her watch the new one without knowing the backstory, right?
Never seen them
I know, right? She's not a sci-fi fan but it's almost inexcusable to never have seen the Matrix.
Even just the original would be acceptable.

Gah. Going through an AWS training course and some of the things the trainer comes out with make me die a little inside...

That'd be dangerously close to #on-topic
Today I found somebody who uses btrfs
It's awesome!
One of my preowned 3 TB drives broke down, so I replaced it with a new 10 TB one, rebalanced and could use all of the new space with "RAID5" immediately. Can't do that with zfs.
Now with debian11 it's even better.
I'm going to jump out a window soon. This trainer is teaching that you have to press Esc between each command in vi. 🤯
They haven't left normal mode. What is this madness?
Good news, more than half of trainers are barely qualified to cover the core course material
Yeah, I'm getting that.
The course in general is okay. Just some of the things they come out with. No idea why they're even shoehorning some vi in there. It's not relevant to the course at all.
I do that all the time by reflex. Keep closing popups. It sucks.
'Look at me, I know how to use Linux'
My bad habits are mostly a result of switching between Mac and Windows several times per day. I always reach for the wrong key.
same. they let you rebind some the keys a bit but that dies once you remote desktop into something from there
I use a mac to remote desktop into windows to use wsl2 to connect to linux servers
at me
I'm starting to build the muscle memory now... I just sometimes forget to switch the built-in profile on my keyboard to switch the Mac/Win keys around.
I am completely fucked. I need to see if I can redo all of my mac stuff
I use capslock as a function key normally. and jkli are arrow keys
my mac is always in capslock mode and jkli are always being inserted
I undo most of the things I input into my mac
jkli is nasty... use hjkl like a real dev.
lol, my custom keyboard died and I quickly replaced it with a ducky
need to build one again eventually
I miss QMK
QMK 🔥
Wife didn't understand why I was programming a keyboard when she didn't have to program hers 😂
Favourite cap profile? Here's where we find out what kind of monster you are.
no i am not asking for help, never said i was so i dont understand why you keep saying that, but the project is free to develop anyway i want right ? no copyrights or patents in the code ?
You asked what support we said you won't get. petro explained. What's not to get?
I was answering your question that you keep asking...
don't get all bet bent out of shape because I replied
Be nice to each other now
no i am not, but i wasnt asking a question about getting support if i develop something of my own. i was asking the question if it was free to do whatever i like with the code ? atleast my english
you literally ask 'why is it not supported' and I answered...
word for word what you asked: what support are you reffering to ?
Honestly if you want to support something join the dev team and get consensus
im sorry, i was ironic when asking that. my bad
how about acting serious when asking a question instead of slathering everything in sarcasm. There's a reason everyone is being negative towards you.
After the first impression you made yesterday, it's probably time to put in some effort by being positive and friendly.
or leaving.
mono, I haven't experimented, lol. I use cherry
but just as yesterday, i got criticism instead of answers. i will ask just one question now and then i dont need to ask anymore
I saw the entire thread yesterday, you didn't like the answers. Everyone gave you the same answer and you were upset with the responses because they weren't what you were looking for.
is it ok to use the sourcecode for HA and all its glory to develop how you choose to develop it ? if i have missed the answer to that question i do appologize
You can fork the supervisor to your hearts content
As with everything, all you have to do is comply with the license
the core and its belongings then ?
which should be included in the repo
It’s not supported because idgaf to support it
you can fork it all
Welcome to open source
The support from the devs and the community on this project is outstanding.
just don't sell it
It really is
Or expect support/help
that too
thank you, i have already done so, well not only me. but i just want to ask the question so we dont break any laws
I really love my HA frigate camera object detection dashboard
When you use HA like an NVR
but if i develop something that i can do whatever i want with, am i not free to license it and profit from it ?
Not if the license for HA forbids it,.
Go read the license.
If you don't understand it, ask a lawyer.
what he said
You can sell support and or hardware
Sell a device with support, but be really to offer support
i am a lawyer, but i did not know there was a license, hence me asking my questions
And people do, for varying definitions of support
LOL
hmm i thought you were a aircraft engineer
well i was a lawyer in early years, boring as hell
Aircraft engineering and lawyering... busy life.
and i own two companies aswell
License is with the source code?
In the code, and on the site, which has been repeatedly linked to
It's even one of the more straightforward licenses
i actually do own two companies. Pm me if you want the details
somone did not belive me
but no one really cares about day jobs here, this is for automation
It's the internet, nobody cares that you're a dog/cat/martian/robot/swarm AI
raccoons, maybe
We all share a few passions. Home Assistant, tech, and raccoons.
you can spout whatever you want in offtopic tho, so talk away
We are assholes on the internet
And in some cases in real life
As soon as some one goes look at my epin
Guilty 😅
soo soo small
My wife keeps telling me “don’t be evil”
ye my companies fit in quite well in the world of tech. i have a passion for airplanes aswell, so beeing an engineer in the field has given me a lot. just saying how it is. and i can agree that engineers can be really annoying from time to time, its built into the job description
Glad to hear you do your job well.
Hold on, I got this, if you are really a company owner, send me 20k as proof plox
Is that how the internet verifies?
in dollars or euro ?
Bitcoin...
he's a Nigerian Prince
I want it in legal counseling
how many hours
converts to 20k
20k hours?
Lol
nah i dont sell nor give away my bitcoins.
well in viatnamese dong you can have a few seconds
who doesnt
but no one actually said the currency
And before drug lord with companies as fronts
Raccoons are my nemisis
actually havent tried that, but making money involves beeing dishonest
Please, you need to get into healthcare
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ moving hands there
It’s mind blowing how much 1 lab moves
we live in a world where no one cares about anoyone else then themselves.
and $$$$$$$$ is what everything revolves about
its tragic, but thats how it works
well thanks for the chat, ill read up on the license and see how to approach that, there is always a way. take care
It’s called sell hardware and or support
Like crossover wine
You buy the support and they end up giving back to the project with fixes
They have real devs tho
then you came to the wrong neighborhood my dude
I can live with one racoons, but we will do coding battle! (nerd version of rapping or fight battle)
I'm swapping out some drives in one of my NASes to increase the space and resyncing after adding each of 4 drives is going to take forever. Even with Synology's "Fast repair" mode
it just finished repairing the volume with the first disk and I was ready with the next one, but it immediately moved to "data scrubbing" which will take another 1-2 days. ugh
How big is the array? My Synology can complete a scrub in less than a day... and it's running 12x 4TB drives...
Repairs take over a day, but scrubs are relatively fast
Running a scrub right now 😦
