Cyan Worlds seems to like using Myst remakes as a testing ground for new engine technologies. They remade Myst in the Plasma engine before using it for URU: Ages Beyond Myst. They remade Myst in the Unity engine before using it for Obduction. Now they've remade Myst in Unreal Engine 4 before using it in Firmament

deft pewter
#

It's cool if they want to use it as a test... but they're charging full price for a test.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, because it's a full game made from scratch... they didn't just dump their old assets from 1993 into Unreal Engine and call it a day.

#

I didn't hear anyone begging for free copies of "Wolfenstien: The Old Blood" because they had purchased "Return to Castle Wolfenstien" back in 2001

#

The former also being a remake of the latter

#

Skyrim is probably the game that actually deserves some vitriol over its re-releases, as very little has changed between the original release and the latest re-release. It's still on the same version of the Gamebryo engine, with all the same assets, though at least they were nice enough to re-compile the engine binary in 64bit

deft pewter
#

Eh. If people are dumb enough to spend money multiple times on the same game with a few more pixels, that's their choice. I'm not in that camp.

subtle pasture
#

apparently remaking all assets from scratch is just "a few more pixels". Aight...

#

In the case of Myst, I'd say the jump from the 1993 version of the game, which was a slideshow of 256-color, 640x480, pre-rendered, still images, to the 2021 version of the game, which is a full real-time 3D game, is probably worth the re-purchase

brisk glen
#

and before same assets stretched over 3d objects

I actually got caught by that the other day... mom had some computer problems, something about file permissions.
She's using a mac - basically BSD - so I thought it was an actual problem.
Then after she brought the computer all the way over here I realized the problem was only in Microsoft word... so of course a reboot fixed it...

#

Felt doubly foolish when that made me remember a reboot was the fix the last time she had the same problem too 🤦‍♂️

midnight adder

#

I quite like some of the fancy knives you see on /r/edc but I have no need for them.

#

Also, butter knife laws 😢

clever mortar
#

I have no great need of the Gerber, but it was free

#

Handy for keeping in the car

deft pewter
#

Oh no... that'd be premeditation 😂

clever mortar
#

I'd be far more worried about the tyre iron or fire extinguisher personally 😄

deft pewter
#

Those have legit uses in/around a car though. Police are mongs when it comes to multitools or folding knives.

#

I get why... but they take it too far.

clever mortar
#

Eh, I think it's a lot of situational - I've never had a problem, but then I've never had a problem with the police. Any interactions have always been polite and calm

#

I'm not going to get pulled over for doing 50 in a 20 and then go off on the police...

#

Worst encounter I've had was getting a ticket for being parked in a no parking zone, 1 minute after the restrictions started. I was annoyed, but it was pretty clear I was annoyed at myself for not noticing ablobjoy

deft pewter
#

I've never had trouble either but the consequences are ridiculous. Isn't it something like 5 years of jail time just for possession of an illegal knife in public? And that's when it's not even clear when it's acceptable.

#

Going camping... carry a knife. Going into town for drinks... don't carry a knife. What about the range of activities in the middle?

clever mortar
#

So, carry one with a folding blade under 3 inches and you'll be fine 😛

pliant niche
#

That sounds like an insane amount of time for just carrying a knife, considering that you sometimes need to buy knifes and get them home

clever mortar
#

That's fine

deft pewter
#

If they were still in their packaging and you were travelling home from the shops, I think they'd let you off.

clever mortar
#

But wandering around with the knife 3 days later, not so fine

deft pewter
#

It's when you have a 6 inch kitchen knife down the back of your trousers that they'll be suspicious.

#

And some inner city areas in the UK have awful problems with knife crime, so it's understandable that they're strict about it.

pliant niche
#

I guess a lot of it is up to the common sense of the police too

deft pewter
#

Common sense 😂

#

We all know it ain't that common.

pliant niche
#

True, true

clever mortar
#

I suppose I'm also a bit eh about it since I spent years doing archery, and carrying around a bow and arrows in public

#

Frankly those are way more dangerous than some piddly little knife ablobjoy

deft pewter
#

Way less concealable too though.

clever mortar
#

Somewhat, true

deft pewter
#

Knives are nasty. You'd never know someone's carrying until it's too late.

#

I used to have a friend in York that found an old law, that you could kill a Scot if he was openly carrying a bow in York, or something like that

Weren't Samsung one of the companies caught downgrading parts in their drives and still marketing them as the same model?

#

Not sure I'd trust them right now.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, specifically the 970 Evo Plus

#

No indication they've swapped parts on any of their other drives, as of yet

#

The 970 Evo Plus is one of their most popular SSDs, and given the current chip shortage, I can imagine they're having trouble building enough of them to meet demand

#

However, that doesn't excuse silently swapping components and continuing to sell it like nothing changed

deft pewter
#

WD and Samsung within weeks of each other, both using the same excuse.

#

If they need to use inferior parts, that's fine. Launch the resulting product under a new SKU.

bitter pawn
#

WD swapped to inferior parts

#

samsung to their credit, swapped for similar

#

LG also swapped to inferior parts iirc

#

but yeah samsung was kinda sketchy on it.

deft pewter
#

潮玩客 first tested the old and new 970 Evo Plus drives using CrystalDiskMark, and the drives appeared near-identical. But that's because CrystalDiskMark by default uses a very small 1GiB test size, which clearly is not enough to exhaust either drive's write cache. (We at Ars frequently use CrystalDiskMark—but we select larger test sizes, for precisely this reason.)

In longer tests, both drives decrease sharply in performance as cache fills, which is expected. But while the older drive retains nearly two-thirds of its original performance, the newer version craters to less than a third. We can see this effect not only in artificial benchmarks, but also in large file copies, as seen in 潮玩客's later tests.

#

Large transfers result in way lower throughput compared to the original.

#

Half the performance 🤷‍♂️

Proxmox is a good hybrid model. As I understand it, it can emulate hardware or just containerize

#

Worried about incompatibilities, emulate hardware, otherwise, software

#

I’m working with a large social media platform at the moment and their entire infrastructure are essentially task-specific docker containers. They can spin up automatically as load increases, and destroy to save AWS instance costs when load drops. Misbehaving instances just get destroyed. Cluster swarms and such are obviously a thing but it’s a pretty neat model to see how it works at scale, distributed across the globe

They also routinely destroy and recreate so even if one is breached, it’s time limited

#

hi, ive been setting up my Home Assistant at home and quite a few people have suggested trying to turn it into a sort of product (smartifying peoples houses). I was wondering what you guys thought of this; is it a good or bad idea? would it actually be profitable? have people tried setting this sort of thing up before?

clever mortar
#

To answer the last point, yes people have

#

You'd better be pretty awesome at HA and the platform you run it on though, and there's a bunch of forum threads touching on the things you should consider

#

Profitable depends on where in the world and what the whole service you plan on offering would be

#

Good or bad... this is a platform that's constantly evolving. Cloud services change or shut down all the time, or break. You need to handle that, and far more

hushed breach
#

im not awesome at it atm, however I am fairly quick at learning and have a decent amount of programming experience already so assuming I could set up a default home assistant instance with all the integrations I could need and a nice dashboard I could go in and setup a couple shelly-1s and some other sensors to do things such as smartify lights, doorbell and garage door fairly quickly

clever mortar
#

You're qualified for electrical work in your country?

#

You need to ensure you have suitable insurance, and all the other red tape required for running a business

hushed breach
#

no, however my country has access to courses that can enable you to get qualified over things like 6 month courses where you go in once a week so it isnt really a problem

#

so if I decided to set it up and decided on a suitable business model I could do that course while further familiarising myself with Home Assistant and get started after that

#

but yeah ive realised over the past couple months that my brain is kinda just wired to programming so where I struggle to focus and concentrate on normal things I can spend like 10 hours straight debugging errors trying to setup devices no problem lmao

#

so thought it could be cool to monetise that haha

clever mortar
#

You'll want to learn more too. You need to learn the operations side too - how to keep systems running, remote access, troubleshooting system failures, etc.

hushed breach
#

yeah that would all be awesome to learn and get working haha

#

also, on a completely unrelated note, how come home assistant doesnt officially support running homeassistant supervised as a docker instance?

clever mortar
#

Because it's not a Docker image...

#

Also, stay away from Supervised

#

Supervised is not your friend, particularly if you're not an experienced system admin

hushed breach
#

deft pewter
#

Another point: don't expect a warm welcome here if you're charging your clients and asking us to support you with your problems (for free...).

hushed breach
#

yeah that absolutely makes sense

deft pewter
#

If you're going to run a business, you'd better make sure you have the support sorted for your clients.

hushed breach
#

i didnt know if that was something I should be looking into or not as a couple people have suggested I look at it, however atm I am just working on setting it up around my house

clever mortar
#

You can, but it will take a fair bit of technical clue, and business knowledge, to actually make it work profitably

hushed breach
#

yeah I think thats overall what I got, it is possible but maybe after a couple more years of figuring out the technical side of Home Assistant

clever mortar
#

I'll also warn you that being IT support is a shit job, your clients will expect miracles from you and won't understand why you can't just "do magic"

hushed breach
#

also im very grateful for all of your guys help the community around Home Assistant has made this process a much much more fun experience

deft pewter

hushed breach

becuase I very much dont want to get pushed away from the community for doing this as it is a big part of why I like HA

deft pewter
#

I'm just saying that some people here won't be too happy giving free technical support to someone knowing that they're raking it in from their clients.

clever mortar
#

A few folks have paid clients for HA, and then come here asking for help regularly, for their clients. That goes down rather poorly.

Hey, I'm being paid money for this, help me for free

deft pewter
#

We're basically doing your job for you if you come here asking how to fix your clients' issues.

hushed breach

i doubt I will ever end up trying to turn it into a product but ill keep that in mind (and if I do end up needing help ill monetize the support 🙂 )

Sorry if I am not supposed to ask here, but anyone know a good way to get Wyze cameras as an entity on a dashboard as an RTSP? I know about the Wyze firmware to make them give RTSP, but all I’ve seen online is to use motionEye which gives the streams, but doesn’t look like you can add a camera as an entity

hey, depending on the language that's a difference between true int and true-ish
Always remember the !! pattern in c++

C isn't strongly typed :/

#

At least not for base types or pointers

deft pewter
#

I know it's Wikipedia but...

A programming language that requires a variable to be defined, and the variable it is. For example, C is a strongly typed language. When declaring the variable, you must also specify the variable type.

#

The whole point is you declare the type at the same time as the variable, and can't just assign random shit to it.

#

Pointers are a little different given that you're not storing a value, you're... pointing at one.

glacial knot
#

ehh, when you go a bit further into the language theory part, that definition is static vs. dynamic
And then C with it's lot of implicit conversions weakly typed vs. e.g. Haskell which is strongly typed and requires explicit conversions everywhere

Pointers screwed with my brain when I first learned about them. Took me a while to "get" the idea.

In computer programming, one of the many ways that programming languages are colloquially classified is whether the language's type system makes it strongly typed or weakly typed (loosely typed). However, there is no precise technical definition of what the terms mean and different authors disagree about the implied meaning of the terms and the ...
