Bosch smarthome is awesome. If you spend a ton of money for their oven, cooktop, and rangehoods, you can allegedly preheat the oven when you start a recipe, autostart the rangehood based on your use of the stove, and probably help you not burn the house down by leaving stuff on

#

If only I could feed the info from all the recipe books I buy into google home that would be helpful. I always put the oven on when I get to when I need it preheated already

glacial knot

God damn architrave switches. My place is full of them. In places where you cant install a smart switch module beside them as they are right next to the frame.

wintry hazel
#

actually, I'm the only person in my family with an interest in venison. I'm looking to experiment with home grown veg and uhhhh self-obtained deer to make recipes just to see if I can cook something that contains no supermarket good

#

yeah tom, I have them in 2 spots. one needs it because there's a "built-in" wardrobe stopping me having a normal switch. One is here and makes no sense

glacial knot
#

venison is nice, if prepared well. Boar is pretty interesting as well

wintry hazel
#

I made venison backstrap with a honey mushroom sauce and something I forgot but it was amazing

glacial knot

self-obtained sounds like poaching 😄
I'd just ask one of my friends that goes hunting
But we also have a very good butcher around here, so I wouldn't mind store bought

wintry hazel
#

I go hunting. I have both license and written permissions but some people don't particularly enjoy the idea that people hunt

glacial knot
#

the hunters I know care more about animals than some of the vegetarians that don't eat meat to avoid animal death

wintry hazel
#

shhh the vegan movements don't care

#

basically in aus, deer were introduced and in parts of my state they have such population explosions during drought that between them and kangaroos they could consume enough ground resources to starve out both species'

glacial knot

yea, people don't realize how much of modern hunting is population control
it's fine to disagree with it, but silly to just ignore it

wintry hazel

I just go do and then don't openly point out to rando's

forest edge
#

yea but windows could have done it way easily

subtle pasture
#

We were starting to see fragmentation within Windows 10 that was going to cause problems / confusion, is the thing...

forest edge
#

how so?

subtle pasture
#

There are a number of PCs that can run Windows 10 (the 2015 release version) that cannot run Windows 10 (the current version)

#

So you have PCs getting stuck on various unsupported builds of Windows along the way, as they run into hardware that has aged out

forest edge
#

they release "expansions" for windows, which was the whole idea from the start. the diff being that in the future some of those "expansions" would be pay

subtle pasture
#

That's highly confusing for consumers, because "well, it's Windows 10, isn't it??"

forest edge
#

they could have handled that locally

subtle pasture
#

Your only real option for old hardware that can't run Windows 10 21H1 is to buy an LTSC version

forest edge
#

why even make it windows 11 with that being the case

subtle pasture
#

Then you're still stuck on an old build, but at least you get security updates for 10 years

#

Because Windows 11 makes a new hard cutoff for system requirements

forest edge
#

it's not like changing the number is going to stop people from trying to upgrade on hardware that isn't supported lol

subtle pasture
#

Your computer either runs 11 or it doesn't. There's no ambiguity of "well, it'll run the 2015 version, maybe the 2016 version, but not the 2019 version..."

forest edge
#

you watch, they will do something where win11 runs on older shit

#

they have always done that

subtle pasture
#

Windows 11 already runs on fairly old systems. Skylake (6th gen) CPUs are in the compatibility matrix

#

As long as they support TPM 2.0 and SecureBoot

forest edge
#

saying skylake is old is cringe

#

come on now

subtle pasture
#

Skylake was released along-side Windows 10 in 2015...

#

Skylake's official end-of-life was March 2019

forest edge
#

6 years is not old enough to be considered too old to support

#

anyone who supports that is an asshat

subtle pasture
#

That's because it's not too old to support. In theory, Windows 11 supports most Windows 10 launch hardware

#

Skylake is currently supported by Windows 11, as far as we can tell

#

It's stuff older than Skylake that's questionable

#

Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge don't work at all, as they lack the entire AVX2 instruction set. Haswell and Broadwell might work, since they were the first architectures to support AVX2

#

So you might see CPUs as old as 2013 running Windows 11... maybe...

#

And it's not like Skylake is anything special. Modern intel Atom (Gracemont) CPUs can outperform Skylake CPUs

forest edge

forest edge

hushed basalt
#

There's a reason certain laptops like Lenovo let you set a maximum charge level

#

And Apple etc use your behaviour to predict when you will take your phone off charge in the morning and to only let it reach fully charged then and not sooner

#

With present battery technology and without increasing battery size, you can't get both longer run-time and longer battery life. For maximum run-time, the charger must charge the battery to 100% capacity. This places the battery voltage near the manufacturer's recommended float voltage, which is typically 4.2 V ±1%. Unfortunately, charging and maintaining the battery near these levels shortens battery life. One solution is to select a lower float voltage, which prohibits the battery from achieving 100% charge, although this would require a higher-capacity battery to provide the same run-time.

subtle pasture

#

It's actually rather rare that you can get double your CPU performance with an upgrade, these days

forest edge
#

they are dumping out a new gen every year.. just get a 10th or 11th and cut the price in half lol

subtle pasture
#

This seems more worth-it than any CPU since Skylake

#

Going 10th or 11th doesn't actually drop the price. A 9900k, 10900k, and 11900k all cost roughly the same amount

#

Intel never really drops prices, they just let stock deplete

forest edge

be a neat trick if you could

subtle pasture
#

You'd just have to wait, no real trick there...

forest edge
#

and waiting is the same as getting a 11th gen..

subtle pasture
#

But, again, I wouldn't buy such a new CPU used

#

I wouldn't buy 11th gen used, either

#

I might buy a 6th gen chip used, that seems old enough and cheap enough that it wouldn't suck too hard if it fried

forest edge
#

well it's good to know people like you exsist that pay top dollar for brand spanking new stuff lol

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Again, I'm currently running a system from 2014 as far as the motherboard and CPU are concerned...

#

Top dollar every once in a while vs. bottom-dollar constantly 🤷‍♀️

forest edge
#

stop.. 7 years going on 8 is a joke.. I would still be rocking my bloomfield as a daily driver if I hadn't gotten this prebuilt with a 3070 for a steal lol

subtle pasture
#

Not a joke at all when performance has literally doubled in that time

#

Again, performance doubling just... doesn't happen very often anymore. That's a cool thing.

forest edge
#

yea like ram.. use half and the other half sits unused lol

subtle pasture
#

Superfetch keeps my RAM used when I'm not using it 🤷‍♀️

#

And I regularly use more than 16gb of RAM, anyway. Currently sitting at 12GB, and I don't even have AutoCAD open

forest edge
#

I love giving you shit, I don't actually care you want to buy a brand new cpu lol

#

i will say for someone who spent a long time complaining about phone prices, you wanting to drop a ton on a new cpu is kind of funny

subtle pasture
#

You tried to tell me to get an older one because it might save me a few dollars on an $900 rebuild. lol

subtle pasture
#

Like, I'm literally looking at getting a new CPU and motherboard, maybe even DDR5 RAM, and it's not as expensive as that phone I was looking at...

#

Phone prices are insane right now

#

There's also the fact that a desktop PC tends to have a significantly longer lifesplan than a smartphone, so...

#

it's waaaay easier for me to swallow spending $900 on an overhaul of my desktop PC than $1500 on a smartphone that'll stop getting updates in ~2 years

fathom sparrow
#

What smartphones are you looking at that are 1500? I just got an iPhone 12 for 1k, no special deals

deft pewter
#

Some are getting ridiculous. The new folding ones are a good example.

#

I have no idea why flip phones are making a comeback though. We all found out what a terrible idea they were last time.

forest edge
#

well that's because they are relying on the suckers willing to spend to fiance the progress in folding phones

#

wait, when were flip phones bad?

deft pewter
#

Around the same time that having a mechanical hinge meant the cables fell to pieces.

#

They were some of the least reliable phones of their time.

forest edge
#

don't remember that

deft pewter
#

Then you were one of the lucky few 🤷‍♂️

#

I know material technologies have progressed a lot since then... but I still wouldn't trust something to bend thousands of times without giving up

forest edge
#

I mean I don't remember it being an issue when they were around

#

transition away from flip phones was more of just easier for bigger touch screens

#

well they are bending glass, i wouldn't rely on that either

deft pewter
#

Plastic, but yeah... even the most flexible plastics will eventually fail.

forest edge
#

plastic? what phones you talking about. the samsung shit is glass

deft pewter
#

Maybe some models use glass. Most don't, since it's a stupid choice of material for the purpose.

forest edge
#

it's still technically glass,

#

but yea it's shit for folding

deft pewter
#

It's not glass if it's not made from melting silica into a transparent pane 🤯

#

Plastics are polymers.

forest edge
#

it's some mixture using polymer

#

but it's still glass

deft pewter
#

That's not how glass works...

forest edge
#

don't ask me i am not a engineer just remember all the crap that's been released about since the first one took a shit

deft pewter
#

You remember their marketing materials. Since when have they ever been known to be truthful?

forest edge
#

i think there is a video from corning on it in fact

deft pewter
#

Companies will say anything to sell their product.

#

Oh, Corning... marketing materials again.

subtle pasture
#

And I'm not sure why you're laughing at 7 years. That's a long time for computer hardware...

forest edge
#

no it's not

subtle pasture
#

Yes it is...

#

Performance has more than doubled in that time

forest edge
#

maybe to you millennials it is

deft pewter
#

Our brains are still quick enough to notice the difference. 😉

subtle pasture
#

lol, you have it backwards man

#

7 years used to mean EVEN MORE for computers than it does now

deft pewter
#

Yeah, Moore's law doesn't hold anymore 😢

subtle pasture
#

If anyone should have respect for how much can change in 7 years, it's older people who were around for the dawn of home computing

subtle pasture
#

That's why I'm sitting here so gobsmacked that I can upgrade and double my per-core performance. That used to happen all the time, now it's almost unheard of...

deft pewter
#

So the only phone that has a layer of 'glass' is still easily scratched and might as well just be plastic. Gotcha,

forest edge
#

That used to happen all the time, now it's almost unheard of.. this right here lol

#

spoiled

subtle pasture
#

Exactly, so you should understand exactly why 7 years is a huge time-frame for computers

#

Yeah, you were spoiled

#

We don't get upgrades like that, at that pace, anymore

#

I'm happy to actually see it again, at all

forest edge
#

advancements were not as quick back then as they are today lol

subtle pasture
#

Computer power doubled regularly back then...

#

That doesn't happen at the same pace anymore, not even close

forest edge
#

and even at that they were minuscule

subtle pasture
#

Which is what mono's "moores law is dead" comment was about

deft pewter
#

The advancements we see now aren't in raw power. They're in how computers are being used.

forest edge
#

efficiency

subtle pasture
#

Pretty much, though certain things still only get faster when raw power improves

#

There are still tasks that can't be efficiently threaded, unfortunately

forest edge
#

but we didn't pay the same price for an upgrade as you so wanted to argue about

#

costs just kept climbing

subtle pasture
#

Costs have actually gone down if you factor-in inflation

forest edge
#

yea we don't

subtle pasture
#

The number looks bigger, but the buying power of those dollars is way weaker now

forest edge
#

inflation is a joke

deft pewter
#

Inflation is real, whether you like it or not. It's disingenuous to ignore it.

forest edge
#

yea tell that to all those still making the same wage 20+ years later

deft pewter
#

It sucks for them. That doesn't mean it's not real.

subtle pasture
#

I will, they're getting fucked by the system

deft pewter
#

If wages don't keep up with inflation, they're poorer now than before. That doesn't mean inflation isn't real either.

#

If I ever get a year where my annual raise isn't over inflation, I'll switch jobs. Anything else is a pay cut.

forest edge
#

it actually just balances it, instead of the prices going up even more, wages just keep being pushed back

#

laff

deft pewter
#

Balances it? Prices rise, their pay doesn't. They're poorer now than before.

forest edge
#

yea but if wages went up, the jump in prices would too

deft pewter
#

If they could buy 20 hamburgers with their wage before and can now only afford 10 hamburgers, how the fuck is that balancing anything?

forest edge
#

is what I was joking about

subtle pasture
forest edge
#

omfg it was a joke

subtle pasture
#

Which is why minimum wage increases don't crash the economy

forest edge
#

forest edge

forest edge
#

Fact of the matter is, technology seemed fast to us then but compared to today it was crawling. we paid more for incremental improvements vs your "double performance"

#

and of course it would be cheaper today, as everything that improves in mass manufacturing does

subtle pasture
#

And I argue improvements happened faster then than they do now

Yeah, apparently physics is getting in the way 😄

deft pewter

subtle pasture
#

I owned a pentium processor. What's your point?

forest edge
#

I cannot find anything that gives prices on shit that old in stages

#

shit came out in minuscule steps yet the prices were the same as comparing one gen to another (obviously not the places you shop)

subtle pasture
#

First PC I purchased for myself ran a 486, oddly enough

forest edge
#

and it was used

#

and because you owned a 486 you witnessed the birth?

subtle pasture

I dunno man, going from a Motorola 68000 to a 486 was pretty amazing back in the day

forest edge

forest edge
#

bottom line leapo, if you are trying to suggest that tech was cheaper and advanced faster then then now, you are wrong. I don't care what any article or blog says. might have been different for those in eu but here nope

subtle pasture
#

I said tech was more expensive (that's when inflation came up in the conversation), and that it advanced more quickly

forest edge
#

you know what advanced more quickly

#

manufacturing

subtle pasture
#

That said, you effectively saying "I don't care what evidence you have" basically shuts down all further discussion

#

that is not belittling

You told me you didn't care what I brought to the table, because any evidence was insufficient vs. being there. That's not a debate at that point, that's basically just putting your fingers in your ears.

I'm fine to end it there, though. There's no point in discussing it further.

forest edge
#

your evidence was owning two used machines and commenting on the speed difference. so yea, my bottom line was my ending statement

subtle pasture
#

That was not all of the evidence, and you assumed they were used

#

and I did not comment on the speed difference between the two machines I owned/purchased myself at any point

#

I commented on the speed difference between a Motorola 68000 and a 486. Those CPUs came out 10 years apart, and the 486 is, quite literally (going by MIPS) 10 times faster

#

I just had to wait almost 8 years for 2x faster

I still sound-proof my PCs, but I'm a silence freak 👀

Yeah, you could either print that in TPU, or print a mold and cast it in silicone

#

Then pop it onto the existing stick

#

Just make sure you get stiff enough silicone. There's a huuuuge range, with some being almost too soft to handle

Hi, I've created my first home assistant plugin. It's a HA/SIP gateway which allows to call a phone number in an automation and interact with HA through dial tones. I use it to get a call on my home phone if the door bell rings and then can open the door from the phone itself. It's based on pjsip2 and written in python. Currently I only tested it with my fritz.box so I don't know how compatible it is to other SIP providers. You can find it here: https://github.com/arnonym/ha-plugins

@deft pewterit really just depends on the suite or softwares you're using

i'd likely go to #cisco on libera chat for cisco help than try and find a cisco specific discord

Hello everyone
I'm new to Home Assistant and trying to plan a setup for the new apartment I'm moving into in a couple of weeks and need a sanity check (regarding AC solution). What would be the right channel to elaborate my question? I didn't see a general one.

#

are there lots of HVAC questions here?

in here - hopefully not. that's why I ask where to put them 😉

#

you're moving into a multi dwelling residence? what kind of AC do you have? window shaker? ptac? ductless split?

just AC

how do you intend getting signal to/from each head? wireless?

midnight adder

#

#

sorry about that

clever mortar
#

Well, it's fine, but you've posted a few long chains of thought

low harness
#

If you're not asking for support, starting a new discussion about a mystery wire is fine.

#

And slightly intriag... fascinating

clever mortar
#

Though, given that there's channels with folks who mess with hardware/wiring, you're more likely to find help/guidance/ideas there

low harness
#

Some day I'll learn to spell that word.

clever mortar
#

Personally I'm good with injecting 240V into mystery wires to see what catches fire

low harness
#

That's a well known technique. Works great for high voltage power cables.

clever mortar
#

Works even better for low voltage cables - you get more smoke

midnight adder
#

i'll give it a try, thanks for the help

low harness
#

... this is exactly we we advice against asking for advice here... 😉

clever mortar
#

Also, electrical standards vary across the planet 😄

#

What's a great idea for 110V may be a bad idea for 240V, or the other way around

#

||we'll just pretend homes have no low voltage wiring||

low harness
#

And neither is probably a good idea for thermostat control wiring.

clever mortar
#

Probably, I'm sure there's one out there that behaves otherwise 😄

low harness
#

If it's a transformer near the main panel, could it be for a door bell, btw?

clever mortar
#

Here transformers are typically in the doorbell unit

low harness
#

That's a normal thing in Sweden at least

clever mortar
#

Unless they're really old, where they'll be somewhere on the wall

low harness
#

Especially if you have more than one door bell they're usually on a special low voltage AC circuit so all buttons ring the same bell.

clever mortar
#

Multiple doorbells would be unusual here

midnight adder
#

idk. they have a vista20p alarm board down here but no keypads

#

none of the wires are labelled

#

there's about 15 strands of cat5
