It's been all rorted, so well connected people own the centres or the land and facility, and earn millions in taxpayer subsidies

I was thinking that you have your temperature set very high (it's winter here) 🤦‍♂️ I had a ducted heatpump installed for the whole house. I've been running it 24/7, comfy as. clever mortar

Exactly

deft pewter
#

I get the French council that does the same thing... English is already a bastard langauge.

clever mortar
#

English started that way, and has been "exploring other options" ever since

deft pewter
#

We can't even keep our vowels in line. 🤦‍♂️

#

Requires the ability to read IPA, but this is pretty cool: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Vowel_Shift#Overall_changes

The Great Vowel Shift was a series of changes in the pronunciation of the English language that took place primarily between 1400 and 1700, beginning in southern England and today having influenced effectively all dialects of English. Through this vowel shift, the pronunciation of all Middle English long vowels was changed. Some consonant sounds...

#

Imagine hearing 'bite' pronounced as 'beet' 🤯

#

At least for the Scots, 'out' hasn't changed at all... 'oot' 🤣

clever mortar
#

We're pretty damn thrawn

I think ptomaine was in the explanation somewhere

#

Ghoughpteighbteau

deft pewter

Yeah, that one doesn't work 😂

#

'gh' never sounds like a hard P. The 'bt' at the end is trying to sound like the ending of 'doubt' but again isn't a hard T.

low harness

What about hiccough?

#

And debt.

deft pewter

Hiccough? That's not even a word 😂

#

Hiccup...

#

Who broke English again? 😢

static schooner
#

it's our way of detecting invaders

deft pewter
#

That explains it...

The word hiccup itself was created through imitation. The alternative spelling of hiccough results from the association with the word cough.
Someone decided it's somewhat similar to a cough, so they fucked up the spelling deliberately.

static schooner
#

"read this sentence"

low harness
#

Gh as in hiccough, ough as in though, pt as it ptomaine, eigh as in neigh, bt as in debt, eau as in bureau was the explanation I found.

deft pewter
#

Gh as in hiccough
Again, this one doesn't work.

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but don't forget that in English, and Scots in particular, some letters may be silent, because ... why not

deft pewter
#

Can't take a made up word and use it to prove some alternate phonetics. But that blame sits with someone else, not with you.

young sigil
#

Plants crave electrolytes don't they?

hushed basalt
#

But it's not so much a level you water to

#

As must as a product of the soil makeup

rare condor
#

Potting Mix from Bunnings, from what I have been reading it very much depends, but I am thinking of setting the setpoint to 30%.

#

Also I f*cked my C++ programming, the modbus queue is assigning the wrong tokens and if I enable temp and water readings they get swapped, so I now have more programming to sort out

hushed basalt
#

Basically your soil profile will have a saturation point, and a dry point

#

You'd need to experiment to find that

#

But if it's been raining for a couple of days you can assume the peak is your saturation point

#

You want to irrigate when you're at about 50% of your peak

young sigil
#

It also depends a great deal on the type of plant. e.g. You would not want that sort of watering schedule for a cactus.

And AMD is bringing back 12 and 16 core Threadrippers.

I've been begging for smaller Threadrippers for a while. This finally boots Intel out of the niche that X299 has dominated for years

deft pewter
subtle pasture
#

Right?

#

I was tempted to bite the bullet and build an X299 system on 10th gen intel because AMD just... had nothing in that market segment between standard desktops and workstations.

#

Now, buying a 16 core Threadripper seems pretty compelling. Comes with quad-channel RAM support and 64 PCIe lanes, too

#

only problem ive had with threadripper is the lack of good heatsinks

Yeah, not sure how well my Noctua NH-D15S will do with Threadripper...

Yeah, saw that. It's weird, they only make smaller single-stack heatsinks for Threadripper...

i dont really mind, it‘s been like 12 generations of smartphones now and at this point everyone should have multiple chargers laying around. besides that people mostly want to use fast charging abilities which most phones never included to begin with…

shy comet
#

my other main issue is that google cant decide if their phones should consistently have wireless charging

#

so its not like all of their phones support the same charger when they do that

#

the argument about too many chargers laying around is like saying a smartphone cant last more tahn 2 years when it can

#

its sorta valid but not really

dusky plank
#

sure they can last 2 years. they can also last 10 years. but will it be usable by then? for phone calls and text messaging maybe

#

I can charge both laptops, my Nintendo, my phone and other stuff on the same power brick
And only need USB-C/USB-C, and one stupid (USB-A/)lightning cable, because Apple

#

I'm happy without them throwing another brick in. I bought a couple good ones that support various profiles. And got like 10 cheap ones already from all stupid devices :/

#

I just wish it was an option. Maybe even a free one

shy comet
#

see thats the thing....back in teh day if you spent $1000 on a phone you got a bunch of accessories with it including headphones

#

now marketing tries to make it feel like less is more which is dumb...they just want to save $5 when they can

glacial knot
#

But the next step is going to be from USB to wireless stations
which is probably going to annoy me

shy comet
#

see i dont midn wireless.....plugging in your phone can damage the port especially if the phone drops while being plugged in....which goes back to my point about how not all phones made from google consistently have wireless charging

#

there was at least 1 model that they decided didnt need it while the ones before and after did

glacial knot
#

I don't mind wireless
I'm just not looking forward to wireless only

shy comet

checks every box and then some. the ONLY downside is you will have to get everything to make one work, then clone that to all 29 others lol

tidal bronze
#

Ok let me look into it. As with anything it's always something that was supposed to be deployed 8 days ago 😀 thanks for all the insight, appreciate it much.

forest edge
#

if money is no problem and you don't want to do it, there are tons of people out there willing to do it for a penny

subtle pasture
#

Throwing Tasmota on it will do that

tidal bronze
#

Lol. Zerotier is a must.

dusky plank
#

why?

tidal bronze
#

I wish I could say why

subtle pasture
# dusky plank why?

I'm looking into ZeroTier, and... it looks like you only need one system to run it

#

All your sensors can be ESP modules

#

You don't need ZeroTier running on every module in the swarm

dusky plank
#

mqtt and tls? or yeah, just put them all on a switch and handle the data from there

subtle pasture
#

So one Pi and like 30 ESP modules, and you're golden 😛

tidal bronze
#

They are individual modems and gateways and multiple locations. ZT running at individual locations.

forest edge
#

why you gotta complicate this shit

tidal bronze
#

My life is complicated by default. So gotta pay it forward

subtle pasture
#

Can I just say, I'm not seeing the difference between a ZeroTier server and a VPN server...

#

Like, literally everything on their homepage is just describing various VPN configurations

dusky plank
tidal bronze
#

My goal is not to find what's best or what's most technologically savvy way .... 😆 meeting deadlines and getting stuff done with least effort is the goal.

subtle pasture
#

VPN over MQTT? That's... weird... the packet overhead would be atrocious

brisk glen
#

windows 10 or debian 11

#

hard to decide

forest edge
#

Husarnet

dusky plank
#

i imagine the likelihood of a pi failing in these 3 years being quite high… the other boards even higher maybe 😄

forest edge
subtle pasture
#

I'd say the same for a NUC, so... I guess buy some old military spec hardware?

tidal bronze
#

Not expecting not to fail. Looking for least trouble. Oh don't even go there about PIs failing. Lmao

forest edge
#

quad is just being difficult to the point he won't find anything lol

tidal bronze
#

Oh no nothing like that.

brisk glen
#

Pis are fine with proper drives

forest edge
#

esp is still your best bet

tidal bronze
#

Pi is the way to go for this.

forest edge
#

how hot do these areas get?

brisk glen
#

gah, linux or windows for my laptop

subtle pasture
#

For a laptop? Windows...

dusky plank
#

macos

tidal bronze
#

Last recorded temp 141f

forest edge
#

uh

brisk glen
#

windows = 4 more years of support

forest edge
#

yea, no pi

#

you need to make the esp work

brisk glen
#

@dusky plank macos will not run on this 2012 macbook pro

forest edge
#

pi zero may work in those temps

#

but no onboard emmc

brisk glen
#

windows 11 drops support for bios booting and no tpm

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge pi 3 was running there for last 3 years. 😆

subtle pasture
forest edge
#

was it fan cooled?

subtle pasture
#

ATMegas are rated up to 85c

forest edge
#

141F ambient is fucking hot

tidal bronze
#

No mounted to aluminum heat sink. Pretty large box.

#

I never go by specs. That's for kids.

subtle pasture
#

Espressif ESP32 modules are rated to 125c

#

So yeah... they'll survive...

brisk glen
#

sounds like you need to steal the CPUS nasa uses

dusky plank
#

if you go with pi, use pi2 at most.
anything else produces a lot more heat on top of that and pi2 can handle all you need in this case

forest edge
#

isn't there a site where you can hire a programmer to do a job online? there use to be shit like that

tidal bronze
#

Trust me I am not worried about heat

forest edge
#

just pay some dork to do all the programming then slap that on some esp's

dusky plank
#

then make him responsible for fails

tidal bronze
#

Not an option due to **** reasons

forest edge
#

reasons?

#

it isn't anti-slavery

#

you got a dough, they got the need for green.. what more do you want

tidal bronze
#

Can't say it. Lol. Just not possible in the time frame

forest edge
#

your involved with some loan sharks aren't you

#

some dude in a jogging suit and sweat band is holding a gun to your head?

tidal bronze
#

Yep and me squeezing the Vin of a pore pressure transducer with all of my might.

forest edge
#

the only other thing i can think of is try and find you a wholesale of rpi1b's and some cooling fans lol

brisk glen
#

meh, linux and wine it is

dusky plank
#

why not also just attach LTE modules to the esp and ditch the vpn? you said money doesnt matter

tidal bronze
#

I have to piggyback on exiting infrastructure

mental gust
forest edge
#

you said a pi is already doing this job? for the last 3 years?

tidal bronze
#

Doing something else in a different zone.

forest edge
#

but it's running all the stuff you need?

#

all these "requirements" you are throwing about

tidal bronze
#

Hmmm running something else but almost yes. Runs ZT and all that shebang

forest edge
#

and it's running what for storage?

dusky plank
#

this is some dark site and air gapped systems level stuff 😅

tidal bronze
#

Microsd dies every year. But application runs mostly on memory. Some drive activity but minimal.

brisk glen
#

so use a dam external ssd?

#

issue solved?

forest edge
#

at this point, I would just clone that setup and then replace the sdcard with a emmc sd card adpater

dusky plank
#

lol, reminds me of my pi which has been running now for over four years in read-only without trouble 😅

forest edge
#

atleast it will be what you have just with better storage

tidal bronze
#

They are for 2 different things. Running 2 totally different sensor systems.

forest edge
#

check Hard Kernel for the sdcard emmc adapater. they come in diffrent size flavors

dusky plank
forest edge
#

lol

#

till power loss

dusky plank
#

it reboots every day

forest edge
#

hey just do network booting lol

subtle pasture
#

I mean, if you're really serious about running a lot of Pi's long-term... net-boot

tidal bronze
#

Wait for LTE modem ?

forest edge
#

?

tidal bronze
#

Only network is LTE modem

forest edge
#

believe it can be done

#

all these on the same network or does each connect to a diffrent modem?

tidal bronze
#

Different modem

forest edge
#

30 diffrent lte modems?

tidal bronze
#

Some areas LTE sucks

#

Yes.

forest edge
#

you really are trying to make this a pain lol

#

just go with the emmc adapater

tidal bronze
forest edge
#

bulk buy ya some rpi1,2,3,3B

dusky plank
#

at this point I‘d just buy some tp link mini router (maybe they have some with SIM now too), put openwrt on them and use the serial port or usb on them for the esps

forest edge
#

at this point I would tell whoever you are doing this for to find someone else to deal with it

#

the esp is the hand down better long term solution for this project. using pi's is throwing away money and creating more e-waste lol

tidal bronze
#

What's e-waste ?

forest edge
#

what people call the shit you grow tired of after 2 years lol

tidal bronze
#

Oh now I get it.

#

I never understand how come there's shitty internet coverage in the middle of the country.

forest edge
#

"Johnson I need you to row boat up river 2 miles, climb the tallest tree you find, pluck an eagles egg, climb down the run back here with it... but before you go we need to tie your left arm behind your back and cast your feet in concrete.... and make it snappy"

tidal bronze
#

What smoke are you talking about? Crystal clear skies over KC. Just made up BS huh 🤔

forest edge
#

you talking about the smoke your state is spreading over the US?

#

I haven't looked lately to see if that is still happening

tidal bronze
#

Nothing to double check I can see clearly

forest edge
#

more interested in this geko or whatever is that is taking refuge in my garage since I decided to automate my garage ac unit lol

#

you flying over KC now? lemme grab my high power green laser

tidal bronze
#

Lol. Yep in the vicinity

#

Why not red ?

#

Honestly there's a thin layer of smoke. 🙄

#

You telling me all this is from west coast ?

forest edge
#

green blinds the pilots better

#

yea all of it

tidal bronze
#

Oops. Sorry.

forest edge
#

not just here, it reaches the east coast lol

#

your the only person in denial.. try watching the news

tidal bronze
#

If you can't see it, then it's not true right ? I don't see it, usually.

forest edge
#

so you don't believe air exsists?

#

i'll come fart in your face and you can tell me that since you don't see shit, it can't possibly be true

tidal bronze
#

You got some good selection of restaurants

forest edge
#

wait, your on the ground here?

#

there are some real gems around KC

#

if you are here you gotta try Joe's BBQ

#

just be weary of inner city people. people that live within KC limits are pretty delusional and bias

tidal bronze
#

No just did a Google maps search.

#

I will very soon through drop by just for food.

#

How about Eddie V's Prime Seafood

#

You mean Joe's KC bar B que right ?

forest edge
#

yea

#

there is only one Joe's.. two locations but only one place called Joe's

tidal bronze
#

3 locations. 4700 reviews and 4.7 🌟 right on 👍

#

Added to my to visit list.

forest edge
#

oh i guess another was added then lol

#

they actually do a deal with the Minsky's pizza places around here so every so often Minksys will have joe's bbq pizza

#

that is some omg good shit lol

tidal bronze
#

Will stop by next month time permitting. Damn so many good ones. I pick places on food nothing else.

#

You give me shit about plant stuff what about "Kind Food" WTH?

forest edge
#

if you like the upper class stuff McCormick & Schmick's on the plaza should be right up your ally

#

it's all fancy and stuff lol

#

use to be a place called the melting pot down there too that was neat. was all fondue style

#

not sure if that is still there or not

tidal bronze
#

The Tree Hugger Truck? Really GTS?

forest edge
#

there is a tree hugger truck?

#

I don't go into the city much so couldn't tell you anything about the food trucks

tidal bronze
#

I mean really?

forest edge
#

does it serve cali food?

#

i have been telling you i been seeing more and more cali plates here.. maybe someone started a new food truck lmao

tidal bronze
forest edge
#

looks like one of your people have moved here to try and start a food truck lmao

tidal bronze
forest edge
#

at least now you know when you get here you need to go tell them hello lol

tidal bronze
#

So all above from cali?

forest edge
#

how did you come to that conclusion

#

EAT FUD looks like a good candidate rotf

tidal bronze
#

canihaveabite only in KC 🤣

forest edge
#

I am sure there are some decent food trucks but you'll be too busy going to the actual places in buildings to have time for food trucks lol

#

KC and the surrounding area have more food options then just about anywhere. NY is the only place that beats us

#

hell just in my little area of the world there more food places then I have been able to eat at lol

#

and people wonder why amercians get fat

tidal bronze
#

More food places the better. Never enough.

forest edge
#

I think quality goes down with more

#

you would think more competition would strive to force better quality but I think all it does it force price drops and the inherit problem with low quality

brisk glen
#

flatpaks are amazing

#

Did anyone else tune in to the Facebook live audio group with Linus Tech Tips, The Hook Up and Snazzy Labs?

forest edge
#

dear God no, why would anyone subject themselves willingly to that?

golden isle
#

Hello,
Is it worth to use 2 *2 to hard drives(raid 0) as normal storage or better to go SSD ?

deft pewter
#

Yes

golden isle
#

Yes for first choice or second ? X)

#

Or both are more or less the same thing ?

deft pewter
#

They're totally different... and you haven't given any information about how they'll be used 🤷‍♂️

#

Boot drive for a personal PC? SSD. Media store? HDD's.

golden isle
#

I mean, normal storage, as for pictures videos etc (replacing my hard drive ) and keeping an nvme for gaming

Yhea pc, my bad

deft pewter
#

Personally, I wouldn't even bother with RAID. Just get a massive HDD and back things up to S3/Backblaze.

golden isle
#

Ah ?
I've got a personal server to store and backup my data, just thinking of what what would have the best price to speed ratio ... Or just eat the bullet and go for 2 TB nvme
