FunFact:

Raccoon in swedish directly translate to "washing" (as in washing clothes & other [washable] items) "bear". Not as in "im washing the bear", but as "the washing bear is washing (something)"

Wanted Raccoon is a story about a raccoon that lived a peaceful life in the forest until one day people invaded it. They cut down the trees and built their own houses instead. Animals families were taken away from them and all those who couldnt hide were placed in animal shelters. Our Raccoon met the same fate. Help the raccoon get free, find ...

#

So much of IT is that

deft pewter
#

I saw some interesting tweets lately on the topic. Some tech bro claiming that anyone that has to use Google or SO should be fired because they're not 'real developers'... and thousands of people telling him to piss off 😂

clever mortar
#

I mean, knowing how to solve new problems matters, but if somebody else has already solved the tricky problem of designing how a bearing works, why would you want to design one from first principles?

deft pewter
#

Taking it one step further, even if I'm given a working bearing, having the knowledge to combine that with other parts to make something useful is also important. I can't remember basic stuff some days but I know how to cobble it all together.

green inlet
#

This is just not an IT/Dev thing....this is really across the board. Why would anyone try to recreate the wheel. Time better spent improving what has already been done if it is a possibility

deft pewter
#

I ended up not hating them as much as I thought I would... but coding questions in interviews are ridiculous. 'Write a function that gives the value of a factorial'... why? If I was going to do maths in an application, I'd use a maths library...

Bunnings - but unfortunately my freezer is holding all the stock I could find in seqld

#

Turns out if one store has a ridiculously good price on clearance stock, if another store has the same item on clearance they'll often (but not always) match it

wintry hazel
#

I’m in Western Sydney; but I’m changing everything to downlights so idk what that does for me

daring cloak
#

If it helps I found one with gu10 bulbs for 2.99

#

Feel free to use that to help your journey :)

#

Lumens were low, only 300 or so on the gu10 thus I figured that was maybe why so cheap

wintry hazel
#

I’m using their Arlec 90mm led downlight 5 packs that come with plug bases, and my switches are Clipsal iconic.
I’m thinking I order the iconic BLE push buttons but I would have liked to find one as a test before buying heaps…

daring cloak
#

Ahh, I've got a few downlights with plugs and I've just got them hanging off smart switches actually, but mine are just basic LED ones

#

My previous setup was arlec kits I got on clearance for 19 for 2 bulb 2 switch - tasmota flashable

wintry hazel
#

Like I’m pretty sure Clipsal uses zigbee for them but imagine not knowing how to use them without buying a full wider setup…

#

Yeah your downlight setup would be similar to mine

daring cloak
#

It works pretty well to be honest, I had genuinely expected the switches to fail in summer as they sit very close to my roof tiles (don't do what I did) but yeah

hushed basalt
#

I've made the decision not to use smart bulbs

wintry hazel
#

Hahah yeah no I want the push button functionality in my wall, I just wanted them to also be in HA for voice control

hushed basalt
#

I'm going Shelly's on dimmable standard downlights

daring cloak
#

I was pretty anti smart bulbs - till I found HA and all the stuff to run offline. Tasmota especially

hushed basalt
#

I have a few smart bulbs but I don't like the UX

daring cloak
#

Admittedly the funny part of all this is I want to replace my light fittings and finding something that takes bloody bulbs is a nightmare

hushed basalt
#

I want a physical switch on the wall that works when the network is down

#

Which shelly can do

#

Only drawback is no rgbcct control

wintry hazel
#

It makes more sense for your general lighting to be pretty standard daylight lights, dimmable if you desire, and save rgb for accent lighting

hushed basalt
#

I find 4000k is the sweet spot for fixed colour

daring cloak
hushed basalt
#

In quality light

hushed basalt
wintry hazel
#

I dunno, I’m in electrical and I more care about life span and that all the colours actually match

daring cloak
#

That's what seemed to be a big draw of more expensive setups - consistency

hushed basalt
#

Colour quality matters

daring cloak
#

The LIFX bulbs blew my mind vs my cheap CCT ones tbh

hushed basalt
#

You can get very decent quality lights in standard dimmable ones

#

Like $10-$15 downlights vs $80 Hue equivalents

#

Then add in the fact a smart switch can control say 8 downlights in a room

wintry hazel
#

Yeah SAL tricolour ones are nice enough for me. Arlec ain’t bad funny enough

hushed basalt
#

I was looking at LEDVancw

#

Although I'm considering something recessed

daring cloak
#

I enjoy the hunt for cheap stuff, my whole smart home setup in terms of gear is probably <150aud at most

wintry hazel
#

I love recessed.

#

I’m tall so hate anything hanging below the ceiling

hushed basalt
#

It just annoys me all the recessed stuff I've seen is exposed emitters

#

So if you're lying under the light it actually becomes much worse

#

I've got 70 downlights to replace too

#

So rgbcct or even cct just isn't viable

wintry hazel
#

70?

hushed basalt
#

Yes

wintry hazel
#

How big is your place, jeez

hushed basalt
#

It's not hard in a 4bedroom home

#

There's 4 in one bedroom for example

#

Nearly 20 in the kitchen/living space

wintry hazel
#

My kitchen has 3, two bedrooms worth 4, living room joins to dining and I’m unsure how I will design that because it’s a weird space

hushed basalt
#

When I replace them with IC rated downlights and fill in the insulation

wintry hazel
#

And the office is too small for 4 because the lux might actually get too high

hushed basalt
#

Between the air sealing and the insulation coverage it'll make so much of a difference

wintry hazel
#

Yeah that part will

hushed basalt
#

They're all crappy magnetic ballasts atm

#

And the previous owners have put crappy non dimmable LEDs in the dimmable circuits

wintry hazel
#

Just check the documentation. Apparently sometimes the light can be covered but there’s a minimum distance between the light and its transformer to cover them

hushed basalt
#

So not only can they not dim, they're below the minimum load of the ballast and they're trash quality light

#

All the downlights ive seen are integrated ballast

#

The ones I'm looking at at least

wintry hazel
#

Ah

hushed basalt
#
#

I need to go to the wholesaler and see what they have available

#

But wholesalers treat non electricians like trash so that part turns me off

wintry hazel
#

What wholesaler?

hushed basalt
#

L&H have been pretty shitty

wintry hazel
#

Oh we don’t even have an account there as a pretty big electrical company

hushed basalt
#

I'm not sure who's good in Perth

wintry hazel
#

Turks or TLE might treat you better; but yeah by law non-electricians aren’t meant to do electrical work so they can’t expect to sell you much

hushed basalt
#

My friend is an EE so he'll be doing the work for me

#

But I'm also a licensed cabler

#

So i still need to go to them for heaps of stuff I am licensed to use

wintry hazel
#

Do you have a vaguely work-looking shirt? TLE has no hesitation with me

hushed basalt
#

I haven't practiced in 10 years but I can probably fashion something up

#

Is tle MM?

wintry hazel
#

Mm?

daring cloak
#

70 - bloody hell!

hushed basalt
#

MM electrical

daring cloak
#

i dunno if you can have dimmable LED lights with em, but I've got my downlights converted to a plug which is handy as, also means as non sparkies we can legally change em around

hushed basalt
#

Yeah that's my plan

#

And getting shelly dimmers on the switch

daring cloak
#

sweet, sounds awesome (and expensive)

#

i looked into downlights at my place but honestly my plastering is really poor quality, and downlights really highlight it 😄

hushed basalt
#

Shelly's are about 35/switch

#

The downlights are about $12 each

#

Way cheaper than any zigbee bulb alternative

#

Plus the compromise of the insulation is costing me way more than that

daring cloak
#

seems logical yeah, so if i understand you've got one switch lighting a number of downlights (e.g. 4 in a room) - and you then use the shelly as a smart dimmer/switch?

#

(hunting for ideas for my next place in case i need to change at scale :D)

hushed basalt
#

I also want to support shelly since they're very open and honest

#

Local api. Headers if you want to flash them and no countermeasures

dawn prawn
#

is the community site down?

hushed basalt
#

Tuya rebadged stuff from bunnings is a cat and mouse game

dawn prawn
#

wait, 25 for the 1L, the 1 was 20

#

and I think 2.5 was 30

#

and buy 10 get 2 free

hushed basalt
#

Dimmers cost more

dawn prawn
#

ah yes they are

#

I've got shellys with hue's

#

best of both worlds

hushed basalt
#

Are you just using the shelly as a switch sensor

wintry hazel
#

Did you guys need to research the type of dimming for the lights and get the appropriate leading edge/trailing edge or does that just tend to work out with those products?

I’ve been to a couple of callouts because people’s dimmable LEDs still flash when dimmed and had to get the appropriate matching product codes to make sure that happens less

daring cloak
#

got a heap of bulbs in my study that didn't flash lol

#

though discovering localtuya has been a godsend

dawn prawn

daring cloak

i bought some smart bulbs, i think it was maybe brilliant, that had the newer tuya firmware

#

mirabella ones now seem to too

#

i bought some vtac ones from costco - definitely esp/tuya based but also updated unfortunately

hushed basalt
#

Ive made the decision to not try to hack stuff that doesn't want to be hacked

#

I don't have the time nor interest

daring cloak
#

can't argue with that

That's actually quite well done. One of the first memes I've seen where the font actually matches.

Crypto in general is fucking retarded. The only people that want to see it continue are those that are already invested. They want to prop up a ridiculous, energy-wasting pyramid scheme despite all the problems it's going to cause.

Was just reading the other day that proof of space crypto like Chia is expected to create SSD shortages. 🙄

I suppose that's slightly better than climate change... but it's still annoying that these miners take up resources that have better uses.

Compared to the lowest pricing from last week, 18TB and 16TB hard drives have increased by up to 66.7% and 60.6%, respectively.
HDD prices always go down steadily... until now.

If anyone was ever curious about Barack Obama's music tastes: https://twitter.com/BarackObama/status/1413848757083545601?s=20

With so many folks getting together with family and friends, there’s a lot to celebrate this summer. Here’s a playlist of songs I’ve been listening to lately—it's a mix of old and new, household names and emerging artists, and a whole lot in between.
