Nothing, but you lose some functionality ๐... well more like, most
Yeah, so they gimp the hardware if you don't share your data with them.
I'll admit that I'm probably more in the 'pay once, own forever' camp but I'd rather pay a subscription for a cloud service than not pay and be the product.
Yea, but I came from a "consumer" tplink network, so its a reaaalllyy big improvement
You dont pay for unifi cloud tho
You pay a premium for their products ๐ฅฒ
I thought the light-colored one was a cat at first. I didn't realize they had such a color range
Their acting range is brilliant too.
What you don't see is the bag of trash she's holding in her other hand to keep them interested... ๐
Yes
Amazing
Another question. How high?
Omg it won't load :/
Now it worked
I was the one humping the legs
Spinning is too complicated

well, it does fall over at the end. so a qualified success
come to think of it, I might fall over if I spun around like that
raccoons, they're just like us!
I would really like to associate with "trash panda"
The garage needed some cooling, and I happen to have a few of these old server fans laying around
im usually the one who takes the cake for jank setups.
but man... thats a good one
Mains exposed โ
Cabling everywere โ
Industrial looking supply โ
are those blowymatrons?
Me coming back to Typescript after 6 weeks in Python land
https://c.tenor.com/CowGNQSUsOYAAAAM/confused-math.gif
old server fans, so technically ๐คฃ
no earth โ
the supply looks like my innitial rgb strip setup i did a few weeks back
12v 20A psu
thing shorted & died (manufacturer defect)
aha, ah not so good
Redid, shorted again, same shitry defect
ordered from diff seller
its sitting pretty in my room waiting for an install
although im actually pretty happy with the faliures. Iv managed to up the safety on each install
conformal coating on strip solder joints, resin on supply terminals, massive seperation between leads.. etc.
lol. i want to use rgb strips, but the tape never sticks
75W is still grotesk lol
is that a good thing?
it'll do the job. But the sound...
could pdm them with 180โฐ seperation. Would partially cancel out
how so
Would sound trippy though as it would create an interference pattern
Hard to explain. Here take a look at this:
yeah electroboom did a video on it
@lucid bison no modifications? That supply is a streight up fire hazard
What mods?
tied down cabling, added ground, hidden supply & fuses
It has a 13A fuse
I'm gonna get a 240v 18inch fan with shutters thru the wall,
Fair enough
Hopefully
If it's getting hot you're best putting tje ventilation at the top
Esp & mqtt or smart plug?
I need to find a temp sensore that can work with ha,so that once the room temp is past a certain threshold it turns on the fan
@lucid bison
Or anything with esphome
There's an exhaust at the top, thru the ducting, and the 2 intake fans at the bottom
Got a link, and does it need a hub?
Also hardwired?
grabbing rn
Cool
Yea hardwired
I'd put the fan on the ducting on the top
It is
And just leave vents for the doors
It sucks hot air from outside and ducts outside
Digital, controller on senaor itself with power & data lines going to eap. No resistive "find the coefficient of x" crap
It's only temporary untill I knock holes thru walls into the side ally
Who da wha wha?
some sensors are analog & you need to take the wire resistence going to the thing into account
you're taking the outside air and pushing it back outside?
I mean it's taking hot air from the top of the room, and ducts outside thru door
generic sensor i picked up after 5 mins of looking around on the esphome compatibility thing
it works about as good as any generic sensor
I got no clue how to wire it ip
its dead easy. Three pins.
I tried to use an Arduino to make a temp sensor with a screen, blew the damn thing up
Got a link for the xaomi sensor?
Two Power and one data. Power goes to 3.3V and ground and data to any of the data (Dx) pins
Yeah but how to network
you flash eaphome onto the... well... ESP 8266/32 (go figure) and copy paste 10 lines of "code" (yaml)
google: "esphome tempsensor inurl:youtube"
Too advanced for my pea brain, I'll buy ready made ๐
if you managed to wire that fire hazard up without flat lining...
This will be childs play
order it & il walk you through the entire thing step by step. Shits like 12$. Nothing to lose
Don't worry, I think I did a couple times
Can it be wired network?
il have to look at that
haha. Brave or foolish, not sure
that'll work lol. Does it strictly need to be wired? Is wifi not available?
I prefer wired as WiFi is dog shite
I only use WiFi for devices like tablets, and mobiles etc
Everything else is wired
if 2.4 Ghz wifi's available, use that. Trust me ESP's only require like 10 Kbps and barely use any resources
Hows it powered? Have been trying to find poe ones cause it's all in garage
Uk
you got a socket within 5m of were the temp sensor's gonna be located?
the ESP takes micro USB
Ah
so any crappy 5W usb adapter and cable will do
I'll wire something up
can be as low as 2W
do it howevers best. All thats needed is bog standard 5V over micro USB
Ah, NEMA connectors
there ya go. Prob solved
I'll have a look at how it works and I'll decide
U got a link for the xaomi one too?
Anything 12v is easiest
I can use the PSU for the fans
got amazon prime?
Yep
Never said anything about a xiaomi one. Must've been some other guy
but browse around a bit looking for esp compatible sensors
Oops, you got a link pet?
Does ZigBee need a hub?
My home assistant runs on a server
Kinda overpowered for what it is doing rn
I did my first Linux command that worked first time today
was it "ls"?
No lol
or rm -rf /
never used zigbee crap. Hubs Seems redundant & bulky to me
It was sudo systemctl stop firewalld
I stick to standard stuff
Someone told me to do that once, I did it and oh boi, I could've punched them through the screen

ELDER IM LOOKING AT A CONNECTION FAILED LOOP AND I AM BORED
Actually.. didnt check shipping crap so make sure you dont overpay
Oh, wrong chat
Thanks pet I'll have a looksies
Also, you thought the fans wiring was bad, you should see the mains wiring
๐ฌ
240v from breaker comes into a 10A fuse, thru to a 63A 3phase switch then to the NEMA socket
I like da big clunk
It's extremely straight
What do you use the 3 phase for?
You've got home assistant setup correct? @lucid bison
I don't, single phase in, split to 3 outputs
oh boy, we'll have to set that up aswell.
Ig you should go for that xiaomi thing
Easier
At the moment all ha does is report a couple servers usage, lets me controle the two smart sockets, see how many players are on my MC server, see the weather and soon, cameras
The android app is shite
Ah, so you do have it...
ok than thats fine
I didn't understand the question that's all
Lol
Lmao
Ha has 16 cores and 72gb ram
The CCTV pc has 4cores, 8gb ram, 500gb boot and 4tb hdd for recording
Oh and it monitors my printers
I'm gonna spend some money on wifi light switches, sockets, door locks and cameras
I'm tempted to somehow make an alarm system
As when we had building work they never installed the burglar alarm
So we haven't had one for like 5yrs
Is there an alarm co trol panel that will work with my keypad and motion sensors, but also work with ha over network
So that I can also disarm using ha
Or using AI with the cameras
๐ shaping up to be a funny HA disaster story
<and we never heard from them again>
Disaster indeed
Where's the disaster part
You cut holes in your doors for server fans ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ when you wake up after the meth wears off, let us know.
I mean, the fans are temporary, but the airflow is much better than the bathroom fan I used to have, and atleast it stops the room getting to 43ยฐc
That's my motto,
If it works it works
And if it works, don't touch it
Because it will likely break, or you will get a shock
That's the general rule in the server room for me
what in code violation did I miss?
With me, many, fire codes, electrical codes, etc
@tidal bronze 124 F in death valley.. you feeling like an egg on the hood of a car yet?
I think he's east cost this week and next
For storage. When it comes to public reads, thatโs where the money starts brrrr-ing. However, thereโs always a solution and that solution is a Cloudfront distribution proxying cached copies at next to no cost.
Do an amazon.com and use fastly ๐คฃ

I'm sure it has something it does well, other than harvest more data for Facebook...
Yes, it makes people unhappy because they start compare themselves to influencers
There's always going to be people who're better at something, have more X, etc. But if you compare somebody's strengths against your weaknesses you're in for a sad life
Even if I compare other people's weaknesses against my weaknesses, I feel sad ๐
But yeah, the only person you should compare yourself to is who you were yesterday.
(I know, you're not used to me being so deep...)
Since yesterday... I've increased my uptime
(I've probably also increased my waistline, but hey)
Since yesterday, I've had more interview practise and feel less nervous ๐
I hate talking to strangers.
Yeah. I get that one
I'm not even nervous about the interview-specific bits. I can describe what I do and sell myself well. I just don't like people.
My problem has always been that my achievements are just ... things I've done. "Clearly" none of it was special, so I never shout about my achievements.
Yeah, it's easy to perceive everything as just normal.
I remember a chat with somebody I used to work with, and look up to, and was blown away when they said they looked up to me, because of all the things I had done, and could do
One day I'll believe in myself
It's all just a matter of perspective. I keep telling my junior dev that he shouldn't compare himself against what he sees from the more experienced devs. He sees the end result. He doesn't see all the failures we made along the way (and still do).
He doesn't see me bashing my head off my desk when I get stuck on something ๐
Back in a bit... next interview ๐
Yeah. I had a chat like that with somebody years ago... You only don't see my mistakes since I usually catch them first
Good luck...
He doesn't see me bashing my head off my desk when I get stuck on something
SO MUCH THIS.
I had to teach a junior dev yesterday why inserting the word 'null' to a DB was bad. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
That's a developer's mantra right there ๐
In norway an need an g10 cpu? Weirdly probably wrong priced price drop of i9-10900x for just 250usd https://prisguiden.no/produkt/intel-core-i9-10900x-402158
The worst I've done was drop a table on our QA environment but even that was pretty embarrassing since a lot of our internal stakeholders test their integrations against it.
I once dropped an entire prod DB. It was also while our backup server was offline for 4 days because another IT staff member forgot to check that the tape jukebox actually had tapes in it. That was... fun... ish. lol
Is just cutting off internet for cloud-abled IoT devices as safe as putting them into a vlan?
in practice
Not as safe but probably enough
Clever device developers could rotate the MAC though
Clever device developers could rotate the MAC though
haven't seen my devices do that i think
If you are very lucky you grab one of those devices that just donโt have a proper one and regenerate it on boot
But I think those donโt get CE certified
CE's got nothing to do with the protocol stuff, surely? It's about physical safety.
I know it got some EMC compliance stuff. Having a proper mac is very basic copmliance for wifi. Though I'm unsure if that's tested
CE marking is an administrative marking with which the manufacturer or importer affirms its conformity with European health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA).
I'll admit that I don't know what is tested, but that description suggests they don't give a damn about the software/firmware side.
The only devices I've seen do this are iPhones, tbh...
But yeah, best bet is to place IoT devices in their own VLAN, and route only the traffic you need
iOS doesn't randomize it on connect though iirc. Only one per network
That hasn't been my experience trying to track why my girlfriend's iPhone is on the wifi. It still occasionally rotates its MAC address for no apparent reason.
do you rotate your BSSIDs?
Had to turn off the "Private WiFi Addresses" feature for our SSID on that phone to get it to stop
it's been stable on mine so far
Good luck ๐คทโโ๏ธ
All I know is hers would be fine for a few days/weeks, then suddenly change.
The only thing that fixed it was explicitly telling it not to mask its MAC address on our network
The other annoyance with iPhones is that they don't send beacons very often when they're not actively in use, so they tend to appear "offline" for 15 to 30 minutes at a time
how do they manage that while keeping push messages viable?
I've seen 5-ish when I had the simple ping method from openhab active
Haven't tried anything more reliable yet
Because the 4G radio is always listening
really? Does it route all the push over 4G?
No, but the carrier can ALWAYS get the device to leave deep sleep by pinging it over the cell network
so it'd get pinged to wake up, then re-associate with wifi?
Ideally
Or you just deal with delayed notifications
That's what Android does in deep sleep. It literally only gets pushes on set time intervals
outside discord being a derp, most notifications come in quicker than some of the web interfaces refresh o.0
Or when you physically move the phone, because it keeps the gyro and prox sensors alive
It's worth mentioning that modern phones are context-aware, and adjust their sleep intervals based on their current sensor readings
A phone being carried in a pants pocket will wake more often than a phone sitting face-down on a table for hours.
It's literally more responsive when you're paying attention to it
it's usually face up on my couch
Android does that too these days, random MAC every time you connect
thankfully you can turn that off
Yup
I got tired of seeing "random" devices on my network
When did they start doing that? I'm on Android 10 and my MAC is fixed
Ages before that, but you may need stock
I put up with the big, scary warning so that it's easier for me to keep track of what/who is on my network
I don't even have the option to enable MAC randomization on this phone. lol
Yeah, saw that. Doesn't exist on this phone
Manufacturer's do weird stuff
There's no gear icon next to the currently-connected SSID
Long-pressing a connection brings up a context menu where I can access advanced settings, but MAC randomization isn't one of them.
Blame your manufacturer for doing what they all do ๐
instructions unclear, LG exits the entire smartphone market
Which is a shame, because LG phones were they only ones I liked...
I have no idea what I'll get when/if this LG v35 dies.
Heh, I'd a couple of LG made Nexus phones... the ones where LG screwed up the hardware
After the second one I'd never touch LG again
Oh, yeah, I have an LG G3 that died the same way (it was ostensibly the same exact hardware as the LG nexus phones, in a different shell, so yeah..."
Strictly speaking, that wasn't LGs fault. A ton of electronics from that era failed due to the lead-free solder changeover
Yeah, but they handled the warranty part ... poorly
On the Nexus side of things, Google handled the warranty replacements
Yeah, that bit did work, if slowly
I got a nice replacement that died 3 months later ๐
I upgraded from the G3 to a G6, then to a v35
Nothing wrong with the G6, still works, it's just old now ๐
I believe that the last LG phone I had was on android 4.4 or something like this
I'd go back to Nokia if they'd hurry up and release a phone better/faster than the v35... Even the new Nokia 8.3 5G (released 2020) has a slower SoC than the v35 (released 2018)
Hah, and the Nokia 9 has exactly the same SoC as the v35...
Maybe they'll have something that's an actual upgrade in another year...
Motorola has exactly one phone that's faster than the v35, and it's a $999 Verizon exclusive...
At this rate I'm going to wind up with an LG v60 because it's one of the few reasonable options out there ๐
your idea of reasonable is a little messed up lol
...it's unreasonable to expect to find a phone faster than a 3-year-old phone for under $999?
I'd be happy with a Pixel... but with how rarely I leave the house now, a new cell phone doesn't seem important.
because that's a pretty reasonable thing to expect after 3 years, I'd think...
when you limit yourself to the bargain bin.. yea
How exactly am I limiting myself to the bargain bin? lol
Bargain bin? I'm with Leapo on this... a grand is a LOT to spend on a phone and not get your money's worth.
I'm over here looking at $999 phones, because they're the only upgrades that are actual upgrades...
I upgraded my OG Pixel XL to a Pixel 4a simply because the battery life in the XL was down to about 20 minutes
For whatever reason, the Snapdragon 845 is still being used in brand new phones, 3 years later... none of which are real upgrades from a v35. Anything with a Snapdragon 865 or 888 is absurdly expensive.
Quite fast enough, and capable enough, for me. I don't need a pocket laptop, I need a smart phone ๐
Pixel 4a also uses a slower SoC (snapdragon 730G), and would be a massive downgrade >_>
can always buy used as well...
I can't say I've ever found a phone to be too slow, but maybe I'm not the target audience for requiring constant go faster stripes on my phone
Honestly, the only phones I can find with a Snapdragon 865, below $999, are the Samsung Galaxy S20, and the LG v60
Acutally, my original Nexus wasn't fast... and I did notice the upgrade from that
why does it have to be the 865?
I'd take an 888 as well...
Anything with an 845 or lower is a side-grade or downgrade...
my current phone already has an 845 ๐
If you're wanting speed demons, you get to pay lots for them
I paid $179 for this phone, outright <_<
back in 2018?
In 2019
if you google 845 vs 765G you'll see speed wise they are very similar but you get all the extra perks with the newer 765G
It's just... really weird to see EXACTLY the same Snapdragon 845 SoC, still being used in brand new phones, 3 years later...
so wouldn't go as fas as saying it's a downgrade
I did also say "or side-grade"
wouldn't really go that far either. it's like comparing newer intel chips to last gen
Uh, I'm looking at benchmarks now. The 845 wipes the floor with the 765 in AnTuTu and 3DMark...
The only thing the 765 has going for it is integrated 5G, and potentially better battery life
WTF do you do with your phone where that stuff matters?
Is it your gaming platform too?
I just don't think I should drop $400+ on something that's a side-grade...
Especially when the original device only cost $179
I wouldn't go based off those lol
honestly i don't think the pixel 4 or 5 is worth a shit anyways, maybe 6 will be better
so i agree you should hold off
but you do need to ditch lg lol
Like I said, I'd like to go back to Nokia, but their fastest phone is... still using an 845. lol
because those companies are not the big hitters anymore
hell look at the oneplus line which is now secondary to whatever that weird ass name of the company who bought them
and oneplus use to be really good
you can find plenty of phones for well under a grand that will be an upgrade to yours. there is more to phones than just the chip lol
I already mentioned the two I could find: Samsung Galaxy S20 and the LG v60
So, yes, you're right
They're between $400 and $700, depending on carrier/unlocked/used status
both those companies have taken a turn towards shitzville imo
I mean, LG doesn't even make phones anymore, and I've never wanted a Samsung phone
LG has almost always been a turd tho
Like, ever. Samsung's phones simply do not appeal to me.
aside from a very brief period
Apparently I got in at the right time on LG, because this phone has been a dream ๐คทโโ๏ธ
The only Samsung phone I've ever owned was a Samsung Focus, and that was a Windows Phone 7 handset.
So Microsoft prevented Samsung from junking it up
Microsoft had the right idea when they basically told OEMs "Every phone is going to run the same OS. Period. No modifications"
And then there was no differentiation and it died
Unfortunately Google can't exercise that level of control over Android
@static schooner The lack of differentiation between handsets had nothing to do with the plug being pulled
In fact, I'd consider the consistency across OEMs to be one of their bigger strengths
Apple does the same thing
It's just that Apple doesn't allow any other OEM to produce phones running iOS, but if they did, they'd absolutely enforce the same OS consistency that Microsoft did on Windows phones
Google is making an attempt with their Android One program, where participating handsets will be consistent
But they can't really stop OEMs from modifying android, given how it's open source
Though it might not represent the latest Samsung Android concepts, I'm not too fond of my Samsung Note 10
plus, seems they nerfed screen casting; probably because it competes with their DeX concept
I'll be going back to some form of Android One handset the next time I switch
I ditched my Note10 for my iPhone11. I love a lot of the features of the Note series, but it just feels like everything that made the Note, well, THE Note, is being erased in every new version of it.
@forest edge it's death valley supposed to be hot.
I couldn't imagine being/living in Death Valley... and this is coming from someone who spent 10+ years in Phoenix.
I've been using that as my Teams background lately, even in job interviews. Gets a chuckle from anyone that recognises it ๐
@forest edge 4 hours left to LA. I will let you know for sure. But trust me IT'S Always FINE ๐
@tidal bronzelet us know if looking out the window at the wing looks something like the space shuttle re-entry
yuk it's 100F outside right now in the shade
Hence why no one should ever go to Missouri. ๐
@tidal bronzetry going inland alittle more and your shit sky rockets lol
So now you want me to go looking for 100f weather. You are something else. All this time I was thinking you were in your flip flops, running your fingers through your hair in 71f weather sipping on some gin and juice. What a let down.
You should stop talking about others people's climate issues until you solve your 100f problems. ๐คฃ
why
this coming from someone enjoying his 80F while his state is ablaze
@tidal bronzesome day that ocean won't be keeping your temps down.. mark my words!
apart from screen casting nerf; I'm always caught in the crosshairs of some "optimization" efforts.
Apps I don't use often, but need to work WHEN I need them are constantly having their data purged.
Other things too, just a general feel of me having to react to silly stuff
how weird, i don't have anything that could even purge data on my s10
must be a new shitty "maintenance" app
what's the purpose of casting btw?
screen i assume
On stock Android you can cast anything to Chromecast through the Google Home app at the very least
On my old Pixel 2 XL I could set up screen casting, fire up a game, connect a Game Controller and live the good life
gaming on phone.. gross
worked well for snes/gba emulators and such
anywayz, it's not like I do that 24/7/365 but no longer having the option gets noticed.
It's 109 here right now...
"Sunny"
no shit...
@tidal bronze you should stop causing all these air rages https://youtu.be/bL8cQgUgqAg
An unruly passenger subdued after running amok is the latest in an epidemic of terrifying incidents in the sky. Stephon Duncan, an off-duty flight attendant, was restrained by other passengers after he allegedly tried to open a door in mid-air. The captain was heard on video asking over the intercom for โall strong malesโ to come to the front of...
lol modesto.. why does that name sound familiar with something funny
I have seen my share ๐ now numb to all in-flight drama.
Few days ago read 2 guys being removed for fighting for arm rest space. More interesting shit to come with post pandemic travel.
isn't it literally impossible to open the plane door from inside while in flight?
It's George Lucas', Jeremy Renner, and Scott Peterson's hometown
You might recognize a few of those names
Famous director, famous actor, famous murderer >.>
Yep. You can't.
should just let him keep beating on it until he tires out ๐
Wtf... Scott Peterson is actually in the new again, right now...
There's some timing for ya'
Dude has been in prison since 2004
nah there is something along the lines of the same line used for Hoboken NJ in Dude where is my car https://youtu.be/OcNKRnha7Rs I'll remember it it evenetually
Oh, Modesto was mentioned in Monsters vs. Aliens
It's the city that gets destroyed when the aliens crash-land on earth...
maybe that's it lol
Taken from Monsters vs Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space (2009)
This is also the movie where Steven Colbert plays The President of the United States
if I had to walk past you in first class or business to reach coach seating i'd probably knock the laptop off your tray table too lol
or eat a whole lot of beans before boarding
Hah, both Dude, Where's My Car? and Monsters vs. Aliens involve a giant woman.
it probably was that movie I was thinking of
Plus masks no beans issues.
Eh, not bad.
Oh nice. @forest edge see that's livable temp๐
how do i run as root in terminal? of normal linux terminal
thats over 50% humidity tho.. it's 90F here with humidity in the 30's
it's like 60% humidty where you are lol
That dry heat huh ๐คฃ
Wrong password? Wringer username in the db?
The root denied access here isnโt the os user. But some kind of user in your database
did you define the pw for the db?
little did he know that was a compactor trash truck
NOoooooooooooooo
It's inside
Ooof, time to move to the arctic
25C inside right now. But the outside is starting to be hotter than in :/
And outside
Ooooooof
Shithouse here but I kinda like it
let's see atx's -5
With a heatwave of 17 mid week
And Norwegians will be heading to Svalbard to take a summer midnight skinny dip in the ocean
Soylent Green is raccoons?
Perhaps :P
Greetings everyone
Hi All, I've just joined the discord community after hanging around on the various fora for a while absorbing all the info I could from the very talented and kind contibutors to the HA website. With the info I've gathered I've been able to set up HA supervised running on a VM on my Synology NAS. It seems to be working well but I am getting numerous and regular errors from one of my entities (Chromecast built into a Sony TV) but I'm comforted by some research that I've done that it's not a huge problem, it's just clogging the log. I've ordered a Conbee 2 stick and installing that will be my next task! I think that I've found myself an absorbing hobby with useful outputs. I'm encouraged by the wonderful support given by the community and I just wanted to say a big thank you to all who have contributed guidance and support for others. Thank you
How far off are we 3d printing living things?
I think it might be my only chance to get a real raccoon pet
Haven't there already been advances in 3D printing organs?
But raccoons tho? :P
I know printing an entire organism is harder but that's a massive first step. I'd guess the nervous system will be the challenge, especially if you want a functioning brain.
But if we're only talking raccoons, we can skip that step.
If anyone ever discovers a raccoon that big, it'd better star in the next Godzilla movie.
I would hate to see how much poo it makes
Anyone running flume?
Wooo. Now I want to go back to Disneyworld.
Disney ๐ซ
What's wrong with it?
Everything unless you have a speed pass
Disability pass ๐ฏ
Wife qualifies, so we've always had the fast passes at all the parks.
Lucky now that makes it worthwhile
They're pretty good with non-visible disabilities. Father in law was given a pass when we went with them. He'd recently had a hip replacement and couldn't stand for too long at once.
One in CA I like but one FL with the humidity, even with a pass, no thank you.
I don't mind it. We've been in June and October. That's as hot and humid as I'd be comfortable with.
Would never go there in the height of summer.
Went in April for like 5 days and I called quits after 1 day, the one in FL. Lol
I struggled a bit last time but I'd put on a lot of weight. Shifting it all again now, so at least I won't look like a native next time.
The Anaheim, CA one is nice weather wise throughout the year.
Yeah but I don't want to die in a wildfire.
No wildfires there. Ever.
Ducks?
Wonder if the movies being based on them was anything to do with having a Disney park there too.
No idea.
Yeah, directly related:
The club was founded in 1993 by The Walt Disney Company as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, a name based on the 1992 film The Mighty Ducks.
Not based on them. They were created for the movie.
That's gotta be pretty unique. Can't be many world-famous sports teams that were just magicked up for a movie.
there's world famous hokey teams?
Sure. Some of them even rhyme... like the Canucks ๐
Just don't ask me to name any more... that's about the extent of my hockey knowledge.
Hockey and F1 are the only sports I really follow
Soon 30ยฐc inside
30c inside ?
We mostly don't do air conditioning in Europe. I can't remember where Underknowledge is from though
That's what I gathered from my travels but anything above 24c inside is ๐
My office is going above 30C for a week now
I'll honestly consider one of these portable/single-room AC thingies
32 here
pretty comfy imo. But others are sweltering
I swet and swear
You should see my garage / server room temps, been up to like 58ยฐc in there, now sits around 33ยฐc with the fans
You're not running a nation's internet from in there like someone else we know, are you?
that's the temperature where I slowly get nervous
58 degrees
what were your clocks at? 250 Mhz?
thing what would intresst me, whats hosted on there ?
58 degrees cant be good for hard drives
well, not to wild, seen worse
Im assuming the drives are warmer than the room temperature though
for sure
58 C is 5 - 8 degrees hotter than the minimum max surviviable post acclimation temp for humans.
Talk about custom HAMR drives!

My 2-year-old daughter's favorite stuffed animal, "Meow-Meow," is a critical service in my house, so I run a highly available three-node Meow-Meow cluster.
Here's how it works:

Well that's no fun.

Darn, thatโs why i had no side effects except being extra annoying
Would be nice as a backup tbh
Does anyone know what's the beef between HACS and SmartIR devs
i saw a bunch of issues where people asked it to be added to HACS default repos with the issues just closes without proper explanation, only saying "it's for certain reasons"
That's the exact response they gave you?
not to me but to another person
no, but i don't think i misinterpreted
Well, thatโs curious
and in this one the issue was closed without a proper explanation too, even after ludeeus implemented (from what i see) the feature the lead dev said HACS was lacking
https://github.com/smartHomeHub/SmartIR/issues/142
No idea then. Can't see any hints of hostility.
Open source can be great... but people often have different opinions on how things should be done.
It seems smartir wants to be able to update itself. Hacs does not allow that without erroring out. The change mentioned there was to remove the requirement for github Releases, and instead let users update to the latest commit to github.
So it seems to be a question about opt-out automatic updates... Nope. It's not automatic updates
Could just be a misunderstanding if that's the full reason. Version checking has been in hacs for a long time now.
Here's something I've been wondering for the past few days (as I spend more time in r/selfhosted)
For those of you who use docker-compose, do you use one docker-compose.yml file for all your programs, or use multiple files and start them independently?
I've seen arguments for both methods, and I can't really get a grasp for which method is more commonly used
Put related stuff in one. Or just everything in one.
There's not much of a reason to split everything.
If you're starting them independently, why even use an orchestration tool? ๐คฏ
This seems to be the explantion: https://github.com/smartHomeHub/SmartIR/issues/181 SmartIR stores persistent data in custom_components rather than .storage for some reason, and HACS wipes that before upgrading.
@low harness this says that HACS fixed it
You're right. This seems to have been about support for hacs installation at all. Then I have no idea.
Thinking maybe geothermal, and then a wood burning stove for food and heating water as backup (power problem). Solar with batteries, and a backup generator to charge batteries if something went wrong, or bypass completwly
And own well, and waste
I realise it sounds a little apocalypsey though. That is my goal. Off grid.
packed out the mobile AC again
I hope i ll be able to sleep tonight
I hate summer
Move further North and it'll be fine
Just come back to the UK where it's always winter.
Can anyone recommend some RGBW bulbs that don't flicker at <30% brightness? I'm sick of buying bulbs and sending them back due to flickering. UK if possible.
Is this a #hardware-archived question?
Well yes, but i thought that section was for HA hardware, like raspberry pi and PC/linux etc.
Maybe we need a "related -> devices" section?
that's what #hardware-archived is
ok, i'll repost there.
This is the 'nothing to do with HA' section.
it'll be back to the "All Raccoon Channel" soon enough
Is this gif trying to claim it's not a loop
Anyone have any recommendations for a selhosted dashboard?
I'm trying to choose between homer and heimdall
Respecting that everyone has their tastes, from what I can gather I'm just as well off with my "Smart Home" bookmark folder in my web browser
For the stuff I feel should be easily accessible within HA, I use https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/panel_iframe/ to get at them from the sidebar
Claudette is such a crappy name for a storm lol
Sounds like a no-nonsense lady to me
Good afternoon, everyone...fresh meat checking in lol
would love to move further north -_- but for now stuck in the city
The problem with wood burning is it's extremely extremely polluting
Crazy amounts of byproducts and PM2.5 pollution. Should be completely banned in metro areas.
Appcalypse cabins are one thing but
Ah! "For reasons" is the best reason ๐
with the exception of some types of electric by the time you factor in the pollutants created by the process of making the energy/fuel it pretty much balances right back out to be just as bad if not worse than conventional wood burning lol
No way not even remotely true
you should look up what the pollutants are from creating like natural gas and coal power plants lol
Yes there's absolutely a lot of pollutants
But domestic wood heaters are way worse
There's plenty of studies if you want me to find some for you after work
Plus heat pumps can be sourced by clean energy sources. Wood heaters can't be clean no matter what.
can't cook food with a heat pump
I mean, you could, it would just take a REALLY long time ๐
heh
well those studies are more designed to make someone feel good about buying a product rather than being accurate in comparing one thing to another. too many variables to really compare anyways so noway they could ever bring in the full picture anyways
You cook with electric
Mmmm, maybe with backup generator it is a bit extravagent
Lots of people still do it as main heat source in Sweden
makes sense. in the middle of nowhere, often take swims in freezing ice water and don't shave your legs.. it all adds up lol
Sounds like raccoon food
I wouldn't like that, if i ever had a wood burning stove it damn well better be big enough to accept logs and sticks lol
I finally got a script that disables reply mentions :)
No more pings for mono and Tinkerer haha
It is just compressed sawdust. Quite ok energy levels per kg and dirt cheap.
Can also be pulled from a container with a screw (it loads itself)
How cold does it get there
He nothing beats air sourced heat pumps but it doesn't get below 5 degrees most winter nights
what do you connect with it? in general you can ask this in #general-archived
Basically I've HA running in docker and I'm going to run MQTT in docker but I'm not sure how difficult this is
Like to connect the two together, I imagine not too difficult
You'll be running an MQTT broker in a container. You 'connect' the two together via the MQTT protocol (which is pretty similar to how browsers use HTTP to access websites).
There are plenty of resources on the internet on how MQTT works.
Yeah, so I run the broker in a container and connect to it via the intergration in HA which sounds simple enough. Found this guide which looks like it will be what I need to do https://hometechhacker.com/mqtt-using-docker-and-home-assistant/
did you read the channel topic yet?
I see Kindle Fire HD 10 2021 version on sale for $79 in US on Prime Day. Anyone have experience using those as a HA display or rooting them?
#frontend-archived would be better able to advise I'm sure
Does anyone have a good guide to installing Ubuntu server on a Mac computer?
Ive only been able to find ones for normal Ubuntu, and I'm not sure how much the process will differ
Especially since half of the tutorial is gui stuff
you donยดt need to root them, just install the google play store on it and remove the ad, and there you go a normal android tablet
Assume they're the same until you find something that differs ๐ No-one has all the answers, we just figure it out as we go along.
Thanks mono ๐ I'll probably have some issue and ask about it later, in that case
startet playing around with https://ivre.rocks - Now I got around 30 sheets of paper in the printer with strings lie Random1Random2Random3Random4
thanks nmap -_-
I have seen - 27C here
Thankfully it's never got that cold before
Got down to about -18C or so this winter, which was ... nippy enough
5 degrees Celsius? That's still t-shirt weather.
5C is, but below -5 you need longer sleeves
Last time we went to Barcelona was a December... it was funny seeing all the locals in their winter jackets while I was wearing jeans and t-shirts ๐
I think it was still around 10... no idea why they need a jacket on.
must be Canadian ๐
ah, missed the part where it was raining... ๐
I'm from California so I love when it rains, but I reckon you guys are sick of it
I fled that pit after brexit hooha
I'm lucky. It rarely rains where I am. I'm east of the Pennines, so we're well sheltered.
It's not the biggest mountain range in the world but geography means I live in a dry-ish area. The UK has a southwesterly prevailing wind and all the moisture that's carried by winds off the Atlantic gets dumped by the time it gets here ๐
Are you a fan of the rain?
Like in general
If I'm running and it's hot out, a bit of rain is nice. Otherwise no.
For running it's nice, but it freaks me out when I'm biking lol
The problem with UK rain is that it is endless. Unlike some other countries, for example Lund Sweden is similar lat to birmingham, has similar amount of rain, twice as much sun. Pisses down and get's it over with. Uk will have the same amount of rain spread over 2 weeks in light drizzle
Jhb South Africa has rain literally every afternoon in summer. But it's like the heaviest down pore ever and over in 15 minutes and sun resumes.
Light drizzle is the best kind.
i installed a ac today, summer is significantly more pleasant now ๐
I don't want to be soaked through if I'm unlucky enough to be caught outside in a downpour. 15 minutes of light drizzle is fine - you dry off in no time.
for running maybe. or ruining a BBQ, birthday party, wedding, etc... ๐
15 minute of heavy rain you know will be over soon? Just wait it out....
you cant wait out british rain
I'm from Switzerland, and (at least where I lived) the rain was very pleasant. It usually only lasted for a few days (at most)
chรผchichaschtli
Bless you
I'm in Swederland now ๐
its switzer german for kitchen cupboard ๐
haha
Is that near Norwegia?
Makes sense. It's where you keep your shashlik.
Where in Switzerland are you?
Full addresses only, please.
Is is true that IKEA is Swedish for 'meatballs'?
I think it's just an acronym
It stands for Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunaryd
But the adverts said it's Swedish for meatballs ๐ข
Wait they did?
I'm never going to believe the adverts again.
What???
That is really funny
Apparently IKEA meatballs are actually Turkish ๐
Yeah meatballs is kjรถttbullar in swedish so far from IKEA
Cut balls? ๐ฎ
You never know ๐
it's a literal translation Kรถtt = meat bullar = balls (no j)
the รถ is kinda like halfway between u and oo in english.
Are you also a Britain to Sweden defector?
There are dozens of you.,
The smart ones
i know from experience

euro chatter
I really don't understand how any other currency can be considered fungible
if it can't keep the rain off your head, what good is it really?
This is why our new plastic money is brilliant.
Just glue a bunch together until you have a waterproof poncho.
whoa mono's cat!
How could he be so careless with his monocle? It'll get scratched.

Cross the border to Norway and it's kjรธttboller, good times
you donโt even need to cross borders here to hear incromprehensible languages
i live for more than 30 yrs here and still cannot understand some in the valleys
been in berlin for 2 years, i really really appreciate hochdeutsch, sounds so much more professional than the austrian dialects
Well, don't sell the regional and Austrian dialects short; that's how brexit happens
true, canโt live without itโฆ its basically how we make fun of germans ๐
i see so many star trek memesโฆ something happened? never watched it
Not plugged in to the memeosphere, so couldn't really tell you about current trends
somehow every time i see a video of bigclivedotcom on youtube I think "hmmm this guy could totally be Tinkerer"
all great artists have an alter ego
Does anyone know how to get to the boot menu on a mac with a windows keyboard
holding alt didnt work for me
speaking of one national treasure. Photonic is back!!!!!
And he hasn't changed one bit
Well now Iโm testing out an eero 6 pro and holy shit
I might dump UniFi and keep this and just order another for my parents
The UniFi cameras have a better connectionโฆ.
that eero stuff is on sale for prime day
some of them have built in zigbee hubs which is kind of interesting
The pro 6 is not on sale due to chip shortages
And yes it has a zigbee hub and hardware for thread once they get the software ready for it
Bluetooth 5 as well
Software defined radios are the icing on the cake
So wifi uplinks are faster than hardwired unifi ๐ค
except hes now carrying ๐ถ๐ป
Best prime deal ever
audio nerd
But itโs flexibler and robuster
@forest edge hmmm take another look or two ๐คฃ
My phone really fought me on that
optical cable but 24k gold plated jacket for better conduction, yep truly a PRIME deal
if it's not gold it obviously dosen't mean quality right
It reflects the laser better
I wonder if thatโs a stock โwaveform comparisonโ image
I've just discovered something very unexpected. If you turn your PI hosting HA using a zigbee power outlet, you can't turn it back on without plugging the pi elsewhere...
I shouldn't do home automation in the morning (honestly don't remember last time I was awake this early)

Good practice to have a kill switch, though I fear cutting the power isn't enough
the oem power cord for the rpi should come with a toggle switch embedded imo. never really cared for yanking the cord
They don't include that because they don't recommend cutting power like that
You're supposed to do a safe shutdown from inside the OS
Switch it off at the outlet
Or make a switch for the Pi itself
Using GPIO
Or don't use a PI
It is a learning computer for children after all
They have their uses for some small projects... but they're in an awkward spot between an NUC and an ESP.
#330990055533576204 can advise. No HA support in this channel.
Thanks
yea for those wonderful times you can actually do that lol
You locking it up so hard you can't perform a shutdown?
On a Pi, not that hard
all kinds of things can cause you to have to yank the cord lol
It's also entirely possible on other hosts ๐
I don't see what it being a pi has to do with locking it up. Overclocking it?
I've hard locked large server setups more than once. It's simply harder to do with more resources.
it's a prject board so adding a switch to the cord makes sense regardless what is "recommended"
You can also just hit the reset pin on the SoC. The first thing I always do is wire up power/reset buttons...
yea.. yanking the cord is easier
You were just complaining that yanking the cord was harder than flipping a switch
Now pushing a button is hard? lol
having to add said button before hand... uh yea..
It's a Pi, the entire point is DiY...
Thus use the dedicated reset pins...
then include the buttons presoldered
Why? They'd go to waste on a ton of builds
adding a switch to a power cord is a not a waste or expensive lol
You can get a kit from Canakit that includes a switched USB cable with your Pi, if you really want.
But I wouldn't ๐คทโโ๏ธ
like i said
It is when you'd never use it...
wish it was included oem
Yeah, they won't do that, because they specifically advise against using those cables ๐คทโโ๏ธ
everyone who has really ever tinkered with a pi has had to yank the cord atleast once
anyone who says they haven't never did shit with a pi lol
well you like doing stuff the hard way.. that's you
My kill switch was going to be more along the lines of dropping the pi in a vat of acid, so the fuzz can't get to it right away
@cedar chasm Thermite will destroy it faster ๐
Nois
Thermite has more collateral damage risk though
The only safe choice is to nuke it from orbit
Go up a bit, black hole it to be really sure
Yeah but I don't have the gravity nor energy to create one of those
Not to be that guy, but that'll have to be some serious precision nuking to cause less collateral damage than thermite.
Well, nobody nearby will complain if you nuke it
Only if you're casual
Raccoons can be pretty destructive
๐ฆ
In case of fuzz pull emergency raccoon lever..
I like it
The prototype looks very promising
Can hide your crystals as well
https://c.tenor.com/QoZXN_0uRskAAAAM/raccoon-disappear.gif
May i ask what the obsession with raccoon's is all about?
No idea what you mean.
must be me
๐ฆ
This always makes me so sad :(
You know what they say: If you meet a raccoon once in a day, you met a raccoon. If you meet raccoons all day , you're the raccoon.
what if I meet senior management all day? o.0
Peter principle is being prepared
Only works for raccoons and assholes.
So, senior management...
Aha. I was trying to describe that to someone before and forgot the name. Thanks.
Anyone have any ideas on how to use an extra pi 4? I migrated to my mac mini, and now I have a decent server sitting around...
Mine runs my DHCP service
Oh, that's a good idea
Pi's make pretty decent paperweights.
And if you have a proper server... run the DHCP on there ๐
Look, for smaller stuff they work good enough, and they're so small that I can stick them in other places in my house
PiHole/AdGuard home?
Don't get me wrong, I have a Pi... I just don't use it for much ๐
Look it's so cute โค๏ธ
Attach a large USB hard disk and make it your backup server, assuming you don't have one already
I'm using cloud storage for my backups, but I guess I could attach a ssd and move it off site :)
I have two pi's in 19" 1U mountplate, for teh lulz
If you're doing anything where you want something small and inconspicuous, use an ESP. If you're doing something that needs a real computer, use an NUC/server.
to get some mileage out of it, it's my dhcp service
I'm running this on my main server, do you think it would be better on the pi?
but mostly it's just fun
If it's already on the main server, keep it there.
Don't put critical stuff (like your networking) on a kid's toy.
Unless you like fun and games, like meeeeeeeee
Local backups are a great addition to cloud backups
Makes for way faster recovery times
I guess I could always backup both places
Multiple backups are good
So you suggest keeping the pi at home and backing up to it? I was thinking of moving it to my friend's house
Well, one at home with local backups, one at a friends with remote backups
Cool. I guess I'll just keep it here and use it for backups and smaller dumb projects
Thanks for the help :)
So working on some stuff at home, Trying to determine how much storage an average user uses at home. so question for the group: on average, how much hard drive space do you have on your computer and how much is used?
Pi for backup? Does it have a proper storage port?
USB counts, right?
Many TB, most of it ๐
how many is many @clever mortar
256G in Laptop. 100ish used
Couple TB on pc, like 2ish used
Last I checked, I've got about 20 TB of storage, give or take
now if you guys had a media server to offload video/music to
Plex...
so is that yourplex?
Plex, and other stuff
if so, can you estimate how much isnt plex
We're not talking r/datahoarder levels here, but about half my storage isn't videos
Mostly not video stuff. vm images and data from couple years for me as well
F
so trying to figure out how much to allocate for the end user
yeah
tell me about it
Lots ๐
i guess im a masochist
I do a fair bit of digital photography though
wife and i run a photo/video too
I have 1.5tb on my laptop, using 700gb (I need to clean it off though)
Then I have a 4tb NAS which is about 1/4 full (Mostly photos etc, its a google drive replacement)
And smaller disks on my Mac Mini and pi (250 SSD each)
Why allocate? o.0
Through stuff into pooled systems and quota it if you need a limit
so that is going to be centralized
no i know
but like
allocate
then pool
was my thought
so i know at MAX usage, what can i do
?? Iโm confused.
Or are you planing how much to buy atm?
Kk. Users? Just you, you and partner, kids, leachers?
lets shoot for 4 end users
a few linux distros
mac osx
and windows
and preboot to choose
all files and folders map
Preboot to choose? I donโt quite get that
Do you want virtual machines with multiple OS? Because Iโd do different vms for different OS
You can get by easily with 20G per Linux root.
For windows Iโm unsure. I usually reserve 100G, but I barely use it
Probably similar for Mac
And then just an estimate on data grave requirements
then have user profiles map across os
it needs to be seamless for end user
so thats why no regular vm
Nice. In house AD. Have fun suffering
uip
At least use openldap I guess
What do you intend to run on the end user device?
No. I meant whatโs installed on your Laptop/Thinclient/Whatever
And pulls?
yeah
You still need something that Interfaces with usb/Display and forwards stuff
hmmm well i guess i was about to find that out
lol
im legit booting my laptop to the fresh image atm
lol
Maybe Iโm confused about your Idea of vdi
