how much extra does that cost? ๐Ÿ˜‚

wheat jolt
#

Nothing, but you lose some functionality ๐Ÿ˜‚... well more like, most

deft pewter
#

Yeah, so they gimp the hardware if you don't share your data with them.

#

I'll admit that I'm probably more in the 'pay once, own forever' camp but I'd rather pay a subscription for a cloud service than not pay and be the product.

wheat jolt
#

Yea, but I came from a "consumer" tplink network, so its a reaaalllyy big improvement

#

You dont pay for unifi cloud tho

#

You pay a premium for their products ๐Ÿฅฒ

I'm sure it has something it does well, other than harvest more data for Facebook...

hearty depot
#

Yes, it makes people unhappy because they start compare themselves to influencers

clever mortar
#

There's always going to be people who're better at something, have more X, etc. But if you compare somebody's strengths against your weaknesses you're in for a sad life

deft pewter
#

Even if I compare other people's weaknesses against my weaknesses, I feel sad ๐Ÿ˜‚

But yeah, the only person you should compare yourself to is who you were yesterday.

Yeah. I get that one ablobgrimace

deft pewter

I'm not even nervous about the interview-specific bits. I can describe what I do and sell myself well. I just don't like people.

clever mortar

My problem has always been that my achievements are just ... things I've done. "Clearly" none of it was special, so I never shout about my achievements.

The worst I've done was drop a table on our QA environment but even that was pretty embarrassing since a lot of our internal stakeholders test their integrations against it.

I once dropped an entire prod DB. It was also while our backup server was offline for 4 days because another IT staff member forgot to check that the tape jukebox actually had tapes in it. That was... fun... ish. lol

wooden egret
#

Is just cutting off internet for cloud-abled IoT devices as safe as putting them into a vlan?

#

in practice

hushed basalt
#

Not as safe but probably enough

#

Clever device developers could rotate the MAC though

wooden egret
#

Clever device developers could rotate the MAC though
haven't seen my devices do that i think

glacial knot
#

If you are very lucky you grab one of those devices that just donโ€™t have a proper one and regenerate it on boot

#

But I think those donโ€™t get CE certified

deft pewter
#

CE's got nothing to do with the protocol stuff, surely? It's about physical safety.

glacial knot
#

I know it got some EMC compliance stuff. Having a proper mac is very basic copmliance for wifi. Though I'm unsure if that's tested

deft pewter
#

CE marking is an administrative marking with which the manufacturer or importer affirms its conformity with European health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA).
I'll admit that I don't know what is tested, but that description suggests they don't give a damn about the software/firmware side.

clever mortar
#

Pretty much

#

Will it start a fire is the kind of thing they ask

subtle pasture
#

But yeah, best bet is to place IoT devices in their own VLAN, and route only the traffic you need

glacial knot
#

iOS doesn't randomize it on connect though iirc. Only one per network

subtle pasture
#

That hasn't been my experience trying to track why my girlfriend's iPhone is on the wifi. It still occasionally rotates its MAC address for no apparent reason.

glacial knot
#

do you rotate your BSSIDs?

subtle pasture
#

Had to turn off the "Private WiFi Addresses" feature for our SSID on that phone to get it to stop

glacial knot
#

it's been stable on mine so far

subtle pasture
#

Good luck ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

#

All I know is hers would be fine for a few days/weeks, then suddenly change.

#

The only thing that fixed it was explicitly telling it not to mask its MAC address on our network

#

The other annoyance with iPhones is that they don't send beacons very often when they're not actively in use, so they tend to appear "offline" for 15 to 30 minutes at a time

glacial knot
#

how do they manage that while keeping push messages viable?

#

I've seen 5-ish when I had the simple ping method from openhab active

#

Haven't tried anything more reliable yet

subtle pasture
#

Because the 4G radio is always listening

glacial knot
#

really? Does it route all the push over 4G?

subtle pasture
#

No, but the carrier can ALWAYS get the device to leave deep sleep by pinging it over the cell network

glacial knot
#

so it'd get pinged to wake up, then re-associate with wifi?

subtle pasture
#

Ideally

glacial knot
#

hm

#

I should log how it behaves...

subtle pasture
#

Or you just deal with delayed notifications

#

That's what Android does in deep sleep. It literally only gets pushes on set time intervals

glacial knot
#

outside discord being a derp, most notifications come in quicker than some of the web interfaces refresh o.0

subtle pasture
#

Or when you physically move the phone, because it keeps the gyro and prox sensors alive

#

It's worth mentioning that modern phones are context-aware, and adjust their sleep intervals based on their current sensor readings

#

A phone being carried in a pants pocket will wake more often than a phone sitting face-down on a table for hours.

#

It's literally more responsive when you're paying attention to it

glacial knot
#

it's usually face up on my couch

clever mortar

subtle pasture

I don't even have the option to enable MAC randomization on this phone. lol

clever mortar
#

Certainly on 11 you have to turn it off for each SSID

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, saw that. Doesn't exist on this phone

clever mortar
#

Manufacturer's do weird stuff

subtle pasture
#

There's no gear icon next to the currently-connected SSID

#

Long-pressing a connection brings up a context menu where I can access advanced settings, but MAC randomization isn't one of them.

clever mortar
#

Blame your manufacturer for doing what they all do ๐Ÿ˜›

subtle pasture

Which is a shame, because LG phones were they only ones I liked...

#

I have no idea what I'll get when/if this LG v35 dies.

clever mortar
#

Heh, I'd a couple of LG made Nexus phones... the ones where LG screwed up the hardware

#

After the second one I'd never touch LG again

subtle pasture
#

Oh, yeah, I have an LG G3 that died the same way (it was ostensibly the same exact hardware as the LG nexus phones, in a different shell, so yeah..."

#

Strictly speaking, that wasn't LGs fault. A ton of electronics from that era failed due to the lead-free solder changeover

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but they handled the warranty part ... poorly

subtle pasture
#

On the Nexus side of things, Google handled the warranty replacements

clever mortar
#

Yeah, that bit did work, if slowly

#

I got a nice replacement that died 3 months later ๐Ÿ˜‚

subtle pasture
#

I upgraded from the G3 to a G6, then to a v35

#

Nothing wrong with the G6, still works, it's just old now ๐Ÿ˜›

tender tusk
#

I believe that the last LG phone I had was on android 4.4 or something like this

subtle pasture
#

I'd go back to Nokia if they'd hurry up and release a phone better/faster than the v35... Even the new Nokia 8.3 5G (released 2020) has a slower SoC than the v35 (released 2018)

#

Hah, and the Nokia 9 has exactly the same SoC as the v35...

#

Maybe they'll have something that's an actual upgrade in another year...

#

Motorola has exactly one phone that's faster than the v35, and it's a $999 Verizon exclusive...

#

At this rate I'm going to wind up with an LG v60 because it's one of the few reasonable options out there ๐Ÿ˜‚

forest edge
#

your idea of reasonable is a little messed up lol

subtle pasture
#

...it's unreasonable to expect to find a phone faster than a 3-year-old phone for under $999?

deft pewter
#

I'd be happy with a Pixel... but with how rarely I leave the house now, a new cell phone doesn't seem important.

subtle pasture
#

because that's a pretty reasonable thing to expect after 3 years, I'd think...

forest edge
subtle pasture
#

How exactly am I limiting myself to the bargain bin? lol

deft pewter
#

Bargain bin? I'm with Leapo on this... a grand is a LOT to spend on a phone and not get your money's worth.

subtle pasture
#

I'm over here looking at $999 phones, because they're the only upgrades that are actual upgrades...

clever mortar
#

I upgraded my OG Pixel XL to a Pixel 4a simply because the battery life in the XL was down to about 20 minutes

subtle pasture
#

For whatever reason, the Snapdragon 845 is still being used in brand new phones, 3 years later... none of which are real upgrades from a v35. Anything with a Snapdragon 865 or 888 is absurdly expensive.

clever mortar
#

Quite fast enough, and capable enough, for me. I don't need a pocket laptop, I need a smart phone ๐Ÿ˜›

subtle pasture
#

Pixel 4a also uses a slower SoC (snapdragon 730G), and would be a massive downgrade >_>

forest edge
#

can always buy used as well...

clever mortar
#

I can't say I've ever found a phone to be too slow, but maybe I'm not the target audience for requiring constant go faster stripes on my phone

subtle pasture
#

Honestly, the only phones I can find with a Snapdragon 865, below $999, are the Samsung Galaxy S20, and the LG v60

clever mortar
#

Acutally, my original Nexus wasn't fast... and I did notice the upgrade from that

forest edge
#

why does it have to be the 865?

subtle pasture
#

I'd take an 888 as well...

#

Anything with an 845 or lower is a side-grade or downgrade...

#

my current phone already has an 845 ๐Ÿ˜›

clever mortar
#

If you're wanting speed demons, you get to pay lots for them

subtle pasture
#

I paid $179 for this phone, outright <_<

forest edge
#

back in 2018?

subtle pasture
#

In 2019

forest edge
#

if you google 845 vs 765G you'll see speed wise they are very similar but you get all the extra perks with the newer 765G

subtle pasture
#

It's just... really weird to see EXACTLY the same Snapdragon 845 SoC, still being used in brand new phones, 3 years later...

forest edge
#

so wouldn't go as fas as saying it's a downgrade

subtle pasture
#

I did also say "or side-grade"

forest edge
#

wouldn't really go that far either. it's like comparing newer intel chips to last gen

subtle pasture
#

Uh, I'm looking at benchmarks now. The 845 wipes the floor with the 765 in AnTuTu and 3DMark...

#

The only thing the 765 has going for it is integrated 5G, and potentially better battery life

clever mortar
#

WTF do you do with your phone where that stuff matters?

#

Is it your gaming platform too?

subtle pasture
#

I just don't think I should drop $400+ on something that's a side-grade...

#

Especially when the original device only cost $179

forest edge
#

honestly i don't think the pixel 4 or 5 is worth a shit anyways, maybe 6 will be better

#

so i agree you should hold off

#

but you do need to ditch lg lol

subtle pasture
#

Like I said, I'd like to go back to Nokia, but their fastest phone is... still using an 845. lol

forest edge
#

because those companies are not the big hitters anymore

#

hell look at the oneplus line which is now secondary to whatever that weird ass name of the company who bought them

#

and oneplus use to be really good

subtle pasture

oh wah

subtle pasture
#

Hey, not my fault that everyone else has Qi but them

#

Even Apple has it now. lolz

forest edge
#

you can find plenty of phones for well under a grand that will be an upgrade to yours. there is more to phones than just the chip lol

subtle pasture
#

I already mentioned the two I could find: Samsung Galaxy S20 and the LG v60

#

So, yes, you're right

#

They're between $400 and $700, depending on carrier/unlocked/used status

forest edge
#

both those companies have taken a turn towards shitzville imo

subtle pasture
#

I mean, LG doesn't even make phones anymore, and I've never wanted a Samsung phone

forest edge

LG has almost always been a turd tho

subtle pasture
#

Like, ever. Samsung's phones simply do not appeal to me.

forest edge
#

aside from a very brief period

subtle pasture
#

Apparently I got in at the right time on LG, because this phone has been a dream ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

#

The only Samsung phone I've ever owned was a Samsung Focus, and that was a Windows Phone 7 handset.

#

So Microsoft prevented Samsung from junking it up

#

Microsoft had the right idea when they basically told OEMs "Every phone is going to run the same OS. Period. No modifications"

static schooner
#

And then there was no differentiation and it died

subtle pasture
#

Unfortunately Google can't exercise that level of control over Android

#

@static schooner The lack of differentiation between handsets had nothing to do with the plug being pulled

#

In fact, I'd consider the consistency across OEMs to be one of their bigger strengths

#

Apple does the same thing

#

It's just that Apple doesn't allow any other OEM to produce phones running iOS, but if they did, they'd absolutely enforce the same OS consistency that Microsoft did on Windows phones

#

Google is making an attempt with their Android One program, where participating handsets will be consistent

#

But they can't really stop OEMs from modifying android, given how it's open source

wooden egret
#

@subtle pasture what's wrong with Samsungs

Though it might not represent the latest Samsung Android concepts, I'm not too fond of my Samsung Note 10

Hi All, I've just joined the discord community after hanging around on the various fora for a while absorbing all the info I could from the very talented and kind contibutors to the HA website. With the info I've gathered I've been able to set up HA supervised running on a VM on my Synology NAS. It seems to be working well but I am getting numerous and regular errors from one of my entities (Chromecast built into a Sony TV) but I'm comforted by some research that I've done that it's not a huge problem, it's just clogging the log. I've ordered a Conbee 2 stick and installing that will be my next task! I think that I've found myself an absorbing hobby with useful outputs. I'm encouraged by the wonderful support given by the community and I just wanted to say a big thank you to all who have contributed guidance and support for others. Thank you

Yeah, they won't do that, because they specifically advise against using those cables ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

forest edge

everyone who has really ever tinkered with a pi has had to yank the cord atleast once

#

anyone who says they haven't never did shit with a pi lol

subtle pasture

shorts the reset pin to ground

#

No need to yank the cord even if it hard locks...

forest edge
#

well you like doing stuff the hard way.. that's you

subtle pasture
#

... hitting the dedicated reset button is the hard way?

#

Aight...

cedar chasm
#

My kill switch was going to be more along the lines of dropping the pi in a vat of acid, so the fuzz can't get to it right away

subtle pasture
#

@cedar chasm Thermite will destroy it faster ๐Ÿ‘€

cedar chasm
#

Nois

hushed basalt
#

Thermite has more collateral damage risk though

#

The only safe choice is to nuke it from orbit

clever mortar
#

Go up a bit, black hole it to be really sure

hushed basalt
#

Yeah but I don't have the gravity nor energy to create one of those

low harness

Not to be that guy, but that'll have to be some serious precision nuking to cause less collateral damage than thermite.

Well, nobody nearby will complain if you nuke it

Anyone have any ideas on how to use an extra pi 4? I migrated to my mac mini, and now I have a decent server sitting around...

cedar chasm
#

Mine runs my DHCP service

peak mountain
#

Oh, that's a good idea

deft pewter
#

Pi's make pretty decent paperweights.

#

And if you have a proper server... run the DHCP on there ๐Ÿ˜‰

peak mountain
#

Look, for smaller stuff they work good enough, and they're so small that I can stick them in other places in my house

clever mortar

PiHole/AdGuard home?

deft pewter

Don't get me wrong, I have a Pi... I just don't use it for much ๐Ÿ˜„

clever mortar
#

Attach a large USB hard disk and make it your backup server, assuming you don't have one already

peak mountain
cedar chasm
#

I have two pi's in 19" 1U mountplate, for teh lulz

deft pewter
#

If you're doing anything where you want something small and inconspicuous, use an ESP. If you're doing something that needs a real computer, use an NUC/server.

cedar chasm
#

to get some mileage out of it, it's my dhcp service

peak mountain
cedar chasm
#

but mostly it's just fun

deft pewter
#

If it's already on the main server, keep it there.

#

Don't put critical stuff (like your networking) on a kid's toy.

Unless you like fun and games, like meeeeeeeee

clever mortar
#

Local backups are a great addition to cloud backups

#

Makes for way faster recovery times

peak mountain
#

I guess I could always backup both places

clever mortar
#

Multiple backups are good

peak mountain
#

So you suggest keeping the pi at home and backing up to it? I was thinking of moving it to my friend's house

clever mortar
#

Well, one at home with local backups, one at a friends with remote backups

peak mountain
#

Cool. I guess I'll just keep it here and use it for backups and smaller dumb projects

#

Thanks for the help :)

So working on some stuff at home, Trying to determine how much storage an average user uses at home. so question for the group: on average, how much hard drive space do you have on your computer and how much is used?

glacial knot
#

Pi for backup? Does it have a proper storage port?

deft pewter
#

USB counts, right?

clever mortar
stray coral
#

how many is many @clever mortar

glacial knot
clever mortar
#

Last I checked, I've got about 20 TB of storage, give or take

stray coral
#

now if you guys had a media server to offload video/music to

clever mortar
#

Plex...

stray coral
#

so is that yourplex?

clever mortar
#

Plex, and other stuff

stray coral
#

if so, can you estimate how much isnt plex

clever mortar
#

We're not talking r/datahoarder levels here, but about half my storage isn't videos

glacial knot
#

Mostly not video stuff. vm images and data from couple years for me as well

stray coral
#

got ya

#

going VDI at home

glacial knot
#

F

stray coral
#

so trying to figure out how much to allocate for the end user

#

yeah

#

tell me about it

clever mortar
#

Lots ๐Ÿ˜„

stray coral
#

i guess im a masochist

clever mortar
#

I do a fair bit of digital photography though

stray coral
#

wife and i run a photo/video too

peak mountain
glacial knot
#

Why allocate? o.0
Through stuff into pooled systems and quota it if you need a limit

stray coral
#

so that is going to be centralized

#

no i know

#

but like

#

allocate

#

then pool

#

was my thought

#

so i know at MAX usage, what can i do

glacial knot
#

?? Iโ€™m confused.
Or are you planing how much to buy atm?

stray coral
#

planning how much to buy

#

sorry

glacial knot
#

Kk. Users? Just you, you and partner, kids, leachers?

stray coral
#

lets shoot for 4 end users

#

a few linux distros

#

mac osx

#

and windows

#

and preboot to choose

#

all files and folders map

glacial knot
#

Preboot to choose? I donโ€™t quite get that
Do you want virtual machines with multiple OS? Because Iโ€™d do different vms for different OS

#

You can get by easily with 20G per Linux root.
For windows Iโ€™m unsure. I usually reserve 100G, but I barely use it
Probably similar for Mac

stray coral
#

so basically i want seemless vm

#

so you log onto pc:
Welcome
Pick your OS

glacial knot
#

And then just an estimate on data grave requirements

stray coral
#

then have user profiles map across os

#

it needs to be seamless for end user

#

so thats why no regular vm

glacial knot
#

Nice. In house AD. Have fun suffering

stray coral
#

uip

glacial knot
#

At least use openldap I guess

stray coral
#

masochist

#

lol

#

yeah that was the plan for that

glacial knot
#

What do you intend to run on the end user device?

stray coral
#

heaviest use would be gaming

#

so again

#

masochist

glacial knot
#

No. I meant whatโ€™s installed on your Laptop/Thinclient/Whatever

stray coral
#

nothing rn

#

it goes pxe

#

to thinstation

glacial knot
#

And pulls?

stray coral
#

yeah

glacial knot
#

You still need something that Interfaces with usb/Display and forwards stuff

stray coral
#

hmmm well i guess i was about to find that out

#

lol

#

im legit booting my laptop to the fresh image atm

#

lol

glacial knot
#

Maybe Iโ€™m confused about your Idea of vdi

stray coral
#

thats what im following

#

i thought that you could do like ephemeral images or w/e

#

PXELINUX is what im using, my b. hard to get points across via text
