Hmm maybe I've been in enterprise too long

clear ferry

real frigate
#

I thought about setting it up on aws, but then I was like... I want it local in case I REALLY want to annoy him.

deft pewter
#

I like the idea of automating it when he's there. You just going to do presence detection based on his phone?

real frigate
#

Yeah, he has his own user in HA so that when we go out of town, the house wakes up for him to take care of the dogs.

#

Hmmmm now I wonder if there's a way to get EventBridge to do random intervals to fire off a lambda... Damn you mono! lol

deft pewter
#

With how cheap lambdas are, you could always have them fire on an interval but then do a 'dice roll' to decide whether to do anything or not.

#

I think you get something like a million executions for free per month.

real frigate
#

Oh yeah, I'm not worried about that. I have my own personal paid plan... I'm just trying to figure out the best way to automate the interval completely within the AWS environment. I know I can do crons through event-bridge, I just want to see if I can randomize those to kick off the lambda randomly. Maybe I'll just throw a python script up on an ec2.

deft pewter
#

🤢

#

I know EC2's have their uses but I hate provisioning a server for something that can be done serverless.

#

Though I'm probably scarred from supporting a shitty legacy application across something like 20 EC2's per region.

#

They keep having to scale them up for load... instead of using a fucking Lambda/Step setup that scales automatically 🤦‍♂️

real frigate
#

Yeah, SAME. For work, we're in the middle of migrating ~200 crons running across 12 different EC2 into lambda/event-bridge.

deft pewter
#

Would EventBridge work for responding to S3 resources being created? My senior dev set something up with CloudTrail instead, which felt like the wrong tool for the job - especially seeing as there's a 5 trail per region hard limit.

#

Gah. From the docs, it looks like the only way it can tell what's happened with S3 is... via CloudTrail 🤢

real frigate
#

No, but you can trigger lambdas directly from S3 object creation.

deft pewter
#

Yeah, should've done that.

real frigate
#

Actually, I take it back... Yes, event-bridge CAN trigger off of S3 events:

But... It utilizes cloud-trail for that. LOL

#

We have a few of our lambdas directly triggering off of S3 object creation though... Super easy and best part is that you (thanks for helping me with that) can define the triggers in cloud-formation.

deft pewter
#

Did you have to do it manually though since the buckets already existed? We do everything via CF - at least until I can convince someone to try out CDK.

real frigate
#

It took some wrangling, but I did finally get it working directly in the template. The biggest hurdle was setting up the stack with existing resources and new resources in the same template.

deft pewter
#

You can do that? 😮

#

Not sure our lead would appreciate that. He's really anal about keeping our stacks pristine.

real frigate
#

We're JUST starting out with stacks, so yeah, I got away with it. Plus, we're a small dev shop, so we're defining as we go.

deft pewter
#

Ah. 10k+ employee multinational here... I can't get away with that 😂

#

I'd love a bit more freedom... but I put up with the bureaucracy for now because the pension and shares are good.

deft pewter
#

Ruby looks like wonky Python 😄

#

What are all those end tags about?

#

Current employer is a business software firm and I work on services that integrate with FinTechs... so we just use Node for ease of development. But it's funny... despite JS being so popular, they can never hire 😂

#

Not sure what they'll do when they refuse to let me work remotely and I hand my notice in.

real frigate
#

lmao! Yeah, we're trying to do all of our lambdas in node and my initial response was "but I can do that SO much faster in Python!" lol

#

Hell, I've been remote for YEARS now... We're opening our new offices in the next month... I don't know if I'm excited or not yet.

deft pewter
#

You been told you'll have to spend time there?

#

I don't think employers that haven't done the whole remote thing before Corona realise how difficult it's going to be to convince people to return. I'm not the only one in my dept that would rather quit.

real frigate
#

Yeah, at least 3-4 days a week.

deft pewter
#

Ouch...

#

If my boss said 1 day per week, I'd still be on the fence about quitting.

#

I suspect they're going to say 2-3 days a week and they'll even specify the days.

#

They keep telling us they're a flexible employer... dictating the days I spend there isn't flexibility.

real frigate
#

Yeah, that's what I suspect they'll do with us as well. But, because we're a small team, there's a lot of benefits in being able to be in close(r) proximity. Plus, we've all had our shots.

deft pewter
#

Eh... I don't believe any of that bull about face-to-face time making collaboration better. I haven't noticed any change with our team.

Sadly no garden this year 🥲

#

Didn’t get to it soon enough

#

And @real frigate , loving these temps

real frigate
#

Blech. We got robbed of our winter (we had ONE freaking day of snow... and that was like 30 minutes lol) and now summer is here before "official" summer... No. I'm mad. LOL

green inlet
#

Screw winter.....🤣

#

What part of the southeast are you in?

#

Only a few states in the southeast that can even think about snow

dawn prawn
real frigate
#

Charlotte... Yeah, usually at least the Blue Ridge gets a fair amount... but this past winter just sucked balls.

#

We even bought snow tires for my wife's Countryman last year... they're still sitting in the shed... sigh

dawn prawn
#

how good is a shed full of useless shit?

#

its the height of living

#

you made it

green inlet
#

Hah, yes, I am also in Charlotte

real frigate
#

No shit?!

LOL

#

I'm over in "west Charlotte" (Gaston county).

forest edge
#

snow tires? we don't even buy snow tires up north

#

complete waste of money

dawn prawn
#

get a room u 2

#

just make sure you keep control of your car on the way to the room

real frigate

@forest edge Yeah, true... but we wanted to actually take it IN THE SNOW! lol

real frigate

Shush now... just because you're on the wrong side of the planet doesn't mean you need to be all grumpy 😉 (I kid, of course lol)

dawn prawn

haha same

green inlet

@forest edge , doesn’t need snow tires, he doesn’t leave his house. I am in Union County 😉

dawn prawn
forest edge

reminds me of the cali's who move here and make posts on the local social media terrified of snow and wondering how they should proceed lol

dawn prawn
#

wtf is snow?

#

thought it was a thing in the movies

real frigate
#

Yeah... I used to live in NY years ago... when winter was a thing. When we first moved to NC, we had "snowpocolypse" and everybody was losing their minds over 6 inches... lol

green inlet
#

You would 💯 need snow tires in the mountains here with any kind of decent snow fall.

real frigate
#

Except... not this year... grumble

green inlet
#

Some of the roads are 30-45 degree slopes

real frigate
#

I did the Diamondback (NC-226A) in 2019 during a small snow "event" in my wife's Countryman... with snow tires... holy CRAP that was FUN!

#

Scared the hell out of her though. 😉

forest edge

never had an issue with the mountains in Colorado on just plain ole all terrain but then I am use to driving in the stuff

@dawn prawn you mean my apples

real frigate

Eh, it's not all that bad. The B48 in my 2015 is a really good engine.

forest edge
#

yea it's all fine till you talk to a mechanic who's honest with you lol

real frigate
#

I have one of those 😉 My Mini is by no means "stock" heh

#

@dawn prawn That thing is bad ass!!! lol

clear ferry
#

german cars are great, in a european setting, the moment they are sold in the US the problems arise because they are defaulted with bigger engines and more extras, that make them extra unreliable, we've been over this 😄

#

because murica == bigger better

dawn prawn
#

the germans fucked the land rover pretty badly

real frigate
#

Totally agree... One of the things I love about American-sold Minis is that they haven't fallen into that trap too much.

clear ferry
#

atleast with the BMWs if I remember correctly they default to the v6 engines, which also pull in air suspension etc

forest edge
#

they are overpriced and intentionally built to keep you investing money into it, not to mention the latest crap with subscriptions but like BMW has been charging out the ass for the simplist of shit for decades

clear ferry
#

which is hardly ever seen on a european model

real frigate
#

True. BMW in general in the US is WAY overpriced, WAY oversized and yeah, like @forest edge said, they are charging extra for shit that should be standard. The subscriptions thing is just insane.

forest edge
#

pretty sure it's the same everywhere it's just people like atx are use to getting it in the butt with no lube so they don't know any better

real frigate

LMFAO

clear ferry

I just never buy new cars 😄

I actually refuse to buy anything newer than 3-5 years.

dawn prawn

forest edge

This is true, zombies are better for the economy than your average Murican.

forest edge

I wonder, is looting an economy booster, or does it hamper economy?

I think he wears a monocle, does that sound handsome to you?

or a pirate?

deft pewter
#

The third person in as many weeks has handed their notice in within my department. All of them are leaving because the new role is remote. How many more need to leave before our director changes his stance? 🤣

clever mortar
#

It doesn't matter

#

All of you can leave, and they'll still stick their head in the sand

forest edge
#

caving doesn't exactly help them either

#

infact could make things worse

last cedar
#

I hate management like that

clever mortar
#

Eh, admitting you were wrong isn't a bad thing

forest edge
#

to a degree it is

clever mortar
forest edge
#

and dependant on situation

clever mortar
#

If you were wrong, admitting you were wrong isn't a bad thing

#

If it's only a disagreement, sure

#

But, if everybody else says A and you say B... odds aren't in your favour

deft pewter
#

I think his boss will wonder why his is the only department losing people.

forest edge
#

caving on a drastic job changing scenario could have all sorts of negative impacts not just for that one thing, but would raise the notion that anything is now up for grabs

deft pewter
#

Other depts are attracting talent. His is losing it.

clever mortar
#

But... whatever 😛

forest edge
#

well my initial response said caving

clever mortar
#

And nobody here was talking about caving but about admitting when you're wrong

#

You know, being adult...

forest edge
#

changing his stance indicates caving to me

clever mortar
#

Not simply pretending that if you keep denying it the world will change 😛

forest edge
#

still indicates caving lol

deft pewter
#

🤦‍♂️

clever mortar
#

You still need help

deft pewter
#

Raymond knows best.

forest edge
#

I see this is one of those, agree with me or get out situations lol

clever mortar
#

I have a lot more respect, and time, for people who can admit when they were wrong, than those who want to pretend they know best and worry about "caving"

#

Eh, you can call it caving if you want, but it worries me that you think that way

deft pewter
#

Pride before all else = bad.

#

I can be stubborn but even I'll listen to reason.

forest edge
#

I have had my fair share of leader type roles over the years, just how it comes across to me

#

it's not pride

clever mortar
#

Then people have failed to communicate/adult

forest edge
#

the fact that you think it has anything to do with pride is why you don't understanbd what I was saying

deft pewter
#

Sounds like being afraid to admit you're wrong 🤷‍♂️

forest edge
#

it's a job

#

not a daycare

deft pewter
#

Leaders that insist they're always right aren't leaders.

clever mortar
#

They're managers

deft pewter
forest edge
#

right

deft pewter
#

If someone's role exists only so they can spend their whole time telling someone else how to do a job, they're not important. Managers aren't important.

#

Leaders inspire. Leaders support. Leaders train.

#

Leaders know when they're wrong and listen to their team.

forest edge
#

leader/manager is basically the same thing in most cases

#

unless you actually have "leader" roles

#

team leader i guess?

clever mortar
#

Well, a leader is somebody that others want to follow

#

The job description and the behaviour aren't the same

forest edge
#

you guys must have some way diffrent job structure

clever mortar
#

Managers are those that fill a functional task role
Leaders are those that people will change jobs/employers for

#

Or possibly we've found people that we want to work for

#

As the saying goes, people don't leave jobs, they leave managers

#

People will also leave a job to go work for a leader they trust

forest edge
#

I feel like this perception is really limited to one specific type of job lol

clever mortar
#

Nope

forest edge
#

yea well none of that exsist or atleast it didn't exsisn in other job types

clever mortar
#

"Other"... yeah, sure

forest edge
#

there was no uprising and mutiny

clever mortar
#

What "other" are you talking of?

forest edge
#

due to one person "leader"

clever mortar
#

I've seen teams get gutted when a leader leaves, and most of the team follows them

forest edge
#

managers have a specific role to maintain what the company wants regardless what the employees think. they take input and pass it on but they don't generally have the authority to drasticly change things even if they wanted to

#

but a manager who can or does start to change things uisually ends up starting a ball rolling down a hill effect

deft pewter
#

they take input and pass it on
Can I refer you back to my earlier point about them being unimportant? An email takes input and passes it on and it's far cheaper.

forest edge
#

lol email

#

well if you can email the head hanhoo then do it

clever mortar
#

I know somewhere that removed an entire layer of what you describe as management, and got a performance and morale boost

deft pewter
#

If all they're going to do is parrot stuff, they're just a mailman. Get with the times and just send out email bulletins.

forest edge
#

but guess you never watched star trek.. they frowned by passing chain of command on that show lol

clever mortar
deft pewter
#

I used to be about 15 levels away from the CEO. I'm now no more than 6.

clever mortar
#

Shocked to hear that, just shocked...

forest edge
#

again this is limited to computer jobs i guess?

deft pewter
#

No...

clever mortar
#

And many other things

forest edge
#

i never heard of someone bypoassing the manager and going straight to the ceo

deft pewter
#

No-one said they're doing that. But you don't need managers and deputy managers and supervisors.

forest edge
#

you said that

deft pewter
#

You don't need regional managers and regional VP's. It's all bull.

forest edge
#

you specifically said that lol

deft pewter
#

I did not 😉

#

I said if your management just pass messages down to their staff, that could've been an email.

clever mortar
#

Somebody needs to go gain some reading comprehension skills

#

Nothing there said bypass management

#

It said that person's job is pointless

forest edge
#

was that sarcasim? you you guys do not relay sarcasim for shit lol

deft pewter
#

If the person in the middle of that chain of communication adds no value to the message, that person is pointless.

clever mortar
#

Or at least the job is

deft pewter
#

Nothing stopping a CEO (or their PA) from writing a bulletin to the whole business.

#

But if they do all the bull with cascading things and rolling them out in morning briefings to each team, that's just a waste of everyone's time.

forest edge
#

I explained the typical managers role

clever mortar
#

Hell, before lockdown they'd come to all the offices and everybody was invited to come and meet them and raise anything they wanted

#

Somebody legitimately did raise the issue that the tea in the office had been swapped for a cheaper, less pleasant, brand... ablobjoy

deft pewter
#

They've got their priorities right

clever mortar
#

The tea was changed... which I thought said a lot

deft pewter
#

Our complaints tend to be about the lack of cutlery in the dining areas.

clever mortar
#

Cutlery? You get trusted with sharp things?

deft pewter
#

Not in the new building. They aren't even trusting us with a gym, a cafe, a desk each...

clever mortar
#

😂

deft pewter
#

You know where I work. Take a look at the old HQ if you're interested. Custom built for us about 15 years back, still in good shape, has great facilities.

#

We're moving into a rental now. There's fuck all in it.

clever mortar
#

It's cheaper to rent something, sadly

deft pewter
#

Enough desks for 70% of us at once, and that's after removing all the things you need when you can't just nip home.

clever mortar
#

Actually, having had long chats with our facilities team, even renting is a PITA ablobjoy

deft pewter
#

It depends somewhat on how many people go in but the capacity is going to be something like 1400 people. The seating in the coffee shop has about 30 seats... 🤦‍♂️

deft pewter
clever mortar
forest edge
#

so essentially Tinkerer could never work for another company cause the grass wouldn't be green enough and almost anything would be an improvement for mono. if you both got laid off mono could easily start a new job somewhere else but tinkerer would probably starve jobless lol

forest edge
#

but i wasn't wrong lol

clever mortar
#

Don't think I have too much to worry about in the employment stakes...

deft pewter
#

I'm pretty sure both myself and Tinkerer could easily walk into other roles.

forest edge
#

i mean.. he would turn into you while you would just complain alittle less possibly

#

just be glad your not game dev's from all the shit i read

deft pewter
#

Hah. I'd never get into game development. Sounds fun but not worth the toxic culture, long hours or low pay.

clever mortar

deft pewter

If I described my work, you'd think it's boring... but I'll take solving difficult corporate stuff over making pretty games.

clear ferry
forest edge
#

but not the ceo

#

right?

deft pewter
#

My bosses wanted a way for us to easily handle file formats we hadn't seen before without having to get the engineering teams to write a new processor for each format. I recently designed a system for them that accepts templates and processes files based on the mappings in those templates. Someone else can write the template and I can work on something more fun than yet another processor.

forest edge
#

but then dosen't your work place have like 50 managers?

deft pewter
#

Really enjoyed solving that, came up with something clever.

probably why the military don't allow cell phones in nuclear buildings

deft pewter
#

Corona isn't related to smart phones. The vaccine's what gives the 5G signal.

forest edge
#

they are allowed outside the buildings a believe

glacial knot
#

You mean, they don't want tinder to have data on when they change guard duty?

deft pewter
#

Yes. But you can't bring electronic devices in without screening. They're not going to screen your cell phone every time you go in.

forest edge
#

but why not just ban them throughout the whole complex from the get go

clear ferry
#

You mean like the sites I go to where I turn off my phone 30km before I reach the site?

forest edge
#

yea

#

it makes the most sense

deft pewter

Nuclear sites are a massive target for hackers. They don't want electronic devices inside.

So, it basically ranks right up there with livermush then.

cedar chasm

the wikipedia image for fried livermush looks intriguing, to be honest, but seeing as this is the first I'm hearing of it I'll assume it's an acquired taste for most

real frigate

It's a southern thing (in the US) and yeah, absolutely an acquired taste... and really gross too.
