#

Question for anyone with electric knowledge- I want to buy a battery for a portable fridge that is 10A. If I buy a 100ah battery, does that mean it will run the fridge for 10 hours?

last dirge
#

maybe

#

depends on a lot

#

is the fridge the same input voltage as the battery?

young sigil
#

Unlikely. Look up what discharge rate that 100Ah is rated at. It will very likely be for less than 10A. The faster you discharge the lower the Ah rating.

glacial knot
#

if the battery will even provide 10A

raven sentinel
#

Looks like I need to do lot more research but I am looking for, how do I come up with a battery size when I know the amount of hours I need it to give power for the said fridge. For anyone curious, its the Waeco CF-50

glacial knot
#

Wh is a better measure than Ah for this kinda research

#

but if you are actually pulling 10A, you got a weird fridge. Is it pulling on 5V?

raven sentinel
#

No that was just an example. To make it easy for me to understand. It doesn’t actually pull 10A

glacial knot
#

ah, ok. It kinda matters for electronics. Since stuff behaves very different at high loads^^
it very roughly works that way. But there's issues with battery voltage not being the supplied one (e.g. for USB power banks that provide different voltages), so you first need to figure out what voltage that Ah value is for, then you can work from there

hushed basalt
#

Given the assumption that the battery and fridge are 12v which I believe they are

#

The fridge won't run constantly, and the battery: is probably rated for 100AH over 20 hours, and the suitable depth of discharge is probably only half of that

#

So basically you need to measure the sum power consumption of the fridge over a given period

#

And size that to a battery based on it's depth of discharge and discharge curve

raven sentinel
#

Thank you guys, I now know what to look for in the battery

last cedar
#

Fridges compressors (does it have a compressor or a peltier type thing) pull a lot of current when they start.

But yeah, what mono said, the Ah rating is over 20 hours. You might be able to run the fridge for 4 days on that battery, depending on how it works.

#

Get a maintainance free deep cycle battery for best performance, and least chance of hydrogen explosion

so far my favorite part of my trawling to understand the hatred of Ubiquiti is that most people in here call it Ubiquity.

#

@clear ferry so, your entire case is predicated on the fact that ubiquiti is bad for enterprise?

#

well not case but....hatred?

dusky plank
#

I'm here to say that Unifi is bad for consumers too 👋

clear ferry
#

they are a company that caters network amateurs into thinking they deliver enterprise class hardware, while having downplayed data breaches, forcing advertising on their paying customers and threatening their own users to brick their products if they upgrade their older hardware

dusky plank
#

too expensive, too slow, ADs for paid products

clear ferry
#

99% of the usebase of ubiquiti need a web-managed switch at best to do what they need

bold vault
#

I agree that the breach shouldn't have been downplayed. I've never gotten an ad in any of my time using their products so while I've read about it I can't speak to it, none of my friends who use their products have either. I wasn't aware they brick the products? I thought they just stopped providing updates?

#

Just helped a rural library get setup with 6 APs, and a cloudkey....cost about $1300 altogether (poe switch was leftover)

#

What would you have recommended in place of that?

#

I'm asking because I'm genuinely interested in understanding, I'm not a heavy networking guy I work in security

clear ferry
#

probably any consumer mesh product would have sufficed for public facing services

#

the omeada has gotten a lot of good reps

bold vault
#

They did need two separate networks broadcast via different SSIDs

clear ferry
#

pretty sure mostly any consumer stuff can do that these days

bold vault
#

hmm, last I tried none of the prosumer stuff could even handle the VLAN portion of that very well

clear ferry
#

I mostly touch enterprise grade, so not sure, I've just seen a lot of people tout the omeada or whatever it is called lately

#

many who ran ubiquiti moved to that

#

I have yet to see a ubi system irl, I've just seen the users who use it and the... interesting issues they face

bold vault
#

I'll admit I've run into some weird stuff where I'm like "this shouldn't be a problem"

#

But I just bill them as being affordable compared to Meraki and better than the SUPER GAMER ULTRAROUTERs

clear ferry
#

I've seen one meraki install in my life, I don't think it still lives

bold vault
#

I'd never tell someone to deploy ubiquiti gear in the enterprise world

#

oh meraki is very very common in the small/medium business market

#

That's who I see Ubiquiti as a competitor to

clear ferry
#

I work with mostly any install with 3x 1U switches -> 25000 switch port installs

#

😄

bold vault
#

Nice! Yeah I mean, ubiquiti is great for hands-off deployments in small to medium businesses and nonprofits I think

#

But I only do that out of basically volunteer work, which is again their niche

#

I'd never tell a network engineer of a large environment that Ubiquiti is worth anything in that case

#

Also like for my home, I enjoy the convenience of the UDM-pro hosting my cameras, managing my switches and APs and such

#

I had one of my old-timer sysadmin friends go a bit bananas angry about the Unifi Talk experience as well, for me never having touched telephony it was great to plug in a couple phones and they just work $8/mo for a landline phone has been super helpful for work calls and such.

#

But I would never suggest that as a solution for more than like...10 users?

not to bad, but f. expensive compared to google potos the last 10 years
due to the "always and forever free photo storage" change finnaly have to finish up my storage at home to be still able to take photos like a madman

Why not use something like NextCloud? All the benefits of having a 'cloud' service to copy stuff off a device but still get to use local storage and be in control.

I actually tried nextcloud in the first attempt but the app crashes with > 30.000 photos to sync

my work was big on returning to the office, and didn't even want to have people at home, even with something like 20 odd cases in the building haha

hearty depot
#

yea, so me

Now they want us back in the office. For me, that's a loss of 2 hours daily sitting in traffic, plus the getting ready in the morning. That comes at the cost of losing sleep and personal time. I finally had a healthy work-life balance.
prepping for bargaining, I love this job I got now. but when its coming down I'm ready to quit. As sysadmin/engineer I'm not required in the the office.
But currently 1d/w - this is ok, but fucks my sleeping scedule sideways

deft pewter
#

Even 1 day a week is too much if your job can be done from home. Time in office should be optional now unless a role demands it.

clever mortar
#

Official line here is that while they expect roughly 50% attendance, they don't require it (come in if it's better for you) and have admitted that it's going to be months to years before that's normal

deft pewter
#

I'll be handing my notice in when I'm asked to go back.

inner vault
#

I've been 100% WFH for almost 7 years... I would love optional office days haha

clever mortar
#

Yeah, there's a balance for sure 😄

#

There are things I miss about the office, but that's as much to do with the people and the way we work as anything else. It's hard to have spur of the moment chats with folks if you're not physically there.

deft pewter
#

I want the option to go in if I choose to. Just to occasionally see people and grab lunch together.

inner vault
#

but mandatory office? that's gonna need to be like a 1.3 salary demand multiplier at least

hearty depot
#

not paying for offices is defenitly a sweet deal for an employer

clever mortar
#

Or paying for less office space

deft pewter
#

Sunk cost fallacy. They think we need to use it because they already spent the money. Fuck what's best for us.

hearty depot
#

round about the same, we had a new office for like 4 monts 🤣

inner vault
#

we had a main office for C-level and meetings with high level clients, even though the whole org is techincally WFH, we let the lease lapse and now have a PO box instead.

deft pewter
#

I opened myself up to recruiters again on LinkedIn and I'm not even responding to anything that doesn't state the job is fully remote in their opening pitch.

#

Having an office I can go to once in a while, sure. Any minimum expectation around days spend there is a solid no from me.

inner vault
#

I'm a bit sad that I never got to go, it was in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letterman_Digital_Arts_Center sharing space with ILM and there was a ton of star wars stuff all over the place

The Letterman Digital Arts Center (LDAC), is an institution located in the Presidio, San Francisco, that has served as the combined home of Industrial Light & Magic, LucasArts, and Lucasfilm's marketing, online, and licensing units since 2005.

deft pewter
#

This past year has been amazing for work/life balance, even in the midst of a pandemic. I'm not going back to a commute and being distracted constantly in an open-plan office.

clever mortar
#

I do plan on going back to the office, but only a couple of days a week, and some weeks maybe only once shrug

#

I'll get less work done those days though 😄

inner vault
#

WFH was a lot easier before I had two kids < 4 years old

deft pewter
#

I enjoy being productive and find myself most productive when I'm left alone. Going back to an office any number of days is going to result in lost productivity and less happiness with my role.

inner vault
#

I also miss public transit commutes where I could read in peace

deft pewter
#

I've stayed this long because I'm happy with my role. I won't stay if that changes.

inner vault
#

I'd never do a driving commute though, fuck that.

You are okay as long as you are not raw meat

glacial knot

Mhhm

I think I'm one step before raw meat
I'd first have to die for that part

forest edge

atx is the buy no brand queen of tech. always take his opinions with a truck sized grain of salt

Buying stuff through work is under rated tbh

last cedar

I stopped looking at the news a while back

It is all depressing and makes me sad

at least sweden gives more for foreign aid than norway. you got that much going for you lol

hey, they have contributed as control group

So much fun in the world

forest edge
#

yea well that's why there are a wide variety of views on the matter from wasting money/aiding the shit to it's not enough yada yada.

#

I think conflict is just natural and it's the one's who don't like it that are the rarity. sure we all have conscious between right and wrong but telling you right now sending a fart bomb to norway will make more people feel good than those who feel bad

last cedar
#

I really wish no one had had thr idea of bullets and bombs

#

And we actually were friendly with each other

forest edge
#

well if there are any truth to Hollywood movies.. one day aliens will annihilate most of europe and the remaining part of the world will come together as one unity

last cedar
#

I believe it will probably take something like that happening to make change

#

For like 5 minutes till someone tries to take over and a fight breaks out

glacial knot
#

Gah. Grower lamps are way too expensive

clear ferry
#

Fun fact @forest edge we never see Europe in the alien invasion movies, so for all we know they just invaded the easy to invade country and left the rest of the world alone 🤣

#

I just had an epiphany, instead of rsyncing volumes between my nodes, I can just do lvm mirrors

forest edge
#

@clear ferryyou never see europe invaded in your ONE alien movie? lol

#

or was it more like a drama theater

clear ferry
#

lvm gurl

#

Just present a iSCSI volume from my Nas to any client

#

Then copy data from the client to the lvm lv

#

Then mirror the local drive in the vg

last cedar
#

I don't know what that is

#

But I think I should

clear ferry
#

One virtual iSCSI volume from an arbitrary source

#

One physical drive in a server

#

Create a lvm group

#

Mirror the two

Nice, you've memorised some shapes.

#

Make Room! Make Room! is a 1966 science fiction novel written by Harry Harrison exploring the consequences of both unchecked population growth on society and the hoarding of resources by a wealthy minority.
It was originally serialized in Impulse magazine.
Set in a future August 1999, the novel explores trends in the proportion of world resourc...

Yeah... Americans thinking they're international when they don't even have a passport 😂

glacial knot
#

I assumed they are saying they are from a different part of the country 😂

deft pewter
#

No. Americans have this whole thing of proclaiming that they're 'half Irish and half Spanish' or whatever bullshit sounds good. If you ask them about their heritage, someone six generations ago stepped foot in those countries for 5 minutes while changing boats or something.

#

Like, we get that the USA is a 'melting pot' but just because your great great great great great grandpa once visited somewhere, doesn't mean it's an integral part of your identity.

tidal bronze
#

So grandma counts 🤔

deft pewter
#

Personally, I'd say so, yes. If you have a close relative that actually lived somewhere else and migrated, you at least had some contact with someone with a different culture.

#

3+ generations back? That's a stretch.

glacial knot
#

also depends on whether they keep any customs, or try to mostly "if in rome, do like romans"

deft pewter
#

Another exception would be if you live in quite a close-knit community. No idea what it's like over there but in the UK, some cities have quite large minority communities. They'll identify as Indian even if they've lived here their whole life, because their whole community, and therefore culture, is Indian.

glacial knot
#

I know people (2nd generation immigrants) that get feisty if you imply they aren't just normal Germans

deft pewter
#

If they feel more strongly about their German culture than that of their grandparents, that's cool.
