still more than twice what I pay for the simple stuff I use currently^^
don't mind @clear ferry most the stuff he buys for cheap is actually just relabeled trash. the chinese slap a 10gb sticker over the top of a fast ethernet switch and he gobbles that shit up
the tag color did change? 🤔
tag color?
was it always like this?
that looks the same as before?
not to me, they have a blue border around them and it shows the number even if only one person attached to it
🤢 🤢 🤢
Finally going to get some to installing my structured networking box, hopefully this weekend or next. Now to decide if I want to run power to it or just go POE...
Hm... jailbroken itags, huh? That’s potentially interesting wrt the UWB radio chip which normally costs 10 times as much...
still looks the same for me
Itag
Auh.....you are indeed

Random question, but are goods imported from china/overseas required by law to state the contents on the packaging label?
I have gotten packages weighing 5kgs with gift and value $1 in the past, I don't mind 🤣
My two Aqara cubes that arrived today were $4 worth of documents...
If you are using PM in the Home Assistant Forums can you add a second or third person to the PM thread? Never mind, I just found it.
I heard lots are changing EU wide though regarding "gifts" from China
They can't really stop the practice unless they check every parcel... and that's not really a viable option.
Most will slip through the random spot checks they do now.
Tbf so far I haven't had any issues
but everything I order is always small packages which I suppose helps
I mean, it is, it's just expensive to implement. You'd need to scan every package with a back-scattering X-ray scanner, and then use software object recognition to determine which parcels have a high likelihood of containing contraband
Set those specific ones aside for humans to check manually
in before "shielded USPS boxes"
Sure, there are technical solutions... but they all drive up costs. I don't think any border service is going to bother.
They'll be more interested in drugs/weapons anyway. Not 'gifts'.
I'd be surprised if they're not already using X-ray to detect those... but Tinkerer's Aqara cubes? They don't care.
Even you don't care
I love it when stuff comes in and doesn't have duty on it.
My keyboard would've been expensive if they caught it 😂
Yeah, I've haven't had duty on stuff for over a decade, but the Norwegian government have signed deals with eBay and AliExpress to add duty in the stores
But it is still 50% less than buying it in Norway, so I don't care much

Finally bothered linking up the 7 additional NICs of my vSphere lab, and the additional nic of my truenas
And got lacp and vlans going there too
My daughter was very helpful
cables daddy? Help?
Hello there
they can, at least here… 📦 we do get the 30 series quite easy though 🥳
Still waiting for my new laptop
My manager has threatened them with me buying it locally
Then bill them
It costs around $3000 locally
Their internal price is $1700
While you're waiting for your laptop, here's another gadget you'll love: https://nerdist.com/article/tail-company-bluetooth-animatronic-tail-kickstarter/
Hey Mono, thanks for the tip about monit yesterday. Seems simple and effective. Its working nicely 🙂
So customisable too.
I think you'd be hard pushed to find something you couldn't monitor with it.
Yeah, seems very capable. I think I thought i needed a lot of fluff I really didn't.
LOL
Unlike monoit, where you hire mono to keep an eye on your devices
Beat me to it !!
If there's one thing I'm good at, it's self-deprecating humour.
Tax evasion in all these countries outside the US.......then come here and bang on the US 🤣👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤣
I've never evaded tax 🤷♂️
I'm just not going to complain if a vendor doesn't declare it...
Their actions, not mine.
An honest man would inform their government and request the proper amount be billed
My government already gets around a third of my income from me. I'd say that's plenty, especially compared to the States 😉
Lmao.....ouch
Then there's the 20% sales tax on what's left when I choose to spend it...
why did u change ur pfp
So, yeah... forgive me for not voluntarily handing over more money to them.
20% sales tax.....you should move to the states 🤣
You would be rich
I pay a whooping 7% I think
And I hate that on big purchases
we have 21%
Man....so like when you buy a car, 1/5 of your monthly payment goes to taxes
Or you just buy it outright and don't have a monthly payment 🤔
Make it back on all the money you saved by not paying interest, and not needing full coverage for X years
Well, still, 1/5 of your cost going to taxes
But I am with you 100% on cash payments
I own 4 cars.....no car payments....but, we have a mini junkyard in our driveway every night 🤣
I have nothing
With nothing also comes no stress and no headaches
but I have school
Still blows that our system that effectively punishes people who don't have enough money... by effectively charging them more money, spread out over time
"Oh, you have $25,000 + tax to buy this car outright? Done. No interest payments, and you can choose whatever insurance coverage you want"
"Oh, you need an auto loan? This is gonna cost you $35,000 over the course of the loan, AND the loan company requires full coverage, so that's gonna be expensive too..."
Also, the entire time you're paying that loan back, inflation of the US dollar + depreciation of the asset is fucking you 😄
it's just a super bad deal all around
Also, if taxes increase, your projected total payment for that loan can go up drastically
I am confused.....you are mad at car companies, insurance companies, or the rich?
All of the above 😄
And your proposed change?
karen alert?!
@worldly axle Socialist leftists are Karens now? 😂
it was a joke lol
But @subtle pasture , you see all the socialists complaining about all the taxes they pay. You pay one way or another
@green inlet Single-payer insurance (all insurance. health, care, home, etc), and a steeply progressive tax that heavily leans on the wealthiest members of society.
That's just healthcare, and republicans kinda ruined it by eliminating the individual mandate
it was entirely self-funded before that happened
Also, Obamacare was meant to be significantly more expansive than it was, but again, it wouldn't pass the Republican senate... even though it was basically the same healthcare bill proposed by republicans in the 90's, under Clinton.
There's a mind-blower: Republicans tried to pass what was effectively Obamacare, decades before Obamacare...
"Oh, wait, it's the democrats proposing the same policy? Down-vote it into oblivion!"
I don’t want to get into politics....but I can almost 100% guarantee they weren’t the same. Anyway, I don’t rely on governments to fix thing. I follow the current policy and help people as much as I can locally. Anyway I can. History has shown that anyone that relies on governments to fix problems....anywhere during any time prob has found themselves less than satisfied
that only goes so far lol
Even 🌈 🦄 and 🧚 (Norway) people complaining about the crazy taxes they pay
About the only difference between the bills was how they were funded, and the original bill proposed in the 90's would have offered more expensive coverage than what eventually got passed under Obama 🤷♀️
It goes farther than any government has....in my book
Up there^^^^^^you were evading taxes on purchases 😉
it's the reason you pay 3x+ in medical
Sorry, I'm a little raw on this issue because my private health insurance has been a nightmare as of late. Kaiser Permanente can go screw themselves 😂
I have something called employer funded health insurance because I worked hard and got a good job 😉
and that dosen't change
I tried, but nobody replied at wewantmoretaxplease@fairycountry.no
🤣
healthcare should not be dependent upon employment. That just makes you even more of a wage slave...
yet you still pay more than most other countries lol
Government health care
I have work to do....you guys talk amongst yourselves
@subtle pasture, single payer hearthcare was tried and failed miserably in the us.
No I don’t. Not if you include their taxes. Look up at what mono is paying
It's actually still significantly better than the nothing we had previously, and I don't see the other party doing any kind of healthcare reform... they had 4 years where they owned all 3 branches of government, and didn't come up with anything better
Not really. We have the presidency, but that doesn't actually mean as much as you'd think
Maybe a little less politics and a little more raccoon posts pls?
this is why it continues to keep going. all they gotta do is convince enough of you that your not in the same boat as your neighbors and you lap it up like a overheated dog in front of the water bowl lol
Uhm....Trump did whatever he wanted
Well, he said he wanted healthcare reform... and that didn't happen 🤷♀️
And I am supposed to be working 🤣
I laugh when people want things free....nothing is free. Someone pays somewhere.
it's not about wanting free
You want the rich to pay for it
Move on, please...
I mean, they benefit disproportionately from the existence of society as a whole, so yes.
if you knew you could charge the dude across the street 3x the price then what you could charge your neighbor on your left.. you would do it.. and that is what the private sector in this country is doing lol
No....that’s just it...I wouldn’t. Because I have morals and ethics
then you should be just as upset as most everyone else
because that is still what is happening under your nose
Not my nose....
true, you could be half norwegian
I saw this but things were moving so fast....I am sorry for this. All of my kids were born at Kaiser and we got nothing but the best care. My wife was in the hospital for close to 3 months
I'd barely trust Kaiser to handle removing my appendix, at this point...
They've straight-up prescribed me medication I was allergic to without actually checking first. That was fun.
If there was something I could do to help, I most certainly would
Gotta love going into anaphylactic shock while in the middle of driving yourself home because you're allergic to the oil in the injection they just gave you.
And they gave zero warning that that was a thing that could happen.
mistakes do happen
That's.. a pretty big mistake...
yes it is, but they can happen at any point regardless
If they'd held me for observation for 15 minutes, it would have been caught in the office. They actually do this for the COVID vaccine (at least at the pharmacy where I got it), which makes total sense
Kaiser still hasn't adjusted their policy. They just send people out the door...
yea this pandemic as highlighted a lot of shit many saw before and those who refuse to see the issues just keep on ignoring it lol
I'm just lucky I didn't get into a car accident while fighting the urge to pass out, wheeling myself to the ER...
personally I think we deserve most of the shit that happens to us in this country
Oh, and then I got charged $800 for the ER visit, which I had to dispute, because it was Kaiser's screwup
And was, at one point, told that if I didn't want an ER bill I should have gone to the members-only ER on the 3rd floor...
I doubt you can sue as well, they likely had you sign something that waved your right to have that chance lol
I'm like... how the fuck was I supposed to do that in the condition I was in? Just... yikes...
Icing on the cake: The version of the drug that uses a different oil that I'm not allergic to? Not covered. $380 a refill...
I moved all my prescriptions to Amazon after that fiasco. $58 for the same drug, even though they don't take my insurance, which wouldn't cover it anyway...
I'm very, very done with Kiaser, but it's all my employer offers! Whee!
I didn't sign anything at the office visit, but I'm sure it's in my membership agreement somewhere -_-
it's actually the pharmaceuticals to blame for the prices and not the private insurer. the issue comes from Kiaser not having a big enough member pool to have any weight in disputing costs so all they can do is pass what they are being charged onto you. This is why medicare is so nice, cause the pool is huge and they have the weight to tell the pharmaceuticals companies "no" and they obey cause those pharmaceutical companies can't afford to lose out on that much money
Pretty sure Kaiser has a larger pool than Amazon Pharmacy (aka PillPack)
Kaiser is huge...
it's still a drop in the bucket
just imagine how many diffrent private insurers there are just in this country
and imagine how we are all seperated into small pools to fit within them
Kaiser Permanente is the 2nd largest health insurer in the US... beaten only by UnitedHealthcare Group...
see if you can find out just how many members they have
and then compare that to the number of people still left in this country
They say "Over 12 million US members" on their website
ok, so what countries only have 12 million population and what do they pay?
Not the point. 12 million should be enough for bargaining power...
Then explain how Amazon manages to get the price down to $58 on the same drug...
I dunno, didn't even know you could get that shit through them
they must have struck some kind of deal
Though apparently I get an "Amazon Prime discount" on drugs, so that's nice. lol
The height of captialism
amazon might also be eating some of that cost
🤣
they take loses on shit all the time
Yeah, I kinda hate that Amazon is doing the whole pharmacy game better than actual pharmacies...
Though I suppose now Amazon is an actual pharmacy. They straight up bought PillPack and made it their own offering.
Kaiser also required me to drive to an actual Kaiser-owned pharmacy (closest one is an hour round-trip away from my house), during a pandemic, to pick up some of my meds, because they "couldn't be shipped"
Amazon has no trouble shipping all of my meds, so I dunno what Kaiser's malfunction is >_>
@deft pewter Been there, done that. I have a number of gray-market internet pharmacies bookmarked so I can order whatever I want, regardless of what my doctor wants to write a prescription for 🤷♀️
I meant you shipping them, not having them shipped to you.
It's amazing what you can solve by throwing money at the problem...
Why would I personally mail drugs out? O.o
I didn't say you would. And please don't tag me on every reply :/
that is a horrible phrase and part of the reason we are in the boat we are in lol
This ^
I was pointing out the humour in corporations being able to mail that all over without questions but if you, as an individual, did the same, you'd likely be committing a crime.
It's all okay if it's for profit.
Ah, yeah. Depends on what you're shipping. There are a number of drugs that, while prescription-only, aren't controlled substances
@deft pewterhow else do you think @clear ferry gets his suppository pills?
I thought he still had them hand delivered by that weird guy down his street.
I've literally had to throw a cost-benefit analysis at my doctor before...
"So you want to send me to a specialist. The appointment is 2 weeks out, and will cost $300 to attend, and they only MIGHT prescribe the drug I already know works (even ran blood tests, everything's golden). Ok, but why would I bother with any of that when a 3-year supply of the same drug costs $120 on a gray-market internet pharmacy, I can have it here next-day, and there's no "maybe" about it?"
She was perfectly capable of writing the prescription without referring me to a specialist, btw. No idea why she was waffling so hard...
maybe some liablity scare
Literally already ran labs to rule out any liability. lol
I basically did my doctor's job for her 🤷♀️
since the reform there are no general doctors anymore, everyone is a specialist so they might not be able to legally do that
Except this was an endocrinologist who wanted to refer me to a different endocrinologist...
Literally a different doctor with the same specialty, who worked at a different hospital.
it's a mess for sure, at least you knew the cost before doing it
I'm just sitting here like "...why is this so difficult compared to just flipping the table and ordering it at full price?"
I was refered to a heart specialist at a hospital and wasn't told my insurance wouldn't cover most of it so had a hefty bill that was compounded simply because it took place inside an actual hospital instead of a clinic
I was so pissed
The whole "surprise, your insurance doesn't cover the thing you were told to go do by your doctor" scenario should be made impossible by any means necessary...
why Americans should have used this pandemic to address our healthcare but i guess instead we want to point out other stuff
Unethical life pro tip: Let medical bills go to collections, and pay the collections agency rather than the hospital. They'll often settle with you for much lower total sums that the original bill, because they purchased the debt from the hospital for pennies on the dollar.
You can also stipulate that you'll only pay if they don't touch your credit score.
I've reduced $1500 medical bills to under $200 this way...
Not worth it to do this with every bill, but the truly ridiculous ones? Yeah...
was gonna say, that is kind of playing with fire lol
Yes and no. Collections agencies are usually super happy to work with you if you're willing to pay them a chunk of the total right on the first call
They're still making a profit, because they sure as hell didn't pay $1500 for that $1500 in debt
pretty sure your credit report gets tagged with that regardless
I don't have any credit, so 🤷♀️
Never owned a credit card. lol
No auto loan, no mortgage
Even if they touch my credit, meh...
I have a friend who had to go into bankruptcy when he was younger, screwed any credit he had and he's paying hard right now for it. credit is used in so much shit
But they never have. My completely arbitrary 700 score (I dunno how I have a 700 when it's based on absolutely no credit history) remains...
might be a starting point based on your current income
The only time that score has ever dipped was after applying for a Visa card. They did a hard check, which hits your score for some stupid reason.
Was denied for the Visa, because my score was "too soft" due to a lack of history. Whee!
"Sorry, can't give you credit because you've never had credit"
Wonderful loop to be stuck in
if you have a main bank, it's more easy to get a cc through them than anywhere else.. altho these days Discover seems to take anyone lol
Yeah, I could get a card through my bank, with an interest rate of 35%
thats not bad
That's...awful...
you have to start somewhere
35% as a start is not bad
It's literally cheaper and lower-interest for me to take out a loan, and then use that loaned money to open a secure card.
building credit is a must
you will hit that brick wall sooner or later
unless you plan to move to Montana and live off the grid lol
I mean, if I ever want to build credit quick I can always use all those fun "first-time home buyer" perks and get a mortgage
because apparently taking on 30+ years of debt builds credit like nobody's business
its not quick by any means
Hell of a lot quicker than doing it incrementally with secured cards >_>
That interest rate is insane! I use a card where I get 0,5% back, pay it off in full every month, never pay them interest
My parents are still holding on to ancient credit cards with interest rates between 3 and 7%
I want in on that shit 👀
I believe our standard is 18,9 or such
Never checked because I never have to pay it
I think you have 45 days to pay off otherwise they charge interest
Also, I don't like the concept of charging higher interest rates to people who've never had credit before. "Oh, you're new at this? You get to start on HARD MODE"
it's not ancient. the longer you have and use a card those rates drop
thats the "history" aspect
@forest edge No, they started at 3%. They also got these cards in the late 70's / early 80's...
either way, it's still the same
I started out with over 30% interest rate and i'm down in single didgits
course i started late
cause i hate cc
your rates go down while your limit goes up
but if you have no or little credit history you don't get that. you are considered high risk
Again, leading to the scenario of starting newbies out on hard mode
i wouldn't call it hard mode
It punishes their fuckups harder than older members
it's your choice to charge so much shit on your cc you cannot afford to pay it off by the end of the month lol
And I'm not even saying I'd screw up, I just disagree with the entire concept / setup
actually that structure is well made with the exceptions to the "elite"
Sure, yeah, ultra high-end credit cards have ridiculous operating frees just to keep them open
it's not that
I mean, that's part of it. lol
it's the fact that middle class cannot hit certian scores that open up even better savings unlike rich people
Charging $300,000 a year just for the honor of having the account is a start
like my auto insurances for example
the next tier up would save me like 500 a year lol
There we go giving the rich breaks again... >_>
but i cannot even hit that cause I simply don't have the income required to achieve it
30%+ interest sounds dumb but there's nothing stopping you just making one purchase a month and paying it straight off.
"Oh, you can absolutely afford our most expensive package, no questions asked? Here's a discount just because you're so rich..."
#Capitalism
I don't need credit for anything but I still make a point of spending something on each card each month to keep my rating high.
and that's how they instruct us to build credit in schools
Heh, my personal finance class barely even touched on credit. It mostly taught us how to do our tax returns the old-school on-paper manual way...
well regardless you should start working on it. the sooner the better
even if it just collects dust and and you use it to buy gum once a month
I mean, that's what my my attempt at opening a Visa card was 😛
I give a credit card company a shot every once in a while. So far, no bites 🤷♀️
check out discover. the cash back shit is awesome and they do like 2X back in gift cards such as amazon gift cards.. hint hint..
I have an HSA. No point in using Amazon gift cards for meds 😛
Though you absolutely can, which is kinda wild...
most of the shit we buy in this house through amazon is paid by those damn cash back gift cards.. i meanm if they are going to give us twice the amount in gift card hell yea!
@forest edge Poor financial advice: Apply for store credit cards every time you check out, getting the instant savings on your current purchase, while knowing you'll be denied.
I could save so much money at Target this way...
Poor advice because of all the hard checks it'd do on your credit 😛
I do kinda wonder how many times they'd let you do that, though 🤔
accidentally ending up with multiple cc's is also bad
Yeah, you have to know for sure you'll be denied to pull that stunt
If your credit is already hosed, however... "Thanks for the 10% off my order, see you next week"
Again, this is terrible financial advice, but hilarious to think about
quite alot of people do that shit without thinking
I think the worst offender is the Starbucks Visa, which actually has a monthly service fee just to keep it open
yea
A couple isn't a problem. I have two accounts 🤷♂️ Wouldn't try to collect them though
2 or 3 is fine. was refering to those with 5+
3 trillion spent on shit due to covid..🤢
if you got kids, may wanna have tht talk with them about how they might be poor when they grow up lol
@subtle pasture , I am kinda confused when you blame one doctor for letting you leave and then chastise another for going the extra mile, sending you for a second opinion. Also, I am not sure what you mean by black market meds but I have been to other countries that don’t need prescriptions and pharmacies aren’t regulated. I wouldn’t by from them.....just me though.
Which doctor did I chastise for going the extra mile?
Maybe I misunderstood
I chastised that second doctor because she was perfectly capable of evaluating my bloodwork and writing the required prescription, but instead wanted me to wait 2 weeks for an appointment with another doctor of the same specialty who MIGHT write the prescription, because she didn't want to do it herself.
Or second opinion
And that appointment was going to cost an additional $300... for a "we might help you... might..."
I don't need a second opinion, I already know exactly what works...
And my current doctor has seen the labs she herself ordered. She already knows it works.
I don’t think she is part of some conspiracy to move you around doctors without a reason
She had a reason....
Wait you are still talking about this?
I mean, she wouldn't give me a reason why she wouldn't write the prescription. After 3 years of back-and-forth with her, the best I got was "I'm worried you'll throw a blood clot"
Clotting factors = normal healthy range. Not a problem.
So, she was concerned and wanted you to get a second opinion 😉
Nope... it was bullshit
Lmao....ok...
Because my clotting factors were normal, and have been normal for years...
She straight-up had to ignore all my medical history to even suggest that
I'll accept "incompetent" before "concerned" with my current endocrinologist...
But she's the only one in the area, so I deal with her
I am not saying all doctors are good....after 3 years I would have changed doctors anyway. There needs to be a level of trust with a doctor. If it’s not there, you should move on
Yeah, I would have changed doctors too, if I had that option...
Auh, just saw that last line
Normally it's SO not worth fighting with a doctor over the same thing for 3+ years. lol
@worldly axle pdobrien3 brought it back up 😛
Shit. I might even drive an hour for a trust worthy doctor. I do remember that being a thing with Kaiser. You had to go to one of their network doctors
I guess we just got lucky with our in network people
It's a 30 minute drive to the nearest Kaiser hospital, so I already burn an hour of my day every time I need to see her... next-closest would be in Oakland, which is a 2 hour drive away
One of the last experiences we had with Kaiser was the birth of our kids.....it was some great maybe it overshadowed some things. We still get Christmas cards from one of our doctors 21 years later
Also, don't even think about trying to get plastic surgery through Kaiser. That was a nightmare, and caused me to straight-up give up on having the procedure I wanted done...
Went to 3 different Kaiser plastic surgeons, not a single one had a photo of their past work...
And you don't do plastic surgery sight-unseen...
Oh, and they couldn't give me that information over the phone. I had to make an appointment with each surgeon, and show up in person ($300 appointment + burning PTO hours)
After blowing almost a grand on nothing but disappointment, I gave up.
Might as well go private and pay entirely out of pocket, it'll be cheaper than hunting down a decent in-network surgeon... and I have yet to see a private plastic surgeon who DOESN'T have photos of their past work available
I've literally never had a "good" interaction with any Kaiser services... I think they peak at "mediocre"
Imma stop ranting before this crap raises my blood pressure -_-
this is something for Facebook messenger
Imagine using Facebook in 2021
I know a couple Facebook die-hards, yeah
I need to round up enough of their friends to have an intervention
"Look, all of us would REALLY like to uninstall the Messenger app from our phone, but... well... you see... that's why we've called you here today"
Cans and strings? I will admit, I still have Facebook and messenger but I rarely use it. What do you use outside of sms? Snapchat? I am guessing there is a huge age gap here? After years of banging my head against brick walls, I finally learned the only result was a headache. I now navigate around problems instead of trying to change minds that probably won’t change.
what is the reason you are still on facebook? I deleted my account in 2016 an I believe it is still ready to reactivate five years later with all my photos and likes after five years, I might even need to send a forgot password email to do so but I fear they still have all the data
Who knows....prob pure laziness. Fear of missing something 🤷🏼♂️. I mostly log on just to clear my notifications
Plus it is linked to my OnlyFans account
I think about 90% of my chat takes place on Discord, Teams, or Slack
discord and sometimes even mail D:
Need facebook to access certain groups
I suspended my facebook account last year as I wasn't using it much and they took down all legitimate Australian news pages, leaving anti-vaxer and chemtrail nutjob pages up (for a while at least). It was a test to see if I'd miss it. I don't.
I've actually never had a Facebook account
Do you know what the FBI puts in those chemtrails though?
that australian news fee thing for links is fucking hillarious
oh snap cdc lifts restrictions on vaccinated people. no masks, no social distancing
lol finally get my mom setup and able to work youtube tv on a her roku tv to find out that google wants to switch to using a codec that would require hardware decode support which roku's don't use
Only place I can watch baseball anymore w/o going back to Satan... and of course my HT uses Roku.
well we got till December to find out if youtube tv fucks us or not lol. course some of the higher end roku's like the ultra might be fine but my sticks won't be lol
High fructose corn syrup?
Ah good to know. I'll be dumping YTTV after October (when the post-season ends) so .. till next year 🙂
High fructose corn syrup with GPS.
It's probably corona in gas form tbh
Do you think Jeff Bezos has a stipulation in his will
"upon my death, shut down AWS, kthnxbai suckers"
I can only hope
Not my dark sites

Sigh! Microsoft word... inserting a comment changes the layout of the document. And auto-formatting capitalizes the first word after a comma!
@low harness just move to LaTeX already
I should have gone that way years ago
I just need to kick myself
That's a blast from the past
I remember using that to create documents back at Uni
I suggest this on EVERY meeting where we're discussing document management.
I'm even working on a mockup of a system to enable people to write their reports in markdown and have it automatically converted.
At least my closest manager is with me on that one. But there's plenty of dinosaurs around...
Just imagine in five years, all DevOps will make reports on tiktok
No more documents
I can really recommend pandoc, btw. It pretty much perfectly translates Word <-> latex <-> markdown <-> html <-> you name it
A customer of mine mentioned they hired a junior dev who had very little experience using the keyboard
??
He just did flows or whatever on an ipad
we would be hurting now for sure and so weird that we came to rely on that fucking amazon so much in such a short amount of time
Fooking evolution shit
Whats a devops
augmented reality will replace mouse and keyboard soon lol
It's kind of a cool background story, though... "Hey, we need a LOT of computers to be able to handle all the book sales around christmas... but what should we do with them the rest of the year?"
Like that croissant identifying AI which they employed to find cancer cells instead... or some dailyWTF I read years ago about a company that used machine learning an ANN to reformat a handful of excel sheets, and now use that program to generate haikus or something.
lol that's how a lot of medical treatments come to be. developed for one thing, fails miserably at it but by the off chance they find out it does ok-->good at doing something else
nothing goes to waste in a sense
I just did that for a Norwegian non profit cancer research
I rolled a big server into a DC 3 years ago
That project never got realized
So they non profit got the server for free this year
And I installed it for them
@clear ferry did you say latex?!
lol hackers calling themselves Darkside
Darkseid > Darkside
Yes. Darkseid of the moon.
Any plot involving secret moon bases is good.
The sequel was equally entertaining.

Is it possible to send an HDMI-CEC command from a source that only turns on the AVR if you have a [Source]->[AVR]->[TV] setup? So just to playback music w/o turning on the TV?
depends on what inputs your avr has
woho, my car is no longer a bus
best I can do without recreating frigate in node-red
NR 🤢
you gave up on frigate already? lol
How so? It's got 7x HDMI inputs which all have HDMI-CEC
you can send the command to a specific device (avr in this case) instead of the broadcast adress or dump on/off commands on the tv end
You flew the *NSYNC flag high and mighty earlier and now Macklemore makes you feel dirty
Shhh. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
Oh hells yes.....if something that happened in vegas, ever leaves Vegas.....I am fsucked 😉

is there any reason to use ipv6 in my internal net if my isp doesn't provide me v6 yet?
exactly nothing but pain and distress
that's why i disabled it long ago thanks
me too
<cue atx coming in here to say that Norwegia has had ipv6 addresses for home users for 20 years>
i have a v6 gateway via wireguard site 2 site though, I can reach v6 endpoints through that
my ISP does support IPv6, but it keeps going down. At least that's what pfSense thinks
anyone know of a airplay alternative for windows? just looking for audio, dlna is only for specific players I just want to stream to a generic audio device (runs on pi, already have shairport on that pi for apple clients, search for a windows alternative)
eh, I will just use airparrot on the windows clients I guess
I use airserver, it's not free but works well for me
plus it includes google cast, and other stuff
i don‘t want to stream to windows, i want to stream to linux from windows

you know @clear ferry was on this flight lol https://youtu.be/Cg6jvKt2h6s
We've all been in the situation of flying with a fussy child or sitting next to one on a plane. Just last week this mom got national attention when she was kicked off a United Airlines flight because her baby was crying. The Vancouver-bound plane carrying Canadian singer Sarah Blackwood and her son hadn't even taken off when the trouble began. S...
It should be acceptable to yeet kids like that (and their ignorant parents) out the door mid-flight.
I'm sure there's some kind of safety issues with the chance to hit others on the ground
Who said anything about doing it over the ground? Most 8 hour flights will take you over oceans
Free sea burial. Win.
there can still be container ships. Imagine the poor worker that's been on route for 3 weeks, just to be killed by a falling human siren
They might appreciate being put out of their misery.
We all know how angry tom gets when he's at sea.
I'd be sorely tempted to scream in the kid's ear until he stopped.
He even set the damned ship on fire last time.
I'm always tempted. Then I remember I'm British and too polite to actually go through with it 😢

I've done quite a few transatlantic flights, and transoceanic, plus within Europe, I think I've had one really annoying kid
But annoying fucking adults that should have been aborted long time ago
Dang there are a lot of them
Just like how there are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners, I think there's no such thing as bad kids.
The parents should be shot.
People who just put their seat back all the way without asking should be hung on a wall
Eh... I do that 😓
On the wall you go
I've not done a lot of flying. So far I got lucky I guess
Or maybe the improvized group of people flying solo chatting on the flight to ireland was the annoying adults. then my bad 😄
On nearly every flight I've been on, the person in front of me does it. If everyone else is doing it, I'm gonna do it too.
I fucking hate that I can't use twitch emotes here
Me being respectful doesn't change how all the other assholes behave.
A few people chatting is fine. It's when someone starts shouting or creating a scene...
oh, it's easy to prevent that. Just make sure your knee is felt the entire flight. Fixes the issue within 15min
I've done that on bus travels a couple times 🙂
Or night flights where they make a ton of noise after the lights go out.
I have my headphones on the entire flight anyway, unless I'm flying with someone
My wife just sleeps, so I always have headphones on 😄
And yet somehow people are still too loud...
Where do I buy that!?
Scroll down a bit, I shared the link.
Oh, that was same thing. Cheers!
Slightly disappointed they didn't have an option to pay in doormats though
Or valves
Make your own shitcoin that uses proof of doormats
As long as it doesn't use more electricity than the whole of Argentina.
Easy. Build your mining farm in Argentina
Crypto is a joke. The sooner it all collapses, the better.
Let’s first see what happens with GME
You mean all the internet neckbeards playing games with stocks?
Yes
Nah, crypto should be banned
Killing the planet ffs
I only acquire organic doormats
Miners and shitcoin investors don't care about the planet. Just profit.
Hard to do anything about the miners though. They'll keep doing it as long as people keep buying.
Investors, on the other hand... when it collapses, they'll lose everything 😂

He admitted he's old 😮
I've been 90 for the last 20 years according to my wife
We need a title older than 'elder'.
I hope to dog you're not eternal.
I'm confused. Apple Music are expected to launch lossless audio soon... with two tiers.
So that's 'lossless' and 'lossy', right? 🤔
we are always lossy when a signal is converted from analog to digital. It's about the quality of that transformation. The lossless property is then in the digital domain
I get that... but you can't have tiers of lossless. If you're going to claim that you have a lossless format and another format with lower fidelity, you have to admit that the second one has, by definition, lost information compared to the first.
People fall for this marketing shit, even though it's a blatant lie.
they are both up to the usual standard of stuff labeled as lossless audio
if you complain about that, complain about using the term at all
That's not my point. Even if what counts as lossless is a bit vague, offering two formats where one has lost information in the other means you give up the right to call it lossless 🤷♂️
The top one, sure. The second one is missing information that your own 'lossless' format has.
you need those $$$ gold contact hdmi cables to hear the real difference
Nonsense. Gold contact optical cables are better.
top left quarter of a lossless image is still a lossless image
I can't tell if you're trolling...
"Here's a lossless track but we're only going to provide you with frequencies between 1k and 10k Hz"
I think your point is being pedantic and useless
But I see where you are coming from
Sure, it's pedantic... but it's correct. 🤷♂️
some people see 176.4kHz as lossless, others 192khz
Changing the sampling rate is different than compressing the resulting data in a way that throws information away on purpose
So you're saying going as low as 48kHz can still be truthfully considered as lossless? That's some really low sampling.
Lossless usually means ‘compressed in a way that can be uncompressed without loss’
I wonder what sample rate the audio hardware in macs take. iirc 48kHz is the default in pulse, and a significant amount of hardware
It’s ‘CD quality’, even though that’s a bit of an anachronism now
As long as the lossless file is at the same sampling rate and frequency as the original master, it should be good
How many masters were recorded as low as 48?
Normally it jumps to 24 bit 96Khz Mono. There were super audio cds
I am not certain tbh
Thry might be oversampling some releases to make it appear that one lossless is better than another?
Unsure

Azure is cool but AWS is better 😉
But Azure is free 😉
And 'better than nothing' is debatable. Get stuck with a bad registrar and it's a nightmare to move.
AWS has a free tier...
I only go over the free tier because I'm paying for zones in Route53. Nothing else costs me money.
S3... free. Lambda... free.
If you prefer Azure or GCP, that's cool. But don't claim that AWS costs more.
I didn't say that aws costs more, I just said that for a student plan, you get more with Azure
Except you don't 🤷♂️
More hours 🤷♂️
Hours of what? There's more than one service on each platform.
Wait, you're right. Azure is only $100 credit, I thought it was a premium plan
Anyway, I was talking github w/ students, and that was listed
No. And you'll burn through $100 in no time.
Nah, I'm not always right.
AWS's free tier is pretty generous though. For Lambda (forever):
The AWS Lambda free usage tier includes 1M free requests per month and 400,000 GB-seconds of compute time per month.
For EC2 (first 12 months):
750 hours per month of Linux, RHEL, or SLES t2.micro or t3.micro instance dependent on region
For S3 (first 12 months):
5 GB of Standard Storage
Lambda is really good tbh
I haven't used repl.it. If I want to code with someone, it's usually someone on my team and we have plugins in our IDE to do collaborative stuff.
If you think Lambda is good, take a look at Step Functions too.
Fix my repo
Fix it yourself.

Dotly - Step Functions are basically state machines where each processing 'node' in the machine is a Lambda. Really easy to build fairly complex apps without provisioning a server/container once you know what you're doing.
The project I'm on at the moment is my first time working with Step Functions but they're really intuitive.

Yeah, this is possibly the new normal. It's disgusting.
Fucking subs to use the vehicle you already paid for.
it was inevitable that car manufactures would stop making multi tier vehicles at a factory and rather just lock out features to create the multi tier after the fact but to charge on a subscription base is absolutely stupid
bitwarden is amazing
Yeah, I'd get the tiered stuff with optional payments to upgrade. Subs are dumb.

I mean, it‘s not like android does this by default without any app anyway
reddit is free, they have to get revenue from somewhere
Android is for people who don’t appreciate their privacy 🤣
They do... all that reddit gold and badge crap. And selling your data to China...
Found the PostmarketOS user
i received badges, i didn‘t pay for any of them. what does china have to do with it?
China bought a large stake in Reddit a while back. You'd have to be naive to think they're not using your data now.
And someone is paying for the gold to give out badges. Doesn't matter that you're not, that's reddit's income.
It's like how free games with microtransactions cope from the minority of whales pumping tons of cash into them.

i tried apollo, as i said. i don‘t like it
there use to be an "Unofficial reddit" app. is that not still a thing? many had to use it to circumvent the official app changes that made the app no longer work on older android phones

What don't you like about it?
There are plenty. Boost is my favourite.

I was going to ask, what weather apps do y'all use?
Do you think people will still go to University in 10-20 years
I can only speak for Australia, but I think the value has been lost over decades
By people I mean people at large,
"Do highschool exams, go to university, get a job" isn't the reality anymore
I think they'll have to. It's already at the point where if you don't, you're at a disadvantage compared to those that do.
In some places, getting a second degree is normal just to stand out.
But that's a sign of "degree inflation"
due to natural evolution I believe we will be hit with another pandemic in a few decades. i could well be wrong but I think universities will more likely work via broadband internet than people going to it
I studied remotely. Worked out okay for me.
There's plenty of people who went to trade school who are outearning their school peers who are under or unemployed after university
That's the thing... in a lot of places, there aren't 'trade schools'. It's leave school and try to find a job, or go to uni and try to find a job.
A lot of countries don't have a vocational stream for people that want to get into trades instead of academia.
Our universities have become centres around "exporting" to international students so a lot of them are quite poor quality in reality
The UK is terrible for that. Our Labour party made a huge push to get everyone to go to uni. Stupid target like 50% or something. Now everyone has a degree and they're less useful for identifying good students.
I never went to university and I'm out performing a lot of the grads in my company
Granted, a ton of people go off and do shit like media studies 😂
Yeah, I don't think my degree made a difference. It was fun and I'm glad I did it but I could've gotten and done this job without it.
I mean hard sciences like medicine and engineeering you need it
Another dev on my team studied geology and then became a software engineer... so his degree didn't matter either.
But he's got 20 years on me, so back then, having a degree was a sign that you were bright enough to learn difficult subjects.
Now, they're almost participation awards.
it's still a job requirement regardless if it's useful or not. not to mention like here that degree is the diffrence between being paid one thing vs another
Depends on the company
What jobs?
Laws that enforce which bit? Needing a degree or paying more?
laws that enforce you being paid x amount dependant on degree(s) you have
or you are a genius, go self employed, f* universities and still make billions with your idea
Some companies pay based on qualifications, but they're often doing themselves a disfavor
It's certainly only a company policy not a law though
I can't speak for Murica though
I'm a self taught developer
I know I'm not a Murican but I'd never heard of this... and some jobs that claim they need a degree seem to pay awfully low salaries...
And i see a lot of the grads coming out of comp sci and software engineering and I'm like whelp
So if someone can get a degree and still be a useless dropkick
What's the value in the accreditation
From an employers perspective
For stuff like CompSci, I guess it's just that employers should be able to count on you having a well-rounded understanding of the fundamentals. Doesn't mean you'll be a great dev though.
it's been like that here for a long time
course the degree has to have some correlation with the work you do
That seems like a fault with the course then, not the concept. My course had a decent chunk of practical coursework too, so it wasn't just a case of memorising answers for exams.
Even the exams were basically handwritten code... 🤢
I think it's systemic in Australia
the point is there though, a lot of young people have no idea what the practice is all about but at the same time can talk a lot meta bs about the subject
Our universities are dropping their global ranking because they're run poorly and gaming the system to become part of the visa factory
private universities are a cancer.
They're not private though
But they charge international students more and they get most of their funding from them
So they've lost their guiding mission
I'd be hesitant for my kids to spend 5+ years and what will probably be $250k by then at University
kind of funny, my niece went to australia for a year or two cause it was cheaper lol
no idea what she went for or anything like that. just remember her mom having to send her money from time to time
I've thought about going to university part time just to do it
But I'm like, I'm already in the industry
Yeah, not worth it if you're already in.
I feel like I'm better off learning the comp sci material myself
I graduated after I'd found a job... only finished because I was nearly done already.
I mean... if you can identify gaps in your own knowledge, you don't need a structured course. The only real benefit of a degree is that someone else has planned out a curriculum for a subject you probably didn't know much about.
yea if there is no benefit i can see it being a waste. here tho there is always the reason of getting paid more for doing it. but to be honest not sure the price of the schooling vs what you gain in salary ever fit unless you know you will be with that company for a very long time i guess
here tho there is always the reason of getting paid more for doing it
I still don't see how that's true. If you get into software engineering, you're going to be paid handsomely anyway, with or without a degree.
Six figures over there isn't hard to reach in software.
it's probably more lucrative over one trade vs another for sure
Do people really need to sink themselves into tens of thousands of dollars of debt first? Nah.
Yeah, maybe there are trades where it makes a difference.
I can only speak for software engineering. I don't pay attention to others.
Destined for hass on a pi4 for a buddy
Ah fuck did I buy the wrong drive
I did didn’t I
It’s gotta be sata not nvme
lol
nice
I would recommend https://www.home-assistant.io/blue/ when trying to buy a complete thing for someone other thn myself
Yea but I wanted to try this argon case and board
I am considering the blue for myself. Just so I don't have to think 😄
Laws🤔 which laws?
@forest edge no, did you ?
Germany got them for most civil service positions
and some unions regulations can work out that way
More money for going to college?
strict pay requirements by degree. There's a mapping between college degrees and craft certifications (which contain a lot of theory here)
If you've been doing something for 15 years and made sure to develop in that field, a bachelors isn't going to upgrade your pay
But if you've not done anything in the field, or go up to PhD level (which takes 8ish years, so yea...) then pay will increase for the academic degree
dunno if it's under the labor act or what but it's been a thing for like many many years
well your always talking about going to new places trying new shit. that place made it on the news. one for having some celebrity endorsement and then again because of possibly having to shut down and thier patrons raised over like 60k to keep them afloat duiring covid
I read about it. Haven't been to that place
the clip i watched one of the reasons they were thinking of closing down was cause people were ordering like over $700 worth of food, going to pick it up and then disputing the charge a week later fucking the establishment out of both the money and food. was something that just kept happening over and over
Still watching YouTube I see 🤣
always
that sounds like they didn't have their asses covered. Do they not have some kind of receipt they keep on their side? o.0
Depends on the card used, you can dispute anything.
the establishment would have to have some kind of proof the client actually obtained the product in question
in order to hve a dispute denied
you can dispute it. But a business should be able to proof their side of transaction and keep their money for most legit cases
You can even dispute on service.
Uh, no.
uh no what
Guaranteed wages for college degree.
not sure what your going on about. you get paid more for having a degree in said occuption vs not having a degree
it has always been that way
You said there were US laws that enforce higher wages for college grads.
uh
not exactly what I said
I said what I just typed a few seconds ago lol
and yes it is backed by law
But it just isn’t
had to deal with it several times over my occupation carrer lol
well aren't you from the south? maybe your back ally state rejects it even if it is a fedral thing
Lmao...the only federal law I am aware of surrounding wages is the minimum wage. Maybe that’s what you were fighting about 🤣🤣🤣🤣
well if that is the only law you are aware of then maybe we need to up your education resources 😉
a degree might help 😛
Ok, I will let you live in your little world.
you havce always been paid more for having a degree in the field you work. you get paid more for obtainign a degree in said field even if you already work in said field
that has been a thing since like. i don't even know. before I was born
I don’t disagree with that but there are no laws that guarantee it
there is, i just remember what it's called
I’m with pd here. No idea what you’re talking about
if there was no law then people who paid for an education vs those who didn't would be placed on the same wage scale and that isn't fair
it's not something that is usually brought up
unless you are working within field that gives you opportunities to go to school for the field you are in
believe what you want
i don't really care lol
Fair is for the playground
Cut throat discord 🤣
if you work somewhere that has a decent HR department, go and ask them
they are a thing?
I don’t want to get laughed out of their office, that’s why
or afraid to find out you are the lowest paid person there and even the janitor gets more lkol
I already know I am the highest paid employee in my office at my level.
I am the senior janitor
now you can fall under an over qualified status where you don't make more dependent on your educational status. that is a thing too
but to go from no degree to a degree in the field you work always yields more and that is backed by law
ha, that's easy when you got insight into part of the pay-table
I'm clearly not the best payed 😂
my friend who is a mechanic used every aspect of that to it's fullest
dude was too smart to be a greese monkey
Ok...night night Sonoma
sorry to blow your southerner mind. don't worry i am sure you GED is plenty for whatever your occupation is.
there isn't a job today that doesn't put forth it's educational requirement prior to hiring a person and most people who are already employed and get promoted into a position that required a cert or whatever the company not only pays for that education but also the pay raise so it's not something that generally comes up. however in the past it was a bigger deal because people would be working in a position that would change to something that would require an educational cert or degree would often get screwed
100%. Still no law that requires it
lol don't get why you have such a hard time with it
it seems like this has gone: "it's the law" "what law?" "go ask the HR dept"

burden of proof is on the claimer
such futile dispute isn't worth the headache
🤷
make baseless claims, get called on it
I'm happy to become smarter, but if the answer is "go Google it, it's your job to find what I'm talking about" 🤷
or believe what you want
indeed. without evidence to the contrary, yes
I actually like the "google it yourself" response. if someone is inclined to dispute something they themselves have no idea about googling it could educate them far more. like HA rule set about try and find the answer yourself..
that's not usually how claims go
you get that, right?
not my job to prove you right
I get that these conversations are not usually that formal. people make up thier own minds what to believe and what not to believe. not our job to educate them when they choose to disbelieve something, if something means that much to them then it's thier own duty to seek out the truth
pretty much the same reaction when someone in here disbelieves something someone trying to help them is saying. it's at that point to just step back and let that person find thier own way. which is my suggestion on this very point
P.S. - I have been googling for the last hour and have found nothing
atleast you are trying
equal pay act goes back to the early 60's if i recall and there is a whole mess of shit inhbetween

pessimist
what? there's all the reason to be pessimistic about employee protection in the US D:
thats not very nice
it's not meant to be 😂
the fact that feds don't overrule at-will employment states alone is reason enough to not be nice about US employment regulation

it's one thing for the cali to make those remarks but you attempting to do it with that straw sticking out of your mouth and confederate flag on the wall behind you just dosen't work.
besides don't you have to go get in line for gas rather than debating rather if people who pay for education should be backed by us law or not on their right for equal pay?
equal pay has nothing to do with what you are claiming
low pay? git gud
and there's a rather big difference between should and is
did you take all the straws from pdo to build that strawman?
most git users shouldn't be in the low pay category
I had to learn how to squash

interactive rebase is an important skill if you want clean histories
yeah
Imho, anything contrary to performance based pay just builds a lazy over paid workforce
I'm personally not a fan of hourly, I'd prefer if they mapped it to projects
But anything decent is a lot of work and hard to do.
So we have some aproximation and some guesswork. Unless they are poaching you, your new employer isn't going to have any idea of performance before a couple months into the job
It’s pretty easy to see if people are hard workers or not....you can usually tell within the first couple weeks....can you not get fired for poor performance where you live. While any company can fire you at will here (I think, I am not 100% on that) the fact of the matter is anyone can sue anyone for anything and wrongful termination is a very real thing g here
Actually a little google proves me wrong.
so dependent on google these days
Is my situation a classic example of wrongful termination? Find out from our in-depth guide explaining exactly what you need to know.
can you not get fired for poor performance where you live
no
like, not at all?
Wow, so what is your experience? Lots of hard workers or lots of lazy people?
or "there's a whole lot of prerequisite steps"?
if it's to the point of not doing any work, it's a breach of contract and fair game
i would imagine or holy shit 80% of the work force is shiet
I think the US puts far too much emphasis on individual employee productivity
not to mention most jobs don't require a contract lol
automation's a comin'
a mix? I'd say we have more people working hard than slacking
And a couple that just don't align their work with "work" which makes outcomes iffy. But that's a management mistake in most cases
But this is my first job, so the sample size is tiny.
At my uni jobs, things were different. But that's academics
What else is there?
verbal agreements can also be contracts
But in this case, employment is actually the single contract category that's required to be written here
employee productivity is highly subjective to the job
and also not a really good "catch all" metric
if you only measure a person's worth by what value they add to shareholders, you're doing it wrong
*worth to the company
same thing for a public company
i mean in some apsects it makes some sense
eh
If you provide no value, why else should they pay you?
it's cheaper to cycle employs then to restructure the job
