Was not mine when it was rented out

#

I got it from the guy who was doing it

lapis cipher

some do it when they lose dmx control, many ways but they are mostly broken because the user didn't do it properly

#

ie. power off, cold and blind

sleek bear
#

yes, this one does the cleaning too when losing dmx, but it can also run without dmx

#

the HZ-100 is more tricky... there is only one way to power it down, and that is just to kill it...

lapis cipher
#

we have one nice device which screwes up the dmx network when connected to it, at some point, it kinda works over dmx but..

Using a raspberry pi with pygame to run the ambient rain as a constant background music, then mixing the different sounds in on top of it

#

Also added so it could control dmx, so if it found a .dmx file in the same directory as the .wav file, it would start another thread and run it in parallel of the sound file

#

so it was possible to use strobe only for when the lightening sound was triggered

hollow glacier
#

@sleek bear i might want to pick your brain about a project that just landed in my lap

#

2 snow cone trucks that need a shitload of LEDs on the outside

#

i've added them to my house before using the WLED firmware with arduinos and ws2812b strips..

would i need a giant cap between battery and strips to not kill the battery?

aluminum diffusers for heat dissipation?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6wD-qMT-ys Here it should look like a greenhouse, filled with plants and actors in planlike clothes and plantlike makeup. When entering the light is on, sound is pleasant and nice. When an actor presses the trigger it will fade the light out while fading to a more hostile sound while the actors also gets hostile. Thatโ€™s a neat project

We have scripts to turn on/talk about (tts) each computer. so the automated tour runs them in order with a wait for the media player to change from playing in between.

green inlet
#

Are the waits configurable? For say, if someone has a question and you donโ€™t make it to the next station in time?

we don't use FTTx when we talk about it. the term fiber for us is anything 1gup/dn+ and cable/broadband for anything lower than that

deft pewter

So you use fiber as a marketing term instead of to talk about the material used?

forest edge

pretty much

deft pewter

Fiber's been around here for ages, just not as far as the home.

forest edge

I guess we all been on FTTC since like forever, but a few optional choices would bring it to FTTN but again it's murky because for residential coax can bring the same speeds so it would be FTTC to coax but with gig+ speeds.

Hey all, what do you guys use to monitor your stuff at home? Any recomendations? Been meaning to get round to it but a bunch of stuff failed today an I only noticed when I could not get to HA (proxy was down). Looking for something to monitor basic stuff like if urls are available, are containers running, results from sql queries, output from scripts etc.

deft pewter
#

monit here

#

Runs on the host, so the only thing that'll stop it sending to me is if the host/internet go down completely... in which case, there's not too much I can do without setting up external redundancy.

#

I probably should, I'm just too lazy.

noble pivot
#

Thanks. I was thinking of something external to any server without the need for installs on each machine (cos i'm lazy). So no "agent" on each box. Was going to try out zabbix. Thought I would see what others use.

deft pewter
#

Something external won't help you figure out if containers are running or SQL queries work ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

I'm sure you could do monit on just one box, since you can give it custom commands to reach things on your network.

clever mortar
#

Zabbix works well, but anything requires some form of agent for effective monitoring

#

"agentless" usually means that it SSHs on and runs commands ๐Ÿ˜„

deft pewter
#

Sounds safe.

clever mortar
#

Eh, if it's a problem you've got bigger problems ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Also, that's pretty much how Ansible works

noble pivot
#

Was wondering whats wrong with ssh

deft pewter
#

But you run Ansible knowing that it can provision anything. I wouldn't want a monitoring tool to have the same capabilities.

clever mortar
#

It's more fragile since things may not work the way the monitoring tool expects

glacial knot
# deft pewter Sounds safe.

it's best when they then call sudo -S on the target system, because they got no idea how to properly escalate permissions

clever mortar
#

Agents are more likely to behave in expected ways

glacial knot
#

which reminds me, I need to tell my PM that I'm throwing out that software, if they haven't fixed that yet....

clear ferry
#

Don't mind me, I fat fingered a random gif

deft pewter
clever mortar
#

I do it all the time, but I blame history and the su command...

deft pewter
#

I just don't know any better ๐Ÿ˜„

clever mortar
#

I technically know better, but I'm lazy

glacial knot
#

if you don't put that in scripts that are going into production, have fun

#

but don't sell a solution that uses it internally

deft pewter
#

People use that in scripts? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

clever mortar
#

Well, yes, of course

#

Because... that's easier than sane options

noble pivot
#

Ha, peeps will use whatever works (no matter how bad it might be)

deft pewter
#

What's the 'sane' option? Assign the script the right user/group?

clever mortar
#

Still, at least it's better than writing a script and making it setuid and group writable

glacial knot
#

have a service, or work with polkit pkexec or similar

#

is script setuid a thing now? last I knew shebang resolution doesn't work with setuid

clever mortar
#

SUID scripts have been around for as long as I've been using *nix

#

So.... "a long long long long time"

#

I "may" have used that kind of oversight to escalate accesses in the past... like when running a printer driver installer ||HP||

glacial knot
#

ah right. solaris does it. Maybe atx's loved hpux does. But it's not portable to do that

#

Does the kernel clear (or the shell solaris uses?) stuff like PATH on suid?

static schooner
#

get in, make SUID script that's writeable, get out, modify, profit
