#

Well, it's technically possible

deft pewter
#

Can I run HA on my washing machine?

clever mortar
#

The HAOS images are well hidden, but if you're a determined idiot you can find them, or go down the Supervised route I'm sure

#

And hell, it's not the daftest thing people have asked about running HA on lately...

forest edge
#

I thought I read something where they made it so it wouldn't try and run on those unsupported pis

#

I could be mistaken

clever mortar
#

Well, the Pi0 (and Pi2) images for HAOS are still there shrug

forest edge
#

gross

clever mortar
#

I wish they would just remove them

#

Then again, folks would install Raspbian, run the Supervised installer, and whine about how their install says Unsupported

#

But the video said I could

forest edge
#

lol

#

in very limited scenarios I could see a "lite" version for like a pi0 but certianly nothing worth "supporting"

clever mortar
#

Eh, unless it's so far stripped down it's not HA any more...

#

They work - for some value of work - for things like monitor and Zigbee2MQTT

#

At least if you connected wired networking

forest edge
#

yea nothing that couldn't be done through python or whatever

deft pewter
#

If you're working with something that's almost as basic as an ESP, might as well learn to do real embedded stuff.

#

Even if you don't want to write C/C++ yourself, ESPHome/Tasmota are plenty good enough.

bitter pawn
#

@last cedar i need confirmation.

nova rune
#

Just a thoughts like that after the live party... One day we should ask homies partners what automation they love the most... Somehow I think my wife is not particularly excited about smart home but she definitely appreciate few automations. And it would give a nice view on what automation are not pure hobby but for large public... Is that stupid ?

deft pewter
#

Not stupid. A lot of us may have experienced 'resistance' from our family/friends/roommates.

#

And it doesn't really address the examples you're hoping for but there was a talk at the conference about 'acceptance factors'. You should watch it if you haven't already.

bitter pawn
#

nods

nova rune
#

Yeah I watched it and was really nice 👍

bitter pawn
#

i am one to believe that not everything on the effing planet needs to be digitized or computerized or automated

#

some things need to stay the way they are.

#

but if it can make things convenient to automate, give it a try.

#

e.g. my effing fridge doesnt need to post to twitter.

#

but having a live camera inside the fridge to see if you need more milk while at the store? might be nice.

solar spoke
hollow glacier
#

Weighted sensors but those require stuff to be precisely sat down in a spot

bitter pawn
#

yeah not sure if weighted sensors would "be better"

hollow glacier
#

Then you have like ERP options where you could scan in things and then as you use them or as dates pass they drop off

bitter pawn
#

for the exact reason you stated

hollow glacier
#

But that requires input

#

The app ‘grocy’ can do what I said above. It’s even an addon in the supervisor

bitter pawn
#

visual confirmation is better than nothing and would require next to nothing for the end user to do.

#

other than logging in to visually check

hollow glacier
#

nods and walks away

bitter pawn
#

true true

#

but requiring user input for something like that is what i think you were getting at @nova rune, its hard to predict how useful or how much of a chore something is until you do it.

nova rune
#

In my thoughts I feel that as hobbyist we see priorities differently and as I want to make smart home a default I would love to see what non hobbyist people appreciate.

bitter pawn
#

yeah the thrill of the challenge can often overlook its usefulness

hushed basalt
#

Grocy is pretty hot garbage

#

Only sane way to do a home ERP is to have an always on barcode scanner that you run items past as you buy them or when you consume them

hollow glacier
hushed basalt
#

It still uses grocy

#

And grocy is like GIMP

#

Made by people with nfi of UX

hollow glacier
#

I personally live alone so haven’t given grocy the full testing I suppose I should’ve. But I have added recipes as well as food and it seems to do what it’s supposed to. I can’t argue that the ui or ux is great though

lapis cipher
#

atmo the fridge content is probably last thing i would touch, hell no i'm scanning anything at any point, its either automated or its not installed to my house

hushed basalt
#

The fact that it uses TAB or something crazy as the barcode enter key is insane

hollow glacier
hollow glacier
#

It also can auto renew

lapis cipher
#

nope, that data needs to come from the store straight to my system, it needs to know what requires cold storage, what is each items expected lifetime and so forth

hollow glacier
#

So if you buy milk once a week or whatever it would

hollow glacier
hushed basalt
lapis cipher
#

it would only tell me something entered the fridge, that's all

hushed basalt
#

No way it will be in an open source app

lapis cipher
#

it would lose the inventory immediately somebody goes and takes something

hollow glacier
#

Re: smart homes

lapis cipher
#

i am not against of that stuff, it would just not automate anything for me really, quite the opposite force me to perform extra steps while visiting the fridge. I would have loved to get a message we're just about out of coffee since we did ran out this morning

deft pewter
#

So set up an automation for next time to make sure it doesn't happen again.

lapis cipher
#

that i was thinking a bit actually.. One could try to estimate how much coffee is brewed (based on for example amount of time coffee machine has been on or turned on), given the amount of coffee is always the same

deft pewter
#

How do you store your coffee? This one seems a good option for a scale under whatever container you use.

lapis cipher
#

This one does yes, its in the upper cabinet, has its own place so could craft something such

#

we have another machine as well, it grinds from the beans, it does have some built-in sensors (to show stuff on the display)

deft pewter
#

So you also know how much you've ground. That seems a good candidate too.

lapis cipher
#

time to make it is more than just visiting the shop several times 🙂

#

but as for a tiny project, why not.

bitter pawn
#

this is why a camera makes more sense vs. inventorying everything

#

just a quick browse, boom done.

lapis cipher
#

For the scale stuff i've been planning to weight gas bottle and see how much is left, would be useful for RV's as well as things work with the gas

#

haven't ordered the sensors yet but have them ready to click, pretty simple stuff in the end, haven't even googled if code exists already, probably

bitter pawn
#

well thats a different thing altogether.

#

but yeah. i could see it be useful in that scenario

lapis cipher
#

sure is, shifted from coffee to gas 🙂

bitter pawn
#

you arent going to get gas bottles for your RV every other week

lapis cipher
#

its difficult to estimate the gas usage.. heating, fridge, stove, grill outside, it lasts for some time but always runs out when least expected

deft pewter
#

But gas weighs nothing smart

lapis cipher
#

reminds (again), need to build the gas sensor and try it out..

Hi all - I’ve been running HA for about 2 years now, and haven’t made a change to the configuration at all since I got stuff working - just regular updates. When I started, all configuration was in .yaml and I used GitHub webhooks to automate updating the Config when I made changes in git. Anyway, it looks like the landscape has changed, and we are moving away from declarative .yaml based Configs. I’m curious where I should be looking to modernize my Config. Should I dump my git setup? I mostly interact via HomeKit on iOS, but now that life is getting more complex there are obvious areas where I want to add automations, make changes, and so on.

glacial knot
lapis cipher

yeah it is but in a healthy company with trustworthy employees its enough without any more detailed monitoring of hours

fallow karma

So as long as the firewall and modem are running, I have some level of remote access

#

Modem is on a smart plug that's programmed to automatically reboot it if the internet goes down

chilly nymph
#

That's not a bad idea

#

My issue is the firewall I'm running at the other location right now is the verizon gateway (eww, I know)

#

But I don't want to spin up a second pfsense box when I'm moving there full time at the end of June

subtle pasture
#

It basically checks to see if it can reach the firewall (because if it can, it means the it's not an internal networking problem), then checks to see if it can reach Google or L3 DNS

#

If both DNS services are unreachable for more than 5 minutes, cycle power, then suspend scripting for 15 minutes (so it doesn't try repeatedly)

chilly nymph
#

I'm assuming this is in HA

subtle pasture
#

Nah, this all happens on the plug

#

Scripted right into Tasmota

chilly nymph
#

even better

#

I need to start looking into tasmota because a lot of devices I'm interested in these days seem to be on tuya

green inlet
# subtle pasture I have OpenVPN running with cert-based authentication that I can use to get into...

This is exactly what I do and I love it. Full access to whatever I want. I also have a very high port open for ssh to a raspi so I can get around a reboot things should something go crazy. Saved me a couple times. Cert based authentication for all the raspis. One question, what do you use to tell if your modem goes down?

Edit: I guess I should have kept reading. My plug is zwave so no tasmota. Any other ideas?

subtle pasture
#

I was just about to say "you mean besides the smart plug running a script internally?" XD

green inlet
#

Yea....I got so excited that I was actually doing something at your level I got all besides myself 😉

subtle pasture
#

I also use Uptime Robot to monitor my external services ^

#

Can send me an SMS message if, say Plex goes down

#

Or if my modem just straight-up becomes unreachable from the internet

green inlet
#

Oh snap. An HAss as an official integration

subtle pasture
#

They have a free tier, which is what I'm using

#

And I have Dynamic DNS through CloudFlare, so I just have it pointed at my FQDN

deft pewter
#

Get out. We already have a server raccoon.

tame sand
#

We need a racoon role

lapis cipher
#

.raccoon

#

stupid bot, there is no raccoon role

clever mortar
#

Fixed that for you now

velvet horizonBOT
#

@lapis cipher There can be only one.

deft pewter
#

@last cedar is the one true raccoon. All others are poor imitations.

#

But if we're doing raccoon profile pics...

velvet horizonBOT
#

There can be only one.

sleek bear
#

Got a bit too hot....

deft pewter
#

The magic smoke. It escaped.

sleek bear
#

some of it did, I have a feeling the zink started to melt

last cedar
#

Oh my

#

What is it?

#

Looks like a thermocouple unscrewed?

sleek bear
#

It is a smoke machine. I was told "It is heating up very slow"... IT DOES NOT! It just does not know it is heating up...

last cedar
#

Aha

sleek bear
#

I took the thermocouple out to inspect it, and the thread was like butter

last cedar
#

Well it is defo a smoke machine now

#

Just not that sort of smoke

sleek bear
#

it smells so bad

last cedar
#

I bet

#

Like a raccoon I bet

#

Phew

#

A pungent aroma

deft pewter
#

The only kind of smoke I want in my home is bacon smoke.

sleek bear
#

I ordered a new thermocouple for it... if that does not fix it, I will probably make my own controller for that one too

#

I got another tiny super cheap smoke machine too, put an esp8266 in it with a little oled display

#

so now it got a web interface and some useful functions for a haunted house... where it never got used...

last cedar
#

I got a raccoon emoji on another server today

#

And the command here

#

Today was a GREAT day

sleek bear
last cedar
#

I realise my raccoon obscesion might be getting slightly out of hand

deft pewter
#

Raccoon master race

last cedar
#

NICE

sleek bear
#

I got the idea for this, when I found out they had a person just hiding all evening, pressing the button for a smoke machine when people passed it....

#

so in sensor mode a sensor can be connected to it, it can then start after a delay, run for the set time, then wait before it will trigger again

#

stock this smoke machine is absolutely useless

#

it is heating up for 5 minutes

#

is then ready for about a minute before it will start to heat up again

#

if you use it to make smoke, it can make smoke in 10-15 seconds, then it need to heat up again...

#

now it can heat up, and run the pump at the same time

#

instead of waiting until it has cooled down too much, then being unable to make smoke

lapis cipher
#

its rather toy-sized indeed, those do that kind of stuff

#

but nice you get somebody fired from his/her important job 🤣

sleek bear
#

Putting a better controller in it made one hell of a difference

#

Raised the operating temperature on it a bit too

lapis cipher
#

holy crap that device is under $50

#

that tells pretty much about it 🙂

sleek bear
#

yep, I said it was the cheapest I could find 😉

#

I only got it to modify it

lapis cipher
#

oh, sorry missed that, looked so small i had to look up, suppose it doesn't have dmx (did not google for specs further)

sleek bear
#

it got a wired remote, thats it

lapis cipher
#

thought so. anyways, nice tune-up

sleek bear
#

I also got an Antari Z-350, it had been a rental, so it was in a quite rough condition

#

working fine now

lapis cipher
#

depending on a machine the shutdown needs to be done properly or they are very soon not so usable

sleek bear
#

And also an Antari HZ-100, it had blocked nozzles... what a pain in the butt to get working properly again

lapis cipher
#

ie. to hint them to do the cleanup
