really wish there was a video channel where we could put in videos people made about HA. like these videos about the custom button card. guy did a good job. https://youtu.be/0wg9bdnGD00

In this tutorial I take through some of the animated icon options and how to make / create and get Home Assistant dashboard buttons to Spin and Flash - using RomRider's 'Custom Button' Card.

Easily installed through HACS, it gives you unprecedented control of many aspects of Home Assistant's Lovelace buttons.

I hate video tutorials, prefer written one. Maybe it's my bad English

Video tutorials are difficult to use, because you can't do it at your phase. I find myself constantly starting and stopping them, jumping back to see something again, searching for that point... and then the "write......." and then you have to write something off the video, instead of just being able to copy and paste it.

glacial knot
#

video tutorials have an issue with my concentration

#

I'm so used to not concentrate on any vidoe medium, that I can't follow anything that needs more than a fraction of my attention

I hate video tutorials unless it is something you have to see with your own eyes, like solder points, drilling, locating something in an engine compartment

I found this article "https://webhookrelay.com/blog/2018/09/03/home-assistant-remote-access/#Start-webhookrelayd". It is super easy to set up. I dunno how to do the normal Duck DNS stuff because i run it in docker. I didn't have to do anything with my router and it is very easy. BUT.. Is it a security risk? it runs http, but I have 2FA and strong passwords. Is this unsafe?

A question about Synology server storage: if have 5 4TB-drives and want to make a new fresh setup with 2 x 4TB Mirror (Raid-1) drives and 1 hot spare (4TB), but there is also Synology SHR. Not sure if SHR is a better choice. Who have experiences with this?

For different sizes SHR is better, but for equal sizes??

I used SHR1 with equal sizes

It's pretty horrid though

I'd look at SHR2 if you can

And make sure your backup process is tight

I wouldn't advise raid1 in general for the same reason I don't advise raid5

#

You really want at least two parity drives

I'd generally go for a filesystem level system
With different volumes at different redundancies
Since I have a lot of data that really isn't valuable
And some I don't want to lose (though that's backed up otherwise as well)

I've seen the effects of tracking cookies with adverts. It only happens when someone actually does something. I've never heard from anyone I trust that their PC was listening to them.

Those videos are just perpetuating the paranoia of all the idiots that thing the big evil corporations are eavesdropping at all times. It's nonsense.

dusky plank

I'm not going to argue with you about the video at this point ๐Ÿ˜„

deft pewter

Trust me. The way all this advertising stuff works is that they build a profile of users based on activity. It's so clever that they can detect the same profile on a new device from just a handful of site visits.

Which means, in turn, that someone with the same profile on two devices can easily 'prove' that their PC is listening to them by having someone else do a search on their secondary device off camera.

my apartment car parking is... busy

even at 2 fps, it can lag

forest edge

you got something off

my doorbell camera gets trigger all the time which is why I put it on frigate over motioneye and it hardly uses any resources

make sure you use the lowest resolution. the docs say lowering the cameras fps makes the biggest difference (I didn't do that)

#

this on a rpi3 or 4?

#

cause that would make a diffrence

#

I will say I wasn't impressed with frigates rmtp and I don't use it. still use motioneye for repiping the streams elsewhere

brisk glen
#

not going lower than 15 at the source

#

the issues would be solved with a coretel device

or not, the video feed is just too blocky at the low setting and its freaking everything out

#

I know its h264 native vbr

forest edge
#

in frigate you can set the lower res for detect and the higher res for clips/record if your cameras have that

#

also do you not mask any of that off for motion detection?

brisk glen
#

yah low res is fucked

#

and I do

#

I mask all of the trees, timestamp

forest edge
#

I would mask everything from the rear of those cars in front of your window up lol

brisk glen
#

lets try 1080 for grins

forest edge
#

all my cameras are set at 20 fps, I use 640x480 resolution for detect and 1080p for clips, kept the default 5 fps setting for frigate and not had any issues

#

another thing you could do if that camera is your biggest offender is make an automation to turn on/off the detect mode for frigate for that camera during certian parts of the day you know it will be busy and you don't really need to worry about capturing anything

brisk glen
#

meh, I just need to get a coretel stick

forest edge
#

those usb coral sticks are only 60 bucks

#

they have those mini pci ones for like 30 bucks too

brisk glen
#

but, I think I will steal its model

#

it actually works for cars parked

#

if it works great for doods, ill buy a dam stick

forest edge
#

I think one stick can handle up to like 8 cameras

#

but that is at the 5fps

brisk glen
#

oh yah, google fixed a lot of thing in this model

#

0.327451179 seconds vs 4

#

as I was using a heavy model

#

@forest edge ok, im buying a stick and ill try again, btw the stick does about 300 FPS

#

more than 8 cameras at 5 fps

forest edge
#

yea but I think there are other factors involved lol

brisk glen
#

well, I can use mutiple USB Accelerators...

#

yah, thats more than 8 cameras

#

I could do 15 fps with 8 cameras

Warrior Nun was... different. I think I was expecting more of a Hellsing vibe from it but I still enjoyed it. And Alba Baptista made watching enjoyable ๐Ÿ˜„

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I don't know what I expected, but it was fun

lapis cipher
#

i recall we discussed about pensions yesterday, i cannot remember that far ๐Ÿคฃ

clever mortar
#

Carnival Row looks good too...

deft pewter
#

I want to see Sister Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young) in more though. She's had small roles in a couple of movies but nothing notable.

clever mortar
#

Oh, and the New Legends of Monkey, or whatever it is, I started watching that and it was fun

deft pewter
#

I'm still not sure what I make of Carnival Row. Watched it all but didn't think it was anything special. Such a good premise but meh...

clever mortar
#

But then, I watched the original series ๐Ÿ˜„

deft pewter
#

Oh, shit. I remember seeing trailers for that,. Completely forgot about it... I'll get downloading now ๐Ÿ˜„

#

If you want cheesy Kung Fu stuff... they rebooted Kung Fu itself.

clever mortar
#

I've easily got 50+ shows and films across Netflix and Amazon on the to watch list

deft pewter
#

Think I've only watched the first two episodes. It won't be one of my favourites but it's okay filler.

clever mortar
#

Wu Assassins

#

That's another good laugh

deft pewter
#

Without getting drawn into talking politics in here... it's good to see Asian Americans portrayed in a positive light right now. There's obviously an antagonist... but the rest of the characters are likeable.

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I prefer to see characters than stereotypes

deft pewter
#

Indeed. And surprisingly in a show literally about kung fu, they do a good job of not pushing the 'every Chinese person knows kung fu' shit ๐Ÿ˜„

clever mortar
#

So... Ip Man ๐Ÿ˜›

deft pewter
#

Well... that's not kung fu, is it?

clever mortar
#

Nah, but it does seem at points like everybody knows martial arts of one form or another ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Still a solid movie though

lapis cipher
#

being a part of a team on multiplayer is mostly just "those half of the players won't kill you" and rest is all solo, no organization of any kind, all run randomly wherever

deft pewter
#

Just saw that Wu Assassins has Katheryn Winnick. That's definitely on my list, loved her in Vikings.

clever mortar
deft pewter
lapis cipher
#

obviously one could join a group and play together in organized way, with comms and stuff, that's actually much more fun to really look after your mate

#

yeah its the regular "multiplayer" with all random people

deft pewter
#

Very few people playing the objective, only a handful of players with any skill.

#

And annoyingly, the skilled ones usually seem to be part of a clan, practising their skills on newbies...

#

Battlefield ends up like that in random matches. If you're playing 16v16, you'll often see maybe 4 or 5 on each side with the same clan and the rest made up of randoms. It's not much fun when a small squad coordinate well and everyone else is a stranger.

lapis cipher
#

yeah. oh well, it is what it is, i am aside doing those challenges / tasks to gain some points and get some content to my playing, leveling up ain't any thing, i'd rather stay low since i suck but it just keeps collecting and is more of a indicator of time spent than anything to do with skills

#

could consider joining some clan, there are ones that take even noobies in and play for fun

#

i just can't play during the evenings too much with yelling to mic, gonna very soon get some feedback.. ๐Ÿ˜„

#

lets see, i just had a month or two break after i got totally bored, now after the last free week i spent a bit money to get the game to continue on the multiplayer

deft pewter
#

If you like shooters, have you tried any PvE shooters? Warframe, Destiny, Outriders are all good.

lapis cipher
#

no i haven't, also i'm stuck on ps4 selection of anything atmo

deft pewter
#

I just started playing Outriders and it's interesting. Looter shooter, so part of the game is trying to get better gear but there's a good mix of content and interesting fights.

lapis cipher
#

but i don't like shooting against too much of an aliens, i can do zombies but that's about where the line is drawn, too scifi not my thing

deft pewter
#

๐Ÿ˜‚

#

I don't care what I'm shooting. Just let me pretend it's my coworkers.

lapis cipher

haha me too ๐Ÿ˜„ and those french kids, they are actually real ๐Ÿ˜„

#

"die you piece of shit Jenkins master"

#

ups, politically incorrect term, controller (and nodes)

#

Also i have to keep playing to earn the missing 100 CP points since i quit playing last season just one set of points too early so now i cannot open the battle pass without money

#

it would be a whopping 10 euros for 2 months...
