You always want to install the latest firmware

Doing that first also ensures you know what to do later when it's upgrade time 😄

Aha, so it is firmware related, now I understand

I'm building a home assistant to automate part of my friends computer museum. Gonna do a demo this weekend, then do the rest. I'm using rf outlets and rf pi zeros to control the computers. Amazon dash buttons will be placed at each computer and will turn it on then tts about it. This is my 3rd home assistant and so far it's the easiest one.

Hass.io was the old name for the appliance like install option, that uses Docker. It was renamed in January 2020 and is now called Home Assistant OS (see #330990055533576204).

If you'd like to showcase that work, the forums would be a great place for it. You'll probably get a lot of people interested in hearing more about how you did it.

Ok, once I do the demo and have a partial install and more to show I will do that.

peak mountain
#

Ohhhhhh there's a huge difference in the US lol. It's kind of sad honestly, it creates so many stigmas about places that people have never been

subtle pasture
subtle pasture
#

Doesn't even need to be a good level shifter, just use 2 resistors to divide the voltage and throw a diode on there to protect the Pi.

#

WAY cheaper, and smaller, than a relay

subtle pasture
#

"No no no, we're not letting people die of COVID in the streets.. that was... a gas leak! Yeah, a gas leak!"

lofty orchid
subtle pasture
#

You could also use a transistor or MOSFET as a drop-in replacement for the relay

#

Then there are no moving parts, nothing to wear out, and no CLICK every time it operates

lapis cipher
#

i also have a relay on my table, thanks to atx, am i doing things wrong if i actually use the relay for something? 😮

subtle pasture
#

Want to use the 3.3v logic on a Pi to switch 120v AC? Relay.

#

I've also seen people use relays to operate the heated beds on their 3D printers, but I prefer using beefy MOSFETs for that

#

Maintaining a specific bed temperature with a relay = lots of clicking

lapis cipher
#

imho what's matt done is great, i hate when first thing people do is to go try to find flaws in the setup

subtle pasture
#

I mean, I'm just suggesting dropping a transistor in instead of a relay. It's less complex, smaller, more reliable, and quieter >_>

lapis cipher
#

maybe this is not the correct channel to look for anything positive 😄

subtle pasture
#

That's constructive criticism...

lofty orchid
#

It's fine lol I'm just worried about other people trying to make them with no experience. I could buy some mosfets or transistors but I'm trying to do it with stuff I have on hand

subtle pasture
#

Oh! one other issue with relays and logic is bounce

#

When the arm inside the relay engages, it doesn't stop moving immediately, which can lead to multiple small pulses going out as it bounces off the contacts inside the relay

#

Not a problem when you're turning on a lightbulb, but BIG problem when you're trying to use it for logic.

lofty orchid
#

Each setup I'm making is customized to that computer, last one I did is a packard bell. A rf outlet for power on, the off code in ha will trigger the pi and then the pi will shut it down and wait then send the off code for the rf outlet lol

subtle pasture
#

And the amount of bounce you get varies from relay to relay, and with wear, so some might work fine while others have issues. Some might start out working fine, but develop issues after a number of cycles.

lapis cipher
#

actually ran to a nice article about that relay bounce with some deeper analytics on the "phenomenom"

I'm in the USA. AT&T

Ah makes sense. I'm pulling three megabits haha

I can't believe they can market this as 5G...

deft pewter

It’s like technically you have an upload speed but they won’t guarantee any packets arrive

hoary canyon

olive quarry

I have seen some cheaper baluns.

last dirge

olive quarry
#

Yep

hollow glacier
#

Wait so what’s the end goal here?

forest edge
#

myth was a cool concept way back in the day. but needing a tuner card for each tv back then was expensive and not many homes had a central location for all coax drops either

hollow glacier

DIY IPTV?

last dirge

just put a NUC at each TV

last dirge

I said NUC because they're cheaper

forest edge

but I agree, the ShieldTV is the best Plex client I've used

hollow glacier

#

I have my shield do a notification when my UniFi doorbell is rang with a snapshot picture of doorbell ringer

#

olive quarry

I want a way to automate what plays on each tv. I have 3 different kinds and one is not even a smart tv.

last dirge
#

shields have chromecast built in

hollow glacier
#

Ok I think you’re using the wrong words

last dirge
#

you can fling whatever you want at them over that

hollow glacier

Do you mean you want the same thing synced perfectly on each tv at the same time or do you want to be able to do the same thing on multiple TVs?

last dirge
#

shields also support CEC and IR blasting to control stuff

hollow glacier
#

For IR

last dirge

they all support CEC

hollow glacier
#

Right

last dirge
#

the box itself has a blaster in it

hollow glacier

The cheap solution is raspis

#

The expensive is shields

Both require Plex and hdds full of shit

that's linear

last dirge
#

otherwise, ~30 mins or so after it's aired, it'll be available

hollow glacier

last dirge

olive quarry

olive quarry

hollow glacier

i dont see roku ever batting 100 vs a shield

#

androidtv is what all non apple tvs run now i think

so that doesnt really narrow it down lol

roku.. depending on version probably sucks ass unless it's new

lol

#

the only downside to shields is you cant airplay to them

#

you can use frencks aircast thingy to do audio

but that's not the same as full airplay2

forest edge

no but there are alot more apps for android tv to allow you to do more stuff, like camera viewing etc

forest edge

cheaper and less of a headache

olive quarry
#

👍

forest edge
#

one thing I almost did was inject video/audio on channel 3 since all my tv's have coax ran to them so I could use that channel to like display camera feeds or something but even that would be overkill considering there are easier ways to accomplish something like that

hollow glacier
#

Well MoCA is a thing

I’d rather use that vs power line if you needed Ethernet to TVs

yea, prior to set top boxes cable tv came over coax just as ota and you can actually get an injector to take any number of channels from either ota or cable. course now you would just do ota but I could still see it being useful in some limited scnearios

that is the most popular here, although I would say probably 60%+ is via fiber starting 2006 or so here

#

good old coax \ docsis all the way is basically dead, and since 2009 most installations were hybrid with both FTTH and coax deployed to new installations

#

Mostly docsis only lives in the bigger cities city core where it is too costly to redeploy ftth to old apartment complexes, and they do fttb and coax internally

#

Oh, I had to check ,we started turning off analogue transmission in 2008 for TV and 2016 for radio

#

it is all digital since

new landlines were phased out in 2009, and not possible to renew ptsn or isdn lines since 2019, with no option to get repairs on those if they fail going forward

pretty sure the only reason celsius is so vastly used when talking about device temps is cause you have a shorter number range to deal with. that or anything over the number 100 is too difficult for "some" people to phantom

The best music to any TV-series in my opinion. Only rivalled by the Miami Vice soundtrack.
The synthesizers used in this video are Roland JX-8P, Juno-106 and Jupiter-8. And a touch of Alpha Juno 2 that does the signature bass line in the climax, it's mixed pretty low though.

I've made a version that is not a note for note copy of the beautiful...

static schooner

I just don't get it, despite having read numerous "Don't get NFTs? Read this" articles.

#

the point completely escapes me

deft pewter
#

There's not really anything to get. You don't own anything. It's utterly pointless.

#

It's like an even worse version of Bitcoin. It's intangible and has no inherent value, thus it's only worth what people will pay for it.

#

At least with Bitcoin, you can trade it. Who's going to want to buy 'proof of ownership' for some non-physical thing from you?

static schooner
#

and everyone can have exactly the same thing you have an NFT for

deft pewter
#

Indeed. So there's no ownership. You've paid for a bit of 'paper' that says you're the owner of some pixels somewhere that anyone can reproduce without consequence.

peak mountain
deft pewter
#

Only in a very loose sense. Things are 'worth what people will pay' when you're talking about barter economies or traditional supply and demand.

#

There's some kind of balancing mechanism in most economies. Not true with crypto.

#

We already saw a bubble that cost a lot of people their homes because they invested at the wrong time and lost it all. There's nothing preventing that again because crypto isn't backed by anything and has barely been adopted.

#

All the proponents of crypto fall into one of two camps: invested at the right time and have done well; or hype up the other (non-existent and impractical) applications of blockchain.

#

I haven't seen any respected tech person talk positively about blockchain as a tool for anything outside of crypto... and crypto is just a bandwagon.

Dinner

#

thing is large

static schooner
#

the only gotchas have been the pinch detector, which corrodes and starts giving false flashing lights and stops the cycle, and I need to keep the track on the globe clean or it hangs up and also stops the cycle

hollow glacier
#

i guess i need to read up on it more / watch videos.. but does it like put both clumped up litter and shit in the box

#

i havent fully integrated all the things smart yet

#

it's basically a bunch of light bulbs, leds, some esphome stuff

#

no fans, blinds, door reed sensors etc

static schooner
#

Once the net connection helps empty it, I'm in

forest edge
#

if you want to use it with HA you have to get the connect model which was like an extra 100 bucks back when we bought it

hollow glacier
#

yeah

#

worth

forest edge
#

was worth it for us cause mine is in the basmenet and without the phone alerts I wouldn't know when it was full lol

hollow glacier
#

ah

forest edge
#

I wish they had a model or an option for it to make a sound when the bin was full, I would get one for my mother if they did

hollow glacier
#

couldnt you calculate how many times a cat goes in it before it's roughly full

#

and then use like some type of sensor to increment a counter

forest edge
#

the app does that

hollow glacier
#

ah

#

maybe a pressure sensor under the shit box would be good

#

lol

forest edge
#

has one, thats how it knows there is a cat using it

static schooner
#

right, there's a foot in the back

hollow glacier
#

why cant it know when the bin is full

static schooner
#

it does

hollow glacier

ooh just sound. i misread

forest edge

yea it only blinks the light or sends notification to phone if you have the app. my mother wouldn't see either so I need a sound option for her lol

San Diego and Texas have vastly different AC needs, so mine probably isn't comparable

hollow glacier
#

Yea

#

Ceiling fell down in a half bath

#

Pretty fun to wake up to at 2am

static schooner
#

I paid a total of $7K for 2 AC systems

hollow glacier
#

Nice

static schooner
#

but I run it for probably less than a month each year

hollow glacier
#

They’re quoting a 5 ton unit

#

It’s a lot to cool if they only do one

#

And return lines are basically non existent due to it being in an upstairs closet

#

So they want to move it

#

I’ve done a lot of research and think that’s the right call

static schooner
#

yeah, that jacks the price up quickly

hollow glacier
#

Other option is 2 units

#

One in upstairs closet one in attic

#

It’s fucked

#

I wanted to do it myself but it’s a really big job given the layout

#

Really big

#

each red line is a duct going to first floor

#

same with red lines here

#

and for second floor there is only a small attic crawl space

#

both ac companies were worried about how they even get ducts up there

#

like they might need to come from outside the house and remove siding

#

shit's fucked

#

😦

green inlet
#

I wouldn’t stop getting quotes till you are satisfied though....I had a main line break. First guy 17k new main line. Second guy 15k new main line. Third guy, I can scope it and if we find the leak, fix it, 750.00.

hollow glacier
#

well

#

i dont think i'll be happy with quote price regardless

#

my main issue is the second company that quoted a lower price didnt think i needed to replace some ducts

#

even after i explained my scenario

#

basically there are not enough return lines and not enough air blowing over coils

#

so it blows too cold and literally water drips out of vents

#

on top of that.. unknown to me the evap drain line was clogged for years and only half ass unclogged

#

so taht was allowing even more water/moisture to go through ducts

last dirge
#

you should do that once a year

hollow glacier
#

so over time i think the metal ducts (rigid) have literally rusted out

#

which then allows for the insulation to get wet from where rust holes are

#

which then reduces r value

#

until bam, ceiling fell

#

i've done a LOT of research and there is just no way that the existing ducts arent completely fucked

#

further, both companies want to replace the rigid ducts between floors with fucking flex duct

#

which 1. cant be properly cleaned and 2. isnt suggested for long runs due to the design of it

#

(each riffle of flex duct acts as a little baffle and slows down airflow

#

however rigid duct is 3x more expensive according to both companies

#

literally the more i learn about my setup and the option i have the more i wonder about which candle would burn the place down faster

Even if I had a crew I need an hvac person to redesign

and deal with charging it

hollow glacier

I could pay to get that done

last dirge

not very often does "I can do this myself" mean "I can do this myself better and cheaper"

hollow glacier
#

If I was replacing ducts only with the same size and it was all accessible I could do it

#

It would suck hard tho

#

But I wouldn’t try to do units

know what sucks worse than that?
