he, will tell this my daughter in a couple of years
What would be the best channel for advice on specific smart bulbs? I've got some Sengled soft light bulbs already that work great but I'd like some that can do both higher and lower color temps depending on the time of day.
wth
that is >2kw. sure you don't blow up these leds?
oh right I thought 20A input to that psu
ah, no
that's still only 500ishW not 20kW
PSU's 30A with adjustable voltage
big boi PSU is only needed due to the retarded standard rgb strip design
should really be 30 - 50V with bucks along the way
you know we have a #diy-archived channel?
yea, but everything bleeds into offtopic anyways. Cant fight evolutionary incentive structures
240V @ 20A man finna trip his breaker with led strips
lol
either that or contacts go up in fire
probably the latter
That's why we got these tho
now i just need to make it fool proof so even if someone tuggs the mains wire as hard as they can it dosnt come loose
my family has that habit.
no bueno. Im thinking zip ties at an orientation that makes it impossible to tug the wrong way
Why
If you use glue
Oh haha
I assume you are European?
swedish boi
man, power injecting this strip is gonna be a mightmare
have to inject every meter.
I feel like you are simply over complicating this
idk i really thought long & hard on the best way to go about this
everything led me back to 5V only strips. And at 5V... amps galore
I mean what amperage you trying to hit?
its a 5m run, so even if we assume a 100 mV sag/meter, its still pretty shit
20A for entire strip. ~60 mA/pixel
with a 4.75V sag at max
yea..
I want it to output a blinding amount of light
was gonna go for 144 pixel/m ones, but i mean...
80 fucking amps
il pass
any suggestion for a good bt mouse? (no dongle)
I mean might wanna start actually calculating if this + your computer + other stuff are on the same breaker you might be getting close to tripping it at this point
microsoft mouse, again
yes, but specific
Nah. Entire house's consumption is barely 2.5 kW
let me get mine...
The hell you run your stove at?
In America we have 240V 30A breakers for stove
I thought you guys used 120v
No its 240V RMS, 320 actual
We do but technically all houses have 240V
^
Idk apartments I've never lived in one
Ah, didn't know that bit.
120V for normal appliances and 240V phase to phase
or 240V if you wanna jank it up & manually connect between phases using diff outlet wires
lol
240V is basically only used for two things in America. Stove and Electric Car charging
was ideal in the beginning, but now adays everyone's got an RCD/GFCI and its no big deal
240 just hurts more before it pops
240V is better for distance tho on the street
although my apartment's ancient and dosnt have any safety besides slow fuses. Have had 3 power supplies try to kill me so far
Depends on the form factor you like, but I really, really like the MX Anywhere - it works with bluetooth or the logitech dongle, and you can pair it to and switch between 3 different devices https://www.logitech.com/en-ca/products/mice/mx-anywhere-3.html
not sure how im still here. Its the purest form of irony. Out of all the crap iv done over the years, from Xray machines to 500 kV MARX/Multipliers...
The stuff that ended up getting me was stupid chinese phone chargers
I love this field about how the grid and electricity works although I've only ever put in a light, switch, or outlet. Then again I'm 18 so life is young
im 20 lol
yea same. Spend most of my time deep diving into theory and rarily actually apply the knowledge.
Xray photography. For fun.
particle physics is ๐ฅ โค๏ธ
radioactivity is my stuff
It's just all fun man well until you shock yourself after forgetting to turn off the switch when switching a light switch photographs? lMFAO
lol
radioacivity ah I know very little except from my hs chemistry class
The us got a power sytem regulations that was outdated in the 50-60s in europe
we cant even unify our plugs @late gate
I do like how in europe your new homes are like one giant fuse
All the plugs have a fuse
It's a smart design
Might be only English tho
only something they did in uk for saving money
@formal crow your out of luck, recently deleted all of my xray images
we run 240-400V in
planning on building a new xray machine
damnnn
and divide it on 1 phase
3 phases in
Tbh I like the idea at the same time prefer my breaker box in the basement
It'll do like 1 Sv/h at 100 keV
lmfaooo
I just feel in the us its so random like wires directly in walls, metal boxes, old circuit panels etc
metal boxes?
in the 60s here it was tubes with wires here
Jesus
Thicc link
I think the us is set that 120v is not that dangerous so its not so strict
it is, just not as.
Wait wdym metal boxes @late gate
will still cause arrythmia, just takes longer
Like the box we put things into like outlets switches?
yes
Ah yeah they metal cause we use them as ground
not super safe setup
That's why we put plastic covers over them
No but it works well
the US electrical boxes look horrifying imo
and prongs that exposes the metal half in
Giant exposed rails
I just dont get it
You should see my house with it's old wiring kek
yikes
I'm scared sometimes and I have a relatively good idea what I'm doing
plastic stool and the one hand rule
You must have been high and drunk
There's one thing no ones bothored to explain online @formal crow
how does the integrated power injection leads work on rgb strips?
Does it just increase conductor cross section at the beginning? Does it connect back to the middle of the strip? Does it connect to the end?
I have no clue man
Soldering on my own wires etherway. They cheaped out on the default ones
All the big stuff uses buzz bars :)
I mean my breaker box is almost full so I barely see the bar
Only if I replace a breaker and I think that's only ever happened once
bus bar?
The ones used in big switchboards are quite chonky
Just giant copper slabs
Yes
Is basically what they are
That is all they are :D
I mean yeah but I say basically because some cause little holes or bends for clapping stuff in
But yeah, we use them in small installations too in Sweden
They are in every house in America
You have some strange stuff in America ๐คฃ
yeah our breaker box is literary three bus bars in a metal box and you clamp in breakers to the bus bars
Images needed for clarification
In america yeah unless some people get 3 phase ran to their house
Yeah we definitely don't do bus bars
We do three phase into all houses since the mid 90s
All are 3 phase (more or less) here too
Bur for some silly reason hybrid car standard is to use L1
Rather than all 3 with lower current
So you can still run into issues with load balancing/ slow charge
This statement is incorrect.
Below brakers on row 1 and 2 are the smol buzz bars :)
very niiiceee
"Throughout North America, homes are powered by 120-volt single-phase electricity. A typical residential circuit breaker box reveals four wires coming into our homes: two โhotโ wires, a neutral wire and ground. The two "hot" wires carry 240 VAC, which is used for heavy appliances like electric ranges and dryers"
So that
that looks more dangerous than america
Bro it looks way too easy to just grab it
This is atxs fusebox at home :)
We have a lot of plastic boxes here, but was advised to go metal, less risk of fire.
I think there is a great reason that the big switchboard boxes still use metal
Well, it's harder to burn metal
The fuse should do its job well before that happens, with some luck!
Probably because you don't have raccoons
Raccoons don't make great electricians, despite their thumbs
Nah, but gonna do thicker cables than I need, smaller fuses and do to industrial standards. Just to be on the safe side
Was gonna use some of those
Might as well just forgoe the fuses if using too thin cables, everything will be welded ๐คฃ
250A, that's just a few AMD systems
I use these for my raspberry pi
What the
few?
๐คฃ
Was just lying around in a room. There were some bigger ones too. 630A. Don't think they go much bigger in customer accessable areas tbh
630A at what voltage ๐ค

230 between phase and N
415 between phases
The 12kV rooms we don't go into, but the transformers don't usually have fuses in the same rooms
We only go into the rooms we need to inspect
Casually has a cable the size of my forearm going though the wall
Well. We don't go in, peer in and hope for the best
Yes
The 240mm2 cables are fairly meaty
Chonky
Defo bigger than mine
Conquering the World
Redaelliโs steel rope is the heaviest in the world! Y'all so tiny
Now this is a chonky
Yes leave me alone
It is 2c 4t
Oh
With iris igpu
Well
For some reason the temp is also wrong
Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a single cpu with 8c 16t?
Box was free, I have 100 euro in memory in it at the moment
Need to get myself an nvme
I was watching Linus' new nvme NAS 100GBs of nvme and local fiber runs ๐ฅต
I just won't count cores on the system I'm upgrading next weekend @last cedar
Only 8 sockets
8?
And 28 cores per socket
Holy
It scales to 32 sockets @formal crow
Oh, some crummy intel box?

๐คฃ
price tag?
Expensive enough when you fill it with 64TB memory
I have to pay for my own stuff, so I couldn't afford to run one of those servers, let alone buy it
Must pull like 2500W at full load?
Install 320 copies of GTA V or Call of Duty Modern Warfare on MEMORY.
I guess I'll be installing some new HPC boxes with AMD later this year, with 128 cores per socket it will get interesting quickly with 600 nodes
What is price her kilowatt in europe?
Europe is a big place...
Really depends on the country
Legend has it, there are different countries with different cultures.
5.27KVA per chassis, and 8 chassis
Yeah but there's a lot of people from different European countries here so I didn't ask specifically
Omg
In Germany it really depends if you are a company or not. As a private person around 30ct per kwh
Those poor UPSs
Last year I paid $0.0003 per kwh
Holy
This year has been more expensive
Yeah not cheap at all
I pay 19 cents per kilowatt
Yeah but we have free healthcare ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Been close to $0.05 this year so far
You meant 3ct right?
True but damn that's high
With your pile of servers
I'll take slightly higher energy costs over the risk of being bankrupted if I'm hit by a car.
@tame sand no, 0.03nok, so 0.003 USD I guess
Insurance
Ah, yes... paying for insurance so you don't have to pay for taxes. Makes perfect sense ๐
Did I mention we don't have copay here?
That's nice
We've considered a move to the States before. On the face of it, tech salaries look attractive... until you realise all the other costs that come out of your own pocket.
New Yorkers pay stupid amount in taxes...
Yeah, progressive states seem to have progressive policies ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Don't forget "at will" employment
I'd never work in an at-will state. No chance.
All the millionaires are moving to Florida
In Europe most of the time you will see "stupid amount of taxes"
And great QoL
Cause no state income tax in Florida
I lose around 42% of my income to deductions each month. I don't care because it means I get all the state benefits I need without having to pay tens of thousands for a hospital trip.
And damn... if I'm ever diagnosed as diabetic, it won't cost me hundreds a month.
What's a UK prescription cost to get filled? 8 quid a month?
what is this adults problem channel?
@clear ferry is probably going to tell is that Norway pays people to have drugs.
Norway best nation in whole world.
Yes
Even makes Glorious Nation Kazakhstan look weak.
Just move here already
Thought I'd seen the end of the Evergreen memes.
no, you did not
My job at the moment is daily trading in the stock market.
Noice. How's $GME treating you?
I didn't invest.
@mono and don't forget education. I can't even imagine paying for going to university
NYU 60k a year
delayed to may this year
yesyes
that's last year ๐
17-May
i normally file early but i'm stalling this year
What part of that means you're exempt from paying capital gains?
None, I don't pay my parents do as I am a dependent
Noice. So they're paying all your taxes for you? Must be nice.
Yup
yeah, claimed as a dependent parents get both the burden and benefits of children
but they get an extra deduction for claiming you so it usually checks out
Yeah I honestly have no clue I'm sure they happy I'm doing something productive I guess
If one of my stocks blow up tax day not gonna be fun
its only a problem when you sell
Yup that's why in December good time to cut loses so your loses can cancel some of your gains out
NYU 60k a year
Man
That number
Scholarships are big tho
Norway $50 per year for a masters
Must be nice
Should take one
Eh, my 20+ years of work experience is worth more
Certifications have their uses, but experience is generally more useful for employment once you reach a certain point in your life/career
I've gathered various ones over the years, and none of them made any actual difference
I feel like experience will teach you so much more than a piece of paper is worth and often times people lose sight of that
Certs can be good for showing that you've got a certain set of knowledge (PRINCE II, CISSP, etc), but they don't usually indicate how well you can use that
Here's the problem I see with Certifications mainly speaking about a degree tho is it's just memorization so for a person might run into the smallest issue that they haven't seen before and freak out and say it can't be done but with experience you'd know that you you've gotta take a step back understand what's going on and learn how to solve the problem at hand.
Well, sometimes. I've seen people with "experience" who couldn't think their way out of a paper bag, and people with certs only who can
Time served != experience
Agreed 100%
Still, at the start of your career, all you've got are your qualifications and the things you've done in your own time... building experience takes time that you haven't yet had
That's true but if I was the interviewer I'd be more impressived what you've done on your own time than your qualifications.
Well, as an interviewer... mostly yes
Your hobbies/etc indicate how interested you actually are, vs what you've brute forced your way through
Yup
Also, it's yet another way of weeding out candidates if you've got a stack of them
That and communication skills - all too often overlooked
Nah, grab some beer. Enough of that shifts logic with ease.
out of beer, cant buy more
Hello
still got 2 months left before im 20
Eh, i didn't even bother starting drinking beer until it was 31, I did drink hard liquors from 18 though
But I was classy
@deft pewter would have loved me in my smoking jacket with cigarillos and Laphroaig
your jacket smokes?
Should change your prof pic to marlboro man
Roland isn't far off from the marlboro man
I love you just as much out of your smoking jacket, don't worry.
He actually looks more like the Stay Puft man.

Random aside: you should all turn your space bars around, it's way more comfortable.
What kind of beer though? I've gone right off lager but I enjoy the occasional ale (amber/ruby are my favourites). I drink cocktails more than beer lately though.
Weissbier > lambic > sours > all other beers
ordered a philips 346P1CRH for using on my mac and gaming computer. hopefully its quite good
Welcome to the club.
Question: Will Aleks be happy with his new purchase?
Answer: Very Likely
Yes, it has a VESA mount on the back. I have mine on a gas lift arm... just be aware that it's a heavy monitor. The first arm I bought couldn't cope ๐
I think it's 12kg or something. First arm said it could do 12kg and clearly couldn't.
Yeah, you'll be alright
its so nice to life the monitor from the table
Yup. I'll never go back to using the stands that monitors come with. You get way more space on your desk with an arm.
Wait until you see the size of the base on that Philips ๐
you should see the samsung 49" it was so huge I felt the I just had space for the keyboard
and it was only 1200 height
so it was a weird resulution
I'm slowly reclaiming all my desk space. Changed a surround sound speaker set for a simple stereo pair. Changed my 101-key keyboard for a 65%.
I have a kidnergarden next to my office so I just use by bose headset
I am quite pleased with buying a three arm desk mount for $40
yeah I should have a dual, but I didnt think about it when I bought it
Still bought a roof mount for a fourth monitor
Loving that RGB ๐
Will probably buy one more
Also, Yubikey crew represent ๐ฅ
Im not allowed to have rgb
:p
I even bought nanoleaf to have back but was not allowed :/
I can turn it off... but I like it to know which mode the keyboard is currently in. Blue for PC, yellow for Mac (Mac and alt key switched), red for gaming (Win key disabled, some other functionality disabled).
The only problem is its no cat cable there
I cant physically get one to that room
but im thinking putting a thin fiber in the electric tube
toslink stuff?
I don't see that much anymore
shoudl fit through the 16mm tubes
not exactly that one, but something like that
I know altibox (norwegian fiber) uses very thin ends on the fiber
I bought an adaptor for it for unifi and it worked great
or should I get some fiber terminator tools for ebay
never done it before
putting a thin cat through the electric tube I think is not a good idea
Not a beer connoisseur, will try anything.
like fr idk. Buy random crap everytime. Im a monster, ik.
there are a few swedish brands im into
Lager... ๐คข
mono ๐คข
Like... lager is just something people drink because they're told they should like it.
I remember the first time I went to a pub with some older guys. I thought I had to like lager because they were all drinking it.
It tastes like piss.
Lol
You should try a nice citrusy IPA
Few hours away and all the channels have literally hundreds of messages, an LTT flood?
๐คข
is it someone with synology here?
I have a rather old one at my parents house
With all due respect: ๐คข
Please keep all the IPAs
Gladly. For every one of you heathens that don't like good beer, there's more left for me.
I am glad we were able to come to an amicable solution for all parties
You take that back! I'm not amicable!
Got a 4 bay one running raid 6. 3.2 TB
If someone mentions raid 10, il kill myself
just needed something basic for the fam photos
me too, I use raid 1
next nas will run truenas
Nice backup solution
Brave
Raid isnt a backup
That was the joke.
Couldnt tell if you were being srs lol
need to setup an offsite one and rsync between em
I'm British. I'm nearly never serious.
Not even about tea?

should be deported
I'm also a developer. I drink coffee.
In me? Never!

Sarcasm as a service.. That will make you rich..
Damn. I haven't been charging people for my sarcastic remarks.
Oh, I'd pay you lots of money for sarcasm! ๐
If anyone else isn't already watching it, I highly recommend Resident Alien. I don't normally like comedy but Alan Tudyk is great.
"She's warm, like a giant ham". Yup... quality writing.

Miuzei case for rpi4 is only 8 bucks on amazon. good deal for a case that comes with heatsinks and an active fan
those aluminum blocks are also 8 bucks and do not become noisy with time ๐
I mean, they can get to 50C, but that's no issue for me
That's not that far above ambient. Sounds fine.
Think I need up grade my GPU after the scalpers and miners stop screwing around... bloody thing gets up to 70 ๐
Clung-Clung!
thanks for that

@deft pewter cool shirt
You like it? I made it myself.
Got this killer deal for 25$
4 pi 3/4's with heatsinks for all major components and fans
Couldn't you just get a small plastic tub and some mineral oil?
Sarcasm 100
Actually no. Used up all my mineral oil for Sodium storage
that and my 200 kV multiplier
when you need more power for cooling than computing...
I wasn't being sarcastic this time. I thought mineral oil was pretty good for passive cooling?
i would prefer that mineral bath any day over this tower ๐
its for looks
all im running on em is unbound & pihole, wireguard and homeassistant
it's the hifi rack aesthetics
That's a lot of Pis for stuff that could run on one.
thought about that
I once ran 23 containers on one pi
now I run 23 containers on 3 pi's in cluster config
went over my options. ProxMox, Hypervisor, Docker.. etc.
redundancy & simplicity won
and i STILL cannot max out these 4gigs. have no idea why people buy the 8g
I have about a dozen containers running on my NUC and I'm at 2.3GB RAM used.
That includes HA, a DNS server, AdGuard, media stuff...
Desktop usage (which consists of heavy web browser usage) mostly
might go for a 2U and run containerize. But then again i want the plug & play homeassistant shit.
Modern browsers use a fuck-ton of RAM
What on earth is containerize and what's wrong with just using Docker Compose like a sane person? ๐
You must be getting serious referral $$$ on this pi cases ๐ or are you minting them out in the barn ?
containerizeโข๏ธ
yeah I know that but I have yet to use a Pi as dekstop. inflation must hit big time until this gets considered
Never said that compose is bad
like everything good that "comes from california" it comes from somewhere else first
You asked, I answered. Doesn't mean the use case has to apply to you ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Or another fab factory fire
@forest edge easier to refine the wheel ๐
but I have to say, running pis over pxe without any storage is working ๐ for clusters
Unfortunately that's Midwest US. Shit like that never goes on the coast.
obviously, all those nudist and surfers would get ran over..
Nudist? I know you watch Hollywood all day but don't believe everything you see on TV. ๐คฃ
oh please, you gonna try and tell me that some don't streak across the beach?
Hmmm not in Santa Monica, Malibu Venice. That would be a serious problem
as opposed to what? every other problem there? lol
This would be a SERIOUS problem. ๐คฃ
homeless need to take baths too you know rotf
You should come and join me on weekends at the soup kitchens. I know you are so worried about the homeless in LA. Time to do something about your aching heart.
noway, we finally got rid of ours by shipping them to you. time for me to enjoy the peace
Damn just noticed that I had little too much to drink.
if you think about it. California is the best state for them. i mean your rich history of "caring" about stuff is known lol
Always sharing the love you know.
all the way to the doctor and again back home with prescription creame...
That's how you share the love in KC?
my cousin was stationed out there and came back every time with an std..
i men .. lol
never did have the heart to ask if he caught anything uncurable
think it was gonorehea both times or gono and crabs lol
I think you need to reevaluate your family ties.
You're not wrong. I'm literally afraid to travel to a lot of other states because I know I have it so good in California >.>
Even when you do go to the other states people are like "why did you leave you have it so good there"
That's one of the more-tame possibilities
I agree.. Most states are like another planet.
@shy comet how's the weather back home ?
a lil chilly today
Chilly is good ๐
yea been overcast all day pretty much
4 more hours to land, can't wait. Things are back to almost normal in NY. Hit traffic after 1 year. Lol
yea now that everyones getting vaccinated everyone is getting out again lol
Smarthome diy
yea going out, catching and creating new strains and passing those along to everyone else lol
Looks like the back of my switch boxes
But seriously why so many tied off cables damn
hell yeah
lol, I just realized a ton of shit's going to break when they disable my AD account
Lots of user scoped credentials for services?
Good mornin
I'm reasonably sure several key services at my previous employer are still running under the same credentials they were 5 years ago. lol
gm
Good morning,
I have a question about on how to sync time on a D1 mini esp32 with HA on reboot.
I am not sure where to ask, so i put it here, hoping you guys can tell me on which channel i should pose my question.
(since here it is off topic...)
Channel topic says if you don't know, ask in #general-archived - but in this case more #diy-archived
That said, HA doesn't have any NTP service
thank you sir! i will change to #diy-archived with my question.
Thanks!! :)
Anyone have a good tv that they can recommend?
I want to get a smart one but thereโs so many brands
I'm usually a sony fan for tvs but got a LG Cx lately
Iโm really just looking for color accuracy and integration with HA
panasonic 65hzc1004
I have had an LG 65" for 3 years, been happy with it
don't use the built in apps though
The color accuracy on my current tv sucks
but use it for notifications
Oh it can do notifications?
yes, in the corner of the screen
someone is at the door
washer is done
hacontainer is the best installation method
unfortunately no camera.play support ๐ฆ
but i think no one has
those with built in cameras
LG looks good on color accuracy
LG makes most of the worlds panels afaik
media players like Kodi can do camera.play
I like the Panasonic image processing
Wait TVs have built in cameras?
I don't use the tv remote anymore
Does it have a full remote I can control with HA?
me neither, atv remote and ps with cec
atv + ps4 + ps3 + xbox one + xbox 360 + switch here
with cec
I use one remote
and consoles get turned on when I press the controllers, so
ARC has sometimes a little issue for me with a panasonic soundbar, everything else works fine
I have no use for the ARC anymore, used it with the roku, but now everything goes through the 4k reciever
Samsung and LG make good panels but there image processors are sucks with the quality and upscale/rendering
all my upscaling happens in the onkyo anyway
samsung actually enters the oled panel market this year
I like my oled but I also know that they will be not so old as my prev tv. The brightness are pretty bad after 5 year
i turned brightness all the way down when I got it. was way to bright for me anyway
Hmm nvm the webos version of the tv I want doesnโt really exist
Yeah. my bedroom TV is at 5 brightness
Or it does but itโs much more expensive
I have webos2
works for everything I need
I would rather not get an Apple TV
Using the smart functions by itself would be better. Why connect a hub to a hub
I have a hue gradient, I don't use any tv apps either
if you bought a brand new one today, you aren't guaranteed it will have workable apps in 3 years
What about the tv remote functionality?
that stupid rakuten tv app ๐
My current Samsung tv only works with HA using the power button and volume
there's no proper media_player for any of the commercial tvs...
just use external players, those can camera.play your front door cam when the doorbell rings
sรญ
That is sick. Howโs the latency time?
practically none
Wow. What doorbell you use?
depends on your camera / integration though
homemade setup, zwave switch as trigger, analogue camera connected to rpi which transcodes to h264
I am about to get a new doorbell as well, I currently have one of those Hikvision ones
Z wave switch as trigger thatโs why itโs so fast lol
How does it look though? Does it look good?
it's a peephole camera, you see no difference to other peepholes
Oh smart
Iโve seen those custom WiFi tasmota ones drzzs has
I was thinking of trying one of those
But they look ugly lol
If only there was a diy smart doorbell that looks good
you're entering #hardware-archived or #cameras-archived
Im going to start sorting.... maybe tomorrow... sometime
@crisp sapphire As a computer is twice as fast with RGB, your house is now worth twice as much. I have spoken
The lady in the shop thought I was crazy buying 60 container boxes
put it in a diffuser, kevin
RGB RGB RGB!
Thats an HDR shot btw
its so goddamn bright it triggers every singal color channel on the CMOS
It sucks that there's no addressable RGBCCT strips out there ๐ฆ
Now I can't decide what to run at the cabin. Can one survive in the woods without RGB?
yeaaaaah, that might be a bit much to run on solar power. Actually it would be brighter than the sun
Im 10000000x a 3090TI with my RGB mouse and keyboard
RGBCCT is such a pain in the ass. be better to go with two strips next to each other anyways
I always ended up with RGBCCT controllers be 2 ch so you have to choose
much more fun with adressable
sad man
me playing back 360p on a 4k display
Only 3440x1440 here but it's the perfect aspect ratio for cinematic stuff. Looks frigging ugly when watching older 4:3 stuff at 360p ๐
Yeah I'm thinking of running a 12V CCT for normal lights and 12V addressable for some fancy effects, but it seems so unprofessional
Just btw there's so many devices on my 2.4Ghz band that I get absolutely sad speeds to my local media server. The only band I can access in my backyard is 2.4Ghz but it's so congested by old devices and smart home devices
Which is how I end up at 360p on a 4k display absolutely awful to watch
802.11b old?
Either that or download the file and go watch it
Tbh idk I never checked it's just my isp's router/ac/switch combo
I just know there is a good damn reason I have 10Gb wiring setup in my house to major devices
Also my house is a double brick house so not only one wall of bricks which is already bad there is two. So just mega Fs everywhere with wifi
wifi
atx level bad wifi
Vmware or virtualbox for testing?
kvm
kvm on a desktop?
kvm on all the things
they have a GUI for config
GUI's... ๐คข
I prefer the CLI myself
vim or bust.
hehe
no serious, is vmware still better than virtualbox for just testing
I dont want to clutter my os with test stufff
though the homeassistant dev env is using virtualbox only I guess?
do I smell support questions?
support, no
its a general question about virtualizaition
I just happened to think ha had something container stuff
kvm and docker is all you need
frigate is working quite well. Picking up package at home
video also, but font want to spam too much
It correctly matched a cat too. Fun to have full control
gonna mount an airhorn
A concealed airhorn, so they wonder where the hell the sound came from.
yeah
I cant believe that cat dare to go there with two huskies in the yard
they can easily jump that fence
The important question
only thing frigate is stupid at is it think my dog is a bird while poopping lol
What is the cat called?
hopefully it WAS called something
Not your cat!?
no
Omg
Its just the AI that picked it up
your automation needs to turn on the Raccoon Signal
Yes
That must be one ugly dog ๐
My camera system will have a raccoon detection system
haha, shut :p
Can we see the picture where it called it a bird?
yeah
This is a pooping bird dog
actually that cat seem to go there every night. frigate manage to catch it in IR too. impressive
I am having a 93% wheelbarrow moment
A what? ๐
whats wrong with the wheelbarrow?
Wheelbarrow is sus
haha, the gay neighbours playing "this boy is a bottom" on full blast to annoy the homophobic neighbours
its quite catchy
I like your neighbours
its getting around 10c in the shadow now
10 more and im happy
we all root for @clear ferry tomatos, even if I think its "tomatos"
I dunno. They sound a bit gay.
I am a lot gay
So Aleks neighbours sound wonderful
We still love you.
I hang up the gay flag during pride
so no issues from me
even my 70 year old neighbour asked me to buy a flag so they could put it up
That kind of acceptance is heartwarming tbh
Not everyone is so accepting. I was let go from 2 jobs for being trans
But I have a great job now, so that is the silver lining
I could have still been at those bad workplaces, and probably been miserable
people are who they are without judgement
you know the funny thing is the owners of my old house is SO anty gay, and the google maps car drove past our house with a BIG pride flag on a flag pole. Now they have to live with street view with their house with a huge pride flag
if anybody needs a script to make kvm/libvirt machines start on WOL to their respective MACs:

๐คฃ
thats what I call karma
Finally installed Home Assistant again in my house after a year
Whats the first automation?
blueiris has native deepstack support now ๐
For some of you who know I had cancer I got some PM from people saying im slacking off not working. Take this amount of meds and try to work. So stop being ignorant and educate yourself!
The only thing that sucks more than you getting cancer is that people try to say you are slacking because of it โค๏ธ
I didn't know people can be that scummy, but it's the Internet... Fuck em
Luckily Im not affected by A-meds (oxycotin, morphine etc) so Im allowed to drive. Normally you would not be able to use a bicycle on this meds
you don't have to put on the red light
@last dirge had. you never really get rid of the problems afterwards
The white just hurts like hell to look at
roxaaaane
@late gate that's good, but also bad
@crisp sapphire Red light district? :p
;)
neighbors be like ๐
think i grossly underestimated the resistive power losses
strip and wires are damn toasty
ran full white for a while. Supply was pretty toasty aswell but no current limiting or thermal cutoff
what is the strip connected to?
30A 5V
strip pulls ~75W without accounting for heat loss. With heatloss its probably closer to 125W
Yes. Im not worried as its got a thermal cutoff and is rated for 30A which gives me a 36% margin for things like heatloss
strip is rated 18A.
Then I wouldn't worry about it getting a bit warm. Get a ir thermometer to check out how hot it get if you are worried
haha. Warm
was ~60C on the outside
o well. 90C is pretty cool for power fets
and i doubt the inductor/transformer will break a sweat at 100C
it's more about things that can touch it that would worry me
Yea no thats not an issue. Iv added tripple redundant measures
alright
impossible to yank, reach or touch
Not the finest of jobs. But hey, ducktape fixes everything
Challenge Accepted
that ducktape will be nasty in no time on that wood floor and also the couch
Are... are those stranded-core copper wires screwed directly into terminals O.o
they look solid to me
If I remember correctly, you're only supposed to use screw terminals on solid core. Stranded is supposed to be crimped into a spade connector first
They look too flexible to be solid... also, those splices...
If they're stranded, I hope you did a proper lineman's splice under the electrical tape >_>
oy vey
you're practically inviting raccoons
Couch will be covering the entire setup with 1 cm of clearence
Just trying to keep you from starting a fire man <_<
You also have very little isolation between HV and LV on those 12v PSUs
Iv messed with mains since 2010
You literally have 120v AC zip-tied to 12v DC
ik what im doing and then some
An electrician would take this out back and shoot it
With double insulated wire and the ground connected
would have to somehow make contact and than bypass fuse. No way
Strictly speaking, you removed one layer of insulation, and have zero shielding
I guarantee you have some fun 60Hz noise on your DC now
Nope
Well, at least there's that
It took some man handling to bend
its all insulated with thicc plastic
no, i mean double insulated as in there is a slim plastic sheet between the metal box and the wires
its such a beefy supply that it dosnt much cooling
I was referring to the part where A) the AC screw terminals are RIGHT next to the DC screw terminals, and B) you have unshielded DC next to unshielded AC.
All it would take is for one wire to pull out slightly, and kzzrt
And with how stiff those cables are, that could happen when you slide the sofa back against the wall
lol ig you havent seen the clerence on modern day supplies. I see no safety hazard in having standard mains wiring next to LVDC when its properly insulated, which i deem this to be
and trust me, ik my insulation. Iv made so many high voltage devices over the years and used all sorts of crazy tricks to insulate
I've seen those supplies used on 3D printers all the time, they blow up constantly. lol
They're not super well made
I've had one blow up on my printer, as well
no i mean the proper CE marked ones like an apple chager
Sub 3 mm air gapped insulation
thats it
And you keep ignoring shielding, but aight ๐
Had 3 cheapo ones try to kill me. Not mine, other ppls
Im just horribly unlucky with cheap chinese phone chargers
If I need a PSU in that form factor, I stick to HP 1U server PSUs. They're... a lot nicer, and have a TTL interface for software control.
And you can get 1200w ones. lol
Eitherway, if all else fails. The mains wires touch the LVDC, or the case, or some crazy faliure occures. The RCD and fuse will safe the day
fuse set to 300W
so instant pop
And the AC input is on the opposite end of the PSU from the DC output, and uses a fused connector >_>
Remember, its 240V
@subtle pasture 1200, come on
not 120 :))
Just do c7000 ones
I was going by the 110v label, but I guess the 220v portion was torn off?
Just needed a dirt cheap SAFE supply. Its CE marked
All CE marked means is homeowners insurance won't write you off if that thing starts a fire. lol
Yea tore it off by accident. Said "switch between 120/220 before use"
it has an internal switch.
It's not even auto-sensing ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
I just have huge level of disdain for those style of 12v PSUs. They're not well made, they're not efficient, and you have to work to make them reasonably safe
this ones 5V. Yea i get what you mean, but when your living off'f 120$/month, of which most goes towards investing hand over fist... well
its safe enough, is what im trying to say.
Give up Kevin, you will never win this discussion ๐คฃ
It's 5v and driving LEDs? You... went with this over a wallwart or laptop power brick? O.o
Oh you dont know me. As stubborn as can be
Find me a 30A wall wart
I already mentioned laptop power bricks...
in sweden, remember
not amazon.com. amazon.se
our selection of.. of.. of anything is ~1/100'th that of the US
no one prioritizes sweden. You literely couldnt buy a 5V 2A supply online pre 2020.
before amazon
Sweden ๐คข
I hear Norway has more stuff
Gotta love how beefy those cabled need to be to push enough amps at 5v. lol
I fucking agree
it's just buried under a layer of ice
Injected thrice
~5 - 10A/cable
Why 5v LEDs when they're such a pain?
ws2812b are the defacto standard for fully addressable rgb led strips
You can run 12 and 24v LEDs with 3.3v or 5v control logic
You two aren't done fighting yet? ๐
Nobody's fighting? >_>
Its a civilized discussion
which i actually find intresting
I'm allowed to be concerned. lol
No its not, Leapo is shitting your install, you are doing good defending it thought ๐
The original photo looks like it belongs on r/DIWhy
Oh i wish there were fully addressable strips with CC bucks set to a wider voltage range. But size matters thats what she said & you cant cram larger ones in a 5050 pixel form factor without chaging the design to account for the added thermal load.
so were stuck with 5V.
I've seen 12v RGB LED strips, but if you're space constrained...
@subtle pasture nope. But
