midnight adder
#

yeah but power consumption is high

winter wren
#

if u want transcode :))) then...power hungry

midnight adder
#

especially compared to a nuc 😛

#

well im not sure how heavy ill use the plex server

#

might just be a home assistant server

#

as my pi 4 becomes too slow/small to handle the whole

#

so looking to upgrade and nuc would be my goto solution for now

winter wren
#

low power machine can handle most things...i still never tried a camera feed to see load cpu on HA environment

midnight adder
#

would be interested in that too as i might hang some cameras round soon

#

will they consume that much power?

winter wren
#

i heard yes, but there are spying guys that can help answer

midnight adder

wdym lol

winter wren

If you want to know the specifics of using camera streams with HA, #cameras-archived will have better answers.

midnight adder
#

in the netherlands there is a law where we cannot aim our cameras on the road in the netherlands

winter wren
#

that's pretty bad

midnight adder
#

but in the neighbourhood not that many people actually listen to that

#

so ill just yeet some cameras to the road myself

winter wren

if something happens on the road....right in front of your house

midnight adder

road isnt yours so you shouldnt care ~government

winter wren

or two cars stop on the road in front of your house and 10 guys rush for your tail....maybe a 20 seconds early start running should be nice

How much memory should use HA supervised? Somewhere about...

deft pewter
#

There are support channels 😉

#

As it says in the channel topic, no support here

fallow karma
#

Yeah, yeah. I'm just curious

clever mortar
#

It will, unsuprisingly, depend on many many things

fallow karma

🤔 I just realized that my pi3 could be not enough for HA, it has only few addons and integrations but running at almost 90% mem usage

deft pewter
#

We don't talk HA in here.

fallow karma
#

I'm long enough here, to know that sometimes we do 😉 . But ok, I won't anymore.

deft pewter

VMs were cool a few years ago

They are mostly just overhead and old practice these days

surreal smelt

my world is basically VMs with what I do for work

clever mortar
#

Docker is a game changer

mint flame
#

VMs are great when you positively need to run another OS for some odd reason.

clever mortar
#

Each VM has all the overhead of the OS. Docker has none of that overhead

surreal smelt
#

that's sort of the gig with my day to day though

clear ferry
#

VMs will die slowly the next five to ten years

surreal smelt
#

how's docker on windows?

clever mortar
clear ferry
#

Horrible

surreal smelt
#

lot of my day to day is windows, so... 😛

clever mortar
#

Time to lead your day to day job into the 21st century with containers 😄

mint flame
#

Like me, with needing an instance of Ubuntu running on top of my FreeBSD box...

surreal smelt
#

I have less pull with that though. Like I just set up a VM for an HVAC server and the only way they support it is bare metal or VM.

clear ferry
#

Don't run Ubuntu on FreeBSD, use jails

surreal smelt
#

I set up some of my home VMs kind of silly though. Like dynamically expanding disks that can max at 100 GB, yet I only have a 250GB pool for the lot of them

#

didn't realize that as I ported them from a server that had 14TB of space, lol?

clear ferry
#

250GB pool? What is this? 2005?

surreal smelt
#

Just what I had available

#

had a pair of 250GB SSDs and just put them in a storage space mirror

#

began dropping the VMs there

clear ferry
surreal smelt
#

not stupid if it works 😛

clear ferry
#

It apparently doesn't 🤣

mint flame
#

I'm mostly using jails for things. I'm just pretty darned new to HA, so I really wanted at least a Supervised install of it, so that meant running it on a platform that it was setup for.

surreal smelt
#

It... does though.

clear ferry
#

@mint flame so the worst possible install method of HA on a non supported base OS running on a horrible hypervisor? Got it

surreal smelt
#

@mint flame yeah I haven't done anything with HA outside of watching some youtube videos so far.

#

going to kick the tires here at some point soon though

clever mortar
mint flame
#

@clear ferry It works, though

clear ferry
#

So does driving on the wrong side of the road

#

Drunk

#

Until it doesn't

surreal smelt
#

o.O

mint flame
#

If I was going to do it over, I'd absolutely just extract the base image from one of the VM files and do the OS install.

clever mortar
#

You know it's bad when none of the core devs, even the one responsible for it, recommend Supervised and warn people not to use it

mint flame
#

So, the part that I don't get with the ravenous hate on the Supervised method is... there's not really anything said about why it's so bad. As someone new to the platform, I don't get specifically why it's so off. If I got the risk factors, I'd have tried harder up-front to avoid it.

clever mortar
#

They're detailed in the ADR you didn't read 😉

#

If you run it as documented then you've got HAOS but with Debian

#

Pretty much nobody does that, so shit breaks, and people get pissed off

#

There's more forum threads and posts on that subject than I care to count

clear ferry
#

And deploying home assistant in a jail is easy peasy

clever mortar
#

Or a VM if you really want it

clear ferry
#

On bhyve....

#

🤢

mint flame
#

Did overlook the ADR, but have since read it. I gather that there's nothing truly wrong with it except that it's remarkably difficult to maintain thanks to being absurdly easy to mess up dependencies and being nearly impossible to get community support thanks to how many possible variations there could be. That is a real issue. While the installation page did warn of this, it wasn't quite as clear as the ADR was on the subject.

dusky plank
deft pewter
#

If it's not already linked to, you're welcome to add a link to the ADR from the docs.

mint flame
# clear ferry And deploying home assistant in a jail is easy peasy

Agreed, it's easy to setup the core in a jail and did it briefly when first setting it up. I just thought that I was going to really need the add-on store, but I'm really finding fast that I don't need it. Either I'll switch to that in the near future, or will go the OS route. When I really sit down to plan out the integrations, I'll make that decision . Right now, I'm just really poking at it to see exactly what it can do and that I can get all my devices to be recognized and controlled by it. I've got no sort of actual automations setup get.

anyone in here good with samba and plex? i have a server running at my house with proxmox hypervisor and i have Samba setup with webmin in a VM and plex set of up a LXC container on the same Node. the samba drive works fine and the plex media server works fine. however i want to mount a Samba drive as a public drive essentially into plex. i found a really good tutorial the other day on editing the fstab and what not and it worked then all the sudden quit. no matter what i did i couldn't get it to work again and when trying to mount different locations and stuff i kept getting a lot of errors about mount locations not existing although they very much do exist.

im wondering should i maybe try and mount the Samba drive in proxmox and then some how share it to the LXC that has plex? seems weird to mount a drive in the same proxmox server thats its hosted on.

im not home to be able to work on it but am looking for some insight and would greatly appreciate it.

#

I wonder why in countries like the USA, where hurricanes and earthquake are on the agenda, ppl made their houses of wooden sticks and plasterboard

forest edge
#

modren techniques hold up alot better than most think. most the images you see online of hurricane damage etc are of older homes or homes that are not within the traditional tornado area

#

not to mention alot of the damage you see is more surface damage than anything

fallow karma
#

Maybe, you're right. But here , in central Europe, where's no active seismic area, and the wind is too weak to dry the laundry, people still build concrete and brick houses. With 1m wall thikness

forest edge
#

both materials come with pros and cons. here stone usually almost always used as an outer layer more for appearance than functionality because wood benefits outweigh it here

Here outer layer is styrofoam and some plaster (roughcast) for decoration. In the case of whirlwind or so , mostly the roof is damaged or missing, but the rest of house is more or less in place

deft pewter

I'm looking at maps trying to see where my favourite pizza place in Lodz was. Can't find it... but I realised that I didn't even walk the full length of Ul Piotrkowska. It's massive.

Measuring just under five kilometres, it ranks as Europe’s longest pedestrian street and is lined with restaurants, beer gardens, hot-dog stands, and a mix of neo-renaissance and art nouveau buildings; some in chronic disrepair, others restored to their former glory.

subtle pasture
#

It's portrayed fairly differently in every Star Trek series, in spite of supposedly all being the same mirror universe

#

Though TOS and VOY were pretty consistent with one another

cedar chasm
#

Yeah it is convenient that every show can tap into a universe where roughly the same crew of people end up in such close proximity, even though all the "evil" alternate acts that have been accumulated over the years make these coincidences highly unlikely. None of these people's forebears were killed in some evil purge?

subtle pasture
#

@cedar chasm I mean, the lore is that there are multiple parallel universes. The mirror universe is only special because its events are so close to our own... temporarily

#

The timeline of the mirror universe eventually diverges so much from the prime universe that crossover stops happening (or can't happen)

#

Which makes room for a different convergent parallel universe to take its place as the defacto "place you swap with when the transporters fuck up" in future series

cedar chasm
#

Yeah, Discovery tried to firm up the science I believe. But at the end of the day a degree of disbelief-suspension is required to enjoy ST at large

subtle pasture
#

Basically, the fact that it's such a coincidence is what makes it the mirror universe in the first place, because too much divergence makes it impossible to reach 🤷‍♀️

cedar chasm
#

I mean yeeeeah? But the federation being a Terran Empire doesn't happen in the space of an episode.

subtle pasture
#

True. It started as a political movement in the 1950's in the mirror universe

#

But though a large number of coincidences (thanks to the infinite possibilities afforded by parallel universes), parental lineage in that universe appears to be identical to our own

cedar chasm
#

That's the part that gets me

subtle pasture
#

I mean, given infinite possibilities, that's possible. lol

#

There would have to be ONE universe where all the same people still exist

cedar chasm
#

For all their evil they apparently shoot at each other GI Joe style

subtle pasture
#

I mean, that'd be part of the reason the mirror universe eventually gets too different from our own to be reachable

#

if the lore is "only super-closely-related parallel universes are easily reachable" then the mirror universe, and its subsequent disappearance, make sense

cedar chasm
#

I guess so.
I actually like infinite universe thinking to explain things

subtle pasture
#

Things get really weird when you start thinking about what the reboot (and its alternative timeline) would do...

#

Does the alternative timeline have its own mirror universe, or is it shared? @_@

subtle pasture

TOS Kirk visits the mirror universe, but does reboot Kirk?

cedar chasm

Infinity must mean the cycle repeats with Chris Pine Kirk

#

That's what we're settling on

subtle pasture

What I'm curious about is if both Kirks visit the same mirror universe, or different ones that are more closely related to their own individual timelines

Hey guys, this is a super random question, it's pretty much r/tooafraidtoask level - so I recently got some Xiaomi temperature & humidity sensors and I've noticed the inside temperature is always 10-15 degrees higher than outside, even with no heating. What's that all about, how does that work?

deft pewter
#

Are you asking why the inside of your insulated house is warmer than the outside? 🤔

fallow karma
#

Turn on air conditioning

clever mortar
#

Open the fridge door...

deft pewter
#

Energy (including heat) transfers through different substances at different rates. It takes quite a long time for heat to be conducted through common construction materials. If the inside of your home is warmer than the outside, it takes a looooong time to reach equilibrium with the external temperature unless you open up all your doors and windows - and then you're actually just counting on the air moving (convection), not the heat being transferred (conduction).

#

And don't forget that just because your heating is off, that doesn't mean there are no heat sources. TV's, computers, fridges, freezers, even light bulbs - these all generate heat passively, even though their main purpose is to do something useful.

clever mortar
#

People also generate significant amounts of heat

deft pewter
#

My study gets a lot warmer than other rooms in the house... mostly due to my gaming PC that's always on, as well as other electrical equipment.

crimson hearth
#

That's all absolutely fair, thanks, however I think I was wondering where the excess inside heat comes from. The appliances might be the answer, that's true

deft pewter
crimson hearth
#

it's kinda funny how much heat can actually be stored this way

clever mortar
#

Anything that uses power, which includes humans

deft pewter
#

Yeah, energy conversion is never 100% efficient and the byproduct is almost always heat.

clever mortar
#

A properly insulated modern house requires no heating even in colder climates

crimson hearth
#

So the conclusion here is we're all hot?

clever mortar
#

We all produce hot air, yes

hey guys is it possible to have too many devices on a single 2.4 ghz wifi signal to the point the network is constantly crashing?

i have a netgear r7800 with about 35 wired and wireless devices.

glacial knot
#

low end routers tend to have 32 as max stations

#

But that router shouldn't be that bad I guess.
Wifi does rely on compliant devices though. So if you have 3 or 4 that do dumb stuff, that can also bring it down quickly

meh, watching repair videos in attempt to fix my dryer.. there was a tiny puzzle on the dismantling, no idea what part might be broken still but its fun to break things into part 😄

lapis cipher
#

nah, what could possibly go wrong

#

just found the culprit of the problem i think, no thanks to video but electricity, something's up with the motor turning the drum, unfortunately that part is the most remote to access.

lapis cipher
#

dang, my torx set is nowhere to be found, bits are too short, connectors are stupidly protected with another cover and pretty difficult to disconnect without removing it first.. I really see no point for that, connectors are locked so its not holding them in place either

deft pewter
#

Get lobbying for right to repair 😉

#

Companies make it difficult to repair so that you buy new stuff all the time. It's wasteful.

I don't think it's on the lower end. But when in doubt, check your datasheet 😛
I got a custom build one, based on an apu. I think it supports 64 stations

Yeah. They're not content with charging double for their products. They also want you to buy them twice as often.

Sounds like some governments are starting to apply pressure though. I'm hopeful things will change, even if it takes a few years to get there.

Takes pressure from people

Well, yeah. If the same idiots keep supporting them, they won't be in a hurry to change.

there are bunch of unused connectors, i wonder... might be next to impossible to find schematics for the controller.

Sometimes things get handled by workers high up enough to change things but not high up enough to be wined and dined by lobbyists,

So sometimes we get lucky

lapis cipher

i don't have any errors so that makes it more difficult to debug this case. Now that i just got the panel disconnected i found some service manual with instructions for diagnostics programs and stuff.. Off to shop anyways for those torx ->

i could actually use something that does thin image of a disk.. i don't fancy to store all those zeroes.. There's plenty of commercial offering but there's probably good bunch of opensource as well, feel free to hint while i can do my googling, too

lapis cipher

I was btw talking a generic (full) disk imaging with a possibility to installing it to another sized disk and so forth. I see i did not make much mention about that.. I'd actually first thing need to move one windows to an ssd, i can do my magic with the commands for other stuff but this i don't know well at all

clever mortar
#

dd can do that, but there's no shortage of other tools

deft pewter

Sure, it's not as 'cool' as the Unix stuff the others are sharing but it works.
