lapis cipher

Hmm, checking my stats, total for last year is 11063,78 kWh and 1085,59 eur (just for the transfer, there is then a local company taking their share but can't see them now)

#

Weird numbers, not trusting those, way too low

clear ferry
#

I was missing one month last year since I changed vendors in January , but 28k last year plus January, so close to 32-33 probably since January is the coldest month

opaque girder

I'd have to add all bills to find total and CBA but e.g. last bill which was Dec - Febr was only 1.1K so roughly let's say 11kWh as well per year

clear ferry

That is โ‚ฌ360 for 28890kwh

last cedar
#

Mmm looks like things get janky when you start doing stuff forwards and backwards all the time. Passing images and stuff around all the time

I believe the KISS method, bi detects motion, jpeg to aitool, sends to deepstack, records high quality and send a mqtt thingie. Notification and I am done.

None of this screenshot of a screenshot and such.

subtle pasture
#

Currently, if you want to pass a GeForce GPU to a VM on ESXi, you have to set some flags on the VM to hide the fact that it's a VM from the guest OS

#

Otherwise, Nvidia's drivers will balk when you try to install them in the guest OS

dusky plank
#

i never had trouble with 10 series cards in this regard ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

subtle pasture

I have. lol

Quadros will pass-through with no such limitations

dusky plank

oh, I never do windows.

subtle pasture

The open-source Linux Nvidia drivers have no such limitation, but I believe the closed-source drivers do

#

But if you're running the default drivers that came with your distro, you're probably running the open source ones

last cedar
# clear ferry ๐Ÿคข

Also, you can't officially run OSX in a VM unless the host hardware is Apple hardware...

dusky plank

well then call me unofficial ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ works like a charm every time

subtle pasture
#

Also, most Macs you'd want to virtualize on come with Quadros or Radeons

dusky plank
#

it's a hackintosh / frankenstein mac at most. far from official and original Mac

subtle pasture
#

@dusky plank Error 43 is specific to trying to pass a consumer GeForce card through to a Windows VM. It's Nvidia intentionally nerfing the card.

dusky plank
#

Windows things

subtle pasture
#

No... Nvidia things...

#

Nvidia is intentionally nerfing GeForce cards in specific scenarios

#

Just like you only get 2 transcode streams on GeForce cards, or (until recently) had fixed PCIe BAR space on GeForce cards

#

Where as Quadro cards have always fully supported pass-through to any VM, let you transcode as many streams as the hardware can handle, and have had flexible PCIe BAR space support since 2006 (Tesla architecture)

I always thought my typing speed around around 80wpm. Apparently I can sustain 110. Gonna go ask my boss for a raise.

last cedar
#

Depends what you are paid for

clear ferry
#

I think I used to have 110ish, no idea these days

last cedar
#

I get paid for fixing stuff that no one else has the patience to fix

#

So typing quickly costs me money ๐Ÿคฃ

deft pewter
#

I don't bill my time, so I'd prefer to be quick and spend the rest of the day chilling.

clear ferry
#

Sounds like my job

winter wren
#

110 ๐Ÿ˜ฎ amazing

deft pewter
#

The leaderboards on that site say people have up to 276wpm... that's incredible.

#

I'm guessing they're not using a regular keyboard. Probably one of those things court typists use.

#

Ah... that's also a 15 second test, so not sustained. Drops to 180 on 60 seconds, which is slightly more believable ๐Ÿ˜„

hushed basalt
#

I probably don't do too much "typing" in my job

deft pewter
#

Yeah, it's not like devs have to type out dictated stuff.

#

More thinking than typing too.

winter wren
#

quality over quantity !

deft pewter
#

It's not just that. It often takes hours to understand something well and then a one-line code change to fix it.

winter wren
#

for devs true

#

love times when developers sent me ...there is a program that has more includes and that why...blabla....

#

lucky i tripped over HA and started to understand what to do with includes :))

Context switching is the worst part in working in cross functional roles

deft pewter
#

My role's not cross functional but context switching still hurts. Boss is on our backs about time tracking and efficiency at the moment... at the same time as scattering random meetings throughout the day, every day.

#

But you've got half an hour in between to do work

#

Yeah, boss. That half hour is a write-off.

lapis cipher
#

saturn 5 is huge, its just incredible in size

#

(talking to backlog i see, who scrolled my screen??)

winter wren
#

having non-technical boss is good for surviving company....but bad for understanding technical details

lapis cipher
#

Was in Austin so had to rent a Mustang convertible and drive to Houston for a space day. I would probably next time pay for a personal guide and get some more access around the facilities

last cedar
lapis cipher
#

standing next to saturn v makes one think if its the right spot to sit on top of all that fuel.. nothing to do with sanity or such..

last cedar
#

They just wanted to get it there, and knew some would die making that happen. It is very unfortunate tbh.

winter wren
#

u only die once

lapis cipher
#

that'll keep happening but many are willing to take the risk for the "greater good", i'm sure one of those rockets will soon explode during the flight, there's yet no safe space travel

winter wren
#

beside populate the earth, being remembered for something heroic will bear in lot of peaople your memory

lapis cipher
#

uh, astronaut wage starts from $66000, that's umm nothing? i wonder if they get some space-time extra, what about the travel costs to iss?

last cedar
#

Everything is risky, just about minimising that

#

They get travel expenses ๐Ÿคฃ everyone wants mars mission

clear ferry
#

@lapis cipher we used to be paid per hour going to oil platforms to fix sruff

lapis cipher
#

but oil business is money business ๐Ÿ™‚

clear ferry
#

That got.... Expensive fast when we couldn't catch the helicopter

lapis cipher
#

yeah, can imagine

clear ferry
#

Had a friend who worked with automations on oilrigs and stuff, he had platinum in every airline thinkable (travelling ww) and travelled 270 days a year, he had a base pay of $160k I believe, plus extras

#

He decided he wanted a girlfriend, so he swapped to only 100 days of travel a year, base pay still at $80k

lapis cipher
#

that's rough yeah, its "fun" for a moment but gets really tough once you realize your travelling is really just hotels and airports and some work in between, there is nothing glamorous in that despite some think so ("oh, you get to travel so much, it must be nice")

clear ferry
#

It could be fun for a while

lapis cipher
#

exactly, for a while

clear ferry
#

If I was single I would have jumped on one of the last job offers I got

#

40% travel, Europe and Asia

lapis cipher
#

easier for younger people without families, houses and stuff. Being apart does make good for just about every relationship as long as its in balance

clear ferry
#

But now I'll settle for 3-5 days a month of travel

#

Apparently the northern Europe manager wants to offer me a new position after Easter, wondering what that is

winter wren
#

president of Norway?

clear ferry
#

๐Ÿคข

#

That sounds like people responsible

#

Don't want any of that bull

winter wren
#

i want to travel more again :))

clear ferry
#

Why is there so many russian kids on YouTube playing with dolls

#

There are literally thousands of videos

#

And it looks like a full time job

I have many U of space

deft pewter

I don't even have my first rack server ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

My server is an NUC ๐Ÿ˜‚

last cedar
#

NUCs make great servers tbh

#

Maybe a slightly larger cooling solution ideally, but still good

deft pewter
#

Yeah but I still want atx to send me some old HPE stuff.

#

I cba spending a fortune on a good NAS.

late gate
#

Anyone know about a KVM switch that can handle multiple monitor outputs (up to 4K x 3) and input for 3 monitors from 2 computers? (I have a mix of hdmi, dvi and dp)

last cedar
#

You can get a nice little box fairly cheap

deft pewter
#

The software isn't the problem. I was going to go with TrueNAS SCALE, at atx's recommendation. It's putting together the hardware and multiple disks that's gonna cost me.

last cedar
#

If you know any raccoons, thry can normaally get stuff at discount prices

deft pewter
#

Ideally, I want something capable of transcoding video too (preferably 4k for future-proofing) but still low power usage.

last cedar
#

You would need a modern igpu then, skylake or newer

#

Or like a nV card

#

Quadro 2000 for example, none of them are cheap though

deft pewter
#

Yeah, that's the problem ๐Ÿ˜„

last cedar
#

Trancoding 4K is almost better to have 2 copies tbh. 4k and non 4k to save transcoding 4k

deft pewter
#

Makes sense

#

We usually stream to the Fire 4K anyway, so I don't think I have to transcode. Just figured it'd be sensible to be able to.

last cedar
#

Sounds like a solid plan

#

What can your nuc do?

#

You could run dockers on that and share its igpu

#

And just have a basic nas

deft pewter
#

It's only got a Celeron, so it won't handle much ๐Ÿ˜„

last cedar
#

Well it might be enough anyway

#

The ones after skylake were a lot stronger afaik

winter wren
#

my nas celeron still sits comfortable with ha

deft pewter
#

Yes, HA works fine. I don't want to try media transcoding on it ๐Ÿ˜‰

winter wren
#

for what media transcode?

deft pewter
#

Plex stuff

winter wren
#

uh...sounds nice

#

never tried that

#

i see what i download...either 1080 or uhd

#

maybe i can try to transcode m.a.s.h. to uhd :))

deft pewter
#

But why? You transcode down, not up...

#

This isn't CSI, you can't just enhance to add missing quality.

winter wren
#

oh...down

#

why down ?

#

i don't understand the topic maybe

deft pewter
#

If you have a 4k video but you want to view it on something that can't handle 4k, you transcode it down to something like 1080p or 720p.

#

Or maybe the video type isn't compatible, so you transcode to a different video type that your device can understand.

winter wren
#

did only once to view a movie on nokia 5800 express music :)))

#

everything should be compatible...else flies out of window

#

my tv understands 4k..although not the fastest and brightest model....and nas has a 5m hdmi cable to deliver 4k to tv

im looking for a server, with home assistant and a plex server. Should i buy a NUC or a dell precision 3430 i7-8700

#

found a deal where i get the dell for 300 euros so pretty cheap

winter wren
#

atx has servers

midnight adder

can somebody give me advice on this
