I didn't get a choice, but might have gone J&J for the one-and-done part. I ended up with Moderna
3 days of feeling kinda sick was about right for me
Hm? It specifically says all in your quote. Which is the dumb thing
MTU Discovery and redirect are different than timeout or echo request/reply

there is a reason why you don't hear much about consumer HP products anymore...
I wouldn't know, I haven't been affiliated with that company for 6 years
hp compaq ๐
Good thing I always was "purple" even though I'm more "blue" at heart
what?
People who started working in Compaq were "Red", people who started working in HP were "blue" and people who started working after the merger was "purple"
ok don't understand that but ok lol
I think even five year olds could understand the mixing of colours ๐
not in the sense you are trying to make it out but that isn't the part I didn't understand. don't work for HP, no clue you all labeled each other by color
Pretty sure any company that has more than a single merge has some kind of legend to identify by
maybe but i never seen it
can't say that I have
ohh rpi4 officially supports emmc through sd slot. missed that in the notes lol
now there is no excuse since you can get those for like 35 bucks. way cheaper than ssd's and don't require any extra power
show me the memory which doesnโt use power
I prefer Persistant memory anyway
as in no more than the sd card
heck through hard kernel the adapter is a 1.50 and the module is 26 bucks lol
wish hardkernel sold more stuff on amazon. i like free shipping

hy anyone uses sonoff switches??
Lots of folks do
i want to install sonoff r2 switch to my ac
should i install the switch before the stabilizer or after the stabilizer
Hi guys, just bought a small fabless industrial Pc based on i5-9500TE (6 cores, 35watts), 32gb Ram and 1TB nvme ssd: price was ridicously low so I bought it to replace my current celeron N4100 mini Pc.
Other HW I have is a coral USB stick: planning to run frigate on it.
For the rest I have a lot of cpu power but not sure what to do with it: any suggestion?
folding@home. Or give me access to the machine with distcc ๐
wish i had some small beefy box to run my crap, now i just have racks full of old raspis ๐คฃ
๐คข
only here to trigger emotions from atx ๐
Ahaha! In this lockdown period sometimes you buy stuff you donโt need: this was so cheap I couldnโt resist (200eu)
no bad! Yeah, i got 3 packages yesterday and expecting more just about on daily basis, been clicking around ๐
For folding@home I am planning to use my current miniPC as less power hungry
did you grab that off of ebay for that price? ๐ฎ
Yes, it was sold near my hometown: I think it was dismissed by a company and they didnโt have an idea of real value or didnโt care
living near mid-size companies that does happe
I like KDE, and I liked gnome2, I use gnome3 because kde was buggy as hell
small ones still know what stuff is worth
large ones have a weird mix of processes and beuracracy ontop of their size, that they tend to not sell them this way
but I'm excited about gnome40
i got a box full of these, i have no idea what to do with them but since they were going to trash i had to take them: https://www.viatech.com/en/support/eol/artigo-a1000-eol/

probably raspi 1 is better than these but nice case and stuff, could build something on those or just have them for the next few decades in storage "just in case"...
BTW I am going to run proxmox on it and, together with HA and other stuff, I would like to install a lightweight Linux distribution for random stuff: do you have any suggestion? I was thinking about SparkyLinux
That is so personal preference, go with anything you feel good with
I would say, run debian as the baseos, then do kvm and docker as you see fit
Never even heard of that flavor but staying out of the mainstream makes you have to do lots of stuff probably manually since nobody is providing you with the packages.. I'd go with Debian as i've been in that world for so long
ah, sparky is based on debian, try it out, experiment and change if needed
Yeah is Debian based and oriented to lightweight desktop environments which I prefer
desktop enviroment for a server

I should get openSUSE a chance again

isnt this also a "rolling" distro like cent stream?

wsl doesn't use hyperv?
2 does, i "tried" to hint about using 1 above (agree its not so clear..)
oh, til. thought wsl1 was also hyperv
anyway, you can get everything wsl does also in other hypervisors
yeah, i am well aware but that's a whole different topic. Ohwell, screw it, gonna go out as its the most warm and sunny day for this year so far, charge up a bit d vitamins and stuff

I find it amazing that one can flash a whole OS on a raspberry remotely, starts up with a fresh system and not even plugged power once
only recommendation: place that damn ssh file in /boot before you flash the image
like now you boot from a usb instead of the sd or switchroot to tempfs
Thanks
lol - neat
This is more of a Linux thing than a HA thing. The Linux "shutdown" command, by default, schedules the shutdown process to being a full minute in the future.
If I had to guess as to why, I'd say it's probably to give you time to cancel the operation
I love that this works in a markdown card ๐
I remember windows doing that. Haven't seen that on linux with the delayed shutdown
Weird, been the default for as long as I can remember. You run the shutdown command and it tells you Shutdown scheduled for <date/time> with the default being 1 minute into the future.
Agreed - Except I always use "now" cos i'm impatient
I don't feel like testing that on any system right now D:
60000 milliseconds you will never get back
more of the startup afterwards I don't want to deal with
come on, that even reads on the man page or does nobody anymore refer to those? ๐
no
that explains ๐ ๐
I just do poweroff either way
and I've read the code of that one for systemd-sysvinit compat mode. Because systemd is dumb
can't recall when i've last time waited for such to happen, i recall at some point with some generous time when there were others logged in and couldn't reach them via other means
probably one of those things you just get stuck (i just about always still run shutdown -h now ), same for example tar xvzf foo.tar.gz or ps -elf...
elf? ps aux pls

my pi keeps getting hung and its pissing me off lmao
It is not down

works fine for me (archive.raspberry.org)
my network must be acting funny
not to mention PiosLite will not connect to my wifi
ugh its a bad day today
wifi on rpi ๐คฎ 2.4ghz ๐คข
nah 5 Ghz
Yepppppppp
are you sure? mine just show 2.4
yeah, I get all the 5ghz networks
4 does for sure. Did the 3 already have 5GHz?
since they didn't even have real GBit ethernet
ok 3B+
yes
wow HBO is making a show about the 1980 LA lakers...talk about specific
That seems circle jerk level
aren't most sports-related things?
John C Reilly as Jerry Buss ahha that should be great
5 > 2.4 so it's better m'kay
yeah, totally like I didn't knew that already
You would think this is one of the places where people understand how technology works. Bigger number always means it's better
Lots of other WiFi APs. Bluetooth. Zigbee. The 2.4 GHz spectrum seems to be a tad busy... wonder why people like 5 GHz ๐ค
with all the crap on 2.4 5GHz is both more durable and speedy
And work through walls is a downside, not an upside ๐
at least (or especially) in apartment situations
Standalone houses+garden might be a bit different
One wall sure, two walls, maybe, two houses not so much
2.4Ghz ๐คข
depends on the amount of walls but you can just turn down the power too
If you've got a decent router, and if your neighbours care to do that too
Best regards someone who has been deploying WiFi networks for almost 20 years, and 2.4Ghz sucks
๐คฃ
pretty fly for a wifi, I like that
but do you use channel 13 & 14 ?
Some
Japanese channels only senpai @dusky plank
I cleaned out my greenhouse today
Getting close to starting season
Gotta get Arduino running here
what's that monstrosity?
64 channel multiplexer with power outputs and rj45 connectors+ more
I never said the board was Arduino though
Which should be obvious with the esp connectors
Also, Arduino mega ๐คข
I remember when you found out that board existed ๐ I'm expecting a follow up when you set it up ๐
hmm, seen that board before, just not sure where. Anyways, do post if you actually make something out of it, i can paste also pictures of unused boards for great plans, zero execution ๐
it's a custom board. Very unique ๐
looks like one of those early boards people made to put together thier own custom router
yea
Banana Pi SBCs always look cool, but have terrible software support
No mention of OpenWRT support for the board above, though it'll run... Android...
banana pi m1 was ๐ฅ tho
I have the same problem with Pine SBCs, honestly. Nice hardware, absolutely zero software that works on it.
armbian is good for those
yes and no...
it's good if you don't mind being stuck on an old kernel (the one that Pine developed patches for)
If you want to be on the latest mainline kernel, theeeeen you're gonna have a bad time / major features of the board won't work
5.10 ๐ค new enough for me
i wonder if they ever came out with a rpi compute module router board
@dusky plank Nope, 4.4 if you want all board features to work
5.10 you'll get no hardware acceleration from the GPU whatsoever. No 3D, no video decoding, no nothing.
So yeah, been years, and that's STILL a problem
That's why they still provide a legacy image running on the 4.4 kernel for the Rock64...
have no idea about the R; can only talk for m1 which had 1gig iface in 2014 ๐ฅณ
yeah the mali was trash anyways, no wonder nobody cared
Checking the OpenWRT wiki for R1 support... and it's not looking promising. They list over Allwinner A20 based SBCs (including others from Banana Pi), but not the R1...
You remember my first proper orgasm, thanks honey
Allwinner Sun4i/5i/6i/7i/9i (sunxi) Various vendors are offering development boards / single-board computer based on the Allwinner SoCs. These are running various flavors of the A1x, A20, A31, and soon H3 SoCs, with different buildouts. The mach is called โsunxiโ. For some specs rather see
Weird, that's not mentioned on the Allwinner page at all ^
Ah... I see why...
Note: As of Nov 10, 2015 the trunk version of OpenWrt does not boot due to U-Boot
it is
It hasn't been built since 2015

It's a shame tasmota doesn't support multiple ws2812 (or multiple light)
I might have to split my daughters IKEA kitchen in two, one part with wled for the lighting and one part with tasmota for the buttons
Lol, the onboard wifi doesn't work in AP mode on the R1 under the current bootable build of OpenWRT...
And just do wled segments
lol ikea
Actually... https://github.com/arendst/Tasmota/issues/2499
Seems it supports multiple strips just fine ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Well, it does, in serial, according to that comments ,but there is no mentio of it in the docs @subtle pasture
And that is the only comment that mentions it at all
That comes across slightly racist.
Because I'm sure you could pronounce their names perfectly, right?
Or, here's a really crazy idea... they can ask to be called by whatever name they choose.
A little respect and tolerance goes a long way.

Ah, yes. Nicknames are 'straight up lies'.
Sup, atx. You're a straight up liar.
I'm unwilling to buy from you because you're not called mono.
And how exactly do you know they're not?
I shall pass. I'm not disrespectful enough.
And let's drop this. Code of conduct for this community expects respect toward all.
Are telemarketers exempt from having an interest in HA and joining this community?
Drop it.
i mean.. they should be exempt lol
You guys and your telemarketers, I haven't had a call in almost two decades, just sign a waiver by the government that you aren't interested
Oh right, you live in a third world country

I'm not on any list. I'm just smart enough to not share my number publicly ๐คทโโ๏ธ
third world means noone wants to call you..
+44 (123) 0456789123 got it @deft pewter
Sounds about right
Actually, it's 0118 999 881 99 9119 7253
don't forget the +44 you guys
Y'all
your number being public is irrelevant
I dunno. Works pretty well in countries with actual privacy laws.
because no one wants to call you
Also not having a land line helps
Those robodiallers are illegal in a ton of places. People can only call if you consent and provide them with your details.

they call from out of country, your laws mean squat
because you have nothing
@deft pewter have you not recently gotten those calls from *HMRC * that if you don't respond back an arrest warrant will be issued for you? Or is that just me ๐

If they're routing calls via something in my country that gives them a number in my country, it falls under my country's laws ๐
its called spoofing
Thanasis - I've seen talk of those. I think it's hilarious that people are dumb enough to fall for it.
Adam - stop fucking tagging me on every fucking reply. I don't need notifications.
They were callingme for 2 weeks every 2 days so annoying
If I'm here and I see your message, I may reply.
and because I wouldn't pick up they'd call again and again till it was answered
I feel bad for the people who actually need those jobs but telemarketing in general is a cancer
I see now why they call the Americans, easy targets
and we have money
The only repeat calls I've had from somewhere was the car dealership we bought from trying to arrange a service. I bluntly told them to remove me from their marketing list - they haven't called again since.
The ones calling me aren't even people it's prerecorded tts
Because... privacy laws ๐
I like how these small countries try and compare themselves to the us lol
I like how Americans think land mass means superiority.
UK = densely populated.
US = just dense
don't be jealous

fact of the matter is, if telemarketing wanted to target your area there isn't a damn thing you could do about it
We don't have areas
Since we don't have land lines
We have national mobile numbers
cell phones are not exmpt

pretty short term play for them here, they get copped down
can't shut them down

can't prosicute, cannot prevent
Because it's somehow impossible to track them down and issue lawsuits? ๐ค
works fine here ๐คทโโ๏ธ
UK is mostly mobile numbers they call or? I anyway don't have a landline in the UK lol
It's easy, it's a single click for the telecom company
as long as your country allows outside calls to come in, nothing you can do
Shut down
We don't have this robocalling crap you do in the States. It's almost entirely an American phenomenon.
masses of calls? from one place? reported as scam?
get prepared for the raid
again, because you have nothing
thats why you don't have the issue lol
No. Nothing at all. No money to spend ๐คทโโ๏ธ
no in scale no
Seriously, stop shitting on other countries. You claim other people are jealous but you whine about other countries every day
We don't have all the poverty and credit card debt, no idea calling us@deft pewter
Ew๐คข
you are trying to compare small to big and it's just dumb
we have forest cities, can't complain ๐ฒ
'Bigger is better' ๐คฏ

Denser is better (for them)
Watching Americans try to name places on a map is better
if you are going to target a population and invest money into means to help increase your chances of getting sales/scams and what ever else you don't target a smaller country, you go for the big fish
plain and simple
https://x0.at/H4_.mp4
gangster hiphop with chinese girls wearing japanese haircut is the best

Arguably, you target the most idiotic people if you're going to scam. But thanks for agreeing that's Americans ๐
you are one angry person lol
If they wanted to scam based on population, they'd go for Russia/China/India.
incorrect
Angry? I'm laughing my tits off here ๐
apparently we happy AND rich
they made documentaries about it mono, try breaching out and learn something. this shit isn't new and has been around since like the 80's
In the us, sure
Rest of the world, not so much
Yeah... this is turning into a pissing match here. If you can't talk sense, I'm out.
Just pack up and go home boys
no match about it. fact is fact. you can't understand the issue unless you experience and be around the problem
but yet you guys try and throw in your worthless 2 cents on shit you know nothing about lol
and with that i am done ๐
Atleast we have been to more than one country
Last I counted, 18 on four different continents ๐คฃ
Actually, three
also flying over don't count
I mostly work from home, even when I work on systems in Afghanistan
heard you guys are rich
In other news... Dyson just announced a vacuum cleaner with LASERS. https://mashable.com/article/dyson-v15-laser-vacuum/?europe=true
uh, anything with frickin laser beams, take my money!
Except for sharks.
So it will show me all the dust I don't vacuum, so I have to vacuum more?
My wife will be pleased
Exactly
although our health system is complete shit, not many are put in finacial ruin because of it

I'm on the fence about it. On the one hand, it'd be a good aid for better cleaning. On the other hand, I don't want to see all the stuff I normally miss.
the amount of dust is just amazing, two dogs aren't exactly helping with that
been wondering if some air cleaner thingy would help filtering that airborne stuff
We've just got the one cat and there's still plenty of hair everywhere.
I had an air purifier in my study for a while and didn't notice much of a difference. Bought it because of allergies and it didn't help.
Maybe it was just a crappy model ๐คทโโ๏ธ
that's what i'm afraid of if they are of any use for real. i'm not per se worried about that tiny shit but it eventually falls everywhere, gets sucked into computers and just everywhere
cat hair tumbleweeds
mentioned dyson sells some like 500 eur thingy, that is pretty much for a fraction of more particle-free air.. And once you keep some doors/windows open you've again lost the fight.. summer is coming so we vent quite a bit
Yeah, hard to actually keep your air filtered.
my major allergy outbreaks went away with a sinple robot vacuum which runs once a day
i think i'll settle to this, just need to vacuum more often. today was actually the first day i wasn't satisfied on the end result of the robot. I then checked the brushes and ups, time for some maintenance..
Is your home all on one floor? The biggest thing putting me off a robot vac is that we're on two floors.
nope, i have a stair in the middle of it which needs a swipe every so often. upstairs is just windows and a terrace but the vacuums filter does a great job for me
So most of your living space is on one floor?
The bits that needs vacuuming, anyway.
most of it yes
I might have to move into a bungalow ๐
do it
Bungalows here are usually small places for old people to die in.
i have a rather small flat but still more entites than @magic basin
We want something bigger when we move. If we're both working from home, we're thinking of 4-5 bedrooms so we can use two as studies.
2 vacs๐
Yeah, that'd be the answer... but it still wouldn't take care of the stairs... ๐ฆ
its still quite amazing amount of dust the robot collects on daily runs, its more obvious with the robot as you need to empty each round (or maybe its just us..)
@deft pewter yep. That's the challenge
As soon as they make one that can handle stairs, I'm all in.
make that thing fly with a drone on top
@tidal bronze intel building their biggest chip manufacturing in nevada..cali is losing out lol
@deft pewter still worth it IMO
just carry the robot to another floor, many support that
We've got a fairly small place right now, so I don't mind doing it manually. If we upsize, I'm definitely gonna talk the wife into at least one robo vac.
just wait for Rosie to come out. can't be too long now
Vac + HA + traffic count == perfection ๐
what is meant by traffic count in that equation?
Knowing how many people are present.
Vacuum when the house is vacant instead of when you're trying to watch a movie ๐
Or times the area was occupied during 24 hours.
Ah, that too. Clever.
Guest areas get cleaned very rarely.
I'd have to put up a lot more sensors to handle that. I only cover the entrances at the moment, not individual rooms.
hm, I could do that too now with that roborock... it just never came to mind, 50 more entities. you hear that @magic basin ?
Roborock counts Occupancy?
nope ๐ but i have enough sensors for occupancy
quads house is lined with so many sensors i bet his doctor knows the color of his shit before he does
it can do shoe and cable detection tho, it can even show you pictures of it and routes around it. i like that.
Don't have that issue. No cables lying around.
instead of ending up in some corner because of a cable lying around
which model?
my office has lots ๐คฌ
mine just tumbles into cords and pulls laptops to the floor if lets laying..
s6 maxv
im a fan of Neato because the D-shape does a good job getting the corners
I run 2 x s6 and one S5. Can't wait to try the s7.
s5 max here. well it has the whole roof to put sensors on ๐
@tidal bronze get you some kids already. i wanna hear the stories of some of this crap getting broke lol
Not yet. Lol.
lol
House cleaners are the only ones that mess it up.
i cnat keep LED lights at my toddlers height anymore
lol 3 robot vacums and house cleaners
What can I say I like it spotless
neato went kaput, i actually spent hours on picking the new make/model, found out there are huge sites dedicated for just filming the robots and making reports out of them ๐ฎ
@tidal bronze so wehn do drones that clean windows and dust walls come out?
They dust the vacs and never put them back in the dock.
ive had my D7s for years and no issues here and neato gladly fixes any issues within a week
quad will be the first to have these https://youtu.be/DLf5iJ2jOZ4

No idea. Been looking into palm tree trimming prototype
It's exactly that

It's 70% done. Hardest part was to grab the trunk power down and then do the cutting.

The application I sent to the engineer union is still under debate, a similar job to what I do does not exist as a job offering, but I found three other job offerings that cover about 70% of what I do, that all require a five year masters, so sent them that and said "I do this plus some more"๐คฃ

I built a mini system with a Deskmini x300 and a Ryzen 4750G - aditional space for 2 2.5 drives
it is, you can drive 6 displays with it
care to send a pic of IO?
i also wanted a ryzen but mini systems still lack them for the most part

my new desk pc because my laptop can't handle 4k 60
what dock gives you that atx ?
Hey, my Zbook G3 ain't no gaming laptop
@unkempt sage The HP Thunderbolt G2 dock
Waiting for my Zbook G7 still ๐ข
I also don't game, it just generally can't handle 60 IO wise ๐
does it do the 3 screens plus laptop screen, or just 2_laptop or 3 external ?
Which game?
I have to do one 4k60 via DP, one 4k60 via USB-C->DP and I do the 1080 via DSUB
I do three external
laptop lid is never open
got the USB-C -> DP adapter for $8 which was great
that thing can drive 6 displays 4k60 without dock
apparently it can also drive 10 displays ๐

these 1080p displays are still aroung..
all in my office ๐ฟ
How can I change the icon for a command_line sensor? Adding icon: does not seem to be allowed.
In my home-office I got 2k (probably) ultrawide LG monitor
I just hate the office office for the monitors
tried #frontend-archived ?
you can also try the customize entities entry in settings after that ๐
#frontend-archived, of course! ... silly me
wtf.. why the stand?
https://www.asrock.com/nettop/AMD/Mars 4000U Series/index.asp
makes no sense besides easyer pulling it of the table
cooling ๐คทโโ๏ธ maybe
oh yeah and the best about this nuc is you can run windows, osx and linux simultaneously, all with their own display. I use the Vega for osx and iGpu for windows
hmm, i started to fancy for some mini pc again... damn you
any arduino ide wizzes in here?
@crude acorn Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.
When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:
- What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
- What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
- Is the problem uniform or erratic?
- What's the exact error message?
- When did it arise?
- What exactly don't you "get"?
- Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?
Although if you're after help with creating DIY devices, #diy-archived is a better place to ask your question.
just looking for advice if anyone knows of a discord channel arduino ide compiler support. I'm pretty experienced but have a problem got me stumped.
Well I just suggested a channel to start in ๐คทโโ๏ธ
google for discord arduino shows good matches, like for example https://discord.me/arduino for the official one
not that its wrong to ask around in a sense if its related to ha stuff, the #diy-archived has had some interesting things along the way around arduino
at times i don't even google for something specific just for the sakes of discussion, i'm sure there's room for other topics as well than just trolling ๐
on the diy front i would need to build a mechanism to open windows on chicken coops.. have no idea if i want electric, pneumatic, hydraulic, magic,..
An electric stepper motor would be enough, right?
I think hydraulic/pneumatic would be overkill.
yeah brought them up just for the sake of "i'd like to use those somewhere".. bunch of option, also need to decide if i want/need it to open/close or just open.. closing would require some more sensors to ensure nobody is in between but would be useful for many situations. Manual closing is also ok as we have to visit those many times per day anyway, its all manual at the moment
Just close them slowly and hope the chickens are clever enough to move out of the way? ๐
(I know, chickens aren't clever...)
hmm, i could measure the weight of the perch and see if all are up on the smaller coop.. talk about amount of entities this ends up with ๐
maybe frigate could identify objects thought i don't have cameras on those yet..
Well you need plenty more entities to beat Tinkerer.
i can always put bt device tracker next to street ๐
hmm, need to google around a bit for motors and solutions, i'm sure this has been done 100+ times already
Why is it always when I need something I cant find it? Where did I put my google coral? Its like it has feets. I used it a couple of months ago and now its not where it should be. I think "someone" has been cleaning around my servers
this is why we use coral m-pci cards you see
hehe, you have a point. I want a tracker on every item I have
I can find it in my own mess, but when "someone" is cleaning I loose control and get a "I dont know" in return
good thing noone cleans in my garage
except me
and my daughter when she wants me to chase her
๐
hehe I say dont clean, but "someone" cant take a hint
what are you making?
Greenhouse controller
I guess thats enough
Maybe
how big is this greenhouse?
I would say 64I/O for that is enough
I am going to expand the platform to double the size this year
And make it an outdoor seating area
With more plants
thats going to be nice. Thinking of setting up a greenhouse myself
Probably got.... 15-20kgs of tomatoes last year
With little effort
I'm planting twice the amount inside this year
I guess you made it less hands on and more automation
eh, was only watering based on timing last year
more soil sensors this year, fan controls etc
and automatic refill of overflow barrel
and then there's me with a single water valve
Im automating all 4 terrariums. sunset / sunrise, misting etc.
@dusky plank dauer is dialect in Norwegian for dying
Jeg dauer ass
In German it's something to do with how long things take
A waiting time seems reasonable for the image
Or timer
Bah
Dauer = duration, as far I remember my German lessons
any tips for those water valves or the regular "google china"? I suppose i could swap over those old mechanical (or even electric) timers to something more sophisticated for the hydroponics systems, at least that would allow reacting to hot days should that be needed. They are just regular small aquarium pumps or air pumps
just got some stupid soil moisture probes from china, no idea if they are any good but since they cost almost nothing i can at least try them out
i will not have a running water around as that's over those el cheapo hoses and connectors but i can collect rain water (or fill up) tanks and pump from there or let flow if raised.. I for a moment thought to make mixing of nutriens also automated but not sure about that, not sure if i can measure the mix by any means to be correct..
(christ, i started to count lines to avoid getting bot move my text to pastebin.. ๐ ok, will shut up now)
apparently the computer I host the HA instance on isn't too happy with adding stuff. I get a lot of "Takes longer than 10s" startup messages now ๐
almost would guess a raspi with sd card ๐
did esphome recognize all the ports for you on the board.
@lapis cipher I just bought some cheapo solenoid valves on aliexpress
and a 12V pump meant for an RV
hooked to that
aye, possibly the best source when in no hurry. I've got at least some relay boards already somewhere..
need to probably do ton of orders before they start to apply vat on all orders here (june?), that's an instant 24% increase in prices, possibly added with some additional 3 eur local postal cost per packet it seems..
Worse. My 13 year old laptop with spinning rust and 1.5GHz dual core (2c/2t) CPU
AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60
2GB RAM (shared ~1.7 available). and probably some other things that make it a dumb choice
Oh, did I mention that HA is just one of 6 containers running on it? OctoPrint, influx+grafana and some webserver stuff ๐
I've got a submersible pump in a window well that's prone to flooding, hooked up to a smart switch - I've said to myself a dozen times - I should setup one of my esp8266s as a water detector to trigger the pump.
I should have done it before the torrential rains hit
It is now also very clear why this window was caulked closed when we bought the house
๐ฎ
screw netboot xyz
dnsmasq is the shit
need a fancy case for your 64 ports......i found the 32 port better for me.
i was lazy and didnt save it before i editted it for the newer board
put my backup pi4 in the case with it so i could plug it in to load HA up if my odroid poops out again
I submitted a feature request issue so I didn't forget I'm working on something
sounds like some 5am researching for me....i was thinkiing about that already
I cant order for the next week since I'll be on vacation and can't expect packages....the bad part of travelling
9 days + 3 weeks until they get that ship out
seriously?
Naw, it can't take that long
does stuff vanish on here? I was looking for the template that gave the entity summary and can't find it anymore D:
I was looking here, because I knew we chatted about it yesterday. So it should be in the history
Stuff vanishes when the people that posted it get banned. You know, just in case you were talking about it with anyone that's mysteriously absent.

well, a bunch of people talked about it. And i can still see that. But not the one that posted the script. So that might have happened
Speaking of coding magic. I just discovered the vim plugin for the IDE I use supports invoking IDE functions via mappings ๐ฎ
I know how I'll be spending every spare minute between tickets.
hm, I added 50ish sensors since yesterday ๐ I had openhab running for a while before, but HA is refreshing
Heh, someone got the banhammer? I think I copied that same entities template from them before they were booted XD
it doesnโt look that much, is that really 20000 containers?
Doesn't sound that crazy. I think the deck is lower than you'd expect. It's not right up at the top of the hull like it would be for yachts.
The photos show 24 'rows', each about 20 wide, and dog knows how deep.
lol, saw that and thought Docker
@clear ferry runs that many on his Pi cluster.
whet?
who does that?
Always remember, application process is also a chance for you to vet the compnay
we recently had an applicant tell us he's happy we don't do any kind of coding challenges. Because those a a straight nope for him ๐
I haven't had to do anything like this in a decade
my bald spot's really pronounced on this webcam
so I got that going for me
My webcam and lighting really shows how thin my hair is D:
I think they are doing a favor to no-one.Unless you got money to spend on appearances
I'm using my mirrorless camera
so, it's not a shit-tier camera
this is the first time I've been required to be on video for anything, ever
my pi was replaced by a docker container
except the one in my car
and the one that runs my sprinklers
so ONE of my Pis was replaced by a docker container
so you run raspbian in docker?
Yeah, the Pi got the dust blown off because I (thought I) needed an external DHCP server for what I wanted to do with my network topology. Is probably redundant but it's good fun to have lots of shit up and running
external as in not the one that's enabled in opnsense

Wow. Someone's put a lot of effort into that.

Hi everyone
I dont know if this is the right place to ask but:
I want to start using smart lights at my home. I like different products and I can't just stick to one brand. I like the Philips hue Play bars, I like the LIFX Beam lights, I like the nanoleafs, I think the yeelight bulbs are affordable etc...
That would on topic in #hardware-archived
thnx
I've not had to do a coding interview yet but I'd always be suspicious that I'm actually just doing their work for free.
yea you gotta watch out for stuff like that I've had an interview before where they asked for a test plan for an unreleased product to basically see how i would test....they didnt have a formal test team and never heard back after sending it in
couldn't that mean he had seen all he needed to see and walked off to tell people that you're awesome?
You've spoken to Brian before. How likely is that? ๐
how long u wait for a feedback after an interview?
I've just been assuming everyone in #the-water-cooler are savants that excel in all fields that don't entail holding a normal conversation ๐
You almost said something nice about me. I'll take it.
your animated rugged good looks have no sway over me
Rugged is an interesting way to say ugly.
I would say there are degrees

rugged could mean someone looks like they've had their nose broken twice a day since birth

It could also mean it looks like their entire face was broken multiple times.
atx is somewhere on that spectrum.
I would say it also extends to someone like ...
...
Can't actually come up with a name
aren't you polite tonight
Like everyone else on the internet, I'm trying to cover up my own self-esteem issues
I apologize ๐ฆ
you need to build up some confidence, don't go apologing from strangers, stay strong!
There's pros with the tv movies, limits the options.. spending half of the movie time already trying to pick what to watch.. Action or scifi, comedy or drama,.. I even have Borat on the line of last resort, it might be just bad?
I was going to watch the new Falcon & Winter Soldier episode but got stuck adding a shelf to my rack and adding media player pausing automations for when someone has the gall to ring my mobile phone
Same, got stuck adding new smoke detectors to ha and stuff. Need to run some real smoke tests tomorrow as rest of the family are sleeping already. Got stuck also googling why everything is Tuya and turns out that's how just is
Just tech interview things: https://twitter.com/dan_abramov/status/1375494170039742468?s=20
Could requiring knowledgeย of particular CS data structures and algorithms that arenโt often used in application-level code for an app-level position be a way for interviewers who already spent time and money on this to feel better about their choices? ๐ค No, that canโt be it...
320
If you feel like doing it now, you could always make the excuse that you thought it was important to test the family preparedness for an actual crisis
We were going to watch that tonight but it appears the missus fell asleep already ๐
haha, good idea, timing the exit and then debriefing ๐
debriefing outside in the cold, obviously
Is it even a fire drill if it's not cold and wet out?
no going back inside before everyone has shared 500 words on how they felt it went
fair weather drills do not count
this seems highly probable
I try not to be too pretentious when I'm interviewing a candidate. But our interviews are more just talking about a bunch of topics, not trying to catch people out.
people skills are so important on a team just a chat gives good indications whether somebody is fit or not
Oh, I let the managers figure out their people skills ๐
"I'm a people person!"
But for the tech part of the interview, we just have a bunch of stuff like 'tell me what you know about databases', and we just see where the conversation goes. If they're really technical, they'll start talking about the technical stuff... don't need a whiteboard exam to find that out.
we do team interviews quite a bit ie current team members join the chat with the applicant, some to the point, some just random chatting to get the feel if we can stand that person in our team room or not ๐
Well I spend 90%+ of my day not talking to people, so that doesn't matter ๐
Hmph, i need to figure out what the heck is Matt Daemon doing on Elysium as he just barely got out from Mars... Next he's probably flying with Apollo...
I enjoyed the Mars movie
I laughed when I was in Barcelona while that movie was showing
Posters everywhere with Matt Daemon
With Marte
All over them
(for non Norwegian speakers, that is just a girls name)
Marte Daemone
Also "hele Norges" Aksel Hennie had a bit part in that movie
whats it called in norwegian?
Marta?
"Hjelp, jeg er pรฅ Mars"
That was a really clever joke, btw
In the eighties a lot of movie titles were translated to roughly "Help, we're [something]"
Hjรฆlp, jeg er en fisk
Airplane! became "Help, we're flying"
hjaelp is always funny
Airplane movie is translated to "Hey we're flying" and sequel of course "Hey we're flying again"
and some similars
oh, heh missed your comment ๐
Same in Finland?
Ahh
I lolled irl
All the national lampoon movies were like that too

hjelp jeg automatiserer huset mitt
You could probably gather some blooper footage from all the users on this discord and come up with a fairly slapstick flick about home automation
or script something in the vein of the Home Alone movies
Or a proper horrible Toy Story clone with lots of smart home appliances
๐
That cat's just lulling it into a false sense of security.
Yeah, probably best not to look for any follow-up gifs of that situation
I ordered lots of monitor arms, so one day I'll be just as cool as @clear ferry
i would need to build another round on top of these two since i don't like swapping windows
not sure if arms would work, a bit tight space, just a shelf would be sufficient
Wall mount arms
kinda a bit crowded as work has taken over lots of space here
i have window behind monitors ๐
Or desk mount with tall poles and 2 arms on each
From what I could gather they seemed to save a lot of space as opposed to using the stock stands that monitors come with
Yeah they save heaps
The one I got were desk mount
They're better if you drill them into the desk too
Not at a level where bringing em down from the roof makes sense
You want them mounted a bit away from the edge of the desk
This is how a tall pole works
looks like that can be adjusted to very slim, could work here
That's how you build mission control
heh, most screen space has taken those spacex launches from multiple angles/streams ๐
how many angles?
that's how many monitors we need
- 1 monitor for weather reports
- 1 monitor for the twitter hashtag of the launch
+1 discord
public perception must be monitored and reacted to at all times
+1 for telemetry?
wish i lived in us to see that stuff live
Would be fun to see a space launch at some point, yes
I'm moving to just one big monitor plus laptop
Ultrawides are big enough for most things.
As soon as I decide on an ultrawide that's high dpi and not $2500
Dell has a new one but it's so expensive
I want something with the physical height and dpi of a 4k 27" 16x9, but wider
A lot of ultrawides are very short, crappy dpi etc
haven't checked them out but colleagues have got some of those dells and i should be eligible for one as well, been recycling displays from others mostly, swapping to new when someone happens to leave ๐
i mean, leave for real, not just home ๐
i feel i've earned them as often they left all sorts of crap behind i need to take care for the rest of my career..
Rest of your time at that company role*
Being a consultant is the best you just walk away
Yeah, one day you'll move and inherit new shit ๐
haha
Want ultrawide, but also like the productivity afforded by multiple 16:10 monitors...
Still considering Lenovo's 32:10 beast of a monitor...
I'd really love to see a 48:9 or 48:10 monitor that can be addressed as either one large screen, or three individual 16:9 or 16:10 screens
I want a single monitor in the middle
Whether thats a big monitor or an ulttawide
Definitely hate having two monitors side by side
Go with 6 cheap 16:9 screens, I did that and productivity is really nice with the possible compartmentalization
Cheaper than a superwide screen.
Not a huge fan of 16:9, tbh
16:10 was super nice back when it was popular. You got both the width of 16:9 resolutions, and the height of 4:3 resolutions
1920x1200 instead of 1920x1080.
2560x1600 instead of 2560x1440.
And you could always run those 16:9 resolutions if you wanted, 1:1
https://www.reddit.com/link/lyo367/video/ewrnxcfrhal61/player
I've set mines like this, usually have 12 windows open on the 6 monitors. side by side
My screens are 24"16:10 1200 at the moment bu
But they're way too small
Vscode feels way too compact
Resolution isn't the key it's the PPI
yes
It could almost be on r/whatcouldgowrong
I don't really know much about the bsd kernel, but like, why not ask the person who made wireguard, instead of someone who was quoted as saying they did a half assed job
I feel like you and me could have done a better job
and then "forcing" the change in the next release without checking is just crazy
Who needs code review, just merge fuckers
Aparently netgate ๐คฃ
I feel a bit sad that I got my colleage to put pfsense on his router
I have always tried to not be an opn fangirl, and said like "pf or opnsense" when people ask
