The screen "getting bright as f*" and blinding you sounds a lot more like brightness issue than a contrast issue.
Contrast can only do so much if the backlight is up too high

This is all about backlight control, which is a different thing to troubleshoot
It is annoying that the Surface seems to have two different systems both competing to set your backlight brightness, though. That was an odd choice on Microsoft / Intel's part

I would start by looking on the forums https://community.home-assistant.io There are ways to achieve it through a simple template and I think there might even be an integration that includes it out now
