That is actually a fanstasic idea @cedar chasm

Also, I hate apple stuff, but I really believe used ipads make great tabs for ha wallmounting

People here have ridiculous expectations for used prices though

you can run android on pi

i have one, it's decent for what it is

you can get a 10" touchscreen for the rpi of any flavor for like 50 bucks...

Hi all, I'm a confident scripter (and programmer), fluent in a fair number of languages but can you believe I've not dabbled in Python yet. Any i've decided to bite the bullet, and I suspect it will come naturally. Can anyone advise of a recommended IDE that I should use to get me going? I'll typically end up writing directly in sublime text editor, but to start with a recommended IDE would be best. Any suggestions guys?

dusky plank

the new kids use vscode, maybe pcharm for python specifically.
I still sometimes use sublime/textmate

burnt cave

I've used vim with Jedi and PyCharm

both are good

midnight adder

vim is my ide of choice

burnt cave

i usually go for vim for small stuff and pycharm for projects

dusky plank

vim is a text editor, as is sublime and nano. not a ide

I've taken a charm to vscode

you can compile from within vim though

vim can be an "IDE"

i wouldn't really recommend it though

inner vault

if you're going to use vim as an ide start with neovim instead so you get non-blocking threads

I have a lot of experience with programming and scripting, so I'm not a noob on that front, but the Python language is new to me. So, any pointers where I should go to get started with Python (i'm expecting that looking for "python for beginners" will be too basic) ?

surface. pro. 4

The directions in that Microsoft support article mirror this Windows Central article. It appears to be an Intel display driver setting, accessible from the Intel Graphics Command Center

#

You. don't. have. to. be. rude. about. it. sometimes. things. work. on. older. models. too. you. know...

dusky plank
#

it. does. not. TRUST ME

subtle pasture
#

Btw, the old registry tweak for the Surface Pro 4 disables Intel DPST, which also controls the backlight brightness, not the display contrast...

#

Did they just never update the Intel Graphics Command Center on the Surface Pro 4 to expose the setting in the GUI?

dusky plank
#

why do you know everything better? /s

subtle pasture
#

I just used google to determine what the old registry tweak actually did...

dusky plank
#

as I said: look it up - lots of reddit threads about that

subtle pasture
#

I am, but I had to get off of the "contrast" train first

#

This is all about backlight control, which is a different thing to troubleshoot

#

It is annoying that the Surface seems to have two different systems both competing to set your backlight brightness, though. That was an odd choice on Microsoft / Intel's part

dusky plank
#

it is annoying. yes. and you cannot for the life of me turn it off

#

it especially makes no sense to make white pages brighter and dark pages dimmer

subtle pasture
#

It's trying to mimic "dynamic contrast" like a lot of monitors/TVs have

dusky plank
#

it's doing nothing good at all

subtle pasture
#

Which does exactly that. Turns down the backlight in dark scenes to make the blacks blacker

#

But yeah, it's a feature I usually turn off (or set to the minimum level of aggressiveness), because it tends to be a bit overkill

dusky plank
#

it's shit at that

subtle pasture
#

So are most monitors / TVs 😛

dusky plank
#

it works fine with linux

#

fuck that

subtle pasture
#

It looks like this is an Intel video driver issue more than a Windows 10 issue, though Windows 10 does like to auto-update drivers

#

Rolling back to an older Intel video driver makes the registry tweak work again

dusky plank
#

I don't care, I want a friggin toggle to turn that off

subtle pasture
#

Also, if you're going Linux, and using the official Intel driver... better hope they don't implement the same functionality. lol

dusky plank
#

M$ doesn't provide it so I'm off

subtle pasture
#

It's Intel's driver doing it, not Microsoft. Why would Microsoft create a toggle for a proprietary Intel driver feature?

dusky plank
#

because the friggin registry edit worked for half a year now

#

and now it does not

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, driver issue. If you roll back to the last driver the regedit worked on, it'll do what you want

You're bitching at the wrong mega-corporation. Intel is who deserves your ire 😛

dusky plank
#

stop that misinformation

wet pilot

It's not misinformation, it's a hypothetical. If Intel were to implement DPST on their Linux driver, you'd have the same problem

dusky plank
#

yeah but at least i can turn it off there (if it was there in the first place, really big IF)

subtle pasture
#

That's an assumption, we won't know if it can be turned off until they implement it 🤷‍♀️

dusky plank
#

I doubt it.
Brightness is brightness.

#

has been shit on windows surface with windows from then until now, now it's even worse

subtle pasture

yep, windows is the best

subtle pasture
#

Hrm, just grabbed the latest version of Pop_OS on my laptop. Still no switchable graphics support 😭

dusky plank
#

Hey @subtle pasture : it's your LKJdsf Intel Driver, not PopOS!

subtle pasture
#

Not quite. It's not the driver because the driver doesn't even exist

#

No driver exists for any Linux distro that works with AMD switchable graphics

#

However, Pop_OS advertises switchable/hybrid graphics support

dusky plank
subtle pasture
#

Unfortunately, it appears to be limited to recent Intel+Nvidia systems

#

Strictly speaking, as far as Intel and AMD are concerned, it's actually the device OEM who is responsible for providing switchable graphics drivers when doing Intel integrated + AMD discreet.

#

So if anyone is to blame for the void in driver support, it's... actually HP

forest edge

No danger of any hugs in Norway, thank dog

clear ferry
#

We don't do stuff like that

#

Unless under duress

forest edge
#

yet you still had over 80k cases

#

how is that even possible lol

clear ferry
#

Because people in some parts of the country enjoy sniffing eachothers asses while intoxicated in ski resorts for some reason

#

Tbh they should be deported

cedar chasm
#

I've been living as an ascetic for a year, but a lot of people still have to live their best lives

forest edge
#

be more inclined to believe you had 100% infection rate but they just kept counting the same people recatching it over and over to even get near an 80k mark

clear ferry
#

Eh, covid restrictions have been good to me, less interactions, more home office, more family time

cedar chasm
#

lucky there's a family guy

forest edge
#

what else is there to do in norway aside from work and spending time at home?

clear ferry
#

No idea, I couldn't be bothered to do anything else

forest edge
#

not sure there is anything else

#

oh i guess you do have some tourist attractions

#

I didn't even think you had those.. just little towns with clock making shops lol

cedar chasm
#

Apart from everything you can do anywhere else by way of the internet, there are mountains and forests and coastal areas where you do stuff. Your mileage will vary.

#

There are also airports, so you can leave for a while, during peace time, anyway 😛

deft pewter
#

Airports? That's how you get from one bit of the US to another bit of the US, right? No point leaving. What's the rest of the world got to offer?

static schooner
#

who needs to go to China when you have Panda Express?

deft pewter
#

I do love Panda Express.

forest edge
#

why would you ever go to china?

#

crazy talk right there

winter wren
#

every country has a beautiful side

static schooner
#

Parts are shockingly modern and parts are delightfully old world and parts are unsettlingly authoritarian. It's a melange

deft pewter
#

Are we talking about China or the US here?

static schooner
#

there's a little China everywhere

deft pewter
forest edge
#

that must be a reall old meme

deft pewter
#

You must be a really old mean.

forest edge
#

You must be a really young bean

Getting their ARMHF drivers to compile is a bitch...

#

Me fighting with Nvidia drivers on ARM

forest edge
#

yea well that's noone's fault but your own

subtle pasture
#

Was using a powered riser because the kernel was having issues initializing bus power in a timely manner, which would result in the card trying to init AFTER it was expected to

#

@forest edge Uh... no? Nvidia provides the drivers and instructions... which do not work on many platforms

#

So I got to submit a fun little bug report so that they can figure it out smart

forest edge
#

they provide the drivers and instructions for what they intend it for

subtle pasture
#

The instructions were for generic 64bit ARM

#

Which this board is...

forest edge
#

and those drivers are a after thought some dev slapped together

subtle pasture
#

Eh? They're the Tegra drivers...

tidal bronze
#

Pretty cool stand

subtle pasture
#

3D printed it 👀

#

But yeah, some variant of this driver is on the Nvidia Shield and the Nintendo Switch.

forest edge
#

just saying, installing drivers on machines they specifically create them for is not hard by any means

subtle pasture
#

I DID eventually get it to work, but only with a Quadro. BAR space was an issue, and GeForce cards don't let you adjust BAR space (unless you have a 30 series)

forest edge
#

now they use to be a pain eons ago

subtle pasture
#

The issue is needing the EXACT right build environment, which you may or may not need to recompile your kernel to obtain

#

I got real good at recompiling kernels >_>

forest edge
#

issue is cause it's linux and everyone and thier mother builds thier own shit lol

subtle pasture
#

Trust me, I'd run FreeBSD on this board if I could, but FreeBSD on ARM is at a pretty early stage

forest edge
#

grow your third arm yet quad?

tidal bronze
#

I don't know man. Debating whether I need 2 or 4 more landscape speakers.

forest edge
#

talking about your vaccine lol

#

not your audio fetish

tidal bronze
#

Oh yes got both.

forest edge
#

I hope you have a mic hooked to all these outdoor speakers. can't wait for the day you accidently turn that on and your whole neighborhood hears you grunting on the toliet

tidal bronze
#

I would consider them lucky

subtle pasture
#

3rd arm sounds handy. Where does it grow from?

forest edge
#

if my neighbor had speakers everywhere outside I would toss critter feed in thier yard every day, moles, squirrels and most of all loose dogs who love to chew on shit lol

tidal bronze
#

I am rarely home. They can suffer a bit. Plus most of them are into blues just like me. No harm done.

tidal bronze
#

Although I don't know whether they appreciate a little loud yoyo ma on Sunday mornings. Lol

forest edge
#

if you are rarely home why the hell have all this crap? lol

#

you plan to retire in this house? thought you were moving to vegas lol

tidal bronze
#

Hmm. This one is in the keep list. 😆 nopes no plans to move.

#

Even if I do will be to KC

forest edge
#

i'm sure, seems like every other cali is

#

then you will be like all of them asking how do you drive in snow lol

tidal bronze
#

Yeah right. Did you see a Dr to get meds for anti dark plates syndrome

forest edge
#

they won't be keeping them for long. people already bitch around here at those who do that michgan or whatever bs where they use a loop hole to keep from paying property taxes on vehicles

tidal bronze
#

Let me see what your plates looks like.

forest edge
#

our plates are generic

tidal bronze
#

Oh boy.

#

Yep I would stick to CA plates. 😆

forest edge
#

till a law passes where you were forced to switch lol

#

I bet they get pulled over from time to time

#

I don't see how they wouldn't

subtle pasture
#

I'm a fan of the back/yellow CA plates, for sure

#

The white/blue ones are meh

tidal bronze
#

They are nice

#

I like the whale tale as well.

forest edge
#

whale tail?

tidal bronze
forest edge
#

lol

#

shouldn't that be like a dude dragging a mantis out of the water onto the coast?

forest edge
#

man youtube videos are just getting worse and worse lol

short lion
#

I need to figure out a way to remind me to drink water that I won't just ignore

short lion
#

What I need is a faucet installed beside my chair

#

No excuses if I don't have to get up to get water

#

Dehydration -> headache

static schooner
#

a beer faucet? Now we're talkin'

jade tartan
#

is there a way i can check the temp of my pi?

#

within HA?

forest edge
#

a few ways

jade tartan
#

whats the easiest?

#

lol

#

saying im half retarded would be giving me 60% more then i should

forest edge
#

I would start by looking on the forums https://community.home-assistant.io There are ways to achieve it through a simple template and I think there might even be an integration that includes it out now

dusky plank
#

this channel is for 💩 posting @jade tartan

#

you should know that by now

jade tartan
#

im posting, so it automatically qualifys as a shit post

#

LOL

forest edge
#

odd I thought the power checker did the temp, don't see it listed

dusky plank
#

I could give you a 2 second solution in the right channel but 🤷‍♂️

forest edge
#

oh well

jade tartan
#

dont you channel nazi me, remember im dumb, i cant be expected to figure out these "channels" is that what you call them?

#

like

dusky plank
#

I can remember you and I will

#

💩

forest edge
#

derp system moniter added

jade tartan
#

on the real tho, half the time i dont know which thing is asked in which channel and then if you ask in the wrong one and it's a 1 second answer people dont answer so it's like do you want me to post that question in each channel?

forest edge
#

thats why the checker dosen't have it anymore heh

jade tartan
#

so then i get discouraged and stop trying

jade tartan
#

yeah

jade tartan
#

completely my own fault im sure, but sometimes coming here seems more like calling an ISP's customer line

#

you get shuffled around and never really get a straight answer unless your "in the know"

forest edge
#

lol well I did give an answer, a couple infact

dusky plank
#

you guessed it right first time 👏 don't be so boring @jade tartan

jade tartan
#

i was looking for system monitor anywhere in addon's but couldnt find anything, im going to try looking into intigrations? but the point being im not a wiz at HA so anything i end up wanting to do is me learning from scratch, oh well ive made it this far
