I mean, yeah, they want you to use Java
Do people still use Java? I thought .NET was the way now?
Yeah, I vastly prefer C# / .Net
it's pretty damn hard to beat performance-wise
I've barely touched C# and I still prefer it. Did Java through uni and it was... ๐คข
Uh... usually C# is considered considerably faster than Java...
And because C# and Java are rather similar, there are actually automatic code converters to jump from Java to C# for the performance gains
man, touching my dice profile was a bad idea
phone's been ringing non-stop
I haven't touched .NET in close to 20 years tho
Is there any open source thermostat projects, that include support for multiple room sensors?
.net core is the best!
C# is awesome!
The .net core has superior performance over traditional .net standard.
It's also fully cross-platform ^
.net core 5 fwiw
Nice to see PowerShell make the jump to Linux, BSD, and OSX, as well
PowerShell script > Bash shell script, any day
Powershell core is a really good project fair play
Filthy PowerShell should stay on Windows where it belongs.
What's all that nonsense about importing modules about? Why can't I just use everything that's installed?
Speaking of performant languages... I'm halfway through building a desktop app in JavaScript ๐
Why learn a sensible desktop language when I can use Electron?
And... the crappy beta version is done. Tray app that handles volume control via MQTT, since IoTLink shits the bed when you try to use its audio module.
You can tell PowerShell to import whatever modules you want at startup, so... You can in-fact do that
Same way Python works, and nobody complains about python imports
Lemme know when Bash gets updated a scripting interface from this century ๐คฃ
Truth hurts. People already use Python everywhere because Bash shell scripts suck so hard, why not PowerShell?
i use this on my *NIX boxes
because powershell sucks hard as f. that thing is so deam awarked
And somehow Bash is still worse...
mounting a nfs in powershell as a example - i mean holy crap
using powershell for data syence, ok i have no clue
powershell for system administration, holy cow
you mean it's not just 'mount nfs://0.0.0.0.'?
You're missing a local path to mount it to, there
interesting
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -FeatureName ServicesForNFS-ClientOnly, ClientForNFS-Infrastructure -Online -NoRestart
New-PSDrive Z -PsProvider FileSystem -Root \\10.40.1.1\export\isos -Persist
ufff
@hearty depot not a fair comparison
That command actually INSTALLS the entire NFS client
Then goes on to configure a mount point
It's in the component store, so it comes with windows
So it's physically on your hard disk, but it's not enabled by default
Hence "Windows optional feature"
that's even worse
Not really
why disable a feature by default?
No need to have the ports open or the service running if you're not using NFS
client opens ports?
well, thats how I have to use powershell
how to do this in bash
yum install -y nfs-common
echo "storage02.local:/ /mount nfs4 rw 0 0" >> /etc/fstab
mount -a``` tada
sudo !!
Your edit still fails...
i have sudo !! symlinked to s
I'm root anyway ๐
nah wont work out because of the redirection
you can do this with an cat EOF
You either have not enough sudo, or too much sudo
=never enough sudo
I kinda love how you managed to write perfectly valid PowerShell, but invalid Bash...
While bashing PowerShell
chef's kiss
I just want to say, bash is love
Powershell is JuStSomeHOwStranGe \
isn't powershell case insensitive?
Optionally case sensitive. Defaults to off
so i have file and fiLe, how does standard config handle this?
the powershell sript i pasted above, will this persist on reboots?
No, they're missing the persist flag. One tweak would make it persist
Also, when running on Linux, the solution they used in Bash also works in PowerShell
So there's literally no difference...
reminds me, I have to build a windows server cloud image -_-
I'm honest here - windows just feels hard for me
at the end of the day, thry both achieve the same thing and it's dealers choice
Except not... PowerShell is actually a real time C# interpretor. It can import full .net objects and work with them
Bash... Doesn't extend that far
You want to do that with Bash, you're calling another language inside your script to get the job done
dealers choice
then you can compare awk to powershell too
It's more apt to compare it with Python, honestly
linux is built on the premise build one tool to do one thing "looking at you systemd"
Though at least PowerShell doesn't make indentation part of syntax. I hate that shit...
glares at Python
wanted to configure cluster, ended up bitching about powershell ๐คฃ f. me
@midnight adder then some smarmy upstart comes along and confuses it all
smamry upstart, that's my name
I am pretty sure it is Henry B

Hello! anyone here that knows pzem004t on tasmota?

seems to be GitHub discussions for tasmota now
I just came for the hugging cat gif
Nais, it was a good day, after all ๐
every day is a good day

Such trippy, wholesome cat goodness
woah, pass the multivitamins!
Got no vitamins, sorry. Want some molly?
Frankly, I think that gif is laced in it already, so I'm good thank you!
I feel a storm brewing in my watchtower
something tells me mqtt is going to be unavailable in the morning
I don't know that there is a new image out, it's just sort of in the air that something's going to go boom tonight
Cats ๐ค
I haven't known many cats well but they seem alright
That's one of them there cat ladies
I should buy a ceiling mount vesa thing, so I can get a fourth monitor
You definitely should
Yep.
Yep.
Right, that's sorted then.
Well, I have groceries coming between 06:00 and 11:00, so I should take the first sleep-shift
Sleep shifts? ๐ฎ
Well, I'm picturing waking up at roughly 05:50 to check my phone to see how I'm doing in the delivery queue
6AM delivery that's early.
then maybe catching some delayed snooze action for good measure
6am is way too early. I think the only people out that early here are milkmen and doggers.
There's always someone starting work earlier than you think, is my experience
Any time you are on a flight that leaves at x o'clock, someone got there 2 hours earlier to do all the procedures and check people in
I've done warehouse jobs where I started at 5am. Wife's worked in airport jobs and started even earlier. I still wouldn't expect a delivery that early ๐คทโโ๏ธ
24 hours shifts were fun too. And I don't mean 24 hour patterns... I mean the occasional 24 hour long shift where people didn't turn up for their shifts and I had to cover ๐
That's when you start to question the meaning of it all
That's me a lot of the time. At least now I know there's a word for it.
I'm going to try to refrain from leaning into my ๅฃๅฏใใ from tomorrow, and onwards
Things have gotten.. slightly.. out of hand
2 hours earlier to check in ? Space X ?
International flights definitely has 'someone' showing up 2 hours beforehand, even if the counters aren't manned
Well ladi-daa ๐ XD
Makes no sense but .....
Now, forgive me if i presume too much, but I am going to venture a guess that you are paged a lot over the PA, by staff asking that you 'kindly make yourself known at gate xyz, which is closing 10 minutes ago'
My in-laws never have that problem. Mother in-law is so worried about being late that they were once an entire day earlier arriving to a port for a ferry ๐
They only realised when there was no-one else queuing... nothing was scheduled to leave that day.
While that is taking it to the extreme, I respect the effort ๐
Well, all this talk of flights is science fiction these days anyway, so I'm sorry I brought it up
International ones, anyway
Not really. ๐คฃ in a flight right now.
Are you a moon person ๐ฎ
I'm about ready to get on a flight to somewhere else the moment we have our vaccines sorted though
in flight? ๐ค wings flapping?
Some what. Too excited to get back home to LA. ๐คฃ
so stuffed up a ducks ass and helping when needed ๐ก
Times like these is when living in the US would be a plus. Flying between states takes you somewhere different, with less worry of suddenly getting slapped with some horrendous lockdown situation
@cedar chasm yes different alright. ๐
@subtle pasture BTW no Corp type gives you complete protection. People think that but hardly the case.
Just a myth.
Lol Leapo
I'm aware, you can absolutely fuck up and mix your personal assets with your company assets in a way that makes you liable
Which is why you have the personal attorney I mentioned earlier >_>
Not only. Everyone forgets to mention legal expenses just to defend, isolated finances or not.
Easier to fuck up with an LLC than with an S-corp, but I hear ya'
Is this fucking ladder logic?
Ah, so worse than ladder logic...

We attempt to compile and run a simple FORTRAN program on our vintage 1959 IBM mainframe computer at the Computer History Museum. FORTRAN is a big stretch for this business oriented machine, with 16k memory and a CPU not meant at all for scientific applications. Even integer multiply and divide instructions are an optional feature on the base ...
They actually got the IBM 1401 to run fortran ๐
Took about 20 minutes to process a table of floats. Heh
Quick than I could do it mentally ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Yes, however, you also don't take up an entire room
Was trying to be charitable, yeesh >_>
If someone was charitable with some fried food right about now I might suffer a coronary.

My place in the grocery delivery line-up has been decided. Between 07:10 and 08:15.

Can an m.2 connector be built to support both SATA and PCIe, depending on whatever is plugged in?
im confused by your question. why would u have a m2 connector setup for sata?
why not? m.2 can do PCIe, SATA or USB
lots of m.2 sata drives around
NVMe drives are faster because they use PCIe
hmm guess i cant help i thought only m2 ports could only accept m2 devices
are u talking about a m2 to sata adapter?
no
M.2, formerly known as the Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF), is a specification for internally mounted computer expansion cards and associated connectors. M.2 replaces the mSATA standard, which uses the PCI Express Mini Card physical card layout and connectors. Employing a more flexible physical specification, the M.2 allows different module...
sata to m2?
"Buses exposed through the M.2 connector are PCI Express 3.0 & newer, Serial ATA (SATA) 3.0 and USB 3.0"
m.2 is not a protocol
it's a connector type
thats why im asking if u need a adapter
no i'm looking at a cheap case claiming to do both SATA and PCIe
and i didnt know thats possible
link pls
closed the window
but the product wont solve the question
๐
it was on aliexpress. they'll say anything.
just not sure if it's possible
and i dont know enough about the m.2 connector to know if it would be possible.
yeah i wanted to see what u were talkin about
well like u said its just a connector im sure there are adapter for everything
what is the problem ur trying to solve
"is it possible for an m.2 socket to accept either PCIe devices or SATA devices, or must the manufacturer make a choice between the two when soldering the socket?"
i guess that means it can support both protocols, but not both at the same time ... the device plugged in will select it?
yeah seems that way but i cant find any sata to m2 adapter or pcie to m2
how would you connect it then?
you can buy an m.2 ssd that speaks sata (WD Green, Blue) or an m.2 ssd that speaks pcie (WD Black)
lets say u had a sata u wanted in your m2 port. what would u use to connect them
yeah m2 to sata and m2 to pcie
you're talking about SATA the connector, i'm talking about SATA the protocol ๐
the adapter would translate is if needed
well to answer u question yes u can adapt a m2 to other protocols such as usb, sata, pcie, blah blah
but not the other way around which is what i though u wanted
no need to adapt
m.2 suppots usb, sata, pcie out of the box
the protocols, that is
supports*
well good luck trying to put a sata cable on a m2 drive
you're still confusing connectors and protocols
an m.2 drive has an m.2 CONNECTOR, and uses it to either speak PCIe or SATA to the host
there is no need for an adapter
i was as confused as you 24 hours ago ๐
from Wikipedia: "The M.2 specification provides up to four PCI Express lanes and one logical SATA 3.0 (6 Gbit/s) port, and exposes them through the same connector so both PCI Express and SATA storage devices may exist in the form of M.2 modules."
quick google search i got this
"If youโre planning on going with an M.2 drive while building or upgrading your gaming PC, itโs important to note whether youโre getting a SATA-based drive or an NVMe-based drive. Your motherboard might not have the appropriate M.2 slots for both types (SATA and NVMe M.2 drives are often keyed slightly differently), and even if it does, you donโt want to waste money on a pricier NVMe drive if the motherboard youโve chosen can only access data using the SATA protocol (not every motherboard allows for PCIe data transfers)."
m.2 SATA drives exist but have little benefit over a 2.5-inch form factor
the manufacutre will pin it out to tell the mobo the correct protocol to use
agreed
im all nvme here
little benefit except being slightly cheaper
i have no use for NVMe, all my hardware is too old to support the speeds
I don't go beyond USB 3.0 / SATA-3
ur hardware too slow but u have a m2 port?
i dont have an m.2 port ... i'm looking at being an SSD enclosure. an m.2 enclosure that supports NVMe over PCIe is 50% more than one that supports SATA.
the enclosure then translates either pcie or sata to USB
it's a small price difference, and the SSD sticks themselves are also quite similar in price. so there is no real reason not to get anything other than NVMe.
my question was simply for learning .... as i didnt know m.2 can support both protocols
the wikipedia page about m.2 is informative
Well ssd size value is still better than nvme. If you arenโt going to take advantage of the faster speeds then nvme seem uneccesary
not if you get sticks in the m.2 form factor, they're the same price
Itโs support being backwards compatible. In case you have a m2 drive and no m2 port
true
i've seen the adapters
i like the m.2 2280 sticks because they fit right next to a Raspberry Pi 4 in a 3.5-inch drive bay
Yeah if ur down in the sub 2tb range ur right
hehe
i'm annoying the smallest SSD i can buy is 256GB
i would get 32 if they had them
Just buy a sd card and a sd card reader
it's a Pi running Home Assistant
Got yourself a tiny ssd
I've had too many SD cards die on me
Why not just upgrade ur pi sd to 512 then
i cant find small SSD's! everything available for me is 256 and up
i could do that, but whats the point when you use less than 16GB ๐
Get a Evo sd
So confused ur say ur trying to put m2 then ur saying you donโt need more than 16gb.
oh a 512GB SD card ... sorry i misread that
hehe
i dont need more than 16gb, but i wont use SD cards because they keep dying on me
so ... SSD it is
Good luck
i've got SSD running on other Pi's
but getting a new one now and figuring out the storage for it
i actually had a Pi running DISKLESS yesterday
but Docker doesnt run over NFS
or rather OverlayFS doesnt run over NFS
Eh? NVMe drives have been at price parity with SATA drives for a long time now
not really above 2tb
Only because NVMe drives are limited on PCB space above 2tb, though qlc drives are close
Also, if you're taking about 4 and 8TB drives, even SATA disks are prohibitively expensive...
yes but thats subjective
Actually, I just looked... Even 4TB NVMe drives are within $20 of their SATA counterparts
8TB is where the price parity breaks...
So yeah, I stand by my point. Unless you're, specifically, buying an 8TB drive, NVMe drives have been at price parity with SATA drives for a long time now.
what ever make u feel better about urself
It's just the truth? You can go search Amazon and see ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Prices are similar all the way up the stack, until 8TB
And that's a good thing, IMHO. SATA is kinda a massive dead-end standard...
Sucked to hear about your ISPs bandwidth throttling the other day, @subtle pasture
Is there not much competition where you live?
Pretty much. My options are Comcast Cable (1.2 Gbps) or AT&T DSL (25 mbps)
Both of them have caps, and charge per-gigabyte after you exceed your monthly allotment

So it actually makes more sense to buy a NAS than attempt large cloud backups, which is kinda absurd
We have that for cellular based services
My cell phone has unlimited LTE bandwidth. Lol
Yeah, we had 6 months of caps in 98 on fixed broadband, wasn't very popular
Consumers have basically capless mobile subscriptions, my wife usually has 60GB with all the rollovers
I could pay an extra fee to Comcast to remove the cap...
Well, if you pay for it you get something approaching unlimited LTE, but beware of fineprint
But I don't blow it often enough for that to pan out financially
With my work subscription I am limited to 15GB per month, no rollover
There's also Comcast Business Internet, for 3x the price
I usually use 20-25G a month on mobile, I just charge my employer for the extra data packs ๐คฃ
But it comes with 5 static IPv4 addresses, so I guess that's nice?
Eh, I haven't had any use for static ips ever tbh, don't need to run mail servers at home or anything
Had 8 IPs available since 2000 atleast
Think my current ISP gives me 6
Dynamic mind you
Running your own mail server is just pure pain anyway...
Exactly
๐คข
Dude, vomit somewhere else
Even Google runs Exchange in the cloud for enterprise email
The don't run their own gsuite? But it is so great ๐คฃ
You want Exchange Active Sync support from Google cloud services? It's Exchange. Lol
Which is probably why they removed EAS support from their free tier
Microsoft still offers it to free tier, though. That's nice.
Exchange and 365 is king for corporate and collaboration, but for my personal stuff, protonmail
I still see customers using lotus' suite
Fuck that is shit
I just hooked my own domain into Azure and called it a day ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Do they still show that on Tv2?
If I want background noise I'll just open up NRK on my apple TV and do direct stream
Works, I guess
There's been a lot of YouTube going while I need idle noise lately
But also just some long form tv drama eps that I have either seen or don't particularly care about
I do 60 minutes and watch the interesting segments only while my daughter is "cooking" in her kitchen ๐คฃ

My daughter on the other hand just wants to come with me into the music studio, or bang on my keyboard in my office
And she loves watching the 3d printer work
"daddy printing?" ๐คฃ

Hillarious
So I found this for a laugh: https://www.inupathy.com/en/
But actually, if it could be integrated into HA one might be able to automate some form of entertainment for a pet while away
provided it's not all baloney
Or if the dog is agitated or in distress, you could get a notification, but I suppose the supplied app might already do that
I don't have a dog, so not my hill to die on, but anyone that sees this can feel free to run with the idea
There might even be raccoon applications for the technology

When all the streaming services crack down on account sharing
https://c.tenor.com/X_uVRlWQU-EAAAAM/disney-movies.gif
eh, with the mountain of content out there, I can't be bothered about staying current on where to pirate things.
To each, their own though. Have fun on the open seas
Even Spotify doesn't have all music, though, unless they do now
haven't been paying attention
I would need Netflix, Stan, Disney, Prime and Foxtel to cover 90% of the shows I watch
Plus I'd need to also purchase some shows outright
You're not wrong, it would be expensive
Or Usenet. Sorted ๐
There's a relationship between cost and piracy that businesses don't seem to acknowledge. When you end up having to spend $50+ a month just to watch your favourite shows, a lot of people will turn to the dark side.
Hell, there's content that's not even available on streaming, so where do you turn for that?
We pay for Prime already (not just for TV), Disney+ for the missus, Netflix for us both. I'm not paying more than that.
Haha. Sky sucks ๐
Cable/satellite is a rip-off.
Now, I know Usenet has been the held up for ages by people in the know as the one-stop shop for content but what is it actually?
It's kinda like an older form of Limewire/Napster but it's not P2P. People upload 'articles' to a message board, you search for them and download them. Only articles don't have to be text, they can be binaries.
Cost and convenience both play into it, I think
You can get malware anywhere. I haven't come across any on Usenet ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Yup. I find it way more convenient to have all my media in one place on my PC. Hate switching apps and searching for stuff.
I want all my content in one place. The media industry failed at that, and hard, when they started pulling programming off of netflix
when my internet dies because it rained satTV still works... I should read huh
So someone is footing the bill for the storage space?
Most of the media I have is probably available on the services we pay for. They're just so annoying to use.
Like, sure, launch your own streaming platform, but DON'T pull your content off of other streaming services if you don't want it pirated
Yes... but you pay for access, so they're not doing it out of charity.
It's a little complicated because there's multiple pieces to it. You'll want to subscribe to an indexer (the 'search engine') and access to download from somewhere too. Maybe $100/year if done cheaply.
Oh, DMCA do go after them. It's just not very effective ๐
i wonder if they make or loose money from having a fleet of lawyers DCMA everything always
So it's a shell game of sorts, where an attack has as of yet been unsuccessful
Between Usenet and torrents, there's very little you can't find. Usenet gets weird though... some people sub to multiple services in case one service doesn't have the articles they want.
Yeah, usenet requires you pay for access to a Usenet Service Provider, and then you'll often also need to pay for access to news servers
I almost gave up when looking into Usenet and I'm pretty tech savvy. It's not intuitive at all... but once set up, it's amazing.
However, the annual fee for all of the above is cheaper than a year of Spotify, so...
i wonder if anyone went 'damn, my service of choice got taken down, guess i'll sign up for hbo max'
@deft pewter Supernews + NZBGeek + NZBGet is a good start... and tie it into Sonarr / Radarr
The real issue with Usenet is retention. Stuff gets re-uploaded constantly because articles that are over a year old start to die
i'll have to look this up
Don't have to, sonarr and radarr just fetches stuff for me, I just tell it to and it obeys like a little slave
I should get an invite to nzbplanet somehow

This
It's nice being able to pop open Plex and have a list of "recently added" content that's nothing but my favorite movies/shows, with all of the commercials removed
The TV/Movie industry needs to wise up to what the record industry figured out ages ago
You all do the whole Radarr/Sonarr setup?
Put your content on as many platforms as possible
do you host locally or externally ?
Yes
Local. I run a few virtual machines for everything
i need more space to do this effectively, i 'only' have 3tb of space in my local server
doggo
I wound up buying a used NAS for $1500 (drives included)
though a single 10tb drive is 2 months of sky so eh?
I only have a 4TB drive for media. I'd prefer not to delete stuff but I just compromise by deleting stuff I know I'll never watch again.
40TB usable space, after parity
I get by with 4x10 + 3x6 +3x2 in my NAS, plus a few ssds for intensive stuff, and some jbod in my second server
i need to deal with my glacial internet first
Mine's currently 12x4TB
atx keeps promising to send me some HPE hardware but it never appears.

None of the stores that had that vesa ceiling mount are open

Similar stores have drive though
But of course not them

No, monitor above my desk

Just use a monitor arm?
I already have three arms
Get a fourth
So need to use the ceiling
Norway has legal limit of 3 arms per desk?
you have a need for all these monitors that alt tab can't do?

it says delivery in 3-7 days
whats the cost?
$7

Earlier this week our gov tried something silly here which some of the courts didn't enjoy likewise: shopping on appointment. The idea was to have only 1 person in a shop at the same time for say 30 minutes.
It's silly because while everything was kept shut except grocery, the figures went up. They now decided this is unfair practice and in some states it's now business as usual (with some rules of course)
I'm still wondering who profits most from this crisis....
healthcare
probably...
and the government saving a tonne in not paying as many pensions
my 87 year old grandad said that
but if this is all biased towards big pharma i wonder why the gov didn't just say f*ck it and just do nothing.

ah perfect
The helmets amplify frequency bands that coincide with those allocated to the US government between 1.2 Ghz and 1.4 Ghz. According to the FCC, These bands are supposedly reserved for ''radio location'' (ie, GPS), and other communications with satellites (see, for example, [3]). The 2.6 Ghz band coincides with mobile phone technology. Though not affiliated by government, these bands are at the hands of multinational corporations.
Yeah, their conclusion is funny.

Probably depends on the NUC you buy.
If you want something you can upgrade, build a real PC.
If this is just for HA and other miscellaneous apps, an NUC is plenty. If you want to do video encoding or incorporate a NAS, build a real machine.
I'm happy with my NUC for low-power stuff. It's tiny and consumes almost no power.
i want it for a dhcp server, adguard, and HA
Then an NUC is fine and you don't care about having tons of RAM.
my RPi was sitting at 95% ram usage
define almost no power
ah that's fine
Even at ยฃ160, it's gonna pay for itself in the electricity it saves in the first year.
This is only a Celeron ๐
but a LOT more recent
That's with Hyperion running at all times (it's currently transcoding) and about 8 Docker containers (including HA and AdGuard Home).
seems resonable
Yeah. No need for a fancier processor if you're not running something like Plex off it.
no
If I ever build a NAS, that'll become my media server too.
Shift some of the crap off my main PC so it becomes gaming/dev machine instead of a hodge podge of everything.
and even if i was running plex. it\d not be transcoding it'd be direct stream
You hope. Some people have trouble with device profiles.
But yeah, if all goes to plan, direct stream will be fine.
plex is odd
Sure is. I'm trying to get it to match Wonder Woman 1984 but it's throwing a tantrum because it's got two years in the file name (1984 and 2020) ๐
lol
Bazarr did fine and grabbed the subs...
you know sky are trying to charge for a HD version of that, not even 4k
they're mad
Sky are idiots. PPV is a ridiculous idea, even during the pandemic.
Disney tried to pull the same shit... and unfortunately, I think enough people paid that they're going to keep doing it.
Mulan and Raya both released as a 'premium' item before general availability... which is a massive con when you're already paying a monthly sub to see everything.
๐
This is why I refuse to go cable/satellite. We don't even watch terrestrial TV, since we disagree with a thinly veiled tax that funds a single shitty organisation.
yeah i'm going to cancel my 'tv license' when i can cancel my sattv
though i'm going to keep iptv - naughty naughty
Meh. The way the license is worded, you only need to pay if you either receive TV in realtime or stream BBC shows (realtime or delayed). If you're happy avoiding the BBC, it's fine.
Can't remember the last time I wanted to watch a BBC show anyway.
@clear ferry, on the other hand, loves BBC.
BBC shows are very sucky
Right. Finally got Plex to untwist its knickers. Off to run some chores.
BBCBBW you say
qrencode is a nice little app
@deft pewter @deft pewter @deft pewter @deft pewter @deft pewter @deft pewter @deft pewter

You can also use it to take 2fa secrets into scanable codes
Yeah, but you can't use them everywhere =/
qrencode -tANSI -m1 -o- 'otpauth://totp/Google:myaccount?secret=beepboopbop&issuer=Google'
handy for storing them in pass or whatever
ugh, also darn that woman for now making me feel like my beepboopbop is transphobic
Noice
alternatively just store the secret string and use oathtool --totp --base32 $secret to get the 6 digit totp code

Yeah BBC looks like a no from me dawg. Especially anything made this millennium
Doctor Who was fun for a long time, until the budget got too big
The only BBC show I really enjoyed was Sherlock and it appears they're not making any more now that Bananaman Cummerbund is Hollywood famous.
You're special.
Which isn't BBC ๐
Then please insert [success]
no
Kinda my point. There's naff all that I'm interested in on BBC. Happy to forego the license.
Doctor Who went downhill after Tennant. Smith, Capaldi and Whittaker all try too hard.
i quite like whittaker in it actually but i never liked Doctor Who
Tennant was my Doctor but that's why we have so many of them
Meh. She goes too far with the commoner routine.
so you can have your own
she's from up tut north
She's a frigging Timelord(lady?) and acts like she's one of the locals.
lots of places have a north
Except Australia.
there's a northern part of aus?
yes, it's called the north pole
that's the northern part of everywhere really
if we go by "true north chauvinist" rules
makes sense if you think about it
even more if you don't

I quite like British panel shows though

Comedy... ๐คข
very bbc
I'll take those over most current sit-coms
The only comedy I've seen recently and enjoyed was that Tag movie.
Well I'm glad you got some comedic release ๐
Granted, "comedy" is a lot better when inherent funniness can creep into otherwise serious story matter
Like car crashes and murders?
Well, you had to be there
Reminds me of the time I saw someone lose their head. Literally. ๐ค
Hmm, well that's taking it a bit further than I envisioned
You just have a weak imagination ๐
true
Although I'll have to admit I do too... I don't know what to call this app I'm building.
๐ค
you're welcome
Are you happy with Electron, then? Was there much of a learning curb?
I work with NodeJS already, so the only bits to learn are the Electron-specific API's. It's got some weird patterns in place to safely call Node stuff from the front-end and to interact between front- and back-end components.
I'll share this on GitHub when I get a bit further and you can take a look. Trying to make it something that anyone can install and enter their own config.
If I can sort out suitable GitHub Actions, I can even get it to build releases so you can just grab an executable.
Gonna polish the UI a bit more, then add start on login behaviour to it.
All it does for now is control PC volume via MQTT but I'll probably find other things I want to add to it. I gave up on IoTLink, so I might add PC shutdown to this too.
Polish UI might be hard for some of us, </lousy>
Nie
Yup, gonna file that right in the trash.
Catchy. Rolls off the tongue.

I suppose that's starting in the right end
Of course if you came up with a snazzy name and some buzzwords we might be able to find you some VC

How am I doing so far? ๐
I wish home assistant blu had WiFi.
WiFi servers... ๐คข
Yea but ha blu is almost consumer friendly enough to just like buy and ship to a non techie end user
Sure... and if they're non-techie, you'll get endless calls from them asking why it's dropping off the network.
Most consumer hubs need an ethernet connection because that's just sensible for an kind of always-on server.
Unless apparently you bought the current generation of Google WiFi, which only has one network port - for the WAN
Well it is Google WiFi. You didn't expect ethernet, did you? ๐
And even 'non-techie' people need to know a certain amount if they're expecting to automate their homes. There's no plug-and-play solution out there that doesn't take some fiddling.
There's a reason that traditionally you've had to pay thousands for someone to install for you if you can't do it yourself. It ain't easy.
Well Iโm dumb cuz a blu wouldnโt work for what I need to do anyway. I need to get modbus communication into it.
So a hat and a custom case and some additional preprogramming
My employer is having a hard time rolling an monitoring app out for their home battery, Iโm trying to get them to embrace HA as the solution instead.
They have seen success in moving tech support over to discord so maybe this will happen too
Sounds like cutting corners to me. Businesses should probably be using something more stable than HA and Discord ๐
HA is great but it's definitely more of an enthusiast thing.
We still do phone and email support but Discord letโs us also support customers with non urgent questions, in a team environment where everyone can get up to speed on the question/issue
Sometimes that isnโt what is best, so we kick it to a phone or email at that point
HA is more of a stretch
But customers want to monitor our product and we donโt have a great solution
Discord for non-urgent? As a customer, I'd expect to get a far quicker answer via chat than via any other channel.
Email is non-urgent.
Generally the urgent customers are old school
Or just old ๐
Yea sometimes unschooled
Problem with making our own app is that support issue as well
So Iโd prefer the app to not be part of the company to reduce the support
That's a... strange view. You'll just tell customers that it's not your problem?
That'll go down well.
Yea thatโs the concern
Not tell them itโs not our problem
But that itโs not our software so if they want to configure it to their home and play with it, itโs their responsibility
We make batteries that go with solar, and there is an industry problem of too many monitoring systems. So this is a path where we donโt need to be directly responsible for supporting our own app, and pushes the customers down a road that has features they want, like comprehensive home monitoring and potential for energy automation.
Sounds to me like they should use Blu and we need to develop a compatible WiFi feather dodad.
Just create one standard to rule them all
Thatโs definitely an issue we deal with, to get our battery to talk to various manufacturers inverters directly
Like itโs all mod bus or canvas but the registries are scrambled, so they use a matrix to decode it. Fun stuff
@cedar chasm I've named it and pushed it. Not tested the start on login functionality yet, since I don't want to log out right now. https://github.com/jlweston/bifrost
I'll work out the GitHub Actions stuff soon. There's no release for you to download but you can have a nosey through the code.
I don't know the particulars of your field but providing off the shelf solutions, with a commercial entity behind it seems like the route that leads to the least tears, mr JohnCSolar
I am indeed nosy, thank you ๐
๐คทโโ๏ธ
Well, I'd hardly count myself a developer, but I recognize enough to see that Electron keeps it's promise of being Javascript/HTML/CSS.
Very interesting, and definitely the shape of things to come, if not as they are this very day!
You're already using Electron apps ๐
Fairly confident Discord is, as is VS Code.
this very app ๐ฎ
MS Teams too, I think.
It's coming from inside the house
It used to be considered slow and bloated. It's come a long way.
good stuff, thumbs up
Yeah Leapo said Teams as well
and Slack
though reports are that they seem stuck in the bad old days of Electron
I was going to say I might take coding back up again, once I feel secure in my work situation, but truth be told there's not much I would want to use it for at the moment
I did a couple of Android apps for personal use early on in the pandemic, but nothing I really want or need now
Go for it. It's really fulfilling knowing that you can create something to solve problems.
Yeah, it was, it is
when the need arises, I'll ham-fist some code
๐ โ
For now, I get the same satisfaction from hammering out yaml-automations, though I know that won't attract much venture capital in itself
Eh. I don't expect to profit from anything I do. That's what the day job is for.
Same page as me, then
Looks like the GH Action worked: https://github.com/jlweston/bifrost/releases/tag/v1.1.0
Might write a readme later if I cba. It's pretty basic - if you've worked with MQTT before, it should be simple enough, @cedar chasm
Chrome flagged your file as something 'not commonly downloaded' XD
Modern browsers are such overbearing creatures
Well it's right. It's literally the first time you've tried downloading it.
It's making it out to be the first time anyone has downloaded it
which also might be true
It probably is. Unless someone beat you to it when I shared the link.
I built it locally, I don't need to download it ๐
'Submit' doesn't seem to do anything ๐
If it doesn't say it's done anything, it worked ๐
The UX is pretty crappy atm but the app is functional.
Excellent ๐
Use something like MQTT Explorer to watch the base topic you supplied.
I meant to make the window hide when you set it up successfully, forgot to add it in. I'll probably also have it change to a different page when you open it later too.
Base topic actually needs to be supplied though, just leaving it as is results in Invalid MQTT config! on submit
Yeah, all needs to be supplied. Sue me.
Can't afford to, so I'll just thank you for your efforts ๐
I'll tweak it at some point. Or I won't. Either way, it's open source and anyone can contribute.
Solves a problem I cared about... if other people can benefit, that's great too.
That's the magic of open source ๐
In any case, you are a talented developer and I wish you much professional and recreational success, in the field
or to put it in more #the-water-cooler appropriate terms
Ideas for getting the 2 parts of a door sensor close enough together to work when placed on the fridge? Distance is 25mm and ideally it should be half that.
I adhered them to the magnets and I can move the magnets to get them closer together, but the magnets move around
Mount it on a piece of something, as you have done
That is how the proper alarm magnets do
I'm hoping for something a little more elegant than taping the magnets in place ๐

I just leveled it and then came back and saw this
๐
but the bolts are almost all the way in and the front is still too low
Adjustable feet should let you trim the rest.
Hinges first then feet trim last.
ah
or just..
how barbaric
Feet all the way in > minimum trim to balance the base if floor uneven > door hinges > feet trim
how do you do the hinges?
Ones I have do have hinge adjustment don't know if it's there in every model.
ah
happened to have my fridge and freezer inst. manuals here and i've only got front legs adjustable, nothing else
and yes, my barbaric installation does wait for leg adjustment also for the stove.. its even now thou ๐
just tilt your whole house
patient: it hurts when I do this
doctor: don't do that
But I am putting temperature sensors in all my fridges and freezers, to notice if the door is open

2 fridges and 4 freezers
Actually I have three fridges come think of it, one in the upstairs living room too
atx just trying to use as much energy as possible at this point lol
Don't worry, I'm putting the heating on in my greenhouse soon
those are possibly the two devices to monitor in any house, lets not go into atx's 20+ years old stuff, the newer does not last and breaks up..

I have a hot house to protect me from the cold outside. Inside my hot house, I have a smaller cold house to protect my food from the heat of my hot house.
<Takes some cold food out of the cold house and places it in an even smaller, hotter house.

We don't even have a frost free freezer, of course the door doesn't close ๐คฃ
Frost free means the freezer brings it's air temp up to above freezing to melt the ice
it's one degree if that. setting a freezer anymore than below 0 is generally not a good idea
?
the frost freeze aspect, which most are just by standard even if it's not listed
atleast here
Chest freezers generally wont be
Why would you not want a freezer as cold as possible?
here almost all chest freezers have the heating for frost freeze
not sure about upright freezers tho
Uprights would generally be frost free
yea normal fridge/freezer uprights I don't think have them but chest freezers is where I see it
I have a chest frrezer with it
What I want in a chest freezer is deep cold for long term storage
Which means getting food as cold as possible as quickly as possible
uh
I think mine is set to -22 degrees
food is gonna last frozen regardless.. don't need deep space cold lol
-22 celsius? ๐ฎ
Oui
That's colder than most industrial freezers. Restaurants hold food between -18 and -21.
There's a reason food storage charts often show two different time periods for "freezer" vs "deep freezer"
-18 is plenty cold enough for home stuff.
I wonder how freezers last in the outback with your temps.. you must go through them often lol
It's around 20 I'd have to check again
I have to read it with my thermometer since there's no display
I never seen a chart for a freezer.. wtf you all doing down there?
I could see something maybe for ice cream vs meat lol
But what about bacon ice cream?
thats not real bacon
when i worked at a cafe we had our freezers at -25
that blob opera thing is kind of funny. somehow makes me picture atx trying to sing
I ordered a zigbee stick from that German guy. Almost a week later, still heard nothing in terms of tracking number or shipment. Starting to get annoyed.

just spent the last several hours jailbreaking my kindle
now I can finally read PDFs without going insane
What's that like? Does it explode Kindle store functionality?
I believeit was some sort of dehumidifying technology so the water in the air doesn't freeze, but I could be wrong. All I know is that it is cold in there and we get frost on the food too. Looking forward to moving
lets you install arbitrary software
you can technically keep all kindle functionality but if you get an update it'll unjailbreak itself
can also do some stuff like replace the screensaver image
biggest selling point though is KOReader, which works very well for PDFs
at least for me
@cedar chasm ping 4 u
ah fuck i forgot it was DST tonight
Laughs in no DST state
AZ?
you have dangerous wildlife though
like that plant that if you touch it it hurts so bad you wanna off yourself
Lol I'm pretty sure the northern hemisphere has most of the deadliest plants by a long shot
And all the man eating animals
Figures, thanks :)
I don't intend to use amazon store so I just keep it in airplane mode and load everything via USB
I will need to buy some tablets for wall mounting in my new house
Fire tablets are grey market imports though
Might just be easier to buy a cheap samsung tablet
Not many rodent eating animals left either, which apparently is why Lyme disease is a big thing
depending on what exactly you need it to do
in this scenario the long support life is prob the biggest selling point
@hushed basalt https://www.pine64.org/pinetab/
In terms of tabs for wallmounting; spare a thought for the environment and pick up some used ones :) requirement is that there is a Web browser, so options should be plentiful
