I've barely touched C# and I still prefer it. Did Java through uni and it was... ๐Ÿคข

subtle pasture

Uh... usually C# is considered considerably faster than Java...

#

And because C# and Java are rather similar, there are actually automatic code converters to jump from Java to C# for the performance gains

Nice to see PowerShell make the jump to Linux, BSD, and OSX, as well

Filthy PowerShell should stay on Windows where it belongs.

What's all that nonsense about importing modules about? Why can't I just use everything that's installed?

#

Speaking of performant languages... I'm halfway through building a desktop app in JavaScript ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

Why learn a sensible desktop language when I can use Electron?

And... the crappy beta version is done. Tray app that handles volume control via MQTT, since IoTLink shits the bed when you try to use its audio module.

Same way Python works, and nobody complains about python imports

Truth hurts. People already use Python everywhere because Bash shell scripts suck so hard, why not PowerShell?

@hearty depot not a fair comparison

That command actually INSTALLS the entire NFS client

#

It's in the component store, so it comes with windows

So it's physically on your hard disk, but it's not enabled by default

Hence "Windows optional feature"

midnight adder

that's even worse

subtle pasture
#

Not really

why disable a feature by default?

subtle pasture

No need to have the ports open or the service running if you're not using NFS

well, thats how I have to use powershell
how to do this in bash

so i have file and fiLe, how does standard config handle this?

hearty depot
#

the powershell sript i pasted above, will this persist on reboots?

subtle pasture
#

No, they're missing the persist flag. One tweak would make it persist

#

Also, when running on Linux, the solution they used in Bash also works in PowerShell

#

So there's literally no difference...

hearty depot
#

reminds me, I have to build a windows server cloud image -_-
I'm honest here - windows just feels hard for me

midnight adder
#

at the end of the day, thry both achieve the same thing and it's dealers choice

subtle pasture
#

Except not... PowerShell is actually a real time C# interpretor. It can import full .net objects and work with them

Bash... Doesn't extend that far

You want to do that with Bash, you're calling another language inside your script to get the job done

Can an m.2 connector be built to support both SATA and PCIe, depending on whatever is plugged in?

clear magnet
#

im confused by your question. why would u have a m2 connector setup for sata?

molten osprey
#

why not? m.2 can do PCIe, SATA or USB

#

lots of m.2 sata drives around

#

NVMe drives are faster because they use PCIe

clear magnet
#

hmm guess i cant help i thought only m2 ports could only accept m2 devices

molten osprey
#

well, thats true ๐Ÿ™‚

#

but there are different sorts of m2 devices ๐Ÿ™‚

clear magnet
#

are u talking about a m2 to sata adapter?

molten osprey
#

no

#
M.2

M.2, formerly known as the Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF), is a specification for internally mounted computer expansion cards and associated connectors. M.2 replaces the mSATA standard, which uses the PCI Express Mini Card physical card layout and connectors. Employing a more flexible physical specification, the M.2 allows different module...

clear magnet
#

sata to m2?

molten osprey
#

"Buses exposed through the M.2 connector are PCI Express 3.0 & newer, Serial ATA (SATA) 3.0 and USB 3.0"

#

m.2 is not a protocol

#

it's a connector type

clear magnet
#

thats why im asking if u need a adapter

molten osprey
#

no i'm looking at a cheap case claiming to do both SATA and PCIe

#

and i didnt know thats possible

clear magnet
#

link pls

molten osprey
#

closed the window

#

but the product wont solve the question

#

๐Ÿ™‚

#

it was on aliexpress. they'll say anything.

#

just not sure if it's possible

#

and i dont know enough about the m.2 connector to know if it would be possible.

clear magnet
#

yeah i wanted to see what u were talkin about

#

well like u said its just a connector im sure there are adapter for everything

#

what is the problem ur trying to solve

molten osprey
#

"is it possible for an m.2 socket to accept either PCIe devices or SATA devices, or must the manufacturer make a choice between the two when soldering the socket?"

#

i guess that means it can support both protocols, but not both at the same time ... the device plugged in will select it?

clear magnet
#

yeah seems that way but i cant find any sata to m2 adapter or pcie to m2

molten osprey
#

you don't need those

#

m.2 supports both of those

clear magnet
#

how would you connect it then?

molten osprey
#

you can buy an m.2 ssd that speaks sata (WD Green, Blue) or an m.2 ssd that speaks pcie (WD Black)

clear magnet
#

lets say u had a sata u wanted in your m2 port. what would u use to connect them

#

yeah m2 to sata and m2 to pcie

molten osprey
#

you're talking about SATA the connector, i'm talking about SATA the protocol ๐Ÿ™‚

clear magnet
#

the adapter would translate is if needed

#

well to answer u question yes u can adapt a m2 to other protocols such as usb, sata, pcie, blah blah

#

but not the other way around which is what i though u wanted

molten osprey
#

no need to adapt

#

m.2 suppots usb, sata, pcie out of the box

#

the protocols, that is

#

supports*

clear magnet
#

well good luck trying to put a sata cable on a m2 drive

molten osprey
#

you're still confusing connectors and protocols

#

an m.2 drive has an m.2 CONNECTOR, and uses it to either speak PCIe or SATA to the host

#

there is no need for an adapter

#

i was as confused as you 24 hours ago ๐Ÿ™‚

#

from Wikipedia: "The M.2 specification provides up to four PCI Express lanes and one logical SATA 3.0 (6 Gbit/s) port, and exposes them through the same connector so both PCI Express and SATA storage devices may exist in the form of M.2 modules."

clear magnet
#

quick google search i got this

#

"If youโ€™re planning on going with an M.2 drive while building or upgrading your gaming PC, itโ€™s important to note whether youโ€™re getting a SATA-based drive or an NVMe-based drive. Your motherboard might not have the appropriate M.2 slots for both types (SATA and NVMe M.2 drives are often keyed slightly differently), and even if it does, you donโ€™t want to waste money on a pricier NVMe drive if the motherboard youโ€™ve chosen can only access data using the SATA protocol (not every motherboard allows for PCIe data transfers)."

molten osprey
#

m.2 SATA drives exist but have little benefit over a 2.5-inch form factor

clear magnet
#

the manufacutre will pin it out to tell the mobo the correct protocol to use

#

agreed

#

im all nvme here

molten osprey
#

little benefit except being slightly cheaper

#

i have no use for NVMe, all my hardware is too old to support the speeds

#

I don't go beyond USB 3.0 / SATA-3

clear magnet
#

ur hardware too slow but u have a m2 port?

molten osprey
#

i dont have an m.2 port ... i'm looking at being an SSD enclosure. an m.2 enclosure that supports NVMe over PCIe is 50% more than one that supports SATA.

#

the enclosure then translates either pcie or sata to USB

#

it's a small price difference, and the SSD sticks themselves are also quite similar in price. so there is no real reason not to get anything other than NVMe.

#

my question was simply for learning .... as i didnt know m.2 can support both protocols

#

the wikipedia page about m.2 is informative

clear magnet
#

Well ssd size value is still better than nvme. If you arenโ€™t going to take advantage of the faster speeds then nvme seem uneccesary

molten osprey
#

not if you get sticks in the m.2 form factor, they're the same price

clear magnet
#

Itโ€™s support being backwards compatible. In case you have a m2 drive and no m2 port

molten osprey
#

true

#

i've seen the adapters

#

i like the m.2 2280 sticks because they fit right next to a Raspberry Pi 4 in a 3.5-inch drive bay

clear magnet
#

Yeah if ur down in the sub 2tb range ur right

molten osprey
#

hehe

#

i'm annoying the smallest SSD i can buy is 256GB

#

i would get 32 if they had them

clear magnet
#

Just buy a sd card and a sd card reader

molten osprey
#

it's a Pi running Home Assistant

clear magnet
#

Got yourself a tiny ssd

molten osprey
#

I've had too many SD cards die on me

clear magnet
#

Why not just upgrade ur pi sd to 512 then

molten osprey
#

i cant find small SSD's! everything available for me is 256 and up

#

i could do that, but whats the point when you use less than 16GB ๐Ÿ™‚

clear magnet
#

Get a Evo sd

#

So confused ur say ur trying to put m2 then ur saying you donโ€™t need more than 16gb.

molten osprey
#

oh a 512GB SD card ... sorry i misread that

#

hehe

#

i dont need more than 16gb, but i wont use SD cards because they keep dying on me

#

so ... SSD it is

clear magnet
#

Good luck

molten osprey
#

i've got SSD running on other Pi's

#

but getting a new one now and figuring out the storage for it

#

i actually had a Pi running DISKLESS yesterday

#

but Docker doesnt run over NFS

#

or rather OverlayFS doesnt run over NFS

subtle pasture
subtle pasture
#

Only because NVMe drives are limited on PCB space above 2tb, though qlc drives are close

#

Also, if you're taking about 4 and 8TB drives, even SATA disks are prohibitively expensive...

clear magnet
#

yes but thats subjective

subtle pasture
#

Actually, I just looked... Even 4TB NVMe drives are within $20 of their SATA counterparts

#

8TB is where the price parity breaks...

#

So yeah, I stand by my point. Unless you're, specifically, buying an 8TB drive, NVMe drives have been at price parity with SATA drives for a long time now.

clear magnet
#

what ever make u feel better about urself

subtle pasture
#

It's just the truth? You can go search Amazon and see ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

#

Prices are similar all the way up the stack, until 8TB

#

And that's a good thing, IMHO. SATA is kinda a massive dead-end standard...

clear ferry

subtle pasture

Both of them have caps, and charge per-gigabyte after you exceed your monthly allotment

cedar chasm

We have that for cellular based services

subtle pasture

Yeah, we had 6 months of caps in 98 on fixed broadband, wasn't very popular

Consumers have basically capless mobile subscriptions, my wife usually has 60GB with all the rollovers

subtle pasture

I could pay an extra fee to Comcast to remove the cap...

cedar chasm

Well, if you pay for it you get something approaching unlimited LTE, but beware of fineprint

subtle pasture

But I don't blow it often enough for that to pan out financially

It's kinda like an older form of Limewire/Napster but it's not P2P. People upload 'articles' to a message board, you search for them and download them. Only articles don't have to be text, they can be binaries.

midnight adder
#

well you can also get malware

#

malware from 1999

subtle pasture
deft pewter
#

You can get malware anywhere. I haven't come across any on Usenet ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

#

Yup. I find it way more convenient to have all my media in one place on my PC. Hate switching apps and searching for stuff.

subtle pasture
#

I want all my content in one place. The media industry failed at that, and hard, when they started pulling programming off of netflix

midnight adder
cedar chasm
deft pewter
#

Most of the media I have is probably available on the services we pay for. They're just so annoying to use.

subtle pasture
#

Like, sure, launch your own streaming platform, but DON'T pull your content off of other streaming services if you don't want it pirated

deft pewter
cedar chasm
#

Ah, I see

#

How have they not been a prime target for the DMCA brigade?

deft pewter
#

It's a little complicated because there's multiple pieces to it. You'll want to subscribe to an indexer (the 'search engine') and access to download from somewhere too. Maybe $100/year if done cheaply.

#

Oh, DMCA do go after them. It's just not very effective ๐Ÿ˜„

midnight adder
#

i wonder if they make or loose money from having a fleet of lawyers DCMA everything always

cedar chasm
#

So it's a shell game of sorts, where an attack has as of yet been unsuccessful

deft pewter
#

Between Usenet and torrents, there's very little you can't find. Usenet gets weird though... some people sub to multiple services in case one service doesn't have the articles they want.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, usenet requires you pay for access to a Usenet Service Provider, and then you'll often also need to pay for access to news servers

deft pewter
#

I almost gave up when looking into Usenet and I'm pretty tech savvy. It's not intuitive at all... but once set up, it's amazing.

subtle pasture
#

However, the annual fee for all of the above is cheaper than a year of Spotify, so...

midnight adder
#

i wonder if anyone went 'damn, my service of choice got taken down, guess i'll sign up for hbo max'

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter Supernews + NZBGeek + NZBGet is a good start... and tie it into Sonarr / Radarr

#

The real issue with Usenet is retention. Stuff gets re-uploaded constantly because articles that are over a year old start to die

clear ferry
#

I should get an invite to nzbplanet somehow

subtle pasture
#

It's nice being able to pop open Plex and have a list of "recently added" content that's nothing but my favorite movies/shows, with all of the commercials removed

Earlier this week our gov tried something silly here which some of the courts didn't enjoy likewise: shopping on appointment. The idea was to have only 1 person in a shop at the same time for say 30 minutes.
It's silly because while everything was kept shut except grocery, the figures went up. They now decided this is unfair practice and in some states it's now business as usual (with some rules of course)

I'm still wondering who profits most from this crisis....

The helmets amplify frequency bands that coincide with those allocated to the US government between 1.2 Ghz and 1.4 Ghz. According to the FCC, These bands are supposedly reserved for ''radio location'' (ie, GPS), and other communications with satellites (see, for example, [3]). The 2.6 Ghz band coincides with mobile phone technology. Though not affiliated by government, these bands are at the hands of multinational corporations.

i mean, it's a big metal bucket on your head

#

is nuc fixed ram?

deft pewter

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Probably depends on the NUC you buy.

#

If you want something you can upgrade, build a real PC.

midnight adder
#

hmm

#

i do have a spare PC case

#

such effort

deft pewter
#

If this is just for HA and other miscellaneous apps, an NUC is plenty. If you want to do video encoding or incorporate a NAS, build a real machine.

#

I'm happy with my NUC for low-power stuff. It's tiny and consumes almost no power.

midnight adder
#

i want it for a dhcp server, adguard, and HA

deft pewter
#

Then an NUC is fine and you don't care about having tons of RAM.

deft pewter

That's with Hyperion running at all times (it's currently transcoding) and about 8 Docker containers (including HA and AdGuard Home).

midnight adder

seems resonable

deft pewter
#

Yeah. No need for a fancier processor if you're not running something like Plex off it.

midnight adder
#

no

deft pewter
#

If I ever build a NAS, that'll become my media server too.

#

Shift some of the crap off my main PC so it becomes gaming/dev machine instead of a hodge podge of everything.

midnight adder

and even if i was running plex. it\d not be transcoding it'd be direct stream

deft pewter

You hope. Some people have trouble with device profiles.

#

But yeah, if all goes to plan, direct stream will be fine.

midnight adder
#

plex is odd

deft pewter

Are you happy with Electron, then? Was there much of a learning curb?

I work with NodeJS already, so the only bits to learn are the Electron-specific API's. It's got some weird patterns in place to safely call Node stuff from the front-end and to interact between front- and back-end components.

#

I'll share this on GitHub when I get a bit further and you can take a look. Trying to make it something that anyone can install and enter their own config.

If I can sort out suitable GitHub Actions, I can even get it to build releases so you can just grab an executable.

Yea but ha blu is almost consumer friendly enough to just like buy and ship to a non techie end user

deft pewter

Sure... and if they're non-techie, you'll get endless calls from them asking why it's dropping off the network.

Most consumer hubs need an ethernet connection because that's just sensible for an kind of always-on server.

And even 'non-techie' people need to know a certain amount if they're expecting to automate their homes. There's no plug-and-play solution out there that doesn't take some fiddling.

There's a reason that traditionally you've had to pay thousands for someone to install for you if you can't do it yourself. It ain't easy.

Well Iโ€™m dumb cuz a blu wouldnโ€™t work for what I need to do anyway. I need to get modbus communication into it.

#

So a hat and a custom case and some additional preprogramming

#

My employer is having a hard time rolling an monitoring app out for their home battery, Iโ€™m trying to get them to embrace HA as the solution instead.

#

They have seen success in moving tech support over to discord so maybe this will happen too

deft pewter
#

Sounds like cutting corners to me. Businesses should probably be using something more stable than HA and Discord ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

HA is great but it's definitely more of an enthusiast thing.

static plinth
#

We still do phone and email support but Discord letโ€™s us also support customers with non urgent questions, in a team environment where everyone can get up to speed on the question/issue

#

Sometimes that isnโ€™t what is best, so we kick it to a phone or email at that point

#

HA is more of a stretch

#

But customers want to monitor our product and we donโ€™t have a great solution

deft pewter
#

Discord for non-urgent? As a customer, I'd expect to get a far quicker answer via chat than via any other channel.

#

Email is non-urgent.

static plinth
#

Generally the urgent customers are old school

deft pewter
#

Or just old ๐Ÿ˜„

static plinth
#

Yea sometimes unschooled

#

Problem with making our own app is that support issue as well

#

So Iโ€™d prefer the app to not be part of the company to reduce the support

deft pewter
#

That's a... strange view. You'll just tell customers that it's not your problem?

#

That'll go down well.

static plinth
#

Yea thatโ€™s the concern

#

Not tell them itโ€™s not our problem

#

But that itโ€™s not our software so if they want to configure it to their home and play with it, itโ€™s their responsibility

static plinth
#

We make batteries that go with solar, and there is an industry problem of too many monitoring systems. So this is a path where we donโ€™t need to be directly responsible for supporting our own app, and pushes the customers down a road that has features they want, like comprehensive home monitoring and potential for energy automation.

Sounds to me like they should use Blu and we need to develop a compatible WiFi feather dodad.

deft pewter
#

Just create one standard to rule them all

static plinth
#

Thatโ€™s definitely an issue we deal with, to get our battery to talk to various manufacturers inverters directly

#

Like itโ€™s all mod bus or canvas but the registries are scrambled, so they use a matrix to decode it. Fun stuff

deft pewter
#

I'll work out the GitHub Actions stuff soon. There's no release for you to download but you can have a nosey through the code.

In any case, you are a talented developer and I wish you much professional and recreational success, in the field

Ideas for getting the 2 parts of a door sensor close enough together to work when placed on the fridge? Distance is 25mm and ideally it should be half that.

#

I adhered them to the magnets and I can move the magnets to get them closer together, but the magnets move around

last cedar
#

Mount it on a piece of something, as you have done

short lion
#

yeah

#

they shift when the door shuts

last cedar
#

That is how the proper alarm magnets do

short lion
#

I'm hoping for something a little more elegant than taping the magnets in place ๐Ÿ˜‚

short lion
#

just a stronger magnet?

last cedar
#

You see the bracket under the upper component (magnet)

#

Thin aluminium thing

short lion
#

yeah

last cedar
#

Similar to that

#

Aluminium is important because it isn't magnetic

#

You can disturb the magnets with magnets ๐Ÿคฃ

#

Or other non ferous metal

clear ferry

Olala so fancy

With your big words

but then how do I attach the bracket to the fridge?

clear ferry

Double sided adhesive

I'll have to hire someone for that

I didn't do hinges

Hinges first then feet trim last.

how barbaric

tidal bronze

Feet all the way in > minimum trim to balance the base if floor uneven > door hinges > feet trim

how do you do the hinges?

Ones I have do have hinge adjustment don't know if it's there in every model.

Frost free freezers are terrible for food

#

My chest freezer is frost free free

clear ferry
#

Frost free would imply I installed the door correctly

#

Can't have any of that

hushed basalt
#

Frost free means the freezer brings it's air temp up to above freezing to melt the ice

forest edge
hushed basalt

?

the frost freeze aspect, which most are just by standard even if it's not listed

#

Why would you not want a freezer as cold as possible?

forest edge
#

here almost all chest freezers have the heating for frost freeze

#

not sure about upright freezers tho

hushed basalt
#

Uprights would generally be frost free

forest edge
#

yea normal fridge/freezer uprights I don't think have them but chest freezers is where I see it

#

I have a chest frrezer with it

hushed basalt
#

What I want in a chest freezer is deep cold for long term storage

#

Which means getting food as cold as possible as quickly as possible

forest edge
#

uh

hushed basalt
#

I think mine is set to -22 degrees

forest edge
#

food is gonna last frozen regardless.. don't need deep space cold lol

deft pewter
#

-22 celsius? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

hushed basalt
#

Oui

deft pewter
#

That's colder than most industrial freezers. Restaurants hold food between -18 and -21.

hushed basalt
#

There's a reason food storage charts often show two different time periods for "freezer" vs "deep freezer"

deft pewter
#

-18 is plenty cold enough for home stuff.

forest edge
#

I wonder how freezers last in the outback with your temps.. you must go through them often lol

hushed basalt
#

It's around 20 I'd have to check again

#

I have to read it with my thermometer since there's no display

forest edge

I never seen a chart for a freezer.. wtf you all doing down there?

I could see something maybe for ice cream vs meat lol

In terms of tabs for wallmounting; spare a thought for the environment and pick up some used ones :) requirement is that there is a Web browser, so options should be plentiful
