They can be back online in minutes, even if their on-prem offices burn to the ground
i completley see thepoint of on-prem. i also completley see point of cloud, am stuck in a morass of "but you can do both with this easy to sue addon" (aka shitfest that is NOT easy, nor USEFUL)
I think I've had.... Close to two dozen different customers try to implement storage spaces the last 8 years, in all shapes and sizes, noone is still running it
Hybrid cloud is the future
@clear ferry So...why aren't they running it?
storage-spaces = crapware, = promises by marketing/sales, doesnt ACTUALLY do what people actaully need
I've had zero issues with Storage Spaces deployments... what are y'all running into, exactly?
And Microsoft refuses to actually tell customers their setup is supported, which is great
Customers just want a solution that works and gives them five nines or more, and the vendor takes responsibility
Right... I dunno how you get any more "just works" than Storage Spaces Direct...
You slide in a new blade server, the storage auto-pools, done...
It might work like that now, it did not in the past
It's probably the simplest network raid/pooling system I've ever used
And customers won't touch something that burned them before
So you have a full PFC enabled network stack between all nodes? With rdma running?
Cross site even
Haven't had to make a single cluster span multiple sites, but yes the first two
can't trust m$ anymore after the shit i've seen with hyper-v 😄
mem leaks on the management service
@unkempt sage posted a code wall, it is moved here --> https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/tMxJgfrFfz/
I mean, that's every hypervisor at some point... ESX / ESXi, Openstack, Hyper-V, KVM...
They've literally all had to have memory leaks patched... or worse...
ESXi / vCenter just had a nasty root exploit
yeah but never had those issues with vmware...ever
So I guess you can't trust anyone. lol
dammit, it wasnt a code wall, it was a well (ish) reasoned argument against CTO level mgmt
Direct? Uh... you've never heard of a lateral attack?
SalesBro opens an attachment, boom, root shell into vCenter
You should patch regardless...
whoever connects his mgmt directly to the campus network deserves to get fired asap
That would be 99% of SMB clients
And they refuse to pay to fix it
Ask me how I know...
i always tell to decrease the attack vectors instead of smearing AV all over the devices for example
Yeah, same, they won't pay for the massive project required to set up VLANs, routing, and ACLs
yup...sadly
And for SMB clients, it often requires new hardware
better pay some random snake oil vendor
Regardless... nobody is perfect. Root exploits and memory leaks everywhere...
vCenter 7 will still bend over and eat its own ass eventually if you don't reconfigure it. The default settings ensure that logging fills up its root partition and causes the whole thing to crash (eventually)
That's been a problem since the beginning of time
that's true...shit gets nastier every day. things we never thought would be possible are now turning into CVEs on a daily basis
Oh, and don't forget all the people running virtualized firewall/routers...
They have an ESXi host connected directly to WAN...
That's fun to secure
that's why there are people who actually learn and practice to set up such systems.... but the random dude with nice vocabulary and trustworthy appearance might not know the whole truth but gets the contract anyways
it's always fun and games until a crypto trojan enters the realm 😄
Actually... my previous employer used virtualized Untangle as their firewall and router... shit, they're probably 100% open to that root exploit
Assuming they're still running VMWare's stack. I haven't worked there in like 6 years
yeah like i said...never put core infra on the edge....hypervisors should never, ever run on networks that might be exploited easily
Yeah, there's a reason I went and bought physical hardware to run pfSense, even though everyone and their mom told me to virtualize it...
and stuff gets interesting now with virtualized fabrics
Though one of the biggest reasons to make it physical was so that my entire virtualized infra could shit the bed, and internet would stay up
now, imagine, some numpty says he could save money by virtualizing not only the core network but also the SAN not thinking about the hypervisor that runs the stuff which is sitting pants down on the wan
I've seen it, yeah
yeah same reason i bought myself a mikrotik and ut the (expensive) server into the lab at work
Ha runs on a rpi now....went down from 120w to say 10-15w
and i do love a proper swearing session with iptables 😄
when even the cat leaves the room because it's getting too loud you know shit's not working as expected 😄
i wonder what crazy stuff i'll see as soon as i receive some contracts but right now it's certification time.... have to do ccna, dell associate and prof. in order to receive "the good stuff"
things no previous employer was willing to pay... now this one requires it and pays it. what should i say...
What's annoying is my servers, the ones I built, are dead silent
It's the damn Synology NAS that's loud AF
Synology RS2414RP+
2U, 12 bay, dual PSU
uh oh..i know that thing
It doesn't have the CPU fault, don't worry
Yeah, it's a tank that'll run forever, pretty much
but effing slow on the rebuild
That's mostly due to the default memory configuration...
Adding a second stick of RAM makes a huge difference to rebuild times
yeah but the backplane is quite slow... i had the 8gig versions i guess... 2 of them as a HA cluster
A big reason for that is because Synology DSM automatically enables memory compression if you have a nas with less than 4GB of RAM installed, and memory compression steals a ton of CPU cycles. Add RAM, get CPU performance. lol
nah. bs...4gig
I haven't really had to push the backplane, mostly because the NAS is limited to 4x 1gbps NICs
The most load it sees is when NFS 4 (multipathed) hits it across multiple links
i never reached more than 300mb/s when rebuilding...dunno why and since it was used as an archive it never was an issue if it took days to sync its disks. second copy was always available, being an HA
Also, Synology needs to hurry up and release some USB 3.0 NICs for their NAS's...
QNAP already did it
well - network sync is another thing... i wish those devices had 10g links
You can slap a 5gbps NIC on any QNAP NAS because they have an official USB 3.0 NIC
And people have already custom-compiled NIC drivers for Synology DSM and proven that USB NICs work fine... including the QNAP NIC
But Synology seems to have no interest in it
but...you know...synology is not targeted at data center-esque applications anyways
Tell that to their high-end full-SSD shelf units...
no game for purestorage...sorry
I've seen these deployed for Dynamics AX SQL server cluster storage: https://www.synology.com/en-us/products/FS6400
Centralize data storage and backup, streamline file collaboration, optimize video management, and secure network deployment to facilitate data management.
Screaming fast 🤷♀️
Also one of the few physical SQL clusters we've had to set up
Microsoft Dynamics AX is a beast
It's a crime it doesn't come standard with 40gbps NICs, because it can absolutely max them out once installed
that's a shame indeed
At least it has two PCIe slots for additional NICs 😛
maybe i'll take a deep dive into netapp and pure some day... i know those things are behemoths
but 6-figure flavored
would like to see a switch glowing red trying to keep up with the data flow
that'll be a display to remember
anyways...need a nap now... brain requires immediate maintenance downtime 😄
Unrelated: Time for new keycaps...
They make these by taking clear plastic keyscaps, dipping them in black paint, then laser-etching the legends (burns away the paint)
Apparently my fingernails are rough on the edges of the keycaps...
I wonder if anyone makes true double-shot keycaps for LED-backlit boards 🤔
Thx for clues and other help with my MQTT broker issue, most especially to cogneato, who walked me through the correct configuration, as opposed to the mess I'd made with advice from random Google searches. I have my devices back! 🙂
Get black keycaps and laser etch the letters out completely
Then sell for profit
That would probably get gross fast...
Also, you can't actually do that for a lot of letters
That's not the attitude that put us on the moon
Anything with a closed loop would be illegible
I just don't think your values align with LaserEtchedBlackKeyCapsPtyLtd
I'm afraid I'm going to have to let you go
You're right, my values don't align with an impossible product 😄
Good luck selling nothing
Please return company property to HR on your way out
Lol, company property...
At my current workplace, I've purchased so much of my own equipment, I'd have to ask the company to return my property
Also you agreed to a non compete by starting this conversation so you won't be able to work anywhere in the Solar region for 46 years
Bought my own keyboard and mouse because the only ones they'd provide were total dogshit
Non-competes like that don't actually hold up in court, at least not in my state 😄
I need a keyboard
I was thinking moonlander
Although carrying a $500 keyboard in my backpack might be a bit dicey
morning
morning
somebody throw me a shovel. need to find out my car in the snow
We had bare roads yesterday
uh...bare naked
untill driving...i hope to find the car :)))
Facebook just let me know that eight years ago today I stipulated the following
If a task requiring the time
tto complete shall be completedNtimes, but can be automated such that it requires the timet'to complete it's worth spending the timeT=f*N*(t-t')to do so, wherefin (number > 0) is your Nerd Factor.
Thomas general theorem of automation.
Not valid for very largeN,t'which does not require monitoring or presence, or in proximity to deadlines/finals week when the behavior ofTgrows chaotic.
something funky happened to my gnome desktop after a recent 21.04 update of ubuntu, clicking on windows don't change the focus as intended, and sometimes it select the window behind 😄
interesting bug
apparently alt+tab has stopped working as intended also, and just switches between the two latest windows
so...don't dare to update again :))
how can a page/domain load successfully (cert is valid, https:443) but have a ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID on websocket connections?? how??
Some strange SAN issue @dusky plank ?
nice read for ESP8266 users and pin out at boot
https://rabbithole.wwwdotorg.org/2017/03/28/esp8266-gpio.html
ok, the ws connection got interrupted by a proxy based on sni redirects which was not configured to proxy that domain - so they ended up on a different server... holy moly that is some debugging hell
that blog liked to used the term "shoot yourself in the foot" which I think is a bit extreme
Know what i love? How iPhones connected to a computer via USB won't take charge all night if you don't unlock it and say that you "trust" this device. That's a great design decision.
it's a security feature, not so worth it for every day use but can help you get your data protected in case of loss
Yes, but the USB connecton has two distinct uses. Why can't it charge without allowing data to be sent and received?
That actually has to opposite effect, because you have to trust a potentially unsafe computer even if all you need is to top up your battery.
it says "i" so again not surprised
no because assuming you lost your device a foreigner has only limited tries to guess your phone code (beneath those time paddings after failed tries)....
say he could charge it - it's theoretically unlinimited. If the connection is unsafe it's not advised to charge there at all, as stated by the quesion "do you want to trust this device?"
But charging with a charger is no problem
I miss the old micro USB standard where you could have a charge only cable
When did apple ever make good choices ?
Didn't they fire Steve Jobs once?
I’m trying to find a way of connecting my home heating to HA, but everything seems to need an account on somebody else’s server. Does anybody have any recommendations on kit that doesn’t want to know everything about me?
OK Thanks. I’ll try there.
How many pukes i get by mentioning..... Jenkins
much love for windows handling tooltips ❤️ (this one comes from vstudio which is long gone in background, still shining bright upgront)
must love the escaping (ffs...)
hey guys - cant find the real channel to ask tbh - its not a fully related ha topic - but it fits 😄
--> what secure (and maybe fast) public dns you can recommended? 🙂
Where do I ask about the "This issue has been automatically marked as stale because it has not had recent activity. It will be closed if no further activity occurs. Thank you for your contributions" Why would the issue be closed if it was never fixed?
Without knowing the issue its hard to comment, not all requests can ever be fulfilled
you are more than 1.600km north of me , what do you expect? we have snow the whole next week...
its also stale since it does not gather much or any interest from any others
To expand upon that a little... it got no more interest from other people claiming to have the issue (suggesting it's not a big deal) and no interest from any develop willing to spend time investigating and fixing it. Better to close issues like that down rather than have thousands of stale issues open - makes for easier management.
Reminds me
I need to find time to get around to my GitHub issues
Maybe next week
Close all my issues @deft pewter
git gud --scrub
Well, I've done my one good deed for 2021
Helped an old man get into his car when his fob was dead
Just smashed the window for him right ?
Ha Ha, my car was made last century 🙂
Not sure when they started hiding them, my 2001 A8 had it visible, the 2007 A3 did not
So somewhere between those
I definitely haven't stood around for 10 minutes messing with my dead key fob before realising it also has a pop-out key. Nope. Not me.
Your car has a key?
lets not paste any pics for a while, ok? My internet is struggling...
What is this, internet from the 80s
Almost latest mobile technology!
I should print you some faster internet
Or maybe its your superwidescreen 16k printer stream that is eating the capacity
I was initially thinking damn that's an awesome ping... then I realised it's not ping 😄
to expand upon that a little... it got no more interest from other people claiming to have the issue (suggesting it's not a big deal) and no interest from any develop willing to spend time investigating and fixing it. Many users are having issues, i.e booting from usb with SSD on OS above 5.4. Closing it does not solve anything. The current work around is not update the OS. Suggesting this is not a big deal is not true. It is for a lot of people
Then people need to add supporting information to keep it alive...
Stale means it hasn't been touched in a long time
What supporting info is needed?

I don't run HAOS, but that's how tickets work - if they're abandoned they get closed
And people need to provide them for the current version
So you are saying to update each time and post the logs to the original issue?
Well, something needs to be done to keep it alive. Showing it still impacts the current version is a useful something.
I will continue to do this. My issue again is when the pi freezes there has not been any useful information in the logs. Stefan has commented on mine as well as many others. Not sure what to try next.
I have tried the recommend split system sd to boot and SSD for everything else and this exhibits the same "freeze issue".
Well, .... #330990055533576204 is where to discuss that further 😉
We're getting well into support territory here.
General PI-comment, my experience is that freezes are related to there not being enough power
I have
proper psu or gtfo-situation
They are not a Power issue.
That's good then
I wish it was as this is an easy (and cheap) fix
Well, learned something today... Dyn was bought by Oracle, and the dynamic DNS services are being killed
So glad I stopped using them years ago
Oh, haven't they killed everything they've ever purchased?
Pretty much
Top-row pooches haven't had a day of adversity in their lives, bottom-left is a hungry fighter and bottom-right has the discipline.
What do you use now? I use route 53.
Also Route53
Route53 and that script you recommended are awesome. Makes spinning up a new service on my home server a doddle.
All the benefits of dynamic DNS, none of the bullshit that comes with the 'free' providers.
nice acronym
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/PICNIC#English
You're a PICNIC.
script you recommended ? tell me more
It creates a Lambda function on your AWS account that handles DDNS formatted requests and updates your DNS records in Route53. Then you set up ddclient on your server to point at that Lambda.
You can tweak the polling frequency and stuff but basically it'll watch for your external IP changing (or new subdomains being added to the config) and sort your records for you.
still using cloudflare for my dns, the API is mostly awesome, but it pisses me off that I cant limit tokens to subdomains. Maybe worth brining the reccords back to amazon after I dont use most of the cloudflare services anymore
but the workers are quite fun
They're like Lambdas, right? Lightweight functions that run in the cloud?
yep "serverless"
Pricing changed so you can now use the database for free too.
only built simple text prompts and autorisation untill now
I'm getting so annoyed at work lately. They refuse to put in the time to break our monolith up into true serverless apps and complain when things take ages to develop... 🤦♂️
Does ayone know if Flux Dashboards / cells can be shared/exported and embedded in HA?
Or if they can be accessed via panel iframe?
Thats sound complicated. I have a script that runs internally that finds your current external IP and does a dns lookup on the domain. If the two dont match it updates route 53 with the new ip it just got.
Sure, there are probably more efficient ways to build it... but I didn't have to build anything 😄
You're not wrong... I'm going to start applying more pressure and see if they listen. If not, it'll be another reason to move.
Yeah, I switched to Cloudflare for dynamic DNS ages ago
You sell yourself for 8 hours a day. Don't take less than you are worth, either finacially, or when it comes to your health. If they are frustrating you, try and get out.
Yeah, the 8 hours a day is a big deal. They're moving offices and my commute's longer when we go back...
I'm not 'working' for 10 hours a day if they're only going to pay me for 8 of them.
Oooof, yeah, not great
Yeah exactly
Evaluate all your options and do what is best for you
We are all disposable.
(to them)
I'm actually a little surprised by their reaction. I'm one of their better developers and I told them I'd rather leave than commute. They didn't try to stop me...
They're so stubborn about going into offices.
My last 2 jobs have been hell.
Sounds like it will be their loss. Make sure to ask for at least 10% more wage at future interviews btw :)
I'm even madder today. I just heard they're considering hiring a remote worker to fill a long-standing vacancy...
Yet they won't let me go remote. FML
"hey, that thing we've had you working on designing conceptually for two weeks now, we've decided that we need to hack a solution in ASAP"
@deft pewter "I'd like to apply for that remote job"
It's for a QA, else I'd be tempted
assure that quality, homie
Lol y'all and your sucky management
Yeah, just state your interest as that hints the value of remote work for you enough you're ready to apply for a position change
People don't quit jobs, they quit management
🤣
i would hate to work for myself as i would hate my boss.. 😄
The reason I quit working in state was definitely management
Right now I'm chums with all managers 4 levels above me, that might be why I'm comfortable
Have I become the Harvard cunt, without actually going to Harvard

Hmm... minus the Harvard bit? Yep, you're a cunt.
Raccoons been stealing your cabling again.
damn rare earth metals and it's value
Happily since I got FTTP I haven't had to worry about upload or download speeds
i'm on the preorder list for starlink so hopefully
such trees falling on phone lines won't trouble my dsl for much longer
My DSL sucked, it was 4 Mb/s down in theory, and less in reality - 2 Mb/s on a bad day
Going to "80" Mb/s FTTC got me speeds of around 40-45 Mb/s
technically it's vdsl but i have 2.6kM of copper
No, it didn't break per se, it just got slow, down to 0.3 Mbps today
Starlink only next year but on the queue as well thought i really hope things improve before that
i'm due mid to end 2021
I had fibre/cable "coming in the next quarter" for about three or four years
i've got 'no plans to bring fiber to your area'
I need to check now and see when we got the notification about them cabling up our street for cable broadband/TV...
i got a quote to run it and it was eye watering and a 4 year contract
There we go, late 2017 we got the notification they'd be with us within 6 months
was something like £6000 survey, consultation fee
then install £4000 install, then £400/month for four years minimum
Yeah, a colleague has a pole on the FTTP rollout just outside their house, but getting FTTP to it has been delayed and delayed and delayed.... they'd get it if they paid for the thing, but like you, the costs are "not cheap"
I think i'll just buy bunch of harddrives and drive to the office and download the latest internet with the company's fast connection and drive back home to enjoy latest news and shit
they don't have to dig up the roads. just shoot it threw the existing conduit
how hard can it be?
grins
pulls out the pliers
We're talking Openreach.... the lot who couldn't activate broadband on my line because the duct was blocked
Funny, I was using that copper pair to talk to them on the phone...
to be fair i'm looking forward to not giving openreach any more money
Four months of constant back and fore before we got a date agreed, and then finally activated
how many mb you up too?
actual or predicted?
Predicted. Actual is that or a tiny bit higher usually
interesting
FTTP gives you what you're supposed to get, not the crap you get with DSL or FTTC
lot less to go wrong with glass
Yeah, my biggest problems are usually the OpenReach bit - between me and my ISP handoff
i have been having microstutters for years, as in disconnections that last less than a second, i've given up
been on now for three years
Yeah, I got a few seconds of disconnect, and BT eventually admitted they wouldn't investigate because it was below their threshold
Switched ISP, put them on the case, problem sorted within 2 weeks
i had them run a new line between my property and the junction box outside
fixed 50% of it
Mine turned out to be exchange side - either the port or the card, not sure which
AA ISP gave them a kick up the rear
Yeah, AA are one of the good ones
to give the DSL it's fair credit, for a twisted pair of unshielded cables it does remarkably well
we have an exceptional RF rich enviornment
especially in the frequency they operate in
At least with the supposed switch off of copper that'll go away
When's that happening? 2035 or so?
yeah right
should save them a lot of money in maintenance and electricity
What about fiber though. Need to polish the ends on it all the time
And remove raccoons who might nibble on it
We can pay them to polish it instead
I was joking around at work about getting a house inspection, and the house being called unsafe due to a raccoon infestation, and me buying it and living happily ever after
But yeah, fiber internet to home is great, so little isp bullshit
the likelyhood of full coverage fttp by 2027 is nearly 0%
my dad still literally cannot get fttc
and he's not even that rural
I was talking about a civilised non tea drinking country :)
Of course it won't happen in England
My old job sell microwave links now, because openreach are so crap at rolling it out
i mean i'm essentially getting a microwave link through starlink
i had an awesome 5ghz link 100mbps internet connection, silly neighbours complained
apparently this is obstructing peoples view
Should have put a flag on it, or made it a Ham mast... 😛
i don't own this property, if i did i'd have the deed on it made much less vague
hehe, my expirience working with customers
Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.

wow amazing they're passing an amendment to my state's constitution that will prevent the government from legalizing weed
which state?
TN
links?
and if it changes in federal govt?
and of course if you go to the PAC website he's receiving kickbacks from CoreCivic which is the private prison industry here
will still be illegal here
i never did understand why such people were so against taxes and love giving money to criminals
ah the war on drugs
they'd rather get their piddly donations from PACs than actually do what their constituents want
congrats to drugs for winning the war on drugs
it's a booming industry
well, just imagne the amount of mony you make with jails
imagine the bigger amount of money you make with weed
Its so nice that you dont have a coruption problem as long as you can call it lobbyism
yea.. peanuts
they aren't even being corrupt properly, legalize that shit and load it up with red tape, profit
just look at NJ, that's what they did
here it's legally nationwide for medical use, a whole 4 people have managed to get it legally
you just have to look into Rep. Brandon Ogles of Franklin pockets 😉
This one feels like my place lately:

Anyone with double brick walls ever had them retrofitted with insulation?
no many of us don't live in the stone age
Is 2021 over yet
So, last week I was trying to get Docker running on a diskless Raspberry Pi 4 with rootfs mounted over NFS. And it wasn't working.
Cause, it seems, was the "Docker convenience script" which is how Raspbian users are supposed to install Docker.
Using wget and manually installing .deb files using dpkg, it works just fine.
it seems
I know you were all full of anticipation on this report, so I thought I'd share 😉
no SD card, no SSD
I like using Pi's ... they're cheap and, as long as you stay away from SD cards, pretty reliable
Mine has been ok on an sd card
I realise it will shit the bed at any second but it still works atm
once it does .... NFS mount! 🙂
Once the new MacBook Pro's are out, I'm moving this Mac mini over to Proxmox duty
Sounds like a plan
Ah, Milan servers are launching
Wonder if they will be any more popular than Rome
My guess is, minimal
But the shitkids will still rub it out over the core numbers
Milan servers?
@hearty depot AMD bullcrap
great for HPC, makes little sense for other platforms
but shitkids will fap over those cores
this, best automatic litter box ever so far
there is an HA integration for it too
They need to make an extra-large version so my cat can fit his fat ass inside it...
Don't be so mean to your girlfriend :(
None of my girlfriends were cats, last time I checked...
Gotta love incognito mode
My parents were weird about snooping through my room back when I was living with them... they absolutely did it, but I have no idea wtf they were looking for
Like, they even offered to let me drink / smoke weed with them on numerous occasions (well before I was 21), so I had zero reason to hide a stash of any kind of illicit substance
They were worried if you were into furry milf hentai
Given how homophobic / transphobic they turned out to be... maybe they were looking for my pr0n stash 🤷♀️
lol, just realised that all the files used for components are writeable

groundhog day, we just had the keyboard discussion
or is it a daily topic, yesterday was network rant, today kbd, what's up for tomorrow?-)
Might as well keep talking about keyboards, better than anything in the news
try not to follow much news since i rarely get anything positive out from those, same C numbers and shit each day
funny enough i went to store today and tried out couple of keyboards (actually, had to touch all of them (and wash hands after that)).. 🙂
If anyone wants to weeb it up later, I'm going to watch Akira (1988) later, after playing a stage of SD Gundam G Generation on the switch.

I keep seeing really pretty 60%/80% mechanical keyboards... then I see the price and I close the tab.
money, so 2019
Some of the keycap sets are amazing:
But then it's like... $200 for the base and another $60-100 for the caps.
remind me to show you my seedlings
I have a g710+
yeesh
do the caps do anything except look cool
Looks decent but I'd hate the macro keys. I went for the Corsair K70. Similar layout minus the macros.
I already feel like this is too big for my desk, which is why the 60%/80% stuff is appealing.
It's more that you can customise the entire thing. Pick a keyboard, switches and caps that suit you, switch them out at will.
i need a bigger desk
If you get the off-the-shelf stuff by bigger brands, it's cheaper but more limiting.
a very low priority
I've been happy with the K70 but it's huge.
Bigger desks? Mine's 2m... I just have too much crap on it 😄
34in ultrawide in landscape, second monitor in portrait, bookshelf speakers, MBP, plans, random electronics... 😄
80% seems a nice balance. Who even uses the numpad? But I wouldn't want to lose my F keys.
On the ultrawide? Never done the math. It's 3440x1440
which bookshelf speakers you got out of interest
Edifier something. 1280?
good brand, good sound?
This is my monitor. Built-in KVM, webcam, mic. I wanted to be able to switch seamlessly between MBP and my PC. https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/346P1CRH_00/brilliance-curved-ultrawide-lcd-monitor-with-usb-c
Yeah, sound is great. Really surprising for a low-end set. Replaced a 16 year old surround sound kit that was taking up too much space.
Aye. Didn't have the rear satellites behind me though, so it was like listening to 2.1 😂
PITA getting the sound right too, Windows 10 made it harder because they wanted to sell that shitty Dolby add-on.
It was amazing in Win 7 and 8.
never paid for that when i used win10
It's a massive con. Losing out on basic functionality like sound channels just because you were forced to upgrade your OS... wtf?
I have a Creative Labs card, so it's not like I don't have adequate hardware.
sucky
This is true, which is why I touch-type without using homerow on a normal keyboard 😋
Any keyboard is ergo when you tell homerow to go fuck itself
Stop it. That's my job.
sweet as f.
out of couriosety
Does usb C work with multiple displays?
like its cind of small xD
You mean like daisy chaining? I haven't tried.
Depends on the USB-C port
plz buy another one and try it out 🤣
My second monitor is permanently set up to my PC, so I can leave the news or whatever on that display while I work.
spaceship incoming
If it supports DisplayPort over USB-C, then yeah, you can chain

If someone wants to donate £500 for me to get another, I'll gladly test it
this always interested me
How many words per day do you reckon you could get with that monstrosity?
my fingers are stiff so my 80 wpm is down to maybe 5-10 because of disability
out of the box? 3?
If someone wants to donate me 1719.96€ I'll gladly test it with 2x43" ones
Tasty:
if anyone wants donate me 1000+ any currency i'll happily spend it on myself
I would really really like this
Do you already have an ultrawide?
i've had one - i didn't get on with it
yep, but its bad as hell
https://www.amazon.de/-/en/gp/product/B01AWG5XU8/
I'm happy with mine but I still find I have to turn my head a little too much and that's only with 34in. 43in is nuts unless you're sitting across the room from it.
I got a pair of yamaha monitors that need to be tested and maybe repaired. Needs the case renovating too. Thinking of stripping, filling and painting them
That's not really ultrawide 😂 It's just ultrashort...
i also used a 42" 4k standard monitor, when i was at uni
A colleague uses a 42in 4k TV. I think he's nuts. But it's literally a TV, so he sits across the room.
And at that distance, the extra pixel density isn't helping with text.
lol, with 500% scaling?
scaling pisses me off - why I can use 150% but not like 80
@last cedar want a milkshake?
I hate those cables, no idea why they are flavour of the month
they are?
I am a boring person who likes a back light
Every build on r/mk has that coiled cable
Coiled cables are just so untidy, despite being designed to be the opposite.
Can't just tuck them down the back, they gather up on your desk.
Good clean aesthetic here:
I'm on /r/mk right now. If I bought everything I liked, I'd have no house to keep it in.
I've done it. I've found my perfect keyboard: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/m2rule/hhkb_ansi_gmmk_iso/
Paint it black, bitches.
'coffee'
They make a version with a number pad?
i use a numpad allthe time
maybe i'll admit to chocolate also;)
I can get it on Amazon UK for £70, which seems decent. Then I'd need a set of switches and caps. Amazon has a surprisingly decent selection of caps.
but are they original,or decent quality ?
I can type IP addresses, phone numbers, dates, bank card numbers, MFA codes, and calculator input into a numpad WAY faster than the numrow
or fake with printing that'll rub offafter 5 presses using lead paint
Sure... but how many people spend enough of their time doing it that it matters? I don't.
I do. Lol
Just personal preference 🤷♂️
bills
I hate having a keyboard nearly 40cm long.
Split tented with a numpad module in the middle? 🤔
Yeah, I'm not really fussed about the width of a full size keyboard
when did recruiters start getting so pushy?
they are?
usually i had to push them
You aren't in demand? 😦
I updated my profile on Dice and in the next hour had 13 phone calls and about 20 emails
kinda ridiculous
i've not looked for work in 5 years, i'd imagine my skillset is now vastly outdated
it's ha su repair to do the docker rebuild, yeah?
I've done no looking in close to 7 years
Just imagine how useless Brian is now if you feel bad after 5 😄
s/brian/brain/g 😛
lol... finished work early for a change after putting in extra hours dealing with crap earlier in the week. Check my phone, see a bunch of activity because someone messed something up and they tried calling me several times...
It's Friday night. I'm not picking up 😄
They have something of a 'you touched it last, it's your problem' mentality. If they don't break that, how are all the other devs supposed to learn something?
by avoiding doing as much as possible so they're not the last ones to touch it
git blame
Definitely feels like people avoid work 🤦♂️
I saw our director got added to the call I ignored. Let's see if they bring it up on Monday 😂
code coverage on this project is horrid
7.5% on 44K lines
I've written every single one of those tests
my branch
code smells and security hotspots are 100% inherited and incorrectly detected as "new"
What tool's that? How does it figure out the 'added debt'? 🤔
overall
sonarqube
static code analysis tool
it's got a bunch of different languages it supports
I'm just curious how a static analysis tool can assess technical debt. If it doesn't know how you might need to change your design, how does it know which bits makes that difficult?
Is it purely saying there's a code smell and that it adds X minutes?
It's actually a retro thing
Retro 🤢
The IBM Model M had a coiled keyboard cable, all the way back in the 80's
All of my Commodore Amiga keyboards use coiled cables, as well
Retro can go and die somewhere in a forest. Away from me :)
To be fair, coiled keyboard cables were a nice feature to have back when keyboard garages were a thing...
Who drives their keyboard to work? 🤔
I have never been a fan of any coiled cable tbh
A keyboard garage is a space under a desktop form-factor computer to store the keyboard when not in use:
The Amiga 1000 had one. You can slip the keyboard entirely under the unit
I have a keyboard garage. It's called a desk 😄
Bless you
@deft pewter This is before keyboard trays were even a thing you could buy. lol
Welcome to 1985
@deft pewter yes, the rules that it follows for code smells add a certain time to repair
You're an old fart if you remember 1985.
there's different severity levels to the rules
the biggest ones are cyclomatic complexity
I was born in 1990, but my dad was a Commodore die-hard, so we had Amiga systems until like 1996 or so.
which requiring test coverage usually fixes
Including an Amiga 2000 Video Toaster, and an Amiga 4000 Tower
That's kinda clever, I guess. I've not used a tool like that. Even getting a decent code review out of someone is a challenge. Getting the business to pay for extra shit like that is a big no.
it's free tho
😮
integrates with Jenkins
Wonder if it integrates with Azure DevOps. I'll check it out and recommend it.
the "branch analysis" is part of the commercial offering but since it's open source there's someone who essentially wrote that function and made it available free too
There were PC bridgeboards with better specs than that O.o
Noice. Thanks.
@subtle pasture I think we got it in 92 or 93. Was 52 pounds extra to go to 2MB ram from 1MB
But that's a week's wages!
lol
Heh fair. I just went down an internet search vortex trying to find the fastest x86 bridge-board that was ever made... "486" boards (386 with cache, really) @ 75MHz is about as fast as they ever got
Apparently it's faster to just install a PowerPC accelerator and emulate x86 than to run a bridgeboard.
This was 16Mhz I think
Added another 10TB disk. Day 2 of expanding zzzzzzz
What model Synology?
DS1520+
Also, running SHR1 with 10TB drives? You like to live dangerously...
I'd be on SHR2 at that point, for sure
seagate,brave
well it survive one faulty drive so not that important
the important is backup up externally
tv shows I can redownload
No, the issue is surviving the faulty drive AND not encountering a single URE while rebuilding
anything important or just tv?
the important is backup up daily
tv shows is not, and tv shows is the majority of usage
Fair, though I think I'd burn one drive bay to save myself some time in the future re-downloading everything
my time is way more valuable than a $200 hard disk 😛
Im not such a hoarder anymore like before
when I got 1gb fiber its not really any issue
I have a 1gbps connection as well, I still don't want to deal with it
I would just move forward, not redownload
Also, Comcast caps to contend with...
i'm lucky to get 25mbp/s
a restore from remote backup will get everything up current with docker etc
so can just move on from there
do you pay pr gb?
moore junk @mb?
Welcome to America, home of shitty ISPs
omg omg..i wanna report missing channel ....somebody stole devices channel
Well, it has an app - better be cloud connected 😂
if i go over 1tb my speed gets limited to 5mbp/s
But yeah, it's actually cheaper to buy an entire second NAS than restore 20TB from the cloud, thanks to Comcast
Look at the bright side @subtle pasture you are allowed to install smart outlets yourself. Here you are in big trouble if you touch the electric
i was always touching the prongs on us plugs, thank god it's only 110v
So yeah, one extra drive to run RAID6 rather than RAID5 is no big deal, given the alternatives >_>
yeah the US electric setup is like 1980 in Europe
I cant believe how old method the us use
only gfci/rcd in bathroom/kitchens
outlets, safety, wiring. everything
@midnight adder That varies by state and date of installation. Newer distribution panels use central whole-home gfci
"up to code in the us" was banned in the 80s here
oh good
When we got solar installed, they had to replace our entire distribution panel, and we now have whole-home gfci
Had to remove the gfci outlets in the kitchen and bathroom to avoid weird conflicts
is it one perhome or one per circuit?
Per-breaker
I suppose you could install non-gfci breakers into the panel if you wanted... but why would you?
that said,my previous home still had fuse wire
but do you have automatic fuses, wiring in tubes in wall, seperate wires, not one lead wire
i do now
Whats gfci ?
@late gate I imagine part of the reason for that is because most circuits in US homes are run at 120v, which makes everything safer at baseline
just on paper though. the US grid is 220, just grounded with N
ground fault current interupter
@late gate I'm aware, they center-tap the transformer.
here the norm is 220V. makes everything easier
But that still only exposes humans to 120v in most circumstances
essentially if there's an amount of current that goes to you or straiht to earth it turns off the supply
usually it's at 150ma-300ma
Thx, Sounds like what in the uk would be called an rcbo (residual current breaker with overload)
@noble pivot Ever seen an outlet with "RESET" and "TEST" buttons?
same thing different name
we just use fuses like this http://www.elektris.no/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/PB116501_web.jpg
RCBO 🙂
That's a breaker, not a fuse...
You know you're dealing with an old panel if you see actual fuses:
Uk will be ditching that stuff next year and going for AFDDs which I think they mandate in Germany currently.
give me 240v or give me death
yeah, just a stapled word
what does AFDD standard for?
Arc Fault Detection Device.
Its detects various "sparking" failures as well as earth leakage and over current.
I just wish here in Norway we are allowed to do a bit more. Like simple things like changing a dimmer to a smart dimmer. An electrician charge 100-200USD just to mount it
interesting
Not to be confused with FADD (fart air detection device)
I suppose that's why smart bulbs are a thing
You can't just change them? 😮
Can install them anywhere
@deft pewter illegal
Expensive here at the mo, but expect the price to fall a lot when they become madatory.
@late gate Is it anything like Australia where you can just become your own certified electrician?
The UK's quite flexible. A 'competent person' can do most indoor electrics. The law is a bit vague about what makes a person competent 😄
I know it's illegal for them to change their own switches as well, unless they get certified
I think the only bits that require certification are outdoors and wet areas.
@subtle pasture No you are actually not allowed to do your own work even if you are electrician if you are really going into the law as you cant sign for your own work.
#freedom
Its all lobbying
...they'd have to prove you swapped the switches, though
Not sure how they'd do that
now they say attaching a washing machine need to be illegal to do yourself
just hillarious
...isn't that just a plug-in appliance?
Haha.. because it's soooo difficult to screw a water pipe on.
Right... I don't see how that stops you from plugging the cable into the wall
oh, the water line. That's easy
I installed our last washer dryer. Took seconds to connect... took longer to move the damned thing.
i installed a hvac in my home with no permission or certificationand i suvived
as I said its lobbying. plumbers and electricians are overpaid, and got all power
Be thankful it's just plumbers and electricians
We have lobbies for shit like coal plant operators...
the goverment got random controls
and if they see you have done anything expect a bill of 10-20k USD
How exactly would they "see" you've done something?
tasty
Do they send inspectors to your house with blueprints periodically?
they can check the serial number. everything got manufaction date, and you need papers its installed by professional
Again, who the fuck is checking?
so if they see a new outlet and you dont have papers busted
Who's coming to your door and checking switch serial numbers?
yes
In a private residence?
yes
my HOA requires me to have carpet, no hardwood floors or stone
For your outlets and switches?
inside
yes
tax I guess
thakfullyi don't own it
Who's paying them to visit millions of homes and inspect lightswitch serial numbers?
when you pay up to 50% tax they have to use it for something
Yeah, quite different to the States with their low double digit taxes and all the tax rebates 😄
It's not hard to break 25% taxes, honestly
At which point, set up a corporation and lock in that sweet fixed 20% corporate income tax
because corporations > people in this capitalist hellscape
Keep in mind that our taxes are low, but our infrastructure is crumbling, schools are under-funded, and healthcare is a joke... I'll take the higher tax rate to fix all that >_>
Yeah, properly graduated taxes are a good thing. Those who can afford to pay should.
It'll probably save me money in the end vs. paying for everything NOT covered by taxes out of my own pocket
Exactly
I just checked your tax brackets and they're crazy. Not surprised there's not enough federal funding.
We start at 20% basically as soon as we're earning full-time wages. 40% kicks in at around £50k/year.
@deft pewter Except we actually collect more than enough taxes, but most of it is spent on the military
The glorious MIC 🎉
And yeah, our tax brackets are nowhere near progressive enough
And then you can just bypass the entire progressive tax system by being a corporation...
It's not uncommon to set up an S-Corp and accept all of your income / credit / liability through that entity instead of accepting it personally, if you're making $100,000 a year or more.
The money saved on taxes can actually pay for a personal attorney to handle the re-filing of the paperwork for the s-corp that's required every year.
So the scheme literally pays for itself, at that point...
That's nuts
Gotta admit, I'd be tempted to do it too with all the money it'd save...
What's even more nuts is an S-Corp protects your personal assets from liability... and has its own credit score
Between tax, NI and student loan repayments, I'm down 50% of my earnings each month.
even better!
You can open lines of credit, default on them, and even bankrupt the s-corp... with zero personal risk
An LLC won't protect your personal assets as cleanly as an S-Corp does, though
it's a "who gives a shit" at that point though
I write code and have a 1MM insurance policy
it'd be pretty fucking hard to overrun that
anyhow, you can set up a solo 401k
then pay yourself a "reasonable salary"
scorp?
Lol, yeah, you can buy your own health insurance for your employees (you)
and you can then have the business contribute to your solo 401k for up to 25% of your taxable wage on top of the 401k limits
And since you're an employer supplying insurance to employees, there's a kickback for that too
up to 55K/yr
Welcome to the very bottom-end of "rich people finances"
Where fucky shit starts to happen
I am not a rich person
if you're using an s-corp to reduce your tax rate, you're acting like one 🤔
there's a MASSIVE difference between top 5% and top 4%
Can't blame people for making the best of the available options.
I'm a contractor
it's ridiculous to piss away money on self-employment taxation if I don't have to
Ah, yeah, then might as well set up an s-corp even if you're not at the magic $100,000/year mark
or an LLC, in your case
Right, so... rich-people finances it is...
I'm not rich
I have money leftover after paying for stuff
I'm well-off
@tidal bronze is definitely rich
You don't have to be the top 1% of earners to start doing finances like a rich person 😛
Also, your income is already well above average
@last plaza is it donorcycle season there yet?
Above average but not obscene 🤷♂️
Never said it was obscene, lol
I usually end up paying the average US income in taxes yearly
There's still a detectable amount of derision though
Just high enough to start taking advantage of things that are literally impossible with a lesser income
Almost
nah, I was doing this when I was making less than 6 figures
No?
Like, literally, no.
If there's any derision, it's for the US tax code
I see so many folks started their bikes already. I don’t take it out unless it is 75 and above.
And toward anyone you're labelling as doing 'rich people finances' 🤷♂️
I think the cap on social security earnings is a big "missed point"
@deft pewter Uh, no? I'm actively advocating for taking advantage of rich people finances if you can
like "backdoor" Roth contributions?
That the contribution scheme with a double-tax break?
I'm a little disillusioned with retirement accounts. My crypto portfolio consistently outperforms my 401k 🤷♀️
after a certain point there's no tax break
Gotta have a few sources of income when you retire imo
I can't deduct crypto contributions come tax time though
I mean, you can if you realize any losses 😂
This man know the way ^
That said, you can hodl while also using your funds. Take out a crypto-backed loan.
I don't need a loan tho
Some people need the fake debt for their taxes 🤷♀️
I've got debt
But really, throwing it out there as an option for using your Crypto funds without actually converting back to fiat (which would incur capital gains tax)
Taking out a crypto-baked loan bypasses that entire problem
