@unkempt sage We have multiple clients that fail-over to the cloud, which means a complete copy of their on-prem infra replicated to Azure or AWS

#

They can be back online in minutes, even if their on-prem offices burn to the ground

unkempt sage
#

i completley see thepoint of on-prem. i also completley see point of cloud, am stuck in a morass of "but you can do both with this easy to sue addon" (aka shitfest that is NOT easy, nor USEFUL)

clear ferry
#

I think I've had.... Close to two dozen different customers try to implement storage spaces the last 8 years, in all shapes and sizes, noone is still running it

#

Hybrid cloud is the future

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry So...why aren't they running it?

unkempt sage
#

storage-spaces = crapware, = promises by marketing/sales, doesnt ACTUALLY do what people actaully need

subtle pasture
#

I've had zero issues with Storage Spaces deployments... what are y'all running into, exactly?

clear ferry
#

And Microsoft refuses to actually tell customers their setup is supported, which is great

#

Customers just want a solution that works and gives them five nines or more, and the vendor takes responsibility

subtle pasture
#

Right... I dunno how you get any more "just works" than Storage Spaces Direct...

#

You slide in a new blade server, the storage auto-pools, done...

clear ferry
#

It might work like that now, it did not in the past

subtle pasture
#

It's probably the simplest network raid/pooling system I've ever used

clear ferry
#

And customers won't touch something that burned them before

#

So you have a full PFC enabled network stack between all nodes? With rdma running?

#

Cross site even

subtle pasture
#

Haven't had to make a single cluster span multiple sites, but yes the first two

gusty wraith
#

can't trust m$ anymore after the shit i've seen with hyper-v 😄

subtle pasture
#

Gotta love blade server fabrics

#

@gusty wraith "the shit"?

gusty wraith
#

mem leaks on the management service

velvet horizonBOT
subtle pasture
#

I mean, that's every hypervisor at some point... ESX / ESXi, Openstack, Hyper-V, KVM...

#

They've literally all had to have memory leaks patched... or worse...

#

ESXi / vCenter just had a nasty root exploit

gusty wraith
#

yeah but never had those issues with vmware...ever

subtle pasture
#

So I guess you can't trust anyone. lol

unkempt sage
#

dammit, it wasnt a code wall, it was a well (ish) reasoned argument against CTO level mgmt

gusty wraith
#

and whoever connects his esx directly to the interwebs is a dork

#

scrap that

subtle pasture
#

Direct? Uh... you've never heard of a lateral attack?

#

SalesBro opens an attachment, boom, root shell into vCenter

#

You should patch regardless...

gusty wraith
#

whoever connects his mgmt directly to the campus network deserves to get fired asap

subtle pasture
#

That would be 99% of SMB clients

#

And they refuse to pay to fix it

#

Ask me how I know...

gusty wraith
#

i always tell to decrease the attack vectors instead of smearing AV all over the devices for example

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, same, they won't pay for the massive project required to set up VLANs, routing, and ACLs

gusty wraith
#

yup...sadly

subtle pasture
#

And for SMB clients, it often requires new hardware

gusty wraith
#

better pay some random snake oil vendor

subtle pasture
#

Regardless... nobody is perfect. Root exploits and memory leaks everywhere...

#

vCenter 7 will still bend over and eat its own ass eventually if you don't reconfigure it. The default settings ensure that logging fills up its root partition and causes the whole thing to crash (eventually)

#

That's been a problem since the beginning of time

gusty wraith
#

that's true...shit gets nastier every day. things we never thought would be possible are now turning into CVEs on a daily basis

subtle pasture
#

Oh, and don't forget all the people running virtualized firewall/routers...

#

They have an ESXi host connected directly to WAN...

#

That's fun to secure

gusty wraith
#

that's why there are people who actually learn and practice to set up such systems.... but the random dude with nice vocabulary and trustworthy appearance might not know the whole truth but gets the contract anyways

#

it's always fun and games until a crypto trojan enters the realm 😄

subtle pasture
#

Actually... my previous employer used virtualized Untangle as their firewall and router... shit, they're probably 100% open to that root exploit

#

Assuming they're still running VMWare's stack. I haven't worked there in like 6 years

gusty wraith
#

yeah like i said...never put core infra on the edge....hypervisors should never, ever run on networks that might be exploited easily

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, there's a reason I went and bought physical hardware to run pfSense, even though everyone and their mom told me to virtualize it...

gusty wraith
#

and stuff gets interesting now with virtualized fabrics

subtle pasture
#

Though one of the biggest reasons to make it physical was so that my entire virtualized infra could shit the bed, and internet would stay up

gusty wraith
#

now, imagine, some numpty says he could save money by virtualizing not only the core network but also the SAN not thinking about the hypervisor that runs the stuff which is sitting pants down on the wan

subtle pasture
#

I've seen it, yeah

gusty wraith
#

yeah same reason i bought myself a mikrotik and ut the (expensive) server into the lab at work

#

Ha runs on a rpi now....went down from 120w to say 10-15w

#

and i do love a proper swearing session with iptables 😄

#

when even the cat leaves the room because it's getting too loud you know shit's not working as expected 😄

#

i wonder what crazy stuff i'll see as soon as i receive some contracts but right now it's certification time.... have to do ccna, dell associate and prof. in order to receive "the good stuff"

#

things no previous employer was willing to pay... now this one requires it and pays it. what should i say...

subtle pasture
#

What's annoying is my servers, the ones I built, are dead silent

#

It's the damn Synology NAS that's loud AF

gusty wraith
#

classic

#

19'' model?

subtle pasture
#

Synology RS2414RP+
2U, 12 bay, dual PSU

gusty wraith
#

uh oh..i know that thing

subtle pasture
#

It doesn't have the CPU fault, don't worry

gusty wraith
#

annoying AF

#

pretty resilient...

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, it's a tank that'll run forever, pretty much

gusty wraith
#

but effing slow on the rebuild

subtle pasture
#

That's mostly due to the default memory configuration...

#

Adding a second stick of RAM makes a huge difference to rebuild times

gusty wraith
#

yeah but the backplane is quite slow... i had the 8gig versions i guess... 2 of them as a HA cluster

subtle pasture
#

A big reason for that is because Synology DSM automatically enables memory compression if you have a nas with less than 4GB of RAM installed, and memory compression steals a ton of CPU cycles. Add RAM, get CPU performance. lol

gusty wraith
#

nah. bs...4gig

subtle pasture
#

I haven't really had to push the backplane, mostly because the NAS is limited to 4x 1gbps NICs

#

The most load it sees is when NFS 4 (multipathed) hits it across multiple links

gusty wraith
#

i never reached more than 300mb/s when rebuilding...dunno why and since it was used as an archive it never was an issue if it took days to sync its disks. second copy was always available, being an HA

subtle pasture
#

Also, Synology needs to hurry up and release some USB 3.0 NICs for their NAS's...

#

QNAP already did it

gusty wraith
#

well - network sync is another thing... i wish those devices had 10g links

subtle pasture
#

You can slap a 5gbps NIC on any QNAP NAS because they have an official USB 3.0 NIC

gusty wraith
#

or even QFP+

#

yummy

subtle pasture
#

And people have already custom-compiled NIC drivers for Synology DSM and proven that USB NICs work fine... including the QNAP NIC

#

But Synology seems to have no interest in it

gusty wraith
#

but...you know...synology is not targeted at data center-esque applications anyways

subtle pasture
#

Tell that to their high-end full-SSD shelf units...

gusty wraith
#

no game for purestorage...sorry

subtle pasture
#

Screaming fast 🤷‍♀️

#

Also one of the few physical SQL clusters we've had to set up

#

Microsoft Dynamics AX is a beast

#

It's a crime it doesn't come standard with 40gbps NICs, because it can absolutely max them out once installed

gusty wraith
#

that's a shame indeed

subtle pasture
#

At least it has two PCIe slots for additional NICs 😛

gusty wraith
#

maybe i'll take a deep dive into netapp and pure some day... i know those things are behemoths

#

but 6-figure flavored

#

would like to see a switch glowing red trying to keep up with the data flow

#

that'll be a display to remember

#

anyways...need a nap now... brain requires immediate maintenance downtime 😄

subtle pasture
#

Unrelated: Time for new keycaps...

#

They make these by taking clear plastic keyscaps, dipping them in black paint, then laser-etching the legends (burns away the paint)

#

Apparently my fingernails are rough on the edges of the keycaps...

#

I wonder if anyone makes true double-shot keycaps for LED-backlit boards 🤔

Facebook just let me know that eight years ago today I stipulated the following

If a task requiring the time t to complete shall be completed N times, but can be automated such that it requires the time t' to complete it's worth spending the time T=f*N*(t-t') to do so, where f in (number > 0) is your Nerd Factor.
Thomas general theorem of automation.
Not valid for very large N, t' which does not require monitoring or presence, or in proximity to deadlines/finals week when the behavior of T grows chaotic.

Know what i love? How iPhones connected to a computer via USB won't take charge all night if you don't unlock it and say that you "trust" this device. That's a great design decision.

dusky plank
#

it's a security feature, not so worth it for every day use but can help you get your data protected in case of loss

low harness
#

Yes, but the USB connecton has two distinct uses. Why can't it charge without allowing data to be sent and received?

#

That actually has to opposite effect, because you have to trust a potentially unsafe computer even if all you need is to top up your battery.

lapis cipher

it says "i" so again not surprised

dusky plank

no because assuming you lost your device a foreigner has only limited tries to guess your phone code (beneath those time paddings after failed tries)....

to expand upon that a little... it got no more interest from other people claiming to have the issue (suggesting it's not a big deal) and no interest from any develop willing to spend time investigating and fixing it. Many users are having issues, i.e booting from usb with SSD on OS above 5.4. Closing it does not solve anything. The current work around is not update the OS. Suggesting this is not a big deal is not true. It is for a lot of people

It creates a Lambda function on your AWS account that handles DDNS formatted requests and updates your DNS records in Route53. Then you set up ddclient on your server to point at that Lambda.

You can tweak the polling frequency and stuff but basically it'll watch for your external IP changing (or new subdomains being added to the config) and sort your records for you.

midnight adder

i had them run a new line between my property and the junction box outside

#

fixed 50% of it

clever mortar
#

Mine turned out to be exchange side - either the port or the card, not sure which

midnight adder
#

AA ISP gave them a kick up the rear

clever mortar
#

Yeah, AA are one of the good ones

midnight adder
#

to give the DSL it's fair credit, for a twisted pair of unshielded cables it does remarkably well

#

we have an exceptional RF rich enviornment

#

especially in the frequency they operate in

clever mortar
#

deft pewter
#

When's that happening? 2035 or so?

midnight adder

yeah right

clever mortar

#

yeah the US electric setup is like 1980 in Europe

"old method"?

#

The outlets?

midnight adder
#

only gfci/rcd in bathroom/kitchens

late gate

outlets, safety, wiring. everything

subtle pasture
#

@midnight adder That varies by state and date of installation. Newer distribution panels use central whole-home gfci

late gate

"up to code in the us" was banned in the 80s here

midnight adder
#

oh good

subtle pasture
#

When we got solar installed, they had to replace our entire distribution panel, and we now have whole-home gfci

#

Had to remove the gfci outlets in the kitchen and bathroom to avoid weird conflicts

midnight adder

is it one perhome or one per circuit?

Per-breaker

I suppose you could install non-gfci breakers into the panel if you wanted... but why would you?

midnight adder

noble pivot
#

Whats gfci ?

subtle pasture
#

@late gate I imagine part of the reason for that is because most circuits in US homes are run at 120v, which makes everything safer at baseline

The UK's quite flexible. A 'competent person' can do most indoor electrics. The law is a bit vague about what makes a person competent 😄

subtle pasture
#

I know it's illegal for them to change their own switches as well, unless they get certified

deft pewter
#

I think the only bits that require certification are outdoors and wet areas.

late gate
#

@subtle pasture No you are actually not allowed to do your own work even if you are electrician if you are really going into the law as you cant sign for your own work.

midnight adder
#

#freedom

late gate
#

Its all lobbying

subtle pasture
#

...they'd have to prove you swapped the switches, though

#

Not sure how they'd do that

late gate
#

now they say attaching a washing machine need to be illegal to do yourself

#

just hillarious

subtle pasture
#

...isn't that just a plug-in appliance?

late gate
#

it is, but the water

#

its too hard twisting that on lol

deft pewter
#

Haha.. because it's soooo difficult to screw a water pipe on.

subtle pasture
#

Right... I don't see how that stops you from plugging the cable into the wall

#

oh, the water line. That's easy

deft pewter
#

I installed our last washer dryer. Took seconds to connect... took longer to move the damned thing.

midnight adder
#

i installed a hvac in my home with no permission or certificationand i suvived

late gate
#

as I said its lobbying. plumbers and electricians are overpaid, and got all power

subtle pasture
#

Be thankful it's just plumbers and electricians

#

We have lobbies for shit like coal plant operators...

late gate
#

the goverment got random controls

#

and if they see you have done anything expect a bill of 10-20k USD

subtle pasture
#

How exactly would they "see" you've done something?

midnight adder
#

tasty

subtle pasture
#

Do they send inspectors to your house with blueprints periodically?

late gate
#

they can check the serial number. everything got manufaction date, and you need papers its installed by professional

subtle pasture
#

Again, who the fuck is checking?

late gate
#

so if they see a new outlet and you dont have papers busted

subtle pasture
#

Who's coming to your door and checking switch serial numbers?

late gate
#

they did it here in this house

#

random control

subtle pasture
#

So you DO get random visits from government inspectors?

#

wtf?

late gate
#

yes

subtle pasture
#

In a private residence?

late gate
#

yes

midnight adder
#

my HOA requires me to have carpet, no hardwood floors or stone

subtle pasture
#

For your outlets and switches?

midnight adder
#

inside

late gate
#

yes

subtle pasture
#

That's insane

#

Who's paying them?

late gate
#

tax I guess

deft pewter
#

So... Aleks paid them

#

Fool.

midnight adder
#

thakfullyi don't own it

subtle pasture
#

Who's paying them to visit millions of homes and inspect lightswitch serial numbers?

late gate
#

when you pay up to 50% tax they have to use it for something

subtle pasture
#

We just waste it on the military...

#

<_<

deft pewter
#

Yeah, quite different to the States with their low double digit taxes and all the tax rebates 😄

subtle pasture
#

It's not hard to break 25% taxes, honestly

deft pewter
#

Not hard to break 40% here... 🤷‍♂️

#

And then there's National Insurance at 12%

subtle pasture
#

At which point, set up a corporation and lock in that sweet fixed 20% corporate income tax

late gate
#

in general most is tax

#

since you got 40-50% income tax and 25% tax on products

subtle pasture
#

because corporations > people in this capitalist hellscape

subtle pasture
deft pewter
#

Yeah, properly graduated taxes are a good thing. Those who can afford to pay should.

subtle pasture
#

It'll probably save me money in the end vs. paying for everything NOT covered by taxes out of my own pocket

deft pewter
#

Exactly

midnight adder
#

25%?

#

yeesh

deft pewter
#

I just checked your tax brackets and they're crazy. Not surprised there's not enough federal funding.

#

We start at 20% basically as soon as we're earning full-time wages. 40% kicks in at around £50k/year.

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter Except we actually collect more than enough taxes, but most of it is spent on the military

deft pewter
#

The glorious MIC 🎉

subtle pasture
#

And yeah, our tax brackets are nowhere near progressive enough

#

And then you can just bypass the entire progressive tax system by being a corporation...

#

It's not uncommon to set up an S-Corp and accept all of your income / credit / liability through that entity instead of accepting it personally, if you're making $100,000 a year or more.

#

The money saved on taxes can actually pay for a personal attorney to handle the re-filing of the paperwork for the s-corp that's required every year.

#

So the scheme literally pays for itself, at that point...

deft pewter
#

That's nuts

#

Gotta admit, I'd be tempted to do it too with all the money it'd save...

subtle pasture
#

What's even more nuts is an S-Corp protects your personal assets from liability... and has its own credit score

deft pewter
#

Between tax, NI and student loan repayments, I'm down 50% of my earnings each month.

last dirge
#

even better!

subtle pasture
#

You can open lines of credit, default on them, and even bankrupt the s-corp... with zero personal risk

last dirge
#

you can set up a LLC

#

and choose to be taxed as an S-corp

subtle pasture
#

An LLC won't protect your personal assets as cleanly as an S-Corp does, though

last dirge
#

it's a "who gives a shit" at that point though

#

I write code and have a 1MM insurance policy

#

it'd be pretty fucking hard to overrun that

#

anyhow, you can set up a solo 401k

#

then pay yourself a "reasonable salary"

midnight adder
#

scorp?

subtle pasture
#

Lol, yeah, you can buy your own health insurance for your employees (you)

last dirge
#

and you can then have the business contribute to your solo 401k for up to 25% of your taxable wage on top of the 401k limits

subtle pasture
#

And since you're an employer supplying insurance to employees, there's a kickback for that too

last dirge
#

up to 55K/yr

subtle pasture
#

Welcome to the very bottom-end of "rich people finances"

#

Where fucky shit starts to happen

last dirge
#

I am not a rich person

subtle pasture
#

if you're using an s-corp to reduce your tax rate, you're acting like one 🤔

last dirge
#

there's a MASSIVE difference between top 5% and top 4%

deft pewter
#

Can't blame people for making the best of the available options.

last dirge
#

I'm a contractor

#

it's ridiculous to piss away money on self-employment taxation if I don't have to

subtle pasture
#

Ah, yeah, then might as well set up an s-corp even if you're not at the magic $100,000/year mark

#

or an LLC, in your case

last dirge
#

I'm above that mark

#

but not insanely so

subtle pasture
#

Right, so... rich-people finances it is...

last dirge
#

I'm not rich

#

I have money leftover after paying for stuff

#

I'm well-off

#

@tidal bronze is definitely rich

subtle pasture
#

You don't have to be the top 1% of earners to start doing finances like a rich person 😛

#

Also, your income is already well above average

last dirge
#

@last plaza is it donorcycle season there yet?

deft pewter
#

Above average but not obscene 🤷‍♂️

subtle pasture
#

Never said it was obscene, lol

last dirge
#

I usually end up paying the average US income in taxes yearly

deft pewter
#

There's still a detectable amount of derision though

subtle pasture
#

Just high enough to start taking advantage of things that are literally impossible with a lesser income

last dirge
#

nah, I was doing this when I was making less than 6 figures

subtle pasture
#

Like, literally, no.

#

If there's any derision, it's for the US tax code

last plaza
#

I see so many folks started their bikes already. I don’t take it out unless it is 75 and above.

deft pewter
#

And toward anyone you're labelling as doing 'rich people finances' 🤷‍♂️

last dirge
#

I think the cap on social security earnings is a big "missed point"

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter Uh, no? I'm actively advocating for taking advantage of rich people finances if you can

last dirge
#

like "backdoor" Roth contributions?

subtle pasture
#

That the contribution scheme with a double-tax break?

#

I'm a little disillusioned with retirement accounts. My crypto portfolio consistently outperforms my 401k 🤷‍♀️

last dirge
#

after a certain point there's no tax break

crude acorn
#

Gotta have a few sources of income when you retire imo

last dirge
#

I can't deduct crypto contributions come tax time though

subtle pasture
last dirge
#

no sell

#

only hodl

subtle pasture
#

This man know the way ^

#

That said, you can hodl while also using your funds. Take out a crypto-backed loan.

last dirge
#

I don't need a loan tho

subtle pasture
#

Some people need the fake debt for their taxes 🤷‍♀️

last dirge
#

I've got debt

subtle pasture
#

But really, throwing it out there as an option for using your Crypto funds without actually converting back to fiat (which would incur capital gains tax)

#

Taking out a crypto-baked loan bypasses that entire problem

last dirge
#

at far lower rates than any of my investment returns

#

so it's a no-brainer

#

this one job's requirements are "8+ years with java 8+"

#

HMMMMMM

subtle pasture
#

lulz

#

Plot twist: It's a test.
