I should go to Chippewa falls though

It looks pretty

And a lot of our US factory work is there

winter wren

you will sell your current laptop @clear ferry

clear ferry

Since it isn't working, no

It died, so I'm distributing the memory and drives to my collegues

winter wren

clear ferry

It has 48G and 512+256GB NVMe so it should be reused

winter wren
#

indeed :))

#

i am happy that my nas was upgraded from 4 to 8 gb :)))))

#

but i want to change , not sure what to have

clear ferry
#

My NAS is 128GB ๐Ÿคฃ

winter wren
#

home-made or something from nasa?

clear ferry
#

Just a Dell R510 with some drives and 24 cores

winter wren
#

what os u run on your nas?

deft pewter
#

Most of us don't have enterprise gear

winter wren
#

want something simplier with max 4 bay

deft pewter
#

I need to figure out an affordable DIY NAS as well. Gonna run SCALE and see if it's as good as atx claims.

clear ferry
#

@winter wren Truenas scale here

#

Running nightly alpha now

#

Because I know what I'm doing most of the time

#

๐Ÿคฃ

#

With 4 bays a used HPE microserver gen8 or Gen9 is popular

hpe micro....hm...asking google

#

*TrueNAS SCALE is in early development and is not recommended for production use until 2021

Truenas CORE 12 is fully stable

But it is BSD based and no docker support

clear ferry
#

Or even better, docker containers

#

I think I need to replace some batteries

winter wren
#

maybe i can play with docker containers...but i am not so technical

clear ferry
#

If you can understand VMs you can understand docker containers

#

Less overhead and more flexible

winter wren
#

and u manage dockers with ?

clear ferry
#

Docker-compose (which uses docker commands under the hood) or docker commands directly

winter wren

directly under scale ?

clear ferry

Yes, the frontend for scale is still... Not there

With very few applications

Hey guys, since being new to this channel and even though i have been using HA for some time now i still feel like a newbie!

I have HA installed on a raspberry 4, so.. is that homeassistant_os as installation method? =/ damn i feel stupid

Yes

junior vector

Yes, i did! Thank you!

Good news is that the folks over there can help you, if they're around ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Assuming, of course, you have a snapshot you downloaded...

junior vector
#

I dont, that was my next question. Is there a way to keep a backup of my installation.. now i know! ๐Ÿ˜› haha

clever mortar
#

If you flashed it already, it's a bit late

junior vector
#

Yeah i know m8, my setup is fairly small so it's no biggie but i have plans that will make it bigger and for the future! ๐Ÿ˜„

clever mortar

But, snapshots aren't backup until you have them off the host. Still, that's technically support, and we don't do that in this channel ๐Ÿ˜›

junior vector

Only customers I go onsite to the last 12 months are military or high profile

clever mortar
#

While we won't all go fully WFH I'm fully expecting that our future will be considerably more flexible - and some of my colleagues have been full time WFH for years

#

For me it's amusing, the main thing that'll take me back into the office would be meeting my team, but it's looking like my next team will be global, so ... shrug

clear ferry

More time to visit cunts in Oslo and Newcastle then you see

Step #1 in that - get a team member in Oslo...

hushed basalt

I like doing wfh while my daughter is at daycare

clear ferry

You mean every day @hushed basalt ?

hushed basalt

#

Which is nice since it lights up with breakfast day

clear ferry

Oh right, child care is sucky in Australia too

hushed basalt

But daycare days isn't equal to working days no

wraith temple
#

i've removed a lot of the experimental stuff, and dialled it back to the more 'hardened' components if that makes sense

#

agree @noble pivot - part of me wonders if someone is keen. my thought initially is to charge a % of hardware costs, and some time to sit down with them and help get set up, and hand over the keys (more of a consulting gig - if they are technical enough) - in a tech bubble here, so chances not terrible

#

everything is removable, so I'm ok with that - but i think i'll do a rack with server + UDM PRO + switch + UPS next time.

noble pivot
#

Never assumed I might take stuff with me but did assume most people probably would not actually want some "homebrew" unsupported system. Chance of getting someone quite so technical as a buyer seemd low.

Given the price of a house move I would be happy to just buy new and start again (and probably do it better with previous experience in mind)

#

Last time I tried Plex (a long time ago) it wasnโ€™t possible to turn transcoding off. Is that still the case?

clever mortar
#

Wasn't possible on what?

#

I run it with transcoding enabled just fine on a non-Pi

hushed basalt
#

It's a lot better now

#

But just use a good client

clever mortar
#

I've always made it a point to encode my material (Handbrake FTW) to a format that most of my devices can natively play

#

The only time transcoding has been needed is when remote, and that's worked flawlessly

clear ferry
#

I don't even notice if anything is transcoding tbh

subtle pasture
#

Basically, if you're seeing transcoding on your own local network, you're trying to play a codec your client device doesn't support, and Plex is fixing it for you.

clever mortar
#

(sorry, I shouldn't snark)

subtle pasture
#

There are also edge cases where Plex will transcode even if the target device technically supports the codec, but has known issues

clever mortar
#

One "easy" fix is to have multiple versions of your media, pre-encoded to suit

#

It's just disk space after all ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

Psssh, let them transcode

subtle pasture
#

I mean, even that doesn't fix it. I have a ton of old anamorphic encodes (DVD rips done with handbrake) that require transcoding to play back on my Nvidia Shield because the Android TV 8.2 update introduced a bug in the built-in media player...

#

They're standard old h.264 video, but I've had to tell Plex to transcode them anyway, because otherwise the aspect ratio displays incorrectly

clever mortar
#

Disable video stream transcoding
Plex has a setting to turn off video transcoding

subtle pasture
#

Also, Handbrake REALLY needs to get the option to stretch anamorphic video. Currently it only supports leaving it as-is, or squishing it.

clear ferry
#

Wherever I read anamorphic this is all that is in my head

subtle pasture
#

Squishing it drastically reduces the final video quality in a lot of cases, and leaving it as-is requires the video player actually read the aspect ratio flag...

#

Stretching bloats the file size, but without quality loss, and then pretty much anything will play it... but Handbrake won't let you do it ๐Ÿ˜•

clear ferry
#

I saw there was a new software now that automatically converts all your media to specific formats

#

Same people who made sonarr etc I think

subtle pasture
#

I mean, the problem is the videos in question are already properly formatted...

#

Like, they're fully h.264 / MKV standards compliant. Tags are all in-order, etc.

#

The issue is Google fucked up an Android TV update, and now some files don't play correctly, through no fault of the files themselves...

#

So I just have Plex transcode them, real-time, when I want to play one. Sucks ๐Ÿ˜•

clear ferry
#

So it's just a you problem, I told you to get rid of the shield NM_PeepoTongue

Doesn't help. FireTV has the same problem now.

subtle pasture

wooden egret

Most providers also don't seem to much care anything further from their infra so it was actually quite amazing to be reporting issues with their network connectivity when they didn't see it themselves. This was a problem for us because the sold us both co-location/hosting AND the internet connectivity so from a customer point of view it was their fault anyways (nor we can report issues of the isp straight to isps)

Hi all, new here. I am weaning off of Wink and decided to go with HA. I am on my 4th and successful attempt to get HA up and running. The trial and error process has been valuable as well as all of the online info readily at hand. 1. Don't bother with Windows and a VM due to trouble with consistent USB detection/assignment. 2. Using a PI-3, works very well but I started with an old Micro-SD and it was taking a long time to do anything. 3. I bought a fast A2 V30 Micro-SD and learned it is an absolute must. 4. Snapshot restore on a new install works! Up and running and learning as I go. I have a handful of devices moved over and now to tackle the 20 or so Lutron Caseta devices and automations. Second thing to do is...

Assuming you're not using something as stupid as password or other trivial passwords, don't worry.

Oh I know

I'm not expecting that level

burnt cave
#

are there are any journals out there that would publish a paper that I, a non-scientist, wrote for fun?

#

although I guess I technically would be a scientist if I'm conducting science

#

it's a statistical analysis of rock paper scissors strategy

static schooner
#

โ€˜The difference between science and screwing around is writing it downโ€™ ๐Ÿ™‚

burnt cave
#

so far my conclusion is that there are indeed methods you can use to gain an advantage over human players, however no strategy employed gains an advantage over a computer picking purely at random

#

which is pretty much what I expected

#

still working out which strategy is "best" though

hushed basalt
#

Is it just 1/3rd chance win/lose/draw no matter what you do

#

I think if you stuck to one move or did random every time the results would be the same over time, against a random computer

burnt cave
#

against purely random player yes

#

humans aren't random though even if they try to be

hushed basalt
#

For humans though that's a tough one

#

Has someone done a ML against humans study

burnt cave
#

and most people do employ some amount of strategy, like picking their next move as the one that beats the opponents previous move

hushed basalt
#

Where the machine tries to actually predict and win

burnt cave
#

lol that's part of my paper

#

still half finished though

hushed basalt

I'd read what other people have already done

Then build off that. I'm sure someones done something

I have a decent sized dataset

it's not too hard to train a DNN yourself

hmm would this be the appropriate channel to ask about non-smart bulbs?

i'm still in pursuit of the perfect LED bulb, closest I've gotten is GE Reveal but it strobes a bit with fast motion

the effect is noticeably less than with cheap bulbs though

clear ferry

@forest edge don't worry @burnt cave is in the land of the free, brave and supersize me

burnt cave
#

if you look out for it you'll notice it pretty often, esp with cheaper bulbs

#

wave your hand in front of your face to check

#

also it's kinda wild to think that the room is technically dark half the time

forest edge
#

yea no.. i don't know what bulbs you been buying but whatever they are you went too damn cheap lol

burnt cave
#

most everyone I know buys the big packs of cheap bulbs from home depot or walmart or whatever

#

i don't know how it doesn't give them a headache

#

i'm pretty sure the cheap ones just run AC through the LED with a current limiting resistor

#

so you get real bad 60hz flicker in US

#

I shouldn't say everyone I know, a few people I know

last cedar
#

At minimum brightness on trรฅdfris I can detect a hint on some colours

burnt cave
#

I want to say that non-dimmable LED bulbs are much less susceptible

clear ferry
#

I still have 3 dumb bulbs left in my house

#

I should change them

burnt cave
#

simply cause the cheap ones are dimmable by their nature

#

I wish the tuya bulbs were still ESP based

clear ferry
#

Well

#

Just transplant an esp in

#

They are usually pin compatible

burnt cave
#

i would rather not have to manually modify every light I purchase

#

a lot of em are sealed now where it's hard to open them non destructively

clear ferry
#

I know tediore does transplant on all his tuya stuff

#

Has a box of surplus tuya chips now

#

burnt cave
#

my anecdotal experience is some RGB ones

#

maybe white ones are different but I would guess not

#

zigbee or z-wave would be cool if the bulbs weren't so damn expensive

clear ferry

I do zigbee bulbs exclusively, except two WiFi bulbs

burnt cave

do you use those ikea ones?

Mostly tradfri yes

those play nice with standard zigbee stuff?

not NY i mean NJ

clear ferry

I know it was some places

forest edge

I think oregon is the same cept it's not a law there, they jkust still offer full service

Oregon also apparently

#

In the state of Missouri, it is lawful for any person to castrate a bull or ram or boar hog thatโ€™s been running loose for three days, provided three residents of the town it is loose in serve as witnesses to its rampaging. Itโ€™s obviously illegal before that or with any fewer witnesses, so donโ€™t even try.

lol

alot of old laws are still about

dusky plank

it is illegal to fart on a public parking place somewhere in us, it's also illegal to let a donkey sleep over night in bathtubs in some places

not ever heard of that but considering some of the small ass rural towns we got I don't doubt it

considering it's been airing since the 60's...

I don't put much faith in any of the network's news or news shows

clear ferry

Based onย ratings,ย 60 Minutesย is the most successful program in U.S. television history since it was moved into its present timeslot in 1975. For five of its seasons it has been that year's top program, a feat matched by theย sitcomsย All in the Familyย andย The Cosby Show, and surpassed only by the reality competition seriesย American Idol, which had been the #1 show for eight consecutive seasons from the 2003โ€“2004 television season up to the 2010โ€“2011 season.ย 60 Minutesย was a top ten show for 23 seasons in a row (1977โ€“2000), an unsurpassed record, and has made the Top 20 for every season since the 1976โ€“1977 season, except the 2005โ€“2006 season, when it finished at #21

tbh, you don't even make more of the news. You're one country.

#

There's so much more going on around the world all the time and it's kinda strange to have such a US-centric view. I appreciate that most people will naturally be more interested in their own nation than in others... but the US seem to take it to an extreme.

#

If you look at newspapers in Europe, you'll see foreign news on the front pages. If you do the same in the US, you could believe that there's no such thing as foreign nations.

I just saw the whitest person Ive ever seen

An old lady with a white bomber jacket, white pants, white hat, white shoes and white gloves

Taking a walk

That's almost as good as people wearing all black and walking on unlit roads.

clear ferry

You mean like 80% of people?

deft pewter
#

80% of people don't walk on roads here. We built sidewalks for them ๐Ÿ˜„

clear ferry
#

I'm surprised more people aren't killed in Norway per year, but compared to many other countries we have pretty good seperate pedestrian areas away from the road

deft pewter
#

But yeah... at least 80% of people are dumb.

clear ferry

Usually it is a 2m ditch between the sidewalk and the road

As such

deft pewter

Americans would just take that as a challenge ๐Ÿ˜„

I've seen enough YouTube to know that's not a challenge, that's merely an inconvenience

Fun fact, there was so much roadwork in Georgia that I had to jaywalk multiple times to cross the road

One time I did it in front of a police car

deft pewter

Next time we go, there'll be a handy pedestrian bridge to take - that's what they were building that meant closing a whole junction.
