lol could do
Then follow whatever sort of batteries it recommends
or the 26650 (the fatties)
Don't try to do your own diy inverter setup you'll kill someone
i will use off the shelf inverter
Like one made for solar/grid/battery connections in one device
Not a car inverter or anything like that
If you wire up a suicide plug I'll have to shoot you
you should talk to whoever wired the house I'm in now
although they're probably dead already cause I"m pretty sure this house was wired in 1930 and never upgraded
๐ฅ
no grounding anywhere, fusebox, seemingly random polarity
๐ฅ ๐ฅ
and every time I go to do work on anything I find some new and terrible bodge that was installed at some point in time
like the detached garage is wired through the air to my attic with 2 wire romex
and they tapped into the attic lightswitch
so I have to turn on my attic light to get power in the garage
the "ultimate-drawmaster" handle will be freeing up soon
๐ฅ โก ๐ฅ
"it's a shame that nobody saw it coming"
hopefully I get this job tomorrow and I can move out of here
in like 6 months once I can afford down payment on a mortgage
Ugh I hate it when companies who make consumer grade products all of a sudden listen to the customers wants, but then make a product with all the stuff we want and say only a "certified professional" can install it
wat
behold, my most popular photo on google maps

Dear customer your network security is crappy, look how easily I can read license keys off your HP servers. You should pay us megabucks to improve your security
I actually didn't know that was possible, I was flabbergasted
Yeah, that's somewhat surprising
I was trying to make a script to gather iLOs from a customer to check for compliance
And just wanted to test in my lab
Good news, that test just became easy ๐ฌ

u bad bad boy
reminds me, I should configure sendmail to use my protonmail bridge
Oh lawd, I haven't touched sendmail in a few years
๐ฌ
I have a love/hate relationship with Sendmail, and I started with it back in the 90s
Are there better options these days though ?
I just want cron to send me a mail with reports
sendemail is a simple command line tool for it
is the influxdb, telegraf and grafana still kosher on metrics field or is there something mindblowing new out, haven't had a peek for a moment, happy with the existing setup
#analytics-archived would know, but it really depends on what you're doing I suspect
thinking off-topic here, a regular baseline metrics mostly
Hello Guys.. Im looking for a solution to make nice drawings of (48ports big) switches in the field.
Needs to be easy maintainable.. detail view of switch (whats connected to what port) and overview of switches connecting togehter.
What do u uys use, or what are good ideas to explore ?
racktables ๐คฃ
visiocafe + visio
I do drawing of whole DCs with that
And I use fields to tell to and from
that is easily exportable to CSV
for labeling and recabling
Visio mostly for technical drawings yeah, not sure if that works well for port-level documentation, that would be easier extracted from the devices to the version control for further reporting
I do it for port level documentation :p
for hundreds of ports
you can easily change the data for to from ports as needed
Let me see... if I have an example
hmm. im not a fan of visio (understatement) but is visiocafe making everything much better?
It helps with proper stencils
oh yes examples i like ๐
i think visio has a nice giu and the drawings look nice (BPMB. class diags, etc). but the program itself is dumb. visio doesnt know what its drawing
that goers for draw.io/lucidchart/etc. too
How dare you criticise draw.io. It's served me well over the years ๐
Mostly because my employer never pays for any software we ask for...
i use it too when i want to draw something quick.. but its not smartsoft
For something that knows what its drawing there is the graphdot language but the diagrams is produces are not pretty. Can be very useful for drawing system diagrams derived from data though (eg config files etc)
@deft pewter, same here.. did i mention it has to be freeware or easy to trick to freeware? ๐
Easy to trick... yeah, our security team wouldn't go for that ๐
Not to mention there's something like a ยฃ50k fine for each time you're caught doing it.
And I use shape data to define links to and from
that can be extracted to CSV
and edited or used for labeling
hmm, that looks like an option atx
I've done that for years atleast
A drawing like that takes me... 2 hours ish
plus the port labels
let me show what i have now (drawn and maintained in visio for yrs)
The quality of stencils at visiocafe really helps
You're a quality stencil
too bad our nets are restricted AF, I canโt read the ilo numbers ๐ฅฒ
Those drawings are fine for showing off to management, not very good for troubleshooting @paper rose ๐คฃ
i was able to maintain it on A4 for yrs (tried really hard to keep it that way) but growth won
the drawing is for field tecnicians and external support engineers to know wich system to connect when delivering support
but like i said. this is done in visio, and i hav 2 draw everything. i would like to migrate to a tool where i fill data and a drawing gets generated.. so i dont have to fiddle with everything when i add something new
I know what AI/ML is... I don't know how it works... figured today's a good chance to start fixing that.
Machine learning: somebody else wrote a bunch of scripts
The magic is in the model, no?
And the model is a mystery ๐
AI is just algorithms (so someone else's scripts)
We have some pretty cool AI\ML stuff going on now, where all servers phone home, if we notice a critical bug we can patch it on "customers opting in for beta fixes" and if those fix the issue it rolls out in batches to all the other servers WW
Where's the AI/ML in that? That's just scripts ๐
and some other stuff where server + OS + storage is intertwined in analytics, so we can tell that VM1 on host2 on storage3 is saturating the link, so move VM1 to host3 and use storage4
We noticed it didn't crash those other systems, so we'll push out the updates elsewhere...
That's more like it
๐คฃ
That sounds pretty easy too. I'd be more impressed if it could infer the cause of a crash
With the right telemetry... should be possible
Once it gets tricky though you need a human in the loop for the leaps
Yeah. The end goal has to be to get a human brain inside a computer.
I think they've been going about it all wrong. They should literally put a human brain inside a computer.
Lexx managed it ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Lexx... haven't heard of that in years
I used to watch Lexx at night, it aired on the norwegian broadcast indie channel
where tits and other stuff flourished
I have all 4 seasons of Lexx downloaded. Keep meaning to rewatch it.
It was a little... odd. I think Farscape was slightly more accessible.
Both are great
Yeah, Farscape was good - I've got the set here somewhere. I also enjoyed Andromeda, though it set a lot lower bar
And...did it transform your world?
Tease ๐
What's the Coral for? ML?
yo moma
i think im gonna write some C# project to create a list of network objects in a GUI, and then be able to drag some cube into a drawing.. that way i would be able to make changes in the object list an the drawing gets updated.. maybe in a later version i would let the project inform the DHCP server with new plans or something.
So, write for yourself stuff that already exists ๐
the existing stuff was what i was asking.. but we got no further than visio
what do u suggest Tinkerer?
There's enterprise level software for this stuff, but I've not had to touch it in years
now to figure out how to map a PCI device to a docker container ๐ค
just share /dev/something
did do so already a few yrs ago.. mini version of visio.. hehe
This sounds like my kinda talk:
Add your own computer vision model to your application without ML skills
I have no skills. It's perfect for me.
My head is fine ๐ I'm drunk after 1 beer already, lockdown makes getting drunk real easy
I passthrough my encoder on a pi with --device=/dev/vchiq:/dev/vchiq for example, should work with any device I believe but I don't have coral. so ๐คทโโ๏ธ
@clear ferry combine your ML and music interests: https://aws.amazon.com/deepcomposer/?c=ml&sec=srv
I rarely drink, so it only takes a couple for me. I need to drink less and eat better now though... the last year hasn't been kind to my figure.
Ran for the first time in 9 months on Monday. It almost killed me. My pace was about a third slower than it used to be ๐
Running to the pub is healthy ๐
I already make shitty music fine on my own @deft pewter
i work from home for months now.. all gyms closed.. really beatifull results i gives
@the office i walk outide @lunch break. but at home i easily skip breaks.. sometimes do less than 1000 steps a day ๐ฎ
With my current level of fitness, I struggle to run a bath.
Some days I do less than 200 ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Never thought I would say this but I cant wait to get back to the office (though oddly the office will be a new company I got transfered to during lockdown when I eventually am allowed out)
Most of those are to the fridge...
Eh. I hope I never go to my office again. But once I get back in shape, I want to be running 20+ miles a week.
Used to do 3 short runs and 1 long run every week and loved it.
326 steps i my alltime low record. ๐
Usually 3x5km and the long one was anywhere up to 21km.
My old office was in central London and had a subsidised bar on the 5th floor. Loved it.
Did the subsidy outweigh your commuting costs? ๐
I bet. The biggest things for me are the commuting time/cost and the office noise. I've been working so much better this past year - I come in to the 'office' more refreshed and I can focus better.
The team can still reach me if they need me, so it's not like I'm going incognito.
i like the fact that i can sleep till 15mins before work.. and shower later ๐
My department have already starting warning us that we will be going back when the offices re-open. I'd rather leave than be forced to commute again.
I think my Director has heard that I'm applying for jobs. He's booked in a one to one with me tomorrow... he never does one to ones with devs. ๐ค
I used to work 60h weeks, and on call rota at night, but I could also sleep until 10am if I wanted to
these days I work 32 hour weeks, no on call rota, I can still sleep to 10am but I don't because my daughter wakes_ me ๐คฃ
35 hours is enough for me ๐
Maybee he is promoting you and wants to tell you in person ๐
If the promotion comes with a contract that says I can work remotely, I'll accept ๐คทโโ๏ธ
But it's the director that doesn't want our department working remotely...
Gonna be an interesting conversation. There was no context on the invite.
I have already been assigned an EDGE WORKER role, so I am permanent WFH except when I go to customer sites
Which is rare these days
I'm pretty confident it's not my P45, since my line manager would give me that ๐
Now I just want to nag my bosses that I can move back north, and travel by plane to Oslo as needed
Then I'd be happy
Noice
If your remote who cares where you are !
I don't have customers. I have Jira tickets ๐
Can deal with Jira tickets from anywhere... and have been for 12 months already.
ROFL
And if I move to a new job role I'll be working all over northern europe anyway, both WFH and travel
It's nuts. I've been more productive since working remotely and they still don't want it to be permanent. If I don't change jobs, I think I'll just put in a statutory request for change of contract.
i hope i can still remote like 2 days in a week when this is over
Only 2? ๐ฎ
preferably 4
If I have to compromise, I'd be okay with going in once a fortnight for the stupid sprint ceremonies.
yeh, because i still like being around co-workers and handle adhoc situations
People? ๐คข
coworkers
I handle adhoc customers worldwide from home, no need to go to the office ๐คฃ
I get on with my team... but I get on with them just as well remotely. Not like we ever go out drinking together, so face to face isn't important.
i know.. but as a automation engineer i have to maintain my ppl skills also hahaha
I used to think I was socially awkward but I think I'm still one of the higher functioning members of my department, at least within the dev teams ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I don't care about being perfect. I just want to be better than the average ๐
Other people will get their notice before I do...
I can't tell whether that's a good sign for you, or a really bad sign for your department...
(watch me get my notice tomorrow from my director ๐คฃ )
What you trying to say? I have a great personality ๐
I'm pretty sure I'll be the..... last to get a notice, in scandinavia ๐ค
If I'm grumpy on here, it's usually because I've had a long, hard day (and probably shouldn't have signed on at all). I'm quite civil and constructive at work.
im not agreeing with the social engineering of my office coworkers either.. but dealing with them trains my adaptation skills and keep me flexible. if one can work with my colleages.. one can work everywhere hahaha
Are they awkward too? ๐
no.. they are the majority accepted 'normal' haha
I'm currently trying to drill a couple of my own old habits out of our newest junior dev. He's way too proud and doesn't ask for help when he's stuck ๐
He was a few days into a ticket and had been telling our manager that it's all on track. I asked him to talk me through it... he was days behind. Almost zero progress...
Got him back on track though ๐
I'm a strong believer that you never lie to your boss. If you do they can't protect you when you screw up
Doesn't mean I'll be brutally honest though, I've been known to fudge things a bit ๐
Yeah, that's the point I made to him. No-one's gonna come down on a junior for being slow... but it doesn't allow our manager to set the proper expectations with the higher ups.
We're supposed to be wrapping up a big application over the next couple of weeks, so it's important we're honest about what's left and when we'll be free to move on to other features. They don't want to hear on deadline day that there's still 2 weeks of work left ๐
Dear customer, we lied. Sorry about that
๐
What, but companies never lie
The funny bit... we don't even have a bloody customer for this. We've spend 4 months building something for internal use and there's not a product that wants to adopt the service yet.
The product we built it for are now saying it's not what they asked for... ๐ค
That sounds like typical dev/client relationships - ask for something, and then don't work with the devs to ensure you get it
I've had the pleasure of working in a much more ... collaborative ... setup many times, and while it may frustrate the devs at first everybody ends up happier
Oh, they had plenty of chance to work with us. They dodged all the meetings we tried to set up ๐คทโโ๏ธ
once a company told me they fired a guy i had complaints about, never saw that guy again. when i switched to a new company that firm was also connected and sended me that same guy again.. disconnected the company for lieing and connected a new one
I'm working with some devs producing magic for me just now, they know that they can reach out to me any time for feedback, and that I want to get updates any time they make enough progress on anything
It's like... why isn't this obviously the sane way for getting shit done?
But you're one of the very rare managers that actually communicate ๐
a: Thanks for spending 3 months on that, it's crap
b: Yeah, I'm not sure that's going where we want it to go, can we tweak it like this for next week?
I mean, yes, I'm an odd one because I've spent time in many roles and .... talking with people so I can understand how to work more effectively with them
We basically got to the end of the 4 months before they said it didn't fit their processes.
It's nuts. We built it to spec. Our architect had supposedly designed that spec with that product team. Now, they say the spec isn't gonna work for them ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Yeah, I've seen that before, it's one of the reasons I ended up sitting down with a dev one day and going right, so this is how we use that thing, and here's why we hate it
Their boss wasn't happy with me, because I was going "outside the system"
The devs hated me at first, because I was "interfering"
Nah, it's better to keep people in the loop. I'd rather know early that I need to change something than find out at the end after I've done it.
Didn't take long for everybody to appreciate the faster and more relevant feedback
Not just the usual that's crap that devs get, but here's why it doesn't work for us, this is the kind of thing that'd be better for us
This service is going to have a UI in front of it. They're starting to think about what the UX for that UI is (after we've built it...) and coming up with all kinds of suggestions that don't even fit with the architecture we designed. ๐
If we'd known these things at the beginning, it would've been easy to design an architecture that supported it...
Instead, we have a greenfield project that could've been well-architected... and we're already going to have technical debt when we shoehorn other crap in.
And here's me with my dev team going we're going to back this with Git anyway, so how about our first release just uses Git's UI
๐ค Sure.... it gets us off the ground faster
We're used to not working with UI's anyway. We literally build services, which is great cos I hate front-end dev.
If works, can make pretty later
The idea is that a bunch of products around the business for different market segments or different geographical locations were all building really similar stuff their own way. So instead, we build a central service that all products can just integrate with.
Hah. Someone else's job to make it pretty...
Yeah. International business that was quite siloed for a while. Went through massive restructuring a few years back and stuff like this came out of it.
It's hard to get people to change
Even in the UK, there's something like 4/5 different products that use our service and maybe the same again that use other services delivered by other teams in the same dept.
Oh, it was hard, that's for sure. It took a new CEO coming in and firing about 30% of us, mostly in middle management roles ๐คฃ
So, improved efficiency
There was so much duplicated work across the business. Why do we need 10 VP's of software just for different countries?
Yeah. It didn't go down well at the time but we needed it. He trimmed all the fat...
hope he doesnt continue with it once he sees your skinny lockdown ass again heghe ๐
Ah, he's gone now ๐
Our new CEO is pretty likeable too. Still gets the job done but actually has a personality and isn't remembered for being the person that fired everyone.
likeable and personality.. your ceo is pretty advanced in the soft skills.
not ever believed one ceo.. regardles how likeable
Well you'd have to be pretty naive to think they're 100% open and honest when they speak. At that level, a lot of it is politics. But he's usually pretty frank about stuff.
Unfortunately, one thing he's been frank about lately is that the business has no intention to go remote... ๐
So many other tech firms are. Just not us.
its always the external stakeholders and the hidden agenda that comes with it
Not sure about hidden... sometimes you just have to pick up on the double speak.
Like a lot of companies, we're really pushing hard to move to cloud software and subscriptions, instead of your traditional perpetually-licensed desktop crap. Some people that still work on our desktop products seem to think their 5-year roadmaps are worth a shit ๐
They clearly haven't picked up on the fact that our primary financial goal to which all our bonuses and pay rises are tied is annual recurring revenue... so subscriptions ๐
still no reply from IT services about my laptop replacement
Their products are gonna be shuttered soon and they're blind to it.

im waiting for IT to allow me vlan adapters connected to internet.. gonna be good shit developed than ๐
Another talk written for a totally unskilled person like me:
Build your own defect and anomaly detection models without ML skills
This could actually be useful. Anomaly detection would be great... we miss stuff on production ๐
OMG. TEH BETAH DAY ๐
betah ๐คข
Time to upgrade to 2020.02 then...
2020?
Yeah, it was a special release. Only mods and volunteers got it.
2525.man.is.still.alive
2021... I'll remember the right year by the time December arrives
You don't need to remember what year it is. At your age, I'm surprised you know what day of the week it is.
Martha, is that you ?
I wish I had a pack of raw bacon right now
I'm salivating just thinking of it
It's amazing how many people manage that ๐ค
Really impressive how 'little' it takes to send a car airborne.
That's a couple of tons of metal just floating along ๐
Better up than in
Wonder if I can pass /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:03:00.0/ to a container
it isn't a /dev
Well, you're mapping a thing so .... maybe
But would that be a volume mapping or a device mapping ๐ค
atx, atx atx! It's here!
Well, a folder would be a volume, possibly
that is the coral btw
depends if the driver hooks onto the device at host level... or not
I can't install the driver, because this is on my truenas box, whatever I install via apt gets wiped on a reboot ๐คฃ
Aws control tower is hot garbage
@deft pewter joining the Yubikey club?
then you need /sys and have the driver ready in container, but I think in case for docker you need the driver initialized at host level (no kernel support = no support overall), which makes it different to a VM - you can passthrough devices at /sys no problem
My 5c YubiKey arrived last week, it's damned nice
5C here too. I only plan to use it with the MBP to avoid all the crappy 2FA and SSO nonsense.
If I want to use it with my PC, I have a USB-C to USB-A adaptor.
Almost everything I use regularly has USB-C - USB-A is the harder thing to find ๐
And, I still have two USB-A YubiKeys anyway ๐
Primary, backup, backup of the backup ๐ค
Yeah, always a good idea to have a backup authenticator
Interestingly a lot of sites support the fingerprint reader on my laptop for 2FA now
I have to cancel the use of that to allow them to use the YubiKey ๐
I'll have to make it play then
Even my 5yo laptop has usb-c @subtle pasture
three of them none the less
My desktop has one USB-C port, phone has one, laptop has zero
my chromebook has two
Just download more ports.
USB-C hub ๐
It really just hasn't taken off here, aside from mobile device chargers / power supplies
When buying my current laptop one of the key requirements was for it to be powered over USB-C
And all our phones support Qi charging, so even USB-C for charging doesn't get used super often
I've turned down faster work laptops because they'd require non-USB-C power
murica, still relying on landlines and sattelite internet, doesn't surprise me @subtle pasture ๐คฃ
@clear ferry Nah, more like we solved the charging thing years ago when Qi became a thing ๐
QI never took off here
It did here, then it stalled, and it's started coming back
I still have a set of Qi chargers, including one with the magnetic mounts for my old Nexus phone and tablet ๐
It's pretty awesome that I can still use the Qi phone charger that came with my Lumia 920 (from 2012) on my LG v35
My work phone sits on a Qi charger when not in use
I had it on my palm in 2010, a friend had it on his nokia in 2012, and my wife just gave up on it, I know noone who uses it outside of cars tbh
Azure SSO and GitHub set up with the Yubikey. No more TOTP for work stuff ๐
You want to talk about reducing waste, Qi is kinda the answer, in spite of the inefficiency
Because I'm going to be using that charger from 2012 until it up and dies, at this point...
I gave away my palm chargers, they were nice
Surely the longer you keep it, the more the inefficiency matters?
I get that you haven't had other cables/chargers in that time... but that would also be true if you had the same wired charger for that whole time ๐
@deft pewter Potentially, though our house is solar, so...
It's hard to deal with plastic waste, but I can always get more power from the sun
I might invest in solar if I buy a new house
But you were already responsible for additional plastic waste by purchasing an aftermarket charger ๐คทโโ๏ธ
only $14k to cover half a roof
Good luck keeping the same wired charger for the same duration. That would require, at the very least, multiple cable purchases
Because USB cables just... don't last
I should buy a boat ๐ค
I dunno. My cables seem to last just fine. The flaw is if you bend the ends too much, which I don't...
and get repurposed
@deft pewter I didn't purchase an aftermarket charger, my Lumia 920 came with its own Nokia branded Qi charging plate ๐
I did purchase a Tylt Vu Qi charger for my desk at work, though
But, again, I'll be using that... basically forever
You're lucky. I've noticed MicroUSB cables tend to just... fall apart on a regular basis
Those Apple cables are the worst, even with the strain relief they started to include.
I've seen insulation shred, cable boots come apart, connectors snap off, cable pulling out of the boot, etc.
What kind of factory rejects do they sell you in the States? ๐ฎ
We only get the stuff that passes quality control this side of the pond ๐
Animals !!! I NEVER had a usb cable fail!
It's usually the cheap shit they include with phones that has issues, tbh
All of my Anker branded USB cables are fine
All of my "regularly used" cables are from aliexpress, the factory cables get relegated to static charger points around the house for static devices
Oh, and if you want to bring "inefficiency in power-delivery" into it, a lot of USB cables are so low quality that there's pretty severe loss over the cable itself...
Which is another thing you don't have to worry about Qi. At least it's consistent >_>
How do those inefficiencies compare though?
Like... if I knew the cable might lose 10%, that's acceptable.
Thats a LOT on a eg 2m cable !!
@deft pewter I've had cables so bad that they literal can't get a Raspberry Pi to boot reliably (v-droop of more than 0.8v)
Same power supply, different cable, suddenly getting 5.2v at the end...
No, dude... that's a pretty awful cable
Good enough to power your production servers though
When you shove 5.2+v in one side, and get 4v out the other, that's some shit <_<
At least that's what a lot of HA OS users think ๐
Fun fact: the higher voltages employed by QuickCharge are, in part, to get around cable losses from cheap cables
9v and 12v hold up a lot better than 5v
0.8 v at 2.4A... that's about a meter of AWG30, I think.
American Wire Gauge ๐คข
Hello Guys, Any idea/trick how to get this Item from Amazon without shipping fee? ๐ It costs 71.99$, but for shipping to mee its about 115$. https://www.amazon.com/Govee-Backlights-Ambient-Assistant-Control/dp/B08LVPWQQP
never used or heard of Qi here, we just do Quality Control
Tricks? Shop around.
Qi is a trademark for wireless charging ๐
Qi (pronounced CHEE; from the Chinese word qi; traditional Chinese: ๆฐฃ) is an open interface standard that defines wireless power transfer using inductive charging over distances of up to 4 cm (1.6 inches), developed by the Wireless Power Consortium. The system uses a charging pad and a compatible device, which is placed on top of the pad, charg...
And I would not have known to pronounce it like that from the spelling ๐ค
must be a android thing, this usbc everyone talks about
๐คฃ
Heh, I'm surprised, a lot of phones just include it these days (even the nicer iPhones have it)
My iPhone has it but most people I know would not use that term and just call it "Wireless charging"
cable > wireless any day
I mean, probably because the other two competing wireless charging standards are basically dead now
Qi won the format war. lol
WOW - Who thought electricity had a "format" ๐
@noble pivot Wireless power requires that the transmitter and receiver match, so there were a few competing standards
Duracell had their own, oddly enough
pff just use induction plates and cook that shiat
Wireless charging is great, saves me easily 10 secods a day ๐
Sasmsung used to have it standard, but they stopped doing it at some point except for the top models I think
@clear ferry I know there was an entire generation of phones that skipped Qi and NFC support because metal backs were all the rage
And neither Qi or NFC works through metal >_>
LG were like the only OEM who still supported it during that time, because they did quirky plastic / wood / stamped leather backs.
I went for a consumer mid range samsung last time now, I'll be going back to Huawei next time for sure
My P20Pro still has 10x better camera than most other phones on the market that isn't $1500+
Yeaaah, I don't get along with Samsung phones
And super snappy
I almost got a Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro for my last phone, but went LG again because I really needed WiFi calling to work, and that wasn't going to happen with the Xiaomi on AT&T
Oh right, your strange vendor lockins
Yup... AT&T requires approved phones running an approved ROM to enable WiFi calling
Or you can port your number to Google Voice or Skype, I suppose
Call on WiFi all you like, from any device.
Yeah, we just call over wifi, anywhere in europe
google voice is only US afaik
I remember having to buy Skype minutes to call in sick to work, because cell reception for AT&T is so poor inside my house
"Fuck this, next phone will have WiFi calling support"
What was even shittier was, the phone I had at the time DID support WiFi calling
But only on T-Mobile...
Y'all murica
Yeah, no argument there, our ISPs and cell providers blow
With teeth
and drymouth
I was shocked when I first saw "Wifi" as my Provider on ios
vote for organization https://community.home-assistant.io/t/automation-script-folders/165415
Hey! Something that I think could be useful is being able to organize your Automations/Scripts in folders. For example I have a couple Automations that gets triggered when I get home. I would love to keep these Automations in folders to have a easier way to look through them instead of having them in a list with all other automations. Thanks!
organization !
HA talk? Take that crap elsewhere ๐
HA support goes elsewhere, we can shitpost about HA here ๐
I don't care about the UI. I can see my folder structure ๐คทโโ๏ธ
That's not shitposting... that's someone asking for help voting a feature request up... so that it can receive support.
And yeah, folders would be great. As-is, all of my automations have absurdly long names because I prefix them with what would ideally be the name of the folder they'd go in.
Funny that a feature request can be open for over a year and still only have 19 votes. Can't be that important ๐คทโโ๏ธ
You heard mono, commence shitposting about how much the UI sucks ๐
UI SUCKS
UI's good ๐คทโโ๏ธ
It's just not the most efficient way to work...
Nope, must shitpost. Sucks ๐
Like people who buy Unifi to manage networking graphically
so u yaml organise automations ๐ฆ
@clear ferry I cant fucking stand Unifi...
Nope, I'm all Cisco and Aruba over here
UNIFIWEGIAN
I bonk people over in the homelab discord for their shitty unifi setups all the time
All Cisco switches, all Aruba access points
cisco...God forbid
Hey, their shit works, and I didn't need to buy a $150 dongle (that has zero redundancy) to manage them
The number of dead CloudKeys I've had to deal with... augh...
"Sorry, your entire network config is gone. It'll keep working for now, but to make any changes, we'll have to re-do the entire thing from scratch"
roflcopter
You are, quite literally, better off running Unifi off of a Raspberry Pi than you are using the official CloudKey
because then you at least get the option of A) multiple units for redundancy, and B) running from reliable SSD storage
but those same users will run unifi on a raspberry pi with the cloudkey and sd boot on the pi
and run 25 addons via HA Supervised
Most of the issues I see with CloudKeys are because of corrupt storage. They basically run from MicroSD
becauSE I'M a PRoSumER
"Unplugged the switch that the single, non-redundant CloudKey was getting PoE from? Hope your storage didn't eat itself..."
@clear ferry Yeah, it became pretty obvious that Ubiquiti was shooting for home users when they put OLED screens on all of their switches...
because literally nobody in SMB or enterprise will be managing these switches whle physically standing in front of them, poking at a tiny OLED screen
Surprised the switches didn't have RGB watercooling too
I'd rather the switches not include the OLED screen and supporting components, and be cheaper...
You know, like normal managed network switches >_>
Most of the unifi users seems like they should be buying tplink unmanaged switches anyway
..
hey guys, I've distributed my IOT devices over 25 subnets and 21 VLANs, but I can't seem to get google cast to work
my mom gets so angry when it doesn't work
To be fair, I can't get Google Cast to work reliably even on flat networks
I haven't had a single issue
for over 2 years
both with Google mini \ hub and Ikea Symfonisk, plus my AVR and TVs
I have an Nvidia Shield and a Roku on my network right now
Just tried to cast, aaaand... "no devices found, would you like to link with a code?"
Code always works, but it means having to have the endpoint generate a cast code
yeah, I've never used it on my roku, no idea how that works
and I've never met a person with a shield irl
๐คฃ
The Nvidia Shield has a Chromecast built in
So should behave similar to my AVR
Like, letting it go to screensaver literally shows the Chromecast slideshow idle UI
Yeah, well, for whatever reason, can't discover it
It's on the same wifi network as my phone right now, and it doesn't pop up in the list of things I can cast to
But if I use a code to connect to it, it casts perfectly... so the two devices CAN talk
auto-discovery is just pants
Heh, just checked. Not only are they on the same SSID, they're connected to the same WAP, and it's still not discovering. Fun...
Is it pure chromecast or is it some
Because like my onkyo I can read the Chromecast version on it
Pretty much pure Chromecast. The Nvidia Shield runs Android TV
while my LG tv supports cast... it does appear to be something they made in a frankensteinlab
It might be running miracast or something
So that's weird... tried from a browser, didn't work there either
Used the bathroom, came back, tried from the same browser window, and suddenly it can see the Shield TV
Phone still can't find it... and now the browser is back to not finding it
Just seems like auto-discovery is a shitshow for Chromecast devices
No issues here
Both on my old MSM466 and my newer Linksys Velop bridged mesh stuff
Sounds like mdns issues for you
Except there shouldn't be any mdns issues if both the sending and receiving device are on a flat network together...
And why the fuck would it work sometimes, but not others, at random? lol
some APs do client isolation etc
Yeah, not for this SSID
I'm well aware of how my WAPs are configured ๐
Time to dive into Aruba's virtual controller and see how airgroups are configured, I guess...
Chromecast uses the DIAL protocol: http://www.dial-multiscreen.org/ for discovery and launch.
Dial-multiscreen.org - a specification for multiscreen "DI"scovery "A"nd "L"aunch of first-screen (TV) content apps.
Chromecast doesn't use mDNS, so it's not an mDNS issue. lol
I was sure they used mDNS
A DIAL client that wishes to discover DIAL servers shall send an M-SEARCH request as defined in Section 1.3.2 of [1] over UDP to the IPv4 multicast address 239.255.255.250 and UDP port 1900.
nice that the first 10 hits on google for chromecast and mdns are unifi users having issues with their seCURe netWorkS
its all just broadcast talky
lol, they're gonna have a bad time if they're trying to troubleshoot mDNS configuration ๐
Since my Zbook g3 died, I want a Zbook G7 Firefly
only 1.4kgs with 64GB RAM and 10th gen i7
Lol, well, i got the Roku to be reliably discoverable, but the Shield is still MIA
This is after changing Aruba's configuration from "blindly pass discovery traffic" to "proxy discovery traffic"
Usually, the former would "just work" since it passes everything... not sure why having the IAP act as a proxy helps the Roku
What's also weird is that HomeAssistant has has no trouble detecting all of my ChromeCast devices at any time, but Android phones and Chrome browsers have all kinds of issues...
but the HA is cabled
So is my desktop PC running Chrome
Which has once again decided to show something, randomly
That's the weird part, it's intermittent...
I wonder what Slave Bedroom Roku will play
Sometimes it'll discover everything, sometimes just the Roku, sometimes nothing
starts casting to the Shield while it's still visible in the list
TV clicks on in the living room
Why can't you work like that ALL the time? <_<
Just replace the shield with an inferior streaming platform
may i present to you: KODI
Kodi ๐คข
And I'm keeping the shield. That thing has been amazing overall
but can your network properly route broadcast messages is the next question then
Seems to work fine otherwise, yeah
[X] Doubt
DHCP, LLDP, and CDP are all working fine, and are all broadcast traffic
I can automatically generate full network maps with the last two, which is fun
have you tried turning it off and on again?
@clear ferry Yeah, tell VMWare to support LLDP already ๐
Their vswitches support CDP only
any layer2 vpns with latencies?
Which is fine for anything using a distributed vswitch, though their utility is... limited
Gotta love trying to get back into your cluster after networking goes down with management on a dvSwitch...
Seriously though, I've had to recover a cluster from that exact situation before. Wasn't fun
dvSwitches require vCenter be accessible to configure, but if the current dvswitch config makes it impossible to access vCenter... you're slightly fucked
But in seriousness, 99% of stuff I implement use svswitch on management through redundant paths (either via SR-IOV or dedicated 1\10G links) and everythings else passes dvSwitches, don't care much for the LLDP of the management tbh, that is seperate infrastructure
The hosts will happily run the last dvSwitch config they were able to retrieve from vCenter, but you're still locked out
I always keep a standard vSwitch enabled for management purposes, but this (of course) requires additional physical ports on the servers and switches
tplink ๐คข
tp link is US, isn't it? BE PROUD OF IT FFS
The last tp-link product I purchased had some pretty severe bugs that they never bothered to patch... they just released a whole new hardware revision and told everyone to buy it or kick rocks
They can get fucked. lol
I haven't touched TP-link since... 2004\5 ish
They could fix the older revisions with a firmware update, they just... won't...
Maybe one day I'll dust off the old EAP 245 and convert it to OpenWRT so it's actually usable
do it. openwrt is great
I don't really have a need for it right now, I swapped to Aruba WAPs
Also, there's no official build of OpenWRT for the EAP 245, so support is... sketchy
tp-link couldn't even get their uboot configuration right, so you need a custom version of OpenWRT that works around their shitty uboot.
don't you dare talking badly about my US products ๐คฌ
Useless Shit?
so we talk hyperv now?
I think it was cloud related
Sounds like Babu nasa
One for the AWS nerds. Ever wanted to know how much memory to allocate to a lambda function to get the best speed or cost per run? https://github.com/alexcasalboni/aws-lambda-power-tuning
We always cheat and just give it the most we can, since more memory also means more CPU cycles (weird ass system but never mind...).
Good to see there's a way to identify the sweet spot.
Is today Beta release day?

Hard to go wrong with cookies.

If I thought I could make ice cream, I'd be tempted to make cookie dough ice cream.
looks like ninjabenji went to Lidl ๐
I have never seen Weiswurst in Lidl, other wise I wold go there a LOT.
Dunno, all their products seem to start with W-this W-that
Last time I had to get them DHL'd to me in the post with icepacks due to all the shops being close in lockdown!!
@deft pewter How far is it to you from Surrey, not sure if I can make it in 20 mins
Weisswurst sounds delicious. I haven't tried many wurst warieties.
Hah. About a 4-5 hour drive ๐
Seems our Lidl has had those as some special offers, learned to type it too but already forgot the ascii code for that.. Weiรwurst
I think you might have eaten them all by then ๐ฆ
Chances are high
Only reason I'm not having more than one right now is we haven't had dinner yet. I'll have a few more later ๐
Made two dozen. They'll only last a few days.
Not gonna say if that's because they go stale after that or because I'm a greedy bastard.
@clear ferry want a cookie?
I'd just blame the kids/misus
I can't easily blame your family, what with being all the way in Surrey.

you eat some cables, didn't you?

Nope
Definately didn't steal any network cables

By coincidence
I just read that they transport a whole transatlantic cable on one ship
Well they clearly need to put it back
that is a lot of copper
Because reddit is down
Lots of amplifiers too
What's that? I can't hear you.

it was a little over 16 tons in our media
Yeah, that's after the first reporters took their share.
small quantity, pff
Wait until the investigators do their thing, there'll only be 11 tons.
And by the time it reaches the evidence locker, 6 tons...

Not allowed spice in here.
To benefit from using Bazarr to fetch subs, am I supposed to run all my media stuff off the same machine that hosts Bazarr or is there an easy way to get it to grab subs for stuff on another machine?
I guess I'm going with the Windows service instead of the Docker container on my server ๐ฆ
subs....submissive ?
Subtitles ๐
I'm a numpty, I can't figure out how to configure Bazarr ๐
u read the docs as some tinkering person would say? :))))))))))))
I have the docs open ๐
It talks about mapping folders but doesn't say why or at what level.
And it finds the folders that contain my shows... but tells me there are no episodes ๐
oh...nice doc
Progress. It's working out which movies don't have subtitles. Still says I have no TV episodes ๐
Found them. All of this work just so I don't have to manually download subtitles for one show ๐
20 minutes of work to automate a 2 minute task ๐
but for the future u will become profitable
not lose 2 minutes/episode

There are only 6 episodes for this show ๐
But yes... in the future, I will save more time.
1300 TV episodes and 160 movies 'wanted' in Bazarr right now. It'll catch up...
Plex is still hot garbage at subtitles though
I rarely use subs. I always listen to the audio and don't often watch non-English stuff.
Ah, I don't often use Plex. I watch on my PC with PotPlayer.
no torrents?
No, that would be illegal... ๐คญ
Well... depends on your local laws ๐
potplayer sounds umm british
In the UK, the crime is to share copyrighted material, not to download it.
So... leech torrents and never seed them ๐คทโโ๏ธ

it was between the service providers (ie. ISPs) and copyright representatives.. ie. they first sold service with unlimited storage time (only space limit) and then some turd reps got it through, few years back
So how do they check what the content is? If you upload a personal movie versus a recording of a concert?

Unplugged: Ubuntu Emergency Mode.
Plugged In: Normal Boot.
I'm not even sure how to go about fixing that.
Read the topics please. There's no support in here.
I'd recommend going to the installation channel for your installation type.
i guess ubuntu is not even supported ๐
Apologies, I was hoping to get some pointers since this is (I hope) not a HA-issue.
if is ubuntu issue...then....their discord
I'm only on Discord for HA. You mean I have to venture .. beyond?
There are many Discord servers. Soon you'll have a collection.
The Truth Is Out There
But I don't think there's one specifically for Ubuntu

I work at integrating 2 systems with each other atm, the first I can access with c# and sql and calculate passwords for domains and the other one is a finished security product with a supposedly REST api...

Trying to figure out where I should place the release of this entirely self-contained chat client in my list of priorities. Is this interesting to anyone? All local, no cloud chat.
Survives reboots and upgrades.
Would this be something you might install to check out?
I thought there was already some kind of chat addon or integration for HA? Still confused what purpose it would be used for.
Messages among the users. Notes on install. Personal logs. General chat across the house/network.
just can't picture that many people in the same household using it in the extent to needing a messaging program built in
Yeah. Luckily it was easy to make. I used to use https://chat.adamoutler.com?room=Home Assistant to crowd-source tech support on web apps previously. It's not a priority to release unless it's interesting to people.
There should be a recommendation channel for this Discord
I am looking for a recommendation for a short color changing LED strip with connection to HA. Thoughts?
that's #hardware-archived

I got rejected by like 4 companies during my searching
And ended up getting hand picked for a way better company
It's like the golden snitch in Harry Potter
Feels good, man.
Got my current role because I was bored of my last one and handed in my notice. My boss's boss heard and did some job hunting on my behalf and set up a transfer for the role I'm in now, which is way better.

Me: I value my personal time and don't want to commute again
Him: ok, bye
Or:
Him: why are you leaving?
Me: I value my personal time and don't want to commute again
Him: well we won't want to lose you, here's a remote contract
And it's basically a coin toss. I have no idea which way I think it'll go ๐

why u want to work remotely ?
Our annual reviews are scored, with bonuses and pay rises being tied to that score... I always hit the top band. Personally, I think he'd be a fool to let me go... but that's his choice, not mine.

- I hate office noise and can't concentrate
