visiocafe + visio

I do drawing of whole DCs with that

#

And I use fields to tell to and from

that is easily exportable to CSV

#

for labeling and recabling

lapis cipher
#

Visio mostly for technical drawings yeah, not sure if that works well for port-level documentation, that would be easier extracted from the devices to the version control for further reporting

clear ferry

I do it for port level documentation :p

for hundreds of ports

#

you can easily change the data for to from ports as needed

Let me see... if I have an example

paper rose

i think visio has a nice giu and the drawings look nice (BPMB. class diags, etc). but the program itself is dumb. visio doesnt know what its drawing

#

Mostly because my employer never pays for any software we ask for...

paper rose

i use it too when i want to draw something quick.. but its not smartsoft

For something that knows what its drawing there is the graphdot language but the diagrams is produces are not pretty. Can be very useful for drawing system diagrams derived from data though (eg config files etc)

that can be extracted to CSV

I've done that for years atleast

A drawing like that takes me... 2 hours ish

I know what AI/ML is... I don't know how it works... figured today's a good chance to start fixing that.

clever mortar
#

Machine learning: somebody else wrote a bunch of scripts

deft pewter
#

The magic is in the model, no?

#

And the model is a mystery ๐Ÿ˜„

#

AI is just algorithms (so someone else's scripts)

clear ferry
#

We have some pretty cool AI\ML stuff going on now, where all servers phone home, if we notice a critical bug we can patch it on "customers opting in for beta fixes" and if those fix the issue it rolls out in batches to all the other servers WW

deft pewter
#

Where's the AI/ML in that? That's just scripts ๐Ÿ˜„

clear ferry
#

and some other stuff where server + OS + storage is intertwined in analytics, so we can tell that VM1 on host2 on storage3 is saturating the link, so move VM1 to host3 and use storage4

#

Saving a fortune on train fare at the mo!

deft pewter

I bet. The biggest things for me are the commuting time/cost and the office noise. I've been working so much better this past year - I come in to the 'office' more refreshed and I can focus better.

And if I move to a new job role I'll be working all over northern europe anyway, both WFH and travel

It's nuts. I've been more productive since working remotely and they still don't want it to be permanent. If I don't change jobs, I think I'll just put in a statutory request for change of contract.

deft pewter
#

Are they awkward too? ๐Ÿ˜‰

paper rose
#

no.. they are the majority accepted 'normal' haha

deft pewter
#

I'm currently trying to drill a couple of my own old habits out of our newest junior dev. He's way too proud and doesn't ask for help when he's stuck ๐Ÿ˜‚

deft pewter
#

He was a few days into a ticket and had been telling our manager that it's all on track. I asked him to talk me through it... he was days behind. Almost zero progress...

#

Got him back on track though ๐ŸŽ‰

clever mortar
#

I'm a strong believer that you never lie to your boss. If you do they can't protect you when you screw up

#

Doesn't mean I'll be brutally honest though, I've been known to fudge things a bit ๐Ÿ˜„

deft pewter
#

Yeah, that's the point I made to him. No-one's gonna come down on a junior for being slow... but it doesn't allow our manager to set the proper expectations with the higher ups.

#

We're supposed to be wrapping up a big application over the next couple of weeks, so it's important we're honest about what's left and when we'll be free to move on to other features. They don't want to hear on deadline day that there's still 2 weeks of work left ๐Ÿ˜‚

clever mortar
#

Dear customer, we lied. Sorry about that

deft pewter
#

๐Ÿ˜‚

clear ferry
#

What, but companies never lie

deft pewter
#

The funny bit... we don't even have a bloody customer for this. We've spend 4 months building something for internal use and there's not a product that wants to adopt the service yet.

#

The product we built it for are now saying it's not what they asked for... ๐Ÿค”

clever mortar
#

That sounds like typical dev/client relationships - ask for something, and then don't work with the devs to ensure you get it

#

I've had the pleasure of working in a much more ... collaborative ... setup many times, and while it may frustrate the devs at first everybody ends up happier

deft pewter
#

Oh, they had plenty of chance to work with us. They dodged all the meetings we tried to set up ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

paper rose
# clear ferry What, but companies never lie

once a company told me they fired a guy i had complaints about, never saw that guy again. when i switched to a new company that firm was also connected and sended me that same guy again.. disconnected the company for lieing and connected a new one

clever mortar
#

It's like... why isn't this obviously the sane way for getting shit done?

deft pewter
#

But you're one of the very rare managers that actually communicate ๐Ÿ˜„

clever mortar
#

a: Thanks for spending 3 months on that, it's crap
b: Yeah, I'm not sure that's going where we want it to go, can we tweak it like this for next week?

#

I mean, yes, I'm an odd one because I've spent time in many roles and .... talking with people so I can understand how to work more effectively with them

deft pewter
#

We basically got to the end of the 4 months before they said it didn't fit their processes.

#

It's nuts. We built it to spec. Our architect had supposedly designed that spec with that product team. Now, they say the spec isn't gonna work for them ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I've seen that before, it's one of the reasons I ended up sitting down with a dev one day and going right, so this is how we use that thing, and here's why we hate it

#

Their boss wasn't happy with me, because I was going "outside the system"

#

The devs hated me at first, because I was "interfering"

deft pewter
#

Nah, it's better to keep people in the loop. I'd rather know early that I need to change something than find out at the end after I've done it.

clever mortar
#

Didn't take long for everybody to appreciate the faster and more relevant feedback

#

Not just the usual that's crap that devs get, but here's why it doesn't work for us, this is the kind of thing that'd be better for us

deft pewter
#

This service is going to have a UI in front of it. They're starting to think about what the UX for that UI is (after we've built it...) and coming up with all kinds of suggestions that don't even fit with the architecture we designed. ๐Ÿ˜

#

If we'd known these things at the beginning, it would've been easy to design an architecture that supported it...

#

Instead, we have a greenfield project that could've been well-architected... and we're already going to have technical debt when we shoehorn other crap in.

clever mortar
#

And here's me with my dev team going we're going to back this with Git anyway, so how about our first release just uses Git's UI

#

๐Ÿค” Sure.... it gets us off the ground faster

deft pewter
#

We're used to not working with UI's anyway. We literally build services, which is great cos I hate front-end dev.

clever mortar
#

If works, can make pretty later

deft pewter
#

The idea is that a bunch of products around the business for different market segments or different geographical locations were all building really similar stuff their own way. So instead, we build a central service that all products can just integrate with.

#

Hah. Someone else's job to make it pretty...

#

Yeah. International business that was quite siloed for a while. Went through massive restructuring a few years back and stuff like this came out of it.

clever mortar
#

It's hard to get people to change

deft pewter
#

Even in the UK, there's something like 4/5 different products that use our service and maybe the same again that use other services delivered by other teams in the same dept.

#

Oh, it was hard, that's for sure. It took a new CEO coming in and firing about 30% of us, mostly in middle management roles ๐Ÿคฃ

clever mortar
#

So, improved efficiency

deft pewter
#

There was so much duplicated work across the business. Why do we need 10 VP's of software just for different countries?

#

Yeah. It didn't go down well at the time but we needed it. He trimmed all the fat...

paper rose
deft pewter
#

Ah, he's gone now ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

Our new CEO is pretty likeable too. Still gets the job done but actually has a personality and isn't remembered for being the person that fired everyone.

paper rose
#

likeable and personality.. your ceo is pretty advanced in the soft skills.

#

not ever believed one ceo.. regardles how likeable

deft pewter
#

Well you'd have to be pretty naive to think they're 100% open and honest when they speak. At that level, a lot of it is politics. But he's usually pretty frank about stuff.

#

Unfortunately, one thing he's been frank about lately is that the business has no intention to go remote... ๐Ÿ˜

#

So many other tech firms are. Just not us.

I still have a set of Qi chargers, including one with the magnetic mounts for my old Nexus phone and tablet ๐Ÿ˜„

It's pretty awesome that I can still use the Qi phone charger that came with my Lumia 920 (from 2012) on my LG v35

clever mortar
#

My work phone sits on a Qi charger when not in use

I had it on my palm in 2010, a friend had it on his nokia in 2012, and my wife just gave up on it, I know noone who uses it outside of cars tbh

You want to talk about reducing waste, Qi is kinda the answer, in spite of the inefficiency

Because I'm going to be using that charger from 2012 until it up and dies, at this point...

clear ferry
#

I gave away my palm chargers, they were nice

deft pewter
#

Surely the longer you keep it, the more the inefficiency matters?

#

I get that you haven't had other cables/chargers in that time... but that would also be true if you had the same wired charger for that whole time ๐Ÿ˜‰

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter Potentially, though our house is solar, so...

clear ferry
subtle pasture
#

It's hard to deal with plastic waste, but I can always get more power from the sun

I might invest in solar if I buy a new house

noble pivot

Animals !!! I NEVER had a usb cable fail!

subtle pasture

It's usually the cheap shit they include with phones that has issues, tbh

#

All of my Anker branded USB cables are fine

clear ferry
#

All of my "regularly used" cables are from aliexpress, the factory cables get relegated to static charger points around the house for static devices

subtle pasture
#

Oh, and if you want to bring "inefficiency in power-delivery" into it, a lot of USB cables are so low quality that there's pretty severe loss over the cable itself...

#

Which is another thing you don't have to worry about Qi. At least it's consistent >_>

deft pewter
#

How do those inefficiencies compare though?

#

Like... if I knew the cable might lose 10%, that's acceptable.

noble pivot
subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter I've had cables so bad that they literal can't get a Raspberry Pi to boot reliably (v-droop of more than 0.8v)

Same power supply, different cable, suddenly getting 5.2v at the end...

clear ferry

so, regular rpi power then ?

๐Ÿ˜„

No, dude... that's a pretty awful cable

deft pewter

Good enough to power your production servers though smart

subtle pasture

When you shove 5.2+v in one side, and get 4v out the other, that's some shit <_<

deft pewter

At least that's what a lot of HA OS users think ๐Ÿ˜‚

Fun fact: the higher voltages employed by QuickCharge are, in part, to get around cable losses from cheap cables

@clear ferry I know there was an entire generation of phones that skipped Qi and NFC support because metal backs were all the rage

You are, quite literally, better off running Unifi off of a Raspberry Pi than you are using the official CloudKey

clear ferry
#

but those same users will run unifi on a raspberry pi with the cloudkey and sd boot on the pi

Most of the issues I see with CloudKeys are because of corrupt storage. They basically run from MicroSD

I'd rather the switches not include the OLED screen and supporting components, and be cheaper...

subtle pasture
#

I have an Nvidia Shield and a Roku on my network right now

#

Just tried to cast, aaaand... "no devices found, would you like to link with a code?"

#

Code always works, but it means having to have the endpoint generate a cast code

clear ferry
#

yeah, I've never used it on my roku, no idea how that works

#

and I've never met a person with a shield irl

#

๐Ÿคฃ

subtle pasture
#

The Nvidia Shield has a Chromecast built in

clear ferry
#

So should behave similar to my AVR

subtle pasture
#

Like, letting it go to screensaver literally shows the Chromecast slideshow idle UI

clear ferry
#

which just works

#

Onkyo shizzle my nizzle

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, well, for whatever reason, can't discover it

#

It's on the same wifi network as my phone right now, and it doesn't pop up in the list of things I can cast to

#

But if I use a code to connect to it, it casts perfectly... so the two devices CAN talk

#

auto-discovery is just pants

#

Heh, just checked. Not only are they on the same SSID, they're connected to the same WAP, and it's still not discovering. Fun...

clear ferry
#

Is it pure chromecast or is it some Magic

#

Because like my onkyo I can read the Chromecast version on it

subtle pasture
#

Pretty much pure Chromecast. The Nvidia Shield runs Android TV

clear ferry
#

while my LG tv supports cast... it does appear to be something they made in a frankensteinlab

#

It might be running miracast or something

subtle pasture
#

So that's weird... tried from a browser, didn't work there either

#

Used the bathroom, came back, tried from the same browser window, and suddenly it can see the Shield TV

#

Phone still can't find it... and now the browser is back to not finding it

#

Just seems like auto-discovery is a shitshow for Chromecast devices

clear ferry
#

No issues here

#

Both on my old MSM466 and my newer Linksys Velop bridged mesh stuff

#

Sounds like mdns issues for you

Lol, well, i got the Roku to be reliably discoverable, but the Shield is still MIA

#

This is after changing Aruba's configuration from "blindly pass discovery traffic" to "proxy discovery traffic"

#

Usually, the former would "just work" since it passes everything... not sure why having the IAP act as a proxy helps the Roku

#

What's also weird is that HomeAssistant has has no trouble detecting all of my ChromeCast devices at any time, but Android phones and Chrome browsers have all kinds of issues...

clear ferry
#

but the HA is cabled

subtle pasture
#

So is my desktop PC running Chrome

clear ferry

LLDP has been supported for years

Gotta love trying to get back into your cluster after networking goes down with management on a dvSwitch...

clear ferry

Just don't let networking go down ๐Ÿคฃ

#

CISCO GOES PU_ppShitDriver

subtle pasture
#

Seriously though, I've had to recover a cluster from that exact situation before. Wasn't fun

#

dvSwitches require vCenter be accessible to configure, but if the current dvswitch config makes it impossible to access vCenter... you're slightly fucked

clear ferry
#

But in seriousness, 99% of stuff I implement use svswitch on management through redundant paths (either via SR-IOV or dedicated 1\10G links) and everythings else passes dvSwitches, don't care much for the LLDP of the management tbh, that is seperate infrastructure

subtle pasture
#

The hosts will happily run the last dvSwitch config they were able to retrieve from vCenter, but you're still locked out

I always keep a standard vSwitch enabled for management purposes, but this (of course) requires additional physical ports on the servers and switches

subtle pasture

dusky plank

do it. openwrt is great

subtle pasture
#

I don't really have a need for it right now, I swapped to Aruba WAPs

#

Also, there's no official build of OpenWRT for the EAP 245, so support is... sketchy

tp-link couldn't even get their uboot configuration right, so you need a custom version of OpenWRT that works around their shitty uboot.

To benefit from using Bazarr to fetch subs, am I supposed to run all my media stuff off the same machine that hosts Bazarr or is there an easy way to get it to grab subs for stuff on another machine?
