lost yarrow
#

Lol, a IDE to change some Files is a overkill, indeed.

lapis cipher
#

my point exactly, takes ages to start up and i don't need ide.. Dunno about "some files", i change hundreds but for example the ansible stuff i just do i simply do it with vim as i see no need for anything fancier right now, i write perfectly so no need for lints or such 😄

deft pewter
#

VSC or vi depending on whose machine I'm on.

#

I still need to learn more of those fancy secret shortcuts for vi.

#

About the most fancy I get is deleting multiple words/lines at once and pasting them back in somewhere else. Or using regex to find the bits I want to edit.

#

I should learn that replace command too.

low harness
#

It IS sed

deft pewter
#

I am sed. I just got back from my first run in 9 months. Much sed, very soar.

low harness
#

In the beginning, there was ed. ed begat ex, and ex begat vi, and vi begat Vim.

deft pewter
#

So that command invokes sed within vi?

low harness
#

sed is the brother of ed

#

Ed works on lines in a file, sed on streams.

#

But besides that it's the same thing.

static schooner
#

I thought that you could even do ‘:ex’ to drop into ex and then ‘:vi’ to get back to the new fangled ‘visual mode’

Newfangled. All you old folk showing your age 😄

low harness

deft pewter

#

I'm one of the idjits.

low harness
#

Another interesting peice of trivia is that the tool grep is also named after ed/sed. g/re/p global, regex print.

night zodiac
#

there is a neat video about that

low harness
#

Speaking of newfangled... if you press ctrl+c in vim nowadays, it prints a message explaining how to quit.

night zodiac

they are taking away the initiation process?

I've always used vim over vi

Lockdown here is a pisstake 😂

#

But it's the fault of us peasants. Nothing to do with the fact our government didn't close the borders or implement an immediate contact tracing system. Nope.

burnt cave
#

iirc there was a study done not too long ago that put lockdowns pretty far down the list of effective measures

deft pewter
#

This current lockdown started in November... they won't start relaxing it for at least another 5 weeks and even that only means 2 people can meet outdoors.

shy comet
#

"its 1 person from china, we got it handled" yup

burnt cave
#

top ones were restricting large gatherings and school closures

deft pewter
#

Schools were obvious. But our government kept saying schools were totally safe.

burnt cave
#

locking down all the small businesses is likely hurting people more than it's helping imo

#

i know a ton of small business owners that are really hurting rn

deft pewter
#

Yeah.. just cos the kids themselves don't get sick, doesn't stop them hanging around with their friends and bringing it home to their families 🤦‍♂️

burnt cave
#

hopefully UK is doing a better job than the US of aiding people in those situations

#

they totally bungled it over here in the states

deft pewter
#

I'm lucky enough to work for a corporation that's doing well through all this. I know a lot of other businesses aren't so lucky.

#

Ah... they're giving out loads of aid here. It won't be enough to save everyone, so of course there's criticism.

low harness
#

My parents are getting their second shot in two weeks!

deft pewter
#

I'm more worried about the decades of debt that follow 😐

low harness

I'm so damn happy to finally be able to hug them again!

deft pewter
#

A swift, harsh lockdown would've saved everything except the travel industry.

#

My father in-law just had his first and I think the mother in-law is due hers. Second is months away in the UK... cos they decided that they'd go against all the advice of the manufacturers and do them 12 weeks apart... 🤦‍♂️

#

BoJo keeps saying he's 'following the science', whilst doing the exact opposite of what the science says.

shy comet
deft pewter
#

Ah, the contradictions in their own messages too... they say it's not feasible to wipe it out completely, suggesting we need to learn to live with it... then:

For this reason it says some measures could remain. These could include the mantra of “hands, face and space”, the test and trace system and controls at the borders.

#

Why would we need border controls in the future if we're accepting it can't be wiped out? It'll travel...

wet pilot
#

that problem isn't unique to the FAA either

clever mortar

Face masks become the norm for everybody 😄

deft pewter

People barely wear them now

#

They won't wear them after they've vaccinated...

shy comet
#

theeres already groups forming that are anti-vax for this too

#

ive been noticing some friends talking about not wanting to take it

wet pilot
#

currency is a big deal in aviation. with good reason too, a lot of pilots are self-reporting problems as they're returning to active status

deft pewter
#

I had my reservations about it with it being so new... but all the data coming out suggests that side effects are pretty typical compared to other kinds of vaccines.

#

Happy to have it when the data says it's safe 🤷‍♂️

shy comet
#

by the time they offer it to heatlhy people in their 30s they should have that data lol

deft pewter
#

The other thing you know they'll start to introduce everywhere, at least until it's challenged in courts... fucking vaccine passports.

shy comet
#

oh for sure

deft pewter
#

I get where they're coming from but how the fuck is that not discriminatory?

shy comet
#

they do it with testing why not with vaccination

#

"its against my religion"

deft pewter
#

If someone can't/won't have it, you're gonna limit their lifestyle and opportunities? Fuck that.

#

There are already travel companies in the UK advertising that they're safe because they don't let anyone unvaccinated travel with them...

#

Yes, they're a private business and they don't have to accept someone's money. No, they can't refuse based on someone's medical history or religion.

#

That's not gonna last long.

shy comet
#

it will be interesting to watch it play out

#

you still have people lying about symptoms and shit

deft pewter
#

It'll be short-lived. Might encourage people to travel that are fortunate to have received a vaccine already... but they're basically giving everyone else a massive 'fuck you'.

#

You're at the bottom of the list, sorry. You have to wait until next year to travel.

fathom sparrow
#

I'm just traveling and not caring and quarantining after traveling, as one should.

shy comet
#

id imagine they can only do that once its available for everyone

deft pewter
#

And the last year has basically been the under-80's giving up their livelihoods to protect the over-80's... now the over-80's get to enjoy their holidays while the under-80's are still locked in their homes.

deft pewter
#

I think you have to be over 60 to even book with them. Most will be much older.

shy comet
#

oh 65+ only?

deft pewter
#

Fuck them.

#

Not literally cos that's kinda gross... but yeah.

shy comet
#

that in itself should be discriminatory 😛

#

discrimination of age

deft pewter
#

I guess... but they offer something different. I doubt many youngsters want to be on that ship with them.

shy comet
#

honestly it will be a long time until i trust a cruise ship again lol

lapis cipher
#

@deft pewter oh its that strict, sorry to hear

deft pewter

THere are hotels that advertise themselves as couples hotels. Technically discrimination but I don't think they'd actually refuse a booking from a solo traveller.

shy comet
#

they dont but youll feel really awkward being alone lol

deft pewter
#

Better than the massive group that all booked rooms together at the place we honeymooned at 😠

#

There were probably 20 of them. They clearly all knew each other. Arrive and departed on the same days. Always got up early to get all the sunbeds at the pool. Always loud.

#

We booked this place because it was out of town and was supposed to be quiet 🤷‍♂️

#

we were being cheap asses

deft pewter
#

We had a trip to London booked last March to see a couple of exhibits that were visiting. Not a package deal, so normally no protection... even got our train fare refunded when the government told the rail firms to fuck off.

#

I've had a couple of things like race entries deferred, which I was okay with. Except one that they gave practically no notice for, so I'm arguing with them for a refund...

Yeah, the charts lie.

Someone was talking about that in here the other day. That whole 210-age crap.

I'm 35... I shouldn't be able to get anywhere near 190.

That sounds like a lot of work. It'd probably kill me.

I did it peak training season and my muscles gave out before my heart did, so if you train up your HR wont be pegged

deft pewter

I guess if you ever want part of your infrastructure to be dynamic, that's kinda neat.

#

I don't get on well with the AWS Fn crap in their templates. At least CDK makes things more legible.

hushed basalt
#

Pretty much

#

It's more about ease of use,

#

Like ansible, cloudformation etc

#

All these templating "languages" fall over under real use

#

Which is why you end up with giant yaml files with a bunch of weird ugly jinja templates or Fn

#

But in cdk everything is just class instances, so whatever's you can do with typescript you can use to make instances

deft pewter
#

I don't know about falling over but they're definitely way too verbose for my liking. Will read up more on CDK and see if I can find a use for it in the future.

#

Our principle dev doesn't like new stuff though 😄

lapis cipher
#

i'm probably stupid but i've long lost the point of copypasting 98% same content from file to another to form stacks, real parameters are very few. Yes, there's funky stuff too and its incredibly easy to set certain things up (which you most often again copypaste from another ready file and change just about nothing but the name to match).

deft pewter
#

Most of our stacks are similar across environments. We use a base template, then keep extending that with overrides.

#

And since you can generate/export parameters easily enough with CF, it's trivial to customise things per stack.

#

But yeah... the idea of CDK is appealing.

today is international day of cake ? 😮

Since I've been bashing my head against this for a few days; here's how to ssh straight into WSL:

  • Add your public key to <home folder>\.ssh\authorized_keys and prepend it with a command thusly: command="C:\some\path\ssh_proxy.bat" ssh-rsa AAAA53c7e7ce1....
  • Put the following in that batch file: bat @echo off wsl ~ %SSH_ORIGINAL_COMMAND%
  • Done. Even things like scp will work now
#

The reason you need a bat file for a single command is because Microsoft - in their infinite wisdom - made %VARIABLE% work COMPLETELY F**ING DIFFERENTLY if you run it in CMD or in a command vs in a batch file.

#

Cons: This only works if you are using public key authentication.
Pros: This only works if you are using public key authentication.

#

nice, never thought of doing something this perv but i will tomorrow try it out

low harness

wsl ~ -d debian %SSH_ORIGINAL_COMMAND%
``` if you haven't set your default wsl ... machine? distro? what are they even?
i call it just subsystem (the S). I need to spend now sleepless night to figure out some use for this 😄
hushed basalt
#
Looking forward to having solar panels
#
Although this system is only 3.5KW.
hushed basalt
#
WA has a stupid 5kw export limit too
#
So if I was installing it I'd have 6.6KW of panels with 5kw inverter
burnt cave
#
@hushed basalt battery bank?
#
store your daytime stuff for nightime if you can't export it
#
I actually looked into flywheel power storage a long time ago and that seems like a viable option if you have the capability of manufacturing it yourself
#
hardest design challenge is putting the wheel on gimbal so the earth doesn't kill your power storage by rotating
static schooner
#
sounds dangerous
burnt cave
#
there's kits for it iirc
#
there's also a guy on 4chan's /diy/ board that lives in an old missile silo
#
and has a bunch of flywheel power storage
#
something like 100kwh?
#
prob more expensive than batteries but can provide huge amounts of power and never degrade if maintained
hushed basalt
#
Nah no way definitely not worth it
burnt cave
#
lol yeah that's pretty much what I concluded but food for thought
hushed basalt
#
The math just doesn't work out
burnt cave
#
for flywheels or power storage in general?
hushed basalt
#
If it was my choice I'd have 3 phase and put an east/west array on the house. As big as I am allowed
#
So the solar stretches out longer over the day
#
Then insulate and seal up the house, and use as much conditioning during the solar time
#
Then ride out most of the night without using the aircon or very little
#
Use the thermal mass of your house as a battery basically
wet pilot
#
Need to solve the stale air problem
burnt cave
#
@hushed basalt native american tech 😛
#
in the american southwest they used the thick ass bricks to basically not require climate control at all
#
cool in the day, warm at night
#
but your walls are like 2 feet thick and few windows
#
adobe, that's the word
#
like that ^
#
in other news, I have a job interview tomorrow, has anyone in here ever used oracle netsuite?
wet pilot
#
Oracle 🤢
burnt cave
#
yeah yeah ik
#
one rich asshole called larry ellison
wet pilot
#
But no
burnt cave
#
never touched it but the position is netsuite analyst
#
or something like that
hushed basalt
#
Stale air is a problem, but that's a job for heat recovery ventilators
#
But I'd have a lot more work to get a house to a level requiring that
#
In the meantime it will probably just be exhaust fans
#
And opening windows
#
A house should never rely on leaks as a form of ventilation. So sealing up the leaks wouldn't increase the need for proper ventilation, since it's something you need to do anyways
forest edge
#
I didn't think flywheel storage was meant for "long term"
#
as in nothing past a day
burnt cave
#
@forest edge it's really good for overnight solar storage, or so I've heard
#
esp if you have high power draw stuff like a big HVAC system
hushed basalt
#
I don't think flywheels are appropriate for domestic
burnt cave
#
yeah for industrial tho
hushed basalt
#
They're precision industrial devices
#
Yeah absolutely
#
Industrial they can be amazing if used strategically
burnt cave
#
I've seen some particularly bold home gamers use them
hushed basalt
#
Also for places that have short huge bursts of demand.
burnt cave
#
like off grid people that have big power tools and stuff
hushed basalt
#
I was more thinking plants and such
burnt cave
#
although I'd guess it's more out of curiosity than practicality
hushed basalt
#
Say a factory has some process that uses 1000A of draw for 10 seconds every 10 minutes
burnt cave
#
they can also be really good if you need some ridiculously large short burst of power
#
yeah
hushed basalt
#
But yeah for off-grid homeowners, off grid is not economical, it's just what you have to do
#
Well it's economical compared to paying for 5km of powerlines
burnt cave
#
giant spinny wheel is way more metal than batteries 😛
hushed basalt
#
But if you're in a grid area, it's always cheaper to connect to the grid
#
Here at least
#
I mean off grid batteries
burnt cave
#
when I buy a house in this area I was gonna do home solar and batteries
#
cause the power is kinda shitty
hushed basalt
#
Yeah if your power is shitty that's another thing
#
A lot of standard battery systems don't even work with no grid power. That's another piece of expensive equipment to handle that
burnt cave
#
I was just gonna scoop a bunch of AGM car batteries and jerry rig a BMS
hushed basalt
#
I wouldn't recommend that
#
You'll end up with an expensive dead set of batteries in 6 months
burnt cave
#
AGMs you can drain pretty low iirc
wet pilot
#
need at least 10 in serial to get 120v (if us)
burnt cave
#
inverter
hushed basalt
#
Yeah you'd always use an inverter
wet pilot
#
your voltage will be inconsistent as hell though
hushed basalt
#
But I think most proper setups use 48v batteries. Series parallel setups will die fast
burnt cave
#
I have a good amount of car audio experience so I kinda sorta know what I'm doing when it comes to ridiculous battery setups
#
never tried applying to a house tho, i'd do more research ofc
hushed basalt
#
But yeah trust me don't use 12v, don't use car batteries and don't use lead
burnt cave
#
but that's what I'd try with current knowledge
wet pilot
#
aircraft batts would get you closer at 24v
burnt cave
#
I could always use tried and true 18650
hushed basalt
#
You'd need a proper house charger/inverter built for this sort of thing.
