I can't believe it took me this long to find a font I like that has ligatures. Now I get all the fancy ass symbols instead of === and =>

that's a major who cares 🙂

Like these?

And I cared... fucking around with my fonts and themes is probably more productive than most of my Friday afternoons 😄

Could've sworn I'd done more this week 😄

There's no way those graphs are accurate. I just merged a PR with 63 commits, all done in the last 2 weeks.

Anybody use a NUC for HA? Thinking of downgrading from my rack server to something smaller with lower power. HA and Nextcloud are my heaviest containers, unsure if I should go with one powerful NUC or two cheaper ones

You should take the time to read channel topics.

deft pewter

deft pewter

I think it's just a button.

#

Oh... if you're looking at an NFC model, when they say to 'tap' it, they just mean holding it to your device.

last dirge
#

ooh, there's one in development with a fingerprint reader

#

so, how the hell does this thing present itself to the OS?

deft pewter

You're better off asking @clear ferry. I've never used one.

deft pewter

Function WebAuthn, FIDO2 CTAP1, FIDO2 CTAP2, Universal 2nd Factor (U2F), Smart card (PIV-compatible), Yubico OTP, OATH – HOTP (Event), OATH – TOTP (Time), Open PGP, Secure Static Password

#

I'm hoping it comes with setup instructions so a noob like me can follow.

last dirge
#

the info on their site's a bit...sparse

#
  1. plug it in
  2. touch it
  3. ???
  4. profit
deft pewter

It'll be a challenge/response process like TOTP. I don't know what the actual mechanism for displaying the challenge is.

The way atx talked, the browser will show something and you just plug it in.

last dirge

deft pewter

last dirge

it's pretty cool

#

uses little smart cards to store the password stuff

you lock/unlock it with a PIN

deft pewter

Yeah, just looked it up. Looks pretty cool.

deft pewter

Can't decide if I like it or not. Looks snazzy but I sometimes type with one hand across the whole keyboard if I'm lazy.

last dirge
#

doesn't force any angles, can push it around like it's comfortable

deft pewter
#

Yeah, I can see the appeal.

last dirge
#

started using it when I hurt my shoulder

#

could have half of it in my lap on a lapdesk where I didn't have to move my hand/elbow

deft pewter
#

Pretty handy

last dirge
#

this yubikey thing doesn't look like it's very portable unless the app is on the key itself

deft pewter
#

I'm only halfway through the video, so I still know very little about how they work 😄

last dirge
#

was it you arguing with me about gamestonk?

deft pewter
#

Looks like the magic is in U2F.

#

Arguing? That's a bit strong 😄 I said I don't think it's gonna take off.

last dirge
#

DFV posted his positions again today, he's doubled down

#

LOL

deft pewter
#

He's made his money. He can afford to screw around more 🤷‍♂️

#

Can't really lose from where he's at unless they go bust. It's all the fools that bought in near the peak thinking it'd go higher that'll lose everything.

last dirge
#

the authenticator app isn't on the key

deft pewter
#

YEah, the app is software. But it sounds like you only care about the app for TOTP. If you're doing U2F, you just have it plugged in.

last dirge
#

yeah

deft pewter
#

I think I can use U2F with both GitHub and Azure AD, which is the things I hate logging into constantly through the day.

last dirge
#

with Azure I just used the push approval

#

did you not set that up?

deft pewter
#

Screw push. Gotta use the Microsoft Authenticator for that.

last dirge
#

as opposed to what?

deft pewter
#

Google Authenticator for me. But I don't bother with my phone anyway... I use the OTP integration on HA 😄

#

Copy/paste the code from my dashboard.

last dirge
#

eh, I don't like that you can't lock Authenticator

deft pewter
#

I lock my phone... 🤷‍♂️

last dirge
#

as do I but if someone gets access to my phone there's no additional layer there

deft pewter
#

At the end of the day, if someone has physical access, it's game over.

last dirge
#

I just realized that this would make me carry shit in my pockets

#

my phone handles pretty much everything except getting into my house

#

so I just carry my wallet and phone

deft pewter

I don't carry much either. Phone, slim wallet, car key, two house keys. I don't mind adding the Yubikey to that.

last dirge

what flavor switch is that?

#

@umbral glade

umbral glade
#

Kasa by tp-link. I think this is a hs200? I bought 3 because they work pretty seamlessly with homeassistant, are less than $20, and don't require an internet connection or account to use. I think you need internet to set them up but you can skip the account step.

#

A big clock?

Big ben?

Oh, big block

373 cu in?

#

One I was looking at 107 + 107m2

But I am 99% sure I won't get it

hushed basalt
#

643sqm block, 4 bed 2 bath, study, theatre, games room and study nook, plus open plan living room/kitchen

#

Big house too

last cedar
#

DAMN

hushed basalt
#

Only think I'm worried about is the bathrooms

#

I think the have no waterproofing and they tile/grout has failed

#

So I'd need to redo the bathrooms completely, plus let them dry for 6 months

last cedar
#

That can get very expensive

hushed basalt
#

I mean I'd want to redo the bathrooms anyway since they're crap

last cedar
#

One at once is doable

hushed basalt
#

Yeah especially since the kids are still small

#

Would be a pain if they were teenagers

last cedar
#

The place I looked at had a huge shower room, and 2 seprrate toilets, which was odd

#

Yeah, defo

hushed basalt
#

The ensuite isn't too huge here

Bigger than what we are in now but not big enough for an ensuite bath

#

So I need an office as well as a nook to use a normal computer

last cedar
#

No more kids for me anyway, one is 11 one is 17 :D

#

Possibly grand children soon haha

#

I need a bit house for my gaming room that I will probably never use and for hoarding all my stuff

#

But not as big as you need

#

Good luck if you decide to make bids on it :)

hushed basalt
#

Yeah I probably want to have a gaming pc setup

#

I 1000% am not going in my office when I'm not working

#

last cedar
#

I will need to be able to work from home, but I don't normally. But yeah, I get that

hushed basalt
#

I work from home at least 3 days a week

last cedar
#

Want a sim racing rig and somewhere I can play minecraft and stuff with 11 year old

hushed basalt
#

And I'd do it full time if i ever went out and started working for myself

#

This place has a huge activity room with a door

#

Like big enough for a king size pool table and couches sort of size

#

So will probably end up putting a gaming setup there.

#

Plus all the kids stuff

#

@rare condor do you know much about bathroom waterproofing

on the storage i've got drums (another but e-kit next to me in this "office"). Just about no room to play on neither

last cedar

House I was looking at would fit 2 cars in garage

Which is nice

that storage was supposed to be more of a working area for me, do some small electrical things, build things and stuff but no, its piled up with everything.. Coming back to "never big enough" 😄

Is cat6 what one would choose today, though?
Not saying I would need any more but who knows what crazy shenanigans you'll need to support in the future.

amber bramble

yeah i'd go cat6 now if you're running new cable

#

atleast, cat6 over cat5

#

maybe some fiber if you're feeling extra fancy

cedar chasm
#

I have nothing but the vaguest of ideas around this but with cat7 and cat8 existing, is not one of those more futuristic?

burnt cave
#

real men have a complex system of pulleys and levers for data transfer

cedar chasm

tcp/ip over pidgeon or gtfo, pls

burnt cave
#

maybe fiber if I'm feeling rich

#

i'm a bit in the dark on fiber tech

#

what's the one that uses an LED for signaling for cost at the expense of range?

cedar chasm
#

multimode

burnt cave
#

right

#

that's prob what I'd roll with since I doubt you'd have runs longer than that could handle in a residential setup

#

if I were doing fiber

cedar chasm
#

We did some fiber splicing in class last year

#

fiendishly fragile stuff

burnt cave
#

i remember seeing a video of some HFT guys that just have a giant spool of fiber to simulate intercontinental fiber latency

cedar chasm
#

wouldn't want to have to stuff it in a wall without some serious financial heft

clear ferry
#

Cat6a for any new installations

burnt cave
#

@cedar chasm if you get the plastic instead of glass fibers it's way less finnicky I've heard

#

at the expense of range once again

#

like a TOSLINK cable kinda

cedar chasm
#

that's interesting; didn't cover that at all

burnt cave
#

but also probably still good enough for residential

#

here is an example

#

a lot more bendable and easier to terminate/splice

#

or so I've heard

#

also I would like to take a second to bring up that toslink is awesome and it's a shame it never got updated to support newer stuff like atmos

#

optical isolation solves so many stupid problems in audio equipment

#

and having an option other than HDMI for modern surround sound would be cool

clear ferry
#

Eh, long live glass

#

Om3 or better

burnt cave
#

i mean if you need 10km runs I guess glass is good

#

otherwise I don't see much reason to use it

clear ferry
#

MMF is only 300m anyway

burnt cave
#

yeah

clear ferry
#

SMF is 70km if you need

burnt cave
#

i thought single mode could go way farther than 70km with the right transceivers

like

intercontinental

clear ferry

burnt cave

burnt cave
#

if I get the job I'm interviewing for this upcoming week

#

first thing I'm doing is buying a house

#

and i'm 100% gonna wire it up with fiber

is there some way to convert optical ethernet to rj45?

for devices that I can't put a transceiver in

clear ferry
#

There are converters yes

burnt cave
#

solid

clear ferry

Up to gigabit

burnt cave

last cedar
#

Yeah, d vice es

#

I will just run a 10A socket to server rack, on its own RCD

#

16A 3 phase is overkill

last dirge
#

wat

#

@last cedar where do you live?

last cedar
#

Swedish standard

last dirge
#

ah

last cedar
#

1,5mm2 cable 10A singple phase twin and earth, or 2,5 for 16A 4mm for 20A etc

#

Can run 5 core for 3 phase

#

Planning to run 4mm to stuff like oven and hob, and 2,5 to kitchen etc where they have prolonged loads

#

Charging electric car for 11 hours on a 10A socket with 1,5mm seems dodgy to me

last dirge
#

charging at that low power seems dodgy to me

last cedar
#

Well

last dirge
#

but, what do I know 🙂

last cedar
#

Swedish homes usually have 20A or 16A main fuses

#

3 phase

last dirge
#

I charge at 32A 240V single phase

last cedar
#

So you really need a proper charging station that runs 16A 3 phase to get it done quick

last dirge
#

if I need to "get it done quick" I go to the supercharger that's 4 miles away and charge at 190kW

last cedar
#

Getting 25A or 35A fuses installed isn't always possible thanks to thin cable coming in

#

4mm or 6mm coming in isn't unheard of, can only use 20 or 25A main fuse then

last dirge
#

that's pretty insane

last cedar
#

It is

last dirge
#

I've got 4/0 incoming

last cedar
#

Gonna proper do us over in the long run

#

Also, the fees for having such a big fuse is astronomical

#

16A costs 380 euro a year

#

63A costs nearly 2000 euro a year in fees

last dirge
#

how much is power though?

last cedar
#

Around 0,1 euro per kWh

#

As a rough number

last dirge
#

no way

last cedar
#

We pay about 70 euro for 450kWh in appartment

#

About half is fees and taxes, and half electric

last dirge
#

oh, my converter dorked out

#

that's about what I pay

#

I pay .115/kWh

#

plus taxes

last cedar
#

So like charging a hybrid might cost like 1,5 euro

last dirge
#

plus membership fee

last cedar
#

Electric is expensive

#

Would love to live with solar and batteries, not gonna happen yet in Sweden, would need a huge bit of land with panels

last dirge
#

panels are getting cheaper and cheaper

cedar chasm
#

I play with the thought of trying to get something like the Tesla Powerwall set up, just to get power from the utility company at night, while electric is cheap, then use it the rest of the day. at least for some of the less taxed circuits in my home

last dirge
#

cedar chasm
last cedar

Would need monster panels, and a lot of them, south facing and enough battery power to keep me going. Would have to do the maths, but almost certain it is impossible

#

As it is today, most sell to the grid, and use mains otherwise

hushed basalt

last cedar

hushed basalt

So you have have 1/2/3/4 buttons for preset heights as well as manual adjustments

#

I want the new Dell 40" ultrawide monitor but that's like $2.5k AUD lol

last cedar
#

Ouchhhhh

#

I have to get to bed anyway.

I would just put some money aside for something fun and buy it when you move. Whatever you decide!

#

Nn all!

clear ferry

I paid $50 for a used adjustable desk, $35 for a triple monitor gas adjusted holder, $120 for a backapp chair and $300 for 2x4k monitors, I'm set in the home office

deft pewter
#

Now claim back $5k in expenses...

clear ferry
#

Well, still waiting for that work from home compensation, last I heard it was $1000, they are just arguing of it is one time or yearly

deft pewter
#

We had a monthly payment for our bills. They stopped it at the beginning of the winter, right as it got cold and we wanted payments for our bills 😂

#

But I'm spending less on fuel and lunches now, so I'm still up.

clear ferry
#

I have all my lunches and breakfasts covered anyway

#

And fuel for that matter

deft pewter
#

Yeah... I doubt there are many places in the UK that generous. It's called Rip-Off Britain for a reason.

clear ferry
#

Heck, I also have all dinners and alcohol covered when travelling

deft pewter
#

Having expenses paid while away from home is normal here. Free lunch at the office? Nah.

#

The way most places view it is that if you're at your 'normal place of work', you pay for everything yourself.

clear ferry
#

I have never really had an office

#

I work on the go

#

And visit the office... When bored

deft pewter
#

Yeah, that's my goal. Maybe once a month 😄

clear ferry
deft pewter
hushed basalt
#

I go in about twice a week

#

I like it though, it's good to be around the team,

#

plus we go out for breakfast Friday morning

#

I just wish they had better monitors at the office. USB-C docks or monitors would be nice.

#

Dicky usb-c to hdmi dongles don't do 4K over 30Hz

deft pewter
#

Oh... while you're here. That PR came in at just over 2500 lines by the time all tests were written 😂

#

About 200 lines of production code.

deft pewter
#

lol... so apparently humans are responsible for the extinction of prehistoric creatures 🤣

hushed basalt
#

We probably were

#

But it'd be dumb to bring them back now

deft pewter
#

We weren't around 1mil years ago. Humans are around 200k years old.

#

Otherwise, I'd agree with the rest. We shouldn't be messing with nature. We can't even preserve what we have, we shouldn't be introducing other species into an ecosystem.

hushed basalt
#

Wooly mammoths only died out about ~10000 years ago

#

That's our adolescent years in civilisation

#

But it was probably global warming

deft pewter
#

Some mammoths sure. That mammoth died 1mil years ago.

hushed basalt
#

Australia was prehistoric since 1788 so it's all relative

deft pewter
#

Until the penal colony started up, right?

hushed basalt
#

Well settlement

#

Prehistoric just means no written history

#

Which there wasn't

deft pewter
#

Do the Aboriginal people have their own written system?

hushed basalt
#

No

deft pewter
#

😮

#

That's nuts

hushed basalt
#

Just hunter gatherers until 1788

#

That's only ~100 years before Hitler was born

deft pewter
#

So strange to think that different cultures around the world progressed at such different rates until exposed to each other.

#

Especially when some cultures had languages and even systems of law and government thousands of years ago.

hushed basalt
#

Yeah it's crazy how tiny variations can snowball

#

The lack of nutrtion and water probably was a big factor

deft pewter
#

And the crazy number of deadly critters...

hushed basalt
#

Relatively infertile soil and dry land just means less people could be supported

deft pewter
#

Too busy trying to stay alive to come up with literature.

hushed basalt
#

Never developed agriculture so less people could be supported

#

Less people just means less innovation

#

90% of the worlds population lives in the northern hemisphere

#

It was probably 99% back then

deft pewter
#

Makes sense. The earliest civilisations were in rich areas.

hushed basalt
#

Estimates say there was ~500k people in Australia before 1788

#

That's in a country the size of USA

#

And literally cut off from the world by rising sea levels

deft pewter
#

Compared to 3,929,214 in 1790 for the USA. I expected the difference to be bigger.

#

8 times smaller... but the USA was the land of opportunity. People were heading over in their droves.

#

I was going to ask that. I never knew how people reached Australia in the first place. Land bridge during an ice age?

hushed basalt
#

Yeah

#

Image result for highest sea levels have ever been

#

20 thousand and 60 thousand years ago the sea levels were 135 and 110m lower respectively

#

Side note, look at how high the sea levels were half a billion years ago

deft pewter
#

Stuff like this always makes me feel so small. I know 135m isn't much when you're talking distance... but for mean sea level to change that much, that's a massive amount of water.

hushed basalt
#

That's why places have "hills" a certain level inland from the coast. That used to be the coast

#

I remember our science teacher in high school to us to the hills

#

And showed us the seashell fossils

deft pewter
#

Trying to find a 'simulator' for sea level rises. Best I can find is one that goes to +60m... but that means my house becomes a seafront view 😮

deft pewter
#

Wow. Adelaide wouldn't do well 😄

hushed basalt
#

To show the million year span sea level rises

deft pewter
#

Wasn't thinking of the past, was just curious what things would look like if they go up even more.

hushed basalt
#

But yeah we'll probably be overttaken by AI before then

deft pewter
#

+60m basically wipes out most of your big cities 😦

hushed basalt
#

And nothing of value was lost

#

But yes most cities will have sea walls in the futurr

#

Doesn't need anywhere near 60m either

deft pewter
#

It's scary shit and it'll start in our lifetimes.

clever mortar

All season and winter tyres have little marks to let you know

deft pewter

I make my wife angry every time I go out in the snow. The way out of our cul de sac has a couple of tight corners but the roads are wide and there are never cars parked there... so I test the traction 😄

clever mortar

deft pewter

I'd rather know how it handles before I get onto busy roads 🤷‍♂️

clever mortar
#

I got to test the traction without that - our roads were bad enough that you went sliding around regardless

deft pewter

I just apply a little oversteer and see how much it takes me to start going sideways. It's all good fun.

#

And unlike what seems like the majority of drivers, I know what to do to recover from a skid.

clever mortar
#

Mind you, I also got to watch the FedEx van try to go up the hill and turn left. Instead he went up the hill and right, at an angle 🤣

#

Yeah, knowing your car matters. I much prefer FWD over RWD for limited grip situations

#

I did get to spend a while playing with a RWD drive car in mud, and it wasn't half as easy to manage as FWD

deft pewter
#

I honestly don't know whether ours is FWD or AWD. Would never want a RWD.

#

As soon as the back goes, you're just trying to push the back end further in the wrong direction. What a stupid idea 😄

clever mortar
#

Sneaky way to tell is by tyre wear - if front or rear tyres wear faster they're typically the driving wheels

#

Of course, this requires you to be paying attention, or have replaced tyres already

dull chasm

burnout ....is the most postive way

deft pewter

Yeah... only 2000 miles in on this 15 month old car... tyre wear isn't a clue yet 😄

And that's before getting started on the 2 wasted episodes at the beginning 😠

#

It should've been maybe 4 or 5 hour long episodes, with the first two episodes done a lot quicker.

hushed basalt
#

Yeah the concept seems good overall, but it's a way too short format with a lot of waste

#

General MCU cheese over eveything of course. Plus the layer of Disney over that as well

deft pewter
#

I love the concept. It's just a shame that it took until about season 4 to actually get any plot and season 7 to start to lift the veil.

#

For a 9 episode series, that's terrible pacing.

hushed basalt
#

Side note to our conversation earlier

#

If sea levels went back to their peak height, the eiffel tower would be completely underwater

deft pewter
#

It'd be a shame to lose such a memorable landmark. Can't say the same about the rest of Paris.

hushed basalt
#

I wouldn't worry about it, it would take hundreds of millions of years to get to that point

deft pewter
#

Depends how much more we screw up

hushed basalt
#

I doubt whatever dominant species of Earth by then would care

clear ferry
#

I wish that other ISP would want to deliver here

deft pewter
#

The ring builders will be back by then to fix it.

hushed basalt
#

I mean we'll be lucky to see 6 inches of sea level rise in our lifetime

clear ferry
#

I could get 1000\1000 instead of 500\500 for the same price

hushed basalt
#

Will destroy a 0m above sea level island

clear ferry
#

you mean Holland @hushed basalt

hushed basalt
#

If you rely on a sea dam in the 20th century then you deserve what's coming

deft pewter
#

Yeah, a whole lot of people are going to have to relocate.

winter wren

relocate to orbital space colonies

#

and when that happens, naturally the next step is:

hushed basalt
#

I would say people would just dam cities if they're affected

cedar chasm
#

mechs and war in space

hushed basalt
#

Basically it would be dams along rivers

clear ferry

BELTA WALLA

hushed basalt
#

But that's at least hundreds of years away for most

hushed basalt
deft pewter
#

Just make amphibious cars and we'll be fine. Everyone wants a boat, right?

hushed basalt
cedar chasm
#

Oh, and sorry about Sydney in that gif I posted

hushed basalt
#

Basically it'll look like that

#

No way capitalists would abandon real estate

#

We'll build the greatest wall you've ever seen

#

And the poor will pay for it :)

cedar chasm
#

And Mother Earth will pay for it

deft pewter
#

That sounds familiar

hushed basalt
#

The expanse is probably the most realistic depiction of the 24th century

#

Within the bounds of our ability to predict the future. Which is pretty poor

clear ferry
deft pewter
#

Well at least there's fusion power... that's always only 10 years away.

#

And if we can't predict things 10 years out, I don't have much hope for any predictions centuries out...

burnt cave
#

fusion has been making leaps

#

it's honestly incredible seeing as it's been sitting below the "will never happen" funding level for the last 40 years

deft pewter
#

It's getting better, sure... but it's still 10 years away.

hushed basalt
#

The racoon hamster wheel turbine industry will never let fusion power become mainstream

burnt cave

YbCo superconductors are a Big Deal™️

among many other advancements in the last few years

keep an eye on SPARC et. al.

clear ferry
#

I was incredibly impressed I had stored my rclone crypt config for my plex cloud storage

burnt cave
#

there's some above break even fusion reactors in production rn

#

if those work, which there's no reason they shouldn't, expect commercial production by 2050

#

as a realistic timescale

hushed basalt
deft pewter
#

Noice. 30 years time. So I'll get to enjoy this when I retire, if I'm not already dead by then.

clear ferry
#

I should print out my rclone crypt keys and put them in the safe

#

together with a copied yubikey

burnt cave
#

we're basically borrowing time to get fusion working by ruining the planet

hushed basalt

Just upload to GitHub

deft pewter
#

Public repo only, thanks.

clear ferry
#

just keep your eyes peeled boys

hushed basalt
#

Use a githubs action and a secret to get around that pesky credential denying hook

#

Then just echo the secrets in your public action

#

Or use shitty applications that stdout everything

#

Urgh I can't believe the appdaemon container actually sed's your secret variables into your config file

I was playing Untitled Goose Game with the 5-year old the other day.
