my house has absolute trash insulation
i've been wearing 3 bathrobes to stay warm indoors lol
we go from -25c to +15c in one day at the moment
Same here, we are moving from -20c to +5c
until your distribution point explodes ❄️💥
my local power company is remarkably competent
unless you need to get a new hookup
that shit takes months
Australia's housing standards are worse than Croatia's
no texas situation here
Literally no joke
@clear ferry do you know that developers can not only write tests, but can actually write them first
What madness is this?
Lol nice guy troll
You can do it for infrastructure too
Instead of just waiting for the screams @clear ferry
I just made a pre-wire guide for a smart home. If anyones interested: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/10motv9mZwJQgF_ojdYzgM9g-3ICoNgEKm61o8i0JPzg/edit?usp=sharing
shame that in a few months much of that may be obsolete
Lol. That's the price you pay messing with tech.
<region relative greeting>
funny, I almost copied this as hello message... show log messages.6.gz | except "vhclient|cron|ip6_forward_cb|xntpd|hw.chassis.startup_time"
atx wanted paste 🤷♂️
looks like ma 👏 yo 👏 nnai👏 se
I live in an 80's build Australian house. I think there is less airflow outside.
My house is consistently warmer than outside in summer and cooler in winter
You might as well live outside
At night, yes
Knock down the walls, call it done 😛
Like how a car in the sun is hotter than outside
Then add thermal mass from double brick veneer
Imagine filling a car up with 500kg of water bottles and putting it in the sun for a day and then trying to sleep in it
A black car too
Sounds like you would be hot and wet
Wet?
Do raccons need a lesson in how plastic works
I bit holes in all the bottles.
Sorry
@clear ferry my work has an office cabled with about 48 cat6 points
And they have everything running off google meshes
🤢
What is it?
It's like a full 20U cabinet with like 4 switches/routers, PSU, single mode fibre, 3 patch panels
Can raccoons eat it?
And they're using one ethernet port for the base mesh
@last cedar a ESP to 64 IO board
Cool. Let me know if you need any help with config. I use my own arguing code and mqtt because esphome don’t connect to the api when It takes to long to boot reading 64 inputs
That would replace an arduino doing thr same job, I guess
I'm going to design a 3D printed case for it
I'm deeply impressed by the routing on the board
My 3D printed face plate for my rack was a little too busy.
Is it called logix home 0.8?
I just realized the board is too wide for my printer, so have to design the case to be printed in two parts perhaps 🤣
thats what I did.
NOICE
also, wtf is your dell switch upside down? I know they are shite but that is just mean 🤣
🤣
Thats the new 32 port version I just made. The Dell switch is upside down. Its dead just setting there to keep off floor
Got to be careful with packet loss, the packets fall out
reminds me of some prank call I heard in norwegian in the late 90s, some guy had issues with his internet, so the guy he called told him to unplug it it and put it in a bucket so the overflowing packets that were blocking the cable could run out
🤣
lol, I notice after i plugged in the patch cable and dont feel like unplugging
what do you use the USB ports for on the 32 version ?
well, I actually use a esp32mx-e with ethernet on mine. since I wanted it rack mount I built in a usb and ethernet passthru to the front. I have the esp inside and plug them into the back passthru to expose the ports in front
This case works good, all you need to do is print a faceplate and mount inside - BUD Industries PRM-14462
What does board run on? 24V DC?
This older case was too busy. I went all LED and button happy
I still love it
Did you ever make any manual for it ? If not I might have something to do 🤣
I put some stuff on my github, but no. I might have some esphome yaml on there, lemme see
Also the AMS1117 looks perfect for my alarm project PCB 🤔
They are cheap and easy, the expanders run off 3.3V and the 5v feeds to the shinny connectors and esp. I would use the black connectors first for experimenting. Thats 16 gpios
only GPIO no power ? the shiny ones are power and GPIO right ?
Probably go with my Wroom dev boards
and the little switched turn power on and off
Thats some example yaml for expander port. But the i2c pins are dependent on the esp you use and of course take out the LAN and LCP stuff and add for the ports you want to activate. You need to assign each chip an id based on the 4 addresses.
This might work better for you....https://github.com/logichousepcb/Wemos32/blob/main/wemos32.yaml
interesting stuff
@crude acorn thanks! I got caught up in a troubleshooting case 😄
Update 1/31/2021 - Uploaded un-cut versions of the top and bottom by request.
Update 1/23/2021 - Fixed scaling and re-uploaded Facade 2 - Display Shelf
This is a remix from https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:398515 It has been scaled down 15% from the original so that all of the parts will fit on an Ender 3 (may have to turn off skirts/brims...
I love it
I need a keyboard
Ergonomic split, what are people using
I have a Microsoft sculpt at home but I need something for work
Does anyone know of a “commercial” version of HA? I’m thinking of using it at work to automate some things.
i don't think there is... from a licensing standpoint you can just use it since its using Apache License 2.0
Got it. I’ll set it up then, no harm in trying. Our entire IT department uses HA already at home, so I was thinking it would be pretty easy to use at work
Just don't run it on a pi or an odroid 😉
and if your question is regarding stability, just don't run the latest beta versions and you'll be safe
64 cores min req.
64, what is this ? servers for ants ?
Aw crap I only have 2 cores
Core 2 duo server, will that work?
I think that one has 64 cores..

you could download some more
One does not simply kid into Mordor
or just let atx airdrop a dc into your backyard
Hmm.. the only issue I can see is that HA doesn’t support commercial access control systems
Just write a component
I know a guy who does, maybe he could help me
pf, one instance per user - solved
Oh this HA instance won’t be exposed to our network, just the network the TVs and stuff are on lol
Can we take the HA talk to a support channel? Thanks.
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived.
If it's a question about the HA Blue start in #330990055533576204. Install related problems go to your Installation Method channel.

i am assuming these are drives?
No, servers @tame sand
Hmm, it used to be fine to bitch and shitpost about HA in here, as long as it wasn't a support question 🤔
I bitch about it a ton without expecting any support in return. lol
mono is a party pooper
Asking about version of HA and what it'll run on is clearly support...
Didn't see that, just the thing about commercial access control systems
@tame sand actually we used to have 4x servers per slot earlier, so you could get 180 servers in 4U
Also, telling someone to run HA on a 4U is absolutely shitposting. lol
yeah but what is the "servers" ... like is it all cpus or what
That one shows the 4x node one, plus a mirror boot disk one and a single disk one
Current models
The m710x is the most popular one
Intel's 6th Generation Skylake SoC (System on a Chip) with integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics P580 enables real time transcoding of HEVC up to four 4K streams at 30 FPS.
iLO on cartridge means you can now view and control all of your Moonshot severs remotely.
Significantly expanded memory and storage from previous generation. Up to 64 GB DDR4 and up to 4 TB of NVMe.
dufuq... that thing has to hotter than the sun and suck more power than a whole city
The 750 is a new one
High Performance. The HPE ProLiant m750 Server Blade delivers high performance for end-user computing workloads thru its combination of Intel Xeon E-2286M CPU and 128 GB of high speed memory.
Energy efficient. The HPE ProLiant m750 Server Blade delivers high performance in a thrifty 75 Watt server blade package that delivers low cost per watt used.
Manageability. The HPE ProLiant m750 Server Blade uses HPE iLO 5 to deliver awesome manageability and high security for end-user computing workloads.
haven't seen that one yet
I've installed a few of the m700s in days of yore, nice with 180 of these per 4u
a fully poulated one would cost 200k upwards or what?
It's nice when you put 10x those chassis in rack
and have 1800 HDI nodes
even @subtle pasture has to be
about that
HDI = Hosted desktop infrastructure, instead of virtualized
or something
so each user gets one node, instead of a VM
@clear ferry What now?
@tame sand all of the cartridges are here I think https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docLocale=en_US&docId=emr_na-a00097925en_us#N10364
How do you like functions as a service
Or as the marketing people call it
Serverless
You're supposed to spread that out across the month, not cram it into a single day
Less code less headaches
Zero code = zero bugs
Ah no code. The magic panacea that will solve all business problems
I'd rather write some code to automate a task across 200 endpoints than log into them all manually, one at a time >_>
Meant to write 2000, but any number really...
I don't miss using ansible
Last week's work that I'm about to merge in:
I feel way too productive. This isn't like me.
That's too big
Fuck, i wish we had Ansible at work. Everything is done with ConnectWise Automate (formerly LabTech)
I like 10 line weeks better.
merge conflict intensifies
I think I did 4 PRs today and they were all like 30 lines
I'd love to make this smaller. This is a single feature.
Then it's too bif
Haha. It doesn't do that much. A lot of that is tests.
I am just now learning ansible, because that is what most customers I encounter use
Ansible is a pig
Maybe a few hundred lines for the code itself.
I should probably learn chef and puppet at some point too
those are quite popular
but meh, I need more time
End users really should be avoiding configing servers
end users 🤢
Depends. I wouldn't want to configure actual servers but sometimes the environment is part of the application. We set up our EC2 and VPC ourselves
Though we're moving to serverless, just too slowly
Terraform/chef/puppet/ansible/etc ... all very useful tools
Terraform and ansible are two very different tools
Yes, but also very useful 😉

just found out about media sources. Thanks homeassistant team for adding it!
There's a team? 🤯
if there's a team maybe we can bet on it with draftkings
Mmm, draft. Now I'm thirsty.
you just reminded me I still have fancy beers left in the back of my fridge
dev team? nabu-casa I thought works on it
anyways whoever did it thanks! notifications with camera images with auth
There's a core dev team, sure... but there are thousands of other contributors too.
2377 contributors on core
332 on the front end. though there will likely be overlap between the 2 counts
Exactly. Thousands.
Technically ten is also thousands... just a fraction of one 😛
Surprised you didn't whip up a quick Jinja template to find the unique values in those sets.
Yeah, but then we'd discover that there's really only three developers and they just keep changing their accounts
I mean, have you seen any of them together?
The most I've ever seen simultaneously was 7. Not even in the same room.
Could've all been smoke and mirrors.

is atx's child called micro-ATX 🤔
Series? I haven't even written the first one.
@tame sand you monster, now I am wondering who btx is
I thought our @clear ferry was Extended ATX 🤣
Probably 😂
christ, some nuthead was driving with a moped past us.. its.. its -20 degC out there.. That's crazy finn even to my taste

He's atx_by_ea
So, obviously, you'll need to pay for the DLC for Extended ATX

[The Infinite Monkey Cage] The Fundamentals of Reality #theInfiniteMonkeyCage
https://podcastaddict.com/episode/118871613 via @PodcastAddict
The Fundamentals of Reality Brian Cox and Robin Ince are joined by Nobel prize winning physicist Frank Wilczek, cosmologist Janna Levin, and comedians Eric Idle and Sara Pascoe to look at what physics has revealed about the reality of our universe. From Einstein's equations more than 100 years ago through to the amazing discoveries we've made in...
So I looked over the neighbours fence to see what was going on with the dog
They just lock it in a tiny section of the yard all day
Like there's no reason they can't even give it the full yard. I suspect it's so it doesn't poo on their paving
To give you an idea of the size, it's about the size of aisle of a school bus, cut in half
if you cannot afford the time and attention a animal deserves, you shouldn't get one in the first place. poor thing
I woke up today at 6AM to my neighbor's dog wailing. It often does that when they are not at home. I don't get why people who live in small apartments even get dogs, it must be awful for the animals...
my neighbour has a cow-sized dog which never gets to a walk.. "because it never poops on a walk".. so her hobby is then to collect the shit around the yard in the evenings with a headlight.. And does the dog bark, everything, that's what happens when you don't go to walks.. prkl
good thing is those piles of crap are easy to find as they are huge..
whats all this rolling blackout stuff? norway some 3rd world country or somethin

never lost it
I just replied with this is what happens when you buy shit
wasn't laughing when juniper died, everything is shit eventually
feel free to replace with any $vendor
but to your amusement i've got it all around unifi products, i'll let you know when it breaks 🙂
If it is installed with regards to failover and redundancy, it never fails, unless it is Cisco aci
its most often the human factor that gets them broken, buggy software, configs,... and then they fail
Eh, the 25000 port and 1500 AP network I configured in 2014 haven't had any outages beyond rolling updates, call me when ubiquiti does that
not sure if there's much point comparing some huge company infra to a 2-3 person home infra 😄
You brought up juniper in the same breath as ubiquiti
yeah my bad, i took it personally due to my ubi-infra 🤣
it'll fail some day, that's a fact, so far it fills my needs better than those previous crappy setups with huawei ap's and what nots
My Linksys mesh was $150 for three APs, but I run a seperate test network of 3 MSM466, plus opnsense as perimiter
I started to revamp my infra as the speeds started to be ridiculous and almost prevented me already from working remotely. Root cause on the ISP end, i am stuck on LTE connection..
But then again my core is 2x5900AF and my distribution is Aruba 2930s
And I have a 500/500 fiber uplink
my offer for fiber was 50000+ € so i thought the LTE is still quite alright 😄
They want like 3000 euro in Sweden these days
what in tarnation
github says they have support for yubikey
but when I try to add it there is no "add security key"

oh, you have to add sms or totp first
Well, I managed to add mine somehow 🤷
wtf
there we go
that was fast
I should buy a second yubikey and lock it in the safe actually..
I bought two at the same time ages ago... I don't actually know where the "spare" is 🤣
My wife has the second I bought 🤣
and she uses it!
ah, yubikey enabled on my bitwarden
lets see if it works
How does it work with stuff like GitHub if you're on desktop? Does the website know when you insert the USB?
So it can replace your password? I guess if you have organisation SSO enabled too, you can't bypass that.
no, it is 2FA
YubiKey 5C NFC ooooooh
@low harness I thought you mentioned the yubikey was broken on bitwarden, as in just click cancel and login, appears to kick me as expected here
We've got Azure AD SSO 🤢
🤢
Yeah, it sucks. Every time I want to access the GitHub UI, I have to fuck around with another level of 2FA to get to org repos.
Those keys look great but wouldn't make it any easier for me
now to configure SSH key auth for my HA backup
That was for the iphone app. It just never asks for a key and logs right in with only a password.
Just ordered the new USB-C and NFC version, I know what I'll be setting up this weekend 😄
(selfhosted only)
noice
eirikz@kakuzu:~$ ssh git@github.com
PTY allocation request failed on channel 0
Hi atxbyea! You've successfully authenticated, but GitHub does not provide shell access.
Connection to github.com closed.
Did you do that with the yubikey as well, or just public key?
public key
it supports gpg key
so yubikey should be possible
but I will be running all my syncs from a system that I don't want to plug my yubikey into every time
Sounds annoying, though, as it will ask for that for every clone operation...
it did not
I have added the key to the ssh-agent, and it just uses it
or did you mean with a yubikey ?
yes it will
but that should be fine if it is on your workstation
I plug in my yubikey when I enter my office, and pull it when I leave
but you could use a key-manager and not have that problem

just recently discovered that my company has port 21 open, reported it and the answer was "yes but we also have port 22 open"
@dusky plank I was recently on a team dealing with infrastructure security issues and they "fixed" having a FTP site by putting in a DMZ outside the firewall
One of my clients basicaly sreamed at me why the fuck I'm not able to provide a simple ftp server.
as a thank you I showed him how to use scp via the comandline now.. poor guy
better than ftp via cli
scp is great
but I still see FTP used for a lot of on the go stuff, because of legacy systems
when you need access to map or geo data while on missions in iraq or surveying mountains in peru
and all you can find is a legacy windows 2000 machine
My place use FTP 😢
The funny bit... We don't want to but some of the banks we work with will only use FTP 😂
Banks, FFS. Financial data 🤦
well... the company i talked about also is into banking
mars rover lands today 🎉 🎊 🏁
one way or another
they lost that block 5 f9 booster the other day too
on its 6th launch
which is still 5 more launches than anything else out there 😛
more than anything out there except a couple sibling f9 boosters 😛
anyone gonna be tuned into the gamestop hearing? should be interesting
i hope they announce the dude by his reddit user name lol
mr deep fucking value
danke
People are still trying to suggest GME will rise again? 😂
long hold, sure
Really long...
It was flat before. It's been flat since.
the title they chose LOL
If it weren't for the Reddit shenanigans, it wouldn't have risen at all.
can't say that for sure
@clear ferry You've convinced me to join the Yubikey crowd. Ordering one right now after finding out it should work with Azure AD.
You're right, I can't. But what signs are there that it's going to do better in the future? It's a crappy physical store in a digital age.
a lot of people still like digital physical media
Still? We're all going digital.
lol oops
High street stores for stuff like games? They're relics already.
a lot of peopel still have a need to sell their old consoles
they have a lot of opportuniities still
Eh... that's the last place I'd go for a used console. I'd rather buy from personal ads.
They are closing physical shops and finding a new direction. What that direction will be is unknown but they do have brand name and some big names behind it
not really safe in certain ciities to do that
even more of a brand thanks to these shenanigans
Meh. They have a cult following now amongst the nerds on /r/wallstreetbets
with their new C-suite it's got huge potential
Ryan Cohen bought a large part of it last summer iirc which when the stock started moving up
also did some changes to the board etc
I'm not saying it has a legit future, but it has had more of a chance for one since then
im still in shock they never had a CTO lol
Because they still thought in terms of retail, not tech 🤷♂️
The largest home appliance store chain here bankrupted some years back. Somehow they never figured out how to properly move into online sales even though they had been doing post sales since before the Internet
Hard to see how a company like Gamestop failed to see the writing on the wall...
Somewhat same happened here as well with more or less same reasons, late on renewing, late from digitalization, too narrow customer base, outdated products,.. They were stepped over by all the competitors
Thanks btw for reminding about the rover landing, pretty much forgot it already its today.. Here's one link for lazy googlers: https://mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/timeline/landing/watch-online/
I know, sorry, that's not funny by any means, it might even not be offtopic should that rover run the thing we are not supposed to talk here 😄
this is the coolest shit i've seen all week
For plotting radio station locations on a globe? 🤔
tunes into different radio stations all around the world
station is unresponsive...
there will always be a place for physical releases of videogames
collectors and whatnot
lots of anger on this call it seems
Always? Lots of people in history have claimed things will be around forever. They're almost always wrong.
Maybe for another decade or two. Who knows what's going to be around after that?
paper is still around
and we thought it wouldnt be used as much with technology but pepole still buy it and print things, people still buy blank CDs and DVDs to burn stuff on
Last time I bought blank optical media must've been over 10 years ago...
lol same i still got that spindle somewhere 😛
I don't even have an optical drive now.
but i stil buy physical games
I would guess a lot of the people still printing things out on paper or buying CD's are older. A lot of us are used to digital media as the primary option now.
because you know you can resell them
you cant do that with digital which is a huge difference
especially with video games
Resale? I'm not bothered about the $2 I'd get.
depends on the game
if you buy a brand new game
taht normally sells used for $5 less than new
Paper is not going anywhere, but CDs are
you get more for that and if you only play for 20 hours and thats it and you buy on day one
thats like 1/2 off on another game
LP will outlast CDs
Only because the hipsters are buying it again.
They'll go on about audio quality and conveniently forget about FLAC.
Doesn't matter how or why but it's a fact
Well... it's your prediction. We'll see in a decade or two if it's fact.
They offer something that CDs don't which is why they'll have their niche market
CDs don't really offer anything that a DVD doesn't or even a USB stick
They offer the ability to take up way more space.
No, that's a fact. They take up more space 😉
I've been tempted to get a record player before but the space that the player and the record collection would take up is always the reason I back out.
Yeah there's something very nostalgic about having analog technology like that in the digital age
Trying to remember how many tracks I have on my PC. Think it's around 30k. I couldn't imagine having that much physical media.
I don't see that going away
Nostalgia will fade, especially as the people die off that think that era was nostalgic in the first place.
I don't imagine the schoolkids of today are going to grow up and want record players.
You could be right, but I'm not sure the hipsters you mentioned are nostalgic for that era because they lived it. I don't think most of them did
For them, nostalgia will be the current gen of tech. Smartphones you have to hold, instead of whatever crazy embedded chips we'll have in the future.
If you gave a CD to my kids they would not have a clue what to do with it, nevermind a record !!
Btw that reminds me that there was an excellent series on Bloomberg about Napster and the death of the physical media. Some real nostalgia shit seeing Napster/Kazaa etc and an all around excellent look into how the record industry failed to understand the future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHVRItc38-c
Watch Parts 2 & 3 here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqq4LnWs3olWZfE2J2rlb-vOq0c-U23nZ
The music world was forever changed when an American teenager named Shawn Fanning started Napster in his dorm room. In doing so, he triggered a momentous shift in how media is consumed everywhere.

Like this video? S...
yeah im gonna say physical media will always facilitate a need. especially in rural parts of the US let alone the world.
and for the sake of humanity it SHOULD still be around
making things digital only has alot of fuckery around it.
scaling it back? ok sure. i can concede to that, but outright elimination is a bit ambitious.
you can make the argument for physical media for archival purposes. CDs/DVDs are not the right medium though as those degrade rather quickly at rest
stuff is now blu-ray anyhow
same problem
but does it?
yup
i remember at its launch how blu-ray was "SOOOOO much better than dvd due to anti-scratch, longevity, etc."
there's a reason that most actual long term storage is using tape
sure, for consumer time-frames
"anti-scratch" lol
yeah i kinda laughed at that myself
"Blu-ray disc longevity is less set than DVD discs, likely because they’re newer and with the increase in digital media consumption beginning right after their popularity boom—are less studied. One study suggests at least 15 years with data retention up to 30 (if recorded). A separate study conducted by TUV Rheinland suggests that recordable BD-R can last up to 50 years if stored at 80C and at 80% relative humidity for 750 hours. Regardless, the suggested life span of a DVD and a Blu-ray disc is about the same."
15 years is pretty damn good
but not when you're talking for archival purposes
but idk seems real world testing is kinda meh
it always is
nods
consumer level, that's more than enough
things like betabound are a good path forward though for real world testing
i guess the question is, if 15 years isnt sufficient, what is?
tape
tape isnt years
you sure about that?
-_-
lol
hundreds of years sounds good
nods
They should make storage on the plastic from the sea. That stuff will be around forever...
i mean the medium should be checked for data rot after a set amount of time right?
30 years of shelf life with 250 uses per year
for ~6.2T of storage per tape
the idea that tapes can just be thrown in a vault and forgotten about is a bit misleading, because the same would have to be done with optical media as well.
but shrugs tapes are superior.
but the storage density and shelf life of those tapes are both better than a BR
looks to be about double yeah.
~double the life but a lot smaller on the shelf
dual layer BR is only 50G right?
"only" we're quite spoiled these days
I miss floppy disks...
In what way?
10" floppy or no deal
They were pocket sized. They had write protection. They made cool tunes when you read them.
Ok, 10" weren't pocket sized 😄
make floppy disks floppy again
phnx is showing his age here...
lol nah
I agree mono, good arguement
My school's computer lab had Windows 3.1.
We had 5,25 inch and 3,5 ones
those were already gone by my time. 5.25" were a thing though
1,44MB
click of death!
im sure as a raccoon you keep on finding them in the trash yeah?
Not as many as I would expect
lol
thx for taking my sleep
I love doormats
Well they taste better than IKEA meatballs...
You would be surprised actually
I would rate ikea meatballs at 5/10 and doormats at 4/10
Semi back to normal chat
Is it normal to go back and forth when putting bids on houses :P
Went to look at one today, think it is good, just such a huge descision
I dunno. I've been pretty decisive each time we've moved.
Wow. Your housing market is mad.
I don't know how many other people made an offer on this place. We didn't have to queue to see it though 😄
one mistake i already made
if yer seriously looking into a house
get 1. general home inspector
2.electrical inspector
- plumber inspection
i only did #1
and boy were there some extra costs there i wasnt expecting
just living in my first year, add about $20k in electrical/plumbing
@last cedar
Y'all and your rules
IT'S HAPPENING
Watch an epic journey unfold on Thursday, Feb. 18 as our Perseverance rover lands on Mars. To reach the surface of the Red Planet, the rover has to survive the harrowing final phase known as Entry, Descent, and Landing.
Only then can the rover – the biggest, heaviest, cleanest, and most sophisticated six-wheeled robot ever launched into space ...
Who is that pack even for? One person doesn't need 5 different ones. 5 different people in the same org probably want the same ones.
It's a marketing pack.
How long until it goes boom? 😄
15 minutes... I'll come back in 14.
So you'd buy a pair of a specific model, right? Not a tray with 5 different ones.
Well, could be two different ones
Well I've only ordered one... so if I lose it, I'm fucked 😄
Went for the 5C NFC.
5.4km/s? 🤯
The times along the top of the feed... one's 11 minutes out, is that the comms delay?
So... it could've already crashed? 😄
1km/s
🐢
This is mind boggling
It already exploded 🤷♂️
What must the Martians be thinking
Meanwhile, they're all just playing Kerbal instead of working.
The forums.
But we're busy talking spaceships, so please keep HA questions to #general-archived 😉
Science
I love some of the names for the steps. 'detumble'
only spaceships .. ok
when in doubt, blame @clear ferry
Our souls are totally weighed down by gravity
🤩 its done
Touchdown apparently
gg EZ
Now they get to spend weeks figuring out why the various attachments don't work as intended 😄
People asking in the comments if the rover has a name. They're watching a stream where the title is the name 🤔
first image has the quality of my door cam... 30x45 pixels
did they name the drone?
I think it was Droney McDroneface.
Higher res photos promised later
mars HDR
Well, good luck, rover
the drone's called Ingenuity apparently
Please don't unearth any proto-molecule or similar, k tnx
@bitter pawn gonna redo all electrics basically anyway so no worries there
Plumbing sounds like a good idea, need to run radiator water to garage anyway
some houses dont have a water main shut off
we are looking to get one installed so if there is a burst pipe we can shut it down immediately
people dont think about this stuff until after the fact -_-
like myself
@last cedar
There is. Planning to setup a servo and water detection to turn off in emergency
Some crucial areas monitored for leakage
Most of electrics are not earthed, so want to do that asap. Also want to prepare for solar in the future and also electric car charging
Same here - one indoors and out outdoors
indoor and outdoor, but outdoor only someone from the city is allowed to use
This has both its own water supply and the municipalites own
As well as municipalities waste water
You just need the "key" to use the outdoor one here - and you can buy those at any decent DIY store
Anyone can use the outdoor here, if you have a screwdriver to lift the lid
Yeah, we're not restricted in using them, other than physically
Not restricted apart from it being restricted. Got it 🦝
Well, if you can't manage a screwdriver and a pole, you shouldn't be turning things on and off 😛
@clever mortar is what what person #2 says?
Raccoon thumbs make excellent screwdrivers
afaik there's a big fine if you touch the outdoor one here without the city involved, even though ostensibly it's just like a recessed square bolt
Just like how when people lock doors, you're not really restricted from going in their homes.
Just need a 'key'.
or a rock
Or a cat flap
Or a raccoon
If you are smol
We didn't even lock doors until.... Probably 2004-5
Yes
I need to replace my indoor valve (it's a 70 year old gate valve) and it's a pain in the ass because I need to coordinate a plumber and the city together
It was me dio that shut off your water
Nah but, looks good. Really should put in a bid tommorow
I dropped the ball on the bank though, then they dropped the ball with making process quick, so kind of in a grey area above asking price on house, until I get a number from bank
Garage is 11m long tho. Like damn
Will be enough to park my car
And my trolley
awwwwwww
But yeah, it's tough being a stickler for due diligence when the market is hawt
Market is dead atm in Sweden. Prices have soared and rich people buying cheap houses at a faster rate than people dying
So choice in my price bracket is basically non existant
I have to look at houses 30km or more from work
Can't afford to live closer
Exactly, so you feel like you have to cut corners in the hopes of getting in a bid while no-one is looking
Indeed
There is nothing wrong with the house, but I know asking price is close to my budgets ceiling, but is a lot of house
Heat pump is probably about dead though, won't be cheap to replace, it is a geothermal pump, 16 years old
As long as the expected renovations aren't too bad
most utilities will give a pretty sizable refund on updating
"rebate"
whatever you want to call it
It looks in good condition, just very dated
and there may be a tax credit too
Needs full alarm and network running, and electrics redoing too, as I said
Lots of rooms need paint and it would be nice to have the same floor through out, now it is a shambles of different flooding
yeah, we skipped inspection clause to be able to nab our house in a hot market - we did have a pre-sale inspection that was recent enough that we didn't mind, but still, the inspection clause allows you to bow out
I realy enjoy the series The Magicians It gets even better when I'm getting super tired
I enjoyed the first season but I think it was just the novelty of it. Got bored pretty quick after that.
swallow this to get super magic, swalloing got his benefits
@clear ferry must have allll the magic now
I am too in the market for a new house @last cedar but no raccoons please
Stop throwing so much trash out then@clear ferry
Hoarder you say
You want some Itanium CPUs?
Can you be more specific
I think I have room in the corner of my container for some itanium cpus
Don't you have a working machine for them btw?
Oldest I have is like 1366
An RX3600 that has been sitting in my garage for 5 years
And a RX4640 that has been there for 11
Garage? That is where a car lives
And a BL860c i2
Not old servers

Crab your crucifix? wtf?
so my wife's job gave her a Dell laser printer that's pretty asstastic
it won't default to taking whatever's in the manual feeder if there's something in the feeder
if you want to print on different paper you have to explicitly tell it to use the manual feeder
WTF
lol our canon is like that
if you put something in the manual feeder it will gripe till you not only tell it what is in there but also set that to be the feeder to be used and whats even worse. if you take the paper out of the manual feeder for even a nano second then you have to redo it all over again
Building new server; need hard drives. What do y'all think are best? (please @ me or thread so I get the reply, thanks!)
@pearl wind to do what? Boot from, vm storage, data archive?
I was thinking mainly vm's and stuff, but I ended up choosing 3x WD Blues for now since cost
Ooof, ssds? Endurance on the blue drives isn't huge
Hi @proper gorge I'd appreciate you not sending me random invitations to discord with no explanation or context. I have DM turned on to help people out, not for spam. Cheers Ben
@last cedar SSDs will work fine for VM storage (NVMe drives work significantly better than SATA drives, though)
Where you get into trouble is trying to use a cheap SSD for cache, or SLOG
good day/night/whatever
I have two blues, and even as a striped pair, they're pretty clunky. Even a trickle of data keeps their activity high, while the same stream to my nvme is hardly even noticeable. Good for cheap storage, but definitely not great for anything high traffic.
@subtle pasture fair enough! I try and use high endurance stuff everywhere now
Yeah, getting harder and harder to find MLC drives though...
Everything is moving to TLC
won`t mention the 16 enterprise sata SSDs that are just sitting in my garage
That's... weird... never seen an enterprise-class SATA SSD
They've all been SAS or U.2
SATA kinda sucks for SSDs. Only a single disk queue, and limited to 6gbps
That is half of them, these are mixed use ones if memory serves right, the other ones are write intensive
Or the other way around
Woof, just looked up the price for part# P21090

$900 for a 2TB SSD... and it's fucking TLC?
You'd like the list price for the 3PAR SSDs, 32TB was $70k last I checked
Unrelated: Wound up with two of these smart mugs
My coffee mug needed a firmware update. The future is stupid...
haha, what's the smart thing with them?
Temperature-controlled. You can set a specific temperature and it'll hold it
It also shoots a notification to your phone when the drink has warmed or cooled to your desired temperature
that's nice... I'd go for one.. .always forgets my coffee and it goes cold
love it
Why not just buy an insulated one?
It's a crime that the firmware updates weren't called "cupdates"
@clever mortar An insulated mug won't hold exactly 60c for the entire duration of the beverage
😆
it also won't notify you when the drink is nolonger scalding 😛
Insulated mugs also don't allow the temperature to freefall before leveling off, so you'll have to wait longer to start drinking
I found https://www.joulies.com/ plus insulated cup meant I could have a cup of coffee that was at a drinkable temperature for hours - 4 or so 😄
This might be one of the most unnecessary smart things I feel I need
@celest gazelle It's at the crossroads of "ridiculous and unnecessary" and "I'm actually kinda enjoying it, tbh..."
exactly
Which is why I bought one for me and one for the girlfriend, for valentines day. lol
and also served with a premium pricetag
haha
best ever
noticed the travelmug looks nice
Yeah, I dig the travel mug. It also has controls right on the unit, so you don't need the phone app to adjust the mug's setpoint
it's also even more expensive :x
so i noticed
Weird experience: I'm on the last 1/2" of liquid in my mug, and it's still steaming...
I haven't actually checked if it integrates with HA at all
It's bluetooth, so... maybe?
You going to trigger automations based on coffee consumption?
maybe... this would annoy so many.. I feel the uge to get one
You haven't had enough coffee today, go make another cup
It actually knows when the mug reaches empty, so if it does integrate with HA.. you could actually trigger an automation as soon as your cup is empty
would be nice to see the ammount of liquid left in the mug....
mmm see now it's a must havve
My insulated cup (that I get a new one every year after filling 1000l of fuel) holds my coffee hot for 3-4 hours
That'll do donkey
Also, free refills all year
The issue I've always had with insulated mugs is my coffee stays scalding hot for the first 1 to 2 hours...
I'd like to be able to, you know... drink it
but it has no firmware...
I usually hit 1000l of fuel after a couple of months 🐔
@subtle pasture if you are a cool mouth, just leave the lid open for 15 minutes, problem solved
Or whatever temperature you prefer
I just drank tea at 60c, not exactly a cool mouth. lol
That feel when it's implied you have a hot mouth XD
haha
what
No u what
Hillarious!!!
ok I‘ll see myself out
It was good
@green inlet
see that.. atx wants to be an american
Playing with your flagpole at your desk. Tut tut.
😂
If i wanted to get a home assistant blue - is there anywhere in stock? it seems the only place in the US is ameridroid and they are shipping april
#330990055533576204 maybe knows, but tbh you are better off with a small nuc or an old laptop in that price range
i was looking at nucs, but they are all more expensive?
depends on what market you are in, I think @subtle pasture said the US NUC prices were def better
gotcha. most of the stuff I see is $250 at the super low end and $400 more often
haha, interesting.
there was a discussion a while back, I linked it there
But I'm not the right person to ask, I run some stuff in my 42U rack in the garage

haha. yeah, if i had the room i'd prob do somethign a little diff.
Hey, second hand NUC/laptop from the last decade will be cheaper, and perform better 😄
I run HA on a 7 to 8 year old i5 laptop - built in UPS 😛
i don't mind spending $250 or something if it will last a long time. i just want something reliable and small and quiet
I run HA on a 24c\128G\512GSSD system with 10G ethernet
😄
Anything is more reliable than a Odroid or a raspberry pi though
yeah, i am on pi4 now, which I bought to test out ha, then fell in love, and now a 30+ devices later.. i'd like my hardware to stop crashing every now and again
lol. is that what you would like me to move to to discuss this? will that be my new install method?
Control
Flexibility
Power
i use node red for a ton.
With Container you run what you want, upgrade when you want, downgrade if you want to

is there a guide i can read that will help figure out what it will look like? i am reading the installation on /nuc and looking at container
but like.. what os and docker setup would you point me to?
Debian
compose
what is compose?
The best thing to happen to docker since docker.
i'll look at debian and docker and container this weekend.
Basically, it's a great management tool.
It lets you easily configure networks of communicating containers.
which i will need to run node-red.. that is my primary add-on
"docker-compose" technically
i am on the compose section of the docker docs now
technically i'm also running hacs
I should start using secrets, so I can push my docker compose to github
Exactly. You'll put Home Assistant and NR in the same compose file, and they'll work together in one neat package.
i assume i will have to start fresh to do this? can't use my current install since I am on os now?
i guess i can import all my node red configs into node red
@clear ferry do you even know how to use source control
You can probably just transfer over your /config directory från OS to docker.
Git gud
interesting. i'll def look at it.
And compose gives you so many options on how to do this too...
haha. me too. i do have a job i'm supposed to be doing right now
and now apparently the previous job I was offered is on the table again, so I have two job offers in reality
I need to nag some people
But will any of them let you travel to new and exciting places, like Karlskrona?
Well, atleast two of them 🤔 my current one of the others
well, if i'm going to do use debian and docker, i can just grab an old pc from work and replace the hdd....
@sweet warren yup
mostly anything from the last 10 years will be good, unless it is an atom
😄
haha. good to know. that does help. thanks everyone. i wish i had a better place to put this in my home... right now it is going into a cabinet because i am in an apartment for a year. buying a house soon though.
4 is impossible to say without sounding sarcastic
You're just not trying hard enough
