I just considered that I can probably use any job offer I get now as leverage to my current manager to keep me in my current job ๐Ÿค”

I know one guy who has tasted it, he said it was ok, but nothing special, and he was a guy with three different coffee machines in his office

Except for outlets with built in bucks, don't think I've ever seen DC in walls

i find it always funny when components that should increase security actually decrease security at some point in time... anti virus and such are a great example. always.

#

last week or so a vuln in windows defender made me chuckle and in November Eset decided to flag the (slmgr.VBS!) script that does the licensing stuff as malicious. i mean they weren't totally wrong there... the same guys fucked up their management agent leaving a gaping hole but this seems good practice now. i think every anti virus vendor has had this kind of vulnerability...

night zodiac

he bullied me into installing cable baskets that were doing just fine in their box

You still have to mount that AP in the ceiling.

he tried to bully me into buying a fake currency one time, i just chuckled

I have an AP on both sides of the house

@forest edge if you did, you won't be waiting for aliexpress now ๐Ÿ˜†

Well you'd be stupid to buy at the moment. It will crash eventually.

#

Just gotta wait for the peak. The reddit kids can't keep up their antics forever.

forest edge
#

do Chinese companies check american customers on if they are gullible enough to invest in digital code and if so they expedite shipping to in attempt to get more out of those suckers?

forest edge
#

exactly

tidal bronze
#

@deft pewter true but still enough wave to ride it ๐Ÿ˜‰

deft pewter
#

It's kinda messed up that the hedge fund guys are finally pro-regulation but only cos some nerds are kicking their ass.

tidal bronze
#

Exactly

forest edge
#

the whole thing has always been a mess imo

deft pewter
#

Just saw that RobinHood have blocked $GME trades... hedge fund guys are still allowed to continue.

#

Either it's a free market or it's not. This is proving it's the latter.

#

Gotta be the 'right kind' of investor...

forest edge
#

we need to go back to the old days where people paid with gold coins and there were no stocks or crap like that

deft pewter
#

A barter economy? Maybe.

forest edge
#

atleast it would be more equal

deft pewter
#

I doubt it'd be equal...

forest edge
#

with no kings or anything it would be pretty fair

deft pewter
#

Someone will still end up with a bigger pile of gold coins.

forest edge
#

maybe but they can't buy extended life

deft pewter
#

Course they can. Better quality of life usually translates to longer life.

forest edge
#

and if you ever had to deal with tangible shit left over from the previous generation you know damn well shit gets lost or stolen lol

#

you think switching now would somehow turn us back to dying of old age at 30?

deft pewter
#

No-one said that. But having a barter economy doesn't put everyone on a level footing.

#

Medieval times were basically barter economies... and the whole thing was still basically a fiefdom.

#

There's always going to be an underclass, unfortunately.

forest edge
#

it makes having real skill more profitable, and noway to "cheat" some system to gain more

deft pewter
#

No way to cheat? You employ people and you pay them less than their labour is worth, while skimming the rest off the top.

#

It's a proven system that's been around for millenia.

#

Way before stock markets ๐Ÿ˜‰

forest edge
#

ehh, going from this to that is way diffrent than going from that to this

tidal bronze
#

I don't think so.

forest edge
#

I know so, people are way more educated now

#

just because they don't come to this discord tinkerer lol

deft pewter
#

There's no difference. Most things can be viewed as hierarchies. Usually pyramid-shaped hierarchies. You get a few rich and powerful people at the time and masses of poor people at the bottom.

#

That's never been any different.

clever mortar
#

"Educated" .... right that explains the stack of conspiracy theorists... the folks that won't get vaccines because they cause autism/allow the gov to track you...

deft pewter
#

Sure, QoL for those at the bottom has improved over time... but the disparity between top and bottom has always been there.

forest edge
#

we're talking majority

#

last i checked those people were not the majority

#

thus they don't exactly set the line

deft pewter
#

I dunno. They're not 60IQ folk. They're 'educated' in the sense they made it through high school, work regular jobs, live regular lives.

#

They're not outliers.

#

Or rather, their education level doesn't make them outliers, only their ideals do.

clever mortar
#

I've known a lot of people who're happy to settle for "just enough". They don't want more

forest edge
#

seems to me that people have gotten alot better pointing out the wrong in shit that has been the norm for quite awhile now.. don't see it somehow "reverting" after a change

forest edge
#

if your talking salary

clever mortar
#

More than just that

#

But... that's people for you

forest edge
#

there are people who do not want to be rich

clever mortar
#

Some people want/don't want money/power/whatever

forest edge
#

correct

clever mortar
#

Which ... leads to "inequality" ๐Ÿ˜‰

deft pewter
#

Some people lack ambition. But that's okay because it leaves more room for those that have it.

forest edge
#

choosen

clever mortar
#

Something like that ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

wealth isn't just currency

deft pewter
#

It's why I personally believe that equal opportunity is a better goal than equality/equity. We should all be given the same chances. Whether we choose to embrace them is up to individuals.

forest edge
#

so if someone chooses not to get paid more, they are doing it cause they are happier without

deft pewter
#

We don't all go through life wanting to be cookie cutter versions of each other. Being equals would be boring.

I'm paid.... a lot more than I used to be. I can afford nicer things. It has made zero difference to how happy/unhappy I am

deft pewter
#

If it's not making you happier, you can send some my way ๐Ÿ˜‰

forest edge
#

in a barter economy

deft pewter
#

In your ideal world, how are you even considering the neighbour as 'rich' if they have nothing?

#

Keep it consistent.

#

They must have something that means they're considered more wealthy. Maybe other assets with value considered greater than that of food itself.

#

They might be the only doctor in the village, in which case their skills are worth more than a field of potatoes.

forest edge
#

if we're talking tangible money only, a son could inherit wealth

deft pewter
#

I'm sure in a barter economy, I could sell my skills as a doctor to get a free meal any time I wanted to.

forest edge
#

without having anything that made said money

deft pewter
#

But that's no different to today's economy. Inheritance today is digital, you're just talking about coins.

#

How money is represented is irrelevant. Money is still money. You still have a number of dollars.

#

I thought we were talking about getting away from trading futures and other intangible assets?

forest edge
#

well the convo got branched because tink thinks someone is screwed in thje head if they don't strive toi always get paid more or something lolk

deft pewter
#

He didn't say that at all. He said not everyone wants to earn more.

forest edge
#

it went from low iq people to earn just enough, I misunderstood I guess

tidal bronze
deft pewter
#

I made the comment about low IQ as a rebuke to your claim that conspiracy theorists are uneducated.

#

Because they're functioning individuals with crazy ideas, not some mentally disabled people that can't form thoughts.

#

Anybody here who can speak from experience about deciding between AWS and places like Linode?

#

for a tiny little server with a few static pages

clear ferry
#

I'm aws certified, does that make me biased?

molten osprey
#

Probably ๐Ÿ™‚

clear ferry
#

All my friends who works with azure say they wish they had gone with aws though

molten osprey
#

I have been with DreamHost for eons. I have a shared hosting account there and a dozen or so domain names, most an empty site and some with email (most email points to Google from back when their "Apps" accounts were free).

#

A friend suggested I rent a $5 server from Linode and stick my stuff on there.

clear ferry
#

Never touched or know anyone who uses it, so no idea

molten osprey
#

I've had an aws instance to play with in the past, but their pricing is confusing

#

I'm guessing you did not get certified to dabble with $5 per month servers though, so perhaps not your area of expertise ๐Ÿ˜„

clear ferry
#

Consumers usually aren't no

molten osprey
#

Can I use "EBS" as the root-fs of an ec2 instance? I'm guessing no.

deft pewter
#

You can do quite a lot on AWS for free if you don't need much compute.

molten osprey
#

It doesn't look like the storage is free?

deft pewter
#

If you're talking about static sites, don't bother spinning up an EC2, just host out of S3.

#

You'll pay pennies per month.

molten osprey
#

I'd prefer to have this ec2 instance. Perhaps I'll learn a thing or two.

deft pewter
#

The attached storage on the smallest EC2s is free, I think. But you talking tiny things like t2-micro that can barely do anything

#

Seriously, if it's a static site, EC2 is absolutely the wrong approach. Wrong took for the job and way more expensive for the capabilities you care about.

molten osprey
#

I also need to host mail

deft pewter
#

Which doesn't need an EC2...

#

AWS WorkMail

molten osprey
#

I guess I could just forward those two domains to one of my Google Apps accounts

deft pewter
#

And for the occasional compute tasks, learn to use AWS Lambda.

#

Most people don't need provisioned servers but don't realise there are better alternatives.

molten osprey
#

DNS for a dozen or so domains?

#

1 zone = 1 domain, right?

#

so $0.50 per domain per month, so 17 domains would cost me $8.50 just for the DNS

clear ferry
#

17 domains

#

Look at Mr Nigeria mail over here

molten osprey
#

Haha

molten osprey
#

Most are for a friend who keeps coming up with new brands for his fashion biz

deft pewter
#

Yes, hosted zones add up quickly. Just bill your clients for them

molten osprey
#

I have no clients ๐Ÿ™‚

#

DreamHost charges me $10.95 per month, unlimited domains

deft pewter
#

Your friend seems to be costing you money for services you provide. He's a client, he's just not paying you.

molten osprey
#

Fair enough ๐Ÿ™‚

clear ferry

Omg

deft pewter
#

Dreamhost rip you off in hosting fees instead

clear ferry
#

I just for the first time in my life zoomed in on your picture@deft pewter

#

I thought it was a disturbing teletubbie

#

It was not

molten osprey
#

The $10.95 is shared hosting for unlimited domains, web hosting, mail hosting.

#

It isnโ€™t high performance, of course. But I donโ€™t have any real need for that.

deft pewter
#

Unlimited storage and bandwidth?

molten osprey
#

Yep

#

Well, within reason Iโ€™m guessing.

#

But Iโ€™ve never hit limits.

deft pewter
#

So you'd need to hit 22 domains on AWS for it to cost more there.

#

Check out the costs for S3. It's almost free unless you're moving GBs around all the time

molten osprey
#

I didnโ€™t know I could host sites on s3. Will have to have a look at that.

deft pewter
#

It was one of my first suggestions

#

There's a little bit of work to do with getting HTTPS set up but it's still fairly easy. I'll dig out a link later when I'm not on mobile.

molten osprey
odd kindle
#

@molten osprey for tiny stuff always pick a vps over aws / gcp / et.al. is my opinion

molten osprey

I think I might give this a try with one of the parked domains, see if I can get it up and running.

odd kindle
#

honestly, for really tiny things don't even do vps

clear ferry
#

VPS ๐Ÿคข what is this? The 2000s?

molten osprey
#

@odd kindle I have a shared hosting account.

odd kindle
#

then honestly stay with that unless you need something more. Or if you just want to do more

#

but anything else will mean more work, probably without any real benefits

molten osprey
#

The benefit would be โ€œoooohhh tinkeringโ€ ๐Ÿ˜‰

odd kindle
#

exactly, if you're after that then by all means go k8s, but expect it to be a lot of work and result in a lot more downtime than you have right now

molten osprey
#

Well, it sounds like AWS is worth at least exploring the S3 / Route 53 option.

deft pewter
#

Or... AWS for all the tinkering and minimal downtime.

molten osprey
#

No ec2 instance.

odd kindle
#

If you're just after static hosting you can do free static hosting on cloudflare or github or any number of other solutions that, imho, is far simpler than s3

molten osprey
#

The last time I managed a web server was in 1997 for worldonline.nl where I worked at the time. I bet nothing has changed! ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

(That was an ISP)

odd kindle
#

but again, it comes back to wanting to tinker vs just wanting a simple / cost-effective solution

deft pewter
#

Ah... GitHub Pages. The most professional and flexible solution around.

odd kindle
#

depending on what you're after github pages IS by far the best solution.

#

trying to get people to use more advanced / complex solutions just for the sake of it is just wrong. Now if you're after the tinkering, if that is the goal then definitly go aws / gcp

molten osprey
#

Whatโ€™s gcp?

deft pewter
#

Google Cloud Platform (or something)

#

Basically Google's answer to AWS.

molten osprey
#

Oh right

deft pewter
#

Since rob's already said he also wants mail as part of whatever platform he goes for, can we please stop shilling GH Pages?

#

Either stick with DreamHosting or move to AWS/GCP/Azure. I'd recommend AWS.

#

Massive platform, great variety of tools that all work with each other, huge community and amazing documentation.

molten osprey
#

Iโ€™m going to check out AWSโ€™ non-ec2 approach.

deft pewter
#

GCP is probably close and Azure is a bit newer to the game.

odd kindle
#

from what I read he was using google apps for the email, I would have just used that. But I'm out not going to argue this

deft pewter
odd kindle
#

@molten osprey Go with what you want, but realize that this is a very elitist channel and people will recommend the "coolest" not the most suited solution.

deft pewter
#

If you end up migrating all 17 domains across, you probably don't want to do that manually 17 times. AWS has another service called CloudFormation that lets you define an application stack in code and have AWS go deploy/update the stack.

#

There's nothing elitist about recommending flexible toolsets.

#

Cloud-native tools aren't only popular amongst big businesses. They're great for hobbyists too.

clear ferry
#

Mmmm uptime, very elitist JodieScronch

deft pewter
#

Their API surfaces are amazing too. I have my GitHub repo hooked into AWS via GitHub Actions. There's almost nothing you can't do via the CLI or SDK.

#

At the end of the day, it's going to come down to someone wanting a bundled solution or waiting a tailored solution. You could shop around forever to find a bundle that suits your exact needs... or you could build it yourself on a cloud platform. There's just a learning curve involved.

molten osprey
#

Is CloudFront an AWS service too?

deft pewter
#

Everything I've mentioned is

#

There are something like 300 AWS services but you'll never even look at most of them.

molten osprey
#

@odd kindle appreciate the comments, but am going to give it a try because itโ€™ll give me an insight into AWS. Iโ€™m not in IT anymore but a nerd at heart and I marvel at how AWS is set up.

molten osprey

@deft pewter I have 1 wordpress site. What would be the solution for that?

#

Donโ€™t stay โ€œreplace Wordpressโ€ ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

Hehe

deft pewter
#

That'll probably want a provisioned server. I'm not 100% sure since I stay away from WordPress ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

Google will know

#

Can it run out of a docker container? Might be able to spin up a docker host for less expense than a full EC2

molten osprey
#

Ec2 is free, for a small instance. That Wordpress site gets virtually no traffic so Iโ€™m sure something simple would suffice?

deft pewter
#

Yeah, that might do the trick. Can you replicate it there for testing before turning off the old one?

molten osprey
#

Maybe? WP used to be a bit annoying when moving around. But I can try.

deft pewter

t2.micro have barely any compute power, so I'm not sure how PHP will hold up. Might be sluggish

hushed basalt

odd kindle
#

You seem so be missing the fact that your fuckups also count towards uptime. Aws allows for much more fuckups

deft pewter

You can fuck up on any platform...

#

It's okay, rob. Stay on DreamHosting. You're not allowed to explore other services in case you fuck up.

molten osprey
#

๐Ÿ˜”

#

Lightsail looks interesting too

deft pewter
#

Loads of cloud native services are interesting. The hard part is picking the right services.

odd kindle
#

You can fuck up in all services but the more moving part you have the more likely it is to do so. And again, not saying you shouldnโ€™t. But when estimating uptime you should take all aspects into account

deft pewter
#

I'm no expert but I'm happy to offer my experience, rob.

hushed basalt
#

Even if he did want to rearchitect to static sites netlify would be a way better option

molten osprey
#

It does DNS mgmt too

deft pewter
#

And the emails? And the possibility to add in sections of compute?

#

If you only have one or two endpoints that need compute, AWS will let you bind a couple of Lambdas to your API. How do you handle that with static-only platforms?

molten osprey
#

Looks like Lightsails DNS mgmt even letโ€™s you point to S3-hosted sites.

deft pewter
#

Route53 on its own is a massive selling point. I have my main domains out on the web but can dynamically point subdomains at local services behind a dynamic IP

hushed basalt
molten osprey

tawny orchid

I have some experience with AWS, I run a tiny EC2 to have my own dns server out there. It's not that easy indeed.,

hushed basalt

Aws doesn't hold your hand, their customer base is people using their infrastructure at a higher level

molten osprey
#

Iโ€™m going to try it. If it ends up being too much of a challenge, Iโ€™ll just change DNS back to DreamHost. No harm in giving it a shot.

hushed basalt
#

Places like netlify exist because aws doesn't care about small scale

deft pewter
#

I love AWS because it keeps everything in one platform. That's not going to be everyone's priority. I've got a blog hosted via static S3. I've got bots running as scheduled lambdas. There's almost no limit to what you can do, you just have to find the 'right way' to do it.

molten osprey
deft pewter
molten osprey
#

I run one at home (two, actually), but nothing public.

hushed basalt

If you want a developer friendly VPS digital ocean is great

deft pewter

Netlify exists because people want an easy-to-use solution that just works out of the box, not because it's 'better for small scale'.

odd kindle

I mean, I'm not saying aws is bad. I was part of running a multi-continent aws setup that costs $10ks/a month. It's very good. But it's also complex

hushed basalt
#

That's exactly what people st small scale want

tawny orchid
deft pewter
#

But that's not because of the scale, it's just an overlap between what they're hosting and their IT skills.

odd kindle
#

I'm with @hushed basalt here. It IS better at a small scale

deft pewter
#

This is like when people confuse causation and correlation ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

molten osprey
deft pewter
#

The strengths of platforms like Netlify are that you can just push a button. It's not that they're 'better for small scale'.

tawny orchid

You just happen to have more small scale businesses using them because they don't have architects to plan out a fancy ass AWS app.

molten osprey

#

You're quite welcome

molten osprey
#

Evening here so best not get behind my computer right now and start digging into this. But I will have a go at this tomorrow morning.

tawny orchid
#

and thanks too, It looks like except dynamic updates ( which I don't use much) route53 could be something for me

deft pewter
#

You mean DDNS?

#

Run that locally to deploy an API Gateway-fronted Lambda function that updates your Route53 CNAMEs

#

I only started using it recently on Tinkerer's recommendation but it's been smooth.

#

CNAME/A/whatever. I always forget the types.

#

Once it's running, you just set up ddclient on your server to occasionally check for changed external IP addresses and call into your Lambda.

tawny orchid
#

no, not ddns, but that does look sweet! instead of using dyndns hmmm

#

and what I meant is clients that update the records with their IP's, as I'm lazy and don't want to type over ipv6 records

deft pewter
tawny orchid
#

maybe... ddns usualy is used to register your outside ipv4 address, but I'm talking inside addresses of host. and like I said, not using it much at the moment, or at all, I think I broke something a while back

#

I guess route53 is cheaper then ec2. still reading about it, I wonder if it also allows non amazon dns as secundaries

deft pewter
#

It all comes down to how many domains you'll manage, I guess. As rob pointed out, it's something like 50c/month per hosted zone (unlimited subdomains/records per zone).

#

I only manage two zones right now, so I'm not worried about the cost. WorkMail probably costs more than all my other apps combined... that's not cheap ๐Ÿ˜„

#

But based on the name, you know they're pitching it at businesses.

molten osprey

consoles are just bad anymore

I mean a subscription to play online, $70+ games and the peripherals cost as much if not more

it's a bad taste in everyone's mouth

Ps4 was my last one and no more. ppl shouldn't have to pay extra to play other people

hello, i have reverse engineered the protocol for my bluetooth deadbolt locks (a popular model not currently supported by home assistant), and i would like to ask some questions about responsibly publishing my code. eventually i plan to make a home assistant integration that uses my code. i was hoping that someone here might have some interest/suggestions for me, but i'm not sure of the best channel to ask in. thanks in advance!

Hey all, probably not right channel, but is there a specific HA installation that is best? Like, using a flashed SD card with the OS, or running a VM, or..?

forest edge

@velvet surge no "best" only opinions which vary

velvet surge

My understanding is that the SD card approach is not the best due to them failing. Which is totally what just happened to me yesterday.

yea but your not stuck running the os on an sd card

sd card was just what it was because for quite some time devices like the rpi4 couldn't boot from usb etc

Hi,

I wonder if somebody could help me.

I would be interested on matrix notification in HA. There is a new SDK matrix-nio which can do end2end encryption and much. The problem is I'm not very familiar with asyncio... Do anybody know the author of the matrix notification integration?

Second I have a custom integration for RPI's PiFace digital2 extension to handle more than one of these. It works and I was not able (mainly because time) to make it backward compatible with the old implementation and so it was not merged into HA core.

Third I would like to read these channels with my matrix client. I created a bot in discord for it and I just learned that I need to send a link to GUILD's admin to give access to this bot GUILD wide. Could this be possible? ๐Ÿ˜‰
