I just considered that I can probably use any job offer I get now as leverage to my current manager to keep me in my current job ๐ค
since I am the only one who works with more than a dozen products
she'll want to keep me
Just order some Kopi Luwak @night zodiac
Apparently it tastes like shit
oh
I know one guy who has tasted it, he said it was ok, but nothing special, and he was a guy with three different coffee machines in his office
you and your feeble 110v
we do not
Except for outlets with built in bucks, don't think I've ever seen DC in walls
I think some countries have it from what I have read in this chat
Only place I've ever seen pure DC is in japanese datacenters
someone probably lied to me
@tidal bronze has distributed DC in his hoose
well fuck
he is a weirdo though
when googling, I found a random fact. Apparently in the USA back in the 60s and such, a lot of power plants were DC but they are all gone now
wouldn't be hard to do but is it sane? nope
inb4 elephant electrocution
question is, did you install a separate (doorbell) transformer for it or just branch off the existing one
doorbell is AC

@last dirge can't get enough of WSB stuff on news ๐
you can have mine
someone has recently started pm'ing me memes about the WSB shit for some reason. I have no idea why.
Funniest shit.

you guys already updated your sudo binary?
https://blog.qualys.com/vulnerabilities-research/2021/01/26/cve-2021-3156-heap-based-buffer-overflow-in-sudo-baron-samedit
yup.
Meh, what's one more vulnerability if you've already got a bucket load of them ๐
i find it always funny when components that should increase security actually decrease security at some point in time... anti virus and such are a great example. always.
last week or so a vuln in windows defender made me chuckle and in November Eset decided to flag the (slmgr.VBS!) script that does the licensing stuff as malicious. i mean they weren't totally wrong there... the same guys fucked up their management agent leaving a gaping hole but this seems good practice now. i think every anti virus vendor has had this kind of vulnerability...
nap time. coffee didn't make it in time
yea @tidal bronze can have that effect on people
he bullied me into installing cable baskets that were doing just fine in their box
in the ceiling? pfft
Or are you going for range and not coverage
he tried to bully me into buying a fake currency one time, i just chuckled
I have an AP on both sides of the house
Who needs fake currencies? Just short $GME.
@forest edge if you did, you won't be waiting for aliexpress now ๐
my aliexpress order says forwarded
not sure how that would speed up chinese shipping lol
hopefully that means to me
@deft pewter short? lol
Well you'd be stupid to buy at the moment. It will crash eventually.
Just gotta wait for the peak. The reddit kids can't keep up their antics forever.
do Chinese companies check american customers on if they are gullible enough to invest in digital code and if so they expedite shipping to in attempt to get more out of those suckers?
exactly
@deft pewter true but still enough wave to ride it ๐
It's bringing everything down
It's kinda messed up that the hedge fund guys are finally pro-regulation but only cos some nerds are kicking their ass.
Exactly
the whole thing has always been a mess imo
Just saw that RobinHood have blocked $GME trades... hedge fund guys are still allowed to continue.
Either it's a free market or it's not. This is proving it's the latter.
Gotta be the 'right kind' of investor...
we need to go back to the old days where people paid with gold coins and there were no stocks or crap like that
A barter economy? Maybe.
atleast it would be more equal
I doubt it'd be equal...
with no kings or anything it would be pretty fair
Someone will still end up with a bigger pile of gold coins.
maybe but they can't buy extended life
Course they can. Better quality of life usually translates to longer life.
and if you ever had to deal with tangible shit left over from the previous generation you know damn well shit gets lost or stolen lol
you think switching now would somehow turn us back to dying of old age at 30?
No-one said that. But having a barter economy doesn't put everyone on a level footing.
Medieval times were basically barter economies... and the whole thing was still basically a fiefdom.
There's always going to be an underclass, unfortunately.
it makes having real skill more profitable, and noway to "cheat" some system to gain more
No way to cheat? You employ people and you pay them less than their labour is worth, while skimming the rest off the top.
It's a proven system that's been around for millenia.
Way before stock markets ๐
ehh, going from this to that is way diffrent than going from that to this
I don't think so.
I know so, people are way more educated now
just because they don't come to this discord tinkerer lol
There's no difference. Most things can be viewed as hierarchies. Usually pyramid-shaped hierarchies. You get a few rich and powerful people at the time and masses of poor people at the bottom.
That's never been any different.
"Educated" .... right that explains the stack of conspiracy theorists... the folks that won't get vaccines because they cause autism/allow the gov to track you...
Sure, QoL for those at the bottom has improved over time... but the disparity between top and bottom has always been there.
we're talking majority
last i checked those people were not the majority
thus they don't exactly set the line
I dunno. They're not 60IQ folk. They're 'educated' in the sense they made it through high school, work regular jobs, live regular lives.
They're not outliers.
Or rather, their education level doesn't make them outliers, only their ideals do.
I've known a lot of people who're happy to settle for "just enough". They don't want more
seems to me that people have gotten alot better pointing out the wrong in shit that has been the norm for quite awhile now.. don't see it somehow "reverting" after a change
that's a double edged sword
if your talking salary
there are people who do not want to be rich
Some people want/don't want money/power/whatever
correct
Which ... leads to "inequality" ๐
Some people lack ambition. But that's okay because it leaves more room for those that have it.
i don't agree if those people have "chooden" that path
choosen
Something like that ๐
wealth isn't just currency
It's why I personally believe that equal opportunity is a better goal than equality/equity. We should all be given the same chances. Whether we choose to embrace them is up to individuals.
so if someone chooses not to get paid more, they are doing it cause they are happier without
We don't all go through life wanting to be cookie cutter versions of each other. Being equals would be boring.
sounds we're on the sam epage
Or they don't think they can, or there's other reasons for it. It's not always about the pure money aspect ๐
You're conflating wealth and happiness. Being poor and happy is fine if that's what someone wants... but don't try to say happiness is wealth.
hi @ all im using a rpi4 and the hassio os img on it. i need to ask a question about ssh / terminal? where to put it? im kinda overwhelmed.
ty @clever mortar
WE'RE POOPING IN HERE
I'm paid.... a lot more than I used to be. I can afford nicer things. It has made zero difference to how happy/unhappy I am
If it's not making you happier, you can send some my way ๐
if I was a farmer growing food and my neighbor was rich who could not. who is weathier?
in a barter economy
In your ideal world, how are you even considering the neighbour as 'rich' if they have nothing?
Keep it consistent.
They must have something that means they're considered more wealthy. Maybe other assets with value considered greater than that of food itself.
They might be the only doctor in the village, in which case their skills are worth more than a field of potatoes.
if we're talking tangible money only, a son could inherit wealth
I'm sure in a barter economy, I could sell my skills as a doctor to get a free meal any time I wanted to.
without having anything that made said money
But that's no different to today's economy. Inheritance today is digital, you're just talking about coins.
How money is represented is irrelevant. Money is still money. You still have a number of dollars.
I thought we were talking about getting away from trading futures and other intangible assets?
well the convo got branched because tink thinks someone is screwed in thje head if they don't strive toi always get paid more or something lolk
He didn't say that at all. He said not everyone wants to earn more.
it went from low iq people to earn just enough, I misunderstood I guess
Things are getting interesting by the minute ๐คฃ
I made the comment about low IQ as a rebuke to your claim that conspiracy theorists are uneducated.
Because they're functioning individuals with crazy ideas, not some mentally disabled people that can't form thoughts.
@tidal bronze that shit is like watching a thriller movie for you isn't it? to me it's paint drying
and he responded with his comment right after
which i took for adding onto
I don't think they're uneducated... just ... selective about what they believe ๐

@night zodiac is this killing your mood while sitting in your disco room?
So, smart but batshit insane?
Exactly. What kinda nutter believes in a spherical planet? It's clearly flat.
I read your disco ball message. Those things are too wild.
Actually, it's a disk, on the back of a turtle...
@forest edge come on don't rain on purple for @night zodiac
Turtles, all the way down.
Elephants first, please ๐
Don't tell me you got Prince playing in the kitchen, every time you trigger a motion sensor in the kitchen. @night zodiac
As much as I think Prince was very talented. I have never listened to him casually.
don't say whales.. he might be listening
I still think revering back would be better than what is
WHERE THE FUCK IS MY COFFEE INSTACART
zips up fly on the way
No doses left ๐ฆ
see if the economy were to revert you would be seeing coffee addicts out there giving handjobs like crack addicts for their daily "fix"
I have enough coffee stockpiled to see me through .... days I tell you, days
I asked my girl to order my coffee for me so I haven't been getting status updates
apparently there was a delay ๐ฆ
@night zodiac you waiting for PODS ?
PODS?
Coffee is always delivered. How else?
Scene from the Jim Carrey Movie Bruce Almighty (2003)
@night zodiac Keurig or beans?
Personally I'm too impatient to wait for beans to be freshly ground...
https://redbirdcoffee.com/ is my normal dealer but using aldis beans because I googled that they have a decent product. I think normal drug arrives tomorrow
beans
glad I find coffee gross for the most part
It takes 12 seconds to grind beans
Keurig on auto start even easier ๐
thier hot chocolate wasn't bad
You can always change the strength
i've had better but certianly had worse
yeah, that is weak as shit too though
I've got the Tassimo, and that too is quite controllable
Proper mug sized drinks there ๐
Tassimo takes Nespresso size pods?
Takes their own brand
Sadly
But the range is pretty good, and it includes milk frothing and what have you
Looks similar, oh nice.
yup, if the economy were to shift you all would certianly be giving handjobs for sure
I see that you are all over handjobs these days. Is everything ok at home?
sorry what was that? hard to understand you with that milky stuff at the sides of your mouth
Right now it's Pike Place & https://www.cafebustelo.com/en/coffee/k-cup-pods/brazil
my girlfriend likes that stuff. it's okay
Pike Place market? ๐ฎ
I remember when people had found out that one certian expensive type of coffeee came from beans that passed through some animal in thier poop
was quite awhile ago
Oh, it'll just be named after the market ๐ฆ
Kopi luwak? Digested by civets ๐คข
i don't remember what it was or what animal it was. just remember people's reactions when they found out lol
I don't care if it's supposed to improve the flavour, I'm not eating something another animal shat out.
coffee's compiling i see
Coffee's gotta compile before any code does.

they just throw my money away? the fuck
No, they took it, instead
They said they knew my address but the shipper didn't pay enough for forwarding
scumbags
Shipper's problem then. They get to give you your money back or send a replacement ๐
I heard you really like humidity sensors.
when they are like $4, might as well get some redundancy some redundancy some redundancy
Tasmota time
Put a humidity sensor inside the humidity sensor to monitor the humiditiy inside it
What if you want to know the humidity outside it?
Put it on the outside

Noice. Triple layered sensors.
The squirrels have become less picky now that it is cold.
They were eating around the corn but now everything is fair game
How hungry do they have to get before they eat deez nuts?
some rabid squirrels would probably do that for tree fitty
They have a decent amount of meat. We used to allot about 2/3 per person
they are tricky to skin though
If it took 3 animals to feed a person, that's pretty much proof they don't have enough meat on.
how many fucking rice are you eating, mono?
That's like saying a shrimp has a lot of meat.
๐คทโโ๏ธ
You know what shrimp does contain a lot of?
iodine
Shrimp
Serious question now
Do teabags get dizzy when you stir them around in a cup?
Only if you spin them in one direction.
You have to spin them both ways for balance.
That is the best answer I have got, thanks
Most people just ask what is wrong with me
Is that because they don't think raccoons should be drinking tea?
And I usually answer, well I kill people and I eat hands. That's two things
I have no idea tbh
That might have something to do with it

The Iris Xe discrete add-in card will be paired with 9th gen (Coffee Lake-S) and 10th gen (Comet Lake-S) Intelยฎ Coreโข desktop processors and Intel(R) B460, H410, B365, and H310C chipset-based motherboards and sold as part of pre-built systems. These motherboards require a special BIOS that supports Intel Iris Xe, so the cards wonโt be compatible with other systems.
apparently
So no ryzen quicksync machines by the looks of it
I think they are being silly not supporting it on other platforms, but there we go
Hmm, at least not yet...
This might be so they can do a controlled rollout of the cards (and it prevents people from buying the systems, pulling the cards, and reselling them)
Knowing intel it will end up being closed, but I am still crossing my fingers!

New levels of vendor lockin
Hm. This was a nice one for automated incremental backups https://hub.docker.com/r/jasonccox/restic-rclone
It's like block based backup, but it makes the blocks itself, so it works without block based backend support!
Hoping not, especially since they've been teasing high-end graphics cards targeted at gaming workloads
Time will tell!
The Intel Xe DG1 cards that they're coming out with now have 80 execution units enabled on the GPU. Additional SKUs with 128 and 512 EUs are already known
I should change my fuel filter tomorrow, it appears to be sweating

I need to automate do not disturb on my phone. I'll turn if on in the middle of the night and not see notifications for three days.
Can't you just set 'quiet hours' on your phone?
probably lol
I think Android even does it when your phone's charging between certain hours.
It has to because I have only heard an alert once and it was probably shortly after falling asleep
but I charge my phone like once every 7 days
so probably related to some other variables as well
oh hey, I found the settings
it turns off at 7AM, there is the problem
I won't do the manual do not disturb anymore and just use this.
good suggestion, thanks
Every 7 days? You got a Nokia or something?
I don't even think it is much bigger than other phones, I just barely use it
battery wise
Well I guess when you got no-one to call ๐คทโโ๏ธ

I wonder if I should trust the adhesive on these sensors to not rip the paint from my walls
Depends on the paint

Hey Loung folk, i am new to the discord. Could someone tell me where i should request help?

Hi Everyone, Any idea when the Blue will start shipping out? I purchased from ameridroid the day after it was announced.
Alright, I have 8 installed now
the NSA thanks you for it
I wish they would talk back to me
heeey everyone
set up HA recently, quite surprised how easy it was honestly
curious, is there such a thing as a loudness sensor?
You want to ask in probably #automations-archived
right, ok!
diy maybe
But a lot of cameras have noise sensors
Which can be monitored in HA as a trigger for other actions
Maybe try #cameras-archived
i was thinking of using it to detect shower noises to work alongside motion sensor to control the lights, so a camera won't work ๐คฃ
the sensors for noise are quite common in arduino kits and they have db sensors all over online
Just get a non contact sensor kit for your pipes. I'm sure it only costs $5000
morning
@wooden egret I've had good success using humidity sensors to detect when a shower starts running

Anybody here who can speak from experience about deciding between AWS and places like Linode?
for a tiny little server with a few static pages
I'm aws certified, does that make me biased?
Probably ๐
All my friends who works with azure say they wish they had gone with aws though
I have been with DreamHost for eons. I have a shared hosting account there and a dozen or so domain names, most an empty site and some with email (most email points to Google from back when their "Apps" accounts were free).
A friend suggested I rent a $5 server from Linode and stick my stuff on there.
Never touched or know anyone who uses it, so no idea
I've had an aws instance to play with in the past, but their pricing is confusing
I'm guessing you did not get certified to dabble with $5 per month servers though, so perhaps not your area of expertise ๐
Can I use "EBS" as the root-fs of an ec2 instance? I'm guessing no.
You can do quite a lot on AWS for free if you don't need much compute.
It doesn't look like the storage is free?
If you're talking about static sites, don't bother spinning up an EC2, just host out of S3.
You'll pay pennies per month.
I'd prefer to have this ec2 instance. Perhaps I'll learn a thing or two.
The attached storage on the smallest EC2s is free, I think. But you talking tiny things like t2-micro that can barely do anything
Seriously, if it's a static site, EC2 is absolutely the wrong approach. Wrong took for the job and way more expensive for the capabilities you care about.
I also need to host mail
I guess I could just forward those two domains to one of my Google Apps accounts
And for the occasional compute tasks, learn to use AWS Lambda.
Most people don't need provisioned servers but don't realise there are better alternatives.
DNS for a dozen or so domains?
1 zone = 1 domain, right?
so $0.50 per domain per month, so 17 domains would cost me $8.50 just for the DNS
Haha
Most are for a friend who keeps coming up with new brands for his fashion biz
Yes, hosted zones add up quickly. Just bill your clients for them
Your friend seems to be costing you money for services you provide. He's a client, he's just not paying you.
Fair enough ๐
Omg
Dreamhost rip you off in hosting fees instead
I just for the first time in my life zoomed in on your picture@deft pewter
I thought it was a disturbing teletubbie
It was not
The $10.95 is shared hosting for unlimited domains, web hosting, mail hosting.
It isnโt high performance, of course. But I donโt have any real need for that.
Unlimited storage and bandwidth?
So you'd need to hit 22 domains on AWS for it to cost more there.
Check out the costs for S3. It's almost free unless you're moving GBs around all the time
I didnโt know I could host sites on s3. Will have to have a look at that.
It was one of my first suggestions
There's a little bit of work to do with getting HTTPS set up but it's still fairly easy. I'll dig out a link later when I'm not on mobile.
Yeah, I saw it back then too but hadnโt opened a browser yet.
I think I might give this a try with one of the parked domains, see if I can get it up and running.
honestly, for really tiny things don't even do vps
VPS ๐คข what is this? The 2000s?
@odd kindle I have a shared hosting account.
then honestly stay with that unless you need something more. Or if you just want to do more
but anything else will mean more work, probably without any real benefits
The benefit would be โoooohhh tinkeringโ ๐
exactly, if you're after that then by all means go k8s, but expect it to be a lot of work and result in a lot more downtime than you have right now
Well, it sounds like AWS is worth at least exploring the S3 / Route 53 option.
Or... AWS for all the tinkering and minimal downtime.
No ec2 instance.
If you're just after static hosting you can do free static hosting on cloudflare or github or any number of other solutions that, imho, is far simpler than s3
The last time I managed a web server was in 1997 for worldonline.nl where I worked at the time. I bet nothing has changed! ๐
(That was an ISP)
but again, it comes back to wanting to tinker vs just wanting a simple / cost-effective solution
Ah... GitHub Pages. The most professional and flexible solution around.
depending on what you're after github pages IS by far the best solution.
trying to get people to use more advanced / complex solutions just for the sake of it is just wrong. Now if you're after the tinkering, if that is the goal then definitly go aws / gcp
Whatโs gcp?
Translation: If you want zero flexibility and to only deploy static pages from a GitHub repo, this is a solution.
Google Cloud Platform (or something)
Basically Google's answer to AWS.
Oh right
Since rob's already said he also wants mail as part of whatever platform he goes for, can we please stop shilling GH Pages?
Either stick with DreamHosting or move to AWS/GCP/Azure. I'd recommend AWS.
Massive platform, great variety of tools that all work with each other, huge community and amazing documentation.
Iโm going to check out AWSโ non-ec2 approach.
GCP is probably close and Azure is a bit newer to the game.
from what I read he was using google apps for the email, I would have just used that. But I'm out not going to argue this
And this is what you're after for setting up HTTPS with an S3 static site, rob: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/website-hosting-custom-domain-walkthrough.html
Walk through a code example of how to set up a static website using a custom domain that is registered with Route 53.
@molten osprey Go with what you want, but realize that this is a very elitist channel and people will recommend the "coolest" not the most suited solution.
If you end up migrating all 17 domains across, you probably don't want to do that manually 17 times. AWS has another service called CloudFormation that lets you define an application stack in code and have AWS go deploy/update the stack.
There's nothing elitist about recommending flexible toolsets.
Cloud-native tools aren't only popular amongst big businesses. They're great for hobbyists too.
Mmmm uptime, very elitist
Their API surfaces are amazing too. I have my GitHub repo hooked into AWS via GitHub Actions. There's almost nothing you can't do via the CLI or SDK.
At the end of the day, it's going to come down to someone wanting a bundled solution or waiting a tailored solution. You could shop around forever to find a bundle that suits your exact needs... or you could build it yourself on a cloud platform. There's just a learning curve involved.
Is CloudFront an AWS service too?
Everything I've mentioned is
There are something like 300 AWS services but you'll never even look at most of them.
@odd kindle appreciate the comments, but am going to give it a try because itโll give me an insight into AWS. Iโm not in IT anymore but a nerd at heart and I marvel at how AWS is set up.
Elastic beanstalk ๐คข
S3 + CloudFront + Route53 gets you your HTTPS static site. Add other services into the mix as needed.
EB isn't all bad but I wish I didn't have to work with provisioned servers at all.
We have stuff running on a huge number of EC2s still and it's a PITA. So much that can go wrong.
@deft pewter I have 1 wordpress site. What would be the solution for that?
Donโt stay โreplace Wordpressโ ๐
Hehe
That'll probably want a provisioned server. I'm not 100% sure since I stay away from WordPress ๐
Google will know
Can it run out of a docker container? Might be able to spin up a docker host for less expense than a full EC2
Ec2 is free, for a small instance. That Wordpress site gets virtually no traffic so Iโm sure something simple would suffice?
Yeah, that might do the trick. Can you replicate it there for testing before turning off the old one?
Maybe? WP used to be a bit annoying when moving around. But I can try.
t2.micro have barely any compute power, so I'm not sure how PHP will hold up. Might be sluggish
I'd stay away from aws it's just not for tiny hosted sites
Given how much I run in docker containers on even old Piโs .... I say itโs worth a shot ๐
There's a million other providers who specialise in wordpress hosting
Lightsail is aws's flavour of this
Lightsail.... more reading
I'm with @odd kindle on this one
I know AWS isn't the easiest solution for everything but the reason I'm a big advocate is that it can reduce costs and improve performance if you pick the right services for each application.
Who cares about $10/month vs $1 a month.
@hushed basalt Im not alone ๐
At this scale it's meaningless
Not just cost. Uptime and performance too ๐คทโโ๏ธ
You seem so be missing the fact that your fuckups also count towards uptime. Aws allows for much more fuckups
You can fuck up on any platform...
It's okay, rob. Stay on DreamHosting. You're not allowed to explore other services in case you fuck up.
Loads of cloud native services are interesting. The hard part is picking the right services.
You can fuck up in all services but the more moving part you have the more likely it is to do so. And again, not saying you shouldnโt. But when estimating uptime you should take all aspects into account
I'm no expert but I'm happy to offer my experience, rob.
Even if he did want to rearchitect to static sites netlify would be a way better option
It does DNS mgmt too
And the emails? And the possibility to add in sections of compute?
If you only have one or two endpoints that need compute, AWS will let you bind a couple of Lambdas to your API. How do you handle that with static-only platforms?
Looks like Lightsails DNS mgmt even letโs you point to S3-hosted sites.
Route53 on its own is a massive selling point. I have my main domains out on the web but can dynamically point subdomains at local services behind a dynamic IP
I do that with one domain. The rest are all just โwww.โ domains with most of them a simple single page and letโs encrypt cert that DreamHost renews for me.
You can do the same with cloudflares workers @hushed basalt if you havenโt looked at it. Itโs honestly really nice.
AWS issues the certs, so that's one less thing to worry about renewing.
My HA domain is a CNAME to a dynamic DNS record kept up to date and pointing to me by my provider.
Noice.
AWS accountants?
Yeah, I'm not pretending it's easy. If I hadn't been introduced to it on the job, I wouldn't be as confident.
If I can understand most if it
But I still stand by my claims that it can be the best choice if you pick the right services. Knowing which services to pick is often harder than implementing them.
ATX, senior solution architect for Northern Europe

17 sites...
Why do you say itโs a big investment in time. It seems pretty straight forward to me.
Not sure they qualify as โsitesโ ๐
Devil is in the details
Don't let people put you off trying, rob. You sound capable and determined. That's all you need (and hours of reading the documentation...)
I have some experience with AWS, I run a tiny EC2 to have my own dns server out there. It's not that easy indeed.,
Aws doesn't hold your hand, their customer base is people using their infrastructure at a higher level
Iโm going to try it. If it ends up being too much of a challenge, Iโll just change DNS back to DreamHost. No harm in giving it a shot.
Places like netlify exist because aws doesn't care about small scale
I love AWS because it keeps everything in one platform. That's not going to be everyone's priority. I've got a blog hosted via static S3. I've got bots running as scheduled lambdas. There's almost no limit to what you can do, you just have to find the 'right way' to do it.
Why do you run your own DNS server?
I don't know why you keep claiming that. There's nothing wrong with running small sites out of S3.
I run one at home (two, actually), but nothing public.
If you want a developer friendly VPS digital ocean is great
Netlify exists because people want an easy-to-use solution that just works out of the box, not because it's 'better for small scale'.
I mean, I'm not saying aws is bad. I was part of running a multi-continent aws setup that costs $10ks/a month. It's very good. But it's also complex
That's exactly what people st small scale want
because it gives me more flexibility for my domains ( and a friends) including record types most providers dont offer, and dynamic updates
But that's not because of the scale, it's just an overlap between what they're hosting and their IT skills.
I'm with @hushed basalt here. It IS better at a small scale
This is like when people confuse causation and correlation ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Route 53 is a dedicated product by AWS, it doesnโt deliver what you need?
The strengths of platforms like Netlify are that you can just push a button. It's not that they're 'better for small scale'.
don't know never heard of it until today ๐
You just happen to have more small scale businesses using them because they don't have architects to plan out a fancy ass AWS app.
Janet the florist doesn't want to learn AWS to run her online ads ๐คทโโ๏ธ
@deft pewter @hushed basalt lets just agree that we view this very very differntly
Yes, boss.
But one thing tho, if you decide on doing something more advanced I would go with gcp over aws, it's way nicer
Thanks for the discussion!! ๐
You're quite welcome
Evening here so best not get behind my computer right now and start digging into this. But I will have a go at this tomorrow morning.
and thanks too, It looks like except dynamic updates ( which I don't use much) route53 could be something for me
You mean DDNS?
Run that locally to deploy an API Gateway-fronted Lambda function that updates your Route53 CNAMEs
I only started using it recently on Tinkerer's recommendation but it's been smooth.
CNAME/A/whatever. I always forget the types.
Once it's running, you just set up ddclient on your server to occasionally check for changed external IP addresses and call into your Lambda.
no, not ddns, but that does look sweet! instead of using dyndns hmmm
and what I meant is clients that update the records with their IP's, as I'm lazy and don't want to type over ipv6 records
I think we're talking about the same thing. Adding/updating records to have the most recent IP.
maybe... ddns usualy is used to register your outside ipv4 address, but I'm talking inside addresses of host. and like I said, not using it much at the moment, or at all, I think I broke something a while back
I guess route53 is cheaper then ec2. still reading about it, I wonder if it also allows non amazon dns as secundaries
It all comes down to how many domains you'll manage, I guess. As rob pointed out, it's something like 50c/month per hosted zone (unlimited subdomains/records per zone).
I only manage two zones right now, so I'm not worried about the cost. WorkMail probably costs more than all my other apps combined... that's not cheap ๐
But based on the name, you know they're pitching it at businesses.
Why not run something internal for internal use? I run dnsmasq to resolve hostnames on my local network.
currently on my dns server there is 1 domain for myself and 3 or 4 for a friend, who runs the 2nd dns server that is my secondary ( and vice versa)
Oh right you mentioned that.
yeah I have internal dns, but I'd like the internal machines to have a host.subdomain.domain.com name... not that it's working right now ๐
My hosts at home all respond to <hostname>.lan, which obviously doesnโt work externally
more like desktop.local.domain.com ๐
and no, I don't own domain.com, it's an example
Haha
Damnit, I was going to hack your IoT.
Gasp really! ๐
If anyone wants to access mine, it's on 192.168.0.99
My most recent nerdy purchase was a Mikrotik router.
I went ubiquity
edgerouter x sfp
nice commandline
๐
runs ipv6 tunnels, openvpn what else does a network nerd need ๐
UniFi access points for me, almost went EdgeRouter but decided on Mikrotik
isnโt that a $1600 machine?
โฌ90
no, not 10Gb
One of the reasons I didnโt go for EdgeRouter was because the hardware had no 10Gbps ports.
Except that one $1600 one.
but Gb sfp in case we ever get fiber here... fingers crossed
Yeah fiber direct in is nice. Although I have an SFP+ port on mine, the cage doesnโt support GPON modules. So I will still need an ONT.
If there was a device with 10Gbps ports, Iโd have gone EdgeRouter. EdgeOS (I think) looked cool. Basically Debian iirc.
yeah you have a basic linux prompt under the normal cli
I've used that already too, to do some geo blocking in the firewall
running a script to get the IP blocks from the iana
Mikrotik has its own command line. Iโve enjoyed learning about it.
Although when I first bought the device .... it came preloaded with a government config including VPN access to their infrastructure.
I told the distributor. He just shrugged.
ouch
I could pay a little for 1Gbit in but I'm just happy with free 100Mbit. I have a hard time motivating even paying $20 / month for it ๐
well you name sounds dutch, so I'm not surprised ... ( dutch too btw)
Iโm dutch but I live in Thailand
1000/500 is $25 per month here
ah. well not sure if I want to hack thai government...
I kept the password .... if youโre interested ๐
cdd.go.th .... not particularly exciting
no thanks, I don't like death penalties
Haha
@molten osprey we have fiber into the house and free 100/100 but can pay something like $20 for 1000/1000 but given that it's like once a month that I feel like I would benefit from it for 10 minutes it's hard to justify
well, "free" as in included in the price
Agreed. Itโs crazy overkill@and not worth it.
However, my boss lives in downtown London and he canโt get internet faster than 9/1. So itโs kind of worth paying just to poke his eyes out ๐
lol ๐
I wish... my 50/5 docsis is already a lot more then that...
If you actually used your internet for more than slack/discord and some netflix it would easily be worth it as well
Especially given i live in โa banana republicโ as he calls it ๐
tbf, I tend to get around 125/125 as well
I rarely exceed 200 for more than a few seconds; in actual use. Usually not more than 20-25
like โฌ50 sure it includes tv... but you can't get it without it..
Bundles!
Yeah that might prove an issue.
I live in a small town in west friesland ๐
I used to work for the NOB (which you should know, and make most brits here chuckle) in the late 1990s we did a trial with streaming VHS quality video over 1.5Mbps ADSL connections to 1000 homes in Amsterdam
We have a some what nice deal with the ISP where we get 100/100, ip-phone and a "medium"-package of tv channels for next to nothing / appartment. So the housing cooperative just decided to include it for free
West Friesland is .... Hoorn and stuff?
Sounds like a decent deal!
it is. Only we we're not using the ip-phone nor the tv really. But it's still less expensive than most 100/100 would cost
yes
I lived in Hoorn for about a year
Still visit it every time I am in NL, to see some friends there.
Some SERIOUS data centers being run in the area by the big boys.
hoorn is 15 minutes away for me. but yeah I know NOB, also used to work for KPN so I know a/vdsl setup quite well from a technical perspective. also the curent tvoip they run nowadays
Iโve been told once that part of the current โUitzending Gemistโ still runs on code we developed for that trial (Snelnet, I think is what it was called).
The good old days!!!
quite possible. that part is less then optimal though I've left KPN a few years ago, who knows, they might have improved it since
close to opperdoes I think Microsoft has a new really huge DC
Microsoft and Google both operate data centers in the area, both are expanding.
A lot of Xbox stuff runs in that datacenter, Iโve been told.
Ah xbox
Letting 12 year old boys call you a noob since 2003
When did xbox live launch, I feel like it was 2003
speaking of xbox, I had a hard time getting even remotly decent download speeds on the xbox. Got like ~25Mbit
Crappy CDNs I'm guessing
probably. But I expected the new xbox to handle at least 100Mbit down, but no...
Xbox department probably didn't want to pay azure
They're probably hosting it on a cluster of OG xboxes
I was thinking it might have been my cables of what not, but no... can easly get 125Mbit to a computer
Does the xbox have a web browser
no idea
You could do a speedtest
haven't really bothered investigating that much time.
those were the days
you can actually boot the xbox into some kind of dev mode
that is basicly windows and apparently install emulators and stuff
I had a modded original xbox
Bought it second hand for $25
Got so much use out of it
Gross @clear ferry is sitting in hangouts trying to get people to come listen to his 4 year old boy voice
What games do you play
@clear ferry turn that shit down, you are past distortion levels lmao
Since all the halos after reach are garbage imo I never had the will to play any consoles
I went years without touching my ps3
Once you play The Last of Us it's like, now what
Maybe I was after distortion
I think xbox would have died in the crib without halo
Look up "best OG xbox exclusives"
was like listening to a deaf person who trys to play it off like they can hear and thinks max volume is just normal
It's like halo and then trash
I don't really play ๐ don't have time for it. But got the subscription thing that gives you a couple of hundred games. Downloaded 1TB games and have played like 10 differnt for an hour
It's all great
stop buying consoles if your not going to play them
I intend to play, at some point
thats why they get more expensive and shittier
figured if I get covid it would be an excellent time to game, unless I get really sick ๐
PC game and use a controller if thats what you like
consoles are just bad anymore
I mean a subscription to play online, $70+ games and the peripherals cost as much if not more
it's a bad taste in everyone's mouth
Ps4 was my last one and no more. ppl shouldn't have to pay extra to play other people
majority of pc games don't do that
|| is always right, even if it sounds wrong ||
Yeah I never bought xbox live
I refused to on principle
It's like buying a lawn mower and having to purchase a subscription to adjust the blade height
I'm never buying a console again
with small pc's capable of playing most anything these days it's dumb not to just get one for your tv and use a controller lol
Games are cheaper too
lol reminds me of that plex arcade review that just came out
I never got into retro gaming
was talking about the lag from the wireless controller and the lag from the streaming the games to the devices. was practically unplayable and something he thought sounded cool but then turns to literal shit once he tried it
Playing super mario bros just isn't fun to me
Original Halo must count as retro now though
Fuck that game was amazing
What's with xboxes naming conventions
Xbox, xbox 360, xbox one, xbox ?
What's the last one called
wasn't one xbox s
Xbox series x. Wtf
whats real crappy is since the last generation the new norm is multiple variations of the same damn thing
ps4 and ps4 pro
etc
they use to boast about realising a new console once every 10 years
Really just makes you go, you know what I'll just build a pc
thats gone to wasteside
Then replace the core parts every 5 years
And keep the same case/psu forever
And be happier for it. And play any game that's not a console exclusive
good thing about xbox being owned by microsoft.. those halo games are usually avail on pc lol
Yeah now they are
Halo 6 or whatever it is looks pretty crap
I never played halo 5 but hear it was awful
Halo 4 was the worst experience I've ever had.
Halo to me is just Halo 1 and Halo Reach
may have played the 3rd one don't remember but I played the first two
multiplayer was even fun
not just the campaign
and now i'm sad cause that reminds me just how crappy games have gotten lol
hello, i have reverse engineered the protocol for my bluetooth deadbolt locks (a popular model not currently supported by home assistant), and i would like to ask some questions about responsibly publishing my code. eventually i plan to make a home assistant integration that uses my code. i was hoping that someone here might have some interest/suggestions for me, but i'm not sure of the best channel to ask in. thanks in advance!
@empty sentinel sure one of the channels under Development could help you more on that
@forest edge thanks!
lol the new 2021 tesla has no drive control. the car "guesses" what drive you want to be in, rather that be reverse or any gear in drive lmao
Hey all, probably not right channel, but is there a specific HA installation that is best? Like, using a flashed SD card with the OS, or running a VM, or..?
@velvet surge no "best" only opinions which vary
My understanding is that the SD card approach is not the best due to them failing. Which is totally what just happened to me yesterday.
yea but your not stuck running the os on an sd card
sd card was just what it was because for quite some time devices like the rpi4 couldn't boot from usb etc

Personally, run on anything that's not SD card - even a Pi4+SSD is better than Pi+SD
I want to boot from SSD
You can on the Pi
Is the pi4+ssd usb or onboard?
Ok perfect. I do want to move to a real PC, but money constraints have me trying to go the less expensive route, like the Pi.
Thank you for the info
Second hand laptop ๐
I run HA on a 7+ year old laptop
I've got a netbook here actually that would be a better performer than a Pi ๐
run if off a smart Samsung refrigerator. it's like killing two birds with one stone
Hahah
I would freaking love to have a smart fridge
@clever mortar looks like that's what happened yesterday. Power loss to the Pi, then the SD card started throwing a massive amount of IO errors and containers were failing
Now, if I could figure out how to get my config off of it I'd be happy
Power loss can also cause file system corruption
There's pinned messages in #330990055533576204 that can help you recover, if it's not dead
Ahh I see them, thanks
@forest edge How does it know what you want to do?
There's a channel for everything.
#hardware-archived seems a good start for talking about devices.
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived.
If it's a question about the HA Blue start in #330990055533576204.

Hi guys.
Do you guys know where I can find user experience of home assistant with Ikea TRร
DFRI?
I'm not talking about the technical implementation, but rather what people think about using it with gateway through home assistant.
neat
Apart from home assistant losing contact to the gateway about once every 3 months
Also colour / hue change of the lights?
And it needs to be restarted
All apart from 1. For some reason it is identifed wrongly, so no rgb on that, otherwise yes
There are no real RGB lights anyway, right? Only how much red they have?
You can swap the gateway for a better zigbee reciever though, that is my long term plan
Such as a "zzh!"
cool cool.
Many thanks
So if I want something easy to integrate, without flashing, programming or soldering it's a good idea to go TRร DFRI?
I probably should have looked at the firmware settings a bit more on those sensors
I have 12-15 trรฅdfri lights as well, it was so buggy that I moved them to the hue gateway a month or so back
the trรฅdfri lights have worked perfectly using the hue gateway for months now tho
what I really really really want is zzh!

Hi,
I wonder if somebody could help me.
I would be interested on matrix notification in HA. There is a new SDK matrix-nio which can do end2end encryption and much. The problem is I'm not very familiar with asyncio... Do anybody know the author of the matrix notification integration?
Second I have a custom integration for RPI's PiFace digital2 extension to handle more than one of these. It works and I was not able (mainly because time) to make it backward compatible with the old implementation and so it was not merged into HA core.
Third I would like to read these channels with my matrix client. I created a bot in discord for it and I just learned that I need to send a link to GUILD's admin to give access to this bot GUILD wide. Could this be possible? ๐
Cheers.
this is lounge. might find some help in the other channels

Well we can't tell them the parts we remember, aka working on our home automation.... They frown upon that, haha
Since it's an unwritten law that it's forbidden to do any actual coding on a Friday afternoon, I spent a couple of hours changing up my IDE's colour scheme ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I quite like GitHub's dark mode colours, so I'm trying to match it.
Got most things right, there's just a few symbols/keywords that GH doesn't highlight and my IDE does ๐ฆ
But yeah... fairly productive Friday afternoon by my usual standards.

Very cool though
@last cedar it uses the same onboard sensors it uses to auto drive i assume
This is the first winter driving in real snow, and I hate VW dsg. I would hate having an autopilot car
the teslas are magical with the motor per wheel shit. they react magically
and as long as you don't mind buying a new car every 10 years...
True, probably better with an electric motor rather than a silly auto box
So much more control though with a manual, IMO
till your foot slips
Put in 2nd gear and gently lift clutch, no worries about spinning wheels and mpving sideways into car in next lane.
Auto I have now is like, ok not moving, a bit more throttle, okay 2000 rpm and spinning wheels in D2
My foot never slips. Raccoons have grippy feets
auto transmissions come a long way since the days of manual being standard
manual hasn't been standard here is holy hell, don't even remember lol
Could also be the actual implimentation, I don't think it works too well anyway
Doesn't pair with the smallest 1,6 engine well IMO
oh lawn mowers..
The manual I had was the small 2 liter huge difference
Yes, did you think thry let raccoons drive cars in Sweden?
I am not even allowed to be here. If they find me I would be shot
the last car I owned with a transmission was a Honda Fit
1.3L of fury
it would've been boring as shit with a slushbox
Hehe
Our volvo is manual, still like new, after new bushes and ample amounts of mos2
Only 21 years old, almost worn in now
Quite amazing how stuff has moved "recently"
The more modern diesels here brought a wave of automatic cars
because nobody wants to shift that much
And now that a lot have gone to hybrid, those are basically exclusivly automatic. I don't even know of non hybrid drivetrains in a hybrid body being able to ordered in manual
multi-speed automatics are WAY better than they used to be
Yeah, apart from the winter control, it is so much more comfortable with auto
Even that caddy 1.6 is 7 speed
Although first is like a helper gear more than anything
First gear only exists to scare pedestrians when they take too long to get off the road.

Of course, they scream less if they're dead before you start the skinning process.
Oh, is that why thry were making so much noise
Why do you leave the important details until last?
Now there are lots of flashing blue lights, what does that mean?
Racoons have all the fun
Found a container, seems ok. Full of trash. Happy
@deft pewter next time you give advice can you give all the important bits first. It would have been useful to know I should have killed them before skinning them
there should be an option to flag people on github for writing shitty issues
