My gran's house was ... interesting, with some rooms being a step up from the landing, because they were on an extension, and half floors, and walls that were nearly square, but not really

clear ferry
#

I was in a house built by some americans in the 70s here

clever mortar
#

I don't think the kitchen had any straight walls

clear ferry
#

there was so many mezzanines

#

WHY DO YOU NEED SO MANY MEZZANINES

forest edge
#

bet they were really canadians

quartz ether
#

Lol. My house is nice and flat with very straight walls and square edges

forest edge
#

are the square tho? have you actually tested them?

#

wood moves over years

forest edge

so even if something was pretty close to being dead on, many years later they wouldn't be

I'm fricking annoyed that I can't figure out what car this is, I saw it yesterday and knew I had seen it before, thought it was a 91 mustang at first, then a chrysler lebaron, but it is neither, you who know shitty cars @forest edge you must surely know

unkempt sage
#

the guy who built our house was a bricklayer by trade. so every wall is perfect. Unfortuantley, he couldnt lay a floor straight , plumbing and Electrics were not really his area either. woodwork was another thing he "practicsed" on our house.

#

and he had a hobby for making fireplaces.

gusty wraith
#

uh oh...looks like a 90s mustang sorta

forest edge

loos like a thunderbird from like the 90's or something lol

There we go

The ninth generation of the Ford Thunderbird is a personal luxury coupe that was manufactured and marketed by Ford for the 1983 to 1988 model years. In response to the sales downturn of the 1980–1982 Thunderbird, the Thunderbird underwent an extensive model revision for the 1983 model year. While remaining a personal luxury coupe (to minimize ov...

My father had a 73 Thunderbird, that was a nice car

the 87 one....

#

not much

gusty wraith
#

they all looked the same sort of

forest edge
#

ford put everything into the stang

gusty wraith
#

aaand 30 years later we are at it again

#

everything looks the same.

clear ferry
#

Exactly same colour my father had, with vinyl roof

forest edge
#

hell they did it again with whatever this new disgusting thing they just released which is a mustang for familys or something

clear ferry
#

it had six ashtrays and 6 cig lighters

#

🤣

gusty wraith
#

uh yeah that mustang SUV because...of course!

#

ElEcTrIfIeD!!11

forest edge
#

dumbest thing they ever did yet

#

analyst or whatever is telling these companies people don't want cars anymore, it's all about trucks and suv's

gusty wraith
#

because...yeah you wake up every day and think "my dream car is a mustang SUV running on a battery"

forest edge
#

so ford and went and made that garbage

clear ferry
#

We have 50% off electric vehicles here, but I'm still not interested tbh, there are too many uncertainties and shortcomings

forest edge
#

with what

#

switching?

#

I wouldn't switch till you had no other choice

#

no eletric vehicle is going to be as good as gas powered in this day in age

clear ferry
#

Eh, the incentives are good, we have basically free power, and no road tax on them, and no toll booths

gusty wraith
#

i'm a polluter. 2l diesel engine with straight pipe...

forest edge
#

what you gonna plug into when it runs out of charge in the middle of nowhere tinker?

clever mortar
#

Same as not running out of fuel - plan ahead 😉

clear ferry
#

We have charging station over most of the country

forest edge
#

what if storms take out power

gusty wraith
#

1000km with one tank when driving "sensible"

clear ferry
#

fast charging

clever mortar
#

If a storm takes out power, then likely I shouldn't have been out driving 😉

clear ferry
#

I would save $3500 a year just in gas money tbh

clever mortar
#

I'm as likely to run into issues with no fuel at the petrol station...

forest edge
#

you lose power more than that lol

clear ferry
#

maybe in the US

#

power outages here are ... rare

clever mortar
#

Same here

forest edge
#

rare is not never

clever mortar
#

Even out in the sticks, power outages are rare, and quickly resolved

clear ferry
#

I can count the last ten years on one hand

#

and four of them were less than 4 hours

clever mortar
#

I've had no power outages in the last 7 years, and none lasting longer than an hour in the last 20

#

Proper infrastructure here 😛

gusty wraith
#

but you know what...i'm a petrol head...i would buy an EV just for getting from A to B but i need my proper dose of oil, diesel and goose bumps from the combination of both of it 😉

forest edge
#

ok, but can you say the same for literally every place you may need to drive too?

clever mortar
#

Yes

clear ferry
#

same with cell phone coverage, we've probably had.... two outages in the last 10 years, which lasted less than 1 hour

#

which is why landline are dead

forest edge
#

then go get yourself a toaster on wheels

clever mortar
#

Honestly, only thing keeping me from switching to electric is that there's no estate car option yet

#

Having a dog, I want proper space in the back for them 😄

clear ferry
#

An Audi A6 Avant sized EV would be interesting

clever mortar
#

Oh yeah 😄

clear ferry
#

only one that makes sense to me now in regards to range is the tesla, but they are proper shite to drive

clever mortar
#

I'd be up for that

forest edge
#

I rather like knowing my vehicle will still run after the world goes to shit lol

clever mortar
#

If the world goes to shit, there's no fuel deliveries either 😉

#

At least with electric you could use solar 😉

forest edge
#

diseal can run on food oil

gusty wraith
#

at least my car runs on any oil that has some similarities to diesel

#

sooo raiding fast food restaurants is a valid tactic then

forest edge
#

there will allways be sources of gas after the world goes to shit

#

world ran on it for far too long for there not to be

gusty wraith
#

if we reach that state we will return to using horses and carriages

clear ferry

My A6 had good milage, 0.4l\100km, my volvo only has 0.7l\100, but atleast it is better than the A8 that averages 1.2l\100km 🤣 close to "american economy driver"

I need to go back at some point, just so I can see if the building still exists. And maybe get a team lunch... but not until after this is over 😄

gusty wraith

gusty wraith

we are cancelling our office leases worldwide

#

I've been saying it for 10 years though

I've been able to WFH since I started my current job, and always taken a day or two to do so each week. When this is all over it'll likely be a day or two a week in the office, just to ensure the team's doing ok 😄

gusty wraith

i'm a system engineer..i can do 99% of things remotely. yet the factory manager insists on us to show up at the office. that f*cker...i tell ya...

first break it without noticing and then fix it and charge for it appropriately

gusty wraith

we do that already for quite a few here in norway @gusty wraith

even with mobile datacenters

just lob the pipes in the ocean

gusty wraith

gusty wraith
#

i think if data centers (or servers specifically) would run a lot cooler and efficient we would have a nicer planet to live on. that's something nobody enters in any calculations regarding co2 footprint and pollution...it's always about cars effectively...

clear ferry
#

Hmmmmmmmm nothing to do, guess I'll make that docker presentation for my team

#

let me try out the libreoffice powerpoint software

#

never used it before

gusty wraith
#

use notepad for extra credits 😄

clear ferry
#

I still see a lot of servers from the mid 00s in commission

#

you could replace 50 of those with a 2020 server

gusty wraith
#

yes but i can tell you from an industrial perspective this will never happen

#

because never change a running system....bullshit

clear ferry
#

that is true for infrastructure sensitive stuff, but those are only 2% of all stuff

clever mortar
#

Do love my client that has a three "node" distributed setup. Every week they shut down an entire site for maintenance - including hardware upgrades

#

Turns out doing IT properly just takes will 😄

clear ferry
#

Yep, those are in the minority though

gusty wraith
#

i've mgirated a 14 years old SCADA system and consolidated 6 hardware servers into one in one year without hassle.... they didn't want that in the first place because it might cause outages....truth is since then we got zero outages compared to the years before when a server got stuck or spat out a PSU because of the harsh conditions in the field

clear ferry
#

SCADA 🤢 Thankfully I don't touch a lot of those

#

Worked quite a bit with ABB

#

their custom stuff is kinda cool

#

pcie-x4 -> 16 PCI slots chassis for controlling valves is pretty cool

gusty wraith
#

sounds strange but okay

#

i've worked with siemens and danfoss only over the past 4 years

clear ferry
#

not scada, but industrial control

#

think it was... 4x channels per PCI-card

gusty wraith
#

but that'll be history in 5 days...

#

but why do you need pciex4 for that? for HF switching valves?

clear ferry
#

it was a PCIe-x4 adapter card ->>>>> 3U chassis with 16x PCI slots

#

some custom ficklery

gusty wraith
#

ah okay i get the idea...

clear ferry
#

Just a single 1U server controlling 16x4 channels

gusty wraith
#

well you could achieve the same with a siemens or vipa cpu and appropriate I/O modules

clear ferry
#

Probably, this was for a custom application though, that was being replaced

gusty wraith
#

interesting

clear ferry
#

Original system was probably from the 80s

gusty wraith
#

oh now that makes more sense now

#

can't control some of the devices from back then with "modern" cpus and i/os

clear ferry
#

For the modern hospitals we build these days they usually do just RS485 per room, and a converter to ethernet from each room controller, which is nice

Hi, everybody! First time writing here, sorry if it's not the appropriate channel for my question. Please point me to the right one if it's wrong. I want to know what is your recommendation for a one-wire, no neutral wall switch, that integrates smoothly in HA, while being privacy-oriented (so LAN mode or DIY mode or something, even flashing with Tasmota or ESPHome) and WiFi-based(no zigbee or z-wave). I know..lots of requirements but I really need an advice and can't find a good answer anywhere. Googled it a lot of times and wondering about Sonoff T4, but afaik it can't be successfully flashed with Tasmota or ESPHome(or am I outdated?)

hushed basalt
#

It brings your server cooling electrical costs way down

#

Fans in servers alone use a huge chunk of power

clear ferry

pssh, fans are negligable in modern servers

heck mine hardly ever go over 1000rpm

compared to modern CPUs they are basically 0

what is the TDP of the AMDs now ? 300w ?

1u fans in a highly utilised data centre?

modern servers are designed for green IT, usually fans are at 20-25% up to 25c inlet

which is what most green it does

i fell in love with the bmw 1series in driving school so my first car was just that....and i heavily abused it to the point where the turbo charger made loud siren like noises.i smoked in it, slept in it (alone and of course with one or another lady on the back seat) and i couldn't be arsed to fix anything since it just ran like it should...then i drove it to spain and back ~2200 km on dry wheel bearings because i thought the tires were the culprit... i scratched the paint, ruined the bumpers, ... the list goes on and on

wet pilot

what's stupid is, now that the bronco is a thing, they could totally put a stick in the ranger but they won't

woof. poor thing D:

wet pilot
#

its a NA v6 that somehow feels like it has turbo lag

its stupid as hell

#

there's a 93 (us octane) map out there that fixes that and raises the redline

gusty wraith

there's something against turbo lag and it's called anti-lag hehehehe

so they just fubar'd the fuel map

gusty wraith

indeedy

wet pilot

also 6k redline makes me hit the damn limiter all the time because i'm used to 6.5k

gusty wraith

usually you will find a map for the higher tier labelled engine with the same parts which is perfectly safe and those will run without a hitch

gusty wraith

my diesel just stops injecting at 5k 😄 it's a little bit anticlimactic when you hit that line.... 😄

thing is even the slightest change on the map is a huge difference when you're used to a car...

wet pilot

oh yeah. but i just got this thing to 2k miles after picking it up in august XD

#

so not enough muscle/ear memory to retrain yet

gusty wraith

that might or might not take a while. really depends on the engine imho. got an vauxhall astra as a rental and immediately knew what's going on but then got a skoda and...yeah let's say we both hadn't much fun on the trip

#

i was constantly yelling at it for behaving like a donkey on acid

wet pilot

haha

#

the trans and diff are solid. just this fuel map is infuriating

#

and the lower redline but its a truck so that's not that odd

gusty wraith
#

you know... they tried so hard to decouple the driver from the wheels and the engine that you have the feeling yo're sitting 10 meters above the car. it's sluggish, it's wonky and oh my i'm talking like jeremy clarkson right now am i...

wet pilot

it's amazing how much fun you can get out of a relatively small block

i had the pleasure of driving the audi s3 (2000-something model) of my best friend. it's just a simple straight 4 turbo engine.... wheel spin at the 3rd gear on all 4 wheels is kinda nice 🙂 but you have tow work hard to keep it straight in line tho...

#

but can't clutch it too hard at lower rpms or else the piston rods would bend...not an easy task with the equipped racing grade clutch ....

For context: In Sweden, 15 year olds can get a license to drive a moped and/or a tractor. An EPA-tractor is a car that has been modified to significantly limit power output and max speed such that it is classified as a tractor.

they have to be replaced in pairs when a bellow breaks, so I think he was quoted €7500 for the job

#

that said, he opted to replace all four at once since the car was aging

#

not as bad as my collegue who had to replace the panorama sunroof on his Mercedes E-class though, it was thankfully under warranty, but he got to see the quote which was €19k

low harness

Almost as thick as the doors on the A8 armoured i see

Quite impressive when a 1.5tonne car becomes 4.5tonnes

gusty wraith
#

seems to be standard thickness against bullets of any caliber/grenades/mortars/nuclear strikes/ .... i wonder whose person is this. i mean why would you need such an armored car if you would live in peace with the world so to speak? 🤔

Just based on which day it is, I'd guess that's street-force one or whatever

I thought there was a feedback channel, guess not :p

deft pewter
#

Someone posted something then deleted it.

#

There's a forum and there's GitHub. Both can be valid for feedback depending on what you're feeding back on.

deft pewter
#

But... since you started your message with 'this is a bit of a rant', it's probably not constructive feedback and you should maybe consider keeping it to yourself.

ocean arrow
#

Yep. Doing that. It is constructive but not helpful.

deft pewter
#

If it's not helpful, it's almost definitely not constructive either 😉

#

having or intended to have a useful or beneficial purpose.

I was gonna say, constructive minus helpful kind of made me curious

tame sand

is there a devops guy here whom i could ask some questions ?

Don't make the bot do the thing.

Just ask... don't expect people to get drawn into a conversation that they may not be able to help with.

It happens to the best of us. I described something as "does not work" the other day. Nearly removed my own mod status when I realized.

tame sand
#

anyways... 😅
I wanted to learn some new thing so i decided to try a small project with a webserver with a seperated cms. And i am kinda done at this point and just want to now if i did something terrible wrong or forgot something especially regarding security.

  1. Domain with a A-Record to server IP
  2. Server running Ubuntu 20.04 Running ssh(not port 22) with pubkey auth. Ufw Firewall only allowing port 80 and 443 to nginx.
  3. Nginx configured as a reverse Proxy to localhost (domain1.net-> 127.0.0.1:8080 for example) and enforcing https
  4. Used Certbot to require SSL certificates
  5. On the backend Docker is running with a bunch of containers all only exposed to localhost (including the webserver ofc)

One thing remaining on my list is mail but apparently this is a bit messy because you need PRT-Record and a bunch of other stuff to send and recieve mail with said domain.

#

So rip it apart please, i am here to learn 🤔

night zodiac
#

Did I read that last part correctly that you want to send mail from your own server?

#

Sending mail from your own server to anyone but yourself is nearly impossible these days.

#

straight to spam folder

#

You would use a service for the sending part

scenic radish
#

One suggestion would be to set up dynamic DNS unless you have a static WAN IP. Would also recommend dual-stack (set up a AAAA record with your server's global ipv6 address)

night zodiac
#

but you can accept

tame sand
night zodiac

I think I use mailgun these days but I can't remember
