I dont get AWS lightsail Containers
a nano node with 512 MB RAM 0.25 vCPUs and data transfer quota of 500 GB cost 7$wile a instance with 4x the CPU power and double transfer rate for 3,50$?
Ok I think I just can't trust anything in my house anymore. I knew I should probe it, but figured if the electrician went so far as to mark line and load, they'd be correct. Nope.
Doesn't Lightsail also start at tree fiddy?
Plans starting at $3.50 per month
And this sounds better than having to run an EC2 and still have to deal with certificate management and Route53:
Additionally, Lightsail load balancers include integrated certificate management, providing free SSL/TLS certificates that can be provisioned and added to a load balancer in just a few clicks. You can request and manage certificates directly from the Lightsail console – and we manage renewals on your behalf.
I haven't found a need to use Lightsail so far but it doesn't sound awful.
just "need" a IRC bridge.
Little pissed that cloud init doees not work, but the web ssh console is nice.
I would pay more with my ISP for a public IP.. and my transfer speed sucks at home.
This is making me hungry: https://www.reddit.com/r/GifRecipes/comments/kugrtp/jalapeno_popper_pigs_in_a_blanket/
Can't you cook?
If I demanded my wife cook for me every time I got hungry, I wouldn't have a wife.
I can cook, lol. I used to be a cook. I rather not cook.
she just does groceries so I need her to buy things.
I am actually out of practice at the moment. I had a sprint of cooking a lot a few months ago but have been buying new things to play with.
sous vide machine in the mail for tomorrow and ann unrelated rack of lamb in the freezer
I'm going to sous vide some steaks tomorrow though. nummy
which part
Sous vide steaks...
steak or lamb
Isn't that basically boiled steak?
lol, I have a torch I use for dabbing and cast iron
blow torch
Or just ask my Gran 😉
sous vide for steak is often followed up with a torch or grill
But it'll be cooked right through if you use a sous vide, right?
Feels like a lot of effort when searing it for 1-2 minutes on each side on a griddle gets you the perfect steak.
you control the temp of the water very nicely to where it doesn't get super cooked
If the inside is cooked at all, it's basically ruined 🤣
I like medium rare on the rarish side and it will be a learning experience
Still looks overdone to me
I can still hear the plaintiff moos' from the abattoir in the first pic
If a good vet couldn't bring it back to life, it's overcooked.
Yeah, that's the picture that I thought still looks overdone. There's no blood coming out of it.
okay
I like the outside charred and the inside just a little bloody 🙂
But to each their own.
I like the texture when it is cooked just a bit more
I haven't actually tried sous vide cooking. I just got the impression it would result in a thoroughly cooked steak.
I hope not. I usually throw my steaks in the freezer for like an hour before I cook it so I can get a better outside without cooking inside. I haven't cooked steaks in a while though
I've never frozen them first, I just cook them straight outta the fridge so the inside stays cool.
Our local supermarket often has multi-buy deals on steak, so I pick them up whenever there's a deal on. Sometimes they even include fillet in the deal.
Two fillet steaks for £7 is something I'll never pass up.
Some homemade peppercorn sauce and fresh veg... mmm.
Where's the myoglobin from?
ur mum
no u
I have the service where I can get steaks straight from the meat boys
Meat Boys™️
Ah, so myoglobin is almost like hemoglobin, just in muscle.
that sounds like a porno
once it is possible to get a freezer, I'll have half a mooer in my house
We had a flyer through the door the other day for a company that does 'exotic' meats. They had stuff like kangaroo steaks. I'm tempted to try some of their stuff.
see if you have any delivery farmer markets in your area. Might be some exotic farms near you
62701 as zip to see what I see
lol online farmer markets
they all meet up once a week and then they deliver the shit for other nerds in their area
we have farmer markets here every week. sure some have some kind of online thing but it's mostly just some parking lot thing
yeah, parking lot has always been the way but I like the delivery
At the moment, I'd take the delivery over the in-person shopping experience.
yeah, our walmart gets loaded into our trunk, kroger comes to house, farmers market to house
when it comes to produce and such, i'd rather look before i buy lol
fo sho. there are ratings tied directly to the name of the meat you're getting so it is a little less random
PRIDE
haha, yeah, too bad I can't get one yet :/
just don't buy a 2018 or any made within the last 20 years and you will be good to go

Sure. What's up?
Can we talk instead of type
Sorry, I do not have a microphone on this computer.
Sorry ... Thought there was a chat room
There's the #755367578381058178 channel
Almost nobody uses it though 😉
If there's ever someone in there, they're just lost
@deft pewter Hehe.
I usually disconnect folks if they are just alone in that server for too long
yes

#330990055533576204 can tell you more
Tried ... To install on a pi 3 getting errors ... There is an image for pi 3 but I get errors
@hushed basalt I didn't look at it /remindme 16h
@fathom prairie you can run Docker on RPi. With Docker, HA installation is just one line of command. You don’t have to mess with anything.
@last plaza HassOS is (was) supposed to be the one you don't need to mess with anything 😅

Well, you better head over to your installation channel then

hockey pucks dont even have internet
Your hockey puck sucks then!
@heavy ginkgo that's ok. I'm just doing a local install
Hockey puck 4+
Don't need the cloud
hockey pucks are air gapped
With usb 8.1
No, I got the apple variant. Lightning.
apple makes hockey pucks ? does California even have a team in the NHL?
Ok I got it to ping. Just had to drop it on a pan
Try flashing the bios
But the sd card flew off and now it can't be located
hockey14.bin
im really confused by the post on reddit,
The one about installing the custom component for snowballing?
someone was asking about HA support on a treatlife light switch. Someone responded and said they'd never let an insecure device like that on their network. but then recommended that they flash them with tuya-convert.
Yeah, tasmota ftw
it still seems rather ironic lol
Why?
^ thats one strange peacock
I DEMAND AN ANSWER
because you're just trading platforms, if you're exposing the device to the internet, its still going to be insecure regardless of the firmware you're flashing on it. Local device issues on the board or firmware are pretty non-existent unless you're allowing public access to your home on a regular basis.
Tasmota only reaches out to the internet for NTP, and you could just run your own local NTP server
before tasmota, you can see the device chatting away to remote servers. tasmota fixes that.
And you can block its internet access and it still functions properly
that said, i'm not disputing that the firmware is superior to tpllink/treatlife, especially since you can use it in HA
it's also on github
HitGub
there's plenty of mitigations to make an insecure device secure with network mitigations, but thats just my point. its ironic to say not to put tp-link/treatlife in your network and to flash them ( which i agree with flashing them). but the same mitigations can be applied to either.
though they wont work in HA, so it's pointless. i'd prefer a cheap switch that i'd flash to begin with.
I rushed to make a bunch of automations right before bed last night and managed to mess them all up
I'd expect nothing less from you, Bu.

I have a breaker box related question. If I have two thick wires coming in along with ground, do I only monitor one of the black wires using CT clamp to determine the power consumption or do I need to monitor both black wires?
Yes
on...?
I love answering “yes” when people ask question with two different options.
Question: Is it a red wire or a black wire?
Answer: Yes. 🤣
@fallen furnace you just need one black/live wire
Alright. Just wanted to confirm
That thing is not going to blow up. There is nothing wrong in trying different options.
Oh I know, it's just a pain having to open up the breaker box and shove the CT clamp on a thick cable
can you link me the clamps you have?
if you have something with 2 clamps and have merica power, you need a third clamp or you will only get every other breaker
unless it states other magic
that does not look like it is meant for a breaker box
That's for like a single device which would be 2 wire at that point.
it's a CT clamp
makes sense to put it in a central location
AKA load center
AKA breaker box
right, only goes around the "line" for a breaker
Was thinking things like that would make good measurement devices for power consumption for stuff like washing machine, dishwasher, etc
oooh, I didn't think about this for some reason. I searched for monitoring plugs for some reason but didn't think about the clamps.
@last cedar that's exactly what they're for
Of course, said appliance needs its own breaker
But that is pretty standard these days, when redoing stuff
the ones that actually use a lot of power usually do
yee, dryer and stove are required unless you want 🔥
Some clamps are nice atx...
Also, smart meter can't show power consumption of a specific device, only total
the ones that were linked above, I looked at other reviews and people said they start to buzz when used on a single appliance, lol
have you seen the ones from schneider electric?
they are magic $$$ looking things
adds to amazon wishlist
Only up to 6000A tho
DAMN
Atx would need at least 4
😛
It shouldn't be a closed system though
If it had an api I would be all over it, depending on price
I'm just glad someone has started it in some form so maybe one day I can afford one
I want to measure dishwasher, washer, dryer, so not everything
We don't even have a dryer atm
oh no
I bought a ton of temp sensors and they need ESP's so I can just add some ghetto wire to my CLAMPS
UPS can report via NUT
Maybe actually water heater would be nice to know
And then a total current usage on each phase
yeah, I have NUT. works very well that I forget about it
So I don't pay for larger fuses than needed
Need to redo fuse box in all houses I looked at
Most houses are not earthed, and no rcd
So redo the entire system
Only certain rooms earthed. My ups will just nope out
Yeah, ceramic round things
They in themselves are no problem
Just that they can't be reset

They probably won't until we kill Skype

i bet document revisions are fun for you then 😛
The only documentation I do are low-level designs and cabling diagrams thankfully
the majority of the team i am on are pretty technical in nature, so it's fairly easy. But, occasionally we need to work with people outside of our team and they end up emailing documents via email when we have systems designed for real time document revisions :/
I've done some document revisions in realtime for some excel, that is fun with 50 users at the same time

Lol wtf
oh no, he just broke his machine
@deft pewter @clever mortar if you want some blades I ordered two different ones today and the price was the same for 100 and 10 so I will probably have a lot of spare ones
I've got over a year's supply already
Amusingly Amazon suggest I should buy another 50 every other month.... 😂
I ordered the Derby Extra that I've been happy with and the new Derby USTA that had great reviews, 5 and 6 £ each for 100
I've got Gillette, though the Derby's are fine too IMO
Amazon are wrong. 25 blades a month is nuts, even if you're shaving almost every day.
yay poo pipe is cleared
I'm good, thanks. Got several year's worth already 😄
Monthly for me, depending on how often the wife complains.
the rest of the time I just hit it with the balding clippers
I'm too lazy to shave but she doesn't like me hairy.

i am looking to monitor in HA if the level of water in a drainage bucket reaches the top. i came across this: https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/a1jejn/sump_pit_sump_pump_water_level_sensor_using_wemos/ which i thought was quite clever based on its simplicity. any of you tinkerer types who are good with esp8266 can confirm this will work?
ive come across similar projects but they use additional sensors, one uses an additional resistor, i thought this one was interesting because they are directly putting the bare wires into the water
i was thinking since i only need to know when the level gets too high i can just tape the ground wire and a digital pin wire to the top of the bucket and let the water complete the circuit
ok Cool thanks i will post there
meh, I don't feel like updating my unifi passwords right now. someone reminds me later
No
oN: eroideT
which one of you nerds can answer some questions about IP phones?
@hushed basalt oi, seems like that's up your alley
lmao
what?
his name
he's really a telco tech though
like office phones or turning landline phones into a voip?
in Straya
I figured, I like like the "bad" part.
office phones
Ask away
is there a situation whereby I can buy a phone that I can use on whatever network as long as it's got a RJ45 connection?
my wife's office is going all remote but they're not providing any virtual telco stuff
Like a VOIP phone?
and I'll be damned if she's going to use either her cell phone or our VOIP line to give out to clients (prisoners) or other attorneys
my VOIP experience is extremely limited
Google voice number boi
And configure the account directly in the phone
It's free
We don't have google voice here
I used to use a service called Grasshopper for voicemails and all sorts of things separate from work but might be a bit too much
you can have multiple gvoice numbers going to the same phone
But you're not the one asking for a solution
I don't want to have to fuck around with making sure she follows all the steps to make a call via google voice vs her regular phone
just want something she can pick up and it's a totally different number
I'd just buy a yealink handset
AND it'd do vmail
I don't think there is any "steps"
And get a voip provider that does voicemail
maybe hitting a button before calling out at most
https://grasshopper.com/virtual-phone-number/ This is what I used in the past with success. It had a dedi app for their phone stuff.
Put it in the web admin of the phone
yealink looks like it needs that gateway thing
Then you have a seperate phone that just works
Nah you can put accounts directly in
many traditional phones have a switch for line 1 and line 2 as is, you just put the gvoice on line 2 and thats that
so just by a SIP somewhere that's got voicemail?
You might need upnp or port forwarding on your router
Yep
Most should do voicemail to email too
the goal is she may eventually have a shared office
I'd want her to be able to take whatever into the office and it work there too
grasshopper was nice because I could set up extensions and then easily transfer people to numbers I used often
or they could just automatically talk to someone else other than me, lol
As long as the office provider has the network flexible enough
There's probably no way to bring a voip phone into an office without some collaboration from IT
https://www.amazon.com/Yealink-W60P-Dect-Handset-Package/dp/B076WVZY2P/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=yealink&qid=1610404313&s=electronics&sr=1-2 so it looks like that bridge is just for the RF to the phone
My strong preference is for corded phones
at home I've got no hardwired network upstairs
so I'd have to string cable to accomplish that
The DECT stuff is pretty crappy tbh
or put a switch on this damn "range extender" that acts as a bridge
SUCK MY DECT
so this Fisher Price "My first VOIP" phone would get the job done?
looks like yes
I'd try for a t42s
1426130622701024543.png
This is what account registration looks like inside the phone
so just needs 5060 out
Voip can get a bit tricky,
That's just for registration, but actually voice data goes on other ports
depends on when the last time it was unspun/unknotted
haha
that was my favorite game as a kid
untangle the phone cord
I think my aqara motion sensor I put on my porch is picking up every car that drives by. It needs a new position.
or a blinder
I have just managed to set it up in the worst possible way
Wrap it in duct tape and the cars won't be a problem.
I didn't think it was that sensitive
Mine picks things up across the street. When it works...
@hushed basalt got any recommendations on a SIP provider?
I can probably just aim it down more
Sorry you'd need a local one
Same coast as you
I'd see if your ISP has one, you could try that
@night zodiac car windows reflect light
So they blast your porch with light.

Then get 20 cats
I am going to try a vibration sensor on my trash cans. I ordered one for the mailbox but might audible that to the trashcans
getting my hungry
yeah, I'll let you know how the vibration sensor goes
hopefully the mail lady doesn't yoink it off
I actually did think about making a laser trip wire but didn't want it looking sketchy
yeah, haha
Postal service love DIY devices
Apparently they're more acceptable when mounted to a pistol with a bump stock and tactical grips.
sounds like my gmod file from way back when
yay, only took me 10 minutes to remove the adhesive from this sensor
thumb rubbing intensifies
I think you're the only one still watching star trek, it's okay. jk
I'm sure there are dozens of you
only seen the first season they released on cable
it's certianly not as good at the originals but it had some interesting points
ST:D is great. I love that it's a bit different from the others... I guess that's just kinda what they do.
oh, I felt like he was coming after me
Looking forward to more Picard too, assuming there's another season.
i hadn't seen picard but everything i read said that was a trainwreck into a dumpster fire
It wasn't your typical Star Trek series. Just a story set in the Star Trek universe.
But it was enjoyable.
they said it made picard look weak and old
He... is weak and old.
He's like 90 years past retirement age, with all the bodily failures that come with old age.
But he gets drawn into events that he can't ignore.
He's not a Federation captain anymore. He doesn't have a crew or a ship of his own. That's what I mean by it not being a typical ST show.
|| boobs ||
It's almost a sci-fi crime show in the ST universe.
Oof. Another reason not to like Ubiquiti... they just had a data breach and can't rule out that user data was leaked.
yeah, that is why I was saying to remind me to change my passwords, lol. deir host
Following Troy Hunt on Twitter means hearing a lot more about these breaches, not just the ones you're actually affected by
Slow history, slow running of automations. RPi4 4GB, 64GB Samsung Endurance MicroSD card. Any ideas what might be the issue? Also the whole webinterface can be laggy sometimes. It's not always the case. Sometimes lights (through automation) go on within a second, sometimes 5s or longer? Also history loading can be 2-3s or sometimes 10-15s. What could cause this?

500 bucks for a modern arcade cabinet that is smaller/shorter and hosting older games is a complete rip off.
the originals didn't even cost that much
infact when arcades started phasing out you could pick up many of them for around 100 bucks
I always wanted one of those dance machines...
DDR, lol
I suspect arcade cabinets were pretty expensive new
Adjusted for inflation
You can't compare the used cost of them during the bust of arcade
coin operated machines were around 3k brand new but they were commercial bought only
and the games they hosted was also new
Ouch. That would've been a lot.
not for a business

the broadlink humidity sensor seems to read a bit high in my comparisons to the bme280
talking about that pro sensor built into the cable?
yeah, the mistake buy 😛
mine has been fairly accurate
I'll compare it to another bme I already have soldered up and see what she says
some time
gotta make sure they are next to each other since humidity can vary
yeah, might just be that. they are about 2 feet from each other but one is hanging out of the outlet and one is lying against the tv stand or something I think
I don't really want to use it, 'just curious about the readings but I will try to get the closer for fun
Not too close or you'll end up with more than 2 of them.

Never had a monitor connected to my Pi - been running for at least a year....
Ehh, nothing wrong with having a spare
Or when you lock yourself out by changing the ssh config. Not as if that has happened to me before. 🤔
Thankfully you can tell SSHd to reload the config while running, and then test your changes before you disconnect
hello everyone

🙂
I am looking at an 8 channel relay board with esp8266 on ebay.
Is it OK to post link in here for your thoughts?
It’s fine!
I am trying to make sure I can run tasmota on this board
It appears to have a Wemos D1 Mini (I only see D1 listed though)
#diy-archived, or the Tasmota Discord, would be better places to ask IMO
Ok Thanks
Please read the channel topic 😉
If you're asking about the #integrations-archived with HA @eager geyser then you want to ask over there
yay, I automated my humidifier based off of outside temp like a 🐦
of course it is like the warmest day in a long while so the MATH isn't even used
designer: make it look like this
me: puts the design into the app
designer: this is too wide, make it more narrow
me: makes it more narrow
designer: no, not that narrow
yeah, I hate that shit. I always sent two versions. One with something super fucked that way they chose the one I wanted
I am glad I don't design any more
I feel for you in so many ways
"this screen needs to look special, not like the other screens in the app"
cool, that's real useful
"this uses the exact same component that's used to render this everywhere else in the app"
"it looks different"
the ol' icepick in the eye
Hi everyone, I would like to integrate HA with some software for tracking the best before date of food. Do you know if there is something available?
Please read the channel topic 😉
you can ask in #integrations-archived
okkkk 🙂 Thanks you
Yeah, but then you need to remember to enter the dates for everything as you shelve it... that's not gonna happen 😄
How about ocr scanner that scans barcode and best before date
So it knows what you bought and when said thing goes bad
I don't think I have updated my zzh since I bought it, lol. I am staring at my map thinking of stuff and I am dumb.
i did NOT fuck up giving it to whole school as akid
@clear ferry 🤣
Ah, the edgemeister is back.
I need the blues clues mail time song as rtttl
I think my mailbox vibration sensor will work
hopefully it stays together, I might have bbroke it
welp, I think the wind is blowing it around, lol
which vibration sensor do you have? i have an aqara one and the plastic pieces holding it together broke pretty easily.
or neighbors car starting
it is aqara but I was trying to pry it apart from the adhesive and fooked it
lots of force
should have got screwdriver
exactly what I did!
i have it bound together with electrical tape
now that I think about it, I wonder if the electrical tape is shielding its signal
I might just glue it together and buy a new one when battery dies
or deal with glue in future
I don't want it to look weird to mail lady
trex tape won in a 1v1 vs the plastic clip I guess
The more wires you leave sticking out, the less sus it looks. They're used to it.
I think the mailbox quit talking to me, lol
I'm not surprised
Your mail box left you?
I'm going to leave it and see if it magically connects to the repeater I put on my porch instead of the shti far away
Lora Lora Lora @night zodiac
Who's Lora?
"You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat." Sending data over long dist

I am trying to buy something premade so mail lady doesn't talk to me
Doesn't get much smaller than this:
she already talks to me too much
THANKS GUYS
I SEENT THAT SHIT
I was trying to see premade stuff only as I have said 😛
I need some enclosed shit for outside

Outside? Put it inside your mailbox.
Enclose it yourself!
I'mma put it in a tictac box

No-one said you had to attach a friggin battery to your nads.
under the toilet seat is all I need
Ouch. Lift them clear before you lower the seat.
I wouldn't normally kink shame but you're odd.
fiberglass pencils are awesome to get dead battery goo out again, just dont worry and yolo that box
my mailbox is back online.
I wonder what kind of kinky shit this vibration sensor is into so I can get it to change router
kinky shit under the toilet seat?
thanks! ❤️
time to go out into the cold for the 20th time today. neighbors haven't called cops yet
screw driver in mailbox
I might have just deleted my doorbell
Delete yo self

uff.. so many Verschwörungsschwurbler
Its not even a decent messaging app, the API is cool to use (thanks for the infinite storage lol) but the 450M schould have gone somewhere else
25 million in 3 days... it's almost like another messaging app / social network just closed.
say that to my face
How many of those 25 million are rednecks. 🤔
SAY THAT TO MY FACE
Y'all
I am joking, lmao
Watch the rules yall

probably the whatsapp shizzle
aka we now can use usr data for our coustomers something
I have a bit of a split between signal and keybase
oh yea, ll miss that platform
Which one? Parler?
never heard of keybase
Same idea. Secure text but you control your keys
Match dot com
Why I have to think of the VPN company wich stored your passwords in cleartext
I like the storing of my own keys idea
Horse staple battery pole
you having a stroke?
Xkcd reference
awww
Haha
I have to use a telephone to register, I dont like that too much
Hmm I don't remember now
Probably to force some 2fa to start though
If you add your email you can remove your phone number
still to less privacy
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
but that is crying on a high level
Or make a new one only for this
God deam, owned by Zoom , I just started caring for you...Keybase is basically a GoT character now
when I eat spicy hot sauce, my eye lids start sweating
feels neat with a ceiling fan
My scalp sweats when I eat spicy food lol
Zoom recently purchased them to help fix their encryption
Spicy foods?
yes Tediore Zoom purchased Spicy foods so you can reassure your face sweats will have the proper encryption
How thoughtful 🥰
time to start putting your 3d printers to some use lol https://youtu.be/rXCHn9B5dH0
I built a kinetic art table that erases whenever it completes a pattern. Cruel but it likes it.

Another presentation of "Transient 2" as seen on a flat panel with a DIY "Ambilight" setup. Thanks to Tyler Savage who supplied the background video and uploaded here with permission - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJf9ORiWqS8
Original "Transient 2" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tq1mxZZIuIY
If you have a similar DIY LED example of th...
Dustin Farrell made this Transient 2 video and gave me permission a while back to use it. Generated a lot of traffic after he posted it to his channel as well. People have been asking for a how to video, I’ve been slacking a little bit, but I’m finally making the how to video for this setup over the next few days if anyone is interested.
I use WLED, I’m a bit new to home assistant, but I’ll probably be throwing that into the mix in this video.
It’s audio reactive too!
that's really slick looking
hmmm....
it's just.... probably an unpopular opinion but I don't get it
its just fast 'n furious with your TV, to each their own I guess
immersion 😄
hows it going, phnx? long time no talk
working, automating... same here, been having a few beers and listening to music
the sam adams winter lager special from the local convenience store
ah nice
it's not quite the quality of a good local brew but it'll do
local brew
nice
where I live still lacks availability of local brews
they are here, just not as convenient as i'd like
I usually just have it on teal or purple 90% of the time
It’s easy on the eyes at night.
yeah, we're pretty spoiled in Charlotte, NC
lots of breweries and lots distribute to the grocery stores
But when I’m cleaning the house and blast music and make the Lights react. Kind of gives me some energy I guess
Thank you very much
i've been going the dumb bulbs, smart switches route so that doesn't lend itself to RGB
i guess i'm just old, my daughter would probably really dig it tho @alpine spear 😄
yeah I have done the same @wet pilot, using shellys for most of my switches
i have the GE zwave for the most part. though that's coming to bite me with the 1.6 stuffs
i do need to get some dimming stuff tho
i like their fan controllers though
I really like zwave stuff, thinking about getting some of the 3-way switches that don't require an extra switch, I don't think GE does that though
Ambilight is nice for certain things. But most the time I just like a dim ambient lighting at night.
my 2yo would probably lose her mind
I kind of started dedicating towards Z wave as of recently. I like it
im using the gocontrol zwave thermostats and they have been solid
i have the gocontrol garage door controller. its been decent
you using zwave2mqtt?
I have a bunch of relays and esp’s, motion sensors and stuff. I keep telling myself I’m going to start using ESP home one day. I’m an electrician, I should’ve already converted everything by now. I’ve been distracted
nah, still using built in zwave because lazy
I actually started out with Smartthings and Alexa. Now my smart things hub is pretty much just a Z wave and zig bee controller. And home assistant or Alexa routines take care of everything
the gocontrols using zwave2mqtt didn't quite translate properly to HA climate so I ended up using appdaemon to listen to MQTT and publish MQTT that worked natively with the mqtt climate integration
extra work but no issues so far
i have appd running but i haven't re-done everything for v4
i can't imagine you'd have to redo anything by upgrading but i don't know for sure
nah, i tried and things broke so i pinned a version on my container and haven't followed up
ah ok
I feel like I still have so much to learn. I’m a great electrician and can tell you everything about wiring and how to hide things or keep it up to code. But when it comes to all this automation, yaml, and learning how to use home assistant.. I’m a little slow with it lol
i ended up going deep into AD, use it for all of my automations
Like all you guys have these acronyms that I’m like fuck now I got to go Google that
i have almost everything in AD. Only thing i skipped on is my holiday lights because that's too basic
hahaha
AppDaemon
@alpine spear i have done a lot of low voltage in the past, not an electrician but one skill missing from my tool belt is the ability to bend some conduit, so i picked up a bender and some EMT, going to give it a shot
I used WLED for Christmas this year lol
noice
Conduit is my love
drools
my issue is that i am not good with measurments
Need some solar?
Lol that’s one of two parking garages at the Apple Campus in Cupertino
good with computers, understand electrical circuits pretty well, very handy in general but I have never bent a single piece of conduit
nice
The main key is to keep a lot of foot pressure on that bender’s shoe. That’s how you avoid kinking your bends
i think i'll be ok with that part, my main issue will be measurements
I’ve always worked in commercial or industrial places, but the quarantine took me down a rabbit hole and I learned all about arduinos, LED’s, low volt stuff
bend then cut
i guess box offsets are arbitrary, what do you recommend, 2-3" ?
I feel like a wizard now
i've always wanted to get into arduino but have never had a project to try it with
Box off since I usually flip the bender upside down so the shoe is up in the air, and a slightly pull down on the conduit with a lot of pressure near the bender’s shoe. About 5°
Then slide the pipe through until your bend just pokes out of the bender, And give it another little 5°
yeah but how many inches from where it goes into the box?
also odd because all the videos I have seen show box offsets being done at 10-degrees
The end of your bender’s shoe about an inch from the end of the pipe
I don't really understand why people say "dynamodb is flexible"
Omg my voice text is going to shit lately
It's really not
10° is fine, but you just have to keep your bends really close together
Do you have a conduit bending chart?
30° is always the best. You just multiply your offset by 2 and that’s how far your bend marks are apart from each other
pretty sure i can acquire all of the bending chart information on the interwebz 🙂
probably just store it in a dynamodb for convenience
Segmented bends are really cool. We don’t get to do them often, but I did a ton at this winery. You mark the pipe 30 times equally spaced, and bend it 3° on each mark. Then you end up with a giant, smooth 90°
Yeah honestly when I forget stuff I just grab my phone and Google it real quick. Thank God there’s an app for the segmented bends lol
Longboi
IBend is a great app. Super easy to fine tune the angles, to make it fit the way you want. You can just move a slider to change your bends even by 1° and it constantly tells you the updated math/bend spacing.
I love tech lol. The old timers on jobs HATED those apps for a while. But they hate all technology
And their wives
I actually used my iPhones level app to bend conduit. We had electric vendors that you said the pipe in and just hit the button and bends the pipe to whatever degree want
When they saw me holding my phone on the pipe it would drive them nuts.
But you could walk up to a conveyor line set your phone on it tap the screen, zeroed it out, then put your phone on the slope and know exactly what degree do you need
Pretty cool
Nice! Klein, attaboy
yeah i have a lot of klein stuff
I actually just bought the same bender for a side job last week
I used to manage a low voltage company now I have my own IT company but I still like to get my hands dirty
The nice thing about union, is we just bring the hand tools that are on the tool list. The contractor supplies all the power tools and bender’s and stuff
(at home)
Haha
im just tired of running schedule 40 because of my noobness
I have so many tools now, especially since I’ve been trying to acquire side work during this quarantine lol
makes sense
Do you only need 3/4”?
right now yes but eventually i'll get into bending larger pipe
You can still bend half inch in a three-quarter bender. Just make sure you use the three-quarter multipliers for your offsets
Was just thinking if you wanted to practice on smaller pipe or something.
yeah that too
