I dont get AWS lightsail Containers
a nano node with 512 MB RAM 0.25 vCPUs and data transfer quota of 500 GB cost 7$wile a instance with 4x the CPU power and double transfer rate for 3,50$?

chilly nymph
#

Ok I think I just can't trust anything in my house anymore. I knew I should probe it, but figured if the electrician went so far as to mark line and load, they'd be correct. Nope.

deft pewter
#

Doesn't Lightsail also start at tree fiddy?

Plans starting at $3.50 per month

#

And this sounds better than having to run an EC2 and still have to deal with certificate management and Route53:

Additionally, Lightsail load balancers include integrated certificate management, providing free SSL/TLS certificates that can be provisioned and added to a load balancer in just a few clicks. You can request and manage certificates directly from the Lightsail console – and we manage renewals on your behalf.

#

I haven't found a need to use Lightsail so far but it doesn't sound awful.

just "need" a IRC bridge.
Little pissed that cloud init doees not work, but the web ssh console is nice.
I would pay more with my ISP for a public IP.. and my transfer speed sucks at home.

I can cook, lol. I used to be a cook. I rather not cook.

I am actually out of practice at the moment. I had a sprint of cooking a lot a few months ago but have been buying new things to play with.

sous vide machine in the mail for tomorrow and ann unrelated rack of lamb in the freezer

I'm going to sous vide some steaks tomorrow though. nummy

Sous vide steaks...

deft pewter

Isn't that basically boiled steak?

lol, I have a torch I use for dabbing and cast iron

How do you get the outside charred and the inside raw?

#

You know, like a real steak.

night zodiac

clever mortar
#

Or just ask my Gran 😉

scenic radish
#

sous vide for steak is often followed up with a torch or grill

deft pewter
#

But it'll be cooked right through if you use a sous vide, right?

#

Feels like a lot of effort when searing it for 1-2 minutes on each side on a griddle gets you the perfect steak.

night zodiac
#

you control the temp of the water very nicely to where it doesn't get super cooked

deft pewter
#

If the inside is cooked at all, it's basically ruined 🤣

I like medium rare on the rarish side and it will be a learning experience

deft pewter
#

Yeah, that's the picture that I thought still looks overdone. There's no blood coming out of it.

night zodiac
#

okay

deft pewter
#

I like the outside charred and the inside just a little bloody 🙂

#

But to each their own.

night zodiac
#

I like the texture when it is cooked just a bit more

deft pewter
#

I haven't actually tried sous vide cooking. I just got the impression it would result in a thoroughly cooked steak.

night zodiac
#

I hope not. I usually throw my steaks in the freezer for like an hour before I cook it so I can get a better outside without cooking inside. I haven't cooked steaks in a while though

deft pewter
#

I've never frozen them first, I just cook them straight outta the fridge so the inside stays cool.

#

Our local supermarket often has multi-buy deals on steak, so I pick them up whenever there's a deal on. Sometimes they even include fillet in the deal.

Two fillet steaks for £7 is something I'll never pass up.

night zodiac
#

ANSWER THEM

scenic radish
#

I DEMAND AN ANSWER

heavy ginkgo
# scenic radish Why?

because you're just trading platforms, if you're exposing the device to the internet, its still going to be insecure regardless of the firmware you're flashing on it. Local device issues on the board or firmware are pretty non-existent unless you're allowing public access to your home on a regular basis.

scenic radish
#

Tasmota only reaches out to the internet for NTP, and you could just run your own local NTP server

night zodiac
#

before tasmota, you can see the device chatting away to remote servers. tasmota fixes that.

scenic radish
#

And you can block its internet access and it still functions properly

heavy ginkgo
#

that said, i'm not disputing that the firmware is superior to tpllink/treatlife, especially since you can use it in HA

night zodiac
#

it's also on github

scenic radish
#

HitGub

heavy ginkgo
#

there's plenty of mitigations to make an insecure device secure with network mitigations, but thats just my point. its ironic to say not to put tp-link/treatlife in your network and to flash them ( which i agree with flashing them). but the same mitigations can be applied to either.

#

though they wont work in HA, so it's pointless. i'd prefer a cheap switch that i'd flash to begin with.

People have been asking for a how to video, I’ve been slacking a little bit, but I’m finally making the how to video for this setup over the next few days if anyone is interested.

It’s audio reactive too!

sour escarp

#

they are here, just not as convenient as i'd like

alpine spear
#

It’s easy on the eyes at night.

wet pilot
#

yeah, we're pretty spoiled in Charlotte, NC

#

lots of breweries and lots distribute to the grocery stores

alpine spear
#

But when I’m cleaning the house and blast music and make the Lights react. Kind of gives me some energy I guess

alpine spear
wet pilot
#

i've been going the dumb bulbs, smart switches route so that doesn't lend itself to RGB

sour escarp
#

i guess i'm just old, my daughter would probably really dig it tho @alpine spear 😄

#

yeah I have done the same @wet pilot, using shellys for most of my switches

wet pilot
#

i have the GE zwave for the most part. though that's coming to bite me with the 1.6 stuffs

sour escarp
#

i do need to get some dimming stuff tho

wet pilot
#

i like their fan controllers though

sour escarp
#

I really like zwave stuff, thinking about getting some of the 3-way switches that don't require an extra switch, I don't think GE does that though

alpine spear
#

Ambilight is nice for certain things. But most the time I just like a dim ambient lighting at night.

wet pilot
#

my 2yo would probably lose her mind

alpine spear
#

I kind of started dedicating towards Z wave as of recently. I like it

sour escarp
#

im using the gocontrol zwave thermostats and they have been solid

wet pilot
#

i have the gocontrol garage door controller. its been decent

sour escarp
#

you using zwave2mqtt?

alpine spear
#

I have a bunch of relays and esp’s, motion sensors and stuff. I keep telling myself I’m going to start using ESP home one day. I’m an electrician, I should’ve already converted everything by now. I’ve been distracted

wet pilot
#

nah, still using built in zwave because lazy

alpine spear
#

I actually started out with Smartthings and Alexa. Now my smart things hub is pretty much just a Z wave and zig bee controller. And home assistant or Alexa routines take care of everything

sour escarp
#

the gocontrols using zwave2mqtt didn't quite translate properly to HA climate so I ended up using appdaemon to listen to MQTT and publish MQTT that worked natively with the mqtt climate integration

#

extra work but no issues so far

wet pilot
#

i have appd running but i haven't re-done everything for v4

sour escarp
#

i can't imagine you'd have to redo anything by upgrading but i don't know for sure

wet pilot
#

nah, i tried and things broke so i pinned a version on my container and haven't followed up

sour escarp
#

ah ok

alpine spear
#

I feel like I still have so much to learn. I’m a great electrician and can tell you everything about wiring and how to hide things or keep it up to code. But when it comes to all this automation, yaml, and learning how to use home assistant.. I’m a little slow with it lol

sour escarp
#

i ended up going deep into AD, use it for all of my automations

alpine spear

i have almost everything in AD. Only thing i skipped on is my holiday lights because that's too basic

sour escarp
#

@alpine spear i have done a lot of low voltage in the past, not an electrician but one skill missing from my tool belt is the ability to bend some conduit, so i picked up a bender and some EMT, going to give it a shot

I used WLED for Christmas this year lol

wet pilot
#

noice

sour escarp
#

my issue is that i am not good with measurments

alpine spear

Lol that’s one of two parking garages at the Apple Campus in Cupertino

sour escarp
#

good with computers, understand electrical circuits pretty well, very handy in general but I have never bent a single piece of conduit

#

nice

alpine spear
#

The main key is to keep a lot of foot pressure on that bender’s shoe. That’s how you avoid kinking your bends

sour escarp
#

i think i'll be ok with that part, my main issue will be measurements

alpine spear
#

I’ve always worked in commercial or industrial places, but the quarantine took me down a rabbit hole and I learned all about arduinos, LED’s, low volt stuff

wet pilot
#

bend then cut

sour escarp
#

i guess box offsets are arbitrary, what do you recommend, 2-3" ?

alpine spear
#

I feel like a wizard now

wet pilot
#

i've always wanted to get into arduino but have never had a project to try it with

alpine spear
#

Box off since I usually flip the bender upside down so the shoe is up in the air, and a slightly pull down on the conduit with a lot of pressure near the bender’s shoe. About 5°

#

Then slide the pipe through until your bend just pokes out of the bender, And give it another little 5°

sour escarp
#

yeah but how many inches from where it goes into the box?

alpine spear
#

I’ve

#

Ohh*

sour escarp
#

also odd because all the videos I have seen show box offsets being done at 10-degrees

alpine spear
#

The end of your bender’s shoe about an inch from the end of the pipe

hushed basalt

indexing is stupid important

alpine spear

10° is fine, but you just have to keep your bends really close together

Do you have a conduit bending chart?

#

30° is always the best. You just multiply your offset by 2 and that’s how far your bend marks are apart from each other

pretty sure i can acquire all of the bending chart information on the interwebz 🙂

#

probably just store it in a dynamodb for convenience

Segmented bends are really cool. We don’t get to do them often, but I did a ton at this winery. You mark the pipe 30 times equally spaced, and bend it 3° on each mark. Then you end up with a giant, smooth 90°

#

Yeah honestly when I forget stuff I just grab my phone and Google it real quick. Thank God there’s an app for the segmented bends lol

IBend is a great app. Super easy to fine tune the angles, to make it fit the way you want. You can just move a slider to change your bends even by 1° and it constantly tells you the updated math/bend spacing.

#

I love tech lol. The old timers on jobs HATED those apps for a while. But they hate all technology

not surprising

I actually used my iPhones level app to bend conduit. We had electric vendors that you said the pipe in and just hit the button and bends the pipe to whatever degree want

#

When they saw me holding my phone on the pipe it would drive them nuts.

But you could walk up to a conveyor line set your phone on it tap the screen, zeroed it out, then put your phone on the slope and know exactly what degree do you need

Pretty cool

Nice! Klein, attaboy

I actually just bought the same bender for a side job last week

I used to manage a low voltage company now I have my own IT company but I still like to get my hands dirty

The nice thing about union, is we just bring the hand tools that are on the tool list. The contractor supplies all the power tools and bender’s and stuff

im just tired of running schedule 40 because of my noobness

alpine spear

I have so many tools now, especially since I’ve been trying to acquire side work during this quarantine lol

sour escarp
#

makes sense

alpine spear
#

Do you only need 3/4”?

sour escarp
#

right now yes but eventually i'll get into bending larger pipe

alpine spear
#

You can still bend half inch in a three-quarter bender. Just make sure you use the three-quarter multipliers for your offsets

#

Was just thinking if you wanted to practice on smaller pipe or something.

sour escarp
#

yeah that too
