pallid path
#

Hi all, I am curios about your idea about one issue? Do you think that blueprints are licensable or not?

forest edge
#

@pallid path HA BPs? not a chance in hell

pallid path
#

@scenic radish I appreciate your answer ๐Ÿ˜›

#

@forest edge yes! and why? I thought that they are way different than configuration. 1 - they have the ability configure HA to work as a special way and they are bearing the characteristic of its author

#

yes they are useless without HA

scenic radish
#

I suppose you could sell them if that's what you're getting after but good luck finding a buyer ๐Ÿ˜„

forest edge
#

the issue you run into is having legal rights to sue etc people who share said BP's

pallid path
#

hahah no no I am not looking for a new and shiny business opportunity (am I? :P) just a hypothetical question @scenic radish

scenic radish
#

Ah gotcha

pallid path
#

@forest edge I am curious because if we accept BP's as a software (= so it is licensable) we need to add a license section to it but I can't be sure that is it a piece of software or just a non-licensable text file

forest edge
#

don't believe it is considered "software"

#

it falls under the same as automations whatever else people can share through various means

subtle pasture
#

I mean, nothing stops you from slapping a license in as comments within the file...

deft pewter
#

Blueprints are as much software as my grocery list is software.

subtle pasture
#

GPL, BSD, etc

#

I can (and have) slapped a license on a PowerShell script, which is also useless without Microsoft's runtime environment

#

Seems like the same thing to me ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

deft pewter
#

Scripts are software. They only need the runtime to work.

forest edge
deft pewter
#

Blueprints need HA to work.

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter Right, but that has no bearing on putting your blueprint behind a license

deft pewter
#

Trying to enforce a license for a blueprint would be like trying to enforce a license for my config. No-one cares.

#

There's no IP there.

#

Hell, there's no I, let alone P.

forest edge
#

powershell is not an open source project?

scenic radish
#

Insert see, no one cares meme here

subtle pasture
#

I could easily see someone making a collection of nice blueprints and assigning a license to them

deft pewter
#

I could easily see someone laughing them right outta here ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

subtle pasture
#

Like, if I'm going to share a blueprint, I want to be able to GPL it

pallid path
#

@deft pewter thanks for your contrib. So if script does not find any binaries which needed for work is it non-copyrightable too?

deft pewter
#

But putting a GPL on it is the same as saying 'do what you want with it', no?

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter GPL requires attribution and sharing of any modifications made to the code

deft pewter
#

And I'm sure people always give attribution...

pallid path
#

Guys if nobody cares no one answers me ๐Ÿ˜›

subtle pasture
#

So you can't just rip it off, but your own name on it, and pretend it's yours

deft pewter
#

Gimme a minute to whack a GPL on this script I got that deletes all files in a folder.

forest edge
#

this is a dumb rabbit hole to dive down into lol

deft pewter
#

Really dumb...

pallid path
#

@subtle pasture the ha is not GPL hence bp's does not need to be gpl ๐Ÿ˜›

deft pewter
#

Something complex and original is IP.

scenic radish
#

No, we MUST argue about this.

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Not really. If you store your blueprints on Github, you'll probably assign a license to the repository

deft pewter
#

Something basic like a blueprint (that depends on something complex someone else wrote) isn't IP ๐Ÿค”

pallid path
#

YES YES @scenic radish ๐Ÿ˜„

hearty depot
#

@hushed basalt nope - we barly made it together

forest edge
#

@subtle pasture worthless license

subtle pasture
#

How so? I wrote something, I'm sharing it, and I'm sharing it with an agreement that requires X, Y, and Z. That's pretty standard...

forest edge
#

but x y z doesn't mean dick..

subtle pasture
#

Why not?

deft pewter
#

What exactly happens if someone 'breaches' a GPL? You get to sue because they 'didn't give you credit'?

forest edge
#

because you cannot legally enforce it

pallid path
#

@deft pewter I believe that being dependent or not dependent is not a requirement for an IP (at least in Europe)

subtle pasture
#

@deft pewter Probably small claims court, in this case

deft pewter
#

Right. Judge Judy will sort it.

#

So you'll get... $50 unless they give you credit?

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge The GPL has been proven enforceable time and time again

forest edge
#

not in this situation

deft pewter
#

Or maybe if they apologise nicely, there's no penalty.

#

Anyway... I think we can all agree that putting any form of license on something that's public ain't gonna do squat to stop someone using it or even sharing it as their own.

#

And with something as generic as HA blueprints, your stuff ain't identifiable.

subtle pasture
#

At the very least, I'd want to assign the BSD Public License to anything I release, which is basically "do whatever you want, but attribution to all prior authors is required"

pallid path
#

or I can distribute this BP over my very famous (208 followers it's something :P) youtube channel and earn money from video and the owner can ask money from this video ๐Ÿ˜›

#

so no offense

#

anyway I asked because in oracle vs google, Google claims that (very very reduced) headers are not copyrightable because they are worthless without actual code and it depends on actual software and Oracle said that there could be sophisticated solutions or scripts etc in headers which we can say that is copyrightable. I wonder that if its fits to BP's too

deft pewter
#

This is why I made the distinction between complex and simple solutions.

forest edge
#

placing "bluprint" in a automation yaml is not sophisticated code

deft pewter

Something complex is the product of someone's skill and experience. Something basic can be done by (and is likely to have already been done by) many people.

Just like you can't trademark commonly used phrases, why would a license be enforceable on something basic?

THIS EXACTLY. This is why I love WiFi, because so many products are ESP based, making them super easy to flash. I have a lot more control with custom firmware then I ever will with stock ZigBee firmware. With custom firmware I can turn the status light on the devices off, disable any onboard buttons it has if I want, or even (if it's a sensor) enable deep sleeping every five minutes.

#

Can use a partition not used for fire or burglary

subtle pasture
#

@last cedar Air quality sensors actually work really well for this, as long as you get one that's sensitive to ammonia (Most are sensitive to a specific range of VOCs, so you'll need to check the specs)

subtle pasture
#

I've honestly considered setting up an air quality sensor near the catbox, because it would be able to detect the presence of ammonia long before the levels get high enough for a human to smell it

#

You could get a notification to clean the litterbox long before it becomes an awful nightmare

last cedar
#

@subtle pasture thanks for the tip, sounds like a good solution to be honest. I guess I need to plan in cabling for sensors to the cat boxes when I pull cable.

@umbral agate ehh, but home assistant is designed to bring everything together regardless of protocol. I like WiFi for stuff like smart switches since they're so cheap and there are lots of options that can be flashed with Tasmota, but I like Zigbee for smart plugs and sensors (contact, motion, temperature, water leak, etc.) because of good battery life. I also prefer Zigbee for lighting because I don't want tons of extra WiFi clients and Philips Hue has some of the nicest hardware PWM I've ever seen

Oh I also like WiFi for smart plugs that control seasonal things like Christmas lights so that I don't mess with my Zigbee mesh when I put the decorations away

Same with Stockholm here

It's annoying. The mayor of London keeps crying and bitching about the damage it'll do to his city's economy. It's like he's totally oblivious to the damage it's done to the rest of the country.

Yeah, we do supply runs for the old folks, and the motorways in the first few weeks were great to drive on

deft pewter
#

I'm royally pissed off about this news ๐Ÿ˜

#

Brother in-law lives alone in another city, so sister in-law was going to drive and collect him. We now get the choice of bending the rules or leaving him out of our Christmas plans completely.

clever mortar
#

Yeah, they should have called this ages ago

deft pewter
#

Yup.

#

And I know the government don't really give a crap about our grocery shopping... but households have now either bought in too much because they were going to have guests or not bought in enough because they planned to go somewhere else.

#

Food waste on one side, panic buying on the other ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

clever mortar
#

Thankfully, we've been putting off buying the food for Christmas dinner ๐Ÿคฃ

I suppose at least it's handy that you have more than one person to talk to on a regular basis. Also that you still get a 'family' Christmas.

clever mortar

Well, we talk with the family all the time - face to face is just a little limited

deft pewter
#

Me and the missus have done pretty well at not getting on each other's nerves this year, which I'm honestly surprised at ๐Ÿคฃ But Christmas was going to be our one chance to unwind and finally spend some quality time with the rest of her family.

So yeah, 3 driveway visits this year and one meal back when households were allowed to mix.

clever mortar

Both ours are "somewhat older", and all have health issues, so we're doing our best to keep them in

Also lots of consumer ones, but they run MQTT over zigbee rather than over wifi ๐Ÿ˜‰

last kiln
#

Oh, is that how that works? I talked to a Zigbee engineer at a show once and he said zwave has the protocols built-in, and zigbee requires you to implement your own software layer. Or something like that.

#

This was like in 2014

subtle pasture
#

I mean, you don't have to use MQTT on a zigbee network, but it lends itself well to the wireless protocol with its small packet/header sizes

I don't see a dedicated support channel
That's a good one

Actually it is accurate. There isn't "a" dedicated support channel. There are like 42 different ones. Depending what you need support with.

clever mortar
#

And even a catch-all ๐Ÿ˜„

orchid rose

there's a group of channels called "support" though

last cedar

Yes absolutely

But where is the #my_racoon_is_broken support channel?

umbral agate
#

What software do y'all recommend for turning a pi zero into a CCTV camera? Motion? Or something else?

#

Also, does motioneye support mdns? I can't be asked to give all my cameras static IPs

deft pewter

mDNS ๐Ÿคข

#

DHCP reservations every time.

#

And I think Frigate is usually recommended... but you probably want to head over to #cameras-archived , as this is bound to turn into a support discussion.

hushed basalt
#

@umbral agate you just need to use fully qualified domain names

#

And have your router add dhcp leases to it's dns service

Add a domain to your router, then it's just hostname.domain.tld

Mdns ๐Ÿคข

Are you not able to replace the battery?

I haven't figured out what the issue is yet, but battery sounds plausible

True

Know Your Meme

Doomba refers a custom modified version of the autonomous vacuum cleaner Roomba with a weapon or an accessory attached to the top. The name is an amalgamation of the words โ€œdoomโ€ and โ€œRoombaโ€, which is meant to illustrate the machineโ€™s weaponized and deadly nature.

orchid rose

looks like I could just get a replacement battery from Ali for fairly cheap. Might as well try I guess

deft pewter
#

Yeah, new battery seems sensible if you're seeing low power after 2 years of power cycles.

orchid rose

it could be a sensor issue as well, it just gets stuck on walls sometimes

but I think it's because it doesn't have the power to push the collision sensor all the way

There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that. If you can't work out which is relevant, start in #general-archived

No politics, religion, or any other obviously contentious topics! Please ensure you've read the Code of Conduct (https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/), and #rules.
