4TB downloaded and back up and running before my wife even noticed

forest edge
#

true but as i said, for the m,ajority there isn't an issue lol

spark orchid
#

I don't have caps with Spectrum. At least not published. And I have somehow never hit their undocumented caps

forest edge
#

yea spectrum dosen't have caps.. not many do.. comcast did at one point but think that is gone now

subtle pasture
#

Oh, btw, if you're renting your modem from Comcast, you can use the hotspot for unlimited bandwidth 😛

#

Set up your router with multi-WAN and just run all your massive torrents and backups over Xfinity WiFi. lol

#

Granted, it's limited to 25mbps, but you'll never hit your cap again

forest edge
#

i think only the lower tier providers do caps.. those super cheap plans that are basically piggy backing main networks

subtle pasture
#

Comcast caps end-to-end. You need Comcast Business Class Internet to not have a cap

#

Or pay an extra $50 per month to remove the cap

forest edge
#

my friend on the east coast has comcast and he did have a cap at one point but it's gone now

subtle pasture
#

he should check again, Comcast just reinstated caps nation wide...

barren hound
#

yeah, during a pandemic where most people should be working from home

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I think we can all agree on one thing here: Fuck Comcast, and fuck data caps.

forest edge
#

link me where they said that.. i want to troll him

#

if he had a cap he would be bicthing about it

#

that much i know lol

subtle pasture
forest edge
#

is that refering to the mobile shit?

subtle pasture
#

Comcast doesn't do mobile...

forest edge
#

says wifi plan

#

whatever that is

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, no idea what that's about

#

They mean Xfinity internet, as a whole

forest edge
#

that sounds like either something mobile or maybe they have that city coverage wifi crap? where you don't even have a line ran to your home

subtle pasture
#

Again, comcast has no mobile service...

#

Their leased modems provide a wifi hotspot for xfinity customers, that's about as close as they get

#

But yeah, Comcast is rolling out a 1.2 TB data cap to 100% of its customers by Jan 1, 2021

forest edge
#

well most of these companies have "wifi hotspots" around a city to provide customers access on the go.. those same hotspots can be used to feed surrounding customers with jkust pure wifi access

#

and that is what sounds like is getting the cap

#

not the hardwired customers

subtle pasture
#

Nope, ALL customers

spark orchid
#

Spectrum calls all of their plans wifi plans because their leased modem has inbuilt wifi

#

That's probably what they are referring to

#

Because, again, the average user only knows so many tech vocab words

storm summit
#

Nor will the data cap apply to "Business Internet customers..."

#

comcast has had data caps here for many years.

subtle pasture
#

Right, but if you're paying for business class internet, you already knew that

#

And they also offer a $50/month add-on to get rid of data caps on the consumer plans

#

But either way, they want you to pay a fuck-ton for no data cap

storm summit
#

comcast used to be the best thing in town but ATT has them beat...as long as you hack their modems.

#

but still some people here can't get the good att plans and are stuck with comcast.

forest edge
#

comcast has always sucked major donkey dick.

#

i have alot of friends who has been stuck with them for years and they complained so much it's funny lol

spark orchid
#

Spectrum is my only option greater than 5Mbps, so I am happy they haven't gone completely to the dark side yet

#

@last dirge did you get the 2020.48.10 update?

last dirge
#

it prompted me for something earlier

last plaza
#

Ok

#

Just updated mine.

last dirge
#

anything interesting in it?

last plaza
#

Nothing major.

last dirge
#

that's the one it suggested

last plaza
#

Elon mentioned some cool updates coming in for Christmas update. I thought this is it. Apparently not.

spark orchid
#

Look at those BLAZING numbers

last dirge
#

the real cool stuff is HW3 cars

last plaza
#

Yup

spark orchid
#

What model do you guys have?

last dirge
#

3

last plaza
#

We’re 0.5 short of 3 😝

spark orchid
#

I am looking real hard at the Soul EV

#

The '21 model for the additional range

last dirge
#

that's over shit wifi 😉

spark orchid
#

My '10 Prius is no longer fun, and my daughter is about to need a car

last plaza
#

There are some Christmas Easter eggs in there I think.

last dirge
#

I'd highly recommend a model 3

#

or Y if you want something a little bigger

spark orchid
#

I can have those speeds... for another $80/month

#

I cannot find even a heavily used model 3 for the same money as a new Korean EV

#

Being in Texas, what few are here, are coveted

last dirge
#

just what I can see in that picture gives me anxiety

spark orchid
#

haha

#

I also like the Kona.

last dirge
#

that's a LOT of shit

spark orchid
#

And if I want truly affordable, the Bolt is always out there

last dirge
#

can't really compare the tech in any of those though

spark orchid
#

Nothing compares, in tech terms, to Tesla

last dirge
#

the Soul seems to have a decent sized battery

#

what's it cost?

spark orchid
#

The Soul? Should come in around $35k, the Kona is $38k, the Bolt is like $1.99 with Chevy's clearance deals

last dirge
#

I'd be worried about the Chev, honestly

#

they dumped the Volt

spark orchid
#

Did you read that the Mustang one has fake engine noises in the cabin?

last dirge
#

and it's ugly as shit

#

and costs the same as a Tesla

spark orchid
#

lol

last dirge
#

Soul and a Model 3 SR+ are about the same price

spark orchid
#

Chevy has made a HUGE investment in EV for upcoming model years. Interested to see what they pull off

last dirge
#

the eGolf is supposed to be pretty good

spark orchid
#

Just looked, used 2017 model 3's go for 45k within 150 miles of me

#

eGolf has a short range, I thought

last dirge
#

I dunno

#

you can get them dirt ass cheap though

spark orchid
#

I visit my mother frequently, and she lives 225 miles away. I need the range to cover that trip easily

last dirge
#

you probably wouldn't want that 2017 model 3

#

that's SUPER early production

#

you're not making that trip in that Kia without stopping on the way

#

what's it use for fast charging?

#

CCS?

spark orchid
#

Just says DC Fast Charging will be standard equipment

last dirge
#

download PlugShare

#

see what's around you

#

not knowing what plug it uses isn't useful 🙂

spark orchid
#

243 mile range (the over estimate), I figure a 15 minute fast charge halfway shouldn't be an issue

last dirge
#

it's CCS

#

looks like it can do up to 110kW, but I don't know how common that is

spark orchid
#

I was trying to locate specs, you google faster

last dirge
#

last time I supercharged I hit 130kW

spark orchid
#

what's the charge gained / 15mins at 130?

last dirge
#

I think I picked up 90 miles in 8 minutes

#

it's ridiculous

#

and that's not even V3 supercharging

spark orchid
#

So if I can find a 110kw charger along the way, I can easily get there

last dirge
#

Soul maxes out at 100

#

I think V3 supercharging is 180kW

spark orchid
#

That should be based on the 2020 model. The 2021 is getting Level 3 charging and the specs are still kinda hard to find

last dirge
#

what the car accepts isn't going to be your issue

#

what's available is going to be your issue

#

Teslas get the Supercharger access PLUS whatever else is available

#

download Plugshare

#

see what's around you

#

or I guess go to their website

spark orchid
#

There are 6 150kw CCS ports at the halfway point

last dirge
#

seems decent

#

if you're set on "not Tesla" don't go drive one

#

it won't help

spark orchid
#

I have driven several going back to 2017. That's when I was bitten by the EV bug. I drove a performance package model S just a few weeks ago. I know NOTHING compares, but my finances will unfortunately have a say in what I end up in

last dirge
#

the Model 3 SR+ is a good car

#

won't have the tax credit that Kia may still have available

spark orchid
#

Is there even a federal credit left?

last dirge
#

but is otherwise about the same price

hushed basalt
#

Kona is $65k here before on road costs

#

Even worse for some states who have a per km tax on EVs

#

So you're looking at well over $70k drive away, maybe $400-$500 year tax,

That doesn't include yearly registration

Tabs vs spaces

peak cloud
#

Spaces.

#

100%

#

Reason: spaces always show in any editor, regardless of settings. Tabs do not show true.

hushed basalt
#

It's really about indentation vs alignment

peak cloud
#

Not even.

hushed basalt
#

How so

peak cloud
#

If we're talking about code, spaces all day.

#

Alignment is always true with spaces. And indentation is generally more consistent with spaces.

hushed basalt
#

Alignment is when people align code to make things line up between lines

#

Indentation is generally just one indent per scope

peak cloud
#

Go have a look at some of the projects on GitHub that use a mixture. Then try to clone that repo and take a look in your own editor.

hushed basalt
#

They're not synonymous

peak cloud
#

Correct, and I understand the difference.

hushed basalt
#

You can't use a mixed code base as an example

#

It should always been the same through the entire project, at least per language

#

But let's take python for example. Let's say it was formatted to use a tab character instead of 4 spaces

#

What difference would it make

peak cloud
#

Tell that to PHP developers. 😂

hushed basalt
#

They're not real people

peak cloud
#

But see, that's where you're already messed up.

hushed basalt
peak cloud
#

Let me find an example for Python, 1 sec.

#

I can't readily find an example in HA's core code, so let me try JS 🙂

#

I'm having trouble finding either, but I know they exist in the wild!

hushed basalt
#

I mean if you're a person who uses an arbitary number of spaces to "align" code you deserve a special hell

#

Auto format all the things!

peak cloud
#

Some language specs declare standards like that.

#

"multi-line expressions must have operators that align with other operations"

hushed basalt
#

Devil languages

peak cloud
#

Another example, straight from PEP 8: https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0008/

Backslashes may still be appropriate at times. For example, long, multiple with-statements cannot use implicit continuation, so backslashes are acceptable:

with open('/path/to/some/file/you/want/to/read') as file_1, \
     open('/path/to/some/file/being/written', 'w') as file_2:
    file_2.write(file_1.read())
#

How are you going to handle that with tabs?

subtle pasture
#

Woo, my VR headset shipped early! Valve Index will be here Wednesday :3

#

Time to make my GPU cry

peak cloud
#

Now, a decade or two ago I would have argued tabs, because of limited storage and bandwidth availability.

#

I ordered a Quest 2 today 😮

subtle pasture
#

@peak cloud eeeeh, spaces compress about the same as tabs, so if even the most basic compression is used, there isn't even a space savings

peak cloud
#

I know, I know....that's a peon's headset. 😂 The Index is friggin' sweet. Wish I had a gaming rig.

subtle pasture
#

See what I did there? Space savings?

#

Eh, eh?

#

I'll see myself out <_<

peak cloud
#

Back before compression was a standard for HTTP, it mattered. 😂

subtle pasture
#

In that case, you don't use either, because HTML doesn't give a shit about whitespace

#

Minify your code and send spaghetti

peak cloud
#

I am genuinely curious as to how @hushed basalt is going to respond to these Python examples.

#

Spaghettttttttiiiiii

hushed basalt
#

It's too hard to view them on mobile

subtle pasture
#

Also, python is evil for making whitespace part of syntax. If you've learned pretty much any other language prior, Python is a pain in the ass

last cedar
#

You would wear out less spacebar keys though 😂

hushed basalt
#

I'd need to do it on a computer

subtle pasture
#

@last cedar Most text editors and IDEs allow you to automatically convert tabs into n spaces

last cedar
#

TIL

subtle pasture
#

So you can just use the tab key to insert a set number of space characters

last cedar
#

I have notebook++ (is it called that?)

subtle pasture
#

Notepad++

#

Yeah, it has that option

last cedar
#

Thanks :)

#

I have to redo my entire config at some point so may well save some time!

subtle pasture
#

Another pet peeve with Python: They didn't standardize, so some code uses tabs, while other code uses spaces, and code with tabs is 100% incompatible with code with spaces unless you do a global replace.

#

50/50 shot of example code being in the wrong format, and just not working for no apparent reason, until you check the whitespace

last cedar
#

Sounds like a nightmare tbh

#

I don't code, I do hardware. Sounds like I could easily drown in python haha

subtle pasture
#

I mean, I get what they were going for. If they enforce whitespace as part of syntax, then all code should be reasonably well indented for readability

#

Except a lot of the time the indentation you're forced to use is harder to read than manually indented code in other languages...

#

And the tabs vs. spaces thing

#

@last cedar I generally find that people who've never really written code before have an easier time with Python than people who are versed in a more traditional language

peak cloud
#

In VSCode it is a little bit of a process to convert between the two. My default is set to 2 spaces, but some overrides are set for say Python and Bash. If I load a PHP file that uses tabs, it shows as occupying 2 spaces. If I want to convert everything to 2 spaces I have to first change indent with spaces to 4, then convert tabs to spaces, then switch back to 2.

#

Wordpress is notorious for mixing tabs and spaces. 🤢

#

A lot of Node.js projects use a mixture as well. I try to use .editorconfig in my projects if I remember to, that if the editor implements support for it, it doesn’t matter what the preferred settings are.

subtle pasture
#

@peak cloud I hear the Quest 2 is pretty good, and I believe it has a tethered VR mode to use it as a PC VR headset

peak cloud
#

It does, using Oculus Link just like the original Quest.

#

I have an original Quest.

#

But alas, that still requires a gaming rig 😛

subtle pasture
#

Indeed 😛

#

I hit the used marked for my last big upgrade. Actually worked out pretty well

#

Actually managed to build an Intel HEDT platform system for once (built an X99 system with an i7 5960x)

hushed basalt
#

Shouldn't prettier just take care of nodejs formatting

peak cloud
#

How well would an i7 3770K perform for gaming? I have an extra lying around that used to be my Blue Iris machine. Currently equipped with a 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM and Windows 10 Pro. I don't have superb graphics card, but I wouldn't mind investing a little into one if I knew it would all work out.

subtle pasture
#

Oh, I gave my girlfriend my old 3770k setup when I upgraded

peak cloud
#

Any idea how it'd handle VR?

subtle pasture
#

Still does ok in the games she plays, no idea on VR though...

hushed basalt
#

I have spare optiplexs with i7 4770k but it can't take a full size graphics card

peak cloud
#

I saw a comparison for some hefty games recently, comparing the i7 3770K to a modern era i9, and the difference was negligible.

hushed basalt
#

Power supply is the biggest limit

subtle pasture
#

And I overclocked the snot out of that 3770k (also did a delid, with liquid metal under the IHS)

tropic hedge
#

I used to run VR on a 4770k with no serious issues back in 2016-2018 or so

subtle pasture
#

Runs day-to-day at 4.7 GHz on an air cooler

#

Delidding is the way to go on Ivybridge chips

peak cloud
#

The only thing my old machine lacks is a CPU fan and a good graphics card. 🤷

subtle pasture
#

It's really going to depend on your target framerate. If you're good with 60 FPS, then a 3770k will probably be ok.

peak cloud
#

@hushed basalt I think it has a 650W PSU. It's been 2+ years since I booted it, so I don't know for sure.

#

60 FPS in VR? Yeah, I'm good with that. 😂

subtle pasture
#

Most people seem to aim for 90+ FPS in VR to reduce latency

peak cloud
#

I don't care about being a part of the 90 FPS club. 😂

subtle pasture
#

And I believe the Index has a 144 Hz mode

peak cloud
#

I'd mostly be playing PokerStars VR on it, and MYST if it's supported through Oculus Link.

subtle pasture
#

Oh yeah, I heard about the new Myst re-release

#

How many times am I guying to re-buy Myst? It's worse than Skyrim. lol

peak cloud
#

I remember playing MYST as a kid, back in the mid-90s. 😂

#

I already bought it, but I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to hold out for journal/notes support.

subtle pasture
#

MYST, MYST Masterpiece Edition, realMYST, realMYST Masterpiece Edition

#

Now the VR version

#

And I believe I have both the original Red Orb release of the original Myst, and the updated Broaderbund release

hushed basalt
#

I know nothing about VR

subtle pasture
#

Cyan published the game under both >_>

hushed basalt
#

But my guess is high frame rate would be important

#

I think low frame rate may cause cognitive distress

#

Like when you type on a keyboard and the characters don't update on screen fast enough

subtle pasture
#

@hushed basalt In VR, latency is the enemy. Low framerate = higher latency.

hushed basalt
#

Or you talk to someone on the phone and you're delayed too much

subtle pasture

Turning your head and having the image turn a moment later makes a lot of people immediately sick

Got the Windows 10 edition free for already having the Java edition

peak cloud

hushed basalt

I think I'd rather get an ipad than a samsung tablet

subtle pasture
#

@last kiln I haven't found a use for the Media Browser feature either 🤷‍♀️

#

Just lets you play media from HomeAssistant's local storage (or mounted network share), but I have a NAS and a Plex server for that...

last kiln
#

Well maybe if I can play Plex entries on an MPD instance

#

But the MPD integration kinda sucks

subtle pasture
#

I mean, you can always run an MPD server side-by-side with Plex, monitoring the same folders

last kiln
#

No reason I shouldn't be able to have an open-source SONOS. I mean come on, it's [current year].

#

That's exactly what I do, Leap

subtle pasture
#

Plex also supports being a DLNA server, giving you another option for streaming media around the house

last kiln
#

Right. Have you ever used Cantata? You can stream to and MPD instance any file on your local computer. It hosts its own little server.

subtle pasture
#

Nah, I have yet to dive into open-source whole-home audio solutions

last kiln
#

MPD does all my announcements, TTS, sound effects, doorbells, notifications, etc.

#

And I'm starting to run into the limitations on the HA side

subtle pasture
#

Heh, hadn't considered using MPD to handle that

#

I have Echo's all over the house, so you can just ask Alexa to do that stuff

last kiln
#

Yeah, but that needs the cloud.

#

Which negates the appeal of using an open-source solution.

#

It's like that Simpsons scene where Mr Burns goes through all the security doors to a room with a rickety screen door.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, but it's one I had easy access to 😛

#

Alexa doesn't work offline in-general, so a solution that works offline would require additional devices deployed into every room of the house.

#

And I don't particularly want to manage a fleet of Raspberry Pi's

last kiln
#

I use virtual machines on UnRAID

subtle pasture
#

All your home audio equipment wires back to your server rack?

last kiln
#

Each virtual machine gets a USB sound card, and that USB sound card goes to a 12-channel amplifier.

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, I don't have all my speakers run back to a central location

#

So it'd be an Echo and a Pi in every room to have both fully-featured Alexa and offline notifications. Blah...

last kiln
#

If you have a weekend and $1400 I recommend it.

#

Oh, sorry this isn't the Las Vegas page

subtle pasture
#

I just use HomeAssistant push notifications as a fallback, they work offline.

#

Honestly kinda preferring that over having a voice assistant nag at me for everything

#

It's on my phone, with all my other notifications, so it's something I'm already checking

#

And it took WAY less infrastructure to get working. lol

#

I haven't heard anyone call a smartphone a PDA is many, many years. lol

last kiln
#

Well if they don't have phono jacks they have no right being called phones

subtle pasture
#

phono jacks are for phonographs and record players...

#

Which are surprisingly more popular than CDs in 2020. Go figure

last kiln
#

Are the media functions of HA fairly new?

#

I tried HA in 2015 or so and it didn't work well, so sometime between then and now I suppose.

So, what are the goals for HA on the high-level? More normie-friendly? More AI? More big-data? More audio-video? Block Programming?

clear ferry
#

Yes

last kiln
#

I brought up block programming in 2016 and I got chased out with torches and pichforks

#

But it appears they're starting to distance themselves from YAML

clear ferry
#

Node red feels like block programming 🤢

#

Yaml >*

last kiln
#

Are you lighting your torch again?

clear ferry
#

Well, I will

#

I find UI stuff terrible

#

But there are a lot of deranged people out there

last kiln
#

Well, maybe they shouldn't try to shoehorn a markup language into a scripting language

#

Is there a specific priority that they're trying to get to first?

clear ferry
#

Probably

last kiln
#

Oh, OK thanks.

subtle pasture
#

Lounge is kinda just for random non-HA chat

clear ferry
#

And whatever a current plan is, it is fluctuating and fluid

#

At best it is somewhat intentional

hushed basalt
#

Yaml is pretty gross to script in

#

I should re setup appdaemon but that has it's own caveats

deft pewter
#

To be fair, YAML isn't scripting. YAML is a declaration.

#

But I get that not everyone is comfortable writing out a declaration and understanding how it'll be interpreted once it's parsed by HA.

clear ferry
hushed basalt
#

I wouldn't call HA automations declarative

clear ferry
#

I wouldn't call you a cat, but here we are

deft pewter
#

But they are declarative. You declare triggers, conditions, actions. Your YAML isn't responsible for controlling the flow, therefore it's not a script.

hushed basalt
#

The action blocks are definitely scripted

deft pewter
#

They're a list of declared actions 🤷‍♂️

hushed basalt
#

They have order, logic (jinja),

#

And they're literally called scripts

deft pewter
#

Jinja is a templating engine. HA still has to interpret your declaration.

#

And you can call them what you want but that's just semantics. It helps people understand their purpose.

#

XLS, CSV, JSON... other ways to declare things that also aren't scripting languages.

#

The script integration allows users to specify a sequence of actions to be executed by Home Assistant.
'specify a sequence' sounds like declarations to me 🤷‍♂️

#

Integrations like python_script allow true scripting.

hushed basalt
#

Sequence of actions is basically the textbook definiton of a script

deft pewter
#

A scripting or script language is a programming language for a special run-time environment that automates the execution of tasks
YAML doesn't execute anything.

#

I understand your perspective - you write something in YAML and something happens - but that misses the layers that actually do something.

hushed basalt
#

JavaScript doesn't execute anything either?

deft pewter
#

But it does 🤣

#

JS is the engine and the stuff you write. YAML doesn't have an engine.

hushed basalt
#

I mean the files

deft pewter
#

For your YAML to do anything, it has to be parsed by something else (in this case, HA) and then run in an environment (Python).

#

PHP... JavaScript... Ruby... they just run directly in that environment.

#

There's no intermediary step like there is with raw data files like JSON and YAML.

#

What would you 'run' your YAML with if you didn't have HA?

hushed basalt
#

Jesus christ,

#

I don't care to argue with you over this

deft pewter
#

And yet you cared to disagree with me in the first place

#

It's okay to admit you're wrong.

hushed basalt
#

In the context of Home assistant automations, writing them is scripting

#

That's completely true. Are you going to say typescript isn't scripting

deft pewter
#

TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript, which is a Turing-complete programming language.

hushed basalt
#

Yes but you "can't run your typescript if you didn't have a transpiler and a javascript engine"

deft pewter
#

Transpiling is equivalent to compiling, only the target instruction set isn't as low-level. You're still writing something in a programming language.

#

What does YAML trans-/compile to?

#

Again... I get what you're trying to say. To a HA user, they don't have to know or care that YAML is just a set of declarations. But that doesn't change what it is.

hushed basalt
#

If you think that an action block is declarative I can't help you

#

I'm leaving now. Have fun

subtle pasture
#

Strictly speaking, most scripting languages are executed by an interpreter, not compiled

#

So compiling into something isn't really a requirement

deft pewter
#

This is true. Most things only care about having the correct runtime environment available, which is why I referenced environments earlier.

Hello guys, i need help but i didn't know what chanel can help me x) my problem is in the configuration.yaml 🙂

clear ferry
deft pewter
#

Maybe, possibly.

clever mortar
#

Do also read the channel topics 😉

deft pewter
#

Nah, we're not allowed to tell people to read topics 🤷‍♂️

floral pulsar
#

okay thx

clever mortar
#

You shouldn't read the topic in any channel, it doesn't have useful information 😏

deft pewter
#

I know not everyone likes Disney's take on movies... but a lot of the new stuff they announced over the last week looks great.

#

Really looking forward to more Star Wars and Marvel.

clever mortar
#

I enjoy pretty much all their stuff - it's good entertainment

#

Heck, I'll go to the cinema (in the past, and when they're open again) to watch the animated ones too - even if it's just me and the wife 😄

deft pewter
#

Yeah, there's not been one I haven't enjoyed so far. The ending of Rogue One was a little disappointing but only because they didn't keep many characters around 😄

clever mortar
#

I liked that they weren't afraid to end it that way

deft pewter
#

The story itself made sense that way. But they did a great job with some of the characters and it's a shame they won't be seen again.

#

Chirrut, for example. I'd love to have seen more of him.

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but I think it makes it a better story that way - too many movies the heroes survive just because they're the heroes

deft pewter
#

I wonder if all these new movies will get the Mulan treatment too. They just announced that Raya will also be a 'Premiere Access' movie 🤢

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I don't really want to shell out for Disney+, but at this rate I may have to 😄

deft pewter
#

We have Prime, Netflix and Disney+ and I don't regret it... but it's so greedy that they want an extra $35 to see a movie in the first few months.

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I've got Prime because of all the stuff we get from Amazon anyway, and Netflix because so many things we both enjoy watching are there (well, ok, mostly me...)

deft pewter
#

I wouldn't cancel prime over it as we also do enough shopping there to justify the price, but Prime Video is starting to annoy me. It's a paid service and they've started putting unskippable ads at the beginning of shows/movies.

#

Paid or ads, fine. Both, fuck no.

clever mortar
#

Haven't experienced that, but we don't watch a lot on Prime

deft pewter
#

I don't remember seeing it on the first season but the second season of The Boys has it. Same with a couple of movies we've watched recently.

#

I think they've all been for other videos on Prime but that's beside the point. We pay for streaming to skip the extra crap.

clever mortar
#

Aye

deft pewter
#

It's also one of the reasons I pay for services and then torrent the same shows I have legitimate access to 🤣

clever mortar
#

🤣

clear ferry
#

Good thing I'm not the only one

#

Wait why am I downloading the mandalorian when I have Disney+

deft pewter
#

I'd rather have a HD copy locally and not have to worry about my internet going down.

clear ferry
#

Your internet goes down?

#

👀

deft pewter
#

Not usually... but why should I be without entertainment if it does?

clear ferry
#

Then i have virtually free mobile broadband for the 3 minutes it is gone though

#

🤣

clear ferry

My bed level wasn't as bad as I thought

deft pewter
#

Bed level?

#

Oh... printers?

clear ferry

Yaaaaaaas

#

Lol people are so ridiculous

#

"selling my 4k 28" with one dead pixel, two years old, and half price"

#

What a scoop

#

And one guy selling the same monitor without a power supply for the same price

deft pewter
#

Half price for a missing power supply. Nice deal.

clear ferry
#

Noice

#

And a few years old

#

Saw a guy selling a 6yo monitor for 40% off

#

What a deal

deft pewter
#

Yeah... not so much

chilly nymph

@clear ferry Finally found a new house, we're in the process of buying it now. So I'll be able to ramp back into this. Only down side is it's "wired" with cat 5e. But the jacks are all daisy chained. So while there are 8 RJ45 jacks, there are only 2 drops. So that will be interesting to figure out the best resolution.

#

Also, based on the image above -- BLTouch? What kind of plate are you using? Magnetic?

clear ferry
#

Wtf

#

So you have a telephone setup

#

Or a rs485 setup

#

Glass and blt

#

Cat5e is good enough for 10G-BaseT though

#

Depending on distance

nocturne aspen

what is ESPHome and how does it work? Im looking at https://github.com/torrottum/ikea-ansluta-esphome and trying to figure it out how does it work. looks like it goes to custom_components folder in HA, but where is the actual bit which goes to D1

clear ferry
deft pewter
#

It's a firmware for ESP-based devices.

#

Lets you easily set up sensors/switches and hook them into other systems like HA.

#

And... they have their own server if you want to ask about it.

spice swan
#

@chilly nymph you need to re-punch everything. Hopefully you can salvage some of the runs. My advice is focus on really good WiFi unless you have construction opportunities for hard Runs. You can use some wireless protocol for almost everything.

chilly nymph
#

@spice swan @clear ferry Yeah, bsaically. That's the plan. I'm trying to determine if I want to keep the two existing drops to the basement and just do a couple node networking closets, basically

#

Or if I want to run all the drops to the basement. Problem is, including the basement, it's basically a 4 story house. So that's going to be tough considering the drops are not in a conduit.

clear ferry
#

I did one drop from my garage to my attic, and do the rest inside the walls or going on the outside of the house

chilly nymph
#

and yes @clear ferry it is wired like phone cables. But there are also RJ11 jacks for telephone. So the electrician that did the work was intending it to be for networking and just didn't know what they were doing. I tried to get the builder to fix it, but the builder is convinced it's not wrong. So I'll just have to deal with it

chilly nymph
#

Hah.

clear ferry
#

I have 5 outside wall cables and three inside the crawl spaces in my attic, everything else is wireless or in my DC

chilly nymph
#

@spice swan I prefer wired, if possible. But yes, I'm going to focus on wifi at the beginning. That said, it may not be too hard to do a "networking closet" on the second story, because all three rooms on that floor share one corner and I have a feeling that's where the runs go.

#

@clear ferry Sorry for having two conversations with you at once lol. Why is your glass bed warped like that?

#

I have an Ender 3 v2 with bltouch and mine bows a little bit in the middle but not like that

clear ferry
#

Probably because I have not fixed my manual leveling perfect yet, and I have tape on my bed

chilly nymph
#

That could do it I guess. Where are your clips?

spice swan
#

@chilly nymph I have a really big home network in a really small house. I work for a Networking security company and I have Labs I use for work. All the work stuff and media are all on Hard Runs. I have switches in my Office networking closet and switches in a rack in the garage where the Physical lab lives. all the rest of the hard runs are to the media-center switch, my desk switch, AP's and Cameras. I use Unifi for almost all of it.

clear ferry
#

No clips

#

Just tape

chilly nymph
#

Oh.

clear ferry
#

@spice swan this is what we have the garage DC for 🥳

chilly nymph
#

I thought you meant you covered the bed with painters tape, which a lot of people do

clear ferry
#

Only the corners

#

To keep it in place

chilly nymph
#

Yeah, I hear you. I am much more of a fan of what you are doing than what I thought you were doing

clear ferry
#

As seen here

nocturne aspen

Unifi 🤢

@clear ferry Nice.
